Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to position tracking of a terminal device. In an aspect, a first network device determines whether to switch from positioning-based tracking of the terminal device to sensing-based tracking of the terminal device based on a first switching condition, or whether to switch from the sensing-based tracking to the positioning-based tracking based on a second switching condition. In this way, signaling load, and the PRS or SRS resource utilization are reduced and the energy consumption to track the UE location are lowered.

Description

POSITION TRACKING OF TERMINAL DEVICEFIELD

[0001] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communications, and in particular, to devices, methods, apparatuses and a computer readable storage medium for position tracking of a terminal device.BACKGROUND

[0002] In the communication technology, there is a constant evolution ongoing in order to provide efficient and reliable solutions for utilizing wireless communication networks. Each new generation has its own technical challenges for handling different situations and processes that are needed to connect and serve devices connected to wireless networks. To meet the demand for wireless data traffic having increased since deployment of 4th generation (4G) communication systems, efforts have been made to develop an improved 5th generation (5G) , pre-5G, 6G communication systems or beyond.

[0050] The term “terminal device” refers to a device of a communication system of a cellular network, such as a 5th generation communication system (5GS) that may be capable  of wireless (e.g., radio) communication with a NR-RAN of the 5GS) . By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a wireless communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . Examples of a terminal device include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (for example, remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (for example, a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0051] The objectives of the sensing study may include, for example, study use cases and potential requirements for enhancement of the 5G system to provide integrated communication and sensing services addressing different target verticals / applications, e.g. autonomous / assisted driving, V2X, aviation / UAVs, 3D map reconstruction, smart city / factories, public sectors, healthcare, smart home, maritime sector; identifying Key performance indicators (KPIs) related to NR based sensing (e.g. range, motion, velocity) and performance requirements for transferring sensing related data; and aspects related to security, privacy, regulatory requirements and charging.

[0052] The current 3GPP-based positioning methods require very intensive signalling to track a (moving) UE over time. In the context of this disclosure, the suffixes “-based” and “-assisted” may refer respectively to the node that is responsible for making the positioning calculation (and which may also provide measurements) and a node that provides measurements (but which does not make the positioning calculation) . Thus, an operation in which measurements are provided by the UE to the LMF to be used in the computation of a position estimate is described as “UE-assisted” (and could also be called “LMF-based” ) ,  while one in which the UE computes its own position is described as “UE-based” . With the goal to save energy and communication resources, this signaling load is causing overhead on both UE and network side, especially when the device is an energy constrained device such as Reduced Capability (RedCap) or Low-Power High-Accuracy Positioning (LPHAP) UE. Therefore, reducing the signaling load, reducing the positioning reference signal (PRS) or sounding reference signal (SRS) resource utilization and lowering the energy consumption to track the UE location is critical.

[0053] In view of the above, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for position tracking of a terminal device, for example, for an enhanced location service based on network-based sensing and position probing. In the example embodiments of the present disclosure, a first network device may determine, whether to switch from positioning-based tracking of a terminal device to sensing-based tracking of the terminal device based on a first switching condition, or whether to switch from the sensing-based tracking to the positioning-based tracking based on a second switching condition. Based on determining to switch from the positioning-based tracking to the sensing-based tracking, the first network device transmits, to the terminal device, a first indication for suspending or stopping a positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking. Based on determining to switch from the sensing-based tracking to the positioning-based tracking, the first network device transmits, to the terminal device, a second indication for resuming the first positioning session or starting a second positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking. In this way, signaling load, and the PRS or SRS resource utilization can be reduced and the energy consumption to track the UE location can be lowered.

[0054] FIG. 1A illustrates an example of a network environment 100a in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The environment 100 may be a part of a communication network and comprise a plurality of terminal devices and network devices, such as a first network device 110, a second network device 120 and a terminal device 130. As an example, the first network device 110 may be implemented as location management function (LMF) sensing function (SF) , or Sensing Management Function (SeMF) . The second network device 120 may be implemented as a new base station (gNB) , Transmission Reception Point (TRP) or a base station (BS) . The terminal device 130 may be implemented as a User Equipment (UE) or an Access Terminal (AT) . The first network  device 110 and the second network device 120 may transmit various data to the terminal device 130 via network environment 100a.

[0055] To transmit data and / or control information, the terminal device 130 may perform communications with the first network device 110 and the second network device 120. A link from the first network device 110 and / or the second network device 120 to the terminal device 130 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the first network device 110 and / or the second network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) .

[0056] Although the first network device 110, the second network device 120 and the terminal device 130 are described in the communication environment 100a of FIG. 1A, embodiments of the present disclosure may equally apply to any other suitable communication devices in communication with one another. That is, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to the exemplary scenarios of FIG. 1A. In this regard, it is noted that although the terminal device 130 is schematically depicted as a mobile phone and the first network device 110 and the second network device 120 are schematically depicted as a base station or a server in FIG. 1A, it is understood that these depictions are exemplary in nature without suggesting any limitation. In other embodiments, the first network device 110, the second network device 120, and the terminal device 130 may be any other communication devices, for example, any other wireless communication devices.

