[0028] This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0029] As used herein, the term “communication network” or “communication system” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as New Radio (NR) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) , Narrow Band Internet of  Things (NB-IoT) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device in the communication system may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0030] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, a low power node such as a femto node, a pico node, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology.

[0031] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a  device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0032] Principle and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Reference is first made to Fig. 1, which illustrates an example communication system 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The communication system 100 may include one or more terminal devices, such as a terminal device 110, and one or more network devices, such as a network device 120 which serves an area 121 (also called as a cell 121) using different frequency bands in both DL and UL. The terminal device 110 is capable of connecting and communicating in the UL and DL with the network device 120 as long as the terminal device 110 being located within the corresponding cell 121. In communication systems, an UL refers to a link in a direction from a terminal device 110 to a network device 120, and a DL refers to a link in a direction from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110. In particular, the DL may include DL control channels such as the Physical DL Control Channel (PDCCH) to transmit control information from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110. The DL may further include DL data channels such as the Physical DL Shared Channel (PDSCH) to transmit data from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110. For example, the second device 120 may transmit the DL control information (DCI) on the PDCCH, which includes the resource allocation information, the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , the HARQ associated with the PDSCH, and the bandwidth part (BWP) where the traffic is scheduled. By decoding the DCI, the terminal device 110 may then correctly receive the transmission at certain PDSCH occasions. Similarly, the UL may include UL control channels such as the Physical UL Control Channel (PUCCH) to transmit control information from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120. The UL may further include UL data channels such as the Physical UL Shared Channel (PUSCH) to transmit data from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120.

[0033] The network device 120 may include a number of antennas and support multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies including for example spatial multiplexing, beam-forming and / or transmit diversity. The terminal device 110 may have multiple antenna ports which correspond to different communication channels, and channel quality for one antenna port may be different from that for another. To facilitate  estimation of each channel from an antenna port of the terminal device 110 to the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may be configured to transmit SRSs on SRS resources (e.g. one or more OFDM symbols where the SRSs are transmitted) to the network device 120, and the number of the SRSs and / or the SRS resources may be determined based on the number of antenna ports. The network device 120 may measure the channel quality based on the received SRSs.

[0034] It is to be understood that the number of network devices and terminal devices of Fig. 1 is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The communication system 100 may include any suitable number of network devices and terminal devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0035] Current 3GPP specifications has regulated UL MIMO for 1, 2, 4 or 8 UL TX antennas. NR has specified SRS resource configuration, in which both the SRS power control and the Transmitted Precoding Matrix Indicator (TPMI) applicability are configured per-SRS resource.

[0036] For example, 3GPP NR Rel-15 UL MIMO supports 1, 2, 4 uplink TX antennas. Both codebook based and non-codebook-based transmission schemes are supported for coherent TX, partial coherent TX, and non-coherent TX.

[0037] 3GPP NR Rel-18 UL MIMO supports 8 uplink TX antennas. Codebooks for 8 UL TX antennas were specified for coherent TX, partial coherent TX, and non-coherent TX.

[0038] Based on the Rel-19 WID RP-234007, supporting 3TX UL transmission is being studied for non-coherent UEs. The justification for supporting 3TX on UL is as follows:

[0039] NR supports 1-port, 2-port, 4-port and 8-port PUSCH. Nonetheless, current commercial mobile UEs are generally equipped with only 1 or 2 TX antennas. To enhance the UL performance and anticipating advancements in hardware and design technology, the emergence of UEs equipped with 3 TX antennas is a foreseeable development in the near future. Consequently, it is advantageous to augment the NR standards to support 3-port PUSCH supporting up to 3 layers.

[0040] To support UL 3TX transmission, the following agreements made in RAN1#116 should be considered, which will be decided in RAN#116bis. Here, TX means transmitting, and 3TX transmission means three transmitting antennas or antenna ports transmission.

[0041] Agreement (1)

[0042] For SRS configuration supporting codebook-based UL transmission by a 3TX UE, down-select one of

[0043] Alt1 -Support configuration of X 4-port SRS resources in a resource set where one the ports is muted

[0044] Alt2 -Support configuration of X SRS resources with equal / unequal number of ports (e.g. 2 + 1 or 1 + 1 + 1) in a resource set.

