[0007] In a third aspect, a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium is proposed. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium stores instructions that cause a processor to perform a method in accordance with the first aspect of the present disclosure.

[0008] In a fourth aspect, another non-transitory computer-readable recording medium is proposed. The non-transitory computer-readable recording medium stores a bitstream of a video which is generated by a method performed by an apparatus for video processing. The method comprises: determining a candidate region of interest (ROI) within a current frame of the video based on a first ROI within a first frame of the video, the first frame preceding the current frame in a predetermined order; determining a set of motion vectors (MVs) of a set of blocks within the candidate ROI with respect to the first frame; determining a target ROI within the current frame based on the candidate ROI and the set of MVs; and generating the bitstream based on the target ROI.

[0009] In a fifth aspect, a method for storing a bitstream of a video is proposed. The method comprises: determining a candidate region of interest (ROI) within a current frame of the video based on a first ROI within a first frame of the video, the first frame preceding the current frame in a predetermined order; determining a set of motion vectors (MVs) of a set of blocks within the candidate ROI with respect to the first frame; determining a target ROI within the current frame based on the candidate ROI and the set of MVs; generating the bitstream based on the target ROI; and storing the bitstream in a non-transitory computer-readable recording medium.

[0030] The video source 112 may include a source such as a video capture device. Examples of the video capture device include, but are not limited to, an interface to receive video data from a video content provider, a computer graphics system for generating video data, and / or a combination thereof.

[0031] The video data may comprise one or more pictures. The video encoder 114 encodes the video data from the video source 112 to generate a bitstream. The bitstream may include a sequence of bits that form a coded representation of the video data. The bitstream may include coded pictures and associated data. The coded picture is a coded representation of a picture. The associated data may include sequence parameter sets, picture parameter sets, and other syntax structures. The I / O interface 116 may include a modulator / demodulator and / or a transmitter. The encoded video data may be transmitted directly to destination device 120 via the I / O interface 116 through the network 130A. The encoded video data may also be stored onto a storage medium / server 130B for access by destination device 120.

[0032] The destination device 120 may include an I / O interface 126, a video decoder 124, and a display device 122. The I / O interface 126 may include a receiver and / or a modem. The I / O interface 126 may acquire encoded video data from the source device 110 or the storage medium / server 130B. The video decoder 124 may decode the encoded video data. The display device 122 may display the decoded video data to a user. The display device 122 may be integrated with the destination device 120, or may be external to the destination device 120 which is configured to interface with an external display device.

[0033] The video encoder 114 and the video decoder 124 may operate according to a video compression standard, such as the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard and other current and / or further standards.

[0034] Fig. 2 is a block diagram illustrating an example of a video encoder 200, which may be an example of the video encoder 114 in the system 100 illustrated in Fig. 1, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0035] The video encoder 200 may be configured to implement any or all of the techniques of this disclosure. In the example of Fig. 2, the video encoder 200 includes a plurality of functional components. The techniques described in this disclosure may be shared among the various components of the video encoder 200. In some examples, a processor may be configured to perform any or all of the techniques described in this disclosure.

[0036] In some embodiments, the video encoder 200 may include a partition unit 201, a prediction unit 202 which may include a mode select unit 203, a motion estimation unit 204, a motion compensation unit 205 and an intra-prediction unit 206, a residual generation unit 207, a transform unit 208, a quantization unit 209, an inverse quantization unit 210, an inverse transform unit 211, a reconstruction unit 212, a buffer 213, and an entropy encoding unit 214.

[0037] In other examples, the video encoder 200 may include more, fewer, or different functional components. In an example, the prediction unit 202 may include an intra block copy (IBC) unit. The IBC unit may perform prediction in an IBC mode in which at least one reference picture is a picture where the current video block is located.

[0038] Furthermore, although some components, such as the motion estimation unit 204 and the motion compensation unit 205, may be integrated, but are represented in the example of Fig. 2 separately for purposes of explanation.

[0039] The partition unit 201 may partition a picture into one or more video blocks. The video encoder 200 and the video decoder 300 may support various video block sizes.

[0040] The mode select unit 203 may select one of the coding modes, intra or inter, e.g., based on error results, and provide the resulting intra-coded or inter-coded block to a residual generation unit 207 to generate residual block data and to a reconstruction unit 212 to reconstruct the encoded block for use as a reference picture. In some examples, the mode select unit 203 may select a combined inter and intra prediction (CIIP) mode in which the prediction is based on an inter prediction signal and an intra prediction signal. The mode select unit 203 may also select a resolution for a motion vector (e.g., a sub-pixel or integer pixel precision) for the block in the case of inter-prediction.

[0041] To perform inter prediction on a current video block, the motion estimation unit 204 may generate motion information for the current video block by comparing one or more reference frames from buffer 213 to the current video block. The motion compensation unit 205 may determine a predicted video block for the current video block based on the motion information and decoded samples of pictures from the buffer 213 other than the picture associated with the current video block.

[0042] The motion estimation unit 204 and the motion compensation unit 205 may perform different operations for a current video block, for example, depending on whether the current video block is in an I-slice, a P-slice, or a B-slice. As used herein, an “I-slice” may refer to a portion of a picture composed of macroblocks, all of which are based upon macroblocks within the same picture. Further, as used herein, in some aspects, “P-slices” and “B-slices” may refer to portions of a picture composed of macroblocks that are not dependent on macroblocks in the same picture.

