Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices and methods of communication. In one aspect, upon reception of a configuration for enabling a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU, a terminal device may transmit, from a PDCP entity to lower layers, an indication to perform an operation comprising at least one of the following: stopping the retransmission of the RLC SDU; or applying a reduced retransmission number for the RLC SDU. In this way, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism may be carried out. Resource efficiency may be improved by avoiding unnecessary RLC AM retransmissions.

Description

DEVICES AND METHODS OF COMMUNICATIONTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of telecommunication, and in particular, to devices and methods of communication for radio link control (RLC) acknowledged mode (AM) retransmission.BACKGROUND

[0002] As known, some services such as extended reality (XR) services have strict latency requirements. Since any data which has exceeded a protocol data unit (PDU) delay budget (PDB)  / PDU set delay budget (PSDB) may not be useful, it is required to avoid sending these useless data to save radio resources.

[0003] RLC AM retransmission is typically used for services which require no packet loss but without stringent latency requirement. The characteristics of RLC AM retransmission is not negligible for typical XR services which have strict latency requirements and certain reliability requirements. To further enhance XR services, it is expected to make RLC retransmission related enhancements for RLC AM with small packet delay budget.SUMMARY

[0049] As shown in FIG. 1, the terminal device 110 may communicate with the network device 120 via a channel such as a wireless communication channel. The communications in the communication network 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, global system for mobile communications (GSM) , long term evolution (LTE) ,  LTE-evolution, LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , new radio (NR) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , code division multiple access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE radio access network (GERAN) , machine type communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0050] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a configuration for a retransmission of a RLC SDU (i.e., RLC AM retransmission) . In some embodiments, the configuration may comprise a retransmission number (may also referred to as a first retransmission number herein) for the RLC AM retransmission, e.g., a maximum retransmission number (may also referred to as a first maximum retransmission number herein, e.g., maxRetxThreshold) for the RLC AM retransmission. Based on the configuration, the terminal device 110 may perform RLC AM retransmission.

[0051] Typically, RLC AM is used for services which require no packet loss but without stringent latency requirement. This characteristic of RLC AM is not negligible for typical XR services which have strict latency requirements and certain reliability requirements.

[0052] Conventional RLC AM mechanism does not consider remaining delay budget of a packet, and never gives up retransmission until successful transmission is confirmed or RLF is triggered. Thus, the conventional RLC AM mechanism may cause inefficiency in handling retransmissions of data packets within the stringent delay requirements of XR applications, for example, unnecessary RLC AM retransmission when the remaining delay budget is almost exhausted. Remaining delay budget of a packet may keep updating, which may cause that number of RLC AM retransmissions does not fit or match the remaining delay budget.

[0053] In view of this, embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions of stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission. In these solutions, if a certain condition is met, the RLC AM retransmission may be stopped or a reduced retransmission number (e.g., a reduced maximum retransmission number) may be applied. In this way, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism may be achieved. Thus, unnecessary RLC AM  retransmissions may be avoided, and resource efficiency may be improved. Further, activation or deactivation of the RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism may be achieved, and thus a flexible network control on RLC AM retransmission may be attained. The solutions will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 2 to 7B below.

[0054] In the context of the present disclosure, the term “reduced retransmission number” herein may refer to a retransmission number different from the first retransmission number described above. The term “reduced maximum retransmission number” herein may refer to a newly defined maximum retransmission number compared to the first maximum retransmission number described above. The term “reduced retransmission number” herein may be interchangeably used with “second retransmission number” . The term “reduced maximum retransmission number” herein may be interchangeably used with “second maximum retransmission number” or “remaining retransmission number” .

[0055] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF RLC AM RETRANSMISSION MECHANISM

[0056] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 of communication for stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 2 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any suitable additional steps may be added.

[0057] As shown in FIG. 2, the network device 120 may transmit 210 a configuration for enabling a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU. In other words, the network device 120 may configure to the terminal device 110 a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit the configuration via a radio resource control (RRC) signaling.

[0058] In some embodiments, the configuration may comprise a field indicating a threshold for a remaining value of a discard timer for a PDCP SDU. In some embodiments, the field may indicate the threshold used to determine whether to indicate lower layer (e.g., RLC layer) to stop RLC AM retransmission or to apply a reduced maximum retransmission number for RLC AM retransmission.

