[0033] It may be understood that although the terms “first” , “second” , “third” and “fourth” etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another. For  example, a first element could be termed as a second element, and similarly, a second element could be termed as a first element, without departing from the scope of example embodiments. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the listed terms.

[0034] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” , “comprising” , “has” , “having” , “includes” and / or “including” , when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, and / or components etc., but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof. As used herein, “at least one of the following: <a list of two or more elements>” and “at least one of <a list of two or more elements>” and similar wording, where the list of two or more elements are joined by “and” or “or” , mean at least any one of the elements, or at least any two or more of the elements, or at least all the elements.

[0035] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following:

[0036] (a) hardware-only circuit implementations (such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry) and

[0037] (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as (as applicable) :

[0038] (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuit (s) with software / firmware and

[0039] (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a mobile phone or server, to perform various functions) and

[0041] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple  processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0042] As used herein, the term “communication network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as new radio (NR) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , narrow band Internet of things (NB-IoT) , new radio non-terrestrial (NR NTN) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, and / or beyond. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0043] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a satellite, a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology.

[0044] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station (SS) , a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and  playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial, a relay node, an integrated access and backhaul (IAB) node, and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0045] As used herein, the term “resource” , “transmission resource” , “resource block” , “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink (UL) resource” or “downlink (DL) resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, a resource in a combination of more than one domain or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, a resource in time domain (such as, a subframe) will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0046] In a current communication technology, the third generation partnership project (3GPP) does not specify any channel measurement for assisting downlink transmission of a random access (RACH) procedure, e.g., Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB transmission or transmission of a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) carrying the Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB. The network device (e.g., a gNB) might select a conservative modulation and coding scheme (MCS) to guarantee the robustness of the downlink transmission, which however is not efficient. Alternatively, the gNB may perform channel estimation on Msg1 / Msg3 / MsgA and predict conditions of a downlink channel based on the downlink-uplink reciprocity. However, the reliability of the prediction is questionable due to limited measurements and absence of reciprocity in case of an FDD system (e.g., a NTN system) . How to improve scheduling of downlink transmission of a random access procedure needs to be studied.

[0047] Therefore, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for transmission of assistance information during a random access procedure, especially for terminal device assisting Msg4 transmission with scheduling assistant information (SAI) report from the terminal device. According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a terminal device determines an information based on at least one downlink channel condition. Afterwards, the terminal device transmits, to a network device, the information in a random access procedure.

[0048] It is understood that the above procedure steps may work together, in a flow of operations as described below, partly together or independently of each other. By implementing the embodiments of the present disclosure, the terminal device could report the information derived based on the downlink channel condition to the network device, and the network device can schedule the downlink transmission of a random access procedure (e.g., Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB transmission) using the information in a dynamic and flexible manner, thereby achieving high efficient downlink transmission of the random access procedure, improving the efficiency and capacity of the system, and realizing downlink coverage enhancement.

[0049] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure of terminal device assistant downlink transmission of a random access procedure will be described below with reference to FIG. 1 through FIG. 9. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are given to enable the skilled in the art to understand inventive concepts of the present disclosure and implement the solution as proposed herein, and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.

[0050] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of an application scenario 100 in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The network environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a terminal device 102 and a network device 104. The network environment 100 may be a non-terrestrial (NTN) network as shown in FIG. 1. However, it should be understood that the NTN network is used herein just for example, and the network environment 100 could also be other types of networks.

