Description

A DIRECT CYCLIC HYDROCARBON FUEL CELLTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a direct cyclic hydrocarbon fuel cell.BACKGROUND

[0002] The following discussion of the prior art is provided to place the disclosure in an appropriate technical context and enable the advantages of it to be more fully understood. It should be appreciated, however, that any discussion of the prior art throughout the specification should not be considered as an express or implied admission that such prior art is widely known or forms part of common general knowledge in the field.

[0003] Fuel cell has drawn the attention of many researchers because of its potential for high fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is a typical fuel cell in which the chemical energy of methanol converts into electric energy via methanol electro-oxidation. However, direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has some disadvantages such as: (1) crossover where methanol permeates through the solid polymer membrane; (2) significant decrease in power generation efficiency and CO2 / CO generation due to the methanol oxidation reaction; (3) fuel can’t be regenerated.

[0004] Thermochemical liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) , such as cyclic hydrocarbons have been developed as fuels for regenerative fuel cells. LOHC systems are composed of pairs of hydrogen-lean and hydrogen-rich organic compounds that store hydrogen by repeated, catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation cycles. Typical example of LOHCs is the family of Toluene ( “TL” ) and MethylCycloHexane ( “MCH” ) . The concept is binding H2 to TL. This step is called hydrogenation and is performed at the location where H2 is produced. Then liquid MCH is easily and safely stored and transported to importing regions. At this location, chemical binding is broken to release H2. This step is called dehydrogenation. TL is then returned to the producing country to complete the cycle. LOHCs direct fuel cells have the characteristics of high efficiency, safety,  low temperature and low pressure hydrogen storage / utilization. CHEM. COMMUN., 2003, 690-691 reports a zero-CO2 emission and low-crossover ‘rechargeable’ PEM fuel cells using cyclohexane as an organic hydrogen reservoir. It also has advantages such as: (1) no crossover; (2) no CO2 / CO emissions; (3) fuel can be regenerated; (4) cyclic hydrocarbons have relatively high weight and volume contents of hydrogen, high boiling points (bp =80-190 ℃) , and are compatible with the existing petroleum infrastructure. However, TL or cyclohexane has low flashpoint and its industrial application is limited due to storage and transportation challenges.

[0005] Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2006, 8, 1724-1730 discloses direct PEM fuel cell using “organic chemical hydrides” with zero-CO2 emission and low-crossover. Various organic compounds, including cyclohexanol were tested. In the experiments of fuel cell operations, the fuels were vaporized and fed with N2 carrier gas. Thus, the fuels are very dilute and high energy is consumed.

[0006] US8338055 and JP2003323896 disclose the use of cyclohexanediol as a fuel. However, the product generated in US8338055 is cyclohexanedione and the product generated in JP2003323896 was not disclosed.

[0007] There is thus a significant need in the art for an improved fuel cell which uses cyclic hydrocarbons as organic hydrogen carriers, with desired characteristics such as for instance no crossover, zero emissions of carbon dioxide / carbon monoxide gas, high H2 capacity, safe, ease of handling, and low energy consumption.SUMMARY

[0008] The present invention provides a direct cyclic hydrocarbon fuel cell (DCHFC) , comprising:

[0009] i) an anode chamber containing an anode with an anode catalyst;

[0010] ii) a cathode chamber containing a cathode with a cathode catalyst; and

[0011] iii) a membrane disposed between the anode electrode and the cathode electrode;

[0012] wherein a solution comprising a compound having a cyclohexanediol function [Compound A] is introduced to the anode chamber to contact the anode catalyst and molecular oxygen is introduced to the cathode chamber to contact the  cathode catalyst to generate a compound having a cyclohexenedione or benzoquinone function [Compound B] and electricity.

[0013] In DCHFCs, a cyclic hydrocarbon is fed directly to the anode, at which an oxidation reaction occurs, while air or oxygen gas is sent to the cathode for the reduction reaction.

[0014] Advantageously, cyclohexanediol function releases 6 or 8 hydrogen ions, when forming the cyclohexenedione or benzoquinone function. Thus, higher H2 capacity is provided.

[0015] The Applicant has found that there is no crossover and no CO2 / CO emissions when operating the fuel cell.

[0016] Other subjects and characteristics, aspects and advantages of the present invention will emerge even more clearly on reading the detailed description and the examples that follow.

[0027] DETAILS OF THE INVENTION

[0028] The present invention provides a direct cyclic hydrocarbon fuel cell, comprising:

[0029] i) an anode chamber containing an anode with an anode catalyst;

[0030] ii) a cathode chamber containing a cathode with a cathode catalyst; and

[0031] iii) a membrane disposed between the anode electrode and the cathode electrode;

[0032] wherein a solution comprising a compound having a cyclohexanediol function [Compound A] is introduced to the anode chamber to contact the anode catalyst and molecular oxygen is introduced to the cathode chamber to contact the cathode catalyst to generate a compound having a cyclohexenedione or benzoquinone function [Compound B] and electricity.