[0059] In some embodiments, the configuration may comprise a field indicating a reduced  retransmission number for the RLC SDU, e.g., a reduced maximum retransmission number for the RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the field may indicate the value of maximum RLC AM retransmission number to be applied (e.g., if an indication is received from upper layer) . In some embodiments, the value of maximum RLC AM retransmission number to be applied may be configured per logical channel group (LCG) or PDCP configuration or RLC configuration.

[0060] In some embodiments, the configuration may comprise a field indicating whether the mechanism of stopping or reducing the retransmission of the RLC SDU is enabled. In other words, the field may indicate whether to enable the mechanism of stopping RLC AM retransmission or applying a reduced maximum retransmission number for RLC AM. In some embodiments, the mechanism may be enabled per PDCP configuration or RLC configuration.

[0061] For illustration, an example configuration is described as below.

[0062] In this example, an information element (IE) “delayThresholdForRlcRetx” indicates the threshold used to determine whether to indicate lower layer to stop RLC AM retransmission or to apply a reduced maximum retransmission number for RLC AM  retransmission, an IE “rlcAmRetx” indicates whether to enable the mechanism of stopping RLC AM retransmission or applying a reduced maximum retransmission number for RLC AM, an IE “maxRetxThreshold2” indicates the value of maximum RLC AM retransmission number to be applied, an IE “PDCP-Config” indicates a PDCP configuration, and an IE “RLC-Config” indicates a RLC configuration.

[0063] Continuing to refer to FIG. 2, the terminal device 110 may transmit 220, from a PDCP entity to lower layers, an indication to perform an operation comprising at least one of stopping the retransmission of the RLC SDU or applying a reduced retransmission number for the RLC SDU.

[0064] In some embodiments, if the discard timer for the PDCP SDU expires, the terminal device 110 may transmit the indication from the PDCP entity to the lower layers. In some embodiments, if the remaining value of the discard timer for the PDCP SDU is lower than or equal to the threshold, the terminal device 110 may transmit the indication from the PDCP entity to the lower layers. In some embodiments, if the mechanism of stopping or reducing the retransmission of the RLC SDU is enabled or activated, the terminal device 110 may transmit the indication from the PDCP entity to the lower layers.

[0065] For illustration, an example operation of the PDCP entity may be described as below.

[0066] If at least one of the following conditions is met:

[0067] the discardTimer expires for a PDCP SDU, or

[0068] the remaining value of discard timer for a PDCP SDU is below a configured threshold (e.g., delayThresholdForRlcRetx) , or

[0069] the mechanism of stopping RLC AM retransmission or applying a new max / remaining RLC AM retransmission number is configured / activated,

[0070] and / or if the corresponding PDCP Data PDU has already been submitted to lower layers, a transmitting PDCP entity shall indicates lower layers (e.g. RLC or MAC layer) to perform at least one of the actions below:

[0071] stop the retransmission of the PDCP Data PDU (or RLC SDU) ,

[0072] apply a new max / remaining retransmission number for the PDCP Data PDU (or RLC SDU) , or

[0073] other similar indication for AM retransmission.

[0074] In the example operation, if all PDUs of a PDU set are needed for the usage of PDU set, and at least one of the conditions described above is satisfied, then for all the PDCP data PDUs belonging to the same PDU set which has already been submitted to lower layers, the transmitting PDCP entity shall indicates lower layers (e.g. RLC or MAC layer) to perform the actions described above.

[0075] With reference to FIG. 2, if the indication is received from the PDCP entity, the terminal device 110 may perform 230 an operation by a transmitting side of an AM RLC entity. In some embodiments, if the indication is received from the PDCP entity, the terminal device 110 may stop the retransmission of the RLC SDU by an AM RLC entity. In some embodiments, if the indication is received from the PDCP entity, the terminal device 110 may discard the RLC SDU by the AM RLC entity. In some embodiments, if the indication is received from the PDCP entity, the terminal device 110 may apply the reduced retransmission number by the AM RLC entity. In some embodiments, if the indication is received from the PDCP entity, the terminal device 110 may reset a counter for the retransmission of the RLC SDU by the AM RLC entity, e.g., by setting the counter to zero. In some embodiments, if the indication is received from the PDCP entity, and if a value of the counter is equal to the reduced retransmission number, the terminal device 110 may transmit no indication from the AM RLC entity to upper layers that a maximum retransmission number has been reached.