[0051] As illustrated in FIG. 1, the terminal device 102 may also be referred to as a user equipment 102 or a UE 102. The network device 104 may also be referred to as a gNB 104 or a satellite 104. The network device 104 may have a large satellite footprint area (as shown by the biggest dashed circle) , which may be up to several millions of square kilometers (km2) .  The network device 104 may have a plurality of beams, each of which may cover a beam footprint area of thousands of km2. There may exist three types of beam footprint areas in the network environment 100, including a NTN illuminated beam footprint area 106-1, a NTN served beam footprint area 106-2 and a NTN unserved beam footprint area 106-3. The NTN illuminated beam footprint area 106-1 and the NTN served beam footprint area 106-2 are beam footprint areas in which NTN services are available. The NTN unserved beam footprint area 106-3 is a beam footprint area in which NTN services are not available. The NTN illuminated beam footprint area 106-1 may also be called as a NTN active beam footprint area 106-1. A number of active beams may be restricted by the satellite’s payload capability, therefore, it may not be able to provide NTN services for all beam footprints simultaneously. In other words, although there may be a lot of beam footprint areas in which NTN services are available in the large satellite footprint area, only a few number of beams are active and their corresponding beam footprint areas are illuminated. The terminal device 102 may be within the illuminated beam footprint area 106-1. The terminal device 102 and the first network device 104-1 can communicate with each other.

[0052] FIG. 2 illustrates an example signaling process 200 of terminal device assistant downlink transmission of a random access procedure in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0053] As shown in FIG. 2, the process 200 may involve a terminal device 202 (e.g., a UE 202) and a network device 204 (e.g., a gNB 204 or a satellite 204) . The terminal device 202 could be the terminal device 102 in FIG. 1, and the network device 204 could be the network device 104 in FIG. 1.

[0054] At 210, the terminal device 202 determines an information based on at least one downlink channel condition. At 220, the terminal device 202 transmits, to the network device 204, the information in a random access procedure. At the same time, in a reversed direction, the network device 204 receives, from the terminal device 202, the information in a random access procedure. In this way, the terminal device could report the information derived based on the downlink channel condition to the network device for the network device’s consideration.

[0055] In some example embodiments, the terminal device may receive, from the network device, message 4 (Msg4) of the random access procedure, wherein transmission of the Msg4  is scheduled based on the information. At the same time, in a reverse direction, the network device may schedule transmission of message 4 (Msg4) of the random access procedure based on the information and transmit, to the terminal device, the Msg4. The network device 204 may schedule the transmission of the Msg4 with adjusted resources using the information. For example, the network device 204 may schedule the transmission of the Msg4 with adjusted modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , downlink transmit power, number of PRBs, or number of repetitions for Msg4 transmission, etc. In some other embodiments, transmission of Msg2 or MsgB for a 2-step RACH also could be scheduled based on the information. In this way, the transmission of Msg4, Msg2 or MsgB could be scheduled dynamically and flexibly utilizing the information (also could be called scheduling assistant information, SAI) related to the downlink channel condition reported by the terminal device 202.

[0056] In some example embodiments, the information may comprise measurement results related to channel quality of at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204. In this way, any kind of measurement results related to channel quality of the downlink reference signals could be used as the SAI. In some example embodiments, the information may comprise measurement results of downlink reference signal receiving power (DL-RSRP) of the at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204. In this way, the DL-RSRP of the downlink reference signals could be used as the SAI. In some example embodiments, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise at least one synchronization signal and physical broadcast channel block (SSB) . Alternatively or additionally, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) of a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) . Alternatively or additionally, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise a DMRS of a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) scheduling message 2 (Msg2) . Alternatively or additionally, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise a DMRS of a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of message 2 (Msg2) . In some example embodiments, other kinds of channel quality measurement including the interference plus noise ratio (SINR) , DL-RSRP and downlink (DL) pathloss based on the SSB, the DMRS of the PBCH, the DMRS of the PDCCH scheduling Msg2 or the DMRS of the PDSCH of Msg2 could be taken as the SAI. The PDCCH may comprise a Type0-PDCCH scheduling SIB and / or a Type1-PDCCH scheduling Msg2. The SSB, the DMRS of the PBCH, the DMRS of the  PDCCH scheduling Msg2 or the DMRS of the PDSCH of Msg2 may correspond to measurement occasions (MOs) .

