Description

[0001] Method for identifying aging indicators for an aging state assessment of a battery

[0002] The present invention relates to a universal method for identifying aging indicators for application-optimized aging assessment in a system-specific battery application. Specifically, it is a method that is carried out prior to product development of a system with a battery in order to design the most efficient and accurate method of dedicated diagnosis of the battery's aging state within the context of the specific application and system, before implementing a corresponding diagnostic technology in the system.

[0003] In the prior art, it is known to provide a diagnostic technology in systems with larger battery storage systems, such as traction batteries, home storage systems or the like. This diagnostic technology takes measurements over the product life of the battery storage system and generates information for a user or maintenance personnel that provides information about the aging state of the entire battery storage system or individual modules and cells within it. The known methods are usually assessment methods that record the aging state, the so-called State of Health (SOH) by monitoring various parameters and generally calculate the aging state assessment or the State of Health (SOH) as part of a so-called SOH diagnosis using a model-based simulation. Such parameters that experience changes in connection with the aging of battery cells are also referred to as aging indicators or, more frequently, Health Indicators (HI).

[0004] Most current approaches to implementing diagnostic technology for SOH assessment were originally developed on a system for a specific application. Often, adaptations to the existing diagnostic technology are subsequently made when the system is exposed to different environments and requirements, modifications are made to the existing diagnostic technology, or when the system and battery are further developed, which can be the case, for example, as part of a model update or a new product generation. This can result in constellations between a system or a battery application and a diagnostic technology in which the original approach of an implemented SOH assessment procedure, in relation to current specifications or types of the battery, the system, or a change in external circumstances in a system environment, no longer retrospectively permits the optimal procedure with regard to the efficiency of available system resources and the accuracy of the diagnostic result. In particular, models of a model-based simulation or the scope of a database and a computing operation are not adapted to current, improved system resources, such as increased microchip processing capacity, resulting in the available system performance for data processing not being efficiently utilized, and the potentially possible accuracy of the SOH assessment not being realized.

[0005] On the other hand, according to current standards, it is very complex and hardly economical to provide a fundamentally new structure of the diagnostic technology for each system configuration or to fundamentally re-check its conformity in order to achieve or ensure an optimization of the efficiency and accuracy of the SOH assessment in each system-specific battery application.

[0006] In summary, to ensure an application-optimized configuration of a diagnostic technology and an assessment procedure implemented on it, a fundamental review and, if necessary, a realignment of essential aspects, such as the recorded parameters, the models used and the computational effort, would have to be carried out for each system-specific battery application.

[0007] In reality, this effort is counteracted by further hurdles, such as limited available resources, in particular budget and time constraints for development work in a product development project, and the aforementioned requirement for always individually optimizing a diagnostic technique for SOH assessment.

[0008] Accordingly, there is commercial interest and need for system-independent solutions for designing a system-specific and application-optimized diagnostic technique for SOH assessment, which achieves an optimal compromise between the available resources of the system, as well as resources in advance of a development project on the one hand, and an efficiency of the SOH assessment, as well as the highest possible accuracy on the other.

[0009] It is an object of the invention to provide a method that enables a universal, reproducible design or verification of a diagnostic technique for an individual battery application with regard to the best possible efficiency of a SOH diagnosis depending at least on the available or used system-specific resources.

[0010] The above objects are achieved by a universal method for identifying aging indicators for application-optimized aging state assessment in a system-specific battery application, comprising the steps of claim 1. The steps do not necessarily have to be performed in the listed order, but can also be performed in an at least partially different order or at least partially parallel to one another. Further features and details of the invention emerge from the subclaims, the description, and the drawings.

[0011] The method according to the invention comprises the following steps.

