Abstract
Description
[0001] KIOSK FOR SHORT TERM FOCUS WORK
[0002] Field of the invention
[0003] The invention relates to a kiosk for short term focus work and personal video conferencing, particularly to a light weight kiosk. The kiosk is easy to assemble and due to the light weight structure e.g. can be easily repositioned.
[0004] Background
[0005] In modem working environments, video conferencing and short term focus work has become more and more popular. Thus, there is a need for spaces, where video conferencing and short term focus work can be done in a focused and convenient atmosphere, particularly in open plan offices.
[0006] This is, as there is an increasing trend of remote work. Hence, many employees work from different locations and meet virtually. Video conferencing spaces shall provide a dedicated and appropriate space for employees to participate in video meetings without distractions from their environment, such as noisy open plan offices. Further, such spaces help to extract the user from its usual working environment. Further, video conferencing often involves discussing sensitive information, and employees need a private space to have these conversations. Hence, video conferencing spaces shall offer a certain level of privacy.
[0007] Even further, video conferencing allows for more personal and visual communication than audio calls or emails. Having a designated space for video conferencing can enhance communication and help participants pick up on non-verbal cues, which are crucial for effective collaboration.
[0008] Even further, providing a dedicated video conferencing space allows to give the speaker a more professional appearance, as no disturbing objects or persons are visible in the back ground of the video image.
[0009] However, know video conferencing spaces, such as phone booths are oftentimes bulky and expensive. Thus, their availability is limited. Further, due to the bulky dimensions, it is oftentimes not possible to integrate these in existing offices or only in limited numbers.
[0010] Even further, in case of closed structures, such as phone booths, it is difficult to determine, whether the booth is occupied, or not. Thus, the user might get interrupted by persons checking the availability.
[0011] Even further, known phone booths provide for privacy only. Thus, an employee will use e.g. a tablet computer, a notebook or a laptop for video conferencing. While these portable devices provide for excellent imaging, e.g. as high quality cameras are included, the recording angle is often awkward because the speaker is recorded from a lower or lateral position. As a result, the videoconference mistakenly gives the impression that the speaker is avoiding eye contact. Summary
[0012] In view of the above, it is the objective of the present invention to provide a short term focus work and personal video conferencing kiosk, that is easy to assemble and lightweight. Further, the video conferencing space shall provide for an ideal presentation of the speaker and / or provide for a convenient and ergonomic working posture.
[0013] This objective is achieved by a kiosk for short term focus work and personal video conferencing according to claim 1. Further aspects of the invention are given in the dependent claims, as well as in the following description.
[0014] In particular, the objective is achieved by a kiosk for short term focus work and personal video conferencing. Further, the kiosk is suited for personal video conferencing. The kiosk comprises a frame structure. The frame structure may be formed from a number of beams and / or struts, that are fixed to each other. Further, the frame structure may be an integrally formed frame structure. The frame structure may be a metallic frame structure comprising (or consisting of) a metal, such as e.g. aluminum, steel, and / or the like. Further, the frame structure may be polymeric. A polymeric frame structure may comprise or consist of a polymer, particularly a reinforced polymer. The polymer may be fiber and / or particle reinforced.
[0015] Further, the frame structure defines an enclosure for hosting a video conference participant. It is to be understood, that the enclosure is not an entirely closed enclosure, but formed by e.g. beams and / or struts of the frame structure having gaps in-between. Thus, a light weight kiosk can be achieved.
[0016] The kiosk further includes a back panel. The back panel is attached to the frame structure and provides a visible background for video conferencing. Thus, during video conferencing a convenient background can be provided. This background may be superimposed in the video image with filters, particularly with digital content.
[0017] The back panel may include pockets and / or orifices for receiving parts of the frame structure, such as a beam or a strut, for attaching the back panel to the frame structure. Further, the back panel may be attached to the frame structure by means of at least one magnet. Even further, there may be provided at least one latching element for latching the back panel to the frame structure. Even further, the back panel may include a cord edge element and the, frame structure may include a channel rail for receiving the cord edge element. These and other techniques for attaching the back panel to the frame structure may be used as a single attachment technique, or may be combined. In a particular aspect, the back panel and / or the frame structure may include gliding means, which are configured to adapt to the floor.
[0018] Further, the kiosk includes a front panel. The front panel being attached to the frame structure. The attachment of the front panel may be achieved as the attachment of the back panel, described above. It is to be understood that the front panel and the back panel may be attached to the frame structure using different attachment techniques.
[0019] Further, the front panel includes a video conference device support, which video conference device support, is adapted to hold a video conference device (such as a smart phone, a tablet, a notebook, a laptop, and / or the like), such that an image capturing device (e.g. a camera) of the video conference device is arranged substantially at an eye level of a video conference participant.