[0057] For ease of understanding, hereinafter we will describe MOs with reference to FIG. 3. FIG. 3 illustrates an example timing diagram 300 of measurement occasions for scheduling assistant information (SAI) in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 3, the first SSB may correspond to MO1, the PDCCH scheduling Msg2 may correspond to MO2, the PDSCH of Msg2 may correspond to MO3, and the second SSB may correspond to MO4. Measurements related to channel quality may be performed at MO1 to MO4. Since there is limited time between Msg1 and Msg4 and limited MOs, the SAI may include limited measurement samples.

[0058] Alternatively or additionally, the information may comprise measurement results of downlink pathloss of the at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204. In this way, the downlink pathloss of the downlink reference signals could be used as the SAI. In some example embodiments, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise at least one SSB. That is to say, the downlink pathloss of the SSB could be measured as one kind of the SAI.

[0059] Alternatively or additionally, the information may comprise measurement results of channel quality information (CQI) of the at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204. In this way, the CQI of the downlink reference signals could be used as the SAI. In some example embodiments, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise at least one SSB. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise a DMRS of a PDCCH scheduling Msg2. Alternatively or additionally, the at least one downlink reference signal may comprise a DMRS of a PDSCH of Msg2. That is to say, the CQI of the SSB, the DMRS of a PDCCH scheduling Msg2 or the DMRS of a PDSCH of Msg2 could be measured as one kind of the SAI. As an example, the CQI reported by the terminal device 202 may have a size of four bits, and all existing CQI index values in 3GPP standards can be used for the reporting. As an another example, the CQI reported by the terminal device 202 may have a size of lower than four bits, wherein the CQI is a restricted version of a CQI using 4 bits and focuses only part of the existing CQI indexes. In some example embodiments, under an assumption that the terminal device 202 is operating at low signal to interference plus noise ratio (SNR) conditions, only the low CQI index values (among all the existing CQI index values) are used. For example, for a 2 bit restricted CQI,  the values of the CQI index that can be used by the UE for the SAI are the values 0 to 3 or the values 1 to 4.

[0060] In some example embodiments, the information may comprise one of at least one coarse level of at least one quantity value. For an example, the at least one coarse level may comprise a high level, a medium level and a low level. In this way, the terminal device 202 may report one coarse level of the measurement results as the SAI to the network device 204, the network device 204 may schedule the transmission of Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB with proper resources based on the reported coarse levels, thereby reducing signaling overhead for transmitting the SAI. For example, the network device 204 may select different MCS based on different coarse levels. Alternatively or additionally, the information may comprise one of at least one high resolution value. In some example embodiments, the high resolution value may be a dB value of DL-RSRP or downlink pathloss. In this way, the terminal device 202 may report a high resolution value, which is more accurate than the coarse level, as the SAI to the network device 204, thereby achieving more accurate scheduling of transmission of Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB.

[0061] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 may determine the one of the at least one coarse level of the at least one quantity value to be transmitted based on at least one first threshold, wherein a number of the at least one coarse level equals to a number of the at least first threshold plus one. As an example, the at least one first threshold may comprise a threshold A and a threshold B, and the threshold A is lower than the threshold B. The terminal device 202 may determine a low level is to be transmitted based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is not higher than the threshold A.Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 202 may determine a medium level is to be transmitted based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is higher than the threshold A but lower than the threshold B. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 202 may determine a high level is to be transmitted based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is not lower than the threshold B.

[0062] For ease of understanding, hereinafter we will describe an example method for calculating the coarse level to be reported to the network device 204. The coarse level may be derived based on an average signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of at least one downlink reference signal. The SINR may be calculated based on the following equation (1) :

[0063] wherein k represents a k-th subcarrier, K represents a total number of subcarriers, the SINR for a k-th subcarrier may be calculated based on the following equation (2) :

[0064] wherein H represent a channel gain matrix for all inputs with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) with zero mean and variance σ2, HH represents a conjugate transpose of H, hk represents k-th column of H,  represents a conjugate transpose of hk, and I represents an identity matrix.

