Description

ESTIMATING A REMAINING NUMBER OF USAGE SESSIONS OF AN AEROSOL-GENERATING DEVICE

[0001] The present application claims priority to PCT International Application No. PCT / CN2024 / 099551, filed on June 17, 2024 and entitled "ESTIMATING A REMAINING NUMBER OF USAGE SESSIONS OF AN AEROSOL-GENERATING DEVICE" , which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.

[0002] The present disclosure relates to a computer-implemented method of estimating a remaining number of usage sessions providable by an aerosol-generating device, an aerosol-generating system, a computer program and a computer-readable medium.

[0003] Aerosol-generating devices are typically designed as handheld devices that can be used by a user for consuming or experiencing, for instance in one or more usage sessions, aerosol generated from an aerosol-generating substrate or an aerosol-generating article, for example by heating. The aerosol-generating devices the present disclosure pertains to are mainly directed to the field of tobacco and tobacco-substitute products, as well as e-vapor devices, for example heated tobacco products (HTP) , heat-not-burn devices, electronic cigarettes, e-vapor devices, and / or vaporisers. The aerosol-generating devices of the present disclosure may also pertain to other types of inhalers, dispensers, or atomizers, for example inhalers, dispensers, or atomizers for medical applications.

[0004] Exemplary aerosol-generating substrates can comprise solid substrate material, such as tobacco material or tobacco cast leaves (TCL) material. The substrate material can, for example, be assembled, often with other elements or components, to form a substantially stick-shaped aerosol-generating article. Such a stick or aerosol-generating article can be configured in shape and size to be inserted at least partially into the aerosol-generating device. The aerosol-generating device may comprise a heating element or heater device for heating the aerosol-generating article and / or the aerosol-generating substrate. The heating element or heater device may be part of the aerosol-generating article and / or the aerosol-generating device. Alternatively or additionally, aerosol-generating substrates can comprise one or more liquids and / or solids, which can, for example, be supplied to the aerosol-generating device in the form of a cartridge or container. Corresponding exemplary aerosol-generating articles can, for example, comprise a cartridge containing or fillable with the liquid and / or solid substrate, which can be vaporized during aerosol consumption by the user based on heating the substrate and / or liquid. Usually, such cartridge or container can be coupled to, attached to or at least partially inserted into the aerosol-generating device. Alternatively, the cartridge may be fixedly mounted to the aerosol-generating device and refilled by inserting liquid and / or solid into the cartridge. The aerosol generated from the aerosol-generating substrate or article may comprise or include one or more of nicotine, aroma, sugar, moisturising agent, botanicals, preservative, flavouring, for example cocoa, liquorice, menthol and lactic acid or other additives. The aerosol generated from the aerosol-generating substrate or article may additionally or alternatively comprise one or more pharmaceutical agents or drugs and may include one or more adjuvants.

[0005] For generating the aerosol during use or consumption, heat can be supplied by a heating element, heater device or heat source to heat at least a portion or part of the aerosol-generating substrate. The heating element, heater device or heat source can be arranged in the handheld device or a handheld part of the aerosol-generating device. Alternatively or additionally, at least a part of or the entire heating element or heater device or heat source can be fixedly associated with or arranged within an aerosol-generating article, for instance in the form of a stick or cartridge, which can be attached to and / or powered by the handheld device or handheld part of the aerosol-generating device.

[0006] Exemplary heating elements or heater devices can be based on one or more of resistive heating, inductive heating and microwave heating using electrical energy supplied via, drawn from or stored in an energy storage or battery of the aerosol-generating device. As used herein, a battery of the aerosol-generating device can generally refer to an energy storage of the aerosol-generating device configured to store electrical energy. Accordingly, the term energy storage can include one or more batteries, one or more capacitors, one or more accumulators or other types of energy storage. Also, any reference to a battery herein can include a plurality of batteries.

[0007] Typically, aerosol-generating devices comprise an energy storage, for example a battery, providing the electrical energy needed to operate the aerosol-generating device and especially for heating the aerosol-generating substrate and / or article, for example to generate aerosol in one or more usage sessions using one or more aerosol-generating articles. The battery may, for example, be a lithium-ion battery.

[0008] As used herein, a usage session may refer to a period of time, during which a user may use the device to generate, consume, experience or inhale aerosol using the aerosol-generating device. Therein, a usage session may be finite. In other words, a usage session may have a start, an end and a duration. The duration of the usage session as measured by time may be influenced by use during the usage session. The duration of the usage session may have a maximum duration determined by a maximum time from the start of the usage session. The duration of the usage session may be less than the maximum time if one or more monitored parameters reaches a predetermined threshold before the maximum time from the start of the usage session. By way of example, the one or more monitored parameters may comprise one or more of: i) a cumulative puff count of a series of puffs drawn by a user since the start of the usage session, and ii) a cumulative volume of aerosol evolved from the aerosol-forming substrate since the start of the usage session.

[0009] As mentioned, aerosol-generating devices may comprise an energy storage providing the electrical energy needed to operate the aerosol-generating device and especially for heating the aerosol-generating substrate and / or article, for example to generate aerosol in one or more usage sessions using one or more aerosol-generating articles. A battery capacity may typically be chosen so that the aerosol-generating device may provide a user with at least a minimum number, for example at least two or more, consecutive usage sessions or experiences without having to recharge the battery or the aerosol-generating device in between. To improve user experience, aerosol-generating devices may usually be designed to only allow a user to start a usage session if the battery contains enough electrical energy to fully complete the usage session. Typically, the electrical energy or energy storage capacity needed for one usage session is predetermined and known. The total number of providable sessions may therefore be computed by dividing the total energy storage capacity by the energy storage capacity needed for one usage session. However, the energy needed for a usage session may be highly variable and may depend on many factors from external parameters like ambient temperature to user habits and the type of consumable used. The energy storage capacity needed for one usage session therefore differs from one user to another. Complex statistical models used to determine an energy storage capacity needed for one usage session for a specific user may be hampered by the limited computational power typically available on these devices, which is why a fixed value for the energy storage capacity needed for one usage session is used. An individual user may, however, use more or less electrical energy  / energy storage capacity per usage session. It may therefore happen that a user may be denied a further usage session despite there being a good chance that such a session could be completely provided under the specific circumstances. It may also happen that a user may be allowed to start a further usage session which then cannot be completed due to lack of electrical energy. Both cases are detrimental to the user experience.

