AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current communication technologies face challenges in managing non-integer DRX cycles for extended reality services, leading to misalignment and inefficiencies in DRX subframe determination, particularly for XR applications like VR and AR, resulting in increased power consumption and scheduling latency.

Method used

A terminal device determines a non-integer DRX cycle configuration by calculating the index of a current subframe based on the DRX system frame number and subframe number, and aligns it with a reference subframe using a modified formula to ensure proper DRX group initiation, aligning both short and long DRX cycles.

Benefits of technology

This approach ensures all subframes can be utilized as DRX cycle starting points, enhancing PDCCH capacity and maintaining alignment between short and long DRX cycles, thereby reducing power consumption and latency in XR services.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for discontinuous reception. In a solution, a terminal device determines that a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle is used for a DRX group and a non-integer length of the DRX cycle is configured; determines an index of a current subframe based on a DRX system frame number (SFN) counter, SFN, and a subframe number; determines an index of a reference subframe at least based on a DRX start offset; in accordance with a determination that a distance between the index of the current subframe and the index of the reference subframe is about multiple times of the non-integer length of the DRX cycle, determines the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group.

[0031] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0032] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 100, a plurality of communication devices, including a terminal device 110 and a network device 120, can communicate with each other.

[0033] In the example of FIG. 1, the terminal device 110 may be a UE and the network device 120 may be a base station serving the UE. The serving area of the network device 120 may be called a cell 102.

[0034] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell 102, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the network device 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the terminal device 110 may be another device than a terminal device.

[0035] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the terminal device 110 operating as a UE and the network device 120 operating as a base station. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0036] In some example embodiments, if the terminal device 110 is a terminal device and the network device 120 is a network device, a link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the terminal device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the network device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0037] The communications in the communication environment 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio  (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0038] It should be noted that XR enhancement has been studied and specified and DRX enhancement is one of the XR enhancement features where a non-integer DRX cycle has been introduced. However, there are some remaining issues for DRX based on the current version of the specification. Thus, embodiments of the present disclosure would like to solve the remaining issues.

[0039] In the prior art, the media access control (MAC) entity may be configured by RRC with a DRX functionality that controls the UE′s PDCCH monitoring activity for the MAC entity′s C-RNTI (Cell-Radio Network Temporary Identifier) , CI-RNTI (identification of cancellation in the uplink) , CS-RNTI (Configured Scheduling RNTI) , INT-RNTI (Interruption RNTI) , SFI-RNTI (Slot Format Indication RNTI) , SP-CSI-RNTI (Semi-Persistent CSI RNTI) , TPC-PUCCH-RNTI (Transmit Power Control Physical Uplink Control Channel RNTI) , TPC-PUSCH-RNTI (Transmit Power Control Physical Uplink Shared Channel RNTI) , TPC-SRS-RNTI (TPC Sounding Reference Singal RNTI) , AI-RNTI (identification of the DCI carrying availability indication) , SL-RNTI (Sidelink RNTI) , SL-CS-RNTI (Sidelink CS RNTI) , and SL Semi-Persistent Scheduling V-RNTI.

[0040] RRC controls DRX operation by configuring the following parameters. drx-onDurationTimer defines the duration at the beginning of a DRX cycle. drx-NonIntegerShortCycle (optional) defines the Short DRX cycle whose length is not an integer. drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset (optional) defines the long DRX cycle and drx-StartOffset which defines the subframe where the long and short DRX cycle start when the length of the long DRX cycle and / or the short DRX cycle is not an integer. drx-TimeReferenceSFN (optional) defines the reference system frame number (SFN) used in determining the start time of DRX on durations when short and / or long DRX cycle is not an integer.

[0041] The following UE variable is used for the DRX operation if drx- NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset is configured. Herein, DRX_SFN_COUNTER defines the counter that increments when SFN changes to 0. This counter can be implemented with a maximum value of 65535.