[0020] The kiosk may allow for standing and perching postures during short term work and / or personal video conferencing. Accordingly, the image capturing device may be arranged at a height (measured from the floor) being in a range from 130 cm to 185 cm, or in a range from 140 cm to 180 cm, or in rage from 150 to 170 cm. In a particular aspect, the image capturing device may be arranged at a height between 150 cm to 185 cm. While standing, or using an elevated seat such as a barstool like chair, or perching, the video capturing device can be properly positioned for a good video experience. For eye levels below 150 cm, the video capturing device can be positioned on a desk element providing a working surface for proper viewing angles.
[0021] In an alternative aspect, the kiosk may allow for seating during short term work and / or video conferencing. The average eye level when seated is between 70 and 85 cm, measured from a seat surface at a height of 45 cm, i.e. a total of 115 - 130 cm from the top edge of the floor. Hence, the image capturing device may be arranged at a height (measured from the floor) being in a range from 115 to 130 cm, particularly in a range from 120 to 125 cm.
[0022] The video conference device support leads to a more pleasant and convenient video conferencing experience, as the participant’s eyes are arranged at substantially the same height as the image capturing device. Thus, the participant is recorded under an angle that corresponds to a viewing angle in normal face-to-face conversations. Further, as the video conference device is supported at the respective height, the screen the participant is looking at it elevated, compared to a video conference device being provided at desk level. Thus, the participant has a more convenient work posture.
[0023] The kiosk may further comprise at least one side panel. The side panel may cover a lateral portion of the frame structure, so as to hide a screen of a video conference device being held by the video conference device support from lateral viewing by someone outside the kiosk. Lateral viewing is to be understood as the view of someone straight facing the lateral side of the frame structure.
[0024] In an aspect of the invention, the side panel is integrally formed with the front panel. Thus, the number of parts can be reduced, leading to a more efficient mounting. Further, front and side panels may form a curved front-side panel. This curved front side panel may be adapted to be clicked onto the frame structure. Thus, the attachment of the front-side panel is facilitated.
[0025] The front panel, the at least one side panel and / or the back panel may at least partially be covered with a sound absorbing or sound dampening material. For example, the panel (front, back and / or side panel) may have a solid core, e.g. a polymeric core or a metal core. The polymeric core may be made of or include a thermoplastic material, such as PET, PE, PP, PA, and / or the like. The metallic core may be made of or include steel and / or aluminum. One side, two sides or all sides of said core may be covered with a sound absorbing material. Said material may be a fabric, such as a non-woven. The sound absorbing material may also be made of or include a thermoplastic material, such as PET or natural materials, such as cotton, coconut fiber, sheep’s wool, and / or the like. Thus, inside the kiosk, environmental noise may be dampened and / or voice recording may be improved.
[0026] In a further aspect, the panel (front, back and / or side panel) may at least partially or entirely made of the sound absorbing or sound dampening material, such as a fabric, particularly a non-woven. Further, the panel (front, back and / or side panel) may be constructed out of one material, such as PET, PE, PP, PA, and / or the like. The material may provide mechanical strength and may be formed so as to provide sound dampening and / or sound absorbing properties. In a particular aspect, the panel may have a sound-absorbing surfaces, which is designed to minimize the reflection and reverberation of sound waves. For example, the sound-absorbing surface may include a porous structure, which absorbs sound energy by allowing it to penetrate the surface and dissipate within the structure through friction and air resistance.
[0027] Further the kiosk may include a desk element. The desk element may be supported by the frame structure. Further, the desk element may be arranged at a height level, which is below a height level of the video conference device support. In a particular aspect, the height level of the desk element may be at a standing height, in a range from 90 cm and 130 cm, particularly in arrange from 95 cm to 125 cm. Thus, while the video conference device support arranges the video conference device at a suitable height, as described above, the desk element provides a working surface for doing paper work, using a keyboard, a mouse, and / or the like. Thus, the participant can conveniently work within the kiosk, be it video conferencing, or typical desk-work.
[0028] In a particular aspect, the back panel may be a flexible back panel. The flexible back panel may be made of a fabric, such as a non-woven. In a particular aspect, the back panel may include a lower edge. This lower edge may be weighted, e.g. by weights being integrated into or attached to the back panel. A weighted lower edge allows the flexible back panel to be pulled taut and prevents the back panel from wrinkling or rolling up. Thus, a uniform video background can be provided. Even further, the flexible back panel allows for a quick and easy set-up of the kiosk and is also light weight.
[0029] The back panel may cover a roofing of the frame structure at least partially. When fully covered, noise can effectively be prevented from entering and leaving the kiosk. In case the roofing is covered only partially, e.g. a section above the desk element and / or above a (seated) participant may be left uncovered. Thus, ambient light is available for lightning the participants face during video conferencing and / or for desk work.