[0010] It may therefore be desirable to provide for an improved estimation of the remaining number of usage sessions which may be provided by the aerosol-generating device to a specific, individual user. This estimation might then be used for improved control of the aerosol-generating device and for more detailed information providable to the user.

[0011] These advantages may be achieved by the features described herein.

[0012] In an aspect of the present disclosure, a computer-implemented method of estimating a remaining number of usage sessions providable by an aerosol-generating device is provided. The method comprises: determining a current energy storage capacity of an energy storage of the aerosol-generating device; determining an energy consumption of each usage session of a plurality of usage sessions based on a measurement of the energy consumption of the energy storage; determining a mean energy consumption per usage session from the plurality of usage sessions; determining a standard deviation of the energy consumption of the plurality of usage sessions; determining an estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session from the mean energy consumption per usage session and the standard deviation of the energy consumption of the plurality of usage sessions; and determining the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device from the estimated energy consumption and the current energy storage capacity.

[0013] An estimation according to the present disclosure may describe a determination by statistics, wherein the determined result represents a predicted value which may be as close to an upcoming value as the circumstances and the statistical methods allow. In other words, the estimation may result in a value which lies within a certain range around the upcoming “true” value. The likelihood that the estimate is in this range may be given as a confidence interval. While the estimated value may deviate from the upcoming true value, it is nevertheless usable because it is derived from past values and therefore from the best information available. The present disclosure provides a method of estimating a remaining number of usage sessions providable by an aerosol-generating device which is based on simple statistics, which may be implemented with only the information available at the aerosol-generating device itself and which is easy enough to compute despite the limited computational power available in aerosol-generating systems and / or devices.

[0014] The current or present energy storage capacity may describe the amount of electric charge the energy storage can deliver at the rated voltage of the energy storage. It may therefore represent the amount of electrical energy stored in the energy storage. The current energy storage capacity may be given in the unit of Ampere-hour (Ah) , for example in milliampere-hour (mAh) . Alternatively, the current energy storage capacity may be given as a state of charge (SoC) of the energy storage, which may be represented by a percentage. This percentage, together with the nominal capacity of the energy storage, also represents the current or present energy storage capacity. Another possibility may be to measure the current energy storage capacity in terms of supply voltage of the energy storage. During the discharge of an energy storage, the voltage or supply voltage drops. Typically, there is a linear relationship between the voltage and the time during discharge. Therefore, the current voltage provided by the energy storage may be used to represent the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage. The other representations may also be calculated from the current voltage.

[0015] The energy consumption of a usage session may describe the electrical energy or capacity drained from the energy storage between the start and end of the usage session. The energy consumption of the usage session may describe the total energy used from the energy storage for the entirety of the usage session. This value may also be given as a capacity (for example in mAh) , as a percentage of SoC of the energy storage, or as a voltage drop at the energy storage during the usage session. The exact value of the energy consumption may vary per usage session depending on external factors and the habits of the user. There may be significant differences in the energy consumption per usage session between different users. For this reason, the present disclosure provides an estimation of the energy consumption tailored to an individual user to improve control of the aerosol-generating device.

[0016] In the method according to the present disclosure, the energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions is determined, particularly directly determined. Specifically, the energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions is determined based on a measurement of the energy consumption of or at the energy storage. This may mean that the energy consumption of each usage session is measured, i.e. directly measured, from the energy storage, e.g. battery, parameters of the energy storage and / or a fuel gauge of the energy storage. In other words, the energy consumption or actual energy consumption is measured from the energy storage or from energy storage parameters directly representing the state of the energy storage. For example, the energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions may be determined from the change in capacity (for example in mAh) of the energy storage, from the change in percentage of SoC of the energy storage, or from the voltage drop at the energy storage during the usage session, i.e. from the change in voltage at the energy storage, particularly in a comparison from before the usage session to after the usage session. Directly measuring the energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions from the energy storage is advantageous compared to indirect measurements or estimates because of higher accuracy. For example, indirectly estimating the energy consumption of a usage session from the puff duration during that usage session may introduce inaccuracies, as influential parameters like the puff strength or intensity or environmental factors like ambient temperature are not taken into account. A direct measurement from the energy storage or at the energy storage level includes all these factors by default.

[0017] The mean energy consumption per usage session may be an average value of the energy consumptions of all usage sessions taken into consideration. It may be computed by adding together the energy consumptions of the plurality of usage sessions and dividing by the number of usage sessions in the plurality of usage sessions.

[0018] Alternatively, the mean energy consumption per usage session may be computed such that the values of more recent usage sessions are differently weighted, for example given more weight in the average, as the values of usage sessions prior to the more recent usage sessions. For example, the mean energy consumption per usage session may be computed as an or using exponential moving average (EMA) . An EMA is a type of moving average that places a greater weight and significance on the most recent data points. It may be used in time series analysis to smooth out short-term fluctuations and highlight longer-term trends or cycles. For example, the mean energy consumption per usage session may be computed in this way such that the more recent values of the energy consumption per usage session are given more weight and / or such that older values of the energy consumption per usage session are given less weight. In this way, if the habits of the user and therefore the energy consumption per usage session change, this may be better reflected in the mean energy consumption per usage session obtained using EMA.

[0019] EMA may be implemented using filters commonly used in digital signal processing, for example through finite impulse response (FIR) or infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. A FIR filter is a type of digital filter. Its impulse response settles to zero in a finite amount of time. This means that the filter's output depends only on a finite number of input values and that they rely on a fixed number of past input values to compute the current output. FIR filters are known for their stability and simplicity, as they do not require feedback and are inherently stable. An IIR filter, on the other hand, has an impulse response that continues indefinitely. This type of filter uses feedback, meaning its output depends on both current and past input values. For example, IIR may use a recursive formula where the current output depends on the previous output. This recursive nature allows EMA using IIR to efficiently compute the average without needing to store a large number of past data points. IIR filters are more computationally efficient but can be more complex to design than FIR filters. It may therefore be provided that the mean energy consumption per usage session may be computed as an EMA based in FIR or IIR.

[0020] The standard deviation may describe a measure of the amount of variation of a random variable expected about its mean. The standard deviation may, particularly, be a population standard deviation. The calculation of the standard deviation and the population standard deviation is done as commonly known, for example as the square root of the variance, and is not described herein.

[0021] Using the mean energy consumption per usage session and the standard deviation, an estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session, for example the next usage session, may be determined or calculated. By using the standard deviation, the confidence interval of the estimate, and thereby the degree of probability that the estimate is accurate, may be adjusted, as will be explained below in more detail. An accurate estimate may mean, in the present context, that the energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session has not been underestimated, meaning that a usage session that was allowed to start may also be completely finished by the user without the aerosol-generating device running out of electrical energy before the usage session is finished.

