Description

METHODS OF REFINING LIQUID OIL AND CONTROLLING P-ANISIDINE VALUEFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to a method of refining liquid oil, and in particular relates to controlling P‐anisidine value during the refining process.BACKGROUND

[0002] The quality and safety of food has received widespread attention. Liquid oil such as sunflower oil contains a large amount of unsaturated fatty acids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids which are more prone to oxidation. P‐anisidine value is a secondary product of oil oxidation, reflecting the degree of oil oxidation. The existing bleaching methods for refining liquid oil can cause P‐anisidine value to increase significantly, which means that the existing bleaching methods lead to a higher extent of the oil oxidation.

[0003] Therefore, there are needs to develop a method of refining liquid oil in which the level of P‐anisidine value is controlled.SUMMARY

[0004] The present invention relates to a method of refining a liquid oil, comprising: contacting the liquid oil which has not been subjected to a previous bleaching step or a previous deodorizing step, with an adsorbent for bleaching, wherein the adsorbent comprises activated carbon, silica or a combination thereof, and wherein a first level of P‐anisidine value after the bleaching step is maintained to be no more than about 190%, or no more than about 170%, or no more than about 125%, of a second level of P‐anisidine value before the bleaching step.

[0005] The present invention relates to a method of controlling a first level of P‐anisidine value of a liquid oil after bleaching, comprising: contacting the liquid oil which has not been subjected to a previous bleach step or a previous deodorizing step, with an adsorbent for bleaching; and deodorizing the bleached oil with water vapor at a temperature of 220‐300℃ for 15 minutes‐1 hour, wherein the adsorbent comprises activated carbon, silica or a combination thereof, and wherein the first level of P‐anisidine value after the bleaching step is controlled to be a level of no more than about 190%, of a second level of P‐anisidine value before the bleaching step.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0063] EXAMPLES

[0064] The following examples are presented to further illustrate and explain the present invention and should not be taken as limiting in any regard.

[0065] Example 1

[0066] P‐anisidine value is determined in accordance with the method stated in “Animal and Vegetable Fats and Oils‐Determination of Anisidine Value. GB / T 24304‐2009 / ISO 6885: 2006, IDT” which was published by Chinese National Standards on September 30, 2009 and implemented on January 1, 2010.

[0067] The changes of P‐anisidine value of sunflower oil during refining process using white clay are listed in Table 1.

[0068] Table 1

[0069] It can be seen from Table 1 that during refining process, P‐anisidine value is significantly increased after bleaching, and P‐anisidine value is decreased after deodorizing.

[0070] Example 2

[0071] The sunflower oil has been degummed and neutralized in accordance with the method as shown in Figure 1. The changes of P‐anisidine value using different adsorbents for bleaching of the same neutralized sunflower oil are listed in Table 2.

[0072] Table 2

[0073] Activated carbon‐1 has different particle size from activated carbon‐2. When activated carbon‐1 is measured by 75μm sieve, around 4.4%of activated carbon‐1 does not go through the sieve and is left on the sieve as residue. When activated carbon‐2 is measured by 75μm sieve, around 37%of activated carbon‐2 does not go through the sieve and is left on the sieve as residue.

[0074] It can be seen from Table 2 that when 0.5wt%SiO2, 0.5wt%activated carbon‐1 or 0.5wt%activated carbon‐2 is used as the adsorbent for the bleaching, the level of the P‐anisidine value (i.e. the first level of the P‐anisidine value) after the bleaching can be maintained to be no more than 145%, 120%, and 160%, respectively, of the level of P‐anisidine value (i.e. the second level of the P‐anisidine value) before the bleaching (i.e. P‐anisidine value=2) . When 1wt%SiO2, 1wt%activated carbon‐1 or 1wt%activated carbon‐2 is used as the adsorbent for the bleaching, the level of the P‐anisidine value after the bleaching can be maintained to be no more than 115%, 125%, and 115%, respectively, of the level of P‐anisidine value before the bleaching.

[0075] However, when the adsorbents are others except for these three adsorbents, all of the levels of the P‐anisidine value after the bleaching are increased to more than 240%of the level of the P‐anisidine value before the bleaching. Therefore, activated carbon and silica are more effective than clay to control the level of the P‐anisidine.

[0076] Example 3

[0077] The canola oil has been degummed and neutralized in accordance with the method as shown in Figure 1. The changes of P‐anisidine value using different adsorbents for bleaching of the same neutralized canola oil are listed in Table 3.

[0078] Table 3

[0079] When 1wt%SiO2, 1wt%activated carbon‐1 or 1wt%activated carbon‐2 is used as the adsorbent for the bleaching, the level of the P‐anisidine value after the bleaching can be maintained to be no more than 166%, 138%, and 103%, respectively, of the level of P‐anisidine value before the bleaching.

[0080] However, when the adsorbents are others except for these three adsorbents, all of the levels of the P‐anisidine value after the bleaching are increased to more than 200%of the level of the P‐anisidine value before the bleaching. Therefore, activated carbon and silica are more effective than clay to control the level of the P‐anisidine.

[0081] Example 4

[0082] Deodorization process is conducted in accordance with the method as shown in Figure 2. Different deodorization conditions as shown in Table 4 are used to deodorize sunflower oil.

[0083] Table 4

[0084] It can be seen from Table 4 that when the temperature and time for deodorizing is the same (e.g. 216℃ for 30 minutes) , water vapor deodorization has a better effect than nitrogen deodorization in terms of controlling the level of P‐anisidine value. Table 4 also shows that a higher temperature for deodorizing has a better effect than a lower temperature in terms of controlling the level of P‐anisidine value.

[0085] Example 5

[0086] Bleached or refined sunflower oil is used in this Example for re‐bleaching. Activated carbon is used to re‐bleach the bleached or deodorized sunflower oil and the P‐anisidine value after the re‐bleaching is listed in Table 5.

[0087] Table 5

[0088] It can be seen from Table 5 that activated carbon can just help decrease P‐anisidine value a little from bleached or refined oil. Therefore, activated carbon cannot control the level of P‐anisidine value of the liquid oil that has already been subjected to a previous bleaching step or a previous deodorizing step.

[0089] Unless otherwise defined, all terms (including technical and scientific terms) used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which the embodiments of the invention belong. It will be further understood that terms, such as those defined in commonly used dictionaries, should be interpreted as having a meaning that is consistent with their meaning in the context of the relevant art and the present disclosure, and will not be interpreted in an idealized or overly formal sense unless expressly so defined herein.

[0090] While the disclosure has been described with reference to an exemplary embodiment, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the scope of the disclosure. In addition, many modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the disclosure without departing from the essential scope thereof. Therefore, it is intended that the disclosure not be  limited to the particular embodiment disclosed as the best mode contemplated for carrying out this disclosure, but that the disclosure will include all embodiments falling within the scope of the appended claims.