[0042] In some implementations, the UE behaviours of XR DRX are specified as follows:

[0043] 1> if the drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset is configured:

[0044] 2> increment DRX_SFN_COUNTER by 1 in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to 0;

[0045] 2> if DRX is (re-) configured by RRC:

[0046] 3> set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 0 in the first symbol of the slot immediately after the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration;

[0047] 1> if the Short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is not configured, and [ (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-ShortCycle) = (drx-StartOffset) modulo (drx-ShortCycle) ; or

[0048] 1> if the Short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) +(SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = floor ( [ (drx-TimeReferenceSFN × 10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) :

[0049] 2> start drx-onDurationTimer for this DRX group after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe.

[0050] 1> if the long DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset is not configured, and [ (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-LongCycle) = drx-StartOffset; or

[0051] 1> if the long DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER ×10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) =floor ( [ (drx-TimeReferenceSFN × 10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) :

[0053] 4> start drx-onDurationTimer after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe.

[0054] The parameter drx-NonIntegerLongCycle in a non-integer number of ms (e.g.  ms25over3 corresponds to 25 / 3 ms, ms100over9 corresponds to 100 / 9 ms, and so on) and drx-StartOffset in multiples of 1 ms. If drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is configured, the value of drx-NonInetegerLongCycle shall be a multiple of the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle value. If drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset-r18 is configured, the UE shall ignore drx-LongCycleStartOffset. Example values of drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset-r18 are provided in below Table 1.

[0055] Table 1

[0056] According to the current communication specifications, starting DRX subframes for non-integer long DRX cycle and short DRX cycle is determined as follows.

[0057] ● floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo  (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = floor ( [ (drx-TimeReferenceSFN × 10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) )

[0058] ● floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = floor ( [ (drx-TimeReferenceSFN × 10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) )

[0059] Examples of subframes and offset mapping relationships based on the existing formula are shown in the example table 210 in FIG. 2A are given. In this example, it is assumed that the configured long DRX cycle is 25 / 2 ms and the configured short DRX cycle is 25 / 6 ms. The values in the table are to which the DRX offset of a subframe belongs, which is determined based on the left side (LHS) value of the current Technical Specification (TS) formula calculated based on the subframe index.

[0060] For a long DRX cycle, drx-StartOffset can be configured from 0 to 11. Subframe #0 and subframe #13 have the same LHS value 0, thus they are the starting subframe of drx-StartOffset = 0, and so on. For subframe #12, since the calculated LHS value is 12 but the allowed RHS configured value is from 0 to 11, subframe #12 would not be the starting subframe of any drx-StartOffset. embodiments of the present disclosure use ‘NA’ in the table to indicate that the subframe is invalid to be the starting subframe of the DRX cycle.

[0061] For the short DRX cycle in the table 210, there are have three columns separately for the drx-StartOffset values configured from 0 to 3, from 4 to 7, and from 8 to 11. Since for right side (RHS) values having (0 modulo drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) = (5 modulo drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) , drx-StartOffset = 5 has the same starting subframe as drx-StartOffset = 0, and so on. It should be noted that the RHS value is 4 for drx-StartOffset = 4, and the LHS value is also 4 for subframe #4 (marked by 201 in the table 210 in FIG. 2A) .

[0062] Another open issue is whether it is possible to configure a short non-integer DRX together with a long integer DRX cycle. To address this open issue, embodiments of the present disclosure give another example assuming the configured long DRX cycle is 25 ms and configured short DRX cycle is 25 / 3 ms in the example table 220 in FIG. 2B.

[0063] The embodiments of the present closure have the following observations for the existing formula.

[0064] ● When drx-StartOffset, which is from 0 to floor (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) -1, equals to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) , (marked by 201 in the table 210 in FIG. 2A) , the periodicity of short DRX cycle is not drx-NonIntegerShortCycle, because many subframes  cannot be used here (i.e. it is marked as ‘NA’ in the table 210 in FIG. 2A) .

[0065] ● For some configured drx-StartOffset values, for example, ‘9’ in the table, starting subframes of short DRX and long DRX are aligned in some cycles (marked by 202 in the table 210 in FIG. 2A) , but are not aligned in other cycles (marked by 203 in the table 210 in FIG. 2A) .

