Description

AIR CONDITIONER AND CLEANING SYSTEMFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present subject matter relates generally to air conditioner units, including systems and methods for air conditioner cleaning.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Air conditioner units are conventionally used to adjust the temperature within structures such as dwellings and office buildings. In particular, one-unit type or single-package room air conditioner units (i.e., non-split units) , such as window units, single-package vertical units (SPVU) , vertical packaged air conditioners (VPAC) , or package terminal air conditioners (PTAC) may be used to adjust the temperature in, for example, a single room or group of rooms of a structure. Such units are especially common in hotels, rental apartments, and assisted-living facilities in which a large number of occupants live within the same building.

[0003] A typical one-unit type air conditioner or air conditioning appliance includes an indoor portion and an outdoor portion. The indoor portion generally communicates (e.g., exchanges air) with the area within a building or indoor environment, and the outdoor portion generally communicates (e.g., exchanges air) with the area outside a building. Accordingly, the air conditioner unit generally extends through, for example, a wall of the structure. Generally, a fan may be operable to rotate to motivate air through the indoor portion. Another fan may be operable to rotate to motivate air through the outdoor portion. A sealed cooling system including a compressor is generally housed within the air conditioner unit to treat (e.g., cool or heat) air as it is circulated through, for example, the indoor portion of the air conditioner unit. One or more control boards are typically provided to direct the operation of various elements of the particular air conditioner unit.

[0004] One of the challenges that exist is cleaning and disinfecting surfaces within the air conditioner. For instance, portions of the air conditioner may build up moisture, which can lead to mildew or propagation of bacteria. A user may disconnect the air conditioner, dismount the air conditioner from a window or wall, disassemble portions of the air conditioner, and manually clean various surfaces. Such manual exertion can  be laborious to the extent that a user may not clean and disinfect the air conditioner as often as may be recommended or necessary.

[0005] Accordingly, improved air conditioner units and cleaning systems would be beneficial and advantageous.

[0006] BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0007] Aspects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part in the following description, or may be obvious from the description, or may be learned through practice of the invention.

[0008] An aspect of the present disclosure is directed to an air conditioner unit having a cabinet defining an inlet into which a flow of air is receivable for heat extraction. A heat exchanger system is configured to remove heat from the flow of air. The heat exchanger system includes a fan device configured to selectively generate the flow of air receivable through the inlet for heat extraction. A reservoir is positioned upstream of the inlet at the cabinet. The reservoir is configured to receive water or water-based solution having chlorine. An electrolyzing device is configured to generate free chlorine from water or water-based solution provided to the reservoir. An atomizer device is positioned at the reservoir and positioned to eject a fluid toward the inlet at the cabinet. The fluid includes the free chlorine generated from the electrolyzing device.

[0009] These and other features, aspects and advantages of the present invention will become better understood with reference to the following description and appended claims. The accompanying drawings, which are incorporated in and constitute a part of this specification, illustrate embodiments of the invention and, together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0043] In various embodiments, the wall 82 is rotatable e.g., along direction of rotation depicted schematically via arrow 86 in FIG. 4. The wall 82 is rotatable between a closed position covering the reservoir 23, such as depicted in FIG. 9A, and an extended position at an oblique angle between the reservoir 23 and the inlet 21, such as depicted in FIG. 9B. Wall 82 may extend at one or more oblique angular positions to adjust the direction, height, or flowrate of fluid 39 through or across the wall 82, such as depicted schematically via FIGS. 9A-9B.

[0044] Referring to FIGS. 9A-9B, in some embodiments, the wall 82 includes an opening 84 extending through the wall 82 to permit flow of fluid 39 therethrough.  Fluid 39 containing free chlorine is allowed to flow through opening 84 and / or around wall 82, such as depicted at FIGS. 9A-9B. Opening 84 may include a circular or elongated (e.g., ovular, elliptical, or polygonal) hole or slot, or plurality thereof.

