[0003] The present invention relates to packaging, to article carriers and blanks for forming the same. More specifically, but not exclusively, the invention relates to a package comprising a plurality of carriers of the top-gripping type having one or more apertures for receiving and retaining an article therein.

[0005] In the field of packaging, it is known to provide cartons for carrying multiple articles. Cartons are well known in the art and are useful for enabling consumers to transport, store and access a group of articles for consumption. For cost and environmental considerations, such cartons or carriers need to be formed from as little material as possible and cause as little wastage in the materials from which they are formed as possible. Further considerations are the strength of the carton and its suitability for holding and transporting large weights of articles. It is desirable that the contents of the carton are secure within the carton.
[0006] It is well known to provide top gripping article carriers in which an aperture is formed in a panel of the carrier, wherein tabs are struck from said panel and are arranged about the aperture. The tabs are displaced out of the plane of said panel when an article is received in the aperture, wherein said tabs engage the article generally about a flange or lip of the article.
[0007] The present invention seeks to provide an improvement in the field of packaging, of cartons, typically formed from paperboard or the like, and apparatus for assembly of said cartons.

[0009] A first aspect of the present disclosure provides an article carrier for packaging at least one article. The article carrier comprises a plurality of panels including: a primary, a side panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, and an end panel hingedly connected to the primary panel. A first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel, a second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel and joined to the end panel. At least one of the first and second gusset panels has no portion thereof adjoined by an opening.

CLAIMS1 . An article carrier for packaging at least one article, the article carrier comprising a plurality of panels including: a primary panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, and an end panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, wherein a first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel, a second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel and joined to the end panel, and at least one of the first and second gusset panels has no portion thereof adjoined by an opening.
2. An article carrier according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the first and second gusset panels has an inner or upper end thereof contiguous with the primary panel through an uninterrupted area.
3. An article carrier according to claim 1, wherein the side and end panels are continuous with each other through an uninterrupted area.
4. An article carrier for packaging at least one article, the article carrier comprising a plurality of panels including: a primary panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, and an end panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, wherein a first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel, a second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel by a hinged connection and joined to the end panel, and the article carrier includes no cut or opening at such a location to interrupt the hinged connection.
5. An article carrier for packaging at least one article, the article carrier comprising a plurality of panels including: a primary panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, and an end panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, wherein a first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel by a first hinged connection, a second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel by a second hinged connection and joined to the end panel, the first and second hinged connections emanate from a common uninterrupted area of a blank from which the article carrier is formed.
6. An article carrier according to claim 5, wherein the primary panel has an article-receptacle next to a corner thereof defined by the side and end panels, a frangible line is disposed between the article-receptacle and the corner of the primary panel.
7. An article carrier for packaging a plurality of articles, the article carrier comprising an engaging panel having at least first and second adjacent article-receptacles, wherein the first article-receptacle comprises a plurality of first engaging teeth and a first toothless edge extending between two of the plurality of first engaging teeth, the second article-receptacle comprises a plurality of second engaging teeth and a second toothless edge extending between two of the plurality of second engaging teeth, the first and second toothless edges are disposed next to each other to define an engaging strip therebetween, and wherein the first toothless edge comprises a first length dimension and the second toothless edge comprises a second length dimension, the first length dimension is less than the second length dimension.

An article carrier for packaging a plurality of articles, the article carrier comprising an engaging panel having at least first and second adjacent article-receptacles, the article carrier comprising at least one side or end panel hingedly connected to the engaging panel by a first hinged connection, wherein the first and second articlereceptacles are arranged along the first hinged connection, the first hinged connection includes a severance line segment disposed at a position across from a space between the first and second article-receptacles, the severance line segment comprises a primary portion and at least one end portion extending from the primary portion and turning away from an adjacent one of the first and second article-receptacles, and wherein the at least one end portion terminates at a point spaced apart from any fold line provided in the at least one side or end panel.