[0065] In one example continuation of this method, the estimated SNR or SINR is then directly compared to the at least one first thresholds as described above.

[0066] In another example continuation of this method, at least one efficiency value Esc may be taken as the at least one quantity value, which may be calculated based on the SINR using the following equation (3) : Esc=log2 (1+SINRk)          (3)

[0067] The at least one coarse level may be mapped to the efficiency value Esc as shown in Table I. As can be seen, the threshold A may be of a value of 1 and the threshold B may be of a value of 3. When Esc≤1, a low level will be determined to be reported to the network device 204; when 1<Esc<3, a medium level will be determined to be reported to the network device 204; and when Esc≥3, a high level will be determined to be reported to the network device 204.

[0068] Table I. Correspondence between SAI coarse level and efficiency value

[0069] It should be understood that the above solution containing two thresholds and three coarse levels are just an example, the present disclosure also cover other solution containing other numbers of thresholds and coarse levels. For example, there may be 1 threshold and 2 coarse levels, or 3 thresholds and 4 coarse levels, etc.

[0070] In some example embodiments, the at least one first threshold may be received from the network device 204 via a broadcast information (e.g., a system information block 1 (SIB1) ) . At the same time, in a reverse direction, the network device 204 may transmit, to the terminal device 202, the at least one first threshold via the broadcast information (i.e., the SIB1) . Alternatively or additionally, the at least one first threshold may be preconfigured, e.g., by the network device 204 or the specification. The at least one first threshold may be preconfigured per SSB beam and / or the terminal device 202’s elevation angle.

[0071] In some example embodiments, the information may comprise a repetition indication for transmission of message 4 (Msg4) of the random access procedure to be performed in a repetition manner. The network device 204 may transmit the Msg4 / MsgB / Msg2 to the terminal device 202 in the repetition manner. The repetition indication may comprise a number of repetitions, a repetition factor or a codepoint to a configured table of repetition factors. The repetition factor represents a repetition index corresponding to a certain repetition number. For example, the terminal device 202 may use the repetition indication to request a certain number of repetitions of the transmission of the Msg4 / MsgB / Msg2 from the network device 204 based on its receiver’s capability. The terminal device 202 may use 2 bits to request 1, 2, 4 or 8 repetitions via a codepoint, e.g. the codepoints (00, 01, 10, 11) may correspond to the 1, 2, 4 or 8 repetitions. The repetition indication may comprise an indication on whether repetitions need to be enabled. For example, the terminal device 202 may use the repetition indication to indicate that it needs Msg4 repetitions for reliable decoding of the Msg4.

[0072] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 may transmit the information via message 3 (Msg3) . In some example embodiments, the information may be carried in at least one reserved bit in an uplink common control channel (UL-CCCH) or uplink common control channel 1 (UL-CCCH1) message contained in the Msg3. In this way,  the reserved / spare bits in the UL-CCCH or UL-CCCH1 message contained in the Msg3 could be used for transmitting the SAI. Alternatively or additionally, the information may be carried in at least one reserved bit in a medium access control (MAC) sub-header of the Msg3. In this way, the reserved / spare bits in the MAC sub-header the Msg3 could be used for transmitting the SAI. Alternatively or additionally, the information may be carried in an extended media access control (MAC) control element (CE) having an independent logical channel identifier (LCID) of the Msg3. In this way, an extended MAC CE having an independent LCID could be used for transmitting the SAI. It should be noted that these example embodiments for Msg3 also apply for message A (MsgA) .

[0073] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 may transmit the information via message 1 (Msg1) . Specifically, for example, the terminal device 202 may indicate, to the network device 204, the information by selection of a specific physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble and / or a specific random access channel (RACH) occasion. For an instance, if the terminal device 202 selects a specific PRACH preamble or a specific RACH occasion, the network device 204 may know that the Msg4 / Msg2 needs to be transmitted in a repetition number of 2. It should be noted that these example embodiments for Msg1 also apply for message A (MsgA) .