[0066] ● For some configured drx-StartOffset values, for example, ‘8’ and ‘9’ in the table 210 in FIG. 2A, adjacent drx-StartOffset values do not have adjacent starting subframes of short DRX in some cycles (marked by 204 in the table 210 in FIG. 2A) .

[0067] ● From the DRX formula's perspective, there is no additional issue to support configuring short non-integer DRX together with long integer DRX cycle. On the contrary, the misalignment issue between short DRX and long DRX does not happen when a long integer DRX cycle is used.

[0068] For the existing formula of short DRX, the inventors have observed that it has issues that:

[0069] ● When drx-StartOffset, which is from 0 to floor (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) -1, equals to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) , the periodicity of the short DRX cycle is not drx-NonIntegerShortCycle anymore. An unexpected DRX cycle happens.

[0070] ● For some configured drx-StartOffset values, starting subframes of short DRX and long DRX is not aligned in some cycles when drx-NonIntegerLongCycle is configured.

[0071] ● For some configured drx-StartOffset values, adjacent drx-StartOffset values do not have adjacent starting subframes of short DRX in some cycles.

[0072] ● From the DRX formula's perspective, there is no additional issue to support configuring short non-integer DRX together with long integer DRX cycle. On the contrary, the misalignment issue between short DRX and long DRX does not happen when a long integer DRX cycle is used.

[0073] To overcome the issues, embodiments of the present disclosure propose solutions for enhancements of the DRX cycle. A terminal device determines that a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle is used for a DRX group and a non-integer length of the DRX cycle is configured. The terminal device further determines an index of a current subframe based on a DRX system frame number (SFN) counter, SFN, and a subframe number. The terminal device further determines an index of a reference  subframe at least based on a DRX start offset. In accordance with a determination that a distance between the index of the current subframe and the index of the reference subframe is about multiple times of the non-integer length of the DRX cycle, determine the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group.

[0074] Reference is made to FIG. 3, which illustrates a signaling flow 300 of DRX in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 300 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the terminal device 110 and the network device 120.

[0075] In operation, the terminal device 110 determines 305 that a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle is used for a DRX group and a non-integer length of the DRX cycle is configured.

[0076] Then, the terminal device 110 determines 310 an index of a current subframe based on a DRX system frame number (SFN) counter (represented as “DRX_SFN_COUNTER” ) , SFN, and a subframe number (represented to as “subframe number” ) .

[0077] After the determination, the terminal device 110 determines 315 an index of a reference subframe at least based on a DRX start offset (represented as “drx-StartOffset” ) .

[0078] In accordance with a determination that a distance between the index of the current subframe and the index of the reference subframe is about multiple times of the non-integer length of the DRX cycle, the terminal device 110 determines 320 the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group.

[0079] After determining the starting subframe of the DRX group, the terminal device 110 may perform the DRX accordingly. In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group, the terminal device 110 starts a DRX on-duration timer after a DRX slot offset from a beginning of the current frame.

[0080] The inventors have observed that, mathematically, (Amodulo C = B modulo C) and ( (A-B) modulo C = 0) are equivalent, but (floor (X) = floor (Y) ) and (floor (X -Y) = 0) are not equivalent.

[0081] ● For the agreement of “at least use legacy formula and add floor operation” made in RAN2 #123bis meeting, where legacy formula is (X = Y) style and equivalent to (X -Y = 0) style, it is worth to study which is better between (floor (X) = floor (Y) ) and (floor (X -Y) = 0) .

[0082] Mathematically, (Amodulo C = B modulo C) and ( (A-B) modulo C = 0) are equivalent, but (floor (X) = floor (Y) ) and (floor (X -Y) = 0) are not equivalent. For the agreement of “At least use legacy formula and add floor operation” made in RAN2 #123bis meeting, where legacy formula is (X = Y) style and equivalent to (X -Y = 0) style, it is worth studying which is better between (floor (X) = floor (Y) ) and (floor (X -Y) = 0) . Such modifications may have different mapping tables. Meanwhile, the meaning of the modified formula is clear. ( (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number) is the index of the current subframe. (drx-StartOffset) is the index of the reference subframe. When the distance between the current subframe and reference subframe is about multiple times of the cycle, which is floor (distance modulo cycle) = 0, the current subframe is considered to be the starting subframe of a DRX cycle belonging to the reference subframe.

