AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current organ perfusion devices require manual monitoring and adjustment, leading to imprecision and inefficiencies in fluid flow, and are limited by the need for active healthcare provider intervention, which restricts the transport of organs like kidneys unaccompanied by air transport.

Method used

A system with a flow regulator valve that adjusts fluid flow based on renal resistance and a pressure dampener to maintain constant flow, independent of manual operation or control algorithms, ensuring precise and continuous organ perfusion.

Benefits of technology

This system extends the viable transport window for organs, maintaining their health and availability for donation by ensuring uniform cooling and metabolite flushing, reducing pulsation, and allowing for unaccompanied air transport.

Abstract

A transport container for transporting an organ (T), such as a kidney, at hypothermic temperatures. The transport container comprises an inner lid (40) and a canister (38) that can be filled with preservation fluid. The preservation fluid can be pumped from the canister to the organ through a cannula. A flow regulator valve (48) can release the preservation fluid from the fluid path into the transport container at a rate based on at least one organ parameter (such as renal resistance of the kidney), whereas the pump can operate at a rate independent of the at least one organ parameter. The transport container may further comprise a fill port (28) and a vent port in the inner lid, and an organ rest (18).
