Description

Paired RLM and BFD for mTRP ScenarioBACKGROUND

[0001] Wireless communication systems are rapidly growing in usage. In recent years, wireless devices such as smart phones and tablet computers have become increasingly sophisticated. In addition to supporting telephone calls, many mobile devices (e.g., user equipment devices or UEs) now provide access to the internet, email, text messaging, and navigation using the global positioning system (GPS) and are capable of operating sophisticated applications that utilize these functionalities. Telecommunications standards are evolving and part of this evolution is a higher capacity for a higher density of mobile broadband users, also supporting device-to-device, ultra-reliable, and massive machine communications, as well as lower latency and lower battery consumption.

[0002] A user equipment (UE) may connect to a network via a base station. The base station may control multiple transmission and reception points (TRPs) . The UE may operate in multi-TRP (mTRP) mode where the UE establishes and maintains a connection with multiple TRPs at the same time.

[0003] In some cases, multiple receive (multi-Rx) chain downlink (DL) reception at a UE may be beneficial. In some cases, such multi-Rx chain DL reception mechanisms may be used in Frequency Range 2 (FR2) (e.g., frequency bands from 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz and / or 52.6 GHz to 71 GHz (or beyond) ) . In such cases, it may be beneficial to introduce mechanisms for simultaneous DL reception from different directions with different quasi-colocation (QCL) TypeD  reference signals (RSs) on a single component carrier (e.g., that may be used with enhanced FR2-1 UEs or other UEs) .

[0004] It has been identified that there is a need to improve support for mTRP operation in certain situations, in particular for radio link monitoring (RLM) , beam failure detection (BFD) , and / or candidate beam detection (CBD) requirements; scheduling and / or measurement restrictions; transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state switching delay with dual TCI; and / or receive (Rx) timing difference between different directions (e.g., different QCL Type D RSs) .SUMMARY

[0005] Some example embodiments are related to an apparatus configured to communicate with one or more of a plurality of transmission and reception points (TRPs) and to operate in a multiple TRP (mTRP) mode, the apparatus having processing circuitry configured to receive at least one pair of reference signals (RSs) from different TRPs, where a first RS of the at least one pair of RSs is received from a first TRP and a second RS of the at least one pair of RSs is received from a second TRP, the at least one pair of RSs comprising radio link monitoring (RLM) reference signals (RLM-RSs) or beam failure detection (BFD) reference signals (BFD-RSs) and perform a RLM or BFD evaluation based on the received at least one pair of RSs.

[0006] Other example embodiments are related to an apparatus having processing circuitry configured to configure transceiver circuitry to transmit configuration information related to simultaneous reception of signals from multiple  transmission and reception points (TRPs) to a user equipment (UE) , wherein the configuration information indicates that the UE should operate in multiple TRP (mTRP) mode and that the UE should perform RLM and / or BFD evaluations based on at least one pair of reference signals (RSs) from different TRPs, where a first RS of the at least one pair of RSs is received from a first TRP and a second RS of the at least one pair of RSs is received from a second TRP, the at least one pair of RSs comprising radio link monitoring (RLM) reference signals (RLM-RSs) and / or beam failure detection (BFD) reference signals (BFD-RSs) ; and monitor for feedback signals from the UE based on RLM and BFD evaluations performed by the UE based on the at least one pair of RSs.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0016] The example embodiments may be further understood with reference to the following description and the related appended drawings, wherein like elements are provided with the same reference numerals. The example embodiments relate to using paired reference signals (RSs) for radio link monitoring (RLM) and beam failure detection (BFD) in mTRP scenarios.

[0017] The example embodiments are described with regard to a user equipment (UE) . However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the  hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate type of electronic component.

[0018] The example embodiments are also described with regard to a fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) network and a next generation node B (gNB) . However, reference to a 5G NR network and a gNB is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any appropriate type of network (e.g., 5G Advanced, 6G, etc. ) and base station.