[0083] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform a floor operation on a result of a modulo operation of the distance and the non-integer length of the DRX cycle, where the distance between the current subframe and reference subframe is a dividend in the modulo operation, and the non-integer length of the DRX cycle is a divisor in the modulo operation. In accordance with a determination that a result of the floor operation is zero, the terminal device 110 may determine the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group.

[0084] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group in accordance with a determination of the following:

[0085] floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0, or

[0086] floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) - [drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0,

[0087] wherein:

[0088] floor () represents the floor operation,

[0089] modulo represent the modulo operation,

[0090] DRX_SFN_COUNTER represents the DRX SFN counter,

[0091] SFN represents the SFN,

[0092] subframe number represents the subframe number,

[0093] drx-StartOffset represents the index of the reference subframe, or the DRX start offset and

[0094] drx-NonIntegerCycle represents the non-integer length of the DRX cycle.

[0095] For a short DRX cycle, the existing formula for determining the starting DRX subframes for non-integer short DRX cycle may be modified as follows:

[0096] floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0, or

[0097] floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN -drx-ReferenceSFN) × 10) modulo 10240) + subframe number - drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0098] where drx-NonIntegerShortCycle represents the non-integer length of the short DRX cycle.

[0099] For a long DRX cycle, the existing formula for determining the starting DRX subframes for non-integer long DRX cycle may be modified as follows:

[0100] floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0, or

[0101] floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN -drx-ReferenceSFN) × 10) modulo 10240) + subframe number - drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0

[0102] where drx-NonIntegerLongCycle represents the non-integer length of the long DRX cycle.

[0103] The benefits can be obvious. There is no restriction on long DRX start offset configuration and meanwhile can make sure no problem for short DRX cycle. Furthermore, all subframes can be used as DRX cycle starting subframe which could increase PDCCH capacity. Finally, starting subframe for short DRX and long DRX can be aligned all the time.

[0104] For the modified formula proposed in the present disclosure, embodiments of the present disclosure have a new subframe and offset mapping in the table 410 in FIG. 4A, and in the table 420 in FIG. 4B. The meaning of the values in table 410 in FIG. 4A is the same as that of the table 210 in FIG. 2A, and the meaning of the values in table 420 in FIG. 4B is the same as that of the table 220 in FIG. 2B. For the table 410 in FIG. 4A, embodiments of the present disclosure have the observation that:

[0105] ● When drx-StartOffset values are configured from 0 to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) -1, the existing formula and modified formula have the same result.

[0106] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, the periodicity of the short DRX cycle is  always drx-NonIntegerShortCycle.

[0107] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, starting subframes of short DRX and long DRX are aligned in all cycles.

[0108] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, adjacent drx-StartOffset values have adjacent starting subframes of short DRX in all cycles.

[0109] The inventors have considered that, to overcome the issues described above, at least modify the formula of short DRX as follows.

[0110] ● floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number - (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0111] ● Note: When drx-StartOffset values are configured from 0 to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) -1, the existing formula and modified formula have the same result. When drx-StartOffset values are configured from floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) to floor (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) -1, there are some differences.

[0112] In some implementations, the UE behaviours ofXR DRX may be modified as follows:

[0113] 1> if the drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset is configured:

[0114] 2> increment DRX_SFN_COUNTER by 1 in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to 0;

[0115] 2> if DRX is (re-) configured by RRC:

[0116] 3> set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 0 in the first symbol of the slot immediately after the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration;

[0117] 1> if the Short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is not configured, and [ (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-ShortCycle) = (drx-StartOffset) modulo (drx-ShortCycle) ; or

[0118] 1> if the Short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number - (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0:

[0119] 2> start drx-onDurationTimer for this DRX group after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe.

