Abstract

Various aspects of the present disclosure relate to beam refinement for random access (RA). In an aspect, a UE transmits, to a network entity, a preamble among a set of preambles in a random access procedure. The UE receives, from the network entity, a random access response (RAR) comprising a plurality of demodulation reference signals (DMRSs). The plurality of DMRSs are received in a plurality of RAR resource subsets. The UE determines at least one of a downlink (DL) reception (Rx) beam or a DL transmission (Tx) beam for the random access procedure based on measurements on the plurality of DMRSs.

[0100] A network entity 102 may support communications with the core network 106, or with another network entity 102, or both. For example, a network entity 102 may interface with the core network 106 through one or more backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an S1, N2, N2, or another network interface) . The network entities 102 may communicate with each other over the backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an X2, Xn, or another network interface) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., between the network entities 102) . In some other implementations, the network entities 102 may communicate with each other or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 106) . In some implementations, one or more network entities 102 may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC) . An ANC may communicate with the one or more UEs 104 through one or more other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as a radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission-reception points (TRPs) .

[0101] In some implementations, a network entity 102 may be configured in a disaggregated architecture, which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack physically or logically distributed among two or more network entities 102, such as an integrated access backhaul (IAB) network, an open RAN (O-RAN) (e.g., a network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance) , or a virtualized RAN (vRAN) (e.g., a cloud RAN (C-RAN) ) . For example, a network entity 102 may include one or more of a central unit (CU) , a distributed unit (DU) , a radio unit (RU) , a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) (e.g., a Near-Real Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) , a Non-Real Time RIC (Non-RT RIC) ) , a Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) system, or any combination thereof.

[0102] An RU may also be referred to as a radio head, a smart radio head, a remote radio head (RRH) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , or a transmission reception point (TRP) . One or more components of the network entities 102 in a disaggregated RAN architecture may be co-located, or one or more components of the network entities 102 may be located in distributed locations (e.g., separate physical locations) . In some implementations, one or more network entities 102 of a disaggregated RAN architecture may be implemented as virtual units (e.g., a virtual CU (VCU) , a virtual DU (VDU) , a virtual RU (VRU) ) .

[0103] Split of functionality between a CU, a DU, and an RU may be flexible and may support different functionalities depending upon which functions (e.g., network layer functions, protocol layer functions, baseband functions, radio frequency functions, and any combinations thereof) are performed at a CU, a DU, or an RU. For example, a functional split of a protocol stack may be employed between a CU and a DU such that the CU may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the DU may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. In some implementations, the CU may host upper protocol layer (e.g., a layer 3 (L3) , a layer 2 (L2) ) functionality and signaling (e.g., Radio Resource Control (RRC) , service data adaption protocol (SDAP) , Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) ) . The CU may be connected to one or more DUs or RUs, and the one or more DUs or RUs may host lower protocol layers, such as a layer 1 (L1) (e.g., physical (PHY) layer) or an L2 (e.g., radio link control (RLC) layer, medium access control (MAC) layer) functionality and signaling, and may each be at least partially controlled by the CU 160.

[0104] Additionally, or alternatively, a functional split of the protocol stack may be employed between a DU and an RU such that the DU may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the RU may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. The DU may support one or multiple different cells (e.g., via one or more RUs) . In some implementations, a functional split between a CU and a DU, or between a DU and an RU may be within a protocol layer (e.g., some functions for a protocol layer may be performed by one of a CU, a DU, or an RU, while other functions of the protocol layer are performed by a different one of the CU, the DU, or the RU) .

[0105] A CU may be functionally split further into CU control plane (CU-CP) and CU user plane (CU-UP) functions. A CU may be connected to one or more DUs via a midhaul communication link (e.g., F1, F1-c, F1-u) , and a DU may be connected to one or more RUs via a fronthaul communication link (e.g., open fronthaul (FH) interface) . In some implementations, a midhaul communication link or a fronthaul communication link may be implemented in accordance with an interface (e.g., a channel) between layers of a protocol stack supported by respective network entities 102 that are in communication via such communication links.

[0106] The core network 106 may support user authentication, access authorization, tracking, connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 106 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) , or a 5G core (5GC) , which may include a control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) , an access and mobility management functions (AMF) ) and a user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . In some implementations, the control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management (e.g., data bearers, signal bearers, etc. ) for the one or more UEs 104 served by the one or more network entities 102 associated with the core network 106.

[0107] The core network 106 may communicate with the packet data network 108 over one or more backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an S1, N2, N2, or another network interface) . The packet data network 108 may include an application server 118. In some implementations, one or more UEs 104 may communicate with the application server 118. A UE 104 may establish a session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session, or the like) with the core network 106 via a network entity 102. The core network 106 may route traffic (e.g., control information, data, and the like) between the UE 104 and the application server 118 using the established session (e.g., the established PDU session) . The PDU session may be an example of a logical connection between the UE 104 and the core network 106 (e.g., one or more network functions of the core network 106) .

[0108] In the wireless communications system 100, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers) ) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support different resource structures. For example, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures (i.e., multiple frame structures) . The network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.

[0109] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A first numerology (e.g., μ=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., μ=1) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., μ=2) may be associated with a third subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., μ=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.

[0110] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames) . Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1 ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.

[0111] Additionally or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (i.e., μ=0, μ=1, μ=2, μ=3, μ=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols) . In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing) , a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that reference to a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.

[0112] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands, frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz –114.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the network entities 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data) . In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the network entities 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.

[0113] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies) . For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) , which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., μ=1) , which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing. FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies) . For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) , which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.

[0114] In wireless communication systems, a RA procedure may be utilized for various purposes. For example, the RA procedure may be utilized by a UE in initial access to find a cell to camp on; or utilized by a radio resource control (RRC) IDLE / INACTIVE UE to switch to a RRC Connected mode to start data transmission / reception; or utilized by a RRC Connected UE to re-establish the lost uplink (UL) synchronization, etc.

