AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current systems for monitoring and treating aquatic animals, particularly at harvest, face challenges such as difficulties in counting and weighing fish, and managing the harvest process effectively, leading to potential poor treatment and inaccurate biomass measurement.

Method used

A system comprising a stun station, dewatering station, and imaging station, equipped with camera modules and an image processing unit, which detects and processes images of aquatic animals post-stun to determine their count, condition, and biomass in real-time, enabling accurate monitoring and treatment.

Benefits of technology

The system enables real-time monitoring and treatment of aquatic animals at harvest, improving fish welfare and accuracy in biomass estimation and count, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the harvesting process.

Abstract

The invention relates to systems, apparatus, and methods of objects such as aquatic animals (e.g. fish) in a harvesting environment. There may be provided A system for monitoring aquatic animals (e.g. fish) at harvest (e.g. in real time) comprising: a (e.g. electric) stun station; a dewatering station; optionally, a processing station (e.g. a post-stun processing station to elicit death, such as percussive stun and / or bleed, and / or ice treatment, and so on); at least one imaging station; and, at the at least one imaging station, an image acquisition unit comprising: at least one camera module configured for capturing images of aquatic animals post (e.g. electric) stun as these pass through the imaging station; an image processing unit of, or operably coupled to, the image acquisition unit comprising: at least one microprocessor; at least one storage medium comprising one or more programs, the one or more programs configured for execution on the at least one microprocessor, the one or more programs comprising instructions for: detecting at least one object in at least one image frame; determining at least one condition associated with the object in the at least one image frame; the at least one condition comprising a first condition of the object being determined to be an aquatic animal of interest; and, in response to the determination of the at least one condition, taking an action associated with the harvesting of aquatic animals.