[0045] The value for X is for further study, and it will be determined according to the selected alternative.

[0046] Agreement (2)

[0047] For a 3-antenna-port codebook-based UL transmission, study power split for each port of SRS and PUSCH.

[0048] Agreement (3)

[0049] For SRS configuration supporting codebook-based UL transmission by a 3TX UE, one SRS resource set is configured for single TRP (transmission and reception point) operation.

[0050] The configuration and management of SRS resources for UL 3TX SRS transmission should be designed with the constraints imposed by the Rel-19 work item, the agreements from RAN1#116bis, and the constraints contained in the NR-MIMO framework.

[0051] In the agreements from RAN1#116 listed above, several options have provided for configuring SRS resources for 3TX SRS transmission, however, they all have various advantages and disadvantages.

[0052] For example, for the Agreement (1) above, Alt 1 proposes the idea of supporting one or more 4-port SRS resources with one port being muted. If more than one SRS resource is used, SRI feedback will be necessary, but the TPMI would be applicable to the SRS resource selected by the SRI. For Alt 2, the proposal is to support the configuration of multiple SRS resources with equal and / or unequal numbers of ports per SRS resource. The (1+1+1) option in Alt 2 involves the configuration of three single-port SRS resources and the three SRS resources are transmitted in a TDM fashion, where all three single-port SRS resources can be transmitted with full UE TX power (because there would be no  splitting of the total TX power across the multiple UE SRS ports within a single OFDM symbol) . The (2+1) option in Alt 2 involves the configuration of a single two-port SRS resource and a single one-port SRS resource, where the two-port SRS resource shares the total UE TX power. However, the one-port SRS resource would need to be transmitted at half power if it is to have the same TX power as the two-port SRS resource. An advantage of the Alt 2 option is that no SRS port muting is needed, which means no SRS resources are wasted. A possible advantage of using the 2+1 option over the 1+1+1 option is the use of 2 symbols rather than 3 symbols, plus an even number of symbols is probably easier to manage. However, in the Alt 2 option, multiple SRS resources are used rather than a single SRS resource, which may cause the following problems given certain existing assumptions present in the NR MIMO framework:

[0053] Problem 1: Currently in NR, SRS power control is setup on a per SRS resource basis. Therefore, since Alt 2 requires multiple SRS resources, according to the current NR specification, it would require multiple SRS power control settings (one per SRS resource) , which would be inefficient since the same settings would likely be used across all resources being used for UL 3TX operation.

[0054] Problem 2: PMI (DL) and TPMI (UL) are assumed to be applicable to the ports within one resource (CSI-RS for DL, SRS for UL) and not applicable to ports that belong to multiple resources. Generally in NR, the channels measured from ports belonging to different resources (CSI-RS or SRS) are not assumed to be phase coherent, which means that the channel measured on ports that span multiple CSI-RS or SRS resources cannot be assumed to stay coherent between the time of the measurement and the time of the data transmission (which means the PMI (DL) or TPMI (UL) would be unreliable) . Therefore, the Alt 2 option goes against this basic assumption in NR.

[0055] To aim to at least one of the above problems, there is providing a solution for SRS resource management for 3TX SRS transmission. In the solution, a network device may determine an SRS resource configuration for a terminal device that supports UL 3TX transmission, and the terminal device may receive the SRS resource configuration and transmit SRSs according to the SRS resource configuration. Depending on the SRS resource configuration, the solution may have several sub-solutions as described below.

[0056] Reference is now made to Fig. 2, which shows a process 200 of SRS resource management for 3TX SRS transmission according to some example embodiments of the  present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 as illustrated in Fig. 1.

[0057] In the process 200, at block 210, the terminal device 110 may indicate to the network device 120 that the terminal device 110 may support UL 3TX transmission. As described above, the current commercial terminal devices are usually equipped with only one or two TX antennas, and there may probably that the communication system 100 should support both conventional 1TX and 2TX terminal devices and upcoming 3TX terminal devices if terminal devices with 3TX antennas are developed. Therefore, to facilitate the network device 120 to perform the SRS resource configuration for the terminal device 110 with 3TX antennas, the terminal device 110 should first inform the network device 120 its ability of supporting UL 3TX transmission.

