AI Technical Summary
The increasing number of terminals and sensors in 6G networks leads to network congestion and communication failures due to the need for location registration, which becomes unmanageable as the number of devices increases, potentially disrupting large-scale communications.
A terminal that receives a call using a wide-area communication method, switches to a cellular method without requiring location registration, and then communicates using the cellular method for high-speed and large-capacity communication.
This approach simplifies location management by eliminating the need for location registration during initial communication, preventing network congestion and allowing high-speed, high-capacity communication by switching to cellular methods post-call, thereby reducing the risk of large-scale communication failures.

Abstract
Description
Terminal and communication method
[0001] The present invention relates to a terminal and a communication method in a communication system.
[0002] 3GPP (registered trademark) (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is currently studying a wireless communication system called 5G or NR (New Radio) (hereinafter, the wireless communication system will be referred to as "5G" or "NR") in order to achieve a larger system capacity, a higher data transmission speed, and a lower latency in wireless sections. Various wireless technologies are being studied for 5G to meet the requirements of achieving a throughput of 10 Gbps or more while keeping latency in wireless sections to 1 ms or less.
[0003] In NR, a network architecture including 5GC (5G Core Network) corresponding to EPC (Evolved Packet Core), which is the core network in the network architecture of LTE (Long Term Evolution), and NG-RAN (Next Generation - Radio Access Network) corresponding to E-UTRAN (Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network), which is the RAN (Radio Access Network) in the network architecture of LTE, is being considered (for example, Non-Patent Document 1 and Non-Patent Document 2).
[0004] Furthermore, various requirements are being considered for the next generation, 6G, such as ultra broadband communication, mission critical communication, ultra massive connection, universal coverage, intelligent connection, and ubiquitous sensing.
[0005] To achieve this requirement, the new concept aims to be extensible (e.g., to make it more future-proof), customizable (e.g., to make it easier to operate), and sustainable (e.g., to reduce costs and have a more robust structure).
[0006] 3GPP TS 23.501 V18.4.0 (2023-12)3GPP TS 23.502 V18.4.0 (2023-12)3GPP TS 23.228 V18.4.0 (2023-12)
[0007] With 6G, the number of terminals and sensors is expected to increase dramatically. As the number of terminals and sensors increases, the number of location registration signals increases, which may cause network congestion and increase the risk of communication failure.
[0008] The present invention has been made in view of the above points, and has as its object to simplify the location management of terminals in a wireless communication system.
[0009] According to the disclosed technology, a terminal is provided that has a receiving unit that receives a call from a first base station using a wide-area communication method, a control unit that switches the communication method being used from the wide-area communication method to a cellular method, and a transmitting unit that transmits a service request to a second base station using the cellular method.
[0010] According to the disclosed technology, it is possible to simplify the location management of terminals in a wireless communication system.

However, the existing technology is, for example, the existing LTE, but is not limited to the existing LTE. Furthermore, the term "LTE" used in this specification has a broad meaning including LTE-Advanced, and systems subsequent to LTE-Advanced (e.g., NR), or wireless LAN (Local Area Network), unless otherwise specified.
[0014] Furthermore, in the embodiments of the present invention, "configuring" radio parameters and the like may mean that predetermined values are pre-configured, or that radio parameters notified from the network node 30 or the terminal 20 are set.
[0015] Fig. 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system. As shown in Fig. 1, the communication system is composed of a UE, which is a terminal 20, and multiple network nodes 30. Hereinafter, it is assumed that one network node 30 corresponds to each function, but multiple functions may be realized by one network node 30, or multiple network nodes 30 may realize one function. Furthermore, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.
[0016] The RAN (Radio Access Network) is a network node 30 having a radio access function, which may include a base station 10, and is connected to a UE, an AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function), and a UPF (User plane function). The NRF is a network node 30 having a function of discovering NF instances that provide services. The UDM is a network node 30 that manages subscriber data and authentication data. The UDM is connected to a UDR (User Data Repository) that stores the data.
[0019] Fig. 2 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system in a roaming environment. As shown in Fig. 2, the network is composed of a UE, which is a terminal 20, and multiple network nodes 30. Hereinafter, it is assumed that one network node 30 corresponds to each function, but multiple functions may be realized by one network node 30, or multiple network nodes 30 may realize one function. Furthermore, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.
[0020] The RAN is a network node 30 having a radio access function, and is connected to the UE, the AMF, and the UPF. The AMF is a network node 30 having functions such as RAN interface termination, NAS termination, registration management, connection management, reachability management, and mobility management. The UPF is a network node 30 having functions such as a PDU session point to the outside that interconnects with the DN, packet routing and forwarding, and user plane QoS handling. The UPF and the DN constitute a network slice. In the wireless communication network according to the embodiment of the present invention, multiple network slices are constructed.