[0030] In a further aspect, a surface of the back panel that is visible from inside the enclosure, particularly a section of said surface that is visible as background in video conferencing may have a substantially uniform appearance, and / or a surface color, optionally green, which allows for chroma keying, and / or a decor (e.g. a book shelf, a company logo, a conferencing room, and / or the like). Thus, the participant can be presented in a desired environment. In an aspect, the video conference device support may include a hinged portion. This hinged portion can be moved from a first position to a second position. In the first position, the hinged portion, is arranged substantially parallel to a main surface of the front panel. Hence, in the first position, the hinged portion is folded in and not in use. In the second position, the main surface of the front panel and the hinged portion enclose an angle a, wherein a is > 110° or wherein a is > 90°. In this second position, the hinged portion serves as a stand for a video conference device, such as a laptop or notebook computer, allowing to use a screen, a camera and / or a keyboard of the video conference device.
[0031] Further, the video conference device support may include a fixed shelf portion. The fixed shelf portion extends from the main surface of the front panel and may serve as smart-phone or tablet stand. It may protrude from the main surface for at most 10 cm, or at most 5 cm, or at most 4 cm, or at most 3 cm.
[0032] Optionally, the fixed shelf portion is arranged underneath the hinged portion and further optionally, the fixed shelf portion abuts the hinged portion, when the hinged portion is in its second position. The fixed shelf portion thus serves not only as a as smart-phone or tablet stand, but also as a stop that determines the second position of the hinged portion.
[0033] In a particular aspect, the video conference device support may be height adjustable. For example, the video conference device support may be arranged slidably in a vertical direction. This may be achieved by arranging the video conference device support movable relative to the remaining parts of the front panel, or by arranging the front panel moveable relative to the frame structure.
[0034] Even further, a roofing of the kiosk may be transparent or translucent. Hence, in the roofing region, the frame structure may be covered by a transparent and / or translucent material. Additionally, or alternatively, in the roofing region, there may be an orifice, i.e. at least parts of the roofing region may not be covered. Thus, ambient light can shine on the video conference participant and / or the desk element. Hence, no additional lightning is required to provide for a good illumination of the kiosk’s workplace.
[0035] Further, in an aspect, the kiosk does not include electrically powered components. Thus, for working properly, the kiosk does not need to be connected to a power grid. Therefore, the kiosk can be installed very flexible.
[0036] Further, the frame structure may be configured to be mounted and unmounted without the use of tools. For example, beams and / or struts forming the frame structure can be connected by snap-in connections, or by plugging.
[0037] In a particular aspect, the frame structure may include a first part (e.g. front part) and a second part (e.g. a back part), wherein the first part and the second part can be assembled together without the use of tools, e.g. by a snap-in connection and / or by plugging. Alternatively, the frame structure may include a left-lateral part and a right-lateral part, wherein the left-lateral part and a right-lateral part can be assembled together without the use of tools, e.g. by a snap-in connection and / or by plugging. It is to be understood, that for a fast and easy mounting, any other splitting of the frame structure in at least a first and a second part is possible.
[0038] Even further, by providing the frame structure, the total weight of the kiosk may be at most 35 kgs. This allows the kiosk to be mounted, unmounted and moved easily.

The front panel 30 includes a video conference device support 40, which includes a hinged portion 42 and optionally a fixed shelf portion 44. The hinged portion 42 is folded in and in its first position. Hence, the hinged portion 42 is arranged substantially parallel to a main surface 31 of the front panel 30.
[0055] The front panel 30 includes a solid core 37 (e.g. a PET-core), which is covered inside and outside with a cover 38, which a sound absorbing material, e.g. a fabric or non-woven. The core 37 is shown in more detail in Fig. 8. In a further aspect, attaching means, such as hooks, or knobs 36, may be provided at the side panels 32, 34 and / or the front panel 30. These attaching means 36 serve for attaching additional objects, which are not permanently or mandatory part of the kiosk 1, such as e.g. an extension cable 300 (for powering the video conference device 100) or a basket 400 (for holding stationery, such as post-its, pens, and / or the like).
[0056] The front panel 30 and likewise the side panels 32, 34 protect a desk element 50 from external views. The desk element 50 is supported by the frame structure 10. As shown, the height level of the desk element 50 is below the height level of the video conference device support 40.
[0057] Figs. 3A-C show a schematic view of a video conference device support 40, in different use cases. The video conference device support 40 is located above a desk element 50. Accordingly, the video conference device support 40, is adapted to hold a video conference device 100 (e.g. a laptop or a tablet), such that an image capturing device 120 (e.g. a camera) of the video conference device is arranged substantially at an eye level of a seated video conference participant. Further, a screen 110 of the video conference device 100 is arranged at a height that is convenient to look at for a video conference participant.