[0057] It is to be understood that the particular number of various communication devices and the particular number of various communication links as shown in FIG. 1A is for illustration purpose only without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 100a may include any suitable number of communication devices and any suitable number of communication links for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. In addition, it should be appreciated that there may be various wireless as well as wireline communications (if needed) among all of the communication devices.

[0058] FIG. 1B illustrates several sensing methods implemented by example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the FIG. 1B, block 100b may be regarded as a mono-static network based sensing system, where a single access node (e.g., gNB) 120b acts as sounder and sensor (e.g., is configured as a sensing receiver and a sensing transmitter) . Block 100c may be regarded as a bi-static (or multi-static) network based sensing system, where one access node (e.g., gNB) 120c acts as sounder (e.g., is configured as a sensing transmitter) and  another access node (s) (e.g., gNB 130c) (or other gNBs) acts as sensor (e.g., is (are) configured as a sensing receiver (s) ) .

[0059] Block 100d may be regarded as a mono-static UE based sensing system, where a single UE 130d acts as sounder and sensor (e.g., is configured as a sensing receiver and a sensing receiver) . Block 100e may be regarded as a bi-static (or multi-static) UE based sensing system, where one UE 120e acts as sounder (e.g., is configured as a sensing transmitter) and another UE 130e (or other UEs) acts as sensor (e.g., is (are) configured as a sensor receiver (s) ) .

[0060] Block 100f may be regarded as a DL-based collaborative sensing system, where one access node (e.g., gNB 120f) acts as sounder and one UE 130f (or UEs) acts as sensor (e.g., acts as a sensing receiver) . Block 100g may be regarded as a UL-based collaborative sensing system, where one UE 130g acts as sounder (e.g., is configured as a sensing transmitter) and one access node (e.g., gNB) 120g (or multiple gNBs) acts as sensor (e.g., one access node is configured as a sensing receiver or multiple access nodes are configured as sensing receivers) . Block 100h may be regarded as another example of mono-static network based sensing system, where the target 140h is a vehicle. Block 100i may be regarded as another example of bi-static (or multi-static) network based sensing system, where the target 140i is a vehicle.

[0061] In the context of this disclosure, sensing, or passive positioning, may be referred to estimating the position of a target that does not transmit any radio signals. The target only reflects an external radio signal, and that reflection is received by another radio, and used to determine the position of the target, i.e., like in RADAR. When the transmitter and the receiver are co-located, the sensing is called monostatic. When the transmitter and the receiver are at different locations, the sensing may be referred to bistatic. When multiple transmitter-receiver pairs are employed, the sensing may be referred to multistatic. Since sensing is a passive process, the target is not involved at all in it. Even when a target user is equipped with a UE, network-based passive sensing may be performed more often than active localization, thus avoiding the intensive positioning-related signaling and saving energy at the UE.

[0062] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart of method according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It would be appreciated that although the method 200 has been  described referring to FIG. 1, this method 200 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0063] In the process flow 200, a first network device 110 may determine (205) whether to switch from positioning-based tracking of a terminal device 130 to sensing-based tracking of the terminal device 130 based on a first switching condition, or whether to switch from the sensing-based tracking to the positioning-based tracking based on a second switching condition.

[0064] In some embodiments, the first network device 110 may then transmit (210) a first indication 204 for suspending or stopping a positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking to the terminal device 130 based on determining to switch from the positioning-based tracking to the sensing-based tracking. The terminal device 130 may then receive (215) the first indication 204 for suspending a positioning session associated with positioning-based tracking of the terminal device from a first network device and suspend (230) the positioning session based on receiving the first indication. The terminal device 130 may also trigger sensing based positioning of the terminal device 130 if the terminal device 130 is performing non-sensing based positioning of the terminal device 130.

[0065] In some other embodiments, the first network device 110 may transmit (220) a second indication 206 for resuming the first positioning session or starting a second positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking to the terminal device 130 based on determining to switch from the sensing-based tracking to the positioning-based tracking. The terminal device 130 may receive (225) the second indication 206 for resuming the first positioning session or starting a second positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking from the first network device 110 and resume the first positioning session or start the second positioning session based on receiving the second indication 206.

[0066] In one example, the positioning session is the first positioning session, and the first network device 110 may determine whether the second switching condition is fulfilled. If the first network device 110 determines that the second switching condition is fulfilled, the first network device 110 may transmit the second indication 206 for resuming the first positioning session or starting the second positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking to the terminal device 130.

[0067] The second switching condition may comprise an identifier of the terminal device  130 needs to be obtained or refreshed with a periodicity or once, position tracking of the terminal device is lost or position information specific to the terminal device 130 becomes unreliable, the sensing-based tracking is configured with a time offset for switching back to the positioning-based tracking, the terminal device 130 has a predefined mobility profile, collision avoidance related to the terminal device 130 is to be performed, probing specific to a geographical area is to be performed, the terminal device 130 enters an area in which the sensing-based tracking is not allowed, or any combination of the above-mentioned items.

[0068] In some embodiments, the first network device 110 may determine a sensing configuration for a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking based on positioning information of the terminal device 130 determined during the suspended positioning session. The first network device 110 may then transmit the sensing configuration to at least one second network device 120 which is selected to perform the sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking. Alternatively, or additionally, the first network device 110 transmit a muting indication for muting sensing signals from the at least one second network device 120 to abort the sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking to the at least one second network device 120.