[0012] A step of collecting individual information from a user on predetermined universal criteria, which at least relate to a measurement of resources and requirements with respect to the system with the battery. A step of determining an individual weighting of universal performance indicators based on a result of the individual information on the criteria, wherein the performance indicators relate at least to a measurement of a performance capability or performance characteristic of indicators or methods with respect to an SOH diagnosis. A step of selecting aging indicators from a universal selection of aging indicators from a database based on a result of the individual performance indicator weighting, wherein the aging indicators relate at least to a measurement of a parameter change depending on the aging of a battery. Finally, a step of outputting at least one aging indicator to the user based on the result of the aging indicator selection.

[0013] Thus, the invention proposes for the first time a systematic solution approach and a technical implementation for a universal method which, taking into account numerous individual aspects, ultimately provides the essential features for a system-specific and application-optimized diagnostic technique for SOH diagnosis.

[0014] As a significant advantage of the invention, a configuration of the diagnostic technique proposed by the method achieves, after weighing the numerous individual aspects, the best possible compromise between the available resources and requirements in terms of accuracy of the SOH diagnosis.

[0015] As a particular advantage of the invention, it is now possible, with little effort, to independently determine in different product development projects which configuration of a diagnostic technology realizes the most efficient SOH assessment and can be implemented within the framework of the available resources, such as system capacities.

[0016] In a similar application, a significant advantage of the invention is that from now on and with little effort, independently of various modifications during a model update of a product, it can be checked whether an existing configuration of a diagnostic technology still offers the most efficient SOH assessment, measured against currently available resources for implementation.

[0017] Thus, the invention also offers a significant economic advantage not only in connection with a development effort for designing a configuration of the measurement technology, but also for the design of a dedicated algorithm for SOH estimation in the system-specific battery application.

[0018] Furthermore, the invention offers the advantageous possibility of integrating performance-relevant and planning-relevant aspects of a development project, the fulfillment of which can be taken into account in the method. In explanation of the invention defined above, it is provided that the universal criteria, for which individual information is required from the user, as well as the aging indicators, i.e., health indicators (HI), and the universal performance indicators, i.e., so-called key performance indicators (KPIs), are predetermined in their number and content definition by a user or a provider of the method, i.e., are stored in the database, and are preferably subject to continuous updating in response to findings from research and development.

[0019] The universal criteria on resources and requirements related to the battery system include, for example, quantitative and qualitative aspects such as:

[0020] - Battery specifications

[0021] - Specifications for a CPU

[0022] - Specifications for sensors and measurement technology

[0023] - Limitations of computing capacity on a chip

[0024] - Limitations of memory capacity on a chip

[0025] - Limitations of material use or components such as sensors and measurement technology

[0026] - Expected diagnostic accuracy

[0027] - Focus of an internal / external implementation

[0028] - Focus of a target application, etc.

[0029] In addition, the universal criteria may also include criteria relating to resources and requirements related to services within a development project, for example quantitative and qualitative aspects such as:

[0030] - Limitations on development work hours

[0031] - Limitations of development time

[0032] - Limitations of technical development equipment

[0033] - Limitations on manufacturing working hours

[0034] - Limitations of production time

[0035] - Limitations of technical manufacturing equipment

[0036] - Focus of development effort

[0037] - Focus of manufacturing capacities - Diagnostic accuracy to be achieved

[0038] - Budget, etc.

[0039] The universal performance indicators that measure a performance capability or performance characteristic include, for example:

[0040] - Impact on SOH diagnostic quality

[0041] - technical suitability for internal / external implementation

[0042] - Relevance level for battery safety and / or battery life

[0043] - Implementation effort level

[0044] - Degree of dependence of efficiency on the chemical and / or geometric cell type

[0045] - Degree of sustainability

[0046] - Degree of adaptability

[0047] - Identification type online / offline use

[0048] - Degree of suitability according to the current state of science

[0049] The aging indicators that establish a connection between a parameter change and the aging of a battery include, for example:

[0050] - Heating due to internal resistance value

[0051] - Decrease in capacity

[0052] - Increase in internal resistance

[0053] - Increase in overpotential at an electrode

[0054] - Mechanically caused loss of contact

[0055] - Decrease in ion conductivity

[0056] - Formation of microcracks

[0057] - Decrease of open circuit voltage (OCV), etc.