[0019] The gNB may be configured with multiple transmission and reception points (TRPs) . Throughout this description, a TRP generally refers to a set of components configured to transmit and / or receive a beam. In some embodiments, multiple TRPs may be deployed locally at the gNB. For example, the gNB may include multiple antenna arrays / panels that are each configured to generate a different beam. In other embodiments, multiple TRPs may be deployed at various different locations and connected to the gNB via a backhaul connection. For example, multiple small cells may be deployed at different locations and connected to the gNB. However, these examples are merely provided for illustrative purposes. TRPs are configured to be adaptable to a wide variety of different conditions and deployment scenarios. Thus, any reference to a TRP being a particular network component or multiple TRPs being deployed in a particular arrangement is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The TRPs described herein may represent any type of network component configured to transmit and / or receive a beam.

[0020] In addition, each gNB may support one or more cells. Throughout this description, the term "source cell" may refer to a cell operated by a source gNB. Similarly, the term "target cell" may refer to a cell operated by a target gNB. Since each gNB may support one or more cells, there may be a scenario in which multiple target cells are associated with the same target gNB. The UE may communicate with a cell over the air via a TRP. Due to the relationship between a TRP and a cell, the terms "TRP" and "cell" may be used interchangeably. For instance, in some examples, a "target cell" and a "target TRP" may be used interchangeably to generally refer to the same connection and / or node.

[0021] The UE may perform measurements on one or more neighbor cells using a specific downlink reference signal, e.g., a signal synchronization block (SSB) or a channel state information (CSI) -reference signal (RS) . The measurements may be based on SSB, CSI-RS or any other appropriate downlink resource. The measurement metric may be L1-reference signal received power (RSRP) , L1-signal interference-to-noise ratio (SINR) , L1-reference signal received quality (RSRQ) or any other appropriate type of metric. However, any reference to a specific type of measurement, reference signal or metric is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may apply to any appropriate type of measurement, reference signal or metric.

[0022] The example embodiments describe operations for a user equipment (UE) to perform RLM and BFD evaluations in mTRP mode. The UE may be configured to communicate with one or more of a plurality of transmission and reception points  (TRPs) and to operate in mTRP mode. The UE may comprise processing circuitry configured to receive at least one pair of reference signals (RSs) from different TRPs, where a first RS of the at least one pair of RSs is received from a first TRP and a second RS of the at least one pair of RSs is received from a second TRP. The at least one pair of RSs may include radio link monitoring (RLM) reference signals (RLM-RSs) and / or beam failure detection (BFD) reference signals (BFD-RSs) . The UE may perform a RLM and / or BFD evaluation based on the received at least one pair of RSs. That is, the UE performs the RLM and / or BFD evaluation based on paired reference signals rather than a single RS.

[0023] Fig. 1 shows an example network arrangement 100 according to various example embodiments. The example network arrangement 100 includes a UE 110. The UE 110 may be any type of electronic component that is configured to communicate via a network, e.g., mobile phones, tablet computers, desktop computers, smartphones, phablets, embedded devices, wearables, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, etc. An actual network arrangement may include any number of UEs being used by any number of users. Thus, the example of a single UE 110 is merely provided for illustrative purposes.

[0024] The UE 110 may be configured to communicate with one or more networks. In the example of the network arrangement 100, the network with which the UE 110 may wirelessly communicate is a 5G NR radio access network (RAN) 120. However, the UE 110 may also communicate with other types of networks (e.g., sixth generation (6G) RAN, 5G cloud RAN, a next generation RAN (NG-RAN) , a long-term evolution (LTE) RAN, a legacy cellular network, a wireless local area network  (WLAN) , etc. ) and the UE 110 may also communicate with networks over a wired connection. With regard to the example embodiments, the UE 110 may establish a connection with the 5G NR RAN 120. Therefore, the UE 110 may have at least a 5G NR chipset to communicate with the 5G NR RAN 120.

[0025] The 5G NR RAN 120 may be a portion of a cellular network that may be deployed by a network carrier (e.g., Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. ) . The 5G NR RAN 120 may include base stations or access nodes (Node Bs, eNodeBs, HeNBs, eNBS, gNBs, gNodeBs, macrocells, microcells, small cells, femtocells, etc. ) that are configured to send and receive traffic from UEs that are equipped with the appropriate cellular chip set.

