Description

[0001] A CHARGING SYSTEM FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD

[0003] The invention relates to the automatic charging system for electric vehicles and the method for the operation of this system.

[0004] PRIOR ART

[0005] Electric vehicles (EVs) need regular charging at charging stations for users, but this process can be time-consuming for users. While EV sales are expected to increase in the future, relying solely on individuals going to charging stations may not be viable.

[0006] In particular, the lack of a sufficient number of charging stations in suitable locations can cause users to travel long distances to charge their vehicles. This can make the charging process complicated and time-consuming. In addition, when the charging process is complete, the user needs to come back to the vehicle, remove the vehicle from the charger and leave the station ready to use for another person. In this context, these problems are attempted to be solved by taking steps such as expanding charging infrastructure, developing fast charging technologies, and further harmonizing charging standards.

[0007] To solve the aforementioned problem, electric vehicle owners have the option of installing charging stations in their flats or apartments. This means the installation of a charging station for each parking space and entails additional costs. This approach aims to provide EV owners with the ability to charge their vehicles in their own homes, eliminating the need to go to external charging stations. Having charging stations in residential complexes allows EV owners to have a more convenient and accessible charging solution. However, it is important to consider factors such as the cost of installation, the availability of charging infrastructure, and the impact on overall power mains capacity when many EVs are being charged simultaneously.

[0008] Disadvantages of charging stations are; • It requires traveling to and from the charging station, which requires extra time and effort to charge.

[0009] • In order to build charging stations, it is necessary to procure heavy-weighted and expensive components.

[0010] • Malfunctions can occur at charging stations since they operate at high power. Also, people are often at risk because they are near or in their vehicles during the charging process.

[0011] However, in household charging stations;

[0012] • It is operated manually.

[0013] • Every electric vehicle owner has to purchase themselves a charging station. There is a need for a charging station for each electric vehicle and the cost per vehicle is high.

[0014] • Since high power transfer is done at home, it can be dangerous for users and homeowners. Intervention is a real possibility.

[0015] When application solutions in the state of the art are investigated, there are automatic charging solutions offered to users with trade names such as ZiGGY & Parky & BaTTeRi. ZiGGY and Parky relate to an automatic charging robot with a built-in battery. Within the scope of the relevant solution, there is a need for configurations such as many sensors in parking areas. In addition, connection with the vehicle is done physically.

[0016] On the other hand, BaTTeri offers an automatically moving charging robot system. It has its own battery and automatically approaches the region where the vehicle is located. The users have to connect the charging cable to the vehicle themselves. While said application allows the charging station to be portable, it remains dependent on the user and the charging capacity depends on the battery capacity within its own structure.

[0017] Patent applications identified in the relevant technical field are listed as follows.

[0018] Table 1

[0019] When the studies identified in the state of the art are examined, it is not possible to introduce the entire invention, the technical details of which are mentioned below. There are multiple technical disadvantages in each of these inventions, and the present invention introduces an alternative and innovative solution.

[0020] As a result all the above-mentioned problems have made it imperative to make an innovation in the relevant field.

[0021] OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

[0022] The present invention is introduced with the object of eliminating the above-mentioned problems and making a technical innovation in the relevant field.

[0023] The main object of the invention is to introduce an innovative solution structure that enables fast, practical and systematic charging of electric vehicles in a fully automated manner and without the need for physical intervention from the user.

[0024] Another object of the invention is to make it possible to charge vehicles in an almost completely automatic way compared to charging stations or home charging products, without spending extra time and effort on charging. Another object of the invention is to introduce a parking structure for the purpose of charging a large number of electric vehicles.

[0025] Another object of the invention is to reduce the cost of charging stations per vehicle in a parking area designed to charge a large number of vehicles.

[0026] Another object of the invention is to reduce the possibility of injury to people in any accident or malfunction, since the charging process does not take place in places where people are around.

[0027] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0028] To achieve all the objects mentioned above and that will emerge from the following detailed description, the present invention is a charging system for electric vehicles.