[0076] For illustration, an example operation of the AM RLC entity may be described as below.

[0077] If at least one of the following conditions is satisfied:

[0078] an indication is received from upper layer (e.g. RRC / PDCP) or lower layer (e.g. MAC) to discard a RLC SDU, or to stop retransmission of a particular RLC SDU, or to apply a new max / remaining retransmission number of a particular RLC SDU or other similar indication for AM retransmission, or

[0079] the mechanism of stopping RLC AM retransmission or applying a new max / remaining RLC AM retransmission number is configured / enabled / activated,

[0080] a transmitting side of an AM RLC entity shall perform at least one of the following actions:

[0081] stop the retransmission of the indicated RLC SDU,

[0082] discard the indicated RLC SDU,

[0083] apply a new value of max / remaining retransmission number. For example, reduce the maximum number of retransmissions corresponding to an RLC SDU,

[0084] set RETX_COUNT associated with the RLC SDU to zero, or

[0085] if new value of max / remaining retransmission number (e.g., maxRetxThreshold2) is applied / configured, and / or if RETX_COUNT = maxRetxThreshold2, the transmitting side of the AM RLC entity shall not indicate to upper layers that maximum retransmission has been reached (or not trigger RLF) .

[0086] In this example operation, RETX_COUNT denotes a counter for a retransmission of a RLC SDU.

[0087] So far, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism based on an indication is described in connection with FIG. 2. Resource efficiency may be improved by avoiding unnecessary RLC AM retransmissions.

[0088] FIG. 3 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating another example process 300 of communication for stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 300 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 300 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 3 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any suitable additional steps may be added.

[0089] As shown in FIG. 3, the network device 120 may transmit 310 a configuration for enabling a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU. In other words, the network device 120 may configure to the terminal device 110 a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit the configuration via a RRC signaling. In some embodiments, the configuration may comprise a field (e.g. rlcRetxTimer) indicating a value of a timer (for convenience, also referred to as a first timer herein) .

[0090] With reference to FIG. 3, the terminal device 110 may start 320 the first timer for the RLC SDU. In some embodiments, if an indication for the retransmission of the RLC SDU is received by a transmitting side of an AM RLC entity, the terminal device 110 may  start the first timer for the RLC SDU. In some embodiments, if the mechanism of stopping or reducing the retransmission of the RLC SDU is enabled or activated, the terminal device 110 may start the first timer for the RLC SDU.

[0091] For illustration, an example operation of the AM RLC entity may be described as below.

[0092] When at least one of the following conditions is satisfied:

[0093] an indication for (e.g., timer-based) RLC AM retransmission is received from upper layer (e.g. RRC / PDCP) or lower layer (e.g. MAC) , or

[0094] the mechanism of timer-based RLC AM retransmission number or rlcRetxTimer is configured / enabled / activated,

[0095] a transmitting side of the AM RLC entity shall start a timer (i.e., the first timer) for the indicated RLC SDU.

[0096] With reference to FIG. 3, the terminal device 110 may stop 330 the retransmission of the RLC SDU if the first timer expires.

[0097] For illustration, an example operation of the AM RLC entity may be described as below.

[0098] If rlcRetxTimer expires, a transmitting side of the AM RLC entity shall stop the retransmission for the indicated RLC SDU.

[0099] In some embodiments, if a maximum retransmission number is reached, the terminal device 110 may stop the first timer for the RLC SDU. In some embodiments, if an indication of discarding the RLC SDU is received by the AM RLC entity, the terminal device 110 may stop the timer for the RLC SDU. In some embodiments, if a positive acknowledgement for the RLC SDU is received, the terminal device 110 may stop the timer for the RLC SDU.

[0100] For illustration, an example operation of the AM RLC entity may be described as below.

[0101] If at least one of following conditions is satisfied, a transmitting side of the AM RLC entity shall stop rlcRetxTimer (if running) for the corresponding RLC SDU:

[0102] the max number of retransmission is reached (i.e., RETX_COUNT = maxRetxThreshold or maxRetxThreshold2) ,

[0103] an indication is received from upper layer (e.g. RRC / PDCP) or lower layer (e.g. MAC) to discard a RLC SDU, or

[0104] a positive acknowledgement (confirmation of successful reception by its peer AM RLC entity via STATUS PDU) for an RLC SDU is received.