[0058] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, the method further comprises a step of selecting SOH diagnostic methods from a universal selection of SOH diagnostic methods from a database and a step of outputting at least one SOH diagnostic method to the user based on a result of the SOH diagnostic method selection. The selection of SOH diagnostic methods includes a step of selecting SOH diagnostic methods based on a result of the aging indicator selection. The SOH diagnostic methods relate to at least one approach for assessing an aging state of a battery based on the identified aging indicators.

[0059] By way of example, the SOH diagnostic procedures, whose approach is based on the measurement and calculation of certain aging indicators, may include, among others:

[0060] - Method with dual extended Kalman filters

[0061] - Process with particle filtration

[0062] - Dual sliding mode monitoring procedures, etc.

[0063] Thus, the method simultaneously implements a selection of an SOH diagnostic method, which additionally provides an identification of an SOH diagnostic method for an application-optimized aging state assessment, i.e. SOH diagnosis in a system-specific battery application, which matches the identified aging indicators or whose approach is based on them.

[0064] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention based on this, the step of selecting SOH diagnostic methods also includes a step of selecting based on the result of the individual performance indicator weighting, wherein the result of the SOH diagnostic method selection comprises an intersection of the results of the two included selections. Thus, the selection of the SOH diagnostic method, similar to the selection of the aging indicators, can also be additionally supported by taking into account user input on criteria using specially assigned performance indicators.

[0065] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, the step of determining the individual performance indicator weighting further comprises a step of assigning a factor to be calculated between a performance indicator and a criterion, and a step of calculating the factor after measuring the individual information for the same criterion. Thus, a systematic and flexible approach to individual performance indicator weighting is provided. According to an aspect of the invention building on this, the result of the individual performance indicator weighting can result in a selection of an individual selection of performance indicators from a universal selection of performance indicators. This can be achieved in a simple manner by using a factor of zero for irrelevant performance indicators, after which further processing effort for irrelevant aspects can be omitted.

[0066] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, at least one aging indicator decision matrix can be stored in the database, which comprises at least one assignment of a predetermined rating between an aging indicator and a performance indicator. This provides generally valid causal relationships between technical aspects, which reduce the processing effort required for the selection. Furthermore, transparent and manually configurable influence on the selection process is possible.

[0067] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention based on this, the step of selecting aging indicators can further comprise a step of applying a factor between a performance indicator and a criterion to a predetermined evaluation between an aging indicator and the same performance indicator. The factor is provided from the performance indicator weighting and the evaluation is provided from the aging indicator decision matrix. Thus, a systematic and flexible approach to selecting aging indicators is implemented.

[0068] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, at least one method decision matrix can be stored in the database, which comprises at least one predetermined association between a SOH diagnostic method and the aging indicators required for its implementation. This provides generally valid causal relationships between technical aspects, which reduce the processing effort required for selection.

[0069] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention based thereon, the step of selecting SOH diagnostic methods can further comprise a step of filtering SOH diagnostic methods and the aging indicators required for their implementation according to the at least one selected aging indicator from the result of the aging indicator selection. Thus, a simple approach for selecting SOH diagnostic methods is implemented.

[0070] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, the at least one method decision matrix can further comprise a predetermined assignment of a predetermined rating between a SOH diagnostic method and a performance indicator. This provides generally valid, causal relationships between technical aspects, which reduce the processing effort required for the selection. Furthermore, transparent and manually configurable influence on the selection process is possible.

[0071] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention based thereon, the step of selecting SOH diagnostic methods can comprise a step of applying a factor between a performance indicator and a criterion to a predetermined evaluation between an SOH diagnostic method and the same performance indicator. The factor is provided from the performance indicator weighting and the evaluation from the method decision matrix. Thus, a systematic and flexible approach for the selection of aging indicators is implemented.

[0072] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, the at least one method decision matrix can further comprise qualitative comments for the user, which are output when outputting SOH diagnostic methods along with the result of the SOH diagnostic method selection. Such comments can contain indications of technical compatibility or incompatibility as well as technical features that are relevant for a user's decision-making based on the output result of the method.