[0029] Charging process is carried out wirelessly by paired magnetic resonance method, which is a type of inductive charging used to transfer the power of electromagnetic waves. The charging robot is connected to the mains by a cable that can move along the route along which it plans to travel in the parking area. The robot is also equipped with the components needed to wirelessly transfer power to the module that is connected to the car.

[0030] The charging robot is equipped with such circuit in order to increase the frequency of AC from the mains to reduce energy loss during wireless power transfer. At the same time, it is equipped with a transmitter coil and receiver coil in order to maximize the power factor to minimize the reactive power. Finally, there is a camera to recognize license plate numbers and a wireless communication module inside to communicate with the module. The module has a structure that can convert the vehicle's CAN data into WiFi signals and receive this information so that the Charging Robot can connect the vehicle's CAN and battery beforehand. The receiver coil is equipped together with a compensation topology and a rectifier circuit that converts AC to DC for charging the vehicle's battery. In addition, there is a DC-DC converter to change the voltage value according to the battery of the vehicle. Since the module is connected to the CAN line, it can receive information regarding the voltage of the EV battery. Within the scope of the invention, paired magnetic resonance method is used in the charging system. The 50Hz 380VAC power supply is taken from the mains using a slidable busbar system. The charging robot can receive power and move around the parking area by having a slidable busbar system with a cable attached to it. The charging robot has an internal AC-AC converter to amplify the frequency of alternating current from the mains. The generated AC consists of AC-DC and DC-AC converter with a frequency higher than 50Hz. This process is used to minimize energy loss during wireless power transfer between coils.

[0031] PFC is an abbreviation for power factor correction and includes a circuit of capacitors to minimize the reactive power caused by the inductive effect of the coils. The transmitter coil is located at the top of the charging robot and transmits the energy to the receiver coil in the module mounted on the EVs. After PFC, the rectifier converts AC to DC for charging. Finally, the module adjusts the DC-DC converter to match the voltage of the EV's battery.

[0084] • Storing the data received by the charging module (30) from the electric vehicle (EV) via CAN bus in the database, in accordance with the wireless communication of the robot (10) and the charging module (30), accordingly, safe charging of electric vehicles (EVs) registered in the parking area (P) database according to prioritization queue.

[0085] Fig. 1, fig. 2, and fig. 3 show representative drawings describing the operation of an embodiment of the system (S) of the invention. Accordingly, the system (S) is configured on a parking area (P). It is obvious that similar studies can be carried out in alternative applications.

[0086] In the parking area (P), electric vehicles (EVs) are positioned in the prescribed positions in the parking area. In said parking area (P), there is a busbar (20) structure extending in at least one direction, and a rail (21) capable of moving linearly is positioned on said busbar (20). While said rail (21) ensures the transfer of at least one energy phase on the busbar, it can also move linearly on the busbar (20). In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the busbar (20) can be located in a region high above the ground, or located in a variation where electrical insulation is made under the ground. The invention involves a robot (10) that is physically connected to said rail (21) with at least one energy transfer cable (210). Said robot (10) has at least one transmitter coil (11) structure thereon. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the robot (10) is capable of moving by following the guides (L) on the ground. In the alternative embodiment, it can move in the parking area (P) by mapping with a camera (12) or lidar sensor. With the movement of the said robot (10), force is applied to the energy transfer cable (210) and the rail (21) can move on the busbar (20). Within this scope, the sheath of said energy transfer cable (210) is capable of withstanding the tensile force.

[0087] The robot (10) has at least one camera (12) thereon, and through said camera (12), the license plates (VP) of the electric vehicles (EVs) in the parking area (P) can be scanned. In addition, said robot (10) comprises at least one communication unit (50) and can be communicated with the charging module (30) through said communication unit (50). In the preferred embodiment, said communication unit (50) has a WiFi feature.