[0105] In this example, rlcRetxTimer indicates the first timer, RETX_COUNT indicates a counter for a retransmission of a RLC SDU, maxRetxThreshold indicates a maximum retransmission number (i.e., the first maximum retransmission number) , and maxRetxThreshold2 indicates a reduced maximum retransmission number (i.e., the second maximum retransmission number) .

[0106] So far, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism based on a timer is described in connection with FIG. 3. Resource efficiency may be improved by avoiding unnecessary RLC AM retransmissions.

[0107] FIG. 4 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating still another example process 400 of communication for stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 400 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 4 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. For example, the order of the steps may be changed. Some of the steps may be omitted or any suitable additional steps may be added.

[0108] As shown in FIG. 4, the network device 120 may transmit 410 a configuration for enabling a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU. In other words, the network device 120 may configure to the terminal device 110 a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit the configuration via a RRC signaling. In some embodiments, the configuration may comprise a field indicating whether the RLC SDU is discarded even if the RLC SDU or the segment of the RLC SDU has been submitted to the lower layers.

[0109] With reference to FIG. 4, if the terminal device 110 is configured to discard the RLC SDU even if the RLC SDU or a segment of the RLC SDU has been submitted to lower layers, and if an indication of discarding the RLC SDU is received by a transmitting side of an AM RLC entity from an upper layer, the terminal device 110 may perform 420 an operation comprising at least one of the following: discarding the RLC SDU, or stopping the  retransmission of the RLC SDU.

[0110] For illustration, an example operation of a RLC entity may be described as below.

[0111] When indicated from upper layer (e.g. PDCP) to discard a particular RLC SDU, and if UE, DRB or the corresponding RLC entity is configured to discard the RLC SDU even if the RLC SDU or a segment thereof has been submitted to the lower layers, a transmitting side of an AM RLC entity or a transmitting UM RLC entity shall discard the indicated RLC SDU and / or stop the retransmission of the indicated RLC SDU (e.g., regardless of whether the RLC SDU or a segment thereof has been submitted to the lower layers) .

[0112] The transmitting side of an RLC entity may introduce an RLC SN gap when discarding a RLC SDU or stopping or reducing the transmission or retransmission of a RLC SDU. With reference to FIG. 4, in some embodiments, the transmitting side of the RLC entity (e.g., the terminal device 110) may transmit 430 a RLC control PDU to the receiving side of the RLC entity (e.g., the network device 120) to indicate RLC sequence number (SN) information of a discarded set of RLC SDUs.

[0113] In some embodiments, the RLC control PDU may comprise a control PDU type (CPT) value indicating that the RLC control PDU is for notifying the RLC SN information of the discarded set of RLC SDUs. In other words, a CPT value (e.g., 002) may be defined to indicate that the control PDU is for notifying the discarded RLC SN information.

[0114] In some embodiments, the RLC control PDU may comprise a field indicating a RLC SN or a RLC SN range of the discarded set of RLC SDUs. In other words, the field indicates the RLC SN or RLC SN range of RLC SDUs that have been discarded (i.e., by the transmitting side of the AM RLC entity) .

[0115] With reference to FIG. 4, in some embodiments, upon reception of the RLC control PDU indicating RLC SN information of the discarded set of RLC SDUs, the receiving side of the AM RLC entity (i.e., the network device 120) may update 440 a receive state variable (e.g., RX_Next) to an SN of a starting RLC SDU (i.e., the first RLC SDU) with an SN higher than a current value of the receive state variable.

[0116] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may serve as the transmitting side of the AM RLC entity and the terminal device 110 may serve as the receiving side of the AM RLC entity. In this case, the network device 120 may transmit a RLC control PDU indicating RLC SN information of a discarded set of RLC SDUs to the terminal device 110  and the terminal device 110 may update the receive state variable (e.g., RX_Next) to an SN of a starting RLC SDU with an SN higher than a current value of the receive state variable.

[0117] For illustration, an example operation of the RLC entity may be described as below.

[0118] If the RLC control PDU with discarded RLC SN information is received, the receiving side of the RLC entity may consider the RLC SDUs with indicated SN have been discarded or have been received successfully. And it may update RX_Next to the SN of the first RLC SDU with SN > current RX_Next for which not all bytes have been received and for which not have been discarded by the transmitting side.