[0058] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate this information via any legacy information element that is used to transmit its capability information to the base station. For example, the information element may be embedded in the Radio Resource Control (RRC) Connection Request transmitted from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 to request establishment or reestablishment of the RRC connection between the terminal device 110 and the network device 120.

[0059] In some other embodiments, the terminal device 110 may indicate this information via a newly designed information element that is embedded in legacy UL messages or new UL messages developed in further releases of the standards.

[0060] At block 220, the network device 120 may determine an SRS resource configuration for SRS transmission of the terminal device 110 in response to reception of the above information element from the terminal device 110 at block 210. In addition to SRS resources allocated to the terminal device 110, the SRS resource configuration may further indicate the terminal device 110 how to determine its SRS transmitting powers and how to determine the TPMI to be used.

[0061] In some embodiments, in the block 220 or in a separate block following the block 220 (not shown) , the network device 120 may further determine an SRS power control configuration for the SRS resource configuration. The SRS power control configuration may be a part of the SRS resource configuration or may be separately configured. In the SRS power control configuration, the network device 120 may configure an SRS power  control setting for any one SRS resource, such as the first SRS resource, in the SRS resource configuration such that the terminal device 110 may use the same SRS power control setting for all ports that belong to all SRS resources contained in the SRS resource configuration. In this manner, the same SRS power control setting may be applied to the whole SRS resource configuration of the terminal device 110, which eliminates the need of configuring respective SRS power settings for respective SRS resources in the whole SRS resource configuration.

[0062] In some embodiments, the SRS resource configuration may include an SRS resource set containing two or more SRS resources and an indicator indicating whether a 3TX SRS scheme is used for the terminal device 110. The indicator may be a binary bit that is set to true or false, for example. Here, the 3TX SRS scheme means that all ports of the SRS resources in the SRS resource set are to be treated as if they belong to one SRS resource for the purpose of SRS power control and TPMI applicability. That is, the SRS power control and the TPMI applicability is configured per SRS resource set rather than per SRS resource. If the indicator is set to true, it may indicate that the terminal device 110 should apply the 3TX SRS scheme. Otherwise, if the indicator is set to false, it may indicate that the terminal device 110 should apply a legacy SRS scheme, i.e., a legacy SRS scheme in which the SRS power control and TPMI applicability is configured per SRS resource. In this manner, an explicit indicator may be provided to indicate whether a 3TX SRS scheme should be used by the terminal device 110.

[0063] In some other embodiments, rather than an explicit indicator, the SRS resource configuration may implicitly indicate whether the 3TX SRS scheme should be used by the terminal device 110. In particular, the SRS resource configuration may include an SRS resource set containing two or more SRS resources and each of the SRS resources is configured for a number of ports of the terminal device 110. If total number of ports across all SRS resources within the SRS resource set is equal to three, it may indicate that the terminal device 110 should use the 3TX SRS scheme. Otherwise, if total number of ports across all SRS resources within the SRS resource set is not equal to three, it may indicate that the terminal device 110 should use a legacy SRS scheme, i.e., a legacy SRS scheme in which the SRS power control and TPMI applicability is configured per SRS resource. In this manner, no additional information such as an explicit indicator should be added to indicate whether a 3TX SRS scheme should be used by the terminal device 110, which may reduce the signalling overhead.

[0064] In some alternative embodiments, at block 220, the SRS resource configuration may include a specific SRS 3TX resource that is constructed from two or more 1TX and / or 2TX SRS resources. Here, the SRS 3TX resource is named specifically for the 3TX SRS transmission and it may be named otherwise arbitrarily. By defining such a SRS 3TX resource, all legacy assumptions may be used by considering the “SRS 3TX resource” as “SRS resource” . In this manner, the SRS resource configuration may also imply that the terminal device 110 should use the 3TX SRS scheme as described above.

[0065] Then, at block 230, the network device 120 may transmit the SRS resource configuration determined at block 220 to the terminal device 110.

