[0011] Overview

[0012] Throughout the specification, when a part is described as "comprising or including" a component, it does not exclude another component but may further include another component unless otherwise stated.

[0013] The disclosed technology pertains to multilevel antimicrobial and pest-repellent materials comprised of balloon-like capsules featuring a shell with antimicrobial properties. These properties include "contact-killing" capabilities against a wide range of microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, molds, and spores. Additionally, the shell exhibits "anti-adhesion" characteristics that inhibit the attachment of these microorganisms, thereby preventing biofilm formation and surface biofouling. The materials may also possess self-cleaning properties, enhancing their effectiveness in maintaining clean surfaces.

[0014] The disclosed technology encompasses capsules or microballoons with diameters ranging from 0.35 to 20 microns, featuring a thin shell made from polymeric, inorganic, or a combination of both materials, with a thickness less than 0.2 times the diameter. The shell's properties, including its permeability, regulate the release rate of encapsulated active ingredients, which may include pest-repellent and antimicrobial formulations. These formulations can consist of synthetic compounds such as DEET, picaridin, and natural essential oils like lemon eucalyptus and neem. The capsules may exhibit antimicrobial properties, providing contact-killing or anti-adhesion effects against various microorganisms. Additionally, the capsules can be suspended in various carrier vehicles, including water, oil, or solvents, and applied as a thin layer using methods such as spraying or dip-coating. This design allows for prolonged dispensing of repellent and antimicrobial effects, making them suitable for incorporation into various materials or surfaces to enhance their pest-repellent and antimicrobial properties.

[0015] The capsules, also referred to as microballoons, encapsulate a pest repellent formulation composed of either synthetic repellents, natural repellents, or a combination of both. The encapsulation process enables a controlled release of the stored pest-repellent formulation, providing extended effectiveness against targeted insects, including bed bugs, lice, ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, and other insects and arthropods.

[0016] The resulting capsules, or microballoons, can be suspended in various carrier vehicles, including fluids such as water, oil, or solvents, and this suspension can be applied as a thin layer using methods such as spraying, brushing, dip-coating, spin-coating, rolling, or casting. Alternatively, one or more active ingredients can be incorporated into a carrier vehicle.

[0017] The disclosed carrier vehicles encompass a range of formulations that may include lipid-based suspensions, emulsions, or other suitable mediums that facilitate the effective delivery of the encapsulated pest repellent. These formulations are designed to enhance the stability and release properties of the active ingredients while ensuring optimal application methods. The examples, described infra, describe specific examples of these carrier vehicles, such as lipid emulsions, surfactant-stabilized solutions, or other formulations that, according to design choice, may be utilized based on the example descriptions provided.

[0018] Additionally, active materials can be prepared or deposited on surfaces of the capsules or microballoons or incorporated into solid portions of the capsules or the microballoons' skin or wall to impart the materials with antimicrobial and pest repellent properties. This technology provides a versatile and effective approach to controlling the spread of diseases and illnesses caused by microorganisms and pests. It has the potential to be used in various settings, including homes, hospitals, schools, and public spaces, to enhance public health and safety.

[0019] In one non-limiting example, the capsules or microballoons are provided at a diameter in a range of 0.35 to 20 microns, and consist of a thin shell with thickness of less than 0.2 × the diameter. The thin shell may consist of polymer or inorganic material, or a mixture of polymer and inorganic materials. The thickness of the capsules or microballoons, combined with the permeability of the shell, governs the transport of the encapsulated active ingredients and their release rate.

[0020] In another non-limiting example, the polymer shell may be made of non-ionic and cationic polymers. The polymers may be selected from a range of materials including polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene glycol, poloxamers, and polyacrylamide non-ionic or low ionicity polymers and polyethylenimine, polyhexamethylene biguanide, poly (diallydimethyl-ammonium chloride) , polyquarternium, and chitosan cation polymers.