[0088] Within the scope of the system (S) of the invention, at least one electric vehicle (EV) must be equipped with a charging module (30) in order for the system (S) to operate. Within this scope, the charging module (30) comprises at least one receiver coil (31) and said receiver coil (31) is associated with the battery (40) and BMS (41) of the electric vehicle (EV). In addition, said charging module (30) comprises at least one communication unit (50) and can be communicated with the robot (10) through said communication unit (50). In the preferred embodiment, said communication unit (50) has a WiFi feature.

[0089] Fig. 4 shows a block describing the operation of the system. In the preferred embodiment, the busbar (20) is equipped with 380VAC, 50Hz power. In alternative embodiment, said power values may vary. The energy flow between said busbar (20) and the robot (10) is provided by means of at least one energy transfer cable (210) and rail (21). In the preferred embodiment, the robot (10) is equipped with at least one AC- AC converter and power factor correction unit (PFC). The robot (10) can transfer energy magnetically with its transmitter coil (11) and send WiFi data through its communication unit (50). The charging module (30) can receive energy wirelessly with its receiver coil (31). The power factor of the energy received is corrected by the power factor correction unit (PFC), the electricity is converted to direct current by means of at least one rectifier unit, and it is adjusted to the appropriate voltage level for the electric vehicle (EV) with the DC-DC converter. The charging module (30) can communicate with the electric vehicle (EC) via canbus. Within this scope, charging can be performed via BMS (41).

[0090] Said configuration can be changed optionally according to technological equipment and manufacturer preferences.

[0091] During the operation of the invention, the robot (10) scans the license plate (VP) of the electric vehicle (EV) by means of its camera (12) and moves to the lower part of the receiver coil (31) on the electric vehicle (EV). The charging process takes place in accordance with the transfer of the energy received from the busbar (20) to the transmitter coil (11) on the robot (10). The robot (10) and the charging module (30) communicate via the wireless communication unit (50).

[0092] Fig. 5 shows a flow diagram describing the process steps in the autonomous execution of charging processes in the parking area (P).

[0093] Accordingly, the customer / user enters the daily entry and exit times in advance via the mobile app. First, when the electric vehicle (EV) enters the parking area (P), the license plate (VP) number is read by a camera (12) using image processing algorithms. Said camera (12) can be a camera (12) located at the entrance of the parking area, or it can be the camera (12) on the robot (10).

[0094] Then, the charging status and battery capacity values are read by wireless communication between a charging module (30) connected to the electric vehicle (EV) and a communication unit (50) which is a wireless module integrated at the entrance. Said charging module (30) receives the necessary information from the CAN and transmits it to the communication unit (50), which is the wireless communication module at the entrance. The customer parks the electric vehicle (EV) in the appropriate position and then enters an exit time via the mobile app.

[0095] A priority score is calculated for electric vehicles (EVs) in the parking area (P). Said priority score is calculated as follows: • The time value between the exit time and the current time is retrieved.

[0096] • Using the charging status and battery capacity of the EV, the required amount of energy is calculated.

[0097] • Time is added to the equation in inverse proportion.

[0098] • The amount of energy required is added to the equation in direct proportion.

[0099] • The electric vehicle (EV) is then added to the queue according to its priority score.

[0100] The higher the priority score, the higher the electric vehicle (EV) is ranked in the order of the queue.

[0101] Prioritization for charging is based on the following formula.

[0102] Total Time Minutes) = Departure Time — Current Time(Charging Start Time)

[0103] Priority Score = 100 xTotal TimeX Battery Capacity x (1 — Charging Status)

[0104] Table 2

[0105] In a scenario like the one in Table 2, when a new vehicle with a priority score of 55 is detected, it is placed in the 3rd place.

[0106] When the electric vehicle (EV) leaves the parking area (P), a camera (12) reads the license plate (VP) number, while the communication unit (50), which is a wireless communication module, reads the battery (40) capacity and charging status values, thus these values are used to calculate how much charging has been done for each license plate (VP) number for billing. In another preferred embodiment of the invention, a machine learning application is applied to predict, after sufficient samples, which license plate (VP) usually stays in the parking areas (P) for how long and at what time.