[0058] In Fig. 3A, the video conference device support 40 is not in use. A hinged portion 42 of the video conference device support 40 is folded in and arranged substantially parallel to the main surface 31 of the front panel 30 (first position). In this first position, the hinged portion 42 is not in use. Below the hinged portion 42, a fixed shelf portion 44 is provided. The fixed shelf portion 44 protrudes from the main surface 31. It serves as a tablet or smart phone stand, as shown in Fig. 3C. Further, the fixed shelf portion 44a serves as a stop that determines the second position of the hinged portion 42, as shown in Fig. 3B. In Fig. 3B, the hinged portion 42 is folded out (second position). In this second position, the main surface 31 of the front panel 30 and the hinged portion 42 enclose an angle a, wherein a is > 90°, or > 110° (here about 120°). In its second position, the hinged portion 42 serves as a stand for a video conference device 100, such as a laptop or notebook computer, allowing to use a screen 110, a camera 120 and / or a keyboard of the video conference device 100. Further, for eye levels below 150 cm, the video capturing device can be positioned on the desk element 50 for proper viewing angles.
[0059] Fig. 4 shows a further schematic perspective view of the kiosk 1 for video conferencing, as already shown in Fig. 1. As best seen in Fig. 4, the back panel 20 is visible from inside the enclosure and serves as background in video conferencing. The back panel 20 has a substantially uniform appearance and is not interrupted or covered by any beams and / or struts of the frame structure 10.
[0060] Fig. 5 shows a schematic perspective view of a frame structure 10. The frame structure comprises substantially vertical beams l la-d and horizontally arranged beams 13a-e. The beams 13a, 13bconnect beams 11c and l id. Further beam 13e connects vertical beams I la, 11b. Beam 13d connects two roof beams 13 f, 13g of the frame.
[0061] Beams 13d and 13e may serve for attaching the back panel. For this reason, they may be divided into two parts and can be inserted into pockets provided on the back panel 20 to hold the back panel 20 in place. Beams 13a and 13d may serve for attaching the front panel 30. Further, beam 13c may serve as a foot rest.
[0062] For supporting and attaching the desk element 50 support elements 17g, 17h may be provided. The support elements may be attached to a vertical beam 11c, l id and / or to a beam 13 or a strut 17a, 17b. Struts 17a, 17b may not only serve for assembling but may also enhance the stiffness of the frame structure. The struts are substantially straight and connect neighboring beams 11c and l id.
[0063] The frame structure 10 may include a first part (e.g. front part) and a second part (e.g. a back part). The first part may be formed by beams 11c, 1 Id, 13a-g and struts 17a, b. The second part may be formed by beams I la, 11b and beam 13e. The first part and the second part can be assembled together without the use of tools, e.g. by a snap-in connection and / or by plugging.
[0064] Fig. 6 shows a schematic perspective view of the back panel 20, as e.g. used for the kiosk shown in Fig. 1. The back panel 20 includes a back portion 22, which basically serves as background in video conferencing. Lateral edges 24, 26 of the back panel serve for attaching the back panel 20 to the frame structure 10. The edges 24, 26 may include pockets for receiving beams I la, 1 lb. Further, upper and lower edges 27, 29 may include pockets for receiving beams 13d, 13e.
[0065] Additionally, or alternatively, the back panel 20 may include at least one magnet for securing the back panel onto the frame. Even further, there may be provided at least one latching element for latching the back panel 20 to the frame structure 10.
[0066] Even further, the lateral edges 24, 26 may include a cord edge element and the, frame structure 10 may include a channel rail for receiving the cord edge elements. A lower edge 27 of the back panel 20 may be weighted, allowing the flexible back panel 20 to be pulled taut and preventing the back panel 20 from wrinkling or rolling up.
[0067] A roofing portion 28 of the back panel covers the roofing 18 at least partially, as outlined above. The upper edge 29 limits the back element 20 at the top. Fig. 7 shows a schematic perspective view of a front panel 30, which is formed as integrally build curved front-side panel. This front panel 30 includes lateral side panels 32 and 34.
[0068] Fig. 8 gives a further schematic view of a front panel 30’. This front panel 30’ may serve as a core 37, i.e. it may be covered. In an alternative embodiment, the front panel 30’ is not covered. The front panel 30’ is integrally formed with side panels 32, 34 and may be made of a sound absorbing or sound dampening material. On the inside, the front panel 30’ and / or the side panels 32’, 34’ may be structured with a sound absorbing structure 33, here in form of ribs.