[0115] In some implementations, the RA procedure may include four steps. FIG. 1B illustrates an example of a 4-step RA procedure 120 that supports beam refinement for RA in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the procedure 120 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The procedure 120 may involve a UE 104 and a BS 102 as illustrated in FIG. 1A. It is noted that the 4-step RA procedure is merely for illustration, and not for limitation. Embodiments of the present disclosure may apply to other RA procedures.

[0116] In the RA procedure 120, the UE 104 may firstly transmit (122) a Message 1 (Msg1) including a preamble to the base station 102. The BS 102 may configure RA channel (RACH) occasions (ROs) for Msg1 preamble transmission. A RO may occupy multiple consecutive resource blocks in frequency domain and a set of OFDM symbols in time domain. The BS 102 may configure a set of available preambles in each RO so that the UE 104 can select one preamble from the set of preambles and transmit the preamble to the BS 102 in the associated RO.

[0117] After receiving the Msg1, the base station 102 may transmit (124) a RA response (RAR) in Message 2 (Msg2) to the UE 104, indicating the reception of the preamble and providing necessary information for the transmission of Message 3 (Msg3) . Correspondingly, after transmitting the preamble, the UE 104 may start to receive Msg2 RAR in a configured time window. RAR may be scheduled by a DCI, which is scrambled by a specific RA radio network temporary identifier (RA-RNTI) . RA-RNTI may be uniquely determined by the associated RO. More specifically, if a UE 104 transmit a preamble in a specific RO, the RA-RNTI may be determined correspondingly based on the time and frequency resource of the RO. In addition, if more than one preambles are received by the BS 102 in a same RO, which are transmitted from different UEs, the BS 102 will transmit RAR to the UEs in a same RAR medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) .

[0118] RAR may indicate the reception of the preamble and provide UL timing advance value and UL grant for the UE 104 to transmit Msg3. The UE 104 may then transmit (126) a Msg3 to the base station 102 correspondingly according to the scheduling information in the UL grant. The base station 102 may transmit (128) a Message 4 (Msg4) to the UE 104. The Msg3 and Msg4 may be used to solve potential collisions due to simultaneous transmissions of the same preamble from different UEs to the base station 102.

[0119] Besides, in the initial access, there may also be a Message 5 (Msg5) transmitted from the UE 104 to the BS 102, to confirm the establishment of RRC connection. In other words, after receiving the Msg4, the UE 104 may transmit a hybrid automatic repeat request-acknowledgement (HARQ-ACK) to the base station 102 to indicate whether the Msg4 is correctly received by the UE 104.

[0120] In a beam-based system, the UE and the BS may identify the best beam to transmit and receive signals or messages. During the initial access, the UE monitors synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) containing synchronization signal and physical broadcast channel (PBCH) , each of which is transmitted using a specific BS Tx beam (or spatial filter) . Across UE Rx beams, UE identifies a SSB and a UE Rx beam with the received power exceeding a configured threshold.

[0121] The SSBs may be associated with ROs and preambles. Therefore, when a UE transmits a preamble (using the determined UE Tx beam) from a specific RO, the UE conveys the information of the selected SSB to the BS, so that the BS may determine the BS Tx beam based on the SSB selected by the UE. Thus, a beam pair (i.e., a pair of a BS Tx beam and a UE Rx beam) may be determined for the BS and the UE to communicate with each other.

[0122] Then based on beam correspondence, i.e., the beam used for reception determines the beam used for transmission, and vice versa, a UE Tx beam may be determined from the UE Rx beam. Similarly, a BS Rx beam may be determined from the BS Tx beam. As used herein, the terms “DL Rx beam” and “UE Rx beam” may be used interchangeably, which stands for the beam that UE uses to receive DL transmission, and the terms “DL Tx beam” and “BS Tx beam” may be used interchangeably, which stands for the beam that BS use to perform the DL transmission. Similarly, the “UL Tx beam” and “UE Tx beam” may be used interchangeably, which stands for the beam that UE use to perform UL transmission, and the terms “UL Rx beam” and “BS Rx beam” may be used interchangeably, which stands for the beam that BS use to receive UL transmission.

[0123] In the initial access, the UE will transmit a preamble and the subsequent UL signals using the determined UE Tx beam. The BS uses the corresponding BS Rx beam to receive preamble and the subsequent UL signals or messages from the UE. Correspondingly, the BS uses the BS Tx beam to transmit DL messages to the UE. The UE will receive the DL messages using the determined UE Rx beam.

[0124] FIG. 1C illustrates an example 130 of associations between SSBs and RACH occasions (ROs) that supports beam refinement for RA in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 1C, eight SSBs, e.g., SSB#0 to SSB#7, are assumed. In the example association 130, the eight SSBs, each corresponding to a specific BS Tx beam, are one-to-one associated with eight ROs (and further associated with the preambles in each RO) . It should be understood that FIG. 1C merely shows an example of SSB to RO association, NR also supports 1-to-N association or N-to-1 association (N>1) . The SSB to RO association may be indicated to the UE through a specific configuration.

[0125] In wireless communications, the width of a beam may be characterized in terms of e.g., the half power beam width (HPBW) , i.e., the angle between two directions at which the radiated power drops by 3 dB on both sides of the maximum radiated direction. Beams of different widths are suitable for different communication stages and scenarios. The wide beam is suitable for cell search and synchronization because of its large half-power beam width and wide coverage. The narrow beam has small half-power beam width and narrow coverage, and thus is suitable for data transmission and beamforming. Through the rational use of wide and narrow beams, efficient wireless communications can be achieved, improving the performance of the network and user experience. It will be appreciated that the definition and application scenarios of wide and narrow beams are relative and that the specific beam width needs to be determined according to the actual network design and application requirements.

