AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing paging solutions for single-hop U2N relay do not adequately consider the coverage status and RRC states of intermediate terminal devices in multi-hop relay scenarios, leading to inefficiencies in paging delivery.

Method used

Implementing updated procedural text and signaling information elements for multi-hop relay, allowing the intermediate terminal device to perform paging delivery when in coverage, and the relay terminal device to handle both intermediate and remote terminal devices' paging when out of coverage, with mode determination at the relay or remote terminal device side.

Benefits of technology

Enhances paging efficiency by enabling appropriate paging delivery modes based on the coverage status and RRC states of intermediate and relay terminal devices, ensuring reliable communication in challenging network conditions.

[0047] The communications in the communication environment 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0048] FIGS. 2A-2D illustrate example scenarios 200A, 200B, 200C, and 200D of multi-hop U2N relay. As shownin FIGS. 2A-2D, multi-hop U2N relaymay be implemented in a number of different ways, and thus the U2N relay mechanisms may vary in different scenarios.

[0049] In the scenario 200A in FIG. 2A, a relay terminal device 220 and an intermediateterminal device 230 are in coverage of a network device 240 and a remote terminal device 210 is out of thecoverage of the network device240. The relay terminal device 220and the intermediate terminal device 230are in RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE state.

[0050] In the scenario 200B in FIG. 2B, the relay terminal device 220is in coverage of the network device 240. The intermediate terminal device 230 and the remote terminal device 210 are out of the coverage of the network device 240. The relay terminal device  220 and the intermediate terminal device 230 arein RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE state.

[0051] In thescenario 200C in FIG. 2C, the relay terminal device 220 and the intermediate terminal device 230 are in coverage of a network device 240 and the remote terminal device 210 is out of the coverage of the network device 240. The relay terminal device 220 isinradio resource controlconnected (RRC_CONNECTED) state with the network device 240 and the intermediate terminal device 230 is in RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE state.

[0052] In thescenario 200D in FIG. 2D, the relay terminal device 220 is in coverage of a network device 240. The intermediate terminal device 230 and the remote terminal device 210 are out of the coverage of the network device 240. The relay terminal device 220 isinRRC_CONNECTED state with the network device and the intermediate terminal device 230 isin RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE state.

[0053] For example scenarios 200A, 200B, 200C, and 200D, the remote terminal device 210 is an example of the first terminal device 110 in FIG. 1, such as a layer-2 (L2) U2N remote terminal device; the relay terminal device 220 is an example of the second terminal device 120 in FIG. 1, such as a L2 U2N relay terminal device; and the intermediate terminal device 230 is an example of the third terminal device 130 in FIG. 1, such as a L2 U2N intermediate terminal device.

[0054] Aterminal device is currently supported to connect to anetworkdevice through one hop, i.e., via a relay. However, single hop U2N might not meet actual needs, for example, in areas with poor network signals such as basements or forests. Therefore, multi-hop U2N relay is needed. For SL multi-hop U2N relay, how to perform paging forwarding for both the remote terminal device and the intermediate terminal device is not the same as the previous U2N relay mechanism. Both a coverage statusfor the intermediate terminal deviceand a RRC state for therelayterminal device should be considered.

[0055] Regarding pagingforsingle-hop U2N relay, there aresome solutions. When both arelay terminal deviceand aremote terminal deviceare in the RRC_IDLEorRRC_INACTIVE state, the relay terminal devicemonitors paging occasions of its connected remote terminal device (s) . When therelay terminal deviceneeds to monitor paging for theremote terminal device, the relay terminal  deviceshould monitor all POs of the remote terminal device. When the relay terminal deviceis in RRC_CONNECTED stateand remote terminal device (s) is in RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVEstate, there are two options for paging delivery.

[0056] In one option, the relay terminal device monitors POs of its connected remote terminal device (s) if the active downlink bandwidth part (DL BWP) of the relay terminal device is configured with common search space including paging search space. In another option, the paging delivery of the remote terminal device can be performed through a dedicated RRC message from the network device to the relay terminal device. The dedicated RRC message for delivering remote terminal device paging to the RRC_CONNECTED relay terminal device may contain one or more remote terminal device IDs (5G S-Temporary Mobile Subscription Identifier (5G-S-TMSI) or inactive radio network temporary identifier (I-RNTI) ) .

