[0001] IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
[0002] The present invention relates to a blooming fragrance composition, to a use of such a fragrance composition for enhancing the fragrance impact, more particularly the olfactive bloom and room filling in consumer product applications, such as personal care, air care or home care applications, and to a method for enhancing the olfactive bloom and room filling in rinse-off personal care applications.
[0003] One sought after benefit of perfumed products is the generation of a nice odor that increases the comfort of the user and leads to an olfactive cue related to the product efficacy. In personal care, this traditionally translates to the generation of a powerful blooming odor that are generated during the application of the consumer product, such as the action of washing hair and skin. The blooming odor is generated upon application of a cleansing composition, such as a shampoo or a shower gel, on wet hair and wet skin and the subsequent application of rinse water. In air care or home care, the perfumed products create a pleasant ambiance due to the presence of perceived nice smells, which are often linked with concepts of health and hygiene.
[0004] Blooming odors have the additional advantage of signalizing freshness and cleanness, for example of the freshly washed hair or skin. Today consumers are however increasingly keen to experience improved benefits with perfumed products. The capability of consumer products to generate odors that fill the room where a product is applied is becoming a key performance indicator conditioning product repurchasing. In personal, air and home care, consumers expect the blooming fragrance to be fresh and intense and to be perceivable throughout the room or the shower cabin.
[0005] However, for example in the context of personal care, fragrance blooming is a highly dynamic phenomenon, which is produced during the very early stage of the application and is the result of complex physical and sensorial mechanisms.
[0006] In particular, it is highly desirable that room filling is perceived by the consumers as a continuation of the fresh and clean impression he / she has experienced when applying the product, such as washing his / her hair and / or skin. In other words, it is highly desirable that the fragrance composition employed to perfume the consumer product is capable of providing an "extended" or "linear" bloom that preferably lasts at least as long as the application, for example as long as the shower experience lasts.
[0007] WO 2018 / 071897 Al discloses high performing, high impact bloom accords containing fragrance ingredients having pre-defined experimental velocities. The experimental velocity is calculated as the distance the fragrance travels divided by the so-called speed of diffusivity. The disclosed composition rules are, however, not directed to delivering bloom and room filling after a period of time after application, such as during a full shower experience.
[0008] It is therefore a problem underlying the present invention to address the above- mentioned shortcomings in the prior art. In particular, it is a problem underlying the present invention to provide fragrance compositions for consumer products that offer bloom and room filling that starts at the moment where the product is applied, for example on wet hair and / or wet skin, and fills the room or shower cabin during the application (i.e. shower experience), and are hedonically pleasant to the consumer all over the time the product is applied and perceived.

[0020] By "fragrance composition" is meant a mixture of fragrance ingredients. The fragrance composition may also comprise solvents.
[0021] By "high performance ingredient" is meant a fragrance ingredient having a high perceived odor intensity at low concentrations. The odor intensity of a fragrance ingredients may be measured by olfactometry. Typically, the intensity is assessed by a panel of people who score the olfactive impact of an ingredient on a scale as a function of the concentration of this ingredient in the air. A concentration-intensity curve is obtained which may typically have a sigmoid shape, with a low intensity region and a high intensity plateau region and an intermediate region between these two regions where the intensity increases steeply (threshold). The performance of an ingredients is related to the position and the steepness of the sigmoid, as well as to the height of the high intensity region. The lower the concentration of the sigmoid threshold, the steeper the sigmoid and the higher the high intensity plateau, the more performing the ingredient. On the other hand, the dosage of a fragrance ingredient in a perfume depends on the performance of this ingredient: high performance ingredients are typically used at a low level in a perfume. Thus, the dosage at which an ingredient is typically used in perfumery may also be considered as a suitable measurement of the performance of this ingredient.
[0022] High performance ingredients may be split into two groups A and B. Group A ingredients encompasses ingredients that are employed at very low levels in the fragrance composition because employing them at too high concentration would make the fragrance composition too harsh and aggressive, and not pleasant. Group B ingredients encompasses ingredient that are less harsh and aggressive than the Group A ingredients, and may be employed at significantly higher concentrations to accompany and drive the performance of the Group A ingredients. According to Raoult's law, the vapor pressure of a volatile substance in a mixture is proportional to the molar fraction of this substance in the mixture times its saturation pressure. The person skilled in the art of perfumery will easily understand that, combining Group A and Group B ingredients will limit and prolong the action of the Group A ingredients over time. The higher the concentration of the Group B ingredients, the longer the effect of combining Group A and Group B on the performance of a perfume. By "olfactive contribution" is meant the contribution of an ingredient to the overall intensity of a perfume. The olfactive contribution is related to the concentration of the ingredient in the vapor phase surrounding the perfume, wherein, according to the Raoult's Law, said concentration depends on the molar fraction of this ingredient in the perfume and on its vapor pressure at saturation.
[0023] By "blooming fragrance composition" is meant a fragrance composition having the capability of providing a strong olfactive signal when a consumer product comprising this fragrance composition is put in contact with water, more particularly with rinse water. The "olfactive bloom" is the result of such an effect. The olfactive bloom is a timedependent property that is typically perceived within the first minutes of an application.
[0024] By "(olfactive) room filling" is meant the propensity of a fragrance composition to provide a long lasting odour in a space that is located around the source where the fragrance composition is applied. In the context of the present invention, the space is typically a room or a shower cabin and the duration of the odour perception is typically in the order of minutes, such as the duration of a shower. Room filling may be considered as the continuation of bloom over time.