[0026] In the network arrangement 100, the 5G NR RAN 120 deploys a gNB 120A. The gNB 120A may be configured with multiple TRPs. Each TRP may represent one or more components configured to transmit and / or receive a signal. In some embodiments, multiple TRPs may be deployed locally at the gNB 120A. In other embodiments, multiple TRPs may be distributed at different locations and connected to the gNB 120A via a backhaul connection. For example, multiple small cells may be deployed at different locations and connected to the gNB 120A.

[0027] Any association procedure may be performed for the UE 110 to connect to the 5G NR RAN 120. For example, as discussed above, the 5G NR RAN 120 may be associated with a particular cellular provider where the UE 110 and / or the user thereof has a contract and credential information (e.g., stored on a SIM card) . Upon detecting the presence of the 5G NR RAN 120, the UE 110 may transmit the corresponding credential information to associate with the 5G NR RAN 120. More specifically, the UE 110 may associate with a specific base station, e.g., the gNB 120A.

[0028] The network arrangement 100 also includes a cellular core network 130, the Internet 140, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) 150, and a network services backbone 160. The cellular core network 130 may refer to an interconnected set of components that manages the operation and traffic of the cellular network. It may include the evolved packet core (EPC) and / or the 5G core (5GC) . The cellular core network 130 also manages the traffic that flows between the cellular network and the Internet 140. The IMS 150 may be generally described as an architecture for delivering multimedia services to the UE 110 using the IP protocol. The IMS 150 may communicate with the cellular core network 130 and the Internet 140 to provide the multimedia services to the UE 110. The network services backbone 160 is in communication either directly or indirectly with the Internet 140 and the cellular core network 130. The network services backbone 160 may be generally described as a set of components (e.g., servers, network storage arrangements, etc. ) that implement a suite of services that may be used to extend the functionalities of the UE 110 in communication with the various networks.

[0029] Fig. 2 shows an example UE 110 according to various example embodiments. The UE 110 will be described with regard to the network arrangement 100 of Fig. 1. The UE 110 may include a processor 205, a memory arrangement 210, a display device 215, an input / output (I / O) device 220, a transceiver 225 and other components 230. The other components 230 may include, for example, an audio input device, an audio output device, a power supply, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the UE 110 to other electronic devices, etc.

[0030] The processor 205 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines of the UE 110. For example, the engines may include a mTRP engine 235. The mTRP engine 235 may perform various operations related to mTRP operation. In 5G NR, a unified transmission configuration indicator (TCI) framework is intended to facilitate streamlined mTRP operation. To provide some general examples, the mTRP engine 235 may perform operations such as, but not limited to, dynamically switching between mTRP mode and sTRP mode, updating a CC-group for mTRP operation and determining a default downlink beam / TCI-state for mTRP PDSCH reception.

[0031] The plurality of engines of the UE 110 may also include a measurement engine 245. The measurement engine 245 may perform operations including determining whether L1 measurements are colliding with L3 measurements. When such a collision is determined, some measurement results for RSs in a resource set may not be synchronized with measurement results for other RSs in the resource set. The measurement engine 245 may implement operations to, for example, omit certain measurement results from the measurement report or notify the  network as to the whether some or all of the measurement results included in the measurement report are current or were determined in a previous measurement occasion. The measurement engine 245 may also perform measurements of radio link quality of paired RLM and BFD reference signals and compare the measurements to predefined thresholds.

[0032] The above referenced engines 235 and 245 being applications (e.g., a program) executed by the processor 205 is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The functionality associated with the engines 235 and 245 may also be represented as a separate incorporated component of the UE 110 or may be a modular component coupled to the UE 110, e.g., an integrated circuit with or without firmware. For example, the integrated circuit may include input circuitry to receive signals and processing circuitry to process the signals and other information. The engine may also be embodied as one application or separate applications. In addition, in some UEs, the functionality described for the processor 205 is split among two or more processors such as a baseband processor and an applications processor. The example embodiments may be implemented in any of these or other configurations of a UE.

[0033] The memory arrangement 210 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the UE 110. The display device 215 may be a hardware component configured to show data to a user while the I / O device 220 may be a hardware component that enables the user to enter inputs. The display device 215 and the I / O device 220 may be separate components or integrated together such as a touchscreen.