[0033] Compound A and Compound B

[0034] As mentioned, Compound A is a compound having a cyclohexanediol function and Compound B is a compound having a cyclohexenedione or benzoquinone function.

[0035] The cyclohexanediol function can be selected from the group consisting of cyclohexane-1, 2-diol function, cyclohexane-1, 3-diol function and cyclohexane-1, 4-diol function, preferably cyclohexane-1, 2-diol function and cyclohexane-1, 4-diol function, more preferably cyclohexane-1, 4-diol function.

[0036] The cyclohexenedione function can be selected from the group consisting of cyclohex-3-ene-1, 2-dione function, cyclohex-4-ene-1, 3-dione function and cyclohex-2-ene-1, 4-dione function.

[0037] The benzoquinone function can be selected from the group consisting of 1, 2-benzoquinone function and 1, 4-benzoquinone function and preferably 1, 4-benzoquinone function.

[0038] On one hand, Compound A can be a cyclohexanediol selected from the group consisting of cyclohexane-1, 2-diol, cyclohexane-1, 3-diol and cyclohexane-1, 4-diol, preferably cyclohexane-1, 2-diol and cyclohexane-1, 4-diol, more preferably cyclohexane-1, 4-diol. Accordingly, Compound B generated can be selected from the group consisting of cyclohex-3-ene-1, 2-dione, cyclohex-4-ene-1, 3-dione, cyclohex-2-ene-1, 4-dione, 1, 2-benzoquinone, 1, 4-benzoquinone, preferably 1, 2-benzoquinone and 1, 4-benzoquinone, more preferably 1, 4-benzoquinone. Cyclohexanediols have high flashpoints and therefore are safe for storage and transportation. The Applicant has also surprisingly found that it is not necessary to vaporize the cyclohexanediol and use N2 carrier gas when operating the fuel cell.

[0039] On the other hand, Compound A can be a cyclohexanediol derivative selected from the group consisting of cyclohexanediols substituted with at least one functional group, decahydronaphthalene-1, 2-diol, decahydronaphthalene-1, 4-diol, tetradecahydroanthracene-9, 10-diol and tetradecahydrophenanthrene-9, 10-diol. Accordingly, Compound B generated can be selected from the group consisting of cyclohex-3-ene-1, 2-dione substituted with at least one functional group, cyclohex-4-ene-1, 3-dione substituted with at least one functional group, cyclohex-2-ene-1, 4-dione substituted with at least one functional group, 1, 2-benzoquinone substituted with at least one functional group, 1, 4-benzoquinone substituted with at least one functional group, 1, 2-naphthoquinone, 1, 4-naphthoquinone, 9, 10-anthraquinone and 9, 10-phenanthrenequinone.

[0040] The functional group of cyclohexanediols, cyclohexenediones or benzoquinones is not particularly limited, as long as its presence does not prevent the oxidation at anode. Said functional group can be selected from the group consisting of: alkyl, hydroxyl, alkoxy, alkylated amino, carboxyl, ester, cyano, nitro and halogen.

[0041] The fuel introduced to the anode chamber can be one and only one Compound A as defined above.

[0042] Alternatively, the fuel introduced into the anode chamber can be a mixture of different Compounds A as defined above.

[0043] In some preferred embodiments, the solution comprises a mixture of a cyclohexanediol and a cyclohexanediol derivative. It was found by the Applicant that some cyclohexanediol derivatives can modify the physical and chemical performance of cyclohexanediols. Said cyclohexanediol derivatives are notably C1-C5 alkyl cyclohexanediols and preferably methyl cyclohexanediols. In this embodiment, the cyclohexanediol advantageously has an amount of at least 60 %moles, preferably at least 70 %moles, more preferably at least 80 %moles, most preferably at least 90 %moles, with respect to the total moles of the cyclohexanediol and the cyclohexanediol derivative.

[0044] The source of Compound A is not particularly limited. Advantageously, Compound A is regenerated from compound B produced in the fuel cell. Thus cyclic hydrocarbon fuel

[0045] Solution

[0046] Advantageously, the solution comprises a solvent which can dissolve Compound A. Said solvent can be an organic solvent or water and preferably water.

[0047] In a particular embodiment, the solvent can be an ionic liquid.

[0048] Good results can be obtained when the concentration of Compound A in the solution is from 1 to 30 mol / L.

[0049] The solution can optionally comprise a basic compound or an acidic compound which can activate hydroxyl groups of Compound A and therefore facilitate the oxidation.

[0050] The solution can be neutral, acidic or basic, depending on the substances it contains.

[0051] For example, when the solution is neutral or acidic and Compound A is a cyclohexanediol, the reactions occur in the DCHFC are as follows:

[0052] Anodic reaction: Cyclohexanediol→Benzoquinone + 8H++ 8e-

[0053] Cathodic reaction: 2O2 + 8H++ 8e-→4H2O

[0054] Full reaction: Cyclohexanediol + 2O2→Benzoquinone + 4H2O

[0055] For example, when the solution is basic and Compound A is a cyclohexanediol, the reactions occur in the DCHFC are as follows:

[0056] Anodic reaction: Cyclohexanediol + 8OH-→Benzoquinone + 8H2O+ 8e-

[0057] Cathodic reaction: 2O2+ 4H2O+ 8e-→8OH-

[0058] Full reaction: Cyclohexanediol + 2O2→Benzoquinone + 4H2O

[0059] Preferably, the basic compound can be an organic base, such as pyridine (C5H5N) , and alkylamines, or an inorganic base, such as lithium hydroxide (LiOH) , sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) .

