Abstract
Description
[0001] Dispenser and dispensing system
[0002] FIELD
[0003] The present invention relates to a dispenser for dispensing material from one-component (1 K) and two-component (2K) capsules. Further, the present invention relates to a dispensing system comprising said dispenser.
[0004] BACKGROUND
[0005] Dispensers and dispensing systems exist in different forms and sizes. Furthermore, said dispensers and dispensing systems can be used in many different applications, like medical applications, dental applications, or industrial applications.
[0006] It is further known that specific dispensers and dispensing systems, especially in medical and dental applications, are used for dispensing material from one-component (1 K) capsules, and other specific, and especially different, dispensers and dispensing systems are used for dispensing material from two-component (2K) capsules. This often means that it is not possible to avoid the inconvenience of having several dispensers and dispensing devices, particularly with regard to the capsules to be used.
[0007] Accordingly, there is a need for dispensers and dispensing systems to improve an applicability concerning the usable capsules.
[0008] SUMMARY
[0009] The present disclosure provides a dispenser and a dispensing system according to the independent claims. Embodiments are given in the subclaims, the description and the drawings. In one aspect, the present invention is directed at a dispenser for dispensing material from one-component (1 K) capsules and two-component (2K) capsules. The dispenser according to the present invention comprises a main body with a first coupling section configured such that an 1 K capsule can be reversibly coupled thereto, and a second coupling section configured such that an 2K capsule can be reversibly coupled thereto, and a dispensing mechanism for selectively dispensing material from a 1 K capsule if coupled to the first coupling section or material from a 2K capsule if coupled to the second coupling section.
[0010] First of all, the dispenser according to the present invention comprises a main body. Preferably, said main body comprises an elongated shape so that it is easy to hold. Also, one or more gripping means such as grip plates or simply roughened surface areas can be provided on the surface of the main body for an enhancement of usability.
[0011] According to the present invention, the main body of the dispenser comprises two distinct and separate coupling sections, namely a first coupling section and a second coupling section. In particular, the first coupling section comprises the respective means for coupling to a 1 K capsule. Complementary to the first coupling section, the second coupling section comprises the respective means for coupling to a 2K capsule. This allows coupling capsules to the main body of the dispenser according to the present invention in three different variations: first a single capsule, namely a 1 K capsule, coupled to the first coupling section, second a single capsule, namely a 2K capsule, coupled to the second coupling section, third two capsules, namely both a 1 K and a 2K capsule, coupled to the first coupling section and the second coupling section, respectively.
[0012] Preferably, the respective capsules provide 1 K materials or 2K materials for medical or dental applications. In particular, the 1 K materials and also the 2K materials preferably are curable by light. Concerning the 2K materials, these can for instance also be dual-curable in the sense that they are chemically curable, but said chemical curing process can be triggered and / or enhanced and / or supported by additional light curing.
[0013] In particular, the coupling of the capsules to the respective coupling section is reversable, and hence exchangeable capsules can be used with the dispenser according to the present invention. Reversable in the sense of the present invention means that the respective coupling of the capsule to the coupling section locks and spatially fixes respective capsule on the main body, but allows nevertheless that the capsule is later on again removed, especially after use. In other words, the dispenser according to the present invention can be used over and over again with a plurality of capsules. In particular, the capsules can also be filled with different 1 K or 2K materials, respectively, depending on the current specific field of application of the dispenser.
[0014] Additionally to the coupling sections, the dispenser according to the present invention comprises a dispensing mechanism. Said dispensing mechanism is capable of actuating onto capsules coupled to the coupling sections such that material, in particular said 1 K or 2K material, respectively, provided by the respective capsule is dispensed.
[0015] In particular, the dispensing mechanism of the dispenser according to the present invention is capable of actuating on a specific one of the capsules coupled to the main body of the dispenser according to the present invention. Hence, if only a single capsule is coupled in one of the two coupling sections, dispensing material of said single capsule can easily be provided. However, even if capsules are coupled to both coupling sections, namely a 1 K capsule to the first coupling section and a 2K capsule to the second coupling section, with the dispensing mechanism of the dispenser according to the present invention it is possible to select which one of these two capsules should be used for dispensing material.
[0016] In summary, the dispenser according to the present invention is capable to be coupled to 1 K capsules and 2K capsules, whereby it if further capable of selectively dispensing material from a specific one of the coupled capsules. Changing the dispenser when switching from 1 K capsules to 2K capsules and vice versa can thereby be avoided. An applicability of the dispenser according to the present invention concerning the usable capsules can thereby be improved.