[0073] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, providing the predetermined ratings or associations may comprise at least two prior steps: a step of capturing and storing ratings from the user between an aging indicator and a performance indicator in the database; and / or a step of capturing and storing ratings from the user between an aging indicator and a SOH diagnostic method in the database, and a step of capturing and storing associations from the user between an SOH diagnostic method and the aging indicators required for its implementation in the database.Accordingly, an initial and preferably continuous update of the provided information content on the aforementioned generally valid causal relationships between technical aspects can be implemented, which reduces processing effort and supports reproducibility of the result.

[0074] Similarly, according to an advantageous aspect of the invention, providing the predetermined universal criteria may comprise a prior step of capturing and storing definitions of the criteria from the user in the database.

[0075] According to an advantageous aspect of the invention, the predetermined universal criteria can also include criteria relating to the assessment of resources and requirements with regard to the development or production of the system with the battery. Thus, the potential of aspects to be considered in the method is expanded to include a further, planning-related dimension of a development project from which the design of the diagnostic technology for the system-specific battery application arises. This results in further coordination and economic advantages.

[0076] Further advantages, features, and details of the invention will become apparent from the following description, which describes an embodiment in detail with reference to the drawings. They show schematically:

[0082] Fig. 1 shows a block diagram of essential elements related to the universal method for identifying aging indicators for an application-optimized aging state assessment in a system-specific battery application.

[0083] The procedure is used to determine the most efficient SOH diagnostic procedure based on a determined selection of aging indicators and taking into account the technical specifications and limitations of a system and the battery, which is to be continuously assessed for its aging status using the SOH diagnostic procedure. For the technical implementation of the procedure, an interface for manual input of information by a user is provided. The interface is provided in the form of a computer user interface with categorized questions and fields for information input.

[0084] Likewise, an interface in the form of a computer user interface is provided for outputting a result that displays an individually identified selection of aging indicators and one or more SOH diagnostic procedures identified as suitable. Based on the result provided by the universal procedure, the user's decision-making basis is supported when designing a diagnostic technology or obtaining findings when testing a diagnostic technology on an existing system.

[0085] The process comprises, as an initial individualized information block, information on criteria regarding available resources, such as specifications of system components, the battery, or optionally also project requirements, i.e., the accuracy of the SOH diagnosis, as previously explained. Based on this individualized information block, further, universal information blocks are processed. These contain technical definitions and relationships derived from research and development findings, supplemented by intellectually predetermined assessments of the intersections of the technical relationships.

[0086] To implement the method, an intelligent algorithm performs data processing from the individualized information block and the universal information blocks using steps described below, based on queries from one or more information-specific databases. As a result of the data processing, a dataset containing target information is identified based on the definitions, findings, and assessments from the universal information blocks with the highest match to the information in the individualized information block.

[0087] Fig. 2 schematically shows a flow chart of steps in a first embodiment of the invention. First, a user provides information on criteria for a subsequent selection of information, ie

[0088] Selection criteria, which in this case include both resources and requirements for the system with battery for implementing the SOH diagnosis and optionally for the development project, are entered via the computer-assisted input interface.

[0089] In the first steps of the procedure, the information on criteria for resources is read in step S21 and the information on criteria for requirements is read in step S22.

[0090] The imported data is then evaluated and assigned to predetermined key performance indicators (KPIs). In step S30 for weighting key performance indicators (KPIs), weighting factors are calculated for the universal key performance indicators (KPIs) in relation to the individual data. This defines priorities based on the thematic relevance of the key performance indicators (KPIs) to the individual issue in a data set.

[0091] An example matrix for such a data set is shown in Fig. 4. A weighting factor is assigned to each KPI and each criterion, reflecting the relevance of the KPI in a technical context with the criterion, taking into account the information on the individual case.