[0022] The estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session is used to determine the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device, for example by dividing the current energy storage capacity by the estimated energy consumption. Within the degree of certainty given by or derivable from the confidence interval, the aerosol-generating device may be able to provide the resulting number of usage sessions to the specific, individual user before having to be recharged. The present disclosure therefore provides a simple, yet individually tailored information about the remaining number of usage sessions, which may be used to improve device control and user experience alike.

[0023] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the method may comprise storing the energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions in a memory or data storage. For each usage session of which the used capacity of the energy storage is known, a separate value may therefore be stored. In this way, all the stored values may be available for later use, for example for statistics as described herein or for other purposes when read out from the memory or data storage. The data may therefore be provided for readout through a data connection.

[0024] In the case of a new aerosol-generating device or a reset aerosol-generating device, for example because of a change of user, no value or only a small number of values for the energy consumption per usage session may be available. In this case, the estimation according to the present disclosure may not be accurate enough to improve user experience. It may therefore be provided that the method is only used or implemented whenever enough data is available to make an accurate enough estimation. In other words, the estimation may only be made when enough data is available so that statistically significant results may be achieved. For this, the method may comprise determining whether the number of usage sessions of which the energy consumption has been determined is greater than or equal to a predefined threshold. All of the method steps according to the present disclosure, except the step of determining an energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions, may then only be performed when the number of usage sessions of which the energy consumption has been determined is greater than or equal to the predefined threshold. In other words, the method may only comprise determining the energy consumptions of each occurring usage session until the predefined threshold is reached and / or surpassed. After the predefined threshold has been reached and / or surpassed, the method may then also comprise the further steps leading to the determination of the estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session and the determining of the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device. Until the predefined threshold has been reached, the remaining number of usage sessions may be determined conventionally by dividing the current energy storage capacity by a predefined fixed value for the energy consumption per usage session. For example, aerosol-generating devices typically have a predefined maximum energy consumption providable per usage session. This value may be used until the predefined threshold has been reached.

[0025] The predefined threshold may be any number securing that the estimate according to the present disclosure is accurate enough for the present purpose. Exactly how accurate the estimate needs to be may also vary between different users and their preferences. The predefined threshold may be between 5 and 150, for example between 10 and 100 or between 15 and 80 or between 20 and 60 or between 25 and 40. The predefined threshold may, for example, be 10 or 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 or 70 or 80 or 90 or 100 or 110 or 120 or 130 or 140 or 150. As this count of usage sessions may be reached relatively quickly, the user may profit from the method according to the present disclosure relatively soon after starting with a new or reset device.

[0026] As already mentioned, one of the goals of the present disclosure may be to avoid a situation in which a user starts a usage session but runs out of electrical energy during the usage session so that the usage session may not be fully completed. Therefore, it may be important that the estimated energy consumption does not underestimate the upcoming usage session. To increase accuracy of the estimation in this regard, it may therefore be provided that determining the estimated energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session comprises adding the mean energy consumption per usage session and the standard deviation. In other words, the estimated energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session may be calculated by adding the value of the mean energy consumption per usage session and the standard deviation. In this way, and underestimation of the energy consumption of the upcoming usage session may be made less likely. The remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device may then be determined by dividing the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage by the estimated energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session.

[0027] To adjust the accuracy of the determination of the estimated energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session, the standard deviation may be multiplied by a factor when determining the estimated energy consumption. By using a factor smaller than 1, the risk of underestimating the energy consumption of the upcoming usage session may be increased. Conversely, by using a factor greater than 1, the risk of underestimating the energy consumption of the upcoming usage session may be decreased. The factor may be an integer. For example the factor may be 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4. Assuming that the energy consumption per usage session satisfies or follows a normal distribution, at least when a large number of values have been determined, using a factor of 1 for the standard deviation leads to a confidence interval of 84%. This means that there is an 84%chance that the upcoming usage session may have an energy consumption at maximum equal to the mean energy consumption plus the standard deviation. Using a factor of 2 for the standard deviation leads to a confidence interval of 97, 6%. This means that there is an 97,6%chance that the upcoming usage session may have an energy consumption at maximum equal to the mean energy consumption plus two times the standard deviation. Using a factor of 3 for the standard deviation leads to a confidence interval of 99, 7%. This means that there is an 99, 7%chance that the upcoming usage session may have an energy consumption at maximum equal to the mean energy consumption plus three times the standard deviation. Using a factor of 4 for the standard deviation leads to a confidence interval of 99, 8%. This means that there is an 99, 8%chance that the upcoming usage session may have an energy consumption at maximum equal to the mean energy consumption plus four times the standard deviation.

[0028] As explained above, using a higher factor for multiplying the standard deviation when determining the estimated energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session may lead to a higher chance of not underestimating the energy consumption of the upcoming usage session. However, simultaneously, the chance of overestimating the energy consumption of the upcoming usage session may be increased. This, in turn, may lead to an unrealistically low number of remaining usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device before a recharging of the energy storage is necessary. In the end, whether a user prefers a very high chance of not underestimating the energy consumption of the upcoming usage session or a more realistic number of remaining usage sessions providable may be different from user to user due to personal preferences. It may therefore be provided that the factor is determined from a user input. For example, a user may change the factor used to multiply the standard deviation for determining the estimated energy consumption and therefore also the remaining number of usage sessions in the device preferences through an input either at the aerosol-generating device itself, for example at the user interface of the aerosol-generating device, or through a companion device or a computing device such as a smartphone, a tablet computer or a personal computer having a data connection with the aerosol-generating device.

[0029] Aerosol-generating devices may have a maximum energy consumption that is providable in any one usage session. Even if the user wanted to prolong the usage session, the usage session may be terminated when the maximum energy consumption has been reached. This may be, for example, for security reasons to prevent overheating of the aerosol-generating device. Therefore, an estimated energy consumption greater than the maximum energy consumption may merely lead to an underestimation of the remaining usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device before recharging of the energy storage without providing any usable information to the user. The method may therefore comprise determining whether the estimated energy consumption is greater than or equal to a predetermined maximum energy consumption. Further, the method may comprise substituting the predetermined maximum energy consumption for the estimated energy consumption, particularly in the step of determining the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device, when it is determined that the estimated energy consumption is greater than or equal to the predetermined maximum energy consumption. In other words, whenever an estimated energy consumption is determined that is greater than or equal to the maximum energy consumption, the maximum energy consumption may be used instead of the estimated energy consumption. In this way, underestimating the remaining usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device may be prevented.