[0126] In some implementations, the SSBs are transmitted using wide beams. As a comparison, the CSI-RS configured for a connected UE can be transmitted using narrow beams. Similar assumption is taken for UE, where the UE may use a wide beam for RA procedure and use a narrow beam for UL transmission when in connected mode. Generally, communication using a well-established narrow beam pair may have better coverage performance than that using wide beams. However, during initial access when UE is still in idle mode, the NR uses wide beams for communication in initial access. The usage of wide beams for communication in RA might result in coverage issues for messages in RA procedures.

[0127] 5G NR has developed solutions to enhance the coverage for RACH messages. For example, Release 15 (Rel-15) specified coverage enhancement (CE) for Msg1 and Msg2. Msg1 CE may be achieved by specifying long preamble format. Msg2 CE may be achieved by introducing transport block (TB) scaling factors (1, 0.5, 0.25) for Msg2. The effective coding rate for Msg2 can be calculated as = TB scaling factor *channel coding rate. Therefore, if a TB scaling factor, which is less than 1 (0.5, or 0.25) , is indicated to be used, the effective coding rate of Msg2 is much lower than the channel coding rate, therefore coverage can be improved. Rel-17 specified CE for Msg3, by using Msg3 repetition. Rel-18 specified CE for Msg1 (mostly for FR2 but may also apply for FR1) , by using Msg1 repetition in a same beam. Besides, it has been proposed to support further Msg3 and Msg5 CE. Msg3 CE may be achieved by using narrow beam transmission. The narrow beam may be determined at gNB by monitoring multiple narrow Tx beams for Msg1 repetition, each of which is transmitted by a narrow beam. Msg5 CE may be achieved by introducing Msg5 PUSCH repetition (scheduled by DCI format 0_0) . However, such solutions mostly target for coverage enhancement for repeated transmissions, which needs quite high energy consumption and resource overhead.

[0128] Thus, further enhancements are needed for coverage enhancement for RA procedures. In particular, solutions are needed to enable transmission and / or reception using refined beam during RA procedures so as to improve coverage of signals / channels.

[0129] In view of the above, some embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for coverage enhancement for RA using beam refinement. In an aspect of the solution, a plurality of demodulation reference signals (DMRSs) may be transmitted by a BS in a RA response (RAR) in a plurality of RAR resource subsets, respectively. The UE may determine at least one of a DL Rx beam or a DL Tx beam for the RA procedure based on measurements on the plurality of DMRSs. In this way, refined beam (s) or narrow beam (s) may be used to enhance the coverage of signals / channels in RA procedures.

[0130] Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which illustrates an example signaling chart of a communication process that supports beam refinement for RA in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The process 200 may involve the UE 104 and the network entity 102. The network entity 102 may be implemented as a BS. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 2 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. It is to be understood that process 200 may further include additional blocks not shown and / or omit some shown blocks, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0131] In the process 200, the UE 104 transmits (202) a preamble 204 among a set of preambles to the BS 102 in a RA procedure. The BS 102 receives (206) the preamble 204 from the UE 104 and transmits (208) a RAR 210 including a plurality of DMRSs. The plurality of DMRSs are transmitted in a plurality of RAR resource subsets, respectively. The UE 104 receives (212) the RAR 210 from the BS 102 and determines (214) at least one of a DL Rx beam (from a perspective of UE) or a DL Tx beam (from a perspective of BS) for the RA procedure based on measurements on the plurality of DMRSs in the RAR 210. In this way, coverage enhancement for RA may be achieved by beam refinement based on measuring DMRSs in Msg2 RAR in different RAR resource subsets. Thus, the network coverage may be extended, the access success rate may be improved and the access delay may be reduced without needs to use repeated transmission.

[0132] Embodiments of the present disclosure may enable beam refinement for transmission and / or reception during RA procedures to improve coverage of signals / channels in the RA procedure, assuming that a pair of wide beams have been established e.g., based on measurements on SSBs using different UE Rx wide beams. The beam refinement for RA may be implemented in various manners, e.g., UE Tx / Rx beam refinement, BS Tx / Rx beam refinement, and joint BS and UE Tx / Rx beam refinement, so as to enable beam refinement for transmission and / or reception during RA procedure. Hereinafter, some implementations of beam refinement for RA will be further detailed.

[0133] In some embodiments, the BS 102 may transmit the plurality of DMRSs using one DL Tx beam in a plurality of RAR resource subsets. The UE 104 may receive the plurality of DMRSs using a plurality of DL Rx beams in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The DL Rx beam may be determined from the plurality of DL Rx beams based on measurements on the plurality of DMRSs in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The UE 104 may receive DL transmissions from the BS 102 using the determined DL Rx beam in the RA procedure. In other words, the UE Rx beam for RA procedure may be refined.

[0134] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may determine an UL Tx beam from the DL Rx beam based on a beam correspondence, and may transmit UL transmissions to the BS 102 using the determined UL Tx beam in the RA procedure. In other words, the UE Tx beam for RA procedure may be refined.

[0135] For example, the BS 102 may transmit Msg2 RAR using a same DL Tx beam, and the UE 104 may use different DL Rx narrow beams to receive the RAR. The DL Rx narrow beams may be associated with and narrower than the DL Rx beam determined based on SSB to RO association. The UE 104 may measure the RAR DMRSs in the RAR to get the channel quality (e.g., RSRP) of each DL Rx narrow beam and determines the DL Rx narrow beam with the best one channel quality. From the determined DL Rx narrow beam, an UL Tx narrow beam is determined based on beam correspondence. The UE 104 will then use the determined UL Tx narrow beam and DL Rx narrow beam to transmit and receive subsequent messages in the RA procedure (i.e., Msg3 / Msg4 / Msg5) . In this way, the UE Tx / Rx beam refinement for the RA procedure may be achieved.

[0136] In some implementations, a number of DL Rx beams among the plurality of DL Rx beams may be equal to a number of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. To use the RAR DMRSs to determine the UE Rx beam, the set of OFDM symbols allocated for the RAR may be divided to be multiple subsets. A DMRS is transmitted in each subset of symbols and is measured by the UE 104 using a different DL Rx beam. That is to say, the number of subsets of symbols is the same as the number of DL Rx beams utilized in RA procedure for UE Rx beam refinement. The UE 104 may determine a DL Rx beam that provides the best channel quality.