[0119] So far, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism based on discard optimization is described in connection with FIG. 4. Resource efficiency may be improved by avoiding unnecessary RLC AM retransmissions.

[0120] For any of the above RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanisms in FIGs. 2 to 4, the configuration may further comprise a field indicating a value of a timer (also referred to as a second timer herein) for a receiving side of an RLC entity.

[0121] In some embodiments, if an RLC SDU (also referred to as a first RLC SDU herein) is not fully received by the terminal device 110, the receiving side of the AM RLC entity (e.g., the terminal device 110) may start the second timer for the first RLC SDU.

[0122] For illustration, an example operation of an AL RLC entity may be described as below.

[0123] If an RLC SDU is not fully received by the receiving side of an AM RLC, the receiving side of an AM RLC entity shall start the timer for the corresponding RLC SDU.

[0124] In some embodiments, if the second timer expires, the receiving side of the AM RLC entity (e.g., the terminal device 110) may update a receive state variable (e.g., RX_Next) to an SN of a starting RLC SDU with an SN higher than a current value of the receive state variable.

[0125] For illustration, an example operation of an AL RLC entity may be described as below.

[0126] If the timer expires, the receiving side of the RLC entity may consider the corresponding RLC SDUs have been discarded. And it may update RX_Next to the  SN of the first RLC SDU with SN > current RX_Next for which not all bytes have been received and for which not have been discarded by the transmitting side.

[0127] In some embodiments, the receiving side of the AM RLC entity (e.g., the terminal device 110) may stop the second timer if the first RLC SDU has been successfully received. In some embodiments, the receiving side of the AM RLC entity (e.g., the terminal device 110) may stop the second timer if a RLC control PDU indicating RLC SN information of a discarded set of RLC SDUs is received and the discarded set of RLC SDUs comprises the first RLC SDU.

[0128] For illustration, an example operation of an AL RLC entity may be described as below.

[0129] If at least one of following conditions is satisfied, the receiving side of the AM RLC entity shall stop the timer (if running) for the corresponding RLC SDU:

[0130] the corresponding RLC SDU has been successfully received, or

[0131] RLC control PDU with discarded RLC SN information is received and the RLC SDU with the SN value has been indicated to be discarded.

[0132] So far, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism is described. The following description will be given on activation or deactivation of the RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism.

[0133] EXAMPLE IMPLEMENTATION OF ACTIVATION / DEACTIVATION OF MECHANISM

[0134] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120, a MAC CE for activating or deactivating a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism. In some embodiments, if a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism is configured, the terminal device 110 may determine that the RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism is initially activated or deactivated.

[0135] For illustration, an example procedure may be described as below.

[0136] The RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for the configured DRB (s) may be activated and deactivated by at least one of the following:

[0137] - receiving the RLC AM retransmission Activation / Deactivation MAC CE;

[0138] - receiving the Retransmission RLC Activation / Deactivation MAC CE;

[0139] - indication by RRC (e.g., initially activated or deactivated upon  (re-) configuration by upper layers and after reconfiguration with sync) .

[0140] The RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for all or a subset of associated RLC entities for the configured DRB (s) may be activated and deactivated by at least one of the following:

[0141] - receiving the Retransmission RLC Activation / Deactivation MAC CE;

[0143] In some embodiments, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism may be activated or deactivated by a MAC CE per DRB. In some embodiments, if one or more DRBs (or PDCP / RLC entities) are configured with RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism, the network device 120 may activate or deactivate the RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for the configured DRB (s) via a MAC CE (e.g., RLC AM retransmission Activation / Deactivation MAC CE) .

[0144] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a field indicating the activation or deactivation of the mechanism for a DRB and a field indicating an identity of the DRB for which the mechanism applies. An example MAC CE is shown in FIG. 5A.

[0146] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a set of fields corresponding to a set of DRBs, and a field in the set of fields indicates the activation or deactivation of the mechanism for a DRB in the set of DRBs that corresponds to the field. An example MAC CE is shown in FIG. 5B.

