Abstract
Description
[0001] TINTED SUNSCREEN COMPOSITIONS, PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING A TINTED SUNSCREEN COMPOSITION, AND USE OF A TINTED SUNSCREEN COMPOSITION
[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The invention is directed to tinted sunscreen compositions comprising high concentration of pigments and high Sun Protection Factor (SPF), in the form of a stable inverted emulsion water-in-oil (W / O). The present invention is also directed to a process for manufacturing a tinted sunscreen composition and the use of a tinted sunscreen composition.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The photoprotection of keratinous materials, including both skin and hair, is considered of great importance in order to protect from sun-damage, sunburn, photoaging, as well as to decrease the chances of skin cancer development caused by exposure to ultraviolet (“UV”) radiation. There are typically two types of UVA / UVB sunscreen compositions used to accomplish photoprotection, namely, inorganic UV filters and organic UV filters.
[0006] The degree of UV protection afforded by a sunscreen composition is directly related to the amount and type of UV filters contained therein. Particularly, sunscreen compositions must provide good protection against the sun rays, a measure of which is the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value, a desirable balance between UVA and UVB protection, particularly a minimum UVA protection factor, yet have satisfactory sensory perception, such as a smooth but not greasy feel upon application.
[0007] Furthermore, it is also desirable to produce a sunscreen composition that not only confers photoprotection of keratinous materials, but also provides additional properties. For example, it is desired to produce a tinted sunscreen composition with high SPF and UVA / UVB protection, with the capability of tinting the skin to correct imperfections, preferably with high coverage that is capable of suiting different skin tones.
[0008] Also, the market for tinted sunscreen compositions is growing and becoming more and more important, and consumers are looking for innovation, such as a sunscreen composition with makeup properties or appearance after application.
[0009] The degree of coverage provided by a tinted sunscreen composition, when applied to the skin, is directly related to its technology and the amount of pigments present in the composition. However, the combination of sunscreen and tinting properties with other sensorial benefits such as dry touch, good spreadability, the presence of different raw materials (fillers, emollients), result in a complex system with high amount of UV filters and pigments, which is difficult to achieve, particularly because the presence of high amounts of colored pigments and UV filters in tinted sunscreen compositions results in stability issues in the formulation, especially the migration of the pigments to the surface of the composition, even creating discoloration spots on said surface. These issues are intensified in darker shades of tinted sunscreen compositions.
[0010] To overcome the drawbacks of the state of the art, the present inventors achieved tinted sunscreen compositions with high SPF and UVA / UVB protection containing high concentration of pigments, provided with desired color coverage when applied to the skin, which is stable, does not present migration and separations of the colored pigments on the surface of the composition.
[0011] In particular, the inventors of the present application have surprisingly managed to develop a tinted sunscreen composition with high pigment concentration in the form of a stable inverted emulsion (W / O) with high SPF without silicones nor offensive sun filters, while the composition had good sensorial attributes and stability. The said invert emulsion (W / O) sunscreen allows the ingredients of the composition in the external phase (oil phase) bring structure to the formula that enable to disperse and stabilize a high concentration of pigments. Thus, the synergy of the ingredient combination according to the tinted sunscreen composition of present invention allows stabilizing the formulation and high amount of pigment.

The stability of the composition of Ex. 5 was studied for 2 months at 4°C, 25°C and 45°C. Using optical microscopy was possible to determine that there was no crystallization of UV filters after 2 months at 4°C. Also, observations of the formula after 2 months at 25°C and 45°C showed no migration of pigments to the surface proving the stability of the dispersion. When considering the emulsion stability, the microscopy observation of the formulas mentioned above did not showed changes in the droplets size and distributions and in the characteristics of the borders when compared with the not stressed formula. These results were observed for both Ex.5 and Ex.6, proving the stability of formulas.