[0026] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0027] The applicant has surprisingly found that mixing high levels, such as more than 1 wt.%, more particularly more than 5 wt.%, more than 10 wt.%, more than 15 wt.%, or even more than 25 wt.% of high performance ingredients was not sufficient to provide the desired olfactive room and room filling in consumer product applications. Instead, the applicant has found that, in order to provide the desired effect, specific ingredients belonging to different performance classes should be combined according to specific rules. Perfume compositions fulfilling these rules were found to provide the desired olfactive room and room filling in consumer product applications, whereas perfume composition lying outside of the rules did not. In accordance with this finding, high performance ingredients were selected based on their blooming and room filling properties when assessed alone by a trained panel of up to five perfumers and evaluators. These ingredients were split into two groups A and B, as described hereinabove.
[0028] Additionally, the applicant has found that, in order to provide fragrance compositions having the desired olfactive room and room filling in consumer product applications, said high performance ingredients need to be combined with less performing ingredients, preferably derived from monoterpenes and having a vapor pressure of 1 Torr at 25 °C or higher, referred to as "lifting aids" or Group C ingredients hereinafter.
[0029] Such combinations of highly performing and less performing ingredients to generate an olfactive blooming and room filling effect in consumer product applications was not anticipated from the state of the art.
[0030] Furthermore, the applicant has found that, in order to provide the desired olfactive bloom and room filling, the sum of the individual concentrations of all fragrance ingredients drawn from Group B and Group C should be present at a level of at least 9 wt.% of the fragrance composition and that the ratio of the sum of the individual concentrations of all fragrance ingredients drawn from Group A and B to the sum of the individual concentrations of all fragrance ingredients drawn from Group C is 6 or less.
[0031] However, some of the Group A, B and C ingredients may be solid and / or may exhibit solubility issues when mixed together. This issue may be solved by using solvents that make these ingredients compatible with each other. Other fragrance ingredients that have themselves a significant odor intensity and have suitable olfactive blooming and room filling properties but in the same time are more "transparent" than the Group A and Group B ingredients, may also fulfill the role of solvents. Such fragrance ingredients, referred to as Group D ingredients hereinafter, may be used in large amounts without changing significantly the odor character of the perfume.

[0084] Example 2: Evaluation of the olfactive bloom and room filling properties of fragrance ingredients and fragrance compositions
[0085] Each of the fragrance compositions disclosed in Tables 1 to 4 was incorporated into an unperfumed shampoo product base at a level of 1 wt.%. The perfumed base was let to macerate for at least 24 hours before using the product An unperfumed commercial and proprietary shampoo base was used. The olfactive evaluation was performed in 5 m3 cabins equipped with a sink and an evaluation window located at about 1 m apart from the sink and at an elevation of about 0.7 m with respect to the level of the sink. The olfactive blooming and room filling performance was assessed by a panel of 8 to 9 expert panelists who rated the odor intensity on a scale of 1-5 (1 = barely noticeable, 2 = weak, 3 = medium, 4 = strong and 5 = very strong). The arithmetic mean of these scores was taken as a measure of olfactive blooming and room filling performance.

The drain of the sink was closed and 10 g or shampoo sample was placed at the bottom of the sink. 2 L of hot water (40 °C) was poured into the sink and the cabin was closed. The fragrance composition according to any of the preceding claims, additionally comprising from 0.1 wt% to 50 wt%, preferably from 0.5 wt% to 40 wt%, more preferably from 1 wt% to 30 wt%, of a solvent selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, triethyl citrate, diethyl citrate, isopropylidene glycerol, 1,2-propane diol, 1,3-propane diol, 1,2-butane diol, 1,3- butane diol, 1,2-pentane diol, triacetine, dimethyl isosorbide, dimethyl carbonate, isoparaffinic hydrocarbons, and mixtures thereof.
8. The use of a fragrance composition according to any of claims 1 to 7 for enhancing the olfactive bloom and room filling in consumer product applications.
9. A consumer product comprising a fragrance composition according to any one of claim 1 to 7, optionally wherein the consumer product is a personal care product, an air care product or a home care product.
10. The personal care product according to claim 9, wherein the personal care product is a rinse-off personal care product, particularly a cleansing composition, more particularly a shampoo, a shower gel or a liquid soap.
11. The consumer product according to any of claims 9 or 10, comprising the fragrance composition at a level of 0.005 to 10 wt.-%, more preferably from 0.1 to 5 wt.-%, and still more preferably from 0.025 to 2.5 wt.-% of the consumer product.
12. A method for enhancing for enhancing the olfactive bloom and room filling in rinse-off personal care applications during a shower experience, the method comprising the steps of:i. Providing a personal care product comprising the fragrance composition according to the present invention; ii. Applying the personal care product provided in step a) on hair or skin or on both air and skin before or during a shower; and iii. Rinsing said hair and / or skin with water.
13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the step ii. is performed in a shower cabin.