[0069] The positioning information may comprise angular information, range information, velocity information, or Doppler information. In some further examples, if the first network device 110 is performing non-sensing based positioning of the terminal device, the first network device 110 may trigger sensing based positioning of the terminal device.

[0070] In some embodiments, the first switching condition may comprise in the event that a reliability assessment of a sensed position of the terminal device indicates that the sensed position is reliable, determining to switch from the positioning-based tracking to the sensing-based tracking, in the event that the reliability assessment indicates that the sensed position is unreliable, determining not to switch from the positioning-based tracking to the sensing-based tracking, in the event that terminal device is in low-activity state including RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE state where sensing doesn’ t require terminal device to switch to RRC CONNECTED mode, or in the event that terminal device is in power saving mode including CM IDLE state where sensing doesn’ t require terminal device to switch to CM CONNECTED mode. It is noted that terminal device can be in low-activity state from user plane viewpoint for power saving reasons in communications or in connectivity. The RRC IDLE and / or RRC INACTIVE states in RAN and CM IDLE in core network can be defined as “low-activity states” .

[0071] In some further embodiments, the first network device 110 may perform the reliability assessment through the following operations. For example, the first network device 110 may determine a first positioning estimate of the terminal device 130 based on non-sensing based positioning of the terminal device. Also, the first network device 110 may determine a second positioning estimate of the terminal device 130 based on sensing based positioning of the terminal device. Then, the first network device 110 may determine whether a difference between the first positioning estimate and the second positioning estimate is below a predefined threshold.

[0072] In some further embodiments, the first network device 110 may perform the reliability assessment through the following operations. For example, the first network device 110 may determine a first reliability level of a first positioning estimate of the terminal device based on non-sensing based positioning of the terminal device. Also, the first network device 110 can determine a second reliability level of a second positioning estimate of the terminal device based on sensing based positioning of the terminal device. Next, the first network device 110 can perform the reliability assessment based on the first reliability level and the second reliability level.

[0073] In some further embodiments, (i) a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking, (ii) the second switching condition, or (iii) entering a positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking may be based on a capability of the terminal device or a power saving requirement. In some examples, the positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking may be established based on a New Radio (NR) positioning procedure. Alternatively or additionally, the suspended positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking may be resumed with a partial or whole configuration from a previous positioning instance.

[0074] In some embodiments, the first network device 110 may suspend the positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking by storing configuration information of a positioning method configured by the first network device 110 for the terminal device 130. In some further embodiments, the first network device 110 may receive a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration from a second network device 120 when suspending the positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking. Alternatively, or additionally, the first network device 110 may activate or deactivate the SRS configuration based on a transition between the positioning-based tracking and the sensing-based tracking.

[0075] In some embodiments, the first network device 110 may perform location management function (LMF) and a sensing function (SF) , and the first network device 110 may determine to perform a sensing session associated with the positioning-based tracking, a positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking, or a combination of the sensing session and the positioning session, such that a target quality of service (QoS) of positioning of the terminal device is achieved, resource consumption is minimized, or multiple measurements by reusing multiple resources is combined.

[0076] In some further embodiments, the first network device 110 may perform a LMF, and the first network device 110 may transmit a discovery request for discovering an SF to a network repository function (NRF) based on determining that the first switching condition is fulfilled. The discovery request may include selection criterion, such as an applicable geographic area, an applicable location area, a target profile of the terminal device, wherein the terminal device operates as an active target or a passive target, an expected QoS of positioning of the terminal device, capability of sensing measurements from the terminal device and the SF, context of the discovery request, or a regulatory requirement.

[0077] The first network device 110 may then receive a discovery response indicating the SF selected based on the at least one selection criterion from the NRF. The first network device 110 may then transmit a sensing request for requesting a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking to the SF. In some embodiments, when the first network device 110 may perform a LMF, it may transmit a sensing request for requesting a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking to an access and mobility management function (AMF) based on determining that the first switching condition is fulfilled, such that the AMF transmits the sensing request to an SF selected by the AMF.

[0078] The selection criterion may comprise an applicable geographic area, an applicable location area, a target profile of the terminal device 130, an expected QoS of positioning of the terminal device 130, capability of sensing measurements from the terminal device 130 and the SF, context of the discovery request, a regulatory requirement, context of the terminal device 130, subscription information of the terminal device 130, or any combination of the above-mentioned items. The terminal device 130 may operate as an active target or a passive target.

[0079] In some further embodiments, the first network device 110 may receive a sensing response including at least one sensing measurement of the terminal device 130 from the SF  and determine a position of the terminal device 130 based on the at least one sensing measurement. In some examples, in the event that a transmitting device and a receiving device in a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking are terminal devices, the first network device 110 may determine whether sidelink positioning is to be performed during a positioning session for the positioning-based tracking based on sensing context information.

[0080] Alternatively, or additionally, in the event that the transmitting device and the receiving device are access network devices, the first network device 110 may determine at least one access network device from a plurality of access network devices to transmit a positioning reference signal (PRS) to the terminal device 130 during the positioning session based on the sensing context information.

