Description

Mounting system for electrical installation devicesFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to a mounting system for electrical installation devices arranged in stacks in a holder supporting one or more busbars, i.e., the electrical installation devices being adjacent to one another. The holder supporting the one or more busbars has one or more electrical conductors with contact tongues or contact tabs projecting in the direction of the electrical installation devices, arranged to engage with terminals at a front side of the respective electrical installation device, said front side facing the holder supporting the one or more busbars in a mounting position. Electrical contacting between the electrical installation device and at least one of the conductor tabs or tongues is effected by operating a connection terminal provided on or inside the electrical installation device.

[0002] The present invention also relates to a holder supporting one or more busbars for receiving stacked electrical installation devices in said mounting system.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Electrical installations, e.g., in residential or commercial buildings, typically are arranged in electrical cabinets or enclosures that prevent inadvertently touching conductors, connectors or surfaces that may carry a high voltage. To ensure simple and safe installation, the electrical installation devices in the cabinet or enclosure are usually mounted and arranged on Three Phase and Neutral (TP&N) Distribution Boards (TP&N boards) , the boards or the cabinets having power rails or busbars supported in corresponding holders for connecting the phases and neutral. Often the electrical installation devices are arranged in the cabinets or enclosures in stacked manner, i.e., the electrical installation devices being placed adjacent to one another.

[0004] Electrical installation devices comprise a variety of electrical apparatuses that ensure electrical safety of the installation, such as circuit breakers, residual-current circuit breakers (RCCB) or residual-current devices (RCD) , surge protection device (SPD) , to name just a few.

[0005] For such installations, especially for larger systems with many electric circuits and larger stacks of electrical installation devices, it is also important to make the mounting as simple, safe, and cost-effective as possible.

[0006] As a rule, the installation of individual electrical installation devices on power rails or a holder supporting one or more busbars is carried out in such a way that an electrician holds the device in place at the installation site with one hand, while with the other hand he must operate a tool for fastening the device to the rail or the holder. Simultaneously holding the device in a correct position while operating tools is difficult. Thus, when an electrical installation device is, e.g., installed to the rail or the holder supporting one or more busbars of a TP&N board, an electrician holds the device with one hand and a screwdriver and screw with the other. If the device is not inserted in the right place, he may not notice this immediately and the screw is inserted at an angle, if at all.

[0007] US 2005 / 0175402 A1 discloses an apparatus for detachably mounting an electrical installation device on a rail. The apparatus holds the back of an installation device by suitable flanges or lips and has a locking element or latch biased in its locking position to engage the back of a rail or busbar.

[0008] DE 19709811 A1 discloses an electrical installation device which can be mounted on a mounting rail or busbar by means of at least one retaining slide. The retaining slide can be moved between a holding position and a release position and is movably arranged with a release lever which can be operated from the top of the stackable electrical installation device.

[0009] These known types of mounting electrical installation devices usually require visual inspection of the proper positioning of the electrical installation device and may also require several handling steps and therefore increase time for mounting and cost of assembly.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0010] It is, therefore, a first object of the present invention to overcome or at least reduce the shortcomings of existing solutions and to provide a mounting system in which the construction of electrical installations with multiple stacked electrical installation  devices on a holder supporting one or more busbars is facilitated and made safer. This object is solved by the features of the claim 1. Further embodiments and developments are disclosed in the dependent claims.

[0011] It is a further object of the present invention to design a suitable holder supporting one or more busbars for easy mounting of stacked electrical installation devices. This object is solved by the features of claim 8, while further embodiments and developments of the holder are disclosed in the claims dependent on claim 8.

[0012] In accordance with a first aspect of the invention a mounting system is provided in which, when electrical contact with a respective electrical conductor, or busbar, is to be made, the electrical installation device, when being brought into a proper mounting position in the holder, provides a corresponding indication that such proper mounting position is attained. In this context a proper mounting position is a position of the electrical installation device relative to the holder that permits establishing a secure electrical contact between the electrical installation device and the corresponding busbar. Throughout this specification the terms electrical conductor and busbar are used interchangeably unless explicitly indicated differently or obvious from the context. This indication, or feedback, is provided by means of latching engagement elements. Said latching engagement elements are implemented, on the one hand, by an elastic resilient tab, formed at or mounted to the holder supporting one or more busbars, the tab having a first engagement feature, such as, e.g., a protruding ridge or bulge, and, on the other hand, by a corresponding second engagement feature, such as, e.g., a recess or latching groove, which is provided on the electrical installation device and has a shape that is essentially complementary to the first engagement feature. The first and the second engagement features are designed in such a way that by inserting or pushing the electrical installation device into its proper mounting position, the latching engagement is established by the first engagement feature latching into the second engagement feature. When the latching engagement is established, the resulting haptic and / or acoustic feedback indicate that the electrical installation device has attained a proper mounting position in the holder.