9. An article carrier according to claim 8, wherein the at least one end portion stops short of a notional line (x-x), the notional line passing through the center of the adjacent one of the article-receptacles and being disposed perpendicularly to the primary portion of the severance line segment10. An article carrier according to claim 8, wherein the at least one end portion intersects a notional line (x-x), the notional line passing through the center of the adjacent one of the article-receptacles and being disposed perpendicularly to the primary portion of the severance line segment.
11. An article carrier for packaging at least one article, the article carrier comprising an engaging panel which comprises at least first and second adjacent article-receptacles and a first area defined in part by respective sections of the perimeters of the first and second article-receptacles, the respective sections of the perimeters divergently extending away from a narrower second area of the engaging panel between the first and second article-receptacles, wherein the first article-receptacle comprises a plurality of first engaging teeth including a first group of “N" tooth or teeth arranged in series between two toothless edges of the first article-receptacle, the second article-receptacle comprises a plurality of second engaging teeth including a second group of “M" teeth arranged in series between two toothless edges of the second article-receptacle, the first group of "N" tooth or teeth and the second group "M" teeth are foldably coupled to the first area, and wherein "N" is a positive integer greater than zero, “M is a positive integer greater than one and “N” and “M” are different integers12. An article carrier according to claim 11 , wherein the engaging panel further comprises third and fourth adjacent article-receptacles adjacent to the first and second article-receptacles, the first area being defined in part by respective sections of the perimeters of the first, second, third, and fourth article-receptacles.
13. An article carrier according to claim 11 , further comprising at least one side or end panel hingedly connected to the engaging panel by a first hinged connection, wherein the first and second article-receptacles are arranged along the first hinged connection, the first area is defined in part by the first hinged connection and the respective sections of the perimeters of the first and second article-receptacles.
14. An article carrier for packaging at least one article, the article carrier comprising a plurality of panels including an engaging panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the engaging panel by a first hinged connection, and an endpanel hingedly connected to the engaging panel by a second hinged connection, the engaging panel having a corner defined by the first and second hinged connections, or by notional extensions thereof, wherein the engaging panel comprises an article-receptacle adjacent to the corner, a frangible line is disposed between the articlereceptacle and the corner of the engaging panel.15 An article carrier for packaging at least one article, the article carrier comprising an engaging panel having a corner, the engaging panel comprising an article-receptacle adjacent to the corner, the article-receptacle comprising a plurality of engaging teeth which include a group of teeth disposed across from the corner, wherein the group of teeth is arranged in series between two toothless edges of the article-receptacle, at least an intermediate tooth of the group of teeth is defined by a pair of non-linear cuts having radially outer ends thereof curving toward each other.
16. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising a plurality of panels including: a primary panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, and an end panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, wherein a first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel, a second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel and joined to the end panel, at least one of the first and second gusset panels has no portion thereof adjoined by an opening.
17. A blank according to claim 16, wherein the at least one of the first and second gusset panels has an inner end thereof continuous with the primary panel via an uninterrupted area.
18. A blank according to claim 16, wherein the at least one of the first and second gusset panels is connected to the primary panel by an unbroken connection.
19. A blank according to claim 16, wherein the side and end panels are continuous with each other through an uninterrupted area.
20. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising a plurality of panels including: a primary panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, and an end panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, wherein a first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel, a second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel by a hinged connection and joined to the end panel, wherein the blank includes no cut or opening at such a location to interrupt the hinged connection.21 . A blank according to claim 20, wherein an inner end of the hinged connection terminates at an uninterrupted area of the blank, the uninterrupted area being disposed between the hinged connection and the primary panel.
22. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising a plurality of panels including: a primary panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, and an end panel hingedly connected to the primary panel, wherein a first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel by a first hinged connection and a second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel by a second hinged connection and to the end panel by a thirdhinged connection, the first, second, and third hinged connections emanate from a common uninterrupted area of the blank.
23. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising an engaging panel having at least first and second adjacent article-receptacles, the first article-receptacle comprising a plurality of first engaging teeth and a first toothless edge extending between two of the plurality of first engaging teeth, the second article-receptacle comprising a plurality of second engaging teeth and a second toothless edge extending between two of the plurality of second engaging teeth, wherein the first and second toothless edges are disposed next to each other to define an engaging strip therebetween, the first toothless edge comprises a first length dimension and the second toothless edge comprises a second length dimension, and wherein the first length dimension is less than the second length dimension.
24. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising an engaging panel having at least first and second adjacent article-receptacles, the blank further comprising at least one side or end panel hingedly connected to the engaging panel by a first hinged connection, the first and second article-receptacles being arranged along the first hinged connection, wherein the first hinged connection includes a severance line segment disposed at a position across from a space between the first and second article-receptacles, the severance line segment comprises a primary portion and at least one end portion, the at least one end portion extending from the primary portion and turning away from an adjacent one of the first and second article-receptacles, and wherein the at least one end portion stops short of any fold lines provided in the at least one side or end panel.
25. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising an engaging panel which comprises at least first and second adjacent article-receptacles and a first area defined in part by respective sections of the perimeters of the first and second article-receptacles, the respective sections of the perimeters divergently extending away from a narrower second area of the engaging panel between the first and second article-receptacles, the first articlereceptacle comprising a plurality of first engaging teeth including a first group of “N” tooth or teeth arranged in series between two toothless edges of the first article-receptacle, the second article-receptacle comprising a plurality of second engaging teeth including a second group of “M” teeth arranged in series between two toothless edges of the second article-receptacle, wherein the first group of "N" tooth or teeth and the second group "M" teeth are foldably coupled to the first area, and wherein "N" is a positive integer greater than zero, “M is a positive integer greater than one and “N” and “M” are different integers.
26. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising a plurality of panels including: an engaging panel, a side panel hingedly connected to the engaging panel by a first hinged connection, and an end panel hingedly connected to the engaging panel by a second hinged connection, the engaging panel having a corner defined by the first and second hinged connections, or by notional extensions thereof, wherein the engaging panel comprisesan article-receptacle adjacent to the corner, and wherein a frangible line is disposed between the article-receptacle and the corner of the engaging panel.
27. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising an engaging panel having a corner, the engaging panel comprising an article-receptacle adjacent to the corner, the article-receptacle comprising a plurality of engaging teeth which include a group of teeth disposed across from the corner, the group of teeth being arranged in series between two toothless edges of the article-receptacle, wherein at least an intermediate tooth of the group of teeth is defined by a pair of non-linear cuts having radially outer ends thereof curving toward each other.28 A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising an engaging panel which comprises at least first and second adjacent article-receptacles and a first area defined in part by respective sections of the perimeters of the first and second article-receptacles, the respective sections of the perimeters being disposed in opposition to each other with the first area therebetween, the first article-receptacle comprising a plurality of first engaging teeth including a first group of “N” tooth or teeth arranged in series between two toothless edges of the first articlereceptacle, the second article-receptacle comprising a plurality of second engaging teeth including a second group of “M” teeth arranged in series between two toothless edges of the second article-receptacle, wherein the first group of "N" tooth or teeth and the second group "M" teeth are foldably coupled to the first area, and wherein "N" is a positive integer greater than zero, "M is a positive integer greater than one and “N" and “M” are different integers.29 A blank according to claim 28, wherein the engaging panel further comprises a third article receptable and a fourth article receptacle, the first, second, third and fourth article receptacles are arranged in a matrix fashion wherein the first and third article receptacles forms a first row and the second and fourth article receptacles form a second row, and wherein the first and second article receptacles are diagonally opposed to each other.
30. A blank according to claim 19, wherein the uninterrupted area extends alongside a weakening line that defines a beveled corner of the primary panel at least in part.31 A blank according to claim 30, wherein the first gusset panel is hingedly connected to the side panel by a first hinged connection, the second gusset panel is hingedly connected to the first gusset panel by a second hinged connection and joined to the end panel, the first and second hinged connections emanate from the uninterrupted area.32 A blank according to claim 21 , wherein the uninterrupted area is disposed between the hinged connection and a weakening line that defines a beveled corner of the primary panel.
33. A blank according to claim 22, wherein the common uninterrupted area is disposed alongside a beveled corner of the primary panel.