[0081] In some embodiments, a second network device 120 may receive (235) a sensing configuration 208 for performing a sensing session associated with sensing-based tracking of a terminal device transmitted (230) from the first network device 110. The sensing configuration 208 may be determined based on positioning information of the terminal device determined during a positioning session associated with positioning-based tracking of the terminal device. The second network device 120 may perform the sensing session based on the sensing configuration 208.

[0082] In some embodiments, the terminal device 130 is a first terminal device, and the second network device 120 may perform the sensing session by steering a transmit beam towards an area in which the first terminal device is located, or selecting a sounding waveform to isolate the first terminal device and a second terminal device based on motion characteristics of the first terminal device and the second terminal device.

[0083] In some embodiments, the terminal device 130 is a first terminal device, and the second network device 120 may perform the sensing session by detecting a sensing signal from a direction corresponding to an area in which the first terminal device is located, and / or separating the first terminal device and a second terminal device based on motion characteristics of the first terminal device and the second terminal device.

[0084] In some further embodiments, the second network device 120 receive, from the first network device 110, a muting indication for muting sensing signals from the second network device. Alternatively, or Additionally, the second network device 120 may transmit a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration to the first network device 110 when  suspending the positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking.

[0085] In some embodiments, the terminal device 130 may suspend the positioning session by storing configuration information of a positioning method configured by the first network device 110 for the terminal device 130. The configuration information may comprise capability information of the terminal device, assistance data, a positioning reference signal (PRS) configuration, a location information type and an associated quality of service (QoS) , an information element related to a long term evolution (LTE) positioning protocol (LPP) protocol, an information element related to a new radio (NR) positioning protocol A (NRPPa) protocol, or any combination of the aforementioned items.

[0086] FIG. 3 illustrates a flow chart of sensing-based UE tracking according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that in the context of this disclosure, although the NR architecture is employed as the example of main embodiments and implementation, the devices or methods implemented by this disclosure also apply to the 5G-Advanced and the 6G (+) network or beyond.

[0087] At block 302, UE positioning process may be initiated. The UE may be first positioned using 3GPP standard methods, such as UE-based positioning or UE-assisted positioning. At the same time, the UE may be tracked based on multi-static network-based sensing, which does not involve any measurements nor signaling at the UE side.

[0088] At block 304, the network device may determine the conditions or configuration for sensing to enable the sensing-based tracking. For example, if the positioning and sensing location estimates are sufficiently close, the network device, such as LMF, Location Management Component (LMC) , Sensing Function (SF) , or Sensing Management Function (SeMF) , may switch from positioning-based tracking to sensing-based tracking of the target device (UE) . The context of the positioning-based tracking may be used as assistance to sensing-based tracking, and vice versa.

[0089] At block 312, the prior positioning information, such as range, angle and Doppler information may be used to perform sensing, for example, illuminating the target device of interest by beamforming reference signal into its direction, etc. At block 306, the sensing-based UE tracking may be initiated.

[0090] At block 308, the requirement that the probing criterion is fulfilled is checked. When the probing criterion is fulfilled, the sensing-based tracking of the target UE needs to be verified. For example, if the sensed target is lost, or the sensing receiver and / or system  has lost the tracking capability, the positioning procedure may be triggered, called target probing by resuming the positioning session. It is also noted that in case the previous positioning session was not suspended (parameters and / or capabilities not available) , a new positioning session can be triggered.

[0091] At block 310, when probing criterion is not fulfilled, the sensing-based UE tracking or sensing mode may continue as long as the target UE may be followed, i.e., until a probing criterion is fulfilled. The sensing context information, such as nearby sounder device (signal sender, or target illuminator) and sensor device (signal receiver) may provide guidance whether SL positioning can be used when such devices are UE, or which of the TRP shall be chosen to send on-demand PRS signal when such devices are RAN nodes.

[0092] The LMF and SF or SeMF functions may be separated into different Network Functions and they can be enhanced with a standard procedure to allow interaction between location function and sensing function. The above process may be repeated, and the target UE may be probed based on a metric describing the sensing reliability (e.g., position sensing error) .

[0093] The main goal of this hybrid positioning or sensing procedure is to enhance to current 3GPP-based position tracking methods by saving energy and communication resources. A substantial reduction of signalling required for continuous UE position tracking may be done by performing less frequent active positioning, and more frequent passive sensing. It is also noted that in the context of this disclosure, suspension is typically followed by "resume" , which requires extra functionality from the protocol (storing the suspended session parameters, defining the validity area, etc. ) . Alternatively, there is an option where the suspended session is just restarted (in RAN) . Restart requires new configuration but on the other hand there is no need to store the session parameters. In RAN restarting the session may be supported, and in core network, suspension and the indicated signalling flow supporting suspension may be used.

[0094] FIG. 4 illustrates a process flow in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that FIG. 4 can be deemed as a further example of the process flow 200. For example, the LMF 410 may be example devices of the first network device 110, the gNB 420-a and 420-b may be example devices of the second network device 120, and the UE 430 be example devices of the terminal device 130. It is to be understood  that these devices are described only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the disclosure. This process will be described in detail as follows.