[0017] According to an embodiment, the first coupling section and / or the second coupling section is provided with mechanical keying means allowing only the coupling of capsules with matching keying means thereto. Such mechanical keying means can for instance comprise projections, ridges, recesses, grooves or other three-dimensional features on a surface of the respective coupling section facing and contacting the capsule to be coupled. By that, only capsules comprising matching geometrical three-dimensional features can be coupled to the respective coupling section. Preferably the respective mechanical keying means of the coupling section and the matching capsule form-fittingly interlock with each other. Mistakes when choosing the capsule to be used can thereby be avoided, which is for instance very important for medical or dental applications. Further, by providing mechanical keying means also a safe handling of the dispenser according to the present invention, especially coupling the right and desired capsule to the respective coupling section, can be also provided in environments with restricted visibility up to complete darkness.
[0018] According to an embodiment, the first coupling section and the second coupling section are provided each with a cap element, whereby the cap element mechanically blocks coupling a capsule to the respective coupling section if a capsule is coupled to the respective other coupling section. By that, an unwanted coupling of a second capsule to the respective other coupling section can be prohibited in an effective and especially easy way. It can be ensured that the dispensed material originates from the single capsule actually coupled to the dispenser. An accidental mix-up of dispensed material, which eventually is possible with two capsules coupled to a respective one of the two coupling sections of the dispenser, can be prohibited.
[0019] According to an improved embodiment, the respective cap element automatically blocks the respective coupling section when a capsule is coupled to the respective other coupling section. Automatically in the sense of the present invention includes in particular that the coupling process of the capsule to one of the coupling sections itself triggers the blocking of the respective other coupling section by the respective cap element. This can be provided by a mechanical link between the two coupling section such as for instance a Bowden cable, lever linkage, or a simple push rod or pull rod. Additionally, or alternatively, also an electronical connection between the two coupling sections can be provided, whereby a sensor element detects the coupling of a capsule to one of the coupling sections, and an actuator element accordingly actuates the cap element for blocking the respective other coupling section.
[0020] According to an embodiment, the dispensing mechanism comprises a first dispensing mechanism section for dispensing material from a 1 K capsule if coupled to the first coupling section, and a second dispensing mechanism section for dispensing material from a 2K capsule if coupled to the second coupling section. In other words, the dispensing mechanism comprises two separate and distinct dispensing mechanism sections, wherein one of said dispensing mechanism sections is specifically constructed for dispensing material from a 1 K capsule, and accordingly, the respective other one of said dispensing mechanism sections is specifically constructed for dispensing material from a 2K capsule. Differences in the dispensing processes from 1 K capsules and 2K capsules can thereby be easily met. In particular, as 1 K capsules are coupled to the first coupling section, it might be of advantage to position the first dispensing mechanism section in the vicinity or at least towards the first coupling section, and vice versa to position the second dispensing mechanism section in the vicinity or at least towards the second coupling section. Unnecessarily long mechanical transmission paths within the dispenser according to the present invention can thereby be avoided.
[0021] According to an alternative embodiment, the dispensing mechanism comprises a combined dispensing mechanism section for selectively dispensing material from a 1 K capsule if coupled to the first coupling section and material from a 2K capsule if coupled to the second coupling section. In contrast to the embodiment described in the last paragraph, the dispensing mechanism can alternatively comprise a combined dispensing mechanism which is capable of selectively dispensing material from both, a 1 K capsule coupled to the first coupling section, and a 2K capsule coupled to the second coupling section. Said combined dispensing mechanism section is connected to both coupling sections for dispensing material from a capsule coupled to the respective coupling section, and can be arranged in between, preferably in the middle of a distance between, the two coupling sections. As only a single combined dispensing mechanism section is present, this embodiment allows constructing the entire dispenser with a smaller size.
[0022] According to an embodiment, the dispenser comprises a first activation button for initiating the dispensing of material from the 1 K capsule if coupled to the first coupling section and a second activation button for initiating the dispensing of material form the 2K capsule if coupled to the second coupling section. Providing two separate activation buttons provides for the user of the dispenser according to the present invention an especially easy and obvious way of selecting the respective capsule, of which material should be dispensed. This is in particular independent, whether a respective capsule is coupled to only to one or to both of the coupling sections.