[0057] It is up to network implementation to decide which of the above two options to use. The relay terminal device in RRC_CONNECTED state, if configured with paging search space, can determine whether to monitor POs for a remote terminal devicebased on the indication within the PC5-RRC signalling received from the remote terminal device.

[0058] The remote terminal device in RRC_IDLE state provides 5G-S-TMSI and terminal device specific discontinuousreception (DRX) cycle (if configured by upper layer) to the relay terminal device for requesting to perform PO monitoring. The remote terminal device in RRC_INACTIVE stateprovides the minimum value of two terminal device specific DRX cycles (if configured respectively by upper layer and next generation radio access network (NG-RAN) ) , 5G-S-TMSI and I-RNTI to the relay terminal device for PO monitoring. The relay terminal device in RRC_CONNECTED state can notify the remote terminal device information (i.e. 5G-S-TMSI / I-RNTI) to the gNB via the SidelinkUEInformationNR message for paging delivery purpose. The relay terminal device receives paging messages to check the 5G-S-TSMI / I-RNTI and sends relevant paging record to the remote terminal device accordingly.

[0059] Upon receiving the Paging message by a terminal deviceor receiving PagingRecord from its connected relay terminal deviceby aremote terminal device, the terminal deviceshall:

[0060] 1> if in RRC_IDLE, for each of the PagingRecord, if any, included in the Paging message, or

[0061] 1> if in RRC_IDLE, for each of the PagingRecord, if any, included in the UuMessageTransferSidelink message received from the connected relay terminal device:

[0062] 2> if the ue-Identity included in the PagingRecord matches the UE identity allocated by upper layers:

[0063] 3> if upper layers indicate the support of paging cause:

[0064] 4> forward the ue-Identity, accessType (if present) and paging cause (if determined) to the upper layers;

[0065] 3> else:

[0066] 4> forward the ue-Identity and accessType (if present) to the upper layers;

[0067] 1> if the terminal deviceis acting as a relay terminal device, for each of the PagingRecord, if any, included in the Paging message:

[0068] 2> if the ue-Identity included in the PagingRecord in the Paging message matches the terminal deviceidentity in sl-PagingIdentityRemoteUE included in sl-PagingInfo-RemoteUE received in RemoteUEInformationSidelink message from aremote terminal device:

[0069] 3> inititate the Uu Message transfer in sidelink to that terminal deviceas specified in 5.8.9.9.

[0070] In the legacy SL U2N relay, the existing paging delivery solutions don’ t considerboth the coverage status for the intermediate terminal device and the RRC states for the relay terminal device. According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, paging for multi-hop relay is proposed, by which the procedural text and signaling information element (IE) are updated. When an intermediate terminal device is in coverage, the intermediate terminal devicemay perform paging delivery for a remote terminal device, or a relay terminal device perform paging delivery for both the intermediate terminal device and the remote terminal device. When the intermediate terminal device is out of coverage, the relay terminal devicemay perform paging delivery for both the intermediate terminal deviceand the remote terminal device. APaging delivery mode to be used can bedetermined at the relay terminal deviceside, intermediate terminal deviceside orremote terminal deviceside. In addition, if the relay terminal device is in RRC_CONNECTED state, it may take charge of PO monitoring of both the intermediate terminal deviceand the remote terminal device.

[0071] FIG. 3 illustrates a signaling chart 300 of an example paging procedure for multi-hop relay according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example paging procedurecomprisesan example proximity communication 5 (PC5)  connection establishment procedure, an example modedetermination procedure 325, an examplePO monitoring procedure 330 and an examplemode switch procedure 335. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 300 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 300 at least involves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, and a third terminal device 130.

[0072] As shown in FIG. 3, in some example embodiments, during the example PC5 connection establishment procedure, the thirdterminal device 130mayestablish (305) a first connection between the first terminal device 110. The third terminal device130 andestablish (310) a second connection between the third terminal device 130 and the second terminal device 120. After the second connection is established, the thirdterminal device 130 may transmit (315) an indication of the establishment of the second connection to the first terminal device 110. In some embodiments, such indication may be transmitted via at least one of: sidelink control information (SCI) , sidelink media access control control element (SL MAC CE) or PC5-RRC message. Then, the first terminal device 110 may establish (320) a third connection between the first terminal device 110 and the second terminal device 120.