[0030] Having to abort an already started usage session due to a lack of energy storage capacity may be regarded as a negative user experience. To make sure that the user can always completely finish a started usage session, it may be provided that a usage session may only be started when the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage of the aerosol-generating device at least covers the predetermined maximum energy consumption per usage session. In other words, the method may comprise prohibiting an additional usage session before recharging of the energy storage of the aerosol-generating device when the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage is smaller than the predetermined maximum energy consumption. By this precautionary measure, and abort of an already running usage session due to lack of electrical energy may be avoided.

[0031] The predetermined maximum energy consumption may be between 75 mAh and 135 mAh, for example between 85 mAh and 125 mAh or between 95 mAh and 115 mAh. For example, the predetermined maximum energy consumption may be 90 mAh or 95 mAh or 100 mAh or 105 mAh or 110 mAh or 115 mAh or 120 mAh. These values are typically enough to fully complete a usage session using conventional consumables.

[0032] To further increase the accuracy of the estimation according to the present disclosure, it may be provided that outliers are removed from the data pool. For instance, it may be provided that the energy consumption of a usage session is only determined and stored and / or used for determining the mean energy consumption when the respective usage session is fully completed. As fully completed usage sessions use the most energy, these are the limiting factor for the number of remaining usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device. Determining whether or not the usage session has been fully completed may, for example, comprise receiving a user input. In this case, for example, the user may provide the information of whether or not the usage session was fully completed. Additionally or alternatively, whether or not the usage session was fully completed may be determined from the grade of depletion of the consumable used. A usage session may then be regarded as fully completed when the consumable has been depleted or has been substantially depleted. This may, for example, be determined from the temperatures reached in the heating device and / or the consumable and from the times these temperatures are held. The method may therefore comprise determining a grade of depletion of an aerosol-generating article or substrate reached during a usage session and only performing the determining of the energy consumption of the usage session when the grade of depletion is greater than or equal to a depletion threshold. The grade of depletion may be determined from a heating profile of the aerosol-generating article or substrate (consumable) during the usage session. By filtering out usage sessions which may, for example, have been aborted, the noise of the data set is reduced and the accuracy of the estimation is increased.

[0033] The depletion threshold may be given as a fixed percentage of the grade of depletion of the consumable. For example, the depletion threshold may be between 75%and 100%, for example between 80%and 100%or between 85%and 100%or between 90%and 100%or between 95%and 100%. For example, the depletion threshold may be 75%or 80%or 85%or 90%or 95%or 97.5%or 99%or 100%. On the other hand, the depletion threshold may also be dynamically determined. For example, an average value of the grades of depletion of the consumables of a plurality of usage sessions, for example all usage sessions independently of whether or not their energy consumption has been determined, may be used. In this way, the method may adjust to a user preferring not to completely deplete consumables.

[0034] Some aerosol-generating devices may comprise a fuel gauge, which may be part of the charge / discharge circuitry of the energy storage. A fuel gauge may allow a readout of energy storage parameters, such as the current energy storage capacity or the SoC. Therefore, determining the energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions may comprise reading the difference of an energy storage capacity or the difference of a SoC between before and after the usage session from a fuel gauge of the energy storage. Additionally or alternatively, determining the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage of the aerosol-generating device may comprise reading the current energy storage capacity or a state of charge from the fuel gauge of the energy storage.

[0035] However, some aerosol-generating devices may not comprise a fuel gauge. The readout from the fuel gauge may then be substituted by any suitable estimation means. For example, the energy consumption of a usage session may be estimated from the voltage drop at the energy storage between the beginning and the end of the usage session. Therefore, determining the energy consumption of each usage session of the plurality of usage sessions may comprise determining a voltage drop of the energy storage during the usage session and estimating the energy consumption of the usage session from the voltage drop. Typically, there may be a known linear relationship between the voltage of the energy storage and its current capacity, which may be exploited for determining the respective values from the voltage and / or voltage drop. Additionally or alternatively, determining the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage of the aerosol-generating device may comprise estimating the current energy storage capacity from a voltage value of the energy storage.

[0036] For example, estimating the current energy storage capacity from a voltage value of the energy storage may comprise using a formula obtained from regression analysis. For example, a formula may be obtained from regression analysis which uses the voltage value as an input variable and outputs the current energy storage capacity. As an example, the regression may comprise or provide the formula: current energy storage capacity = f1 (energy storage) + f2 (voltage) + f3 (SoC) , wherein f1 (energy storage) is a function of an energy storage parameter, for example a nominal or original or maximum energy storage capacity of the energy storage, f2 (voltage) is a function of the voltage value of the energy storage and f3 (SoC) is a function of the state of charge of the energy storage, for example of the battery level. In particular, the functions f1, f2, and f3 may comprise multiplications and / or sums of the respective values with coefficients or constants obtained from regression and / or fitting. As the actual values and the specific functions may vary between different devices and / or different energy storages used, results are not explicitly given herein, but may be easily obtained for specific use cases by the skilled person using the guidance given herein.

[0037] The energy consumption of each usage session may also be determined from measurements taken at a companion device of the aerosol-generating device. For example, the companion device may be configured to charge the aerosol-generating device with electrical energy. Whenever the aerosol-generating device is connected to the companion device for recharging, the companion device may determine the electrical energy recharged into the aerosol-generating device, for example in terms of energy storage capacity or SoC read from a fuel gauge of the companion device, or in terms of a voltage drop at the energy storage of the companion device during recharging. These values may then be divided by the number of usage sessions provided by the aerosol-generating device since the last recharging to calculate the energy consumption of each usage session. As will be explained in more detail below, the calculation itself may be performed by the aerosol-generating device, the companion device or even another device, for example a computing device such as a smartphone. If more than one aerosol-generating devices are used with the same companion device, a profile for each of the aerosol-generating devices may be stored, either in the aerosol-generating device, the companion device or a computing device, to differentiate between the devices and possibly even users.