[0120] 1> if the long DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset is not configured, and [ (SFN × 10) + subframe  number] modulo (drx-LongCycle) = drx-StartOffset; or

[0121] 1> if the long DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerLongCycleStartOffset is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER ×10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number - (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0:

[0122] ... omitted text...

[0123] 4> start drx-onDurationTimer after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe.

[0124] For the modified formula proposed in the present disclosure, the inventors have observed that it has benefits.

[0125] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, the periodicity of the short DRX cycle is always drx-NonIntegerShortCycle.

[0126] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, starting subframes of short DRX and long DRX are aligned in all cycles.

[0127] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, adjacent drx-StartOffset values have adjacent starting subframes of short DRX in all cycles.

[0128] In some embodiments, if the short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN ×10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = (floor ( [drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) ) modulo floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) , start drx-onDurationTimer for this DRX group after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe. In some embodiments, if the short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN ×10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = (floor ( [ (drx-ReferenceSFN ×10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) ) modulo floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) , start drx-onDurationTimer for this DRX group after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe. Herein, drx-StartOffset is interchangeable or equivalent to drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) -drx-StartOffset. The benefits of this case are that no restriction on long DRX start offset configuration and meanwhile make sure no problem for short DRX cycles.

[0129] In some embodiments, if the short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = floor ( [drx-StartOffset] modulo floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) , start drx-onDurationTimer for this DRX group after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe. In some embodiments, if the short DRX cycle is used for a DRX group and the drx-NonIntegerShortCycle is configured, and floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = floor ( [ (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) , start drx-onDurationTimer for this DRX group after drx-SlotOffset from the beginning of the subframe.

[0130] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 does not expect floor ( [drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) equals to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) . The benefits of this case are that some restrictions on long DRX start offset configuration but reduce one modulo operation in the lower layer and meanwhile make sure no problem for short DRX cycle. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 does not expect floor ( [ (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) equals to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) . The benefits of this case are that some restrictions on long DRX start offset configuration but reduce one modulo operation in the lower layer and meanwhile make sure no problem for short DRX cycle.

[0131] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 expects floor ( [drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) is not larger than to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) -1. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 expects floor ( [ (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) + drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) is not larger than to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) -1.

[0132] In some embodiments, for short DRX cycle configuration, separate short DRX offset value, i.e. not reused long DRX offset value, is configured to UE, where the value range of short DRX offset is from 0 to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) -1.

[0133] In the current DRX mechanism, the DRX SFN counter is changed when:

[0134] ● increment DRX_SFN_COUNTER by 1 in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to 0;

[0135] ● set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 0 in the first symbol of the slot immediately after the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration.

[0136] There have been some discussions on how to initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER. Embodiments of the present disclosure consider the issues to be valid and need to change the  current technical specifications. The issue can be shown in the example 500 of FIG. 5. The network device (NW) generates and initially transmits RRC and set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to zero at a first SFN. However, UE successfully detects the RRC after HARQ retransmission and sets DRX_SFN_COUNTER to zero at a following SFN. There is misalignment between NW and UE about DRX_SFN_COUNTER. In this case, ifthe distance between the current subframe and the reference subframe is not multiple times of DRX cycle, that would cause misalignment between NW and UE.

[0137] Regarding how to enhancement the initialization of the DRX SFN counter, there are two options. A first option is to respect the agreement made in RAN2#123 meeting agreement, that both the counter NSFN and the DRX reference SFN drx-ReferenceSFN are added to the DRX formula and NSFN is initialized to 0. A second option is to revert at least part of the agreement made in the RAN2#123 meeting, and to initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 1 in some cases.

[0138] For the first option, there are two sub-options. A first sub-option (Sub-option 1-) 1 is to allow to initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN before RRC configuration and infer the DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN after RRC configuration. A second sub-option (Sub-option 1-2) is not to allow to initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN before RRC configuration.