[0074] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 may determine to transmit the information based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is lower than a second threshold. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 202 may determine not to transmit the information based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is not lower than a second threshold. As an example, the second threshold may be received from the network device 204 via a broadcast information (e.g., a system information block (SIB) ) . At the same time, in a reverse direction, the network device 204 may transmit, to the terminal device 202, the second threshold via the broadcast information (e.g., the SIB) for determination of the terminal device 202 of whether or not to transmit the information. Alternatively or additionally, the second threshold may be preconfigured, e.g., by the network device 204 or the specification. The second threshold may be preconfigured per SSB beam and / or the terminal device 202’s elevation angle. In some example embodiments, the network device 204 may determine the second threshold based on the terminal device 202’s minimum requirements for receiving the PDSCH. In this way, the terminal device 202 will be allowed to report the SAI when the measurement result of the at least one downlink reference signal is under a certain threshold, which could avoid  the terminal device 202 in good channel conditions to provide the SAI when it is unnecessary, thereby further saving the signaling overhead and improve the system efficiency.

[0075] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 may receive, from the network device 204, a first indication indicating whether transmission of the information is enabled or disabled. At the same time, in a reverse direction, the network device 204 may transmit, to the terminal device 202, the first indication indicating whether transmission of the information is enabled or disabled. Then, the terminal device 202 may determine whether or not to transmit the information based on the first indication. In this way, whether or not the terminal device 202 to report the SAI could be selectively enabled or disabled based on the first indication.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the first indication may be carried in downlink control information (DCI) format 1-0, scheduling Msg2, with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) scrambled by radio access network temporary identifier (RA-RNTI) . The first indication may be carried in at least one reserved bits of the DCI format 1-0. In this way, the SAI report could be enabled or disabled based on the DCI format 1-0 with CRC scrambled by RA-RNTI. Alternatively or additionally, the first indication may be carried in the Msg2. As an instance, part of signaling payload or the reserved bits of the PDSCH carrying the Msg2 may be used for carrying the first indication.

[0077] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 may transmit, to the network device 204, an indication of a first capability of transmitting the information of the terminal device 202. At the same time, in a reverse direction, the network device 204 may receive, from the terminal device 202, an indication of a first capability of transmitting the information of the terminal device 202. That is to say, the SAI report functionality is restricted by the capability of the terminal device 202, thus there may be a need to report the terminal device 202’s capability of the SAI report functionality to the network device 204. In some example embodiments, the first capability of transmitting the information may be indicated by a selection of a specific physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble and / or a specific random access channel (RACH) occasion for Msg1. Alternatively or additionally, the first capability of transmitting the information may be indicated by at least one reserved bit of signaling payload in Msg3. Alternatively or additionally, the first capability of transmitting the information may be indicated by a DMRS for physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) carrying Msg3. Alternatively or additionally, the first capability of transmitting the information may be indicated by a selection of a specific LCID value of Msg3. Alternatively  or additionally, the first capability of transmitting the information may be same as a second capability of supporting Msg4 enhancement of the terminal device 202, and the first capability of transmitting the information may be indicated by an indication of a second capability of supporting Msg4 enhancement of the terminal device 202. Conversely, the indication of the first capability of transmitting the information may further indicate a second capability of supporting Msg4 enhancement of the terminal device 202. It should be noted that these example embodiments for Msg1 / Msg3 / Msg4 also apply for MsgA / MsgB.

[0078] In some example embodiments, the first capability of transmitting the information may be different from the second capability of supporting Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement of the terminal device 202. The first capability of transmitting the information may be conditioned based on the second capability of supporting Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement. For example, if the terminal device 202 does not report the second capability of supporting Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement, the network device 204 will not expect the terminal device 202 to report the first capability of SAI report. In other words, if the terminal device 202 does not support Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement (e.g., the terminal device 202 does not support decoding the Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB transmitted in a repetition number of 2) , even if the terminal device 202 reports the SAI, the SAI cannot be used for Msg4 or MsgB enhancement. Therefore, it would save unnecessary signaling overhead for the terminal device 202 not to report the first capability of transmitting the information if it does not report the second capability of supporting Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement.