[0107] In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the estimated time values are presented to the customer in the mobile application as a suggestion. In addition, the customer can choose to manually enter the exit time information.

[0108] Fig. 6 shows the flow diagram describing the control of the charging robot (10).

[0109] Within the scope of the system (S) of the invention, all inputs (license plate (VP) number, battery (40) capacity, charging status and exit time values are stored and processed in a database. Similarly, the calculated queue information for each electric vehicle (EV) is also kept in the database.

[0110] At least one robot (10) connected to the busbar (20) roaming around the parking area (P) is controlled via data in the database using wireless communication. When an electric vehicle (EV) is charged by the robot, the database is updated and the information that the robot (10) has completed the charging of an electric vehicle (EV) is transmitted to the database. At least one monitor on the system (S) checks whether there are any electric vehicles (EVs) in the queue defined on the database:

[0111] • If there is no electric vehicle (EV) in the queue, the robot (10) is sent to an empty position in the predefined parking area (P).

[0112] • If there is an electric vehicle (EV) in the queue, the license plate (VP) number of the first electric vehicle (EV) in the queue is transmitted to the robot (10) by the monitor on the system (S). Communication takes place via WiFi in the parking area (P).

[0113] While the robot (10) is roaming in the parking area (P) using the guides (L), preferably lines on the ground, it finds the license plate (VP) number of the vehicle in the queue with the camera (12) equipped with image processing capabilities. In another preferred embodiment of the invention, image processing can take place through an assessor on the system (S). Within this scope, the data received by the camera (12) is transmitted to the assessor in the system (S) via WiFi with the communication unit (50). Within this scope, the related system (S) is a computer-controlled system (S).

[0114] The robot (10) communicates with the charging module (30) of the electric vehicle (EV) it detects using wireless communication and adjusts itself in a position where the transmitter coil (11) and receiver coils (31) are precisely aligned, thus ensuring maximum energy transfer. In a preferred embodiment, the robot (10) can also move the transmitter coil (11) upwards and use sound sensors placed thereon to minimize the distance between the coils.

[0115] The charging module (30) reads the voltage value of the battery (40) via CAN and adjusts the internal DC-DC converter accordingly.

[0116] The charging process is initiated by the robot (10). Thermal control is applied by the robot (10).

[0117] When the battery (40) is fully charged, the charging module (30) receives it via CAN and transmits it to the robot (10) via the communication unit (50) using wireless communication, which acts as a trigger for the robot (10) to stop the charging process.

[0118] The robot (10) updates the database, and so the process continues for the next electric vehicle (EV).

[0119] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, in order to charge the electric vehicles (EVs) in the parking area (P) systematically under the control of the controller and robot (10), the charging process is initiated by the following processes;

[0120] • Checking whether there is an electric vehicle (EV) registration during charging; if there is,

[0121] • Transferring the license plate (VP) information of the electric vehicle (EV) in the first place in the database to the robot (10);

[0122] • The robot (10), with the image processing algorithm, scans the license plates (VP) and moves in the parking area (P) to detect the corresponding electric vehicle (EV); • The robot (10) communicates with the charging module (30) of the relevant electric vehicle (EV) and, accordingly, the charging module (30) is aligned with the receiver coil (31) in the suitable position;

[0123] • Communication of the charging module (30) with the electric vehicle (EV) via CAN bus and adjustment of the DC-DC converter by reading the voltage data of the battery (40).

[0124] During said process, thermal control is carried out simultaneously. Accordingly; in a preferred embodiment of the invention, in accordance with the data obtained from the charging module (30) to perform the temperature control of the battery (40) during the charging process; of the three threshold values that increase relative to each other; in order to continuously monitor the operation of the cooling system above the second and third threshold values; thermal management is performed by the following processes;

[0125] • Checking the temperature according to the second threshold parameter and checking whether the cooling system of the electric vehicle (EV) is active and stopping the cooling process if the cooling is active and the temperature is below the first threshold value;