[0066] Depending on different types of SRS resource configuration, the SRS resource configuration may be transmitted by different DL messages such as RRC messages, MAC CE (Media Access Control-Control Element) , or DCI (Downlink Control Information) . For example, if the SRS resource configuration indicates a periodic SRS resource configuration, it may be transmitted via RRC, and once configured, the SRS resources in the SRS resource configuration are transmitted periodically (based on periodicity and offset RRC parameters) . If the SRS resource configuration indicates a semi-persistent SRS resource configuration, it may be transmitted via MAC CE, and once configured, the SRS resources in the SRS resource configuration are transmitted periodically (based on periodicity and offset RRC parameters) until another MAC-CE deactivates the semi-persistent SRS resource configuration. If the SRS resource configuration indicates an aperiodic SRS resource configuration, it may be transmitted via different DCI formats, including DL DCI formats (1_1 or 1_2) or UL DCI formats (0_1 or 0_2) or DCI format (2_3) .

[0067] In some embodiments, if the SRS power control configuration as stated above is determined, the SRS power control configuration may also be transmitted to the terminal device 110. Similarly, the SRS power control configuration may be transmitted to the terminal device 110 in the same way as that of the SRS resource configuration.

[0068] At block 240, the terminal device 110 may transmit SRSs to the network device 120 according to the SRS resource configuration received at block 230.

[0069] In some embodiments, if the terminal device 110 receives the SRS power control configuration including the SRS power control setting for any one SRS resource in the SRS resource configuration, the terminal device 110 may transmit the SRSs to the network  device 120 according to the SRS power control setting on all ports that belong to all SRS resources contained in the SRS resource configuration. In this manner, the terminal device 110 may use the same SRS power control setting on the whole SRS resource configuration, which eliminates the need of configuring respective SRS power settings for respective SRS resources in the whole SRS resource configuration. That is, it achieves SRS power control per SRS resource set.

[0070] In some other embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the SRS resource configuration includes an indicator indicating whether a 3TX SRS scheme is to be used for the terminal device.

[0071] If the terminal device 110 determines that the SRS resource configuration includes the indicator indicating the 3TX SRS scheme is to be used, the terminal device 110 may transmit the SRSs to the network device 120 according to the SRS power control setting on all ports that belong to all SRS resources contained in the SRS resource configuration. Furthermore, the terminal device 110 may use the TPMI transmitted from the network device 120 previously for all ports that belong to all SRS resources contained in the SRS resource configuration.

[0072] In some other embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether total number of ports across all SRS resources within the SRS resource configuration is equal to three.

[0073] If the terminal device 110 determines that total number of ports across all SRS resources within the SRS resource configuration is equal to three, the terminal device 110 may transmit the SRSs to the network device 120 according to the SRS power control setting on all ports that belong to all SRS resources contained in the SRS resource configuration. Furthermore, the terminal device 110 may use the TPMI transmitted from the network device 120 previously for all ports that belong to all SRS resources contained in the SRS resource configuration.

[0074] In some other embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the SRS resource configuration includes a specific SRS 3TX resource that is a combination of two or more 1 TX and / or 2TX SRS resources.

[0075] If the terminal device 110 determines that the SRS resource configuration includes the specific SRS 3TX resource, the terminal device 110 may transmit the SRSs according to the Alt 2 option. That is, for 1TX+1TX+1TX (i.e., three single port) SRS resources, the  terminal device 110 may transmit the SRSs according to the SRS power control setting on all 1TX ports belonging to the SRS 3TX resource, and for 1TX+2TX SRS resources, the terminal device 110 may transmit the SRSs according to the SRS power control setting on all 2TX ports and half of the SRS power control setting on all 1TX ports belonging to the SRS 3TX resource. Furthermore, the terminal device 110 may use one TPMI for all TX ports belonging to the SRS 3TX resource.

[0076] With the above embodiments, a novel solution is provided to support SRS management for 3TX SRS transmission, which may resolve at least one problem raised above.

[0077] In some example embodiments, an apparatus is provided capable of performing the above process 200. The apparatus may include means for receiving, at a network device, an information element from a terminal device indicating that the terminal device supports UL 3TX transmission; means for determining an SRS resource configuration for SRS transmission of the terminal device; and means for transmitting the SRS resource configuration to the terminal device. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0078] In some example embodiments, the apparatus may include means for indicating, at a terminal device, to a network device that the terminal device supports UL 3TX transmission; means for receiving a Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) resource configuration for SRS transmission of the terminal device from the network device, and means for transmitting SRSs to the network device according to the SRS resource configuration.. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.