[0023] According to an alternative embodiment, the dispenser comprises a common activation button for initiating the dispensing of material from either the 1 K capsule if coupled to the first coupling section or the 2K capsule if coupled to the second coupling section, wherein the dispenser further comprises a selection switch for selecting the respective capsule to be used during dispensing the material. In this embodiment, the user can always use the same activation button, namely the common activation button, for initiating dispensing the material from the desired capsule coupled to one of the coupling sections of the dispenser according to the present invention. It is therefore not necessary for the user to choose the respective activation button used for initiating the dispensing process. Thereby, the usage of the dispenser according to the present invention can be simplified. For the nevertheless desired selection of the used capsule, a dedicated selection switch is provided. Preferably, said selection switch comprises two switching states, wherein one of the switching states corresponds to a selection of the 1 K capsule, the respective other switching state to a selection of the 2K capsule.
[0024] According to an embodiment, the first coupling section and / or the second coupling section is configured such that a LED module can be coupled thereto. Said configuration of the respective coupling section comprises the mechanical coupling of the LED module, but preferably also the electric and / or electronical coupling, for instance by providing a power socket and / or a connector for a control of the LED module. By providing the ability to alternatively coupling a LED module to one of the coupling sections of the dispenser according to the present invention, a dual use functionality can be provided. For instance, the LED module can be used for illuminating the area to which the material should be dispensed. Preferably, the LED module is configured for emitting curing light for polymerization of light-curing materials, in particular for dental applications. Hence, the user can use the dispenser according to the present invention for both, dispensing material and successively curing said material. The necessity of switching the respective tool used for said actions, namely dispensing and curing, can be avoided.
[0025] According to an embodiment, the dispenser comprises one or more electrical engines for driving the dispensing mechanism, and wherein the dispenser further comprises one or more batteries for supplying energy to the one or more electrical engines and / or to a LED module if coupled to the first coupling section or the second coupling section. Preferably, the one or more batteries are arranged in an accessible compartment of the dispenser for an exchange of said one or more batteries.
[0026] Using electrical engines powered by internal batteries for driving the dispensing mechanism is very convenient for the user of the dispenser according to the present invention, since on the one hand no mechanical force has to be generated or provided by the user himself for the dispensing process. A precise positioning of the dispenser, which is very important for instance in medical or dental applications, can thereby be supported. On the other hand, the dispenser according to the invention can be provided without power cable, which is very convenient. Further, if a LED module is coupled to one of the coupling sections, providing the electrical power needed for the LED module by an internal battery of the dispenser allows using LED modules without an internal power source. Hence, said LED modules can be constructed smaller and less heavy, again supporting a precise positioning of the dispenser according to the present invention by the user.
[0027] According to an embodiment, the one or more batteries are rechargeable batteries or accumulators. After all stored electrical energy is used, the batteries or accumulators can be recharged and hence reused. This can improve the environmental friendliness of the dispenser according to the invention. Preferably, the dispenser according to the present invention itself comprises recharge means for recharging the batteries or accumulators, including for instance the necessary internal and external connectors, wiring and circuits. This allows in particular that the rechargeable batteries or accumulators can be provided integrated in the main body. As no accessibility to the battery or accumulator has to be provided, a more compact design of the dispenser according to the present invention can be provided.
[0028] According to an embodiment, the main body comprises a pen-like overall shape, wherein the first coupling section and the second coupling section are positioned opposite to each other along a longitudinal axis of the main body. By providing the main body with a pen-like overall shape, the handling of the dispenser according to the present invention during dispensing material and, if applicable, light-curing the dispensed material by the user can be improved and simplified. In particular, the dispenser according to the present invention with such a pen-like overall shape can be intuitively used like a pen. In particular, as the two coupling sections are arranged on two opposite ends of the main body, the pen-like appearance of the dispenser according to the present invention, and all advantages linked to this specific shape, is enhanced further.
[0029] According to an embodiment, the main body comprises at least along a section of its longitudinal axis a round, oval, rounded triangular or rounded polygonal cross- sectional shape. All of these shapes have in common an absence of sharp edges. Manual handling the dispenser according to the present invention can thereby be improved and rendered more convenient.
[0030] In another aspect, the present disclosure is directed at a dispensing system. The dispensing system according to the present invention comprises the dispenser in accordance with at least one of the preceding embodiments, and a 1 K capsule configured to be coupled to the first coupling section and / or a 2K capsule configured to be coupled to the second coupling section. In this embodiment, the 1 K capsule and / or the 2K capsule are coupled to the respective coupling section of the main body of the dispenser according to the present invention. For the capsules, either single-use capsules or multi-use capsules can be used.