[0073] In an example, each of the firstconnection, second connection and third connectionmay be, for example, a PC5-RRC connection or a PC5-Sconnection. After the PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection between the second terminal device 120 and the third terminal device 130 is set up, and optionally, after the PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection between the third terminal device 130 and the first terminal device 110 is set up, the third terminal device 130maytransmitan indication of the PC5-RRC connection establishment (for example, between U2N intermediate UE and U2N relay UE) towards the first terminal device 110. The indication may be sent via at least one of: SCI, SL MAC CEor PC5-RRC message. After receiving such indication, the first terminal device 110 will set up end to end PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection with the second terminal device 120.

[0074] After these connections are set up, PO monitoring may be performed. In some embodiments, there can be a plurality of modes for PO monitoring, which is referred toas paging delivery modes. Thus, in these embodiments, there may be a need to determine which mode to use. The mode determination procedure 325 may be performed to determine a mode to be used froma plurality of paging delivery modes. Theseembodiments will be described below with reference to FIGS. 5A-5C. In some embodiments, the PO monitoring procedure 330 may be performed based on the  determined paging delivery mode or a predefined paging delivery mode. Example embodiments regarding the PO monitoring procedure 330 will be described below with reference toFIGS. 4A-4C. In some embodiments, themode switch procedure 335 may be performed. Example embodiments regarding the mode switch procedure 335 will be described below with reference toFIGS. 6A-6C.

[0075] Example embodiments regarding the PO monitoring procedure 330 are now described. FIGS. 4A-4C illustrates signaling charts 330A, 330B and 330C of example PO monitoring procedures according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example PO monitoring procedures may be considered as examples of the PO monitoring procedure 330.

[0076] For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 330A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 330A involves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, and a third terminal device 130, and showsa first mode (also referred to as paging delivery mode A) in which the second terminal device 120 performs paging occasion monitoring for the first and third terminal devices. In some embodiments, in, if thethird terminal device 130 is out of coverage, the paging delivery mode Amay be employed. Accordingly, thesecond terminal device 120may perform paging delivery for both the third terminal device 130 andthefirst terminal device 110.

[0077] As shown in FIG. 4A, the first terminal device 110 may transmit (405) first information related to paging (also referred to as paging related information) of the first terminal device 110 to the second terminal device 120. The first information may comprise at least one of: an identity (for example a UE identity) of the first terminal device 110, or an indication of a paging cycle for the first terminal device 110. The third terminal device 130 may transmit (410) third information related to paging (also referred to as paging related information) of the third terminal device 130 to the second terminal device 120. The third information may comprise at least one of: an identity of the third terminal device 130, or an indication of a paging cycle for the third terminal device 130.

[0078] In an example, after the end-to-end PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection is established, the first terminal device 110may transmit paging related information towards the second terminal device 120 via the end-to-end PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection. Alternatively, or in addition, the third terminal device 130may transmit paging related information towards the second terminal device 120. For example, such paging related information  mayinclude at least one of the following: the UE identity, to identify either an intermediate terminal device or a remote terminal device; andan indication of the paging cycle, which indicates the paging periodicity with different radio frames.

[0079] The first terminal device 110 may act as a remote terminal device, the second terminal device 120 may act as a relay terminal device for the first terminal device, and the third terminal device 130 may act as an intermediate terminal device between the first and second terminal devices 110 and 120. After receiving information related to paging of the first terminal device 110 andthethirdterminal device 130, the second terminal device 120 may perform (415) PO monitoring for the first terminal device 110 andthethird terminal device 130 based on the received information. For example, the L2 U2N relay UE may monitor POs based on the provided information from the L2 U2N remote UE and the L2 U2N intermediate UE.

[0080] If a paging record for the third terminal device 130 is monitored, the second terminal device 120 may transmit (420) thepaging record to the third terminal device 130. If a paging record for the first terminal device 110 is monitored, the second terminal device 120 may transmit (425) thepaging recordto the first terminal device 110. For example, the second terminal device 120 may receive paging messages to check the UE identity and sends relevant paging records to the first terminal device 110 and third terminal device 130 accordingly via PC5-RRC messages.

[0081] For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 330B will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 330B involves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, and a third terminal device 130, and shows asecond mode (which is also referred to aspaging delivery mode B) . In the paging delivery mode B, the second terminal device 120 performs paging occasion monitoring for the first terminal device 110 and the third terminal device 130 performs paging occasion monitoring by itself. For example, ifthe third terminal device 130 is in coverage of the network device 140, the second terminal device 120may perform paging delivery for thefirst terminal device 110 and the third terminal device 130 monitors PO for itself.