[0095] As illustrated in FIG. 4, at step 402, the positioning of UE 430 may be used 3GPP approach, such as UE capability, the LTE positioning protocol (LPP) , or a new radio (NR) positioning protocol A (NRPPa) protocol. At step 404, both UE 430 and the LMF 410 may trigger the sensing-based positioning process. At step 406, the LMF 410 may determine appropriate sensing configuration based on the sensing capabilities and prior location information.

[0096] At step 408, the LMF may probe the UE 430 for network-based sensing to assess the sensing reliability. When the legacy position estimate is available, legacy positioning estimate may be used as a reference for assessing the sensing reliability. For example, an assessment criterion may be the positioning error between the legacy positioning estimate plegacy and the position estimate obtained by sensing psensing. When the magnitude of such error exceeds some predefined threshold ε, the sensed position may be considered unreliable. The threshold may be predefined by the UE 430, or by network devices, such as the LMF 410, depending on the use case. The corresponding criterion is ||plegacy-psensing||>ε                   (1)

[0097] Additional criteria may be defined using the reliability of the legacy positioning estimate and the reliability of the sensed position estimate. For example, the legacy position estimation covariance matrix and the sensed position covariance matrix may be regarded as an error ellipse / ellipsoids. Depending on the characteristics of these matrices, it may be determined to trust more the sensing or the positioning to resume the positioning session respectively.

[0098] At step 412, when the sensed position and the legacy position estimates are sufficiently close according to the predefined threshold, which means the required QoS may be met with sensing-based tracking, the LMF 410 may switch from positioning-based tracking to sensing-based tracking and track the UE 430 through sensing only. At step 414, the LMF may transmit a suspend indication for positioning session to the UE 430.

[0099] At step 416, in response to receive the suspend indication from the LMF 410, the UE 430 may suspend the positioning session. In some embodiments, suspending the  positioning session may include storing the configuration information (for example, capability information, assistance data, PRS configuration, location information type and associated QoS, and other common information elements related to LPP protocol) of positioning method configured by LMF 410 for the UE 430.

[0100] At step 418, the LMF 410 may process collected sensing measurement data and derive results. When suspending the positioning session, the gNB 420-a or 420-b may provide the current SRS configuration to the LMF 410. Configuration may also include semi-persistent or aperiodic SRS, which may be resumed afterwards, e.g., the LMF 410 may activate or deactivate the SRS as part of transition between sensing and positioning for location tracking. At step 422, the LMF 410 may sense the position of the UE 430.

[0101] The prior positioning-related information may be used to help sensing. The angular information may be used to focus the transmission beams and receiving beams at the target UE directions. On the other hand, the range information may be used to scale the transmission signals’ power appropriately. For instance, if there are two target device, one device quite closer to either the transmission or receiving and another far away, the reflections from the nearby target device may mask the weak reflections from the second target device. Hence, it is important to scale the two transmission signals so that the weak target’s reflections are also received with sufficient power. In addition, the velocity information may be used to isolate targets with different velocities. The proper waveform may be chosen depending on the use case.

[0102] In some embodiments, when the LMF 410 switches from legacy position-tracking mode to the sensing-only tracking mode, the legacy position information may be absent, and the reliability of the sensed position needs to be assessed based on other criteria. At step 424, when the sensing reliability is insufficient, target probing may be triggered, i.e., switching back to legacy positioning mode.

[0103] In an embodiment, to start the positioning session or resume the positioning session, the probing criteria needs to be met. The probing criteria may include, but are not limited to: the UE ID of the sensing UE 430 needs to be known (e.g., by active positioning session) or target ID needs to be refreshed with some periodicity, the location tracking of sensing UE 430 is lost or location information specific to UE 430 compromised, the sensing process is configured with a time-offset to enter the active positioning session, e.g., one-time positioning, (semi-) persistent or periodic positioning, the sensing UE 430 has a specific  mobility profile, collision avoidance related to the UE 430, geographical area specific probing, the sensed target UE 430 enters an area where there is no permission to use sensing-based location tracking, or any combination of the above.

[0104] In some embodiments, the location tracking of sensing UE 430 is lost or location information specific to UE 430 compromised is caused by sensing signal propagation and / or environment causes discontinuity to sensing result (e.g., drone crossing a tall building, Line-of-sight is lost and the sensing-based location tracking provides too unreliable results) , or the targets spatially overlap due to similar / crossing trajectories while sensing two or more targets, and the sensing result becomes unreliable.

[0105] In some embodiments, the sensing UE 430 has a specific mobility profile, for example, because sensing UE 430 is static and probed once some movement is observed; sensing UE 430 is moving sporadically, and UE 430 can be positioned after the mobility profile has changed; sensing UE 430 changes its mobility characteristics that are different from the area average, or area allowed profile (e.g., sensing target accelerates / stops in an area where it is not allowed) .

[0106] In some embodiments, the collision avoidance happens when sensing-based target tracking becomes unreliable, and the active positioning session is resumed. For example, when a vehicle needs to be precisely parked in an area where the reflections cause interference to the sensing-based location accuracy. The collision avoidance also happens when sensing-based target tracking is not allowed, and the active positioning session is resumed, e.g., autonomous mobile robots crossing a narrow corridor or pedestrian area.