[0060] Preferably, the acidic compound can be an organic acid, such as acetic acid (CH3COOH) , formic acid (HCOOH) , or an inorganic acid, such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4) , hydrochloric acid (HCl) , nitric acid (HNO3) , phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and perchloric acid (HClO4) .

[0061] The concentration of the acidic compound or the basic compound generally depends on the solvent. For example, the concentration is from 1 to 10 mol / L when the solvent is water.

[0062] Membrane

[0063] The selection of the membrane between the two electrodes generally depends on the solution introduced to the anode chamber. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is selected when the solution is neutral or acidic. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) is selected when the solution is basic.

[0064] The PEM used in the fuel cell of the present invention is not particularly limited. For example, the PEM can be a PFSA polymers, such as those having the trade designations “ E98-09S” , “ E98-15S” and “ E87-12S” . The PEM can also be a membrane, such as those having the trade designations “ 212” , “ 115” , “ 117” and “ 1110” .

[0065] The AEM used in the fuel cell of the present invention is not particularly limited. For example, AemionTM,  Anion Exchange Membrane,  Anion Exchange Membrane or Fumasep FAA-3 series anion exchange membranes.

[0068] The metal elements for the purpose of the present invention are also referred to as metalloids. The term metalloid is generally designating an element which has properties between those of metals and non-metals. Typically, metalloids have a metallic appearance but are relatively brittle and have a moderate electrical conductivity. The six commonly recognized metalloids are boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, and tellurium. Other elements also recognized as metalloids include aluminum, polonium, and astatine. On a standard periodic table all of these elements may be found in a diagonal region of the p-block, extending from boron at one end, to astatine at the other (as indicated above) .

[0069] The metal element used as the anode catalyst or the cathode catalyst can be in the form of elemental metal, metal alloy, metal oxide or metal complex.

[0070] In some embodiments, the anode catalyst or the cathode catalyst can further comprise a non-metal element, such as C, N and P. For example, the non-metal element can be a dopant in the metal catalyst.

[0071] In some embodiments, the metal catalyst is a supported metal catalyst. The support is not particularly limited. Typical examples of support can be carbon, alumina and silica.

[0073] - elemental metal comprises element (s) selected from the group consisting of Pd, Pt, Ru, Au, Rh, Ir, Bi, Sn, B and any combination thereof;

[0074] - metal alloy, such as Pt-Au, Pd-Au, Pt-Pd, Pt-Ru and Pd-Ru.

[0075] The selection of the cathode catalyst generally depends on the solution introduced to the anode chamber.

[0108] According to LSV results, cyclohexanediol to benzoquinone reaction is promising.

[0109] DFT calculation:

[0110] All calculations were performed at the density functional theory (DFT) level using the Spartan' 20 program package. For all species, conformational sampling was performed at the molecular mechanics level with MMFF force field to identify the energetically lowest conformer. The energetically lowest conformer for each molecule was then optimized at the wB97X-D / 6-31G*level in order to  confirm the nature of the stationary points. Computations of the harmonic vibrational frequencies were performed to calculate the zero-point energy and the thermodynamics corrections to obtain a Gibbs free energy at room temperature (25 ℃) . Solvation energies were treated with the SMD method and acetonitrile as the solvent. Final single point energies were computed with M06-2X functional and 6-311+G**basis sets.

[0111] The reaction Gibbs free energies (ΔG) reported here were the sum of the following contributions: (1) the electronic reaction energy (ΔE) at the M06-2X / 6-311+G**level, (2) the difference in zero-point energies and thermostatistical contributions (ΔGvib) at room temperature, and (3) the difference in the solvation energies (ΔGsolv) for the products and reactants.

[0112] From DFT results, cyclohexanediol has the lowest free energy change, which means the reaction of cyclohexanediol in fuel cells is more preferred in thermodynamics.

[0113] Example 1

[0114] When the fuel cell is working, cyclohexanediol dissolved in solvent is pumped into the anodic side of the PEM fuel cell, and it is directly oxidized on the anode catalyst to form benzoquinone and proton. Benzoquinone will flow back to the reservoir while the proton will go through the PEM to the cathodic side of the fuel cell, then protons will react with oxygen to form water.

[0115] Example 2

[0116] When the fuel cell is working, cyclohexanediol dissolved in solvent is pumped into the anodic side of the AEM fuel cell, and it is directly oxidized on the anode catalyst and reacted with OH-ions to form benzoquinone and water. Bensozuqinone will flow back to the reservoir. On the cathodic side, oxygen will be reduced to form hydroxide ions and they will go through the hydroxide ion exchange membrane to balance the charges in the anodic side.