[0034] The transceiver 225 may be a hardware component configured to establish a connection with the 5G NR-RAN 120, an LTE-RAN (not pictured) , a legacy RAN (not pictured) , a WLAN (not pictured) , etc. Accordingly, the transceiver 225 may operate on a variety of different frequencies or channels (e.g., set of consecutive frequencies) . The transceiver 225 includes circuitry configured to transmit and / or receive signals (e.g., control signals, data signals) . Such signals may be encoded with information implementing any one of the methods described herein. The processor 205 may be operably coupled to the transceiver 225 and configured to receive from and / or transmit signals to the transceiver 225. The processor 205 may be configured to encode and / or decode signals (e.g., signaling from a base station of a network) for implementing any one of the methods described herein.

[0035] Fig. 3 shows an example base station 300 according to various example embodiments. The base station 300 may represent the gNB 120A or any other type of access node through which the UE 110 may establish a connection and manage network operations.

[0036] The base station 300 may include a processor 305, a memory arrangement 310, an input / output (I / O) device 315, a transceiver 320, multiple TRPs 330 and other components 325. The other components 325 may include, for example, an audio input device, an audio output device, a battery, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the base station 300 to other electronic devices and / or power sources, TxRUs, transceiver chains, antenna elements, antenna panels, etc.

[0037] As indicated above, in some scenarios, the multiple TRPs 330 may be deployed locally at the base station 300. In other scenarios, one or more of the multiple TRPs 330 may be deployed at physical locations remote from the base station 300 and connected to the base station via a backhaul connection. The base station 300 may be configured to control the multiple TRPs 330 and perform operations such as, but not limited to, assigning resources, configuring reference signals, implementing beam management techniques, etc.

[0038] The processor 305 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines for the base station 300. For example, the engines may include a mTRP engine 335. The mTRP engine 335 may perform various operations related to mTRP operation. To provide some general examples, the mTRP engine 335 may perform operations such as, but not limited to, transmitting a signal to trigger the UE 110 to operate in mTRP mode, transmitting information to update a CC-group for mTRP operation and indicating a default downlink beam / TCI-state for mTRP PDSCH reception.

[0039] The plurality of engines for the base station 300 may also include a measurement processing engine 345. The measurement reporting engine 345 may perform operations including receiving and processing measurement reports from a UE and performing beam management in reliance thereon.

[0040] The above noted engines 335 and 345 being applications (e.g., a program) executed by the processor 305 is only an example. The functionality associated with the engines 335 and 345 may also be represented as a separate incorporated component of the base station 300 or may be a modular component coupled to the base station 300, e.g., an  integrated circuit with or without firmware. For example, the integrated circuit may include input circuitry to receive signals and processing circuitry to process the signals and other information. In addition, in some base stations, the functionality described for the processor 305 is split among a plurality of processors (e.g., a baseband processor, an applications processor, etc. ) . The example embodiments may be implemented in any of these or other configurations of a base station.

[0041] The memory arrangement 310 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the base station 300. The I / O device 315 may be a hardware component or ports that enable a user to interact with the base station 300.

[0042] The transceiver 320 may be a hardware component configured to exchange data with the UE 110 and any other UEs in the network arrangement 100. The transceiver 320 may operate on a variety of different frequencies or channels (e.g., set of consecutive frequencies) . Therefore, the transceiver 320 may include one or more components to enable the data exchange with the various networks and UEs. The transceiver 320 includes circuitry configured to transmit and / or receive signals (e.g., control signals, data signals) . Such signals may be encoded with information implementing any one of the methods described herein. The processor 305 may be operably coupled to the transceiver 320 and configured to receive from and / or transmit signals to the transceiver 320. The processor 305 may be configured to encode and / or decode signals (e.g., signaling from a UE) for implementing any one of the methods described herein.

[0043] As previously mentioned, wireless communications, involve measurement and reporting of various channel and communication metrics. The relevant wireless standards, such as the 3GPP standards, have introduced techniques for scheduling restriction and measurement restriction requirements. When a UE is operating in mTRP mode, the UE is able to receive different beams from different TRPs simultaneously. It has been identified that there is a need to improve support for mTRP operation in certain situations, in particular for radio link monitoring (RLM) and beam failure detection (BFD) .