[0031] The dispensing system according to the present invention comprises a dispenser according to the present invention. All advantages described above with respect to different embodiments of the dispenser according to the present invention can also be provided by the dispensing system according to the present invention comprising the respective embodiment of the dispenser according to the present invention.
[0032] According to an embodiment, the 1 K capsule and / or the 2K capsule provide material for medical / dental applications. Said materials can for instance comprise drugs, and / or are filling materials for cavities, in particular dental cavities.
[0033] According to an embodiment, the dispensing system comprises a 1 K capsule configured to be coupled to the first coupling section, and a 2K capsule configured to be coupled to the second coupling section. In this embodiment, to both coupling sections, namely the first coupling section and the second coupling section, of the main body of the dispenser, respective capsules are coupled. Switching between dispensing the respective materials of these two capsules can thereby be simplified, as the same tool, namely the same dispensing system according to the present invention, can be used for both dispensing processes.
[0034] According to an embodiment, the dispensing system comprises a LED module configured to be coupled to the first coupling section and / or the second coupling section. By providing a LED module with the capability to be coupled to one of the coupling sections of the dispenser, a dual use functionality of the dispensing sys- tem can be provided, if the LED module is actually coupled to the respective coupling section. For instance, the LED module can be used for illuminating the area to which the material should be dispensed. However, the LED module is preferably configured for emitting curing light for curing of light-curing materials. Hence, the user can use the dispensing system according to the present invention for both, dispensing material and successively curing said material. The necessity of switching the respective tool used for said actions can be avoided.
[0035] According to an enhanced embodiment, the LED module is configured for emitting curing light for polymerization of light-curing dental materials. Said light-curing dental materials are often used for filling dental cavities. In addition, said materials can be provided as 1 K material, which is often cured solely by the curing light provided by the LED module, or alternatively as 2K material, whereby the curing of such 2K materials is often a dual-cure process in the sense that both, chemical curing and curing by impinging curing light, is used at the same time.
[0036] According to an embodiment, the LED module comprises a LED lightening tip extending from a base section of the LED module, wherein the base section is configured to be coupled to the first coupling section and / or the second coupling section. The actual light emitting diode of the LED module can be arranged at the upper end of the LED lightening tip opposite to the base section. Alternatively, the LED lightening tip comprises a light guide for providing the light of the LED at said upper end. Preferably, said lightening tip comprises a small cross section throughout its longitudinal extension, or at least tapers from a wide cross section near to the base section to a small cross section near the upper end of the LED lightening tip. Small areas and / or volumes can thereby be reached for the application of the light of the LED module. Further preferably, the LED lightening tip is flexible at least partly, for further enhancing the areas and / or volumes reachable by the light of the LED module. According to an enhanced embodiment, the LED module comprises a partially translucent shielding element which is arranged on the base section and extends over a surface perpendicular to a longitudinal extension of the LED module. Preferably, the translucency of the shielding element is adapted to the light provided by the LED module, for instance in the sense that it comprises low translucency especially for the wavelength of the light provided by the LED module, and a respective higher translucency for light of other wavelengths. Light provided by the LED module might be hazardous, in particular for the user of the dispensing system itself, especially concerning the eyes said user. By providing said shielding element, a direct view through the shielding element to the area and / or volume illuminated by the light of the LED module is possible, but a danger of harm caused by the light, in particular by reflected light, can be lowered.
[0037] According to an embodiment, the first coupling section and the second coupling section are configured such that only a 1 K capsule or a LED module can be coupled to the first coupling section and that only a 2K capsule or a LED module can be coupled to the second coupling section. In other words, if a capsule is coupled to the first coupling section, it is ensured that it is a 1 K capsule, and vice versa, if a capsule is coupled to the second coupling section, it is ensured that it is a 2K capsule. Mix-ups between 1 K capsules and 2K capsules can thereby be avoided.
[0038] According to an embodiment, the 1 K capsule and / or the 2K capsule comprise at least one mixing and / or swirling element provided therein. With respect to a 1 K capsule, said mixing and / or swirling element provides a high smoothness of the dispensed material, preferably without any local fluctuations for instance concerning density. Additionally to that, with respect to 2K capsules, said mixing and / or swirling elements also provide a uniform mixing of the two material components originally provided within the 2K capsule.