[0082] As shown in FIG. 4B, the first terminal device 110 may transmit (430) first information related to paging (also referred to as paging related information) of the first terminal device 110 to the second terminal device 120. In an example, after the end-to-end PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection is established, the first terminal device 110may  transmit paging related information towards the second terminal device 120 via the end-to-end PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection. The first information is same as the first informationdescribed in FIG. 4A. For example, such paging related information can include at least one of the following: the UE identity, to identify either an intermediate terminal device or the remote terminal device; and an indication of the paging cycle, which indicates the paging periodicity with different radio frames.

[0083] The second terminal device 120 may perform (435) PO monitoring based on the received information. If a paging record for the first terminal device 110 is monitored, the second terminal device 120 may transmit (440) thepaging record to the first terminal device 110. In an example, the second terminal device 120 may monitor POs based on the provided information from thefirst terminal device 110. The second terminal device 120 may receive paging messages to check the UE identity and sends relevant paging record to the first terminal device 110 accordingly via a PC5-RRC message.

[0084] In some embodiments, ifthe third terminal device 130 is moving from in-coverage towards out of coverage, it may send (442) a coverage status change indication towards both the second terminal device 120 and the first terminal device 110. The coverage status change indication may be sent via at least one of the following: PC5-RRC message, SL MAC CEor SCI.

[0085] For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 330C will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 330Cinvolves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, and a third terminal device 130, and shows a third mode, which is also referred to aspaging delivery mode C. In the paging delivery mode C, the third terminal device 130 performs PO monitoring for the first terminal device 110 and the third terminal device 130 itself. For example, the L2 U2N relay UE may perform PO monitoring for itself and the L2 U2N intermediate UE may performs PO monitoring for itself and for the L2 U2N remote UE.

[0086] As shown in FIG. 4C, the first terminal device 110 may transmit (445) first information related to paging (also referred to as paging related information) of the first terminal device 110 to the third terminal device 130. In an example, after the end-to-end PC5 RRC / PC5 S connection between the second terminal device 120 and the first terminal device 110 is established, the first terminal device 110maysend the end to end (E2E) PC5 RRC connection established indication towards the third terminal device 130  via PC5-RRC message, SL MAC CE or SCI. The first terminal device 110may transmit paging related information towards thethird terminal device 130. The first information is same as the first informationdescribed in FIG. 4A. For example, such paging related information may include at least one of the following information: the UE identity, to identify either the relay terminal device or the remote terminal device; or an indication of the paging cycle, which indicates the paging periodicity with different radio frame.

[0087] The secondterminal device 120 may perform (450) PO monitoring for itself. The third terminal device 130 may perform (455) PO monitoring for the first terminal device 110 based on the first information. If a paging record for the first terminal device 110 is monitored, the third terminal device 120 may transmit (440) the paging record to the first terminal device 110.

[0088] According to the above example embodiments of the present disclosure, the procedural text and signaling IE may be updated inpaging for multi-hop relay. Ifan intermediate terminal device is in coverage, the intermediate terminal devicemay perform paging delivery for a remote terminal device, or a relay terminal deviceperform paging delivery for both the intermediate terminal deviceand the remote terminal device. Ifthe intermediate terminal deviceis out of coverage, the relay terminal devicemay perform paging delivery for both the intermediate terminal deviceand the remote terminal device.

[0089] As mentioned above, in some embodiments, there are a plurality of paging delivery modes as candidates, for example but not limited to the modes described with reference to FIGS. 4A-4C. In these embodiments, determination of the mode to use may be needed. FIGS. 5A-5C illustrates signaling charts 325A, 325B and 325C of example modedetermination procedures according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example modedetermination procedures in FIGS. 5A-5C may be considered examples of the mode determination procedure 325.

[0090] In some embodiments, determination of the mode to use may be performed at the second terminal device 120, for example, the relay terminal device. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 325A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 325A involves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, a third terminal device 130 and a network device 140. For example, amodeis determined at the relay UE side from a plurality of paging delivery modes.

[0091] As shown in FIG. 5A, the second terminal device 120 may transmit (505) a second request for conditions related to paging occasion monitoring (also known as paging related condition enquiry) to the third terminal device 130. Since the second terminal device 120 is always in coverage, it can constantly monitor PO. Therefore, thesecond terminal device 120maydecide whether it will perform PO monitor for the first terminal device 110 and / or the third terminal device 130 based on the condition of thethird terminal device 130. In an example, after the PC5-RRC / PC5-Sconnection is established betweenthethird terminal device 130 and the second terminal device 120, the second terminal device 120 may send the paging related condition enquirymessage towards the third terminal device 130. For example, such paging related condition enquiry message can be carried via at least one of: SCI, SL MAC CEor PC5-RRC / PC5-Smessage.