[0044] For example, issues related to scheduling restriction and measurement restriction requirements for mTRP operation are shown below:

[0045] ● The CSI-RS (channel state information - reference signal) is not in a CSI-RS resource set with repetition ON.

[0046] ● The CSI-RS has same QCL source as the active Transmission Configuration Information (TCI) state of one of the (Physical Downlink Shared Channels (PDSCHs) and has different QCL-TypeD from the other PDSCH.

[0047] ● The CSI-RS and both of the PDSCHs are on the same orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol (s) .

[0048] ● For Future Study: The CSI-RS and only one of the PDSCHs with different QCLed typeD are on the same OFDM symbol (s)

[0049] ● Resources of the active TCI states for the two PDSCHs have been reported as a resource group in  Rel-17 group-based Reference Signal Reserved Power (RSRP) report.

[0050] ● For Future Study -how to capture UE is activated with multi-Rx operation

[0051] As disclosed herein, for multi-RX support, a UE may support measurement and reporting functionalities to measure and report on multiple received beams, for example on a pair of beams received simultaneously. Fig. 4 shows an example system diagram illustrative of a device simultaneously receiving beams from two different cells, according to various example embodiments. In Fig. 4, a device (such as a UE) 410 simultaneously receives a beam 406 (PDSCH 1) from a first cell 402 (TRP1) and a beam 408 (PDSCH 2) from a second cell 404 (TRP2) . As shown in Fig. 4, a CSI-RS1 reference signal 409, which may be a QCLed typeD signal with an active DCI of PDSCH 1, is used for L1 measurement. This L1 measurement only measures the quality of a single link. The CSI-RS may collide with the PDSCH 1 and PDSCH 2 in the time domain. In the legacy situation, RLM or BFD measurements would be performed only on one link, not on both. The beam used to receive the PDSCH 1 and the beam used to receive the CSI-RS for the L1 measurement may not be the same beam.

[0052] Although two TRPs are shown in FIG. 4 for convenience, there may be more than two TRPs and accordingly, more than two beams received by the UE.

[0053] There may be advantages or reasons to include both PDSCH 1 and PDSCH 2. For example, the CSI-RS for L1 measurement (e.g., RLM or BFD) may use the best individual Rx  beam for evaluation instead of using the best paired Rx beams for PDSCH reception. But if both PDSCH 1 and 2 are scheduled on the same time resource, then the UE has to use the same Rx beam for RLM / BFD and PDSCH1 as shown in Fig. 4.

[0054] In the legacy RLM evaluation, it was defined that when the downlink radio link quality on all the configured RLM-RS resources is worse than (or below) a first threshold value (such as Qout) , Layer 1 of the UE shall send an out-of-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers. A layer 3 filter shall be applied to the out-of-sync indications as specified in 3GPP Technical Specification (TS) 38.331 [2] . On the other hand, when the downlink radio link quality on at least one of the configured RLM-RS resources is better than (or above) a second threshold (such as Qin) , layer 1 of the UE shall send an in-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers. This link may then be recovered. A layer 3 filter shall be applied to the in-sync indications as specified in 3GPP TS 38.331 [2] .

[0055] In the legacy BFD evaluation, it was defined that:

[0056] When the radio link quality on all the RS resoures in set is worse than Qout_LR,layer 1 of the UE shall  send a beam failure instance indication to the higher layers

[0057] Fig. 5 shows an example system diagram illustrative of a device (such as a UE) 510 simultaneously receiving a pair of beams 506A and 506B from a first cell 502 (TRP1) and a pair of beams 508A and 508B from a second cell 504 (TRP2) . As shown in Fig. 5, a legacy BFD RS 512 and a legacy BFD RS 514 may be sent from TRP1 502 and TRP2 504 respectively. Although two TRPs are shown in FIG. 5 for convenience, there may be more than two TRPs and accordingly, more than two pairs of beams received by the UE. There are potential problems or issues  with the legacy RLM and BFD evaluations.