[0021] The AMF is connected to the UE, RAN, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, AF, and SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy). The AMF, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, and AF are network nodes 30 that are interconnected via respective service-based interfaces, Namf, Nsmf, Nnssf, Nnef, Nnrf, Nudm, Nausf, Npcf, and Naf.
[0022] The SMF is a network node 30 having functions such as session management, UE IP address allocation and management, DHCP function, ARP proxy, and roaming function. The NEF is a network node 30 having a function of notifying other NFs of capabilities and events. The NSSF is a network node 30 having functions such as selecting a network slice to which a UE connects, determining an allowed NSSAI, determining a configured NSSAI, and determining an AMF set to which a UE connects. The PCF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling network policies. The AF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling application servers. The NRF is a network node 30 having a function of discovering NF instances that provide services. The SEPP is a non-transparent proxy that filters control plane messages between PLMNs (Public Land Mobile Networks). The vSEPP shown in FIG. 2 is a SEPP in the visited network, and the hSEPP is a SEPP in the home network.
[0023] As shown in Figure 2, a UE is in a roaming environment connected to a RAN and an AMF in a Visited PLMN (VPLMN). The VPLMN and a Home PLMN (HPLMN) are connected via a vSEPP and an hSEPP. The UE can communicate with a UDM in the HPLMN via the AMF in the VPLMN, for example.
[0024] Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating an example of an IMS data channel network. As shown in Fig. 3, the IMS data channel network is configured with a terminal 20 (UE) and multiple network nodes 30 in each of an originating network and a terminating network. Hereinafter, it is assumed that one network node 30 corresponds to each function, but multiple functions may be realized by one network node 30, or multiple network nodes 30 may realize one function. Furthermore, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection. The network node 30 has, for example, the following functions described in Non-Patent Document 3:
[0025] The IMS-AGW (Access Gateway) is a network node 30 having a gateway function between the UE and the IMS network.
[0026] A P-CSCF (Proxy-Call Session Control Function) is a network node 30 having a proxy function between the UE and the IMS network.
[0027] The S-CSCF (Serving-Call Session Control Function) is a network node 30 having functions related to session control for the UE.
[0028] An I-CSCF (Interrogate-Call Session Control Function) is a connection point on the destination network side between networks (e.g., the source network side and the destination network side) in an IMS network, and is a network node 30 that has, for example, the function of forwarding a received SIP request to an S-CSCF in its own network.
[0029] An IMS AS (IP Multimedia Subsystem Application Server) is a network node 30 in an IMS network that has functions such as communicating with DCSF for event notification and receiving data channel control instructions from DCSF and communicating with MF. The IMS AS also receives a communication termination point registration request from DCSF, converts the received registration request into a SIP Register, and sends it to the S-CSCF. The IMS AS also converts a data channel establishment request received from DCSF into a SIP INVITE, and sends it to the S-CSCF.
[0030] The DCSF (Data Channel Signaling Function) is a network node 30 that has functions such as receiving event reports from the IMS-AS and deciding whether to allow the provision of a data channel service, managing the bootstrap data channel, and performing HTTP web server functions.
[0031] An MF (Media Function) is a network node 30 in an IMS network that has functions such as media resource management and forwarding of data channel media traffic. The MF processes media between a DCAS (Data Channel Application Server), which is a communication termination point, and a destination termination point based on configuration information received from a DCSF. The MF may also be called a DCMF (Data Channel Media Function). The MF may also be called an MRF (Multimedia Resource Function).
[0032] A DCAS (Data Channel Application Server) is a network node 30 having a function of terminating communications related to media and signaling in the IMS network.
[0033] In order for devices such as smartphones or IoT devices to communicate, they must register their location information to ensure efficient use. When communicating, location information must always be transmitted to a server (e.g., location registration) before calls or data communications can be used. However, if location registrations from devices increase due to some factor, the network may become congested, potentially leading to large-scale communications disruptions. For example, if location registration is not possible, the device will be unable to use the network, and if location registration signal congestion occurs, the device will be unable to use the network.
[0034] Furthermore, with 6G, the number of terminals and sensors is expected to increase dramatically. For example, it is expected that 10 million devices will be deployed per square kilometer, which is 10 times the number of devices deployed with 5G. As the number of terminals increases, the number of location registration signals will increase, increasing the risk of communication failure.
[0035] Therefore, in order to simplify the terminal location management, location registration may be omitted, and the start of network-triggered communication, that is, calling, may be possible even if the terminal has not registered its location.
[0036] Wide-area communication methods (such as LPWA (Low Power Wide Area), large zone methods, broadcast radio waves, satellite radio waves, and radio calling (such as pagers or radio calling for taxis)) are capable of long-distance transmission, but are slow. In other words, wide-area communication methods have the advantage of long-distance communication and the disadvantage of slow communication speed.