[0013] In one or more embodiments of the invention the acoustic feedback is generated when the first engagement feature engages in the second engagement feature. A  latching sound, e.g., be a simple “click” sound, may be generated when a contact is made between a surface of the first engagement feature and a surface of the second engagement feature. A latching sound may also be generated when a surface of the tab that supports the first engagement feature, and that is deflected while inserting the electrical installation device, snaps back into its initial shape and makes contact with a surface of the holder and / or of the electrical installation device.

[0014] In addition, the latching engagement elements provide a preliminary fixing of the electrical installation device to the holder supporting one or more busbars in said proper mounting position when the latching engagement is established, before establishing proper electrical contact, e.g., by actuating a contacting terminal.

[0015] Next to providing an indication that the electrical installation device is in a proper mounting position the inventive mounting system thus allows for a preliminary fixing of the electrical installation device which can be done with little effort when inserting the electrical installation device into or onto the holder supporting one or more busbars, i.e., can be done by an electrician with only one hand, while establishing proper electrical contact with the respective electrical conductor may be done right afterwards or nearly simultaneously without having to hold the electrical installation device in its mounting position. This significantly reduces the time required for assembly.

[0016] In one or more embodiments of the invention establishing proper electrical contact is established by clamping the conductor to a mating contact area of the electrical installation device, e.g., by means of a contacting terminal. The contacting terminal can be implemented, e.g., as a screw terminal, which simply may be operated by a screwdriver, by a spring-loaded contacting terminal that is engaged by releasing the spring-loaded portion, or the like.

[0017] In one or more embodiments of the invention the protruding first engagement feature at the resilient tab the of the holder supporting one or more busbars is formed as a detent lug or detent hook and the corresponding second engagement feature provided on the electrical installation device is formed as a detent groove complementary to the detent lug or hook. The expressions detent lug, detent hook,  ridge or bulge are used interchangeably herein unless specifically stated or obviously meant not to in the respective context.

[0018] In one or more embodiments of the invention the elastic resilient tab having the first engagement feature is provided on a cover of the holder supporting one or more busbars, preferably on a cover for the electrical conductors.

[0019] The first engagement feature is preferably located at a tip of the tab and may be shaped to promote or facilitate deflection of the elastic resilient tab upon insertion of an electrical device into the holder.

[0020] In one or more embodiments of the invention the protruding first engagement feature is pre-loaded by springs, preferably by leaf springs. Here, the tab itself may provide the function of a leaf spring.

[0021] In one or more embodiments of the invention the protruding first engagement feature overlaps the electrical installation device on an upper side thereof against the direction of insertion and is configured for engaging in a corresponding second engagement feature provided on said upper side.

[0022] In one or more embodiments the latching engagement is a releasable latching engagement, so that the electrical installation device can be removed again from the holder supporting one or more busbars after electrical connection by clamping the conductor has been detached. The latching engagement may be released by lifting the tab, e.g., with a flat blade of a screwdriver or the like. It is also possible to provide complementing shapes of the first engagement feature and the second engagement feature that will release when a force opposite to the insertion direction of the electrical device into the holder exceeds a predetermined value.

[0023] In accordance with a second aspect of the invention a holder of a mounting system in accordance with the first aspect is provided. The holder supports one or more busbars and is adapted for receiving stacked electrical installation devices, arranged adjacent to one another. The holder supporting one or more busbars has one or more electrical conductors, provided with, or connected to, contact elements such as, e.g., tabs or tongues, which project in the direction of the respective electrical installation devices installed therein. The electrical conductors may be formed by the  one or more busbars themselves or may be electrically connected thereto. The contact elements are configured for engaging in or at a front side of the respective electrical installation device facing the holder supporting one or more busbars. The conductors or contact elements can be electrically connected to a correspondingly shaped contact area of the electrical installation device, the contact area preferably being arranged inside the electrical installation device. The holder, or a cover thereof, comprise resiliently supported first engagement features projecting in the direction of the respective electrical installation device, said first engagement features configured to latch into respective corresponding second engagement features arranged on a surface of the electrical installation device when the latter is inserted or pushed into the holder and attains a proper mounting position. The first and second engagement features provide a latching engagement, and further provide an acoustic and / or haptic feedback when an electrical installation device attains a proper mounting position in the holder, as discussed further above.