[0107] In some embodiments, the geographical area specific probing happens when the sensing-based target UE 430 enters a geographical area where accurate location tracking is needed. For example, an automotive steering switches from sensing to active positioning when entering a garage. In some embodiments, the sensing process, probing criteria and entering the positioning session may be based on UE 430 capabilities and / or power saving requirements, for example for RedCap or for Low-power High-accuracy Positioning (LPHAP) . In such a case, the positioning session may be suspended for energy saving and the network device, such as LMF 410, may starts the target location tracking by sensing until the probing criteria is met and network switches back to active positioning session.

[0108] In some embodiments, the UE 430 related positioning session may be established according to the NR Positioning procedures, or the previous suspended UE positioning  session may be resumed with partial or whole configuration from the previous positioning instance. At step 426, the LMF 410 may resume the positioning session.

[0109] Alternatively, or additionally, in a monostatic sensing, the transmitter and receiver may correspond to the same TRP or gNBs 420-a or 420-b, and in bi-static sensing or multi-static sensing, the transmitter and receiver may correspond to different / non-collocated two / more TRPs 420-a or 420-b. The LMF 410 may configure the relevant TRPs or gNBs 420-a or 420-b for sensing over the NRPPa protocol. For example, LMF 410 may transmit the sensing configuration (relying on prior information about range, angle and Doppler) to the relevant TRPs or gNB 420-a or 420-b in order to facilitate sensing.

[0110] The transmit TRPs or gNBs 420-a or 420-b may utilize the sensing configuration from the LMF 410 to transmit the sensing signals, for example, to focus the transmission beam towards the areas of interest and illuminate the targets or select appropriate sounding waveform to isolate targets based on their velocities and ranges. The receive TRPs or gNBs 420-a or 420-b may utilize the provided sensing configuration from the LMF 410 for the reception of the sensing signals, for example, to listen to the directions corresponding to the area of the targets, or separate targets based on their motion characteristics (range, velocity, etc. ) . The LMF 410 may transmit the muting configurations for the TRPs or gNBs 420-a or 420-b to abort the current positioning sessions and facilitate sensing. In some embodiments, the LMF 410 may activate the muting of sensing signals for the TRPs or gNBs 420-a or 420-b to abort the sensing sessions and facilitate / resume positioning.

[0111] FIG. 5 illustrates a flow chart related to an enhancement of Location Deferred Request (LDR) with sensing according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated in the flow chart 500, at step 502, an external location services client (LCS) 505 may send a request to the (H) GMLC 510 for location reporting for periodic, triggered or UE available location events.

[0112] At step 504, an Application Function (AF) 515 may invoke the Nnef_EventExposure_Subscribe service operation to the Network Exposure Function (NEF) 520. At step 506, the NEF 520 may forward the request to the (H) Gateway Mobile Location Centre (GMLC) 510. At step 508, a NF (e.g. NWDAF) 525 may invoke the Ngmlc_Location_ProvideLocation service operation to the (H) GMLC 510.

[0114] At step 516, the (H) GMLC 510 may obtain a VGMLC address if not received at step 514 and invoke the Ngmlc_Location_Provide Location Request service operation to forward the location request to the VGMLC 535. At step 518, the (H) GMLC 510 or VGMLC 535 may invokes the Namf_Location_ProvidePositioningInfo Request service operation to forward the location request to the serving Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) 540.

[0115] From steps 522 to step 526c, if the AMF 540 supports a deferred location request, the AMF 540 may return an acknowledgment to the external LCS client 505, the NF 525, or the AF 515, via the (H) GMLC 510 and, in the case of roaming, the VGMLC 535, indicating that the request for deferred location was accepted. At step 528, if the UE 545 is not currently reachable (e.g. is using eDRX or PSM) , the AMF 540 may wait for the UE 545 to become reachable.

[0116] At step 532, once the UE 545 is reachable, if the UE 545 is then in CM IDLE state, the AMF 540 may initiate a network triggered Service Request procedure. From steps 534 to 536, the AMF 540 may notify the UE 545 of the location request and verify privacy requirements if required by the location request received at step 518 and supported by the UE 545. At step 538, The AMF 540 may select an LMF 550. At step 542, the AMF 540 may invoke the Nlmf_Location_DetermineLocation Request service operation towards the LMF or Sensing Function (SF) 550 to initiate a request for deferred UE location.

[0117] At step 544, the AMF 540 the LMF or SF 550 may perform one or more of the positioning procedures. For example, the LMF or SF 550 may use the probing criteria to decide the sensing or positioning session, or hybrid session to achieve the target QoS (accuracy, time delay, etc. ) , minimize the resource consumption (such as, reference signal needed, measurements’ devices / entities needed) , and combine the multiple measurements with reusing various resources. It is noted that LMF and SF / SeMF 550 may be co-located or interacted using implementation specific interface.