[0137] In some implementations, a number of symbols in each subset among the plurality of RAR resource subsets may be the same. Alternatively, a number of symbols in each subset among the plurality of RAR resource subsets may differ by one symbol. For example, if the RAR is transmitted in K RAR symbols divided into two RAR resource subsets, the number of symbols in each subset should be same for even number of RAR symbols (K is an even number) or should have at most one symbol difference for odd number of RAR symbols (K is an odd number) .

[0138] In some implementations, the UE 104 may receive a DMRS pattern configuration for the plurality of RAR resource subsets from the BS 102. In other words, one DMRS pattern may be configured and utilized for all RAR resource subsets. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive a plurality of DMRS pattern configurations for the plurality of RAR resource subsets from the BS 102. In other words, a respective DMRS pattern may be configured for each RAR resource subset.

[0139] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive a SSB from the BS 102 and determine a channel quality based on measurements on the SSB. In some scenarios, the determined channel quality may be below a first channel quality threshold, the UE 104 may transmit, the preamble among the set of preambles for triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure to the BS 102. In other words, the UE Rx beam refinement scheme in RA procedure may be used for a condition that the DL channel quality (measured from SSBs based on current Rx wide beam) is below a first configured threshold. In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of the set of preambles for triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure. In some implementations, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of the set of preambles for triggering a DL Rx beam determination for the RA procedure. For example, a dedicated set of preambles may be configured for the UE for the purpose of UE Rx beam refinement, so that when the condition is met, the UE 104 may select one preamble from the preamble set associated with UE Rx beam refinement to start the RA procedure. When the BS 102 receives the preamble, the BS 102 knows the UE’s request, and will transmit Msg2 RAR with a DMRS transmitted in each subset of OFDM symbols for UE Rx beam refinement.

[0140] In some implementations, there may be a time gap between two consecutive subsets for UE Rx beam switching. If such gap is needed, a RAR can be either punctured or rate matched around the time gap. Alternatively, there may not be a time gap between two consecutive subsets for UE Rx beam switching.

[0141] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a DCI for scheduling the RAR. The DCI may be scrambled by a radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) associated with a beam determination for the RA procedure. For example, in case that the dedicated set of preambles configured for triggering UE Rx beam refinement for RA share a same RO with other preambles, it is possible that one set of UEs are transmitting preambles to request UE Rx beam training (i.e., refinement) while the other set of UEs are not doing that. In this case, a dedicated RAR may be transmitted for the UEs requesting UE Rx beam training. Such RAR may be scheduled by a dedicated RNTI.

[0142] Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a DCI for scheduling the RAR. The DCI may include a configuration of the plurality of DMRSs to be transmitted in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. For example, in case that the dedicated set of preambles configured for triggering UE Rx beam refinement for RA share a same RO with other preambles, it is possible that one set of UEs are transmitting preambles to request UE Rx beam training (i.e., refinement) while the other set of UEs are not doing that. In this case, the two set of UEs may share a same RAR, and the BS 102 may configure the DMRS to be transmitted in each RAR resource subset via the RAR scheduling DCI.

[0143] In some embodiments, a number of DL Rx beams among the plurality of DL Rx beams may be predefined. For example, due to lack of UE capability, the BS 102 may assume a predefined number of UE Rx beams utilized in the RA procedure, e.g. 2 UE Rx beams. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a plurality of sets of preambles associated with a plurality of DL Rx beam numbers. The plurality of sets of preambles may include the set of preambles, and the set of preambles is associated with a DL Rx beam number supported by the UE 104. For example, the BS 102 may configure different preamble sets for different numbers of UE Rx beams (e.g., a first preamble set for two UE Rx beams and a second preamble set for three UE Rx beams) . A UE supporting a certain number of Rx beams can utilize the corresponding preamble set to request beam refinement during the RA procedure. For different preamble sets, which are related with different numbers of UE Rx beams, the BS 102 may transmit different RARs.

[0144] With some embodiments of the present disclosure, a UE Rx / Tx beam refinement scheme for RA is designed. FIG. 3 illustrates an example scheme of UE Rx beam refinement for RA in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the example in FIG. 3, the allocated K symbols for RAR are divided to be two subsets. Each subset is transmitted using a same BS Tx wide beam and is received by a different UE Rx narrow beam. DMRS is transmitted in each subset and is measured by the two UE Rx narrow beams respectively. The UE determines one UE Rx beam from the two UE Rx narrow beams as the DL Rx beam to receive the subsequent messages in the RA procedure. The UE may also determine a UE Tx narrow beam correspondingly as the UL Tx beam to transmit the subsequent messages in the RA procedure.

[0145] Turning back to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, the BS 102 may transmit the plurality of DMRSs using a plurality of DL Tx beams in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The UE 104 may receive the plurality of DMRSs using one DL Rx beam in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The DL Tx beam may be determined from the plurality of DL Tx beams based on measurements on the plurality of DMRSs in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The UE 104 may transmit an indication of the DL Tx beam to the BS 102. The BS 102 may transmit to the UE 104, DL transmissions using the DL Tx beam in the RA procedure. In other words, the BS Tx beam for RA procedure may be refined.

[0146] In some embodiments, the BS 102 may determine an UL Rx beam from the DL Tx beam based on a beam correspondence, and may receive UL transmissions from the UE using the determined UL Rx beam in the RA procedure. In other words, the BS Rx beam for RA procedure may be refined.