[0147] FIG. 5B illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC CE 500B for an activation or deactivation of a mechanism of stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 5B, the MAC CE 500B may include fields Di, where i = 0 to 7. This field Di indicates the activation / deactivation status of RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for DRB i. The field Di may be set to 1 to indicate that the mechanism for DRB i shall be activated. The field Di may be set to 0 to indicate that mechanism for DRB i shall be deactivated. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0148] In some embodiments, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism may be activated or deactivated by a MAC CE per RLC entity. In some embodiments, if one or more DRBs (or PDCP / RLC entities) are configured with RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism, the network device 120 may activate or deactivate the RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for all or a subset of associated RLC entities for the configured DRB (s) via a MAC CE (e.g., Retransmission RLC Activation / Deactivation MAC CE) .

[0149] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a field indicating an identity of a DRB for which the MAC CE applies and a set of fields corresponding to a set of RLC entities. A field in the set of fields indicates the activation or deactivation of the mechanism for a RLC entity in the set of RLC entities that corresponds to the field. An example MAC CE is shown in FIG. 5C.

[0150] FIG. 5C illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC CE 500C for an activation or deactivation of a mechanism of stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 5C, the MAC CE 500C may include a field “DRB ID” and a field “RLCi” , where i = 0 to 2. The field “DRB ID” indicates the identity of DRB for which the MAC CE applies. The field “RLCi” indicates the activation / deactivation status of RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for RLC entity i or corresponding LCH (e.g., where i may be ascending order of logical channel ID of RLC entities in the order of MCG and SCG) for the DRB. The field “RLCi” may be set to 1 to indicate that the mechanism for the RLC entity i (or corresponding LCH) shall be activated. The field “RLCi” may be set to 0 to indicate that the mechanism for the RLC entity i (or corresponding LCH) shall be deactivated. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure  does not limit this aspect.

[0151] In some embodiments, a RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism may be activated or deactivated by a MAC CE per LCG. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may activate or deactivate the RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for the configured LCG (s) via a MAC CE.

[0152] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a field indicating the activation or deactivation of the mechanism for a LCG and a field indicating an identity of the LCG for which the mechanism applies. An example MAC CE is shown in FIG. 5D.

[0153] FIG. 5D illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC CE 500D for an activation or deactivation of a mechanism of stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 5D, the MAC CE 500D may include a field “LCG ID” , a field “A / D” and a field “R” . The field “R”indicates a reserved bit. The field “LCG ID” indicates the LCG whose RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism shall be activated or deactivated. The field “A / D” indicates the activation / deactivation status of RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for logical channels (e.g., RLC entities) belonging to the LCG. The field “A / D” may be set to 1 to indicate that the mechanism shall be activated for the corresponding LCG. The field “A / D” may be set to 0 to indicate that the mechanism shall be deactivated for the corresponding LCG. It is to be understood that any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0154] In some embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a set of fields corresponding to a set of LCGs, and a field in the set of fields indicates the activation or deactivation of the mechanism for a LCG in the set of LCGs that corresponds to the field. An example MAC CE is shown in FIG. 5E.

[0155] FIG. 5E illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating another example MAC CE 500E for an activation or deactivation of a mechanism of stopping or reducing RLC AM retransmission according to embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 5E, the MAC CE 500E may include fields LCGi, where i = 0 to 7. This field LCGi indicates the activation / deactivation status of RLC AM retransmission stop or reduction mechanism for logical channels (e.g., RLC entities) belonging to the LCG i. The field LCGi may be set to 1 to indicate that the mechanism for LCG i shall be activated. The field LCGi may be set to 0 to indicate that mechanism for LCG i shall be deactivated. It is to be understood that  any other suitable values may also be feasible, and the present disclosure does not limit this aspect.

[0182] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 800 of communication implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the method 800 may be performed at the terminal device 110 as shown in FIG. 1. For the purpose of discussion, in the following, the method 800 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the method 800 may include additional blocks not shown and / or may omit some blocks as shown, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0183] At block 810, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120, a configuration for enabling a mechanism of stopping or reducing a retransmission of a RLC SDU. In some embodiments, the configuration may comprise at least one of the following: a field indicating a threshold for a remaining value of a discard timer for a PDCP SDU; a field indicating whether the mechanism of stopping or reducing the retransmission of the RLC SDU is enabled; or a field indicating the reduced retransmission number.

[0184] At block 820, the terminal device 110 may transmit, from a PDCP entity to lower layers, an indication to perform an operation comprising at least one of the following: stopping the retransmission of the RLC SDU, or applying a reduced retransmission number for the RLC SDU.