[0021] In another non-limiting example, the polymer shell may be made of inorganic oxides including, but not limited to, silica, alumina, titania, zinc oxides, copper oxides, silver oxides, and combinations thereof. In another non-limiting example, the polymer shell may be made of a mixture of polymer and inorganic materials, such as the above-described polymer and inorganic materials. In other non-limiting examples, the shell itself possesses antimicrobial properties of contact-killing against viruses, bacteria, fungi, moulds, and spores, or may possesses antimicrobial properties of anti-adhesion against bacteria, fungi, and moulds. In this configuration, the shell and stored content exhibits antimicrobial properties. By way of non-limiting example, the insect repellent formulation encapsulated by the shell may exhibit insect and / or pest repellent, and the shell exhibits contact-killing and anti-adhesion antimicrobial properties.

[0022] The capsules may be formed by lipophilic-hydrophilic properties of the polymer from which the capsules are formed. In that technique, the polymers will surround hydrophobic components to be encapsulated (i.e., essential oils, insect repellent) , which themselves form an emulsion in a water environment.

[0023] In another non-limiting example the capsule contains pest-repellent formulation or pest-repellent and antimicrobial formulation. The formulation may include N, Ndiethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) , picaridin, IR3535, and p-menthane-3, 8-diol synthetic compounds, and natural essential oils of lemon eucalyptus, neem, eucalyptus, citronella, oranges, lemon, citrus, thyme, sage, peppermint, rosemary, lavender, and geranium, DEET, p-metane-3, 8-diol, neem oil, oil of lemon eucalyptus with thyme oil, rosemary oil, citronella oil, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil.

[0024] The active materials may be carried within the capsules or microballoons in solution or as a suspension.

[0025] In another non-limiting example, the capsules or microballoons are formulated or fabricated to slowly dose the stored formulation for prolonged pest repellency. This allows prolonged dispensing of antimicrobial and pest repellency performance. Alternatively, the active substances may be fabricated for prolonged antimicrobial and pest repellency.

[0026] In another non-limiting example, the capsules or microballoons are suspended in water, oil, or solvent, and can be applied as a thin layer using methods such as spraying, brushing, dip-coating, spin-coating, rolling, or casting. In another non-limiting example, the capsules or microballoons are applied to a surface of target materials or objects to impart said materials or objects with antimicrobial and pest repellency properties. In another non-limiting example, the capsules or microballoons are incorporated into target materials or objects to impart said target materials or objects with antimicrobial and pest repellency properties.

[0027] Configuration

[0028] The disclosed technique provides antimicrobial and / or pest repellence to surfaces or target materials by using capsules or microballoons containing a solvent or vehicle with antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials suspended or dissolved in the solvent or vehicle. Similarly, the capsules or microballoons may be coated with the antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials or with the antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials carried by a vehicle. Additionally, the capsules or microballoons may have their material fabricated to incorporate antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials as a component of the capsule or microballoon shell.

[0029] The antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials used to coat the capsules or microballoons may be applied by dissolving or suspending the antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials in a vehicle, or the antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials may be coated onto the capsules or microballoons without the use of a vehicle. The coating can be used in combination with the solvent or vehicle containing antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials contained within the capsules or microballoons.

[0030] The capsules or microballoons can alternatively be coated with the antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials. Likewise, the capsules or microballoons can encapsulate the antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials, and be coated with the same or different antimicrobial and / or pest repellent materials.

[0031] Fig. 1 is a microscopic image showing a capsule suspension deposited on a glass slide.

[0032] Fig. 2 is a photographic image showing a comparison of formulation 2 and formulation 3 suspensions in water. The images show a comparison of formulations 2 and 3.

[0033] Fig. 3A and 3B are photographic images showing cotton fabrics coated with multilevel antimicrobial pest repellent material. Fig. 3A has formulation 2 applied and Fig. 3B has formulation 3 applied.

