[0046] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as new radio (NR) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , narrow band Internet of things (NB-IoT) and so on.

[0047] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. The network device may also refer to network entities, network functions (NFs) or sensing functions (SFs) in a core network.

[0048] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0049] As discussed above, several communication standard organizations have discussed the sensing functionality. The requirements of sensing include per-object sensing  requirements and per-area sensing requirements. Per-area sensing is mainly used to sense a target object in a specific geographical location area, while per-object sensing is mainly used to sense a single target object or even to continuously track the object. As for the per-object sensing, the network device may select some adjacent UEs around the target object to be sounders or sensors for assisting sensing of the target object.

[0050] However, the network device may not well know the real-time location information of each adjacent UEs of the target object since the radio resource control (RRC) states and related positioning capability of adjacent UEs are different, selecting the adjacent UEs to assist sensing by the network device may not be the optimal manner. For example, there may be some blocking between the network device and the target object or the moving speed of the target object is too fast that leads to frequent handover. Besides, not all UEs around the target are in the RRC connected state under which the network device can know the UE’s exact location in real time. For the UE (s) under the RRC idle state and RRC inactive state, the network device may need to page them to enter the RRC connected state for sensing assisting selection, configure sensing configuration to those selected UEs and then collect sensing results from them. However, this will bring significant signalling load to the air interface. In view of the above, the network device may not select the most suitable adjacent UEs to assist sensing of the target object.

[0051] Therefore, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions for supporting target object requesting searching for adjacent UEs for sensing. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a first terminal device (also referred to as the target object, e.g., a UE) receives from a network device or generates a first indication indicating to search for at least one candidate terminal device for sensing. Then, the first terminal device transmits, to at least one second terminal device (e.g., a UE adjacent to the target object) , a first request for searching for the at least one candidate terminal device.

[0052] It is understood that the above procedure steps may work together, in a flow of operations as described below, partly together or independently of each other. By implementing the embodiments of the present disclosure, the target object could request the sensing search by sending a first request to the adjacent UEs, which will not be influenced by the blocking between the network device and the target object or the RRC states of the adjacent UEs, thereby achieving fast and efficient sensing-capable adjacent UE selection. Furthermore, it could expand the number of potential adjacent UEs participating in the sensing procedure, thereby facilitating discovering the most suitable adjacent UEs for sensing the target object and improving sensing result accuracy as well as the robustness.

[0053] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure of supporting target object requesting searching for adjacent UEs for sensing will be described below with reference to FIG. 1 through FIG. 9.

[0054] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of an application scenario 100 in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The network environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a first terminal device 110-1, a second terminal device 110-2, and a network device 120. For example, the network environment 100 may apply for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flight trajectory tracing scenario or a smart transportation scenario.

[0055] As illustrated in FIG. 1, the first terminal device 110-1 may also be referred to as a user equipment 110-1 or a UE 110-1. The second terminal device 110-2 (e.g., a terminal device adjacent to the target object) may also be referred to as a user equipment 110-2 or a UE 110-2. The network device 120 may also be referred to as a gNB 120, an AF 120 or a SF 120. The network device 120 may communicate with the first terminal device 110-1 and the second terminal device 110-2. The first terminal device 110-1 may directly communicate with the second terminal device 110-2. The first terminal device 110-1 may be a target object to be sensed and the second terminal device 110-2 may be an adjacent terminal device which could help the sensing of the target object.

[0056] FIG. 2 illustrates an example signaling process 200 in which a target object requests searching for adjacent terminal devices for sensing in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0057] As shown in FIG. 2, the first terminal device (e.g., the UE) 110-1 may receive from a network device 120 or generate 210 a first indication indicating to search for at least one candidate terminal device for sensing. Then, the first terminal device 110-1 may transmit 215, to at least one second terminal device 110-2, a first request for searching for the at least one candidate terminal device. When the second terminal device 110-2 receives the first request, it will know the first terminal device 110-1 is searching for candidate sensing-capable terminal devices. Then, the second terminal device 110-2 may determine 220 whether to respond to the first request. Afterwards, the first terminal device 110-1, the second terminal device 110-2 and the network device 120 may conduct the operations in at least one of Case 1 to Case 3.