[0092] The third terminal device 130may transmit (510) a third response (also known as paging related condition message) indicating a condition related to paging occasion monitoringto the second terminal device 120. The third response may comprise at least one of: a signal measurement result (also known as radio signal) of a Uu interface at the third terminal device 130, a number of remote terminal devices connected to the third terminal device130, an identification of a cell serving the third terminal device130 (which may be, for example, the cell ID of the third terminal device 130) , or a coverage state of thethird terminal device 130.

[0093] In an example, after receiving the paging related condition enquiry message, the third terminal device 130may feedback paging related condition message towards the second terminal device 120. In some embodiments, such paging related condition message mayinclude at least one of the following: the coverage status of third terminal device 130 to indicate whether the third terminal device 130 is in coverage or out of coverage; the cell ID of the third terminal device 130, such asNR cell global identifier (NCGI) or EUTRA cell global identifier (ECGI) ; the radio signal measurement result of the Uu interface, for example, reference signal receiving power (RSRP) or reference signal receiving quality (RSRQ) ; or the number of connectedremote terminal devices for the third terminal device 130. It would be appreciated that only some examples are provided here, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0094] After receivingthe third responsefrom the third terminal device 130, the second terminal device 120 may determine (515) the paging delivery mode based on the third  response. The second terminal device 120 then may transmit (520) at least one of the third response or an indication of the paging delivery mode to the network device 140.

[0095] In an example, after receiving such paging related condition message, the second terminal device 120 maydetermine the specific paging delivery mode to use by itself. If the second terminal device 120 is in RRC_CONNECTED state, the second terminal device 120 forwardsthe corresponding information towards the network device 140 via an RRC message, uplink MAC control element (UL MAC CE) or uplink control information (UCI) . If the second terminal device 120 is in RRC_IDLE / RRC_INACTIVE state, the second terminal device 120 may trigger the second terminal device 120 to access into RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0096] The second terminal device120 mayreceive (525) a confirmation on the paging delivery modefrom the network device 140. Further, the second terminal device 120 may transmit (530) an indication of the paging delivery mode to the third terminal device 130 or transmit (535) the indication of the paging delivery mode to the firstterminal device 110. Insuchaway, the paging delivery mode is determined at the secondterminal device 120and signaled tothe first terminal device 110 or the third terminal device 130.

[0097] In an example, optionally, after receiving the network device 140’s indication on the paging delivery mode decision via an RRC message, DL MAC CE ordownlink control information (DCI) , or after the second terminal device 120 determines the indication of the paging delivery mode by itself, the second terminal device 120 may send the indication towards both thethird terminal device 130 and / or the first terminal device 110.

[0098] In an example, the second terminal device 120may send the indication via E2E PC5-RRC message towards the first terminal device 110 and send the indication via Hop-By-Hop (HBH) PC5-RRC message towards the third terminal device 130. Alternatively, the second terminal device 120may send the indication via HBH PC5-RRC message towards thethird terminal device 130, and the third terminal device 130may forward the indication via HBH PC5-RRC message, SL MAC CE or SCI towards the L2 U2N Remote UE.

[0099] In some embodiments, determination of the mode to use may be performed at the third terminal device 120, for example, the intermediate terminal device. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 325B will be discussed with reference to FIG.  1. The signaling chart325Binvolves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, a third terminal device 130 and a network device 140. For example, a modeis determined at theU2N intermediate side from a plurality of paging delivery modes.

[0100] As shown in FIG. 5B, the third terminal device 130 may transmit (540) a third request for conditions related to paging occasion monitoring (also known as paging related condition enquiry) to the second terminal device 130. Inan example, the first terminal device 110may send an E2E PC5-RRC connection establishment indication towards thethird terminal device 130, if at least one of the following is established: the HBH PC5-RRC connection between thesecond terminal device 120 and the third terminal device 130, the HBH PC5-RRC connection between the first terminal device 110 and the third terminal device 130, or the E2E PC5-RRC connection between second terminal device 120 and thefirst terminal device 110. The third terminal device 130then may send a paging related condition enquiry message towards second terminal device 120. For example, such a paging related condition enquiry message can be sent via PC5-RRC message, SL-MAC CEor SCI.