[0139] For Sub-option 1-1, in some example embodiments, as shown in the signaling flow 300, the terminal device 110 receives (302) , from the network device 120, a DRX configuration or reconfiguration indicating a DRX reference SFN. Then the terminal device 110 may set the DRX SFN counter to zero in the first symbol of the first slot of a closest system frame with the indicated DRX reference SFN preceding a successful completion of the RRC configuration or reconfiguration. In some example embodiments, the DRX configuration or reconfiguration is received in RRC signaling.

[0140] That is, some embodiments of the present disclosure propose to set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 0 in the first symbol of the first slot of the closest SFN with the indicated number drx-ReferenceSFN preceding the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration. FIG. 6A illustrates an example 600 of initialization of DRX_SFN_COUNTER. As illustrated, if UE successfully detects RRC after HARQ retransmission, UE may set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 0 in the first symbol of the first slot of the closest SFN with the indicated number drx-ReferenceSFN preceding the successful  detection of the RRC. Then DRX_SFN_COUNTER increments by one in the current SFN. In this case, there is no misalignment between NW and UE regarding DRX_SFN_COUNTER.

[0141] Further, in some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the non-integer length of the DRX cycle is configured, the terminal device 110 may increment the DRX SFN counter by one in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to zero.

[0142] In some example embodiments, for Sub-option 1-2, shown in FIG. 6B, if DRX_SFN_COUNTER is increased by 1 in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to drx-ReferenceSFN. As a result, no matter for case 1 and case 2 of RRC reception, NW and UE have the aligned DRX_SFN_COUNTER.

[0143] For case 1, the fractional distance between SFN and the reference point is (SFN × 10 + subframe number) - (drx-StartOffset + drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) , as SFN is from 512 to 1023 which is larger than drx-ReferenceSFN.

[0144] For case 2, the fractional distance between SFN and the reference point is (10240 + SFN × 10 + subframe number) - (drx-StartOffset + drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) , as SFN is from 0 to 511 which is less than drx-ReferenceSFN that a 10240 should be added to calculate the distance.

[0145] In some embodiments, when drx-ReferenceSFN is larger than the SFN where the RRC signalling containing this drx-ReferenceSFN is received, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 1; Otherwise, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0. In some embodiments, when the SFN where the RRC signalling containing this drx-ReferenceSFN is received is less than drx-ReferenceSFN, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 1; Otherwise, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0.

[0146] The benefits of those embodiments are that the conditions of setting DRX_SFN_COUNTER can be simplified, which could reduce implementation complexity and increase processing performance.

[0147] A unified formula can be used to calculate the fractional distance for both case 1 and case 2, which is ( ( (SFN -drx-ReferenceSFN) × 10) modulo 10240) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset. Thus embodiments of the present disclosure have the following.

[0148] ● floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN -drx-ReferenceSFN) × 10) modulo 10240) + subframe number-drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0149] ● floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN -drx-ReferenceSFN) × 10) modulo 10240) + subframe number-drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0

[0150] ● increment DRX_SFN_COUNTER by 1 in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to drx-ReferenceSFN;

[0151] For option 2 (i.e., to initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 1 in some cases) , there are also two sub options. For both sub options, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is set to 1 when drx-ReferenceSFN is larger than the SFN where the RRC signaling containing this drx-ReferenceSFN is received, and to 0 otherwise. For a first sub-option (Sub-option 2-1) , it is to revert the part that drx-ReferenceSFN is added to the DRX formula. For a second sub-option (Sub-option 2-2) , the part that drx-ReferenceSFN is added to the DRX formula remains unchanged even though there is no need to include it. FIG. 7 shows an example 700 of such an option, where if UE successfully detects RRC after HARQ retransmission, UE may set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 1.

[0152] In some embodiments, when drx-ReferenceSFNis configured to 512 and the first symbol of the slot immediately after the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration containing this drx-ReferenceSFN is on the first half of a hyper frame (i.e., SFN is between 0 and 512) , DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 1; Otherwise, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0. In some embodiments, when drx-ReferenceSFN is larger than the SFN where the first symbol of the slot immediately after the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration containing this drx-ReferenceSFN is located, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 1; Otherwise, DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0. The benefits of such embodiments are that MAC can only maintain the counter after completion of configuration. There is no need first to get the counter before applying the configuration and second to get the counter after applying the configuration.