[0118] At step 546, if periodic or triggered location was requested, the LMF 550 may sends a supplementary services LCS Periodic-Triggered Invoke Request to the UE 545 via the serving AMF by invoking the Namf_Communication_N1N2MessageTransfer service  operation. At step 548, if the request can be supported, the UE 545 may return a supplementary services acknowledgment to the LMF 550.

[0119] At step 552, the LMF 550 may invoke the Nlmf_Location_DetermineLocation Response service operation towards the AMF 540 to respond to the request at step 542. At step 554, the AMF 540 may invoke the Namf_Location_EventNotify service operation towards the VGMLC for roaming, or (H) GMLC 510 for non-roaming. At step 556, for a roaming UE, The VGMLC 535 may forward the response received at step 19 to the HGMLC 510 using the HGMLC contact address received at step 554.

[0120] From step 558a to step 558c, the (H) GMLC 510 may forwards the response to the external LCS client 505, the NF 525 or the AF 515 (via the NEF 520) . At step 560, for a periodic or triggered location request where steps 546 and 548 were successfully performed, the UE 545 may monitor for occurrence of the trigger or periodic event requested in step 546. At step 562, the UE 545 may obtain any location measurements or a location estimate that were requested or allowed.

[0121] At step 564, the UE 545 may perform a UE triggered service request. At step 566, the UE 545 may send a supplementary services event report message to the LMF 550. At step 568, when the LMF 550 receives the event report and if it can handle this event report, the LMF 550 may update the status of event reporting. At step 570, if a location estimate is needed for event reporting, the LMF or SF 550 may perform one or more of the positioning procedures.

[0122] At step 572, in the case of roaming, the LMF 550 may select a VGMLC 535, the LMF 550 may then invoke an Nlmf_Location_EventNotify service operation towards the selected VGMLC 535 or (H) GMLC 510. At step 574, for a roaming UE, the VGMLC 535 may invoke an Ngmlc_Location_EventNotify service operation to forward the information received in step 572.

[0123] From steps 574a to 574c, the (H) GMLC 510 may use the LDR reference number received in step 572 or steps 574a-c to identify the periodic and triggered location request received in step 502 and then sends the type of event being reported and any location estimate  and the timestamp of the location estimate (if available) and used positioning methods to the external LCS client 505. At step 576, the UE 545 may continue to monitor for further periodic or trigger events.

[0124] FIG. 6 illustrates a flow chart related to interactions between LMF and SF / SeMF according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, LMF 610 and SF / SeMF 615 are separated NF and they may be enhanced with a standard procedure. As illustrated in the flow chart 600, at step 602, positioning procedures may be initiated as described in FIG. 5. At step 604, the AMF 605 may transmit location request to LMF 610. At step 606, UE assisted and UE based positioning procedure may be initiated.

[0125] At step 608, the LMF 610 may determine whether probing criteria is met. The probing criteria may be used to trigger the switchover from LCS procedure to sensing procedure. For the decision at step 608, at step 606, there may be sensing measurements collected besides normal LCS information.

[0126] In the steps 612a, 614a and 616, the LMF 610 may use NRF 640 to locate the appropriate SF / SeMF 615. The selection criteria may include: the applicable geographic area / location area; the target UE 625 profile; the expected QoS; the capable of sensing measurements from target UE 625 and the SF / SeMF 615 instance; from the context of the request, for instance, the SF / SeMF 615 may be directly / indirectly deduced from the information in the request; by regulatory requirements, for instance, the SF / SeMF 615 instance for emergency or lawful interface can be pre-configured.

[0127] In the steps 612b, 614b and 616, the LMF 610 may also direct the sensing request to the (serving) AMF 605 and cause the AMF 605 to select the SF / SeMF 615 instance. The selection criteria include all the criteria of option described above and following candidates: AMF 605 may use the target UE 625 context to select the SF / SeMF 615; the AMF 605 may query target UE 625 subscription for the selection of SF / SeMF 615.

[0128] At step 618, the sensing procedure may be initiated among sensing devices 630, NG-RAN 635, AMF 605, LMF 610, and SF / SeMF 615. At step 620, the SF / SeMF 615 may generate the location and determine the target UE 625 location. At step 622, SF / SeMF 615 may transmit Nsf_sensing response to the LMF 610. At step 624, SF / SeMF 615 may provide the sensing measurements to the LMF 610 and the LMF 610 may generate or determine the location of the target UE 625. At step 626, the LMF 610 may then transmit a location response related to location of the target UE 625 to AMF 605.

[0129] FIG. 7 illustrates range-angle map for a sensing scenario containing three target UEs associated with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated in the experimental charts 700, subplots 702, 704 and 706 correspond to three different time instances. In subplot 702, the IDs of every UEs are known. When the sensed targets UE2 and UE3 cross (in the middle subplot 704) , their IDs become unknown (in the subplot 706) . The “lost target” probing criterion is then fulfilled, which may trigger the legacy position for the lost targets only.

[0130] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of a method 800 implemented at a network device in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the first network device 110 with reference to FIG. 1A.

[0131] At block 802, the first network device 110 may determine whether to switch from positioning-based tracking of a terminal device to sensing-based tracking of the terminal device based on a first switching condition, or whether to switch from the sensing-based tracking to the positioning-based tracking based on a second switching condition.