[0045] Referring briefly to FIG. 8, in some embodiments, a water level detection sensor 90 is positioned to determine a water level at the reservoir 23. For instance, sensor 90 may be positioned in serial fluid communication between the reservoir 23 and pump 74 or water source 81. The water level detection sensor 90 is configured to selectively permit flow of water or water-based solution from the water source 81 to the reservoir 23. The water level detection sensor 90 may include a Hall Effect sensor, a Reed Switch, a mechanical contact switch, or a capacitance sensor. When water level at the reservoir 23 decreases beyond a predetermined amount, a signal is transmitted to a controller (e.g., controller 85) to command flow of water or water-based solution to the reservoir 23. For instance, controller 85 may be configured to command release of fluid from a from a water source 81 (e.g., the second reservoir 25, a tap water source, etc. ) to the first reservoir 23.

[0046] In some embodiments, controller 85 is communicatively coupled to the water level detection sensor 90 to receive a signal (e.g., an electric signal) indicating water level below a predetermined amount. Controller 85 is communicatively coupled to pump 74 to command flow of fluid from the water source 81 to the reservoir 23. Sensor 90 may transmit (or discontinue transmitting) a signal to controller 85 when the water level at reservoir 23 is at the desired amount, and controller 85 discontinues operation of pump 74.

[0047] The operation of air conditioner unit 10 including heat exchanger system 35, pump 74, atomizer device 72, and electrolyzing device 70, or other suitable components, may be controlled by a control board or controller 85. Controller 85 may be in communication (via for example a suitable wired or wireless connection) to such components of the air conditioner unit 10. By way of example, the controller 85 may include a memory and one or more processing devices such as microprocessors, CPUs or the like, such as general or special purpose microprocessors operable to execute programming instructions or micro-control code associated with operation of air conditioner unit 10. The memory may be a separate component from the processor or may be included onboard within the processor. The memory may represent random  access memory such as DRAM, or read only memory such as ROM or FLASH. Generally, the processor executes programming instructions stored in memory.

[0048] Air conditioner unit 10 may additionally include a control panel 87 and one or more user inputs 89, which may be included in control panel 87. The user inputs 89 may be in communication with the controller 85. A user of the air conditioner unit 10 may interact with the user inputs 89 to operate the air conditioner unit 10, and user commands may be transmitted between the user inputs 89 and controller 85 to facilitate operation of the air conditioner unit 10 based on such user commands. A display 88 may additionally be provided in the control panel 87, and may be in communication with the controller 85. Display 88 may, for example be a touchscreen or other text-readable display screen, or alternatively may simply be a light that can be activated and deactivated as required to provide an indication of, for example, an event or setting for the air conditioner unit 10.

[0049] In some embodiments, the atomizer device 72, the electrolyzing device 70, and the fan device 37 are electrically coupled to operate simultaneously in a cleaning mode. Controller 85 may command operation of the fan device 37 in a low speed mode when in the cleaning mode, such as to generate a relatively low pressure or low flowrate of fluid across inlet 21. The low flowrate may promote flow of chlorine fluid through inlet 21 and onto desired portions of the air conditioner unit 10 cleaning.

[0050] In still some embodiments, wall 82 is selectively positionable between the reservoir 23 and the fan device 37 relative to the flow of fluid ejected from the atomizer device 72, such as described herein. Wall 82 may include a control switch configured to activate the cleaning mode when the wall 82 is positioned in an extended position at the oblique angle (e.g., depicted in FIG. 9B) . The control switch is configured to de-activate the cleaning mode when the wall 82 is positioned in a closed position, such as covering the reservoir 23 (e.g., depicted in FIG. 9A) .

[0051] Embodiments of the air conditioner unit 10 depicted and described herein include a self-cleaning apparatus configured to generate free chlorine and distribute the fluid including the free chlorine across desired components of the air conditioner unit 10 (e.g., the heat exchanger system 35) for disinfection and cleaning. Embodiments provided herein may be included integrally with the air conditioner unit 10, or as separable portions. Embodiments provided herein may facilitate cleaning and  disinfection without requiring disassembly of components of the air conditioner unit 10.

[0052] This written description uses examples to disclose the invention, including the best mode, and also to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, including making and using any devices or systems and performing any incorporated methods. The patentable scope of the invention is defined by the claims, and may include other examples that occur to those skilled in the art. Such other examples are intended to be within the scope of the claims if they include structural elements that do not differ from the literal language of the claims, or if they include equivalent structural elements with insubstantial differences from the literal languages of the claims.