[0153] In some example embodiments of the present disclosure, on how to set DRX_SFN_COUNTER, down-select between the following options:

[0154] ● Option 1: Respect the agreement made in RAN2#123 meeting, that drx-ReferenceSFN is added to the DRX formula and DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0. Adopt the TP as following:

[0155] ○ Sub-option 1-1 is to initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN before RRC configuration and infer the DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN after RRC configuration:

[0156] ■ set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 0 in the first symbol of the first slot of the closest SFN with indicated number drx-ReferenceSFN preceding the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration;

[0157] The benefit of sub-option 1-1 is that counter is always initialized to 0.

[0158] ○ Sub-option 1-2 is to initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN only after RRC configuration) :

[0159] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN-drx-ReferenceSFN) ×10) modulo 10240) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0160] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN-drx-ReferenceSFN) ×10) modulo 10240) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0

[0161] ■ increment DRX_SFN_COUNTER by 1 in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to drx-ReferenceSFN;

[0162] ● Option 2 is to revert at least part of the agreement made in RAN2#123 meeting, that DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0. The following may be adopted:

[0163] ○ set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 1 when drx-ReferenceSFN is larger than the SFN of the first symbol of the slot immediately after the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration, and to 0 otherwise;

[0164] ○ Sub-option 2-1 is also to revert the part that drx-ReferenceSFN is added to the DRX formula:

[0165] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0166] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0

[0167] ○ Sub-option 2-2 is to respect the part that drx-ReferenceSFN is added to the DRX formula:

[0168] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number - (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) - drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0169] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number - (drx-ReferenceSFN × 10) - drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0

[0170] In embodiments of the present disclosures, remaining issues of non-integer DRX cycle are studied, and it is propose that:

[0171] Observation 1: For current formula of short DRX, it has issues that:

[0172] ● When drx-StartOffset, which is from 0 to floor (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) -1, equals to floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) , the periodicity of short DRX cycle is not drx-NonIntegerShortCycle anymore. Unexpected DRX cycle happens.

[0173] ● For some configured drx-StartOffset values, starting subframes of short DRX and long DRX are not aligned in some cycles when drx-NonIntegerLongCycle is configured.

[0174] ● For some configured drx-StartOffset values, adjacent drx-StartOffset values does not have adjacent starting subframes of short DRX in some cycles.

[0175] ● From DRX formula’s perspective, there is no additional issue to support to configure short non-integer DRX together with long integer DRX cycle. On the contrary, misa-lignment issue between short DRX and Long DRX is not happened when long integer DRX cycle is used.

[0176] Observation 2: Mathematically, (Amodulo C = B modulo C) and ( (A-B) modulo C = 0) are equivalent, but (floor (X) = floor (Y) ) and (floor (X -Y) = 0) are not equivalent.

[0177] ● For the agreement of “At least use legacy formula and add floor operation” made in RAN2 #123bis meeting, where legacy formula is (X = Y) style and equivalent to (X -Y = 0) style, it is worth to study which is better between (floor (X) = floor (Y) ) and (floor (X -Y) = 0) .

[0178] Proposal 1: To overcome the issues in Observation 1, at least modify the formula of short DRX as following:

[0179] ● floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number - (drx-Ref-erenceSFN × 10) -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0180] ● Note: When drx-StartOffset values are configured from 0 to floor (drx-NonInteger-ShortCycle) -1, current formula and modified formula have the same result. When drx-StartOffset values are configured from floor (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) to floor (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) -1, there are some differences.

[0181] Observation 3: For the modified formula in proposal 1, it has benefits that:

[0182] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, the periodicity of short DRX cycle is always drx-NonIntegerShortCycle.

[0183] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, starting subframes of short DRX and long DRX are aligned in all cycles.