[0058] For example, the individual RLM or BFD (i.e., the RLM or BFD on a single link) evaluation cannot efficiently indicate the paired link quality (with paired Rx beams) since the legacy RLM and BFD may only indicate the individual beam reception condition. As seen in Fig. 5, the beam 506A will be used for the legacy BFD RS 512 and the beam 506B will be used for the legacy BFD RS 514. In some cases, the beam 506A may be the best individual beam for TRP1 reception and the beam 508A may be the best individual beam for TRP2 reception, but beams 506B and 508B may be the best paired beams for TRP1 and TRP2 simultaneous reception. For example, in cases of interference due to a small degree of separation between the beams, beams 506B and 508B may be better than beams 506A and 506B, even though beams 506A and 506B are better individual links.

[0059] In a mTRP mDCI (multi-Downlink Control Information) case, the PDCCH (Physical Downlink Control Channel) and PDSCH signals may be simultaneously scheduled from TRP1 and TRP2, but the legacy BFD and RLM cannot reflect the simultaneous reception quality from TRP1 and TRP2. Thus, if it is desired to receive beams from both TRP1 and TRP2 (such as beams 506A and 508A) , then the individual legacy RLM and BFD cannot indicate whether the paired link is good or not, but may only indicate whether the individual link is good or not.

[0060] One manner to improve the RLM and BFS evaluations in a mTRP scenario is to introduce a new feature of paired RLM or BFD reference signals (RSs) . That is, a pair of RSs is used rather than an individual RS. An advantage is that the use of paired RLM or BFD RSs reflects the actual paired link quality when multi-Rx beams are used by the UE. In addition, the  scheduling and measurement restrictions for RLM / BFD may be reduced.

[0061] The new paired RLM / BFD design may include a new RS pair design and a new evaluation interval design. In addition, there may be a new corresponding signaling design, and a new scheduling and measurement restriction design.

[0062] For example, in some example embodiments, a new paired RLM / BFD design includes paired radio link monitoring in a mTRP scenario. Fig. 6 shows an example flow diagram illustrative of a paired radio link monitoring (RLM) process using one or more pairs of RLM reference signals to perform an example out of sync (OOS) evaluation in mTRP mode, according to various example embodiments.

[0063] As seen in Fig. 6, in the case of mTRP plus either single DCI (sDCI) or mDCI, the RLM evaluation process 600 may be performed on a pair of RLM-RSs (RLM-RS1 and RLM-RS2) , where RLM-RS1 and RLM-RS2 are transmitted from different TRPs and received by a UE, such as UE 110 (610) . In some example embodiments, the UE may have previously received configuration information from a base station (such as gNB 120A) , where the configuration information indicates to the UE to operate in mTRP mode and / or to perform RLM evaluation based on paired RLM-RSs (605) . In addition, in some example embodiments, another dimension may be added to the RLM evaluation, where the UE may be configured with multiple pairs of RLM-RSs, e.g., pair 1: RS1+RS2 and pair 2: RS3+RS4, pair 3: RS5+RS6, etc. In the paired RLM evaluation, the OOS (out of sync) evaluation criteria could include multiple evaluation options.

[0064] For example, as seen in Fig. 6, the UE determines if there is one RS pair or there are multiple pairs of RSs (620) .  If only one RS pair is used for paired RLM (625) , and the downlink radio link quality on at least one RS in the RLM-RS pair is worse than (or below) a first threshold (such as Qout) (630) , then layer 1 of the UE shall send an out-of-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers (640) . In another embodiment, if multiple RS pairs are used for the paired RLM evaluation (650) , and if the downlink radio link quality on at least one RS in a RLM-RS pair is worse than (or below) the first threshold (such as Qout) , then that pair of RL-RS is marked as "not good" or "worse than Qout" and is designated as not acceptable (660) . The UE then performs 660 for all of the other RS pairs (665) . The UE then determines if all pairs of RLM-RSs are "not good" or "worse than Qout" or not acceptable (670) . Only when the downlink radio link quality on all the configured RLM-RS pairs are "worse than Qout" (not acceptable) , then layer 1 of the UE shall send an out-of-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers (680) . In other example embodiments, if multiple RS pairs are used for paired RLM, when the downlink radio link quality on both RSs in a RLM-RS pair is worse than (or below) the first threshold (Qout) , then that pair of RL-RS is marked as "worse than Qout" (not acceptable) (660) . Only when the downlink radio link quality on all of the configured RLM-RS pairs is "worse than Qout" (not acceptable) , layer 1 of the UE shall send an out-of-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers (680) .