[0058] In some example embodiments, the first indication may be triggered based on a reception of initial sensing configuration information at the first terminal device 110-1 from  the network device 120. Alternatively or additionally, the first indication may be triggered based on the first terminal device 110-1 moves from one cell to another cell. As such, once the first terminal device 110-1 moves from one cell to another cell, the first terminal device 110-1 may start searching for the candidate sensing-capable UEs and send the adjacent UE list to the network. Alternatively or additionally, the first indication may be triggered based on sensing configuration information of the first terminal device 110-1 updates. Alternatively or additionally, the first indication may be triggered based on a timer for sensing the first terminal device 110-1 expires. As such, once timer for sensing expires, the first terminal device 110-1 may start searching for the candidate sensing-capable UEs and send the adjacent UE list to the network. In view of the above, the target object could be triggered to send the first request for searching for adjacent UEs by a variety of events.

[0059] In some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may have a RRC connection with the network device 120. The first terminal device 110-1 may be under the RRC connected state. Alternatively, the first terminal device 110-1 may have a non-access stratum (NAS) connection with the network device 120.

[0060] In some example embodiments, the first request may comprise a reference signal (RS) for searching for or detecting the at least one candidate terminal device for sensing. The RS may be at least one of a detecting RS, a discovery RS or a sensing RS. In such embodiments, when the first terminal device 110-1 has requirements to be sensed, the first terminal device 110-1 will send the RS so as to search for adjacent candidate sensing-capable UEs. Alternatively or additionally, the first request may comprise a solicitation message indicating searching for the at least one candidate terminal device for sensing. The solicitation message may be a message in a direct discovery process under Model B. Alternatively or additionally, the first request may comprise an announce message indicating searching for the at least one candidate terminal device for sensing. The announce message may be a message in a direct discovery process under Model A.

[0061] In some example embodiments, the RS may be transmitted based on at least one parameter. The at least one parameter may comprise one or more time and frequency resources for the RS. The resources may be sidelink PC5 resources or any other resources allowed for sidelink communication. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one parameter may comprise a sequence for the RS. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one parameter may comprise a power control parameter for the RS. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one parameter may comprise one or more resources for sidelink communication.

[0062] In some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may determine the at least one parameter for the RS. In such embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 determines the at least one parameter by itself. Alternatively or additionally, before transmitting the first request, the first terminal device 110-1 may transmit, to the network device 120, a second request for the at least one parameter for the RS, and then receive, from the network device 120, the at least one parameter. In such embodiments, the at least one parameter is configured by the network device 120 in response to the request of the first terminal device 110-1. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one parameter may be preconfigured by the network device 120. In this scenario, the first terminal device 110-1 may firstly send a sensing request to the network device 120 and then directly start the sensing search based on the preconfigured parameter (s) .

[0063] In some example embodiments, the RS may be a detecting RS. Alternatively or additionally, the RS may be a discovery RS. Alternatively or additionally, the RS may be a sensing RS.

[0064] In some example embodiments, the RS may indicate a first list of candidate terminal devices. In such embodiments, when the first terminal device 110-1 transmits the RS, it may just transmit the RS to the first list of candidate terminal devices indicated by the RS. In some example embodiments, the first list of candidate terminal devices may comprise a list of candidate terminal devices configured by the network device 120.

[0065] Regarding Case 1, in some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may receive 230a, from the at least one second terminal device 110-2, at least one response message for sensing. Then, the first terminal device 110-1 may determine 240a the at least one candidate terminal device based on the at least one response message. In such embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 acts as the decision maker for the sensing-capable adjacent UE selection. In other words, the first terminal device 110-1 selects suitable candidate terminal devices.

[0066] In some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may receive, from a network device 120, a second list of candidate terminal devices. Then, the first terminal device 110-1 may determine the at least one candidate terminal device based on the at least one response message and the second list of candidate terminal devices. In such embodiments, the network device 120 transmits the candidate terminal devices discovered by the network device 120 to the first terminal device 110-1 as reference for the sensing-capable adjacent UE selection, which would be helpful for discovering the most suitable adjacent UEs of the first terminal device 110-1.