[0184] ● For all configured drx-StartOffset values, adjacent drx-StartOffset values have adja-cent starting subframes of short DRX in all cycles.

[0185] Proposal 2: On how to set DRX_SFN_COUNTER, down-select between the following options:

[0186] ● Option 1: Respect the agreement made in RAN2#123 meeting, that drx-ReferenceSFN is added to the DRX formula and DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0. Adopt the TP as following:

[0187] ○ Sub option 1-1 (Initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN before RRC configu-ration and infer the DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN after RRC configuration) :

[0188] ■ set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 0 in the first symbol of the first slot of the closest SFN with indicated number drx-ReferenceSFNpreceding the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration;

[0189] ○ Sub option 1-2 (Initialize DRX_SFN_COUNTER at SFN only after RRC con-figuration) :

[0190] ■ fioor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN-drx-ReferenceSFN) × 10) modulo 10240) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonInteg erShortCycle) ) = 0

[0191] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + ( ( (SFN-drx-ReferenceSFN) × 10) modulo 10240) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerLongCycle) ) = 0

[0192] ■ increment DRX_SFN_COUNTER by 1 in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to drx-ReferenceSFN;

[0193] ● Option 2: Revert at least part of the agreement made in RAN2#123 meeting, that DRX_SFN_COUNTER is initialized to 0. Adopt the TP as following:

[0194] ○ set DRX_SFN_COUNTER to 1 when drx-ReferenceSFN is larger than the SFN of the first symbol of the slot immediately after the successful completion of the RRC (re-) configuration, and to 0 otherwise;

[0195] ○ Sub option 2-1 (also revert the part that drx-ReferenceSFNis added to the DRX formula) :

[0196] ■ floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerShortCycle) ) = 0

[0201] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 800 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1.

[0202] At block 810, the terminal device 110 determines that a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle is used for a DRX group and a non-integer length of the DRX cycle is configured.

[0203] At block 820, the terminal device 110 determines an index of a current subframe based on a DRX system frame number (SFN) counter, SFN, and a subframe number.

[0204] At block 830, the terminal device 110 determines an index of a reference subframe at least based on a DRX start offset.

[0205] At block 840, in accordance with a determination that a distance between the index of the current subframe and the index of the reference subframe is about multiple times of the non-integer length of the DRX cycle, the terminal device 110 determines the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group.

[0206] In some example embodiments, the terminal device performs a floor operation on a result of a modulo operation of the distance and the non-integer length of the DRX cycle, wherein the distance is a dividend in the modulo operation, and the non-integer length of the DRX cycle is a divisor in the modulo operation; and in accordance with a determination that a result of the floor operation is zero, determine the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group.

[0207] In some example embodiments, the terminal device determines the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group in accordance with a determination of the following:

[0208] floor ( [ (DRX_SFN_COUNTER × 10240) + (SFN × 10) + subframe number -drx-StartOffset] modulo (drx-NonIntegerCycle) ) = 0,

[0209] wherein:

[0210] floor () represents the floor operation,

[0211] modulo represent the modulo operation,

[0212] DRX_SFN_COUNTER represents the DRX SFN counter,

[0216] drx-NonIntegerCycle represents the non-integer length of the DRX cycle.

[0217] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the current subframe as a starting subframe of the DRX group, the terminal device starts a DRX on-duration timer after a DRX slot offset from a beginning of the current frame.

[0218] In some example embodiments, the terminal device receives, from a network device, a DRX configuration or reconfiguration indicating a DRX reference SFN; and set the DRX SFN counter to zero in the first symbol of the first slot of a closest system frame with the indicated DRX reference SFN preceding a successful completion of the RRC configuration or reconfiguration.

[0219] In some example embodiments, wherein the terminal device receives, from the network device, radio resource control (RRC) signaling comprising the DRX configuration or reconfiguration.

[0220] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that the non-integer length of the DRX cycle is configured, the terminal device increments the DRX SFN counter by one in the first symbol of a slot in which SFN changes to zero.

[0221] In some example embodiments, the DRX cycle comprises a short DRX cycle or a long DRX cycle.