[0079] In some example embodiments, different LCID values may be associated with the capabilities reporting. The terminal device 202 may indicate, to the network device 204, that the terminal device 202 has the first capability of transmitting the information but does not have the second capability of supporting Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement based on a first LCID value. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 202 may indicate, to the network device 204, that the terminal device 202 does not have the first capability of transmitting the information but have the second capability of supporting Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement based on a second LCID value. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 202 may indicate, to the network device 204, that the terminal device 202 has the first capability of transmitting the information and the second capability of supporting Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB enhancement based on a third LCID value.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 may transmit, to the network device 204, an indication of whether the SAI is present in the Msg3 payload or not  based on selection / usage of a specific LCID value. For example, one LCID value may indicate that the terminal device 202 included SAI in the Msg3 payload whereas another LCID values may indicate that the terminal device 202 did not include SAI in the Msg3 payload.

[0081] By implementing the embodiments described with reference to FIG. 2 and FIG. 3, terminal device assistant downlink transmission of a random access procedure is supported. With the embodiments as described above, the terminal device 202 could report different kinds of SAI to the network device 204, and the network device 204 can schedule the downlink transmission of a random access procedure (e.g., Msg4 / Msg2 / MsgB transmission) using the SAI in a dynamic and flexible manner, thereby achieving high efficient downlink transmission of the random access procedure, improving the efficiency and capacity of the system, and realizing downlink coverage enhancement.

[0082] FIG. 4 illustrates an example signaling process 400 of UE assistant Msg4 transmission in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2.

[0083] As shown in FIG. 4, the process 400 may involve a UE 402 and a gNB 404. The UE 402 could be the terminal device 102 in FIG. 1 or the terminal device 202 in FIG. 2, and the gNB 404 could be the network device 104 in FIG. 1 or the network device 204 in FIG. 2.

[0084] At 410, the gNB 404 transmits at least one SSB to the UE 402.

[0085] At 415, the gNB 404 configures the level threshold (s) for SAI, e.g., via system information block 1 (SIB1) . If taking the DL-RSRP as an example of the SAI, the gNB 404 may configured two level thresholds and three coarse levels. Specifically, the gNB 404 may set Level-High in a range of [-∞, -90dB] , Level-Medium in a range of [-90dB, -110dB] and Level-Low in a range of [-110dB, +∞] .

[0086] At 420, the UE 402 measures DL-RSRP or downlink pathloss based on the at least one SSB.

[0087] At 425, the UE 402 indicates a capability of SAI reporting of itself to the gNB 404 by selection of a specific physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble and / or a specific random access channel (RACH) occasion via Msg1.

[0088] At 430, the gNB 404 enables the SAI reporting functionality of the UE 402 via a PDCCH for scheduling Msg2 or at least one reserved bits in a PDSCH conveying Msg2. The  gNB 404 may enable the SAI reporting functionality based on pre-configuration. Alternatively, the gNB 404 may enable the SAI reporting functionality based on detection of a PRACH preamble and / or a specific RACH occasion indicating the capability of SAI reporting.

[0089] At 440, the UE 402 reports SAI via Msg3. For example, the UE 402 may report a codepoint (e.g., one of codepoints 8 to 13) of the SAI via an extended MAC CE as shown in Table II.

[0090] Table II: Values of LCID for UL-SCH when the LX field is set to 1

[0091] - LCID: The Logical Channel ID field identifies the logical channel instance of the corresponding MAC SDU or the type of the corresponding MAC CE or padding for the DL-SCH and for the UL-SCH. There is one LCID field per MAC sub-header. The size of the LCID field is 6 bits.