[0067] In some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may determine the at least one candidate terminal device based on a time order of the at least one response message. For example, the second terminal device 110-2 which has an early time order may be determined / selected as the candidate terminal device for sensing. Alternatively or additionally, the first terminal device 110-1 may determine the at least one candidate terminal device based on a reference signal receiving power (RSRP) comprised in each response message. For example, the second terminal device 110-2 which has a high RSRP may be determined / selected as the candidate terminal device for sensing. Alternatively or additionally, the first terminal device 110-1 may determine the at least one candidate terminal device based on at least one serving public land mobile network (PLMN) identification of the at least one candidate terminal device.

[0068] In some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may transmit sensing configuration information to the at least one candidate terminal device. Then, the second terminal device 110-2 may conduct sensing based on the received sensing configuration information. The sensing configuration information may be generated by the first terminal device 110-1 or received by the first terminal device 110-1 from the network device 120. In some embodiments, the sensing configuration information may be carried in the same message for transmitting the first indication from the network device 120. Alternatively, the sensing configuration information may be received by the first terminal device 110-1 from the network device via a message different from that for transmitting the first indication from the network device 120. In some embodiments, the message for transmitting the first indication from the network device 120 may be a RRC message, a NAS message or a sensing request.

[0069] In some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may transmit, to the network device 120, a third list of the at least one candidate terminal device. In this way, the first terminal device 110-1 could report the selection result of the sensing-capable adjacent UE to the network device 120.

[0070] Regarding Case 2, in some example embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 may receive 230c, from the at least one second terminal device 110-2, at least one response message for sensing. Then, the first terminal device 110-1 may transmit 235c, to a network device 120, information of the at least one response message. Then, the network device 120 may determine 240c the at least one candidate terminal device based on the at least one response message. In such embodiments, the first terminal device 110-1 directly collects the response of the second terminal device 110-2 and forwards it to the network device 120, and  the network device 120 acts as the decision maker for the sensing-capable adjacent UE selection. In other words, the network device 120 selects suitable candidate terminal devices.

[0071] In some example embodiments, each response message may comprise an identification of a second terminal device 110-2. Alternatively or additionally, each response message may comprise sensing capability information of the second terminal device 110-2. Alternatively or additionally, each response message may comprise a PLMN identification of the second terminal device 110-2.

[0072] In some example embodiments, the search for the at least one candidate terminal device may be based on sidelink communication between the first terminal device 110-1 and the at least one second terminal device 110-2. Alternatively, the search for the at least one candidate terminal device may be based on Bluetooth communication between the first terminal device 110-1 and the at least one second terminal device 110-2. Alternatively, the search for the at least one candidate terminal device may be based on Wi-Fi communication between the first terminal device 110-1 and the at least one second terminal device 110-2.

[0073] In some example embodiments, in response to the second terminal device 110-2 is determined as a candidate terminal device for sensing, the second terminal device 110-2 may transmit, to the network device 120 directly or via the first terminal device 110-1, an indication indicating that a sensing procedure for the first terminal device 110-1 starts. In some example embodiments, the second terminal device 110-2 may transmit the indication when it is in the RRC connected state. In some example embodiments, the second terminal device 110-2 may receive sensing configuration information from the first terminal device 110-1, wherein the sensing configuration information may be generated by the first terminal device 110-1 or received by the first terminal device 110-1 from the network device 120.

[0074] In some example embodiments, before transmitting the first request, the first terminal device 110-1 may transmit, to the network device 120, a second indication indicating the first terminal device 110-1 is capable of searching for the at least one candidate terminal device for sensing. For example, the indication may indicate the first terminal device 110-1 has NR communication and / or sidelink capabilities. Then, in response to the indication, the network device 120 may transmit, to the first terminal device 110-1, the first indication indicating to search for the at least one candidate terminal device.

[0075] In some example embodiments, the network device 120 may comprise a Node B, an application function (AF) or a network function (SF) .