[0024] In one or more embodiments the latching engagement provides a preliminary fixing and retaining of the electrical installation device in the proper mounting position on the holder supporting one or more busbars.

[0025] In one or more embodiments of the holder in accordance with the second aspect of the invention the first engagement features are arranged to engage in corresponding second engagement features arranged on an upper side of the electrical installation device when it is inserted or pushed in and attains a proper mounting position. The upper side of the electrical installation device is preferred for this purpose, as it facilitates visual control of the engagement process of the first engagement features into the second engagement features.

[0026] In one or more embodiments of the holder in accordance with the second aspect of the invention, the holder supporting one or more busbars, and / or the cover thereof, is made of an insulating material. On the one hand, this prevents unintended contact with conductive elements, while on the other hand, it proposes an easy-to-manufacture construction of the holder supporting one or more busbars and / or the cover thereof This is further supported by a design, in which the first engagement features are pre-loaded by leaf springs formed on the cover or lid portion of the holder, particularly in a design, wherein the first engagement features are designed  as the front end of projecting leaf springs of the lid. As mentioned before, the leaf springs may be integral parts of the holder or the lid portion.

[0027] Preferably the inventive holder supporting one or more busbars is used in a distribution cabinet or enclosure.

[0028] DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0029] In the following section a preferred embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the figures, in which

[0030] Fig. 1 in the form of a principle sketch shows a perspective view of a TP&N distribution board with a holder supporting four busbars that is adapted to cooperate with a mounting system according to the invention, in a condition before inserting an electrical installation device,

[0031] Fig. 2 shows the board and the holder supporting four busbars of Fig. 1 with an electrical installation device in its mounting position, i.e., after insertion onto the holder supporting four busbars of figure 1,

[0032] Fig. 3 shows a side view of the holder supporting four busbars of Fig. 2 with an electrical installation device inserted in its mounting position,

[0033] Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the mounting system of Fig. 2, in which the operation of the connection terminal  / screw terminal by means of a screwdriver is shown.

[0034] In the figures, the same or similar elements and features may be referenced with the same reference signs. For clarification of the invention, it is advantageous to view the figures in synopsis.

[0035] Fig. 1 shows in the form of a principle sketch a perspective view of a TP&N distribution board 100 in which a first exemplary embodiment of the mounting system according to the invention is provided for the incorporation of electrical installation devices 200, the installation devices being arranged in stacks on a holder 300 supporting four busbars 301’, 302’, 303’, 304’. In the sketch, only one installation device 200 is shown for the sake of clarity. Other installation devices may be stacked adjacent to one another, i.e., arranged side by side in the known manner.

[0036] While Fig. 1 shows the condition before fully inserting the electrical installation device 200 onto the holder 300, Fig. 2 shows the electrical installation device 200 in its mounting position, i.e., after being fully inserted into the holder supporting the four busbars.

[0037] The electrical installation device 200 is arranged on the holder 300 supporting the four busbars, said holder having four busbars 301’, 302’, 303’, 304’, which are connected to contact elements 301, 302, 303, 304. The sequence of the contact elements 301, 302, 303 carrying a respective one of three phases is repeated over the length L of the busbar 300, while the contact elements 304, which may be connected to a neutral conductor, is provided for each electrical installation device 200.

[0038] The contact elements 301, 302, 303, 304 project in the direction of the electrical installation device 200 and engage at or in a front side 201 of the respective electrical installation device 200, said front side facing the holder 300 supporting the four busbars in a mounting position, as shown in Fig. 2.

[0039] Electrical contacting between the electrical installation device 200 and the busbar 301’ or the respective connected tab or tongue 301 is established by engaging a connection terminal provided within the electrical installation device 200. The connection terminal is not shown in detail here but is designed as a screw terminal, which is operated with by means of a screwdriver through the hole 202, as shown in Fig. 4. The tab or tongue 301 is thus clamped to a mating contact area inside of the electrical installation device 200.