[0101] The secondterminal device120 may receive (545) a fourth response (also known as paging related condition) indicating a condition related to paging occasion monitoring at the second terminal device120 from the second terminal device120. In an example, the second terminal device 120 may feedback paging related condition after it receives the paging related condition enquiry message. The fourth response may comprise at least one of: a signal measurement result (also known as radio signal) of a Uu interface at the second terminal device, information of terminal devices connected to the second terminal device120 (which may be, for example, the number and UE typeof connected U2N intermediate UE and / or U2N remote UE) , an identification (also known as a cell ID) of a cell serving the second terminal device, ora state of a third connection between the second terminal device 120 and the first terminal device110 (also known asE2E PC5-RRC connection status between the second terminal device 120 and thefirst terminal device 110) . In some embodiments, such paging related condition message may include at least one of the following: aradio signal (for, example, RSRP) measurement of Uu interface; the number of connected U2N intermediate UE and / or U2N remote UE (including number and UE type) ; the cell ID, such as ECGI / NCGI; or the E2E PC5-RRC connection status between the second terminal device 120 and thefirst terminal device 110. It would be appreciated that only some examples are provided here, and the scope  of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0102] The thirdterminal device130 maydetermine (550) the paging delivery mode based on the fourth response. The thirdterminal device130 may further transmit (555) at least one of the fourth response or an indication of the paging delivery modeto the network device 140. Then, the thirdterminal device130 may receive (560) a confirmation on the paging delivery modefrom the network device. In an example, after receiving such paging related condition message, the third terminal device 130maydetermine the specific paging delivery mode to use by itself. If the third terminal device 130 is in RRC_CONNECTED state, the third terminal device 130mayforward the corresponding information towards the network device 140 via a RRC message, UL MAC CE or UCI. If the third terminal device 130 is in RRC_IDLE / RRC_INACTIVE state, the third terminal device 130may be triggered to access into RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0103] The third terminal device 130 then may transmit (565) an indication of the paging delivery mode to the second terminal device 120 or transmit (570) the indication of the paging delivery mode to the first terminal device 110. Insuchaway, the paging delivery mode is determined at the third terminal device 130and signaled tothe first terminal device 110 or the second terminal device 120.

[0104] In an example, after receiving the network device 140’s indication on the paging delivery mode via RRC message, DL MAC CE or DCI, or after the third terminal device 130determines the indication by itself, the third terminal device 130may send the indication towards at least one of thesecond terminal device 120 or the first terminal device 110. In an example, the third terminal device 130may send the indication via an HBH PC5-RRC message towards the first terminal device 110 and send the indication via an HBH PC5-RRC message towards the second terminal device 120. Alternatively, the third terminal device 130may send the indication via an HBH PC5-RRC message towards thesecond terminal device 120, and the second terminal device 120may forward the indication via E2E PC5-RRC message, SL MAC CE or SCI towards the L2 U2N Remote UE.

[0105] In some embodiments, ifthe third terminal device 130 is in-coverage, it may choose to use the paging delivery mode B or mode C described above. In some further embodiments, ifthe third terminal device 130moves out of coverage, it maychoose to use the paging delivery mode A described above.

[0106] In some embodiments, determination of the mode to use may be performed at the first terminal device 110, for example, the remote terminal device. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 325C will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart325C involves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, a third terminal device 130 and a network device 140. For example, a modeis determined at theU2N remote UE from a plurality of paging delivery modes.

[0107] As shown in FIG. 5C, the first terminal device 110 transmit (575) a first requestfor conditions related to paging occasion monitoring (also known as paging related condition enquiry) to the second terminal devices 120 andtransmit (580) the first request for conditions related to paging occasion monitoring to the third terminal devices 130. In an example, after the HBH PC5-RRC connection between the third terminal device 130 and thefirst terminal device 110is established, and the E2E PC5-RRC connectionbetween thesecond terminal device 120 and the first terminal device 110isestablished, the first terminal device 110may send the paging related condition enquiry message towards the third terminal device 130 via an HBH PC5-RRC message and towards second terminal device 120 via an E2E PC5-RRC message.