[0034] Fig. 4 is a photographic image showing the results of bed bug repellency test showing bed bugs on untreated paper (left) and treated paper (right) .

[0035] Examples

[0036] The following examples apply sample test formulations (formulations 1, 2, ... ) . It is noted that it is possible to implement the disclosed techniques using different methods, for example those described below, with different formulations. Accordingly, the specific techniques describe in the examples below, and the particular formulations are given as non-limiting examples of the technique and formulas.

[0037] The disclosed techniques were tested using different formulations, characterized by different repellants or antimicrobial agents, such as essential oils.

[0038] Example 1

[0039] A multilevel antimicrobial and pest repellent formulation 1 was prepared by adding 4.2 weight percent non-ionic polyvinyl alcohol, 1.0 weight percent polyethylenimine and 0.3 weight percent polyhexamethylene biguanide cationic polymers, 0.1 to 3.0 weight percent cold press neem oil (neem essential oil) in water. The mixture was vortex then homogenized under ultrasonication to produce dispersed polymer capsules containing the neem essential oil as shown in Fig. 1.

[0040] The formulation described in Example 1, can be further diluted 1: 2, 1: 10, and 1: 20 with water for different application purposes.

[0041] Example 2

[0042] A multilevel antimicrobial and pest repellent formulation 2 was prepared by adding 4.2 weight percent non-ionic polyvinyl alcohol, 1.0 weight percent polyethylenimine and 0.3 weight percent polyhexamethylene biguanide cationic polymers, 0.1 to 3.0 weight percent cold press neem oil and orange essential oil in water. The mixture was vortex then homogenized under ultrasonication to produce dispersed polymer capsules containing the neem oil and orange essential oil in water as shown in Fig. 2.

[0043] Example 3

[0044] A multilevel antimicrobial and pest repellent formulation 3 was prepared by adding 4.2 weight percent non-ionic polyvinyl alcohol, 1.0 weight percent polyethylenimine and 0.3 weight percent polyhexamethylene biguanide cationic polymers, 0.1 to 3.0 weight percent cold press neem oil and lavender essential oil in water. The mixture was vortex then homogenized under ultrasonication to produce dispersed polymer capsules containing the lavender essential oil and orange essential oil in water as shown in Fig. 2.

[0045] Example 4

[0046] Fig. 3A and 3B are photographic images showing cotton fabrics coated with multilevel antimicrobial pest repellent material. A multilevel antimicrobial and pest repellent formulation 2 and formulation 3 were applied to the cotton fabrics shown in Figs. 3A and 3B, and tested for bed bug repellency. Fig. 3A has formulation 2 applied and Fig. 3B has formulation 3 applied. The test involved placing ten bed bugs on untreated control paper, and their movement both towards or away from the treated fabric were observed and measured during a 4-hour period. The repellency was assessed by counting the number of bed bugs on treated fabric and untreated paper.

[0047] Table 1 shows the treated cotton fabrics repelled the bed bugs (i.e., 100%repellency) . This is an initial test. In practice, it is anticipated that less that 100%repellency will be achieved; however, this initial test demonstrates that the disclosed techniques, as applied to the sample insects and other invertebrate bugs exhibits a significant degree of efficacy. Table 1. Repellency test on cotton fabrics treated with formulation 2 and 3.

[0048] Example 5

[0049] A multilevel antimicrobial and pest repellent formulation 2 was tested for harborage choice test and it can be seen in Fig. 2 that the bed bugs preferred the untreated paper to the paper sprayed with 0.1 ml of formulation 2.

[0050] Example 6

[0051] A multilevel antimicrobial and pest repellent formulation 4 was prepared by adding 4.2 weight percent non-ionic polyvinyl alcohol, 1.0 weight percent polyethylenimine and 0.3 weight percent polyhexamethylene biguanide cationic polymers, 0.1 to 3.0 weight percent thyme essential oil. The mixture was vortex then homogenized under ultrasonication to produce dispersed polymer capsules containing thyme essential oil in water.