[0038] Besides determining the remaining number of usage sessions for the aerosol-generating device, the companion device may also determine the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the remaining charge of the energy storage of the companion device. For example, the companion device may determine the voltage drop at the energy storage of the companion device for each usage session of the aerosol-generating device. To determine the voltage drop for each usage session, the companion device may determine the voltage drop from charging the aerosol-generating device. This may mean that the difference in voltage at the energy storage of the companion device before and after charging the aerosol-generating device may be measured. In turn, the current energy storage capacity of the aerosol-generating device may be measured before and after charging. Additionally, the aerosol-generating device may determine the energy consumption of each usage session, for example as explained herein, for each usage session between charging events. The number of usage sessions between charging events may also be counted. The companion device may then be configured to determine the voltage drop of each of the usage sessions from the following formula:

[0039] Vn = (Vstart –Vend) *En  /  (Eend –Estart) , wherein n may be an integer between 1 and N, N may be the number of usage sessions between charging events, Vn may be the voltage drop of each of the usage session between the charging events, Vstart may be the voltage at the energy storage of the companion device before charging, Vend may be the voltage at the energy storage of the companion device after charging, En, i.e. E1, …, EN, may be the energy consumption of each usage session between charging events, Eend may be the current energy storage capacity of the aerosol-generating device after charging, and Estart may be the current energy storage capacity of the aerosol-generating device before charging.

[0040] The companion device may then be configured to determine the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the companion device, by recharging the aerosol-generating device, in the same way as herein described for the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device. The voltage drop as determined above may in this case be used as energy consumption of each usage session of a plurality of usage sessions based on a measurement of the energy consumption of the energy storage at the companion device.

[0041] The aerosol-generating device may be able to perform a pause mode. A pause mode may refer to a special mode of the aerosol-generating device allowing a pause during a usage session. Pause mode therefore may not pertain to and may be distinct from resting times between usage sessions, as will be more closely described below.

[0042] The aerosol-generating device may be operated in at least two operation modes, an aerosol-releasing mode and a pause mode. The aerosol-generating device may be configured to heat the heating element, the aerosol-generating article and / or the substrate at a first temperature level in the aerosol-releasing mode. Therein, the first temperature level may correspond to a predetermined heating temperature or a temperature above, which may be sufficient to generate aerosol. The aerosol-generating device may further be configured to heat the heating element, the aerosol-generating article and / or the substrate at a second temperature level below the first temperature level in a pause mode of the aerosol-generating device. The second temperature level may, for example, refer to a temperature above room temperature and below the first temperature level.

[0043] A user experience, also referred to as usage session or experience of an aerosol-generating article herein, may be interrupted, for example by switching the device into the pause mode, and resumed by a user at a later, wherein the aerosol-generating article or substrate may be kept in pause mode of the aerosol-generating device at a temperature below the first temperature level and / or below the predetermined heating temperature used during normal use of the device (in particular during a user experience or usage session) , but still above or well above room temperature. That is, the second temperature level preferably may be chosen such as to avoid degradation of the non-depleted substrate or aerosol-generating article. In particular, the second temperature level may be chosen such as to be sufficiently low in order to minimize depletion of the substrate or article during the pause mode, and at the same time to be sufficiently high in order to avoid vapor to condensate in the device which otherwise could affect the quality of the non-depleted aerosol-generating substrate or article.

[0044] During use of the device, in particular when a user experience or usage session is to take place, the aerosol-generating device may be operated in the aerosol-releasing mode, whereas during a use pause of the device, that is, when no user experience or usage session is to take place and / or when a usage session is interrupted by a pause, the aerosol-generating device may be operated in the pause mode. During both, the aerosol-releasing mode and the pause mode of the aerosol-generating device, the heating element, a heating circuitry and / or a heating arrangement may be in operation, in particular in heating operation, yet at different temperature levels, namely, at a first temperature level during the aerosol-releasing mode, which may be chosen to be sufficiently high in order to generate an aerosol, and at a second temperature level below the first temperature level during the pause mode, which may be chosen to be sufficiently low in order to minimize depletion of the substrate, whilst avoiding degradation.

[0045] Depending on the type and composition of the specific aerosol-generating article or substrate to be used with the device, the first temperature level may be in a range between 250 degree Celsius and 450 degree Celsius, particularly between 270 degree Celsius and 430 degree Celsius, more particularly between 315 degree Celsius and 355 degree Celsius. These temperatures may be suitable operating or heating temperatures sufficient to allow volatile compounds to be released from the aerosol-generating article or substrate, for example during one or more usage sessions and / or when operating the device in the aerosol releasing mode. For example, the first temperature level and / or heating temperature for liquid aerosol-generating articles or substrates may be lower than the first temperature level for solid aerosol-generating articles or substrates.

[0046] In general, the second temperature level may be chosen to maintain a usability of the aerosol-generating article or substrate for a prolonged time. The second temperature level may also depend on the type and composition of the aerosol-generating article or substrate to be used with the device. Accordingly, the second temperature level may be in a range between 175 degree Celsius and 225 degree Celsius, particularly between 185 degree Celsius to 215 degree Celsius, more particularly between 195 degree Celsius and 205 degree Celsius. These temperatures may be sufficiently low in order to minimize depletion of the substrate during the pause mode but at the same time sufficiently high in order to avoid vapor to condensate in the device, which could lead to degradation of the aerosol-generating article or substrate.

[0047] In order to avoid condensation effects in the device, in particular to avoid condensation of substances in the aerosol-generating article or substrate, the second temperature level may be at least 150 degree Celsius, in particular at least 175 degree Celsius, preferably at least 185 degree Celsius, more preferably at least 195 degree Celsius.

[0048] Vice versa, in order to minimize depletion of the substrate or article during the pause mode the second temperature level may be at most 220 degree Celsius, in particular at most 225 degree Celsius, preferably at most 215 degree Celsius, more preferably at least 205 degree Celsius. In particular, the second temperature level may be chosen such as to reduce the formation of aerosols by at least 50 percent compared to the aerosol-releasing mode.

[0049] In relative terms, the second temperature level may be lower than the first temperature level, for example by at least 50 degree Celsius, in particular at least 75 degree Celsius, more particularly at least 100 degree Celsius.

[0050] The temperature values given above preferably may be average temperatures of the aerosol-generating article or substrate during operation of the device. In addition, as already mentioned, the temperature values may depend, inter alia, on the type and composition of the aerosol-generating article or substrate to be used with the device.

[0051] As used herein, the pause mode may refer to a first operational mode of aerosol-generating device, in which the heating element, the heating circuitry and / or a heating arrangement may be operated during an operation pause, that is, a use pause of the aerosol-generating device, that is, when a user experience or usage session is paused and aerosol generation may not take place, or at least may be reduced to a minimum level. That is, in the pause mode the aerosol-generating device is in a use pause.