[0037] On the other hand, while cellular systems can use frequencies efficiently, they divide the service area into small areas called cells, install base stations in each area, and require a system to track and connect users as they move. Because users move between cells, it is necessary to constantly know which cell the user is in. In other words, cellular systems have the advantage of high-speed communication but the disadvantage of requiring location registration.
[0038] Therefore, by combining the following operations 1) and 2), it is possible to provide users with high-capacity, high-speed communication while reducing the location registration that is essential in cellular systems.
[0039] Operation 1) By calling a terminal using a wide-area communication method, location registration is not required. Only simple data such as a terminal identifier required for calling is encrypted and set in the call signal.
[0040] Operation 2) The terminal called by operation 1) switches the communication method within the terminal and accesses the network using the cellular method. After accessing the network, high-speed and large-capacity communication becomes possible because of the cellular method.
[0041] FIG. 4 is a sequence diagram illustrating an example of communication according to an embodiment of the present invention. In step S101, DL data addressed to the UE arrives at the UPF. In step S102, the UPF transmits a paging instruction to a base station that will make a call using a wide-area communication method. The wide-area communication method may be an LPWA, broadcast, satellite base station, a HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station) base station, an NTN (Non Terrestrial Network) base station, or a radio call. In step S103, the base station that will make a call using the wide-area communication method transmits a paging message to the UE. The terminal identifier included in the paging message is encrypted. The encrypted identifier may be, for example, an encrypted Subscriber Permanent Identifier (SUPI) or a Subscriber Concealed Identifier (SUCI). In step S104, the UE switches the communication method from the wide-area communication method to the cellular method. Steps S102 to S104 are new procedures.
[0042] In step S105, the UE sends a service request to the RAN. In step S106, the system performs authentication of the UE. In step S107, the system establishes a session for the UE. Steps S105 to S107 are existing procedures, and non-patent document 2 may be referred to, for example.
[0043] According to the above-described embodiment, by using a communication method capable of long-distance communication to call a terminal, location registration is not required if the communication method is used within the area where the method is used, thereby preventing large-scale communication failures due to network congestion. By using a cellular method for communication after the call, the user can continue to communicate at high speed and with large capacity. Because the identifier is encrypted, the terminal (SUPI) cannot be identified from the identifier except by the MNO (Mobile Network Operator).
[0044] That is, it is possible to simplify the location management of terminals in a wireless communication system.
[0045] (Device Configuration) Next, a description will be given of an example of the functional configuration of the base station 10, network node 30, and terminal 20 that perform the processes and operations described above. [0077] (Summary of the embodiment) As described above, according to the embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a terminal having a receiving unit that receives a call from a first base station using a wide-area communication method, a control unit that switches the communication method being used from the wide-area communication method to a cellular method, and a transmitting unit that transmits a service request to a second base station using the cellular method.
[0078] With the above configuration, by using a communication method capable of long-distance communication to call a terminal, location registration is not required if the call is made within the area of that communication method, thereby preventing large-scale communication failures due to network congestion. By using a cellular method for communication after the call, the user can continue to communicate at high speed and with large capacity. Because the identifier is encrypted, the terminal (SUPI) cannot be identified from the identifier except by the MNO (Mobile Network Operator). In other words, terminal location management can be simplified in a wireless communication system.
[0079] The receiving unit may receive the call based on an encrypted terminal identifier included in the call. With this configuration, since the identifier is encrypted, the terminal (SUPI) cannot be identified from the identifier except by an MNO (Mobile Network Operator).
[0080] The receiving unit may receive the call from the first base station of a Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) system. With this configuration, by using a communication system capable of long-distance communication for calling the terminal, location registration is not required if the terminal is used within an area of the communication system, and large-scale communication failures due to network congestion can be prevented.
[0081] The receiving unit may receive the call from the first base station of a Non Terrestrial Network (NTN) system. With this configuration, by using a communication system capable of long-distance communication for calling the terminal, location registration is not required if the terminal is used within an area of the communication system, and large-scale communication failures due to network congestion can be prevented.
[0082] The receiving unit may receive the call from the first base station using a wireless call system. With this configuration, by using a communication system capable of long-distance communication for calling the terminal, location registration is not required if the terminal is used within an area of the communication system, and large-scale communication failures due to network congestion can be prevented.
[0083] Furthermore, according to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a communication method in which a terminal executes the following procedures: receiving a call from a first base station using a wide-area communication method; switching the communication method in use from the wide-area communication method to a cellular method; and transmitting a service request to a second base station using the cellular method.
[0084] With the above configuration, by using a communication method capable of long-distance communication to call a terminal, location registration is not required if the call is made within the area of that communication method, thereby preventing large-scale communication failures due to network congestion.