[0092] Subsequently, in step S40, the method performs a selection of aging indicators Hl from a stored, universal selection thereof, which is carried out on a retrieved aging indicator decision matrix from the database.

[0093] Fig. 5 shows an example of an aging indicator decision matrix. This matrix contains, for each aging indicator HI and each performance indicator KPI, a quantitative assessment, a compatibility, property, or performance of the aging indicator HI in a technical context with the performance indicator KPI. The matrix is created in advance in step S10 based on intellectual assessments from the insights of a user or provider of the method and stored in the database.

[0094] In step S40 of selecting the aging indicators H1, the factors from step S30 of weighting the performance indicators (KPIs) and the evaluations from the aging indicator decision matrix are calculated, i.e., multiplied, while assigning the same performance indicators (KP Is). As a result of the selection from step S40, a ranking of aging indicators H1 is created based on the highest calculated value.

[0095] In one of the subsequent steps, in step S60, a set of identified aging indicators H1 is output according to the result of the selection from step S40, i.e., displayed to the user on the computer-assisted interface. This can be a single aging indicator H1 or a ranking of aging indicators H1, which represent the approach for the most effective SOH diagnosis with regard to the prerequisites.

[0096] Furthermore, in a step S51, a selection of SOH diagnostic methods is carried out from a stored, universal selection thereof, which is carried out on a retrieved method decision matrix from the database.

[0097] Fig. 6 shows an example of a process decision matrix. This matrix contains, in a column for each SOH diagnostic procedure, one or a group of required aging indicators Hls, on which a measurement and calculation approach for the SOH diagnostic procedure is based. This assignment is created in advance in step S11 from the findings of a user or provider of the procedure and stored in the database.

[0098] In step S51 of the selection, those methods are filtered out from the universal selection of SOH diagnostic methods whose approach is compatible with the identified group of aging indicators Hls from the selection in step S40. One or more SOH diagnostic methods thus identified from step S51 are then output to the user via the interface in step S70 in addition to the identified aging indicators Hls from step S40.

[0099] Fig. 3 shows a flowchart of a second embodiment of the method. The method of the second embodiment differs from the method of the first embodiment shown in Fig. 2 primarily by an additional selection step S52 within the higher-level step S50 for selecting SOH diagnostic methods. In this case, the universal selection of performance indicators (KPIs) also includes those that have a technically relevant connection to the SOH diagnostic methods.

[0100] Similar to step S40 for selecting aging indicators H1, step S52 also involves selecting SOH diagnostic methods from a stored, universal selection thereof, which is executed on the retrieved method decision matrix from the database.

[0101] As shown again with reference to Fig. 6 in the exemplary process decision matrix, this contains additional columns containing performance indicators (KPIs) relating to the SOH diagnostic procedures. For each SOH diagnostic procedure and each performance indicator (KPI), a quantitative evaluation, a compatibility, property, or performance capability of the SOH diagnostic procedure is presented in a technical context with the performance indicator (KPI). These matrix contents are also created in advance in step S12 based on intellectual evaluations from the findings of a user or provider of the procedure and stored in the database. Similar to step S40, in step S52 of the selection of the SOH diagnostic procedures, the factors from step S30 of the weighting of the performance indicators (KPIs) and the evaluations from the process decision matrix are offset against each other, assigning the same performance indicators (KPIs), i.e.For example, multiplied. As a result of the selection from step S52, a ranking of SOH diagnostic methods is created based on the highest calculated value.

[0102] Subsequently, from an intersection of the results from the selection step S51 and the selection step S52 for SOH diagnostic methods, one or more SOH diagnostic methods are identified, which are output to the user via the interface in step S70.

[0103] The selection step S51 and the selection step S52 for SOH diagnostic methods can be performed in any order, whereby a more effective data processing logic is enabled if a filter-based selection process from step S51 precedes a factor-based selection process from step S52.

[0104] In addition, in step S70, additional information on technical compatibility or incompatibility as well as technical features of the identified SOH diagnostic procedures stored in the database can be output and can provide relevant support for decision-making.