[0040] To clamp the contact element 301, i.e., to establish contact with the busbar 301' via its contact element 301, the electrical installation device 200 is brought into a proper mounting position 210 relative to the holder 300 of the four busbars before the contacting terminal is operated. Attaining the proper mounting position is indicated by an audible "click” sound, and a haptic indication is provided by a latching engagement, which securely holds the electrical installation device 200 in place before operating the contacting terminal. The latching engagement is formed, on the one hand, by an elastically resiliently protruding tab having a first engagement feature 320 formed at the holder 300 supporting the four busbars and, on the other hand, by a second engagement feature 220 which is provided on the electrical  installation device 200 and is shaped complementary to the first engagement feature 320.

[0041] The first engagement feature 320 and the second engagement features 220 are designed in such a way that by inserting or pushing the electrical installation device 200 into its proper mounting position 210, the latching engagement is engaged by the first engagement feature 320 latching into the first engagement feature 220. Inserting and pushing the electrical installation device 200 into its mounting position 210 is indicated by arrow 230 in Fig. 1.

[0042] As mentioned above, mounting of the electrical installation device 200 can thus be done by an electrician with only one hand, while contacting it with the electrical conductor 301 may be done right afterwards and nearly simultaneously with a screwdriver as a tool through the hole 202, as shown in Fig. 4, without having to manually hold the electrical installation device 200 in its mounting position.

[0043] The protruding first engagement feature shown in the figure is formed as a resiliently elastic detent hook 320 and the second engagement feature is formed as a detent recess 220 complementary to the detent hook, as best seen in Fig. 3, highlighted by the circle drawn in a dashed-line.

[0044] The elastically resiliently protruding tab carrying the first engagement feature 320 is provided on cover 310 of the holder 300 supporting the four busbars. The tab carrying the first engagement feature 320 may form or may be pre-loaded by a leaf spring 311. The cover may also serve as an insulator for the busbars 301, 301’, 302. 302’, 303, 303’ underneath.

[0045] Fig. 3 shows a side view of the holder 300 supporting four busbars with an electrical installation device 200 inserted in its mounting position 210.

[0046] Fig. 4 is a further perspective view of a distribution board with a holder 300 supporting four busbars in a mounting system according to the invention, in which the operation of the connection terminal  / screw terminal within the installation device 200 using a screwdriver 110 through the hole 202 is shown.

[0047] Looking at Figs. 1 to 4 together, it is readily apparent that in the mounting position the first engagement feature hook 320 overlaps the electrical installation device 200  on its upper side 203 in the direction of insertion, see arrow 230, and engages in the second engagement feature 220 provided in a front section of said upper side 203.

[0048] When mounting the electrical installation device 200, it is of great advantage that the achievement of the correct mounting position 210 for contacting is indicated by a haptic or acoustic signal, so that the electrician knows that the device is correctly inserted. To achieve this the shape and dimensions of the first engagement features 320 on the one hand and the corresponding second engagement features 220 on the other hand are such that a latching noise, i.e., a “click-sound” is generated when the first engagement feature 320 engages with the corresponding second engagement feature 220.

[0049] Fig. 5 shows a further embodiment of the holder of the distribution board, similar to the one shown in figure 1, with details of the first engagement element of the holder, or the cover of the holder, and the second engagement element of the electrical installation device highlighted in the circles drawn in dashed lines. Here, the tab having the first engagement element has a roughly U-shaped recess, such that two prongs protrude towards the electrical installation device, each prong having a respective first engagement element. The U-shaped recess facilitates a visual inspection of the established latching engagement, and further provides easy access for operating the terminal, for establishing proper electrical contact, in case the terminal is located close to the insertion end of the electrical installation device, or when the design of the tab requires protruding further out for providing a desired springiness thereof, as will be more evident from Fig. 7.

[0050] Fig. 6 shows the electrical installation device in its proper mounting position in the holder in accordance with the further embodiment of Fig. 5. The Figure essentially corresponds to Fig. 2 and will not be described in detail.

[0051] Fig. 7 shows how the two prongs of the tabs having the first engagement feature and the roughly U-shaped recess facilitate operating the terminal of the electrical installation device for establishing proper electrical contact. The U-shaped recess also permits a visual inspection of the proper contact between the contact elements and the contacting terminal.