[0052] Vice versa, the aerosol-releasing mode may refer to a second operational mode of the aerosol-generating device, which is the normal heating operational mode of the heating element, circuitry, and / or arrangement for aerosol generation, in which heating element, the heating circuitry and / or a heating arrangement may be operated during use of the device by a user, that is, when a user experience or usage session takes place, in particular when aerosol generation takes place. In general, aerosol generation may take place continuously or on demand, in particular on a puff basis, that is, on demand of a user when taking a puff.

[0053] From the explanations above, it follows that the aerosol-generating device uses electrical energy during the pause mode, for example for maintaining a specific temperature of the heating element. For this reason, the method may comprise determining the energy consumption of the pause mode. It may be provided that, when a pause mode is activated during a usage session, the energy consumption during the pause mode is discarded when determining the energy consumption of the usage session. In other words, only the energy consumption during aerosol generation, meaning during the active usage session, is considered as energy consumption of the usage session. This may be particularly useful for users who only seldomly use the pause mode and the exceptional use of the pause mode would therefore introduce an outlier into the statistics. On the other hand, there may be users who regularly use the pause mode. In this case, it may be useful to also consider the energy consumption of the pause mode when determining the estimated energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session. It may therefore be provided that, when a pause mode is activated during a usage session, the energy consumption during the pause mode is added to the energy consumption of the usage session when determining the energy consumption of the usage session. In other words, both the energy consumption of the parts of the usage session in which aerosol is provided to the user and the parts of the usage session covered by the pause mode are considered when determining the total energy consumption of the usage session.

[0054] Any of the data determined or collected during the method as described herein may be indicated or displayed to the user. For example, the method may comprise indicating the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device to a user, for example using an interface device, a display device, an indicator array, a loudspeaker, or a haptic feedback device. In the same way, any one or any combination of the estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session, the mean energy consumption per usage session, the standard deviation of the energy consumption, the energy consumption of each usage session and / or the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage may be indicated to the user.

[0055] The method may comprise allowing or prohibiting an additional usage session before recharging of the energy storage of the aerosol-generating device depending on the remaining number of usage sessions. To prevent the need to abort and already started usage session, starting a usage session may only be allowed when the number of remaining usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device is greater than or equal to 1. Conversely, starting a usage session may be prohibited when the number of remaining usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device is smaller than 1. When the start of an additional usage session is prohibited, the aerosol-generating device may need to be recharged before further usage sessions may be experienced. This may also be indicated to the user in any one of the ways as mentioned before.

[0056] The method according to the present disclosure may be performed by any one or a combination of the aerosol-generating device, a companion device configured to charge the aerosol-generating device with electrical energy, and a computing device, wherein the computing device may be a smartphone, a tablet computer, a personal computer or a server device. Any of the mentioned devices may be communicatively coupled or couplable with each other. In other words, there may be a data connection between any of the mentioned devices. The data connection may be configured to facilitate performing of the method as described herein.

[0142] For powering the at least one heating element 7 with electrical power, the aerosol-generating device 2 may further comprise the at least one energy storage 15, for example in the form of a battery, for storing electrical energy or power. In Figure 1, both the aerosol-generating device 2 and the companion device 3 each comprise an energy storage 15 and the energy storage 15 is electrically coupled to the respective device 2, 3. In particular, energy storage 15 may be removably couplable to the aerosol-generating device 2 and / or the companion device 3. In other words, energy storage 15 may be a replaceable energy storage or battery. The connection between the energy storage 15 and the devices 2, 3 may be configured so that the devices 2, 3 may be run by electrical energy provided by the energy storage 15. Additionally, the connection between the energy storage 15 and the aerosol-generating device 2 and / or the companion device 3 may be configured so that data may be transmitted between the processing circuitries of the aerosol-generating device 2 and / or the companion device 3 and the energy storage 15. At least one or both of the energy storages 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2 and the companion device 3 may comprise a fuel gauge 20. Fuel gauge 20 may be configured to provide a readout of data or parameters pertaining to the energy storage 15, for example its current SoC, the current energy storage capacity, the voltage supplied by the energy storage 15 or any other parameter related to charging and / or discharging of the energy storage 15.

[0143] The aerosol-generating device 2 may further comprise at least one electrical connector 12 for coupling to a corresponding at least one electrical connector 13 of the companion device 3 and / or an electrical connector of an external power supply (not shown) , e.g., a USB charger. For example, when the aerosol-generating device 2 is at least partially inserted into the opening 14 of the companion device 3, the one or more electrical connectors 12 of the aerosol-generating device 2 may be coupled with the one or more electrical connectors 13 of the companion device 3 to charge the at least one energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2.

[0144] The aerosol-generating device 2 may further comprise a communications arrangement 9 or communication circuitry 9 with one or more communications interfaces 10 for communicatively coupling the aerosol-generating device 2 with the companion device 3, for example, via an Internet connection, a wireless LAN connection, a WiFi connection, a Bluetooth connection, a mobile phone network, a mobile data connection for example but not limited to a 3G / 4G / 5G connection, an edge connection, an LTE connection, a BUS connection, a wireless connection, a wired connection, an optical data connection such as but not limited to IrDa, a radio connection, a near field connection, and / or an IoT connection.

[0145] The aerosol-generating device 2 may further comprise a data storage 11 or memory for storing information, program code or data. Data storage 11 may also store collected values of sensors and / or one or more mathematical functions or formulas, software and computer instructions that can be executed by the processing circuitry, particularly controller 5 and / or processor 6. One or more sensors 16 may be arranged on, at or in the aerosol-generating device 2 or the companion device 3 to collect data. One or more of the sensors 16 may for example be temperature sensors, strain sensors, accelerometers or any other suitable sensors.

[0146] The aerosol-generating device 2 may further comprise user interface components, for example comprising an input element or input device 8, for example in the form of a pushbutton or a capacitive button. The input device 8 may be used as a power button to activate or deactivate the heating element 7 or ultrasonic device for aerosol generation thereby to activate or deactivate the aerosol-generating device 2. Upon activation of the aerosol-generating device 2, the heating element 7 may be activated and heat may be applied to at least a part of the aerosol-generating article 17, such that aerosol can be generated for consumption or inhalation by the user, for example in a usage session. The aerosol generating device 2 and / or the companion device 3 may each comprise a user interface comprising one or more output elements, such as a display device 19 and / or one or more LEDs, for outputting a signal and / or displaying information to a user, or haptic and acoustic data output devices. The display device 19 may be, for example, a touchscreen and may therefore be configured as both an output and an input element.