[0065] Fig. 7 shows an example flow diagram illustrative of a paired radio link monitoring (RLM) process using one or more pairs of RLM reference signals to perform an example In Sync evaluation in mTRP mode, according to various example embodiments.

[0066] In the paired RLM evaluation, the In Sync evaluation process 700 may also include multiple evaluation options. The In Sync evaluation process 700 may be performed on a pair of RLM-RSs (RLM-RS1 and RLM-RS2) , where RLM-RS1 and RLM-RS2 are transmitted from different TRPs and received by a UE, such as UE 110 (710) . In some example embodiments, the UE may have previously received configuration information from a base station (such as gNB 120A) , where the configuration information indicates to the UE to operate in MTRP mode and / or to perform RLM evaluation based on paired RLM-RSs (705) . This may be the same pair of RLM-RSs and the same configuration information received above in 605 and 610, or it may be a different pair of RLM-RSs and / or configuration information.

[0067] Referring to Fig. 7, in some example embodiments, the UE determines if there is one RS pair or there are multiple pairs of RSs (720) . if only one RS pair is used for paired RLM (725) , when the downlink radio link quality on both of the configured RLM-RSs in this RLM-RS pair is better than (above) a second threshold (such as Qin) (730) , then layer 1 of the UE shall send an in-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers (740) . In other example embodiments, if multiple RS pairs are used for the paired RLM (750) , when the downlink radio link quality on both RSs in a RLM-RS pair is better than (above) the second threshold (such as Qin) , then this pair of RL-RSs is marked as "good" or "better than Qin" or otherwise designated as acceptable (760) . The UE then determines if at least one pair is "good" or "better than Qin" or acceptable (770) . When the downlink radio link quality on at least one of the configured RLM-RS pairs is "better than Qin" (acceptable) , layer 1 of the UE shall send an in-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers (780) . If not, the UE repeats 760 as  necessary for the other pairs of RLM-RSs. In another embodiment, if multiple RS pairs are used for paired RLM, and the downlink radio link quality on at least one RS in a RLM-RS pair is better than (above) the second threshold (Qin) , then that pair of RL-RSs is marked as "better than Qin" (760) (acceptable) , and when the downlink radio link quality on at least one of the configured RLM-RS pairs is "better than Qin" (acceptable) (770) , layer 1 of the UE shall send an in-sync indication for the cell to the higher layers (780) .

[0068] Fig. 8 shows an example flow diagram illustrative of a paired beam failure detection (BFD) process 800 using one or more pairs of BFD reference signals to perform an example BFD evaluation in mTRP mode, according to various example embodiments. In some example embodiments, a new paired RLM / BFD design includes paired BFD (beam failure detection) in a mTRP scenario. In the case of mTRP plus either single DCI (sDCI) or mDCI, the BFD evaluation may be performed on a pair of BFD-RSs (BFD-RS1 and BFD-RS2) , where BFD-RS1 and BFD-RS2 may be transmitted from different TRPs and received by a UE, such as UE 110 (810) . In some example embodiments, the UE may have previously received configuration information from a base station (such as gNB 120A) , where the configuration information indicates to the UE to operate in mTRP mode and / or to perform RLM evaluation based on paired RLM-RSs (805) . In other example embodiments, a UE may be configured with multiple pairs of BFD-RSs, e.g., pair 1: RS1+RS2, pair 2: RS3+RS4, pair 3: RS5+RS6, etc. In this case of paired BFD signals, the new BFD evaluation criteria could include multiple evaluation options.