[0092] - LX: The LCID extension field indicates the use of extended LCID space. The size of the LX field is 1 bit. The LX field set to 1 indicates the use of Table II, otherwise R bit is present instead (i.e. set to 0) ;

[0093] - R: Reserved bit, set to 0.

[0094] For another example, the UE 402 may report the Level-High or Level-Low using a spare bit in a RRCSetupRequest-IEs field in a RRCSetupRequest message. FIG. 5A illustrates an example diagram 500A of a RRCSetupRequest-IEs field in a RRCSetupRequest message in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As can be seen, there is a spare bit in the RRCSetupRequest-IEs field. FIG. 5B illustrates an example diagram 500B of a RRCSetupRequest-IEs field in a RRCSetupRequest message in accordance with some other example embodiments of the present disclosure. As can be seen, the spare bit in FIG. 5A is used as a schedulingAssistantInformation field in FIG. 5B for SAI  reporting. If the schedulingAssistantInformation field is set to “0” , it may indicate Level-Low. Otherwise, if schedulingAssistantInformation field is set to “1” , it may indicate Level-High.

[0095] Referring back to FIG. 4, at 445, the gNB 404 schedules transmission of Msg4 with the SAI. At 450, the gNB 404 transmits a PDCCH for scheduling Msg4 to the UE 402. At 455, the gNB 404 transmits Msg4 to the UE 402.

[0096] By implementing the embodiments described with reference to FIG. 4, the UE 402 could report different coarse levels of SAI to the gNB 404, and the gNB 404 can schedule the transmission of Msg4 using the coarse levels in a dynamic and flexible manner, thereby achieving high efficient Msg4 transmission, improving the efficiency and capacity of the system, and realizing downlink coverage enhancement.

[0097] FIG. 6 illustrates an example signaling process 600 of UE assistant Msg4 transmission in accordance with some other example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process 600 will be described with reference to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2.

[0098] As shown in FIG. 6, the process 600 may involve a UE 602 and a gNB 604. The UE 602 could be the terminal device 102 in FIG. 1 or the terminal device 202 in FIG. 2, and the gNB 604 could be the network device 104 in FIG. 1 or the network device 204 in FIG. 2.

[0099] At 610, the gNB 604 transmits at least one SSB to the UE 602.

[0100] At 615, the gNB 604 configures / enables a functionality of SAI based repetition request, i.e., a functionality of the UE 602 reporting a request for a repetition number factor for Msg4. The gNB 604 may configures / enables the functionality of SAI based repetition request via SIB1.

[0101] At 620, the UE 602 measures DL-RSRP or downlink pathloss based on the at least one SSB.

[0102] At 625, the UE 602 indicates a capability of repetition reporting of itself to the gNB 604 by selection of a specific physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble and / or a specific random access channel (RACH) occasion via Msg1.

[0103] At 630, the gNB 604 enables the measurement based repetition request via a PDCCH for scheduling Msg2 or at least one reserved bits in a PDSCH conveying Msg2.

[0104] At 635, the UE 602 reports to the gNB 604 the number of repetitions (e.g., equals to 2) based on measurements. For example, the UE 602 may determine the number of repetitions by mapping the estimated DL-SINR to its own BLER curves for DL PDSCH and deriving the number of repetitions that satisfies a certain BLER (e.g., 10%) .

[0105] At 640, the gNB 604 schedules transmission of Msg4 with the number of repetitions reported by the UE 602. At 645, the gNB 604 transmits a PDCCH for scheduling Msg4 with the repetition number of 2 to the UE 602. At 650a and 650b, the gNB 604 transmits Msg4 twice to the UE 602.

[0106] By implementing the embodiments described with reference to FIG. 6, the UE 602 could report a repetition number request to the gNB 604, and the gNB 604 can schedule the transmission of Msg4 with the repetition number, thereby enhancing the reliability of Msg4 transmission.