[0147] For example, the BS 102 may transmit Msg2 RAR using multiple DL Tx narrow beams, and the UE 104 may use a same DL Rx beam to receive the RAR. The DL Tx narrow beams may be associated with and narrower than the DL Tx beam determined based on SSB to RO association. The UE 104 may measure RAR DMRSs in the RAR to get the channel quality, e.g., RSRP, of each DL Tx narrow beam and determines the DL Tx narrow beam with the best one channel quality. The UE 104 may indicate the BS 102 the best DL Tx narrow beam before or during Msg3 transmission. From the indicated DL Tx narrow beam, an UL Rx narrow beam is determined based on beam correspondence. The BS 102 will then use the indicated DL Tx narrow beam, and correspondingly determined UL Rx narrow beam, to transmit and receive the subsequent messages in the RA procedure (i.e., Msg3 / Msg4 / Msg5) . In this way, the BS Tx / Rx beam refinement for the RA procedure may be achieved.

[0148] In some implementations, a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to a number of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The set of OFDM symbols allocated for RAR may be divided to be multiple subsets. RAR PDSCH and DMRS are transmitted in each subset of symbols and using a different DL Tx beam. That is to say, the number of subsets of symbols is same with the number of DL Tx beams utilized in RA procedure for BS Tx beam refinement. The UE 104 may determine a DL Tx beam which provides the best channel quality.

[0149] In some implementations, a number of symbols in each subset among the plurality of RAR resource subsets may be the same.

[0150] In some implementations, the UE 104 may receive a DMRS pattern configuration for the plurality of RAR resource subsets from the BS 102.

[0151] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive a SSB from the BS 102 and determine a channel quality based on measurements on the SSB. In some scenarios, the determined channel quality may be below a second channel quality threshold, the UE 104 may transmit, the preamble among the set of preambles for triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure to the BS 102. In other words, the BS Tx beam refinement scheme in RA procedure may be used for a condition that the DL channel quality (measured from SSBs) is below a second configured threshold. In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of the set of preambles for triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure. In some implementations, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of the set of preambles for triggering a DL Tx beam determination for the RA procedure. For example, a dedicated set of preambles may be configured for the UE for the purpose of BS Tx beam refinement, so that when the condition is met, the UE 104 may select one preamble from the preamble set associated with BS Tx beam refinement to start the RA procedure. When the BS 102 receives the preamble, the BS 102 knows the UE’s request, and will transmit Msg2 RAR (including DMRS) using different BS Tx beams in each subset of OFDM symbols for BS Tx beam refinement.

[0152] Alternatively, the BS 102 may determine a channel quality based on measurements on the preamble 104. In some scenarios, the determined channel quality may be below a channel quality threshold. The BS 102 may transmit, to the UE 104, an indication of triggering a beam determination for the random access procedure. The UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, the indication of triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure. The indication of triggering a beam determination may be carried in a DCI for scheduling the RAR. In other words, the BS 102 may measure the UL channel quality from the received preamble, and if the channel quality is lower than a threshold, the BS 102 may indicate the UE 104 to measure the RAR DMRS and feedback the preferred DL Tx beam. The indication of triggering a BS Tx refinement for RA can be carried in the RAR DCI.

[0153] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams. In other words, the BS 102 may indicate the UE 104 the number of DL Tx beams. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of RAR resource subsets among the plurality of RAR resource subsets. A number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to the number of RAR resource subsets among the plurality of RAR resource subsets. In other words, the number of DL Tx beams may be implicitly determined based on the number of subsets indicated e.g., in RRC or in RAR DCI. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of DMRSs among the plurality of DMRSs in the RAR. A number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to the number of DMRSs among the plurality of DMRS in the RAR. In other words, the number of DL Tx beams may be implicitly determined based on the number of DMRS symbols indicated e.g., in RRC or in RAR DCI. Alternatively, a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be predefined.

[0154] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may transmit an indication of the determined DL Tx beam to the BS 102. The UE 104 may indicate the BS 102 the preferred DL Tx beam in various manners.

[0155] In some implementations, the UE 104 may transmit, to the BS 102, a transmission in a physical resource associated with the determined DL Tx beam. The transmission in the physical resource associated with the determined DL Tx beam may be prior to a Msg3 transmission for the RA procedure. For example, before transmitting Msg3 (e.g., in a slot before Msg3 transmission) , the UE 104 may transmit one signal (e.g., a sequence) to the BS 102 in a physical resource (e.g., in a OFDM symbol over a couple of resource blocks) that is associated with the preferred DL Tx beam. In other words, the DL Tx narrow beam is one-to-one associated with a physical resource for the sequence transmission. If the BS 102 detects the sequence from a physical resource, the BS 102 could know which DL Tx beam is preferred by the UE 104.

[0156] Alternatively, the UE 104 may transmit, to the BS 102, a Msg3 transmission in a candidate resource associated with the determined DL Tx beam. In other words, there may be multiple candidate resources for Msg3 transmission, each candidate resources associated with a specific DL Tx beam. If the BS 102 detects a Msg3 from a candidate resource, the BS 102 could know which DL Tx beam is preferred by the UE 104.

[0157] With some embodiments of the present disclosure, a BS Tx / Rx beam refinement scheme for RA is designed. FIG. 4A illustrates an example scheme of BS Tx beam refinement for RA in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the example in FIG. 4A, the allocated K symbols for RAR are divided to be two subsets. Each subset is transmitted using a different BS Tx narrow beam and is received by a same UE Rx wide beam. DMRS is transmitted in each subset and is measured by the UE. The UE determines one BS Tx beam from the two BS Tx narrow beams as the DL Tx beam and indicate the BS the preferred DL Tx beam. After getting the indication, the BS will use the indicated DL Tx beam to transmit the subsequent messages in the RA procedure. The BS may also determine a BS Rx narrow beam correspondingly as the UL Rx beam to receive the subsequent messages in the RA procedure.

