[0044] The idler gear assembly 112 also includes the thrust bearing 222 (e.g., bearing plate, etc. ) . As is described in more detail herein, the thrust bearing 222 is positioned between the coupling plate 208 and the cylinder block 104 and between the sleeve 202 and the cylinder block 104, and the thrust bearing 222 is configured to facilitate coupling of the idler gear assembly 112 to the cylinder block 104 and rotation of the idler gear 114 relative to the cylinder block 104. The thrust bearing 222 defines a plurality of thrust bearing apertures 224 (e.g., holes, etc. ) . Each of the thrust bearing apertures 224 extends through the thrust bearing 222.

[0045] The idler gear assembly 112 also includes the dowel 226 (e.g., pin, etc. ) . As is explained in more detail herein, the dowel 226 is coupled to the coupling plate 208 and functions to couple the thrust bearing 222 to the coupling plate 208 and the sleeve 202, and therefore the idler gear 114. It should be understood that the dowel 226 can be formed from a wide variety of materials and is not limited to a particular material or type of material. The dowel 226 includes a dowel head 228. The dowel head 228 is received in a dowel head aperture 230 (e.g., hole, etc. ) in the cylinder block 104.

[0046] The cylinder block 104 is configured such that the cylinder block apertures 220 are arranged around the dowel head aperture 230. For example, the cylinder block apertures 220 are disposed in a circular pattern (e.g., a circular row, a plurality of circular rows, etc. ) around the dowel head aperture 230, in various embodiments.

[0047] The dowel 226 also includes the dowel pin 232. The dowel pin 232 is contiguous with the dowel head 228 and extends from the dowel head 228. The dowel pin 232 has a first diameter and the dowel head 228 has a second diameter that is greater than the first diameter. The dowel head 228 is retained between the thrust bearing 222 and the cylinder block 103.

[0048] The dowel 226 has two different diameter portions, the dowel head 228 and the dowel pin 232. Thus, the dowel 226 has a cross-section with a shape that is similar to a capital (uppercase) T, for example. Specifically, when viewed in cross-section, a first portion of the dowel 226 intersects a second portion of the dowel 226 at a midpoint of the second portion and such that the first portion is orthogonal (or substantially orthogonal) to and longer than the second portion. This shape is provided by the dowel head 228 having a larger diameter than the dowel pin 232. The dowel head 232 serves a different function than the dowel pin 232. Specifically, the dowel head 228 is for location of the idler gear assembly 112 relative to the cylinder block 104, and the dowel pin 232 is for coupling of the thrust bearing 222 to the insert portion 210, and therefore to the idler gear 114. The coupling provided by the dowel pin 232 enables preassembly before coupling to the cylinder block 104, which simplifies installation and is desirable.

[0049] The thrust bearing 222 defines a thrust bearing pin aperture 234 (e.g., hole, etc. ) . The dowel pin 232 is received within the thrust bearing pin aperture 234. A diameter of the thrust bearing pin aperture 234 is smaller than a diameter of the dowel head 228.

[0050] The thrust bearing 222 is configured such that the thrust bearing apertures 224 are arranged around the thrust bearing pin aperture 234. For example, the thrust bearing apertures 224 are disposed in a circular pattern around the thrust bearing pin aperture 234, in various embodiments.

[0051] The coupling plate 208 also defines a coupling plate pin aperture 236 (e.g., hole, etc. ) . The dowel pin 232 is received within the coupling plate pin aperture 236. In various embodiments, the dowel pin 232 extends within only a portion of the coupling plate pin aperture 236. The coupling plate pin aperture 236 extends through the insert portion 210 and the flange portion 212. The dowel pin 232 extends through the coupling plate pin aperture 236. A diameter of the coupling plate pin aperture 236 is smaller than a diameter of the dowel head 228. The flange portion 212 is in confronting relation with at least one of the sleeve 202 or the idler gear 114.

[0052] Additionally, the coupling plate pin aperture 236 enables insertion of a tool (e.g., punch, etc. ) through the flange portion 212 to press the dowel pin 232 out of the coupling plate 208. In this way, the dowel 226 may be removed from the coupling plate 208 (e.g., during tear-down, etc. ) .

[0053] The coupling plate 208 is configured such that the coupling plate apertures 214 are arranged around the coupling plate pin aperture 236. For example, the coupling plate apertures 214 are disposed in a circular pattern (e.g., a circular row, a plurality of circular rows, etc. ) around the coupling plate pin aperture 236, in various embodiments.

[0054] Use of the dowel 226 enables elimination of other types of mechanisms, such as retaining rings, for retaining the thrust bearing 222. Use of retaining rings is undesirable because a retaining ring can become dislodged which can result in abnormal wear of the cylinder block 104.

[0055] In addition, use of the dowel 226 enables preassembly of the sleeve 202, the idler gear 114, and the coupling plate 208 prior to coupling of the idler gear assembly 112 to the cylinder block 104 using the block fasteners 218.

[0056] The coupling plate 208 also includes a lubricant supply aperture 240 (e.g., hole, etc. ) . In various embodiments, the lubricant supply aperture 240 is formed through the insert portion 210. The lubricant supply aperture 240 receives a lubricant provides the lubricant between the sleeve 202 and the coupling plate 208 (e.g., the insert portion 210, etc. ) .