[0076] By implementing the above embodiments described with reference to FIG. 2, target object requesting searching for adjacent UEs for sensing could be supported. With the above  embodiments as described above, the target object could request the sensing search by sending a first request to the adjacent UEs, which could achieve fast and efficient sensing-capable adjacent UE selection. Furthermore, it could expand the number of potential adjacent UEs participating in the sensing procedure, thereby facilitating discovering the most suitable adjacent UEs for sensing the target object and improving sensing result accuracy as well as the robustness. For example, for the scenario of the UAV flight trajectory tracing scenario or the smart transportation scenario, the target object may request for sensing assisting for high-precision and dynamic map service to support automatic driving or aided-driving.

[0077] FIG. 3A illustrates an example signaling process 300A in which a target object (e.g., UE1 110-1) requests searching for adjacent terminal devices for sensing during the direct discovery process in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that the process 300A may be considered as an embodiment or a more specific example of the process 200 as shown in FIG. 2. For ease of understanding, the process 300A will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0078] As shown in FIG. 3A, UE1 110-1 may refer to the first terminal device 110-1 in FIG. 2, and UE2 110-2a, UE3 110-2b and UE4 110-2c may refer to the second terminal device 110-2 in FIG. 2. UE2 110-2a, UE3 110-2b and UE4 110-2c may be adjacent to UE1 110-1 and be used for assisting sensing of the UE1 110-1. In other words, UE2 110-2a, UE3 110-2b and UE4 110-2c may be potential candidate UEs for sensing of the UE1 110-1.

[0079] At 315a, the first terminal device (e.g., the UE1) 110-1 may transmit, to at least one second terminal device (e.g., the UE2 110-2a, UE3 110-2b and UE4 110-2c) a solicitation message with the reason of sensing, which indicates searching for at least one candidate terminal device for sensing.

[0080] Then, the UE2 110-2a may have sensing capability and expect to participate in the sensing procedure. At 320a, the UE2 110-2a may transmit 320a, to the UE1 110-1, a response message if the UE2 110-2a supports sensing. The response message may contain at least one of an identification (ID) of the UE2 110-2a, sensing capability information of the UE2 110-2a or a PLMN identification of the UE2 110-2a.

[0081] Similarly, the UE3 110-2b may also have sensing capability and expect to participate in the sensing procedure. At 320b, the UE3 110-2b may transmit 320b, to the UE1 110-1, a response message if the UE3 110-2b supports sensing. The response message may contain at least one of an ID of the UE3 110-2b, sensing capability information of the UE3 110-2b or a PLMN identification of the UE3 110-2b.

[0082] Similarly, the UE4 110-2c may also have sensing capability and expect to participate in the sensing procedure. At 320c, the UE4 110-2c may transmit 320c, to the UE1 110-1, a response message if the UE4 110-2c supports sensing. The response message may contain at least one of an ID of the UE4 110-2c, sensing capability information of the UE4 110-2c or a PLMN identification of the UE4 110-2c.

[0083] At 330, the UE1 110-1 may determine at least one candidate terminal device based on the at least one response message from UE2 110-2a, UE3 110-2b and UE4 110-2c.

[0084] By implementing the above embodiments described with reference to FIG. 3A, the first terminal device 110-1 could utilize a sidelink direct discovery process under Model B to search for at least one candidate UE for sensing.

[0085] FIG. 3B illustrates an example signaling process 300B in which a target object requests searching for adjacent terminal devices for sensing during a direct discovery process in accordance with some other example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0086] It is noted that the process 300B may be considered as an embodiment or a more specific example of the process 200 as shown in FIG. 2. For ease of understanding, the process 300B will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0087] At 315b, the first terminal device (e.g., the UE1) 110-1 may transmit, to at least one second terminal device (e.g., the UE2 110-2a, UE3 110-2b and UE4 110-2c) an announcement message with the reason of sensing, which indicates searching for at least one candidate terminal device for sensing. The following operations in FIG. 3B may be same as 320a to 330 in FIG. 3A.

[0088] By implementing the above embodiments described with reference to FIG. 3B, the first terminal device 110-1 may also utilize another kind of sidelink direct discovery process under Model A to search for at least one candidate UE for sensing.

[0089] FIG. 4A illustrates an example signaling process 400A in which a target object (e.g., UE1 110-1) self-triggers a sensing request for searching for adjacent terminal devices for sensing in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the method 400A will be described with reference to FIG. 1, FIG. 3A and FIG. 3B.