[0158] FIG. 4B illustrates an example of a UE indicating a preferred BS Tx beam in RA in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the example in FIG. 4B, the UE indicates the preferred BS Tx beam based on associated BS Tx beam and different OFDM symbols. In slot #n, symbol S0 is associated with one BS Tx beam (beam #0) and S1 is associated with the other BS Tx beam (beam #1) . If the preferred BS Tx beam is beam #0, the UE will transmit a sequence in S0 and leave S1 as vacant. In BS side, when the sequence is received in S0, the BS knows the preferred BS Tx beam is beam #0 and will received Msg3 using the corresponding BS Rx beam (based on beam correspondence) . Similarly, in an example implementation different from FIG. 4B, if the preferred BS Tx beam is beam #1, the UE will transmit a sequence in S1 and leave S0 as vacant. In BS side, when the sequence is received in S1, the BS knows the preferred BS Tx beam is beam #1 and will received Msg3 using the corresponding BS Rx beam (based on beam correspondence) .

[0159] Turning back to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, the BS 102 may transmit the plurality of DMRSs using a plurality of DL Tx beams in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The UE 104 may receive the plurality of DMRSs using a plurality of DL Rx beams in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. The DL Rx beam and the DL Tx beam may be determined based on measurements on the plurality of DMRSs in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. In other words, the UE Rx beam and the BS Tx beam for RA procedure may be refined jointly. The UE 104 may receive DL transmissions from the BS 102 using the determined DL Rx beam in the RA procedure. The UE 104 may determine an UL Tx beam from the DL Rx beam based on a beam correspondence, and may transmit UL transmissions to the BS 102 using the determined UL Tx beam in the RA procedure. The UE 104 may transmit an indication of the DL Tx beam to the BS 102. The BS 102 may transmit to the UE 104, DL transmissions using the DL Tx beam in the RA procedure. The BS 102 may determine an UL Rx beam from the DL Tx beam based on a beam correspondence, and may receive UL transmissions from the UE using the determined UL Rx beam in the RA procedure. In other words, a joint BS Tx / Rx beam and UE Tx / Rx beam refinement for RA procedure may be achieved. For example, the BS 102 may transmit the Msg2 RAR using one BS Tx beam in a first set of resources, which are divided to be multiple subsets, for the UE 104 to measure RAR DMRS using each UE Rx beam. And the BS 102 may transmit the Msg2 RAR using another BS Tx beam in a second set of resources, for the UE 104 to measure RAR DMRS using each UE Rx beam. This procedure is continued until all the beams in the BS 102 and the UE 104 are utilized and measured. The UE 104 may get the channel quality (e.g., RSRP) of each beam pair and may determine the beam pair with the best channel quality. The UE 104 will indicate the BS 102 the best DL Tx narrow beam before or during Msg3 transmission. Similarly, UE will use the determined UL Tx narrow beam and DL Rx narrow beam to transmit and receive subsequent messages in the RA procedure (i.e., Msg3 / Msg4 / Msg5) .

[0160] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive a SSB from the BS 102 and determine a channel quality based on measurements on the SSB. In some scenarios, the determined channel quality may be below a third channel quality threshold, the UE 104 may transmit, the preamble among the set of preambles for triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure to the BS 102. In other words, the joint UE Rx and BS Tx beam refinement scheme in RA procedure may be used for a condition that the DL channel quality (measured from SSBs based on current Rx wide beam) is below a third configured threshold. In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of the set of preambles for triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure. In some implementations, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of the set of preambles for triggering a DL Rx and DL Tx beam determination for the RA procedure. For example, a dedicated set of preambles may be configured for the UE for the purpose of joint UE Rx and BS Tx beam refinement, so that when the condition is met, the UE 104 may select one preamble from the preamble set associated with joint UE Rx and BS Tx beam refinement to start the RA procedure. When the BS 102 receives the preamble, the BS 102 knows the UE’s request, and will transmit Msg2 RAR (including DMRS) using different BS Tx beams in each subset of OFDM symbols in a group among a plurality of RAR symbol groups for joint UE Rx and BS Tx beam refinement.

[0161] Alternatively, the BS 102 may determine a channel quality based on measurements on the preamble 104. In other words, the BS 102 may measure the UL channel quality from the received preamble, and if the channel quality is lower than a threshold, the BS 102 may indicate the UE 104 to measure the RAR DMRS, determine the preferred DL Tx beam and DL Rx beam and feedback the preferred DL Tx beam. The indication of triggering a joint UE Rx and BS Tx beam refinement for RA can be carried in the RAR DCI.

[0162] The joint UE Rx and BS Tx beam refinement scheme may be utilized when the channel quality is very low, in which case a small TB scaling factor (e.g., 1 / 4) should be used in legacy while here it is assumed that a Msg2 is repeated in multiple slots, so that there could be enough number of symbol subsets for beam training. Technically there is no much difference of using 1 / 4 scaling factor with four repetitions in terms of occupied resources for Msg2.

[0163] In some implementations, the plurality of RAR resource subsets may include a plurality of groups of RAR resource subsets. A number of DL Rx beams among the plurality of DL Rx beams may be equal to a number of groups in the plurality of groups of RAR resource subsets, and a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to a number of RAR resource subsets in a group of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of groups of RAR resource subsets. In some implementations, the RAR may include a plurality of RAR repetitions, and a RAR repetition may be received in a group of RAR resource subsets. The set of OFDM symbols allocated for RAR may be divided to be multiple (e.g., N) groups, and each group of OFDM symbols may be divided to be multiple (e.g., M) subsets. RAR PDSCH and DMRS are transmitted in each subset of symbols and using a different DL Tx beam and is measured by the UE 104 using a different DL Rx beam. For example, Msg2 may be repeated in N slots and a Msg2 repetition including a DMRS is transmitted in a slot using different DL Tx beams and is measured by the UE 104 using a respective DL Rx beam. The number N of groups is same with the number of DL Rx beams utilized in RA procedure for UE Rx beam refinement. The number M of symbol subsets in a group is same with the number of DL Tx beams utilized in RA procedure for BS Tx beam refinement. The UE 104 may determine a pair of a DL Tx beam and a DL Rx beam which provides the best channel quality.