[0147] The aerosol-generating system 1 may also comprise a separate computing device 18. The computing device 18 may, for example, be a smartphone, a tablet computer, personal computer, or a server, for example an Internet or web server. The computing device 18 may be communicatively couplable to the aerosol-generating device 2 and / or the companion device 3. In other words, a data connection may be established between the computing device 18 and at least one of the aerosol-generating device 2 and the companion device 3. The data connection may be established by any means mentioned herein or similarly suitable. The data connection may be used to read data from the aerosol-generating device 2, for example pertaining to the energy consumption per usage session or the number of usage sessions of which the energy consumption has been determined. Therefore, the data connection may facilitate performing the method as described herein at least partly by the computing device 18. The computing device 18 may also act as an input and / or output device and may, for instance, comprise a display device 19 for displaying information to a user. As mentioned before, display device 19 may be a touchscreen.

[0148] Figure 2 shows an idealized probability density function according to a normal distribution. As also in figures 3 and 4, the x-axis or horizontal axis shows the energy consumption per usage session denoted by ε. The y-axis or vertical axis shows the number of valid usage sessions M, meaning the number of usage sessions of which the energy consumption ε has been determined because the usage session was fully or substantially fully completed. On the x-axis, the mean value μ of the energy consumption ε as well as the values of the mean value μ plus or minus the standard deviation σ multiplied by a factor of 1, 2, and 3 is marked. As can be seen from the function visualized in figure 2, using only the mean value μ of the energy consumption ε to predict the energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session, there is a 50%chance that the energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session is underestimated. However, when the mean value μ of the energy consumption ε and the standard deviation σ are added together, there is an 84%chance that the energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session will not be more than this value. In other words, there is an 84%chance that the energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session is not underestimated, meaning that the estimated energy consumption is accurate.

[0149] Therefore, according to the present disclosure, the estimated energy consumption ε’ may be determined from the following formula (1) : ε′=μ+n·σ    (1)

[0150] In which:

[0151] ε’denotes the estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session, μ denotes the mean value of the energy consumption ε,

[0152] σ denotes the standard deviation, and

[0153] n denotes a factor, which may be an integer, for example 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.

[0154] As can also be seen from figure 2, when the factor n is greater than 1, the chance of underestimating the energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session further decreases. For example, when factor n equals 2, meaning that two times the standard deviation σ is added to the mean value μ of the energy consumption ε to determine the estimated energy consumption ε’ , there is a 97.6%chance that the resulting estimated energy consumption ε’ is at least as high as the energy consumption actually needed to fully complete the upcoming usage session. As a further example, when factor n equals 3, meaning that three times the standard deviation σ is added to the mean value μ of the energy consumption ε to determine the estimated energy consumption ε’ , there is a 99.7%chance that the resulting estimated energy consumption ε’ is at least as high as the energy consumption actually needed to fully complete the upcoming usage session. Therefore, by choosing a suitable value for factor n, a desired certainty of not underestimating the energy consumption of the at least one upcoming usage session may be adjusted.

[0155] In figure 3, a typical case is shown. The estimated energy consumption ε’ in this case is equal to the mean value μ of the energy consumption ε plus two times the standard deviation σ. The numerical value of the estimated energy consumption ε’ may be somewhere below the maximum energy consumption per usage session, εmax, which may be hard-coded in the aerosol-generating device 2, and which is exemplarily shown as 105 mAh in figure 3. However, any other value for the maximum energy consumption per usage session εmax may be used. As the estimated energy consumption ε’ is below the maximum energy consumption εmax, the estimation seems realistic and therefore the determined value of the estimated energy consumption ε’ may be further used, for example to determine the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device 2 before having to recharge the device.

[0156] A different case is shown in figure 4. In this case, the numerical value determined for the estimated energy consumption ε’ lies above the maximum energy consumption per usage session εmax, which is again exemplarily shown as 105 mAh in figure 4. As the estimated energy consumption ε’ is above the maximum energy consumption εmax, the estimation is too high. In this case, an amount of energy according to the estimated energy consumption ε’ may not be provided by the aerosol-generating device 2. Therefore, in this case, estimated energy consumption ε’ may be discarded and the value of the maximum energy consumption per usage session εmax may be further used, for example to determine the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device 2 before having to recharge the device.

[0157] The estimated energy consumption ε’ may also be used to determine the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device 2. For this purpose, the following formula (2) may be used: N=E / ε′   (2)

[0158] In which:

[0159] N denotes the estimated remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device before having to recharge the device,

[0160] E denotes the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2, and

[0161] ε’ denotes the estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session.

[0162] Formula (2) gives a realistic estimation of the remaining number of usage sessions N, taking into account the individual habits and preferences as well as external factors of an individual user. However, when the user uses up all of the remaining usage sessions except one, using formula (2) may result to the current energy storage capacity E of the energy storage 15 only covering a usage session using energy at most equal to the estimated energy consumption ε’ . In other words, when all but one of the estimated remaining number of usage sessions N are used up, there may only be enough energy left in the energy storage 15 to provide the user with a usage session that does not use more energy than the estimated energy consumption ε’ . However, a user may extend a usage session anytime up to the maximum energy consumption per usage session εmax. In the mentioned case, this extension may not work and may lead to an unsatisfactory abort of the usage session because the estimated energy consumption ε’ may be smaller than the maximum energy consumption εmax. To avoid this situation, the following formula (3) may be used to determine the remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device 2: N=1+ (E-εmax)  / ε′   (3)

[0163] In which:

[0164] N denotes the estimated remaining number of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device before having to recharge the device,

[0165] E denotes the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2,

[0166] εmax denotes the maximum energy consumption per usage session, and

[0167] ε’ denotes the estimated energy consumption of at least one upcoming usage session.

[0168] By using formula (3) to determine the remaining number of usage sessions N providable by the aerosol-generating device 2 before recharging, the energy remaining in the energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2 is always at least equal to the maximum energy consumption per usage session εmax.

[0169] As mentioned before, the energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2 and / or the companion device 3 may comprise a fuel gauge 20. In this case, the current energy storage capacity E of the energy storage 15 as well as the energy consumption of each usage session εmay be determined by reading respective values from the fuel gauge 20, for example directly at the start or beginning and at the end of a usage session.