[0057] In various embodiments, the thrust bearing 222 also includes a plurality of lubricant collectors 242 (e.g., grooves, etc. ) . The lubricant collectors 242 are circumferentially disposed along an axial face of the thrust bearing 222 and are each contiguous with a circumferential edge of the lubricant collectors 242. The lubricant collectors 242 are configured to collect and retain a lubricant (e.g., oil, etc. ) to facilitate rotation of the idler gear 114 relative to the cylinder block 104. In various embodiments, the lubricant collectors 242 are grooves on the axial face of the thrust bearing that each extend towards the thrust bearing pin aperture 234. Each of the lubricant collectors 242 is in confronting relation with at least one of the sleeve 202 or the idler gear 114.

[0058] FIG. 4 illustrates a method 400 of installing the idler gear assembly 112 in the internal combustion engine system 100. In block 402, the sleeve 202 is placed between a circumferential inner surface of the idler gear 114 and the insert portion 210. For example, where the sleeve 202 is a bushing, the sleeve 202 is press fit into the aperture defined by the circumferential inner surface of the idler gear 114. The sleeve 202 thus facilitates rotation of the idler gear 114 relative to the coupling plate 208.

[0059] In block 404, the dowel 226 is coupled to the thrust bearing 222. Specifically, the dowel pin 232 is inserted into the thrust bearing pin aperture 234.

[0060] Next, in block 406, the coupling plate 208 is coupled to the cylinder block 104. Specifically, the block fasteners 218 are inserted through the coupling plate apertures 214 and the thrust bearing apertures 224. Additionally, the dowel head 228 is aligned with and received in the dowel head aperture 230. Finally, the block fasteners 218 are tightened into the cylinder block apertures 220. The method 400 may include aligning one or more gears or  chains with the idler gear teeth 200. The method 400 may also include providing a lubricant to the idler gear assembly 112.

[0061] In various embodiments, the method 400 includes placing a sleeve 202 between a circumferential inner surface of an idler gear 114 and an insert portion 210 of a coupling plate 208. The method 400 also includes inserting a dowel pin 232 of a dowel 226 through a thrust bearing pin aperture 234 of a thrust bearing 222. The method 400 also includes inserting the dowel pin 232 through a thrust bearing pin aperture 234 after inserting the dowel pin 232 through the thrust bearing pin aperture 234.

[0062] While this specification contains many specific implementation details, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of what may be claimed but rather as descriptions of features specific to particular implementations. Certain features described in this specification in the context of separate implementations can also be implemented in combination in a single implementation. Conversely, various features described in the context of a single implementation can also be implemented in multiple implementations separately or in any suitable subcombination. Moreover, although features may be described as acting in certain combinations and even initially claimed as such, one or more features from a claimed combination can, in some cases, be excised from the combination, and the claimed combination may be directed to a subcombination or variation of a subcombination.

[0063] As utilized herein, the terms “substantially, ” “generally, ” and similar terms are intended to have a broad meaning in harmony with the common and accepted usage by those of ordinary skill in the art to which the subject matter of this disclosure pertains. It should be understood by those of skill in the art who review this disclosure that these terms are intended to allow a description of certain features described and claimed without restricting the scope of these features to the precise numerical ranges provided. Accordingly, these terms should be interpreted as indicating that insubstantial or inconsequential modifications or alterations of the subject matter described and claimed are considered to be within the scope of the appended claims.

[0064] The term “coupled” and the like, as used herein, mean the joining of two components directly or indirectly to one another. Such joining may be stationary (e.g., permanent) or  moveable (e.g., removable or releasable) . Such joining may be achieved with the two components or the two components and any additional intermediate components being integrally formed as a single unitary body with one another, with the two components, or with the two components and any additional intermediate components being attached to one another.

[0065] It is important to note that the construction and arrangement of the various systems shown in the various example implementations is illustrative only and not restrictive in character. All changes and modifications that come within the spirit and / or scope of the described implementations are desired to be protected. It should be understood that some features may not be necessary, and implementations lacking the various features may be contemplated as within the scope of the disclosure, the scope being defined by the claims that follow. When the language “aportion” is used, the item can include a portion and / or the entire item unless specifically stated to the contrary.

[0066] References herein to the positions of elements (e.g., “top, ” “bottom, ” “above, ” “below, ” “left, ” “right” ) are merely used to describe the orientation of various elements in the FIGURES. It should be noted that the orientation of various elements may differ according to other exemplary embodiments, and that such variations are intended to be encompassed by the present disclosure.

[0067] Also, the term “or” is used, in the context of a list of elements, in its inclusive sense (and not in its exclusive sense) so that when used to connect a list of elements, the term “or” means one, some, or all of the elements in the list. Conjunctive language such as the phrase “at least one of X, Y, and Z, ” unless specifically stated otherwise, is otherwise understood with the context as used in general to convey that an item, term, etc. may be either X, Y, Z, X and Y, X and Z, Y and Z, or X, Y, and Z (i.e., any combination of X, Y, and Z) . Thus, such conjunctive language is not generally intended to imply that certain embodiments require at least one of X, at least one of Y, and at least one of Z to each be present, unless otherwise indicated.