[0164] Alternatively, the plurality of RAR resource subsets may include a plurality of groups of RAR resource subsets. A number of DL Rx beams among the plurality of DL Rx beams may be equal to a number of RAR resource subsets in a group of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of groups of RAR resource subsets, and a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to a number of groups in the plurality of groups of RAR resource subsets. In some implementations, the RAR may include a plurality of RAR repetitions, and a RAR repetition may be received in a group of RAR resource subsets. The set of OFDM symbols allocated for RAR may be divided to be multiple (e.g., M) groups, and each group of OFDM symbols may be divided to be multiple (e.g., N) subsets. RAR PDSCH and DMRS are transmitted in each subset of symbols and using a different DL Tx beam and is measured by the UE 104 using a different DL Rx beam. For example, Msg2 may be repeated in M slots and a Msg2 repetition including a DMRS is transmitted in a slot using a respective DL Tx beam and is measured by the UE 104 using different DL Rx beams. The number M of groups is same with the number of DL Tx beams utilized in RA procedure for BS Tx beam refinement. The number N of symbol subsets in a group is same with the number of DL Rx beams utilized in RA procedure for UE Rx beam refinement. The UE 104 may determine a pair of a DL Tx beam and a DL Rx beam which provides the best channel quality.

[0165] In some implementations, a number of symbols in each subset among the plurality of RAR resource subsets may be the same. Alternatively, a number of symbols in each subset among the plurality of RAR resource subsets may differ by one symbol.

[0166] In some implementations, the UE 104 may receive a DMRS pattern configuration for the plurality of RAR resource subsets from the BS 102. In other words, one DMRS pattern may be configured and utilized for all RAR resource subsets. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive a plurality of DMRS pattern configurations for the plurality of RAR resource subsets in a group of RAR resource subsets from the BS 102. In other words, a respective DMRS pattern may be configured for each RAR resource subset in a group of RAR resource subsets. The DMRS pattern configuration may be utilized for all RAR resource groups.

[0167] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams. In other words, the BS 102 may indicate the UE 104 the number of DL Tx beams. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of RAR resource subsets among the plurality of RAR resource subsets, wherein a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams is determined based on the number of RAR resource subsets among the plurality of RAR resource subsets and a number of DL Rx beams among the plurality of DL Rx beams. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of DMRSs among the plurality of DMRSs in the RAR, wherein a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams is determined based on the number of DMRSs among the plurality of DMRS in the RAR and a number of DL Rx beams among the plurality of DL Rx beams. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of groups of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of RAR resource subsets, wherein a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to the number of groups of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of RAR resource subsets in a group of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of RAR resource subsets, wherein a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to the number of RAR resource subsets in a group of RAR resource subsets in the plurality of RAR resource subsets. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of RAR repetitions in the RAR, wherein a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to the number of RAR repetitions in the RAR. Alternatively, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, an indication of a number of DMRSs in a RAR repetition in the RAR, wherein a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be equal to the number of DMRSs in a RAR repetition in the RAR. Alternatively, a number of DL Tx beams among the plurality of DL Tx beams may be predefined.

[0168] In some embodiments, a number of DL Rx beams among the plurality of DL Rx beams may be predefined.

[0169] In some embodiments, the UE 104 may transmit an indication of the determined DL Tx beam to the BS 102. The UE 104 may indicate the BS 102 the preferred DL Tx beam in various manners.

[0170] In some implementations, the UE 104 may transmit, to the BS 102, a transmission in a physical resource associated with the determined DL Tx beam.

[0171] Alternatively, the UE 104 may transmit, to the BS 102, a Msg3 transmission in a candidate resource associated with the determined DL Tx beam. In other words, there may be multiple candidate resources for Msg3 transmission, each candidate resources associated with a specific DL Tx beam. If the BS 102 detects a Msg3 from a candidate resource, the BS 102 could know which DL Tx beam is preferred by the UE 104.

[0172] With some embodiments of the present disclosure, a joint UE and BS Tx / Rx beam refinement scheme for RA is designed. FIG. 5 illustrates an example scheme of a joint refinement scheme on UE Rx beam and BS Tx beam for RA in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the example in FIG. 5, both the BS and the UE can use two narrow Tx / Rx beams for transmission and reception. The RAR is repeated in two slots, and in each slot the symbols are divided to be two subsets. Therefore, there are totally four subsets of symbols for RAR. Each subset is associated with different beam pairs as shown in FIG. 5. The UE measures DMRS and may determine one best beam pair. The UE indicates the BS the preferred BS Tx beam for use in transmitting and receiving the subsequent messages.

[0173] At least one of the UE Tx / Rx beam refinement scheme, the BS Tx / Rx beam refinement scheme and the joint BS and UE Tx / Rx beam refinement scheme may be applied for the RA procedure of the UE 104. In some embodiments, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of the set of preambles for triggering a beam determination for the RA procedure. In some implementations, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of at least one first set of preambles for triggering a DL Rx beam determination for the RA procedure. In some examples, each first set of preambles may be associated with a respective DL Rx beam number for beam refinement. Alternatively or additionally, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of at least one second set of preambles for triggering a DL Tx beam determination for the RA procedure. In some examples, each second set of preambles may be associated with a respective DL channel quality range (measured from SSBs) . Alternatively or additionally, the UE 104 may receive, from the BS 102, a configuration of at least one third set of preambles for triggering a DL Rx and DL Tx beam determination for the RA procedure. In some examples, each third set of preambles may be associated with a respective DL Rx beam number for beam refinement. The set of preambles for selecting the preamble 204 therefrom may be comprised in one of the at least one first set of preambles, the at least one second set of preambles or the at least one third set of preambles. For example, the UE 104 may be configured with at least one set of preambles for triggering beam refinements for the RA procedure and the UE 104 may select one preamble set based on the SSB measurements to trigger UE Tx / Rx beam refinement, or BS Tx / Rx beam refinement, or joint BS and UE Tx / Rx beam refinement. In another example, the UE 104 may be configured with one preamble set for triggering beam refinements for the RA procedure and the UE 104 may transmit the preamble 204 selected from a preamble set to trigger UE Tx / Rx beam refinement. The BS 102 may determine whether joint BS and UE Tx / Rx beam refinement is needed based on measurements on the preamble 204.