[0108] The second terminal devices 120 may transmit (585) afirst response (also known aspaging related condition information) indicating a condition related to paging occasion monitoring at the second terminal device 120 to the first terminal device 110. In some embodiments, the second terminal device 120 and the third terminal device 130may feedback paging related condition information after receiving such paging related condition enquiry. In details, such paging related condition enquiry can be carried viaPC5-RRC message, SL MAC CEor SCI.

[0109] The first response may comprise at least one of: a signal measurement result (also known as radio signal measurement) of a Uu interface at the second terminal device 120, information of terminal devices connected to the second terminal device 120 (which may be, for example, the number of connected U2N intermediate UE and / or U2N remote UE) , an identification (also known as cell ID) of a cell serving the second terminal device 120, or a state of a third connection between the second terminal device 120 and the first terminal device110 (which may be, for example, the E2E PC5-RRC connection status between the second terminal device 120 and first terminal device 110) . In an example, such paging related condition informationmayinclude at least one of the following: the radio signal (e.g., RSRP) measurement of the Uu interface, the number of  connected U2N intermediate terminal device and / or U2N remote terminal device (including the number and devicetype) , the cell ID (such as ECGI / NCGI) , the E2E PC5-RRC connection status between the second terminal device 120and thefirst terminal device 110. It would be appreciated that only some examples are provided here, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0110] The third terminal devices 130 may transmit (587) a second response indicating a condition related to paging occasion monitoring at the third terminal device 130 to the first terminal device. The second response may comprise at least one of: a signal measurement result of a Uu interface at the third terminal device, anumber of remote terminal devices connected to the third terminal device 130, an identification of a cell serving the third terminal device, or a coverage state of the third terminal device.

[0111] The first terminal device 110 then may determine (590) the paging delivery mode based on the first and second responses. The first terminal device 110 may transmit (592) an indication of the paging delivery mode to the second terminal device 120 or transmit (595) an indication of the paging delivery mode to the third terminal device 130. In some embodiments, after receiving the paging related condition message from thesecond terminal device 120 and the first terminal device 110, the first terminal device 110maydetermine the paging delivery mode and send the indication of the determined paging delivery mode towards the second terminal device 120 and thethird terminal device 130.

[0112] In an example, the first terminal device 110may send the indication of the determined paging delivery mode towards the second terminal device 120 via an E2E PC5-RRC message and towards the third terminal device 130 via an HBH PC5-RRC message. Alternatively, the first terminal device 110 may send the indication towards thethird terminal device 130 via an HBH PC5-RRC message and the third terminal device 130 forwards the indication towards the second terminal device 120 via an HBH PC5-RRC message.

[0113] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the first terminal device 110may apply implicit indication. For example, if thefirst terminal device 110 sends its paging related information towards thesecond terminal device 120, it means that the paging delivery mode A would be selected, otherwise, the paging delivery mode B / C would be selected.

[0114] According to the above example embodiments of the present disclosure, the  procedural text and signaling IE are updated inpaging for multi-hop relay. Thepaging delivery mode to be used can bedetermined at the relay terminal deviceside, intermediate terminal deviceside orremote terminal deviceside.

[0115] As mentioned above, in some embodiments, the paging delivery mode may be switched if a condition is met. FIGS. 6A-6B illustrates signaling charts 335A and 335B of example mode switch procedures according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The mode switch procedures as shown in FIGS. 6A-6B may be consider as examples of the mode switch procedure 335.

[0116] In some embodiments, mode switch may be triggered by the second terminal device 130. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 335A will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 335Ainvolves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120 and a third terminal device 130.

[0117] As shown in FIG. 6A, the second terminal device 120 may enter (635) into a connected state with the network device 140. If the second terminal device 120 enters into a connected state with thenetwork device 140, the second terminal device 120 may transmit (610) an indication that the second terminal device 120 is in the connected state with the network device 140 to the third terminal device 130 or transmit (620) the indication to the first terminal device 110.

[0118] In an example, after the HBH PC5-RRC connection between the second terminal device 120 and the third terminal device 130 is established and the second terminal device 120 accesses into RRC_CONNECTED state, the second terminal device 120may inform its RRC state towards the third terminal device 130 and the first terminal device 110. For example, the second terminal device 120may firstly send an E2E PC5-RRC message towards thefirst terminal device 110 and then send an HBH PC5-RRC message towards thethird terminal device 130 (as shown in steps 610 and 620) . Alternatively, the second terminal device 120may firstly send an HBH PC5-RRC message towards the third terminal device 130 and thereafter the third terminal device 130may send an HBH PC5-RRC message towards the first terminal device 110 (as shown in steps 610 and 625) .