[0170] However, in certain devices, no fuel gauge 20 may be available. These devices may, however, at least be configured to read and / or monitor the voltage provided by the energy storage 15.In these cases, the current energy storage capacity E of the energy storage 15 and / or the energy consumption ε of each usage session may be determined or estimated from the voltage of the energy storage 15. Figure 5 shows a graph displaying the linear relationship between the voltage V provided by the energy storage 15 and the time t during discharging the energy storage 15, for example, by using up energy during a usage session of the aerosol-generating device 2, or by using up energy by recharging the aerosol-generating device 2 by the companion device 3. As shown in figure 5, for example the energy consumption ε in a usage session may be measured by determining the voltage drop Vt at the energy storage 15 between the beginning and the end of the usage session. The voltage drop Vt at the energy storage 15 may be directly used as a value representing the energy consumption ε, or the energy consumption ε may be determined from the voltage drop Vt. However, determining these energy storage 15-related parameters from the voltage supplied by the energy storage 15 is merely an example. Other methods may also be used in case there is no fuel gauge 20 available.

[0171] Figure 6 shows an exemplary flowchart of the method 30 according to the present disclosure. The method 30 may begin in step 31 with determining the current energy storage capacity E of an energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2. As mentioned above, this parameter may be read from a fuel gauge 20 or may be otherwise obtained. The method 30 may then continue in step 32 by determining an energy consumption ε of each usage session of a plurality of usage sessions, for example based on a measurement of the energy consumption ε of the energy storage 15. The numerical value of this parameter may also be read from a fuel gauge 20, particularly a difference of readouts of a fuel gauge 20, or may be otherwise obtained. In step 33, method 30 may comprise determining a mean energy consumption μ per usage session from the plurality of usage sessions. This step comprises a calculation from the single values obtained previously. The calculation may be performed by any of the devices comprised in the aerosol-generating system 1, for example the aerosol-generating device 2, the companion device 3, and / or the computing device 18. This is also true for every other step, particularly the steps comprising a calculation, of the method 30. By having the companion device 3 and / or the computing device 18 performing these steps, limited computational power on the aerosol-generating device 2 may be mitigated. The next step 34 comprises determining a standard deviation σ of the energy consumption ε of the plurality of usage sessions. From the mean energy consumption per usage session μ and the standard deviation σ of the energy consumption ε of the plurality of usage sessions, an estimated energy consumption ε’ of at least one upcoming usage session is determined in step 35. For this step, for example formula (1) may be used. Finally, in step 36, the remaining number of usage sessions N providable by the aerosol-generating device 2 is determined from the estimated energy consumption ε’a nd the current energy storage capacity E. For this step, either formula (2) or formula (3) may be used.

[0172] Further optional steps of the method 30 are shown in dashed boxes. For example, method 30 may comprise step 37 of storing the energy consumption ε determined for each usage session in the data storage 11 or memory. The further optional step 38 comprises counting the usage sessions, particularly the number M of usage sessions of which the energy consumption ε has been determined. In other words, step 38 comprises counting the valid usage sessions which are then also considered in the further steps of method 30. In step 39, method 30 may comprise determining whether the usage sessions counted in step 38 is greater than a threshold. In other words, it may be determined whether the number M of usage sessions of which the energy consumption ε has been determined is greater than the threshold. The threshold is a predetermined value to make sure that the results of the estimation according to the present disclosure are statistically significant or at least significant enough for the purposes of method 30. Therefore, the threshold may be any suitable number and may, for example, be anywhere between 5 and 150. However, other values may also be possible. The further steps of method 30 may only be performed when it is determined that the number M of usage sessions of which the energy consumption ε has been determined is greater than the threshold. As long as this is not the case, further values of the energy consumption ε per usage session may be collected and the maximum energy consumption εmax per usage session may be used instead of the estimated energy consumption ε’ of at least one upcoming usage session, for example in determining the remaining number N of usage sessions providable by the aerosol-generating device 2 before having to be recharged.

[0173] By only using the estimation disclosed herein when the data pool is big enough, the accuracy of the estimation is increased. A further measure to increase accuracy lies in the optional step 40 of method 30, which may comprise determining the grade of depletion of the consumable used, for example the aerosol-generating substrate and / or article 17. The grade of depletion may, for example, be determined from a heating profile of the consumable during the usage session. It may be provided that only usage sessions in which the consumable has been fully or substantially depleted are then used in the statistics as described herein. In other words, only those usage sessions are counted as valid in which the consumable has been fully or substantially depleted. Other usage sessions, which may have had to be aborted, for example, may be ignored. This reduces noise in the data set.

[0174] After the remaining number of usage sessions N has been determined, the method 30 may comprise step 41, in which this result is indicated or presented to the user. In other words, method 30 may comprise indicating the remaining number of usage sessions N which may be provided by the aerosol-generating device 2 before having to recharge the device to the user. For example, the remaining number of usage sessions N may be displayed on display device 19. In this way, the user receives very accurate information about the performance of the aerosol-generating device 2 in consideration of the user’s own individual preferences and habits. The user also receives feedback pertaining to these habits and may even change their usage pattern, for example to increase the number of usage sessions per energy storage 15 charge.

[0175] Method 30 may also comprise using the determined parameters to directly adjust control of the aerosol-generating device 2. For example, in step 42, it may be determined whether or not another usage session is possible with the current or remaining energy storage capacity of the energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2. An additional usage session may then be allowed or prohibited depending on whether the current or remaining energy storage capacity of the energy storage 15 is enough for fully completing another usage session. This may also take into account that the user may at any time extend an already started usage session up to using the maximum possible energy consumption per usage session. In particular, starting another usage session may therefore only be allowed when the current energy storage capacity of the energy storage 15 of the aerosol-generating device 2 is greater than the maximum energy consumption εmax per usage session. Otherwise, starting another usage session may be prohibited.

[0176] For the purpose of the present description and of the appended claims, except where otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing amounts, quantities, percentages, and so forth, are to be understood as being modified in all instances by the term "about" . Also, all ranges include the maximum and minimum points disclosed and include any intermediate ranges therein, which may or may not be specifically enumerated herein. In this context, therefore, a number A is understood as A ± 10 %of A. Within this context, a number A may be considered to include numerical values that are within general standard error for the measurement of the property that the number A modifies. The number A, in some instances as used in the appended claims, may deviate by the percentages enumerated above provided that the amount by which A deviates does not materially affect the basic and novel characteristic (s) of the claimed invention. Also, all ranges include the maximum and minimum points disclosed and include any intermediate ranges therein, which may or may not be specifically enumerated herein.