[0132] At block 804, the first network device 110 may, based on determining to switch from the positioning-based tracking to the sensing-based tracking, transmit, to the terminal device, a first indication for suspending or stopping a positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking. At block 806, the first network device 110 may, based on determining to switch from the sensing-based tracking to the positioning-based tracking, transmit, to the terminal device, a second indication for resuming a first positioning session or starting a second positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking.

[0133] In some example embodiments, the positioning session is first positioning session, and the first network device 110 may determine whether the second switching condition is fulfilled; and based on determining that the second switching condition is fulfilled, transmit, to the terminal device, the second indication for resuming the first positioning session or starting the second positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking.

[0134] In some example embodiments, the second switching condition may comprise at least one of the following: an identifier of the terminal device needs to be obtained or refreshed with a periodicity or once; position tracking of the terminal device is lost or position information specific to the terminal device becomes unreliable; the sensing-based tracking is configured with a time offset for switching back to the positioning-based tracking; the  terminal device has a predefined mobility profile; collision avoidance related to the terminal device is to be performed; probing specific to a geographical area is to be performed; or the terminal device enters an area in which the sensing-based tracking is not allowed.

[0135] In some further example embodiments, the first network device 110 may determine a sensing configuration for a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking based on positioning information of the terminal device determined during the suspended positioning session.

[0136] In some other examples, the first network device 110 may transmit the sensing configuration to at least one second network device which is selected to perform the sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking; or transmit, to the at least one second network device, a muting indication for muting sensing signals from the at least one second network device to abort the sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking. The positioning information comprises at least one of the following: angular information; range information; velocity information; or Doppler information.

[0137] In some further examples, the first network device 110 may trigger sensing based positioning of the terminal device in the event that the first network device 110 is performing non-sensing based positioning of the terminal device. The first switching condition may comprises: in the event that a reliability assessment of a sensed position of the terminal device indicates that the sensed position is reliable, determining to switch from the positioning-based tracking to the sensing-based tracking; or in the event that the reliability assessment indicates that the sensed position is unreliable, determining not to switch from the positioning-based tracking to the sensing-based tracking; in the event that terminal device is in a low-activity state including RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE state where sensing doesn’ t require terminal device to switch to RRC CONNECTED mode; or in the event that terminal device is in power saving mode including CM IDLE state where sensing doesn’ t require terminal device to switch to CM CONNECTED mode.

[0138] In some example embodiments, the first network device may perform the reliability assessment by: determining a first positioning estimate of the terminal device based on non-sensing based positioning of the terminal device; determining a second positioning estimate of the terminal device based on sensing based positioning of the terminal device; and determining whether a difference between the first positioning estimate and the second positioning estimate is below a predefined threshold.

[0139] In some examples, the first network device 110 may perform the reliability assessment by: determining a first reliability level of a first positioning estimate of the terminal device based on non-sensing based positioning of the terminal device; determining a second reliability level of a second positioning estimate of the terminal device based on sensing based positioning of the terminal device; and performing the reliability assessment based on the first reliability level and the second reliability level.

[0140] In some example embodiments, at least one of (i) a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking, (ii) the second switching condition, or (iii) entering a positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking may, based on at least one of the following: a capability of the terminal device; or a power saving requirement. The positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking may be established based on a New Radio (NR) positioning procedure. The suspended positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking may be resumed with a partial or whole configuration from a previous positioning instance.

[0141] In some example embodiments, the first network device 110 may suspend the positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking by storing configuration information of a positioning method configured by the first network device 110 for the terminal device. The first network device 110 may receive a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration from a second network device in case of suspending the positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking; and activate or deactivate the SRS configuration based on a transition between the positioning-based tracking and the sensing-based tracking.

[0142] In some further embodiments, the first network device 110 may perform a location management function (LMF) and a sensing function (SF) , and the first network device 110 may determine to perform a sensing session associated with the positioning-based tracking, a positioning session associated with the positioning-based tracking, or a combination of the sensing session and the positioning session, such that at least one of the following: a target quality of service (QoS) of positioning of the terminal device is achieved; resource consumption is minimized; or multiple measurements by reusing multiple resources is combined.

[0143] In some further embodiments, the first network device 110 may perform a LMF, and the first network device 110 may, based on determining that the first switching condition is  fulfilled, transmit, to a network repository function (NRF) , a discovery request for discovering an SF, wherein the discovery request includes at least one selection criterion; receive, from the NRF, a discovery response indicating the SF selected based on the at least one selection criterion; and transmit, to the SF, a sensing request for requesting a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking.

[0144] The at least one selection criterion comprises at least one of the following: an applicable geographic area; an applicable location area; a target profile of the terminal device, wherein the terminal device operates as an active target or a passive target; an expected QoS of positioning of the terminal device; capability of sensing measurements from the terminal device and the SF; context of the discovery request; or a regulatory requirement.

[0145] In some examples, the first network device 110 may perform a LMF, and the first network device 110 may, based on determining that the first switching condition is fulfilled, transmit, to an access and mobility management function (AMF) , a sensing request for requesting a sensing session associated with the sensing-based tracking, such that the AMF transmits the sensing request to an SF selected by the AMF.