[0107] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a terminal device (for example, a terminal device 102, a terminal device 202, a UE 402 or a UE 602) in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 202 with reference to FIG. 2.

[0108] At block 710, the terminal device 202 determines an information based on at least one downlink channel condition. At block 720, the terminal device 202 transmits, to the network device 204, the information in a random access procedure.

[0109] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 is further caused to: receive, from the network device 204, message 4 (Msg4) of the random access procedure, wherein transmission of the Msg4 is scheduled based on the information.

[0110] In some example embodiments, the information comprises measurement results related to channel quality of at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204.

[0111] In some example embodiments, the information comprises measurement results of downlink reference signal receiving power (DL-RSRP) of the at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204.

[0112] In some example embodiments, the at least one downlink reference signal comprises at least one of the following: at least one synchronization signal and physical broadcast  channel block (SSB) ; a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) of a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) ; a DMRS of a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) scheduling message 2 (Msg2) ; or a DMRS of a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of message 2 (Msg2) .

[0113] In some example embodiments, the information comprises measurement results of downlink pathloss of the at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204.

[0114] In some example embodiments, the at least one downlink reference signal comprises at least one SSB.

[0115] In some example embodiments, the information comprises measurement results of channel quality information (CQI) of the at least one downlink reference signal from the network device 204.

[0116] In some example embodiments, the CQI, which uses less than four bits, is a restricted version of a CQI using four bits.

[0117] In some example embodiments, the at least one downlink reference signal comprises at least one of the following: at least one SSB; a DMRS of a PDCCH scheduling Msg2; or a DMRS of a PDSCH of Msg2.

[0118] In some example embodiments, the information comprises at least one of the following: one of at least one coarse level of at least one quantity value; or one of at least one high resolution value.

[0119] In some example embodiments, the at least one coarse level comprises a high level, a medium level and a low level.

[0120] In some example embodiments, the information comprises a repetition indication for transmission of message 4 (Msg4) of the random access procedure to be performed in a repetition manner.

[0121] In some example embodiments, the repetition indication comprises a number of repetitions or a repetition factor.

[0122] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 is caused to transmit the information via message 3 (Msg3) .

[0123] In some example embodiments, the information is carried in at least one of the following: at least one reserved bit in an uplink common control channel (UL-CCCH) or uplink common control channel 1 (UL-CCCH1) message contained in the Msg3; at least one  reserved bit in a medium access control (MAC) sub-header of the Msg3; or an extended media access control (MAC) control element (CE) having an independent logical channel identifier (LCID) of the Msg3.

[0124] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 is caused to transmit the information via message 1 (Msg1) .

[0125] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 is caused to transmit the information via message 1 (Msg1) by: indicating, to the network device 204, the information by selection of a specific physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble and / or a specific random access channel (RACH) occasion.

[0126] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 is further caused to: determine the one of the at least one coarse level of the at least one quantity value to be transmitted based on at least one first threshold, wherein a number of the at least one coarse level equals to a number of the at least first threshold plus one.

[0127] In some example embodiments, the at least one first threshold comprises a threshold A and a threshold B, the threshold A is lower than the threshold B, and the terminal device 202 is caused to determine the one of the at least one coarse level of the at least one quantity value to be transmitted based on at least one first threshold by at least one of the following: determine a low level is to be transmitted based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is not higher than the threshold A; determine a medium level is to be transmitted based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is higher than the threshold A but lower than the threshold B; or determine a high level is to be transmitted based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is not lower than the threshold B.

[0128] In some example embodiments, the at least one first threshold is received from the network device 204 via a system information block 1 (SIB1) or preconfigured. In other words, the network device 204 transmits, to the terminal device 202, the at least one first threshold via a system information block 1 (SIB1) .

[0129] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 202 is further caused to: determine to transmit the information based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is lower than a second threshold; or determine not to transmit the information based on measurement results of at least one downlink reference signal is not lower than a second threshold.