[0174] With some embodiments of the present disclosure, a better coverage of Msg3 / Msg4 / Msg5 may be achieved by using a refined UE Tx / Rx beam. Msg2 coverage is also improved due to UE Rx beam diversity and / or BS Tx beam diversity. Additionally, since the refined UE Tx / Rx beam and / or BS Tx / Rx beam are determined from Msg2 DMRS, the beam would be the best for Msg3 / Msg4 / Msg5 transmission and / or reception because these messages are scheduled and transmitted within a short time duration after Msg2, i.e., the beam will not be outdated for these messages.

[0175] FIG. 6 illustrates an example of a device 600 that supports beam refinement for RA in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The device 600 may be an example of a network entity 102 or a UE 104 as described herein. The device 600 may support wireless communication with one or more network entities 102, UEs 104, or any combination thereof. The device 600 may include components for bi-directional communications including components for transmitting and receiving communications, such as a processor 602, a memory 604, a transceiver 606, and, optionally, an I / O controller 608. These components may be in electronic communication or otherwise coupled (e.g., operatively, communicatively, functionally, electronically, electrically) via one or more interfaces (e.g., buses) .

[0176] The processor 602, the memory 604, the transceiver 606, or various combinations thereof or various components thereof may be examples of means for performing various aspects of the present disclosure as described herein. For example, the processor 602, the memory 604, the transceiver 606, or various combinations or components thereof may support a method for performing one or more of the operations described herein.

[0177] In some implementations, the processor 602, the memory 604, the transceiver 606, or various combinations or components thereof may be implemented in hardware (e.g., in communications management circuitry) . The hardware may include a processor, a digital signal processor (DSP) , an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device, a discrete gate or transistor logic, discrete hardware components, or any combination thereof configured as or otherwise supporting a means for performing the functions described in the present disclosure. In some implementations, the processor 602 and the memory 604 coupled with the processor 602 may be configured to perform one or more of the functions described herein (e.g., executing, by the processor 602, instructions stored in the memory 604) .

[0178] For example, the processor 602 may support wireless communication at the device 600 in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The processor 602 may be configured to operable to support a means for transmitting, to a network entity, a preamble among a set of preambles in a random access procedure; a means for receiving, from the network entity, a random access response (RAR) comprising a plurality of demodulation reference signals (DMRSs) , wherein the plurality of DMRSs are received in a plurality of RAR resource subsets; and a means for determining at least one of a downlink (DL) reception (Rx) beam or a DL transmission (Tx) beam for the random access procedure based on measurements on the plurality of DMRSs.

[0179] In another example, the processor 602 may support wireless communication at the device 600 in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The processor 602 may be configured to operable to support a means for receiving, from a user equipment (UE) , a preamble among a set of preambles in a random access procedure; and a means for transmitting, to the UE, a random access response (RAR) comprising a plurality of demodulation reference signals (DMRSs) , wherein the plurality of DMRSs are transmitted in a plurality of RAR resource subsets for the UE to determine at least one of a downlink (DL) reception (Rx) beam or a DL transmission (Tx) beam for the random access procedure.

[0180] The processor 602 may include an intelligent hardware device (e.g., a general-purpose processor, a DSP, a CPU, a microcontroller, an ASIC, an FPGA, a programmable logic device, a discrete gate or transistor logic component, a discrete hardware component, or any combination thereof) . In some implementations, the processor 602 may be configured to operate a memory array using a memory controller. In some other implementations, a memory controller may be integrated into the processor 602. The processor 602 may be configured to execute computer-readable instructions stored in a memory (e.g., the memory 604) to cause the device 600 to perform various functions of the present disclosure such that the device 600 may perform any process of the disclosure as discussed with reference to FIGS. 2 to 8B.

[0182] The I / O controller 608 may manage input and output signals for the device 600. The I / O controller 608 may also manage peripherals not integrated into the device M02. In some implementations, the I / O controller 608 may represent a physical connection or port to an external peripheral. In some implementations, the I / O controller 608 may utilize an operating system such as or another known operating system. In some implementations, the I / O controller 608 may be implemented as part of a processor, such as the processor 606. In some implementations, a user may interact with the device 600 via the I / O controller 608 or via hardware components controlled by the I / O controller 608.

[0183] In some implementations, the device 600 may include a single antenna 610. However, in some other implementations, the device 600 may have more than one antenna 610 (i.e., multiple antennas) , including multiple antenna panels or antenna arrays, which may be capable of concurrently transmitting or receiving multiple wireless transmissions. The transceiver 606 may communicate bi-directionally, via the one or more antennas 610, wired, or wireless links as described herein. For example, the transceiver 606 may represent a wireless transceiver and may communicate bi-directionally with another wireless transceiver. The transceiver 606 may also include a modem to modulate the packets, to provide the modulated packets to one or more antennas 610 for transmission, and to demodulate packets received from the one or more antennas 610. The transceiver 606 may include one or more transmit chains, one or more receive chains, or a combination thereof.

[0184] A transmit chain may be configured to generate and transmit signals (e.g., control information, data, packets) . The transmit chain may include at least one modulator for modulating data onto a carrier signal, preparing the signal for transmission over a wireless medium. The at least one modulator may be configured to support one or more techniques such as amplitude modulation (AM) , frequency modulation (FM) , or digital modulation schemes like phase-shift keying (PSK) or quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) . The transmit chain may also include at least one power amplifier configured to amplify the modulated signal to an appropriate power level suitable for transmission over the wireless medium. The transmit chain may also include one or more antennas 610 for transmitting the amplified signal into the air or wireless medium.