[0069] For example, as seen in Fig. 8, the UE determines if  there is one RS pair or there are multiple pairs of RSs (820) . If only one RS pair is used for paired BFD (825) , when the radio link quality on at least one RS in this BFD-RS pair is worse than (or below) a threshold (such as Qout_LR) (830) , then layer 1 of the UE shall send a beam failure instance indication to the higher layers (840) . In other example embodiments, if multiple RS pairs are used for paired BFD (850) , when the downlink radio link quality on at least one RS in a BFD-RS pair is worse than (or below) the threshold (Qout_LR) , then that pair of BFD-RSs is marked as "worse than Qout_LR" or otherwise designated as not acceptable (860) . The UE then performs 860 for all of the other RS pairs (865) . The UE then determines if all pairs of RLM-RSs are "not good" or "worse than Qout" (not acceptable) (870) . Only when the downlink radio link quality on all the configured BFD-RS pairs is "worse than Qout_LR" (not acceptable) , layer 1 of the UE shall send a beam failure instance indication to the higher layers (880) . In other example embodiments, if multiple RS pairs are used for paired BFD, when the downlink radio link quality on both RSs in a BFD-RS pair is worse than (or below) the threshold (Qout_LR) , then this pair of RL-RS is marked as "worse than Qout_LR" (not acceptable) (860) , and only when the downlink radio link quality on all the configured BFD-RS pairs are "worse than Qout_LR" (not acceptable) does layer 1 of the UE send a beam failure instance indication to the higher layers (880) .

[0070] Fig. 9 shows an example signaling design that may be used to implement the paired RLM / BFD design for mTRP disclosed herein. In particular, this new signaling design may be included in the 3GPP TS 38.331. New fields 910 and 920 would be added as shown in Fig. 9 for the BFD pair and the RLM pair.  In addition, the signaling may include an identification of the RLM or BFD RS pair (such as RadioLinkMonitoringRSPair-Id or failureDetectionResourcePairs) and an identification of each RS in the RLM or BFD RS pair (such as RadioLinkMonitoringRS-Id) .

[0071] In particular, one new field 910 is shown as failureDetectionResourcePairsToAddModList-r19 SEQUENCE (SIZE (1. . maxNrofFailureDetectionResourcePairs) ) OF RadioLinkMonitoringRSPair OPTIONAL, failureDetectionResourcePairsToReleaseList-r19 SEQUENCE (SIZE (1. . maxNrofFailureDetectionResourcePairs) ) OF RadioLinkMonitoringRSPair-Id OPTIONAL, and another new field 920 is shown as RadioLinkMonitoringRSPair-r19 : : = SEQUENCE {radioLinkMonitoringRSPair-Id RadioLinkMonitoringRSPair-Id, radioLinkMonitoringRS1-Id RadioLinkMonitoringRS-Id, radioLinkMonitoringRS2-Id RadioLinkMonitoringRS-Id, purpose ENUMERATED {beamFailure, rlf, both} , detectionResource CHOICE {ssb-Index SSB-Index, csi-RS-Index NZP-CSI-RS-ResourceId} , .

[0072] A new scheduling and measurement restriction design may also be implemented. For example, in one embodiment, the scheduling restriction on CSI-RS for paired RLM or paired BFD may be disabled if each of the following conditions may be met: the CSI-RS is not in a CSI-RS resource set with repetition ON; the CSI-RS has the same QCL source as the active TCI state of one of the PDSCHs and has different QCL-TypeD from the other PDSCH; the CSI-RS and only one of the PDSCHs with different QCLed typeD are on the same OFDM symbol (s) ; resources of the active TCI states for the two PDSCHs have been reported as a resource group in a Rel-17  group-based RSRP report, and the UE is activated with multi-Rx operation.

[0073] In other example embodiments, the measurement restriction on CSI-RS for paired RLM or paired BFD may be disabled if each of the following conditions may be met: both CSI-RSs are not in any CSI-RS resource set with repetition ON; the two CSI-RS resources are paired resource for RLM or BFD; and the UE is activated with multi-Rx operation.

[0074] By using paired RLM or BFD reference signals (RSs) , as disclosed herein, the RLM and BFS evaluations in a mTRP scenario may be improved. That is, by using a pair of RSs rather than an individual RS, the actual paired link quality is shown when multi-Rx beams are used by the UE. In addition, the scheduling and measurement restrictions for RLM / BFD may be reduced.