[0119] After receiving the indication that the second terminal device 120 enters intothe connected state with the network device 140, the third terminal device 130may switch (615) the paging delivery mode to a first mode. In the first mode, the second terminal  device 120 performs paging occasion monitoring for the first and third terminal devices 110 and 130. In an example, if the third terminal device 130 is operating in thepaging delivery mode B or C, it may switch to the paging delivery mode A.

[0120] The first terminal device 110 may receive (625) an indication that the second terminal device 120 is in a connected state with the network device 140 from the third terminal device 130. After receiving the indication, the first terminal device 110 mayswitch (630) the paging delivery mode to the first mode. In an example, if the first terminal device 110 is operating in thepaging delivery mode C, it may switch to paging delivery mode A.

[0121] In some embodiments, the second terminal device 120may send a paging delivery mode switch request, together with its RRC state, towards the first terminal device 110 and the third terminal device 130.

[0122] In some embodiments, the mode switch may be triggered by the network device 140. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling chart 335B will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling chart 335B involves a first terminal device 110, a second terminal device 120, a third terminal device 130 and a network device 140.

[0123] As shown in FIG. 6B, the second terminal device 120 may enter (635) into a connected state with thenetwork device 140 and the second terminal device 120 maytransmit (640) device information about the first and third terminal devices 110 and 130 to the network device 140. The device information (which may be, for example, UE identity) may comprise at least one of: respective destination identification (which may be, for example, Destination Layer 2 ID) of the first and third terminal devices, respective Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identities (TMSI) of the first and third terminal devices, orrespective Radio Network Temporary Identifiers (RNTI) of the first and third terminal devices.

[0124] In an example, ifthe second terminal device 120 accesses into RRC_CONNECTED state, it may report the UE identitiesof the third terminal device 130and the first terminal device 110 towards the network device 140. For example, the UE identity can include at least one of the following: Destination Layer 2 ID, 5GS-TMSIor RNTI. It would be appreciated that only some examples of Xn signaling are provided here, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0125] If determining to switch a paging delivery mode for the first and third terminal devices, the network device 140 may transmit (645) , to the second terminal device 120, a switch indication of the paging delivery mode for the first and third terminal devices. In an example, if the network device 140determines to apply the paging delivery mode Afor both the third terminal device 130 and the first terminal device 110, the network device 140 mayindicate the paging delivery mode Atowards the RRC_CONNECTED second terminal device 120.

[0126] The second terminal device 120 then may transmit (650) , to the third terminal device 130, a switch request (also known as a paging delivery mode switch request) for the paging delivery mode for the first terminal device 110 and third terminal device 130. In an example, the second terminal device 120may send the paging delivery mode switch request towards thethird terminal device 130 to ask the third terminal device 130 to switch to the paging delivery mode A.

[0127] After receiving theswitch request, the third terminal device 130 may transmit (655) , to the second terminal device 120, a switch response (also known as a paging delivery mode switch response) for the paging delivery mode for the first and third terminal devices. In response to receiving the switch response, the second terminal device 120may transmit (660) , to the network device 140, a switch acknowledgement (also known as a paging delivery mode acknowledge) on the paging delivery mode for the first and third terminal devices. In an example, after receiving the paging delivery mode switch request, the third terminal device 130maysend the paging delivery mode switch response towards thesecond terminal device 120. The second terminal device 120may feedback the paging delivery mode acknowledge towards the network device 140.

[0128] The third terminal device 130 then may transmit (665) , to the first terminal device 110, a switch indication of the paging delivery mode for the first terminal device 110. In response to receiving the switch indication, the first terminal device 110 may perform the mode switch and transmit (670) , to the third terminal device 130, a switch acknowledgement on the paging delivery mode for the first terminal device 110.

[0129] After receiving the paging delivery mode switch request, the third terminal device 130maysend a paging delivery mode switch response towards the second terminal device 120. The second terminal device 120mayfeedback the paging delivery mode  acknowledge towards the network device 140.

[0130] In some further embodiments, the third terminal device 130may inform the first terminal device 110 to switch to the paging delivery mode A.

[0131] According to the above example embodiments of the present disclosure, paging for multi-hop relay is proposed, by which the procedural textis updated. If the relay terminal deviceis in RRC_CONNECTED state, it may take charge of PO monitoring of both the intermediate terminal deviceand the remote terminal device.