[0043] In some examples, the motion estimation unit 204 may perform uni-directional prediction for the current video block, and the motion estimation unit 204 may search reference pictures of list 0 or list 1 for a reference video block for the current video block. The motion estimation unit 204 may then generate a reference index that indicates the reference picture in list 0 or list 1 that contains the reference video block and a motion vector that indicates a spatial displacement between the current video block and the reference video block. The motion estimation unit 204 may output the reference index, a prediction direction indicator, and the motion vector as the motion information of the current video block. The motion compensation unit 205 may generate the predicted video block of the current video block based on the reference video block indicated by the motion information of the current video block.

[0044] Alternatively, in other examples, the motion estimation unit 204 may perform bi-directional prediction for the current video block. The motion estimation unit 204 may search the reference pictures in list 0 for a reference video block for the current video block and may also search the reference pictures in list 1 for another reference video block for the current video block. The motion estimation unit 204 may then generate reference indexes that indicate the reference pictures in list 0 and list 1 containing the reference video blocks and motion vectors that indicate spatial displacements between the reference video blocks and the current video block. The motion estimation unit 204 may output the reference indexes and the motion vectors of the current video block as the motion information of the current video block. The motion compensation unit 205 may generate the predicted video block of the current video block based on the reference video blocks indicated by the motion information of the current video block.

[0045] In some examples, the motion estimation unit 204 may output a full set of motion information for decoding processing of a decoder. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the motion estimation unit 204 may signal the motion information of the current video block with reference to the motion information of another video block. For example, the motion estimation unit 204 may determine that the motion information of the current video block is sufficiently similar to the motion information of a neighboring video block.

[0046] In one example, the motion estimation unit 204 may indicate, in a syntax structure associated with the current video block, a value that indicates to the video decoder 300 that the current video block has the same motion information as the another video block.

[0047] In another example, the motion estimation unit 204 may identify, in a syntax structure associated with the current video block, another video block and a motion vector difference (MVD) . The motion vector difference indicates a difference between the motion vector of the current video block and the motion vector of the indicated video block. The video decoder 300 may use the motion vector of the indicated video block and the motion vector difference to determine the motion vector of the current video block.

[0048] As discussed above, video encoder 200 may predictively signal the motion vector. Two examples of predictive signaling techniques that may be implemented by video encoder 200 include advanced motion vector prediction (AMVP) and merge mode signaling.

[0049] The intra prediction unit 206 may perform intra prediction on the current video block. When the intra prediction unit 206 performs intra prediction on the current video block, the intra prediction unit 206 may generate prediction data for the current video block based on decoded samples of other video blocks in the same picture. The prediction data for the current video block may include a predicted video block and various syntax elements.

[0050] The residual generation unit 207 may generate residual data for the current video block by subtracting (e.g., indicated by the minus sign) the predicted video block (s) of the current video block from the current video block. The residual data of the current video block may include residual video blocks that correspond to different sample components of the samples in the current video block.

[0051] In other examples, there may be no residual data for the current video block, for example in a skip mode, and the residual generation unit 207 may not perform the subtracting operation.

[0052] The transform unit 208 may generate one or more transform coefficient video blocks for the current video block by applying one or more transforms to a residual video block associated with the current video block.

[0053] After the transform unit 208 generates a transform coefficient video block associated with the current video block, the quantization unit 209 may quantize the transform coefficient video block associated with the current video block based on one or more quantization parameter (QP) values associated with the current video block.

[0054] The inverse quantization unit 210 and the inverse transform unit 211 may apply inverse quantization and inverse transforms to the transform coefficient video block, respectively, to reconstruct a residual video block from the transform coefficient video block. The reconstruction unit 212 may add the reconstructed residual video block to corresponding samples from one or more predicted video blocks generated by the prediction unit 202 to produce a reconstructed video block associated with the current video block for storage in the buffer 213.

[0055] After the reconstruction unit 212 reconstructs the video block, loop filtering operation may be performed to reduce video blocking artifacts in the video block.

[0056] The entropy encoding unit 214 may receive data from other functional components of the video encoder 200. When the entropy encoding unit 214 receives the data, the entropy encoding unit 214 may perform one or more entropy encoding operations to generate entropy encoded data and output a bitstream that includes the entropy encoded data.

[0057] Fig. 3 is a block diagram illustrating an example of a video decoder 300, which may be an example of the video decoder 124 in the system 100 illustrated in Fig. 1, in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0058] The video decoder 300 may be configured to perform any or all of the techniques of this disclosure. In the example of Fig. 3, the video decoder 300 includes a plurality of functional components. The techniques described in this disclosure may be shared among the various components of the video decoder 300. In some examples, a processor may be configured to perform any or all of the techniques described in this disclosure.

[0059] In the example of Fig. 3, the video decoder 300 includes an entropy decoding unit 301, a motion compensation unit 302, an intra prediction unit 303, an inverse quantization unit 304, an inverse transform unit 305, a reconstruction unit 306 and a buffer 307. The video decoder 300 may, in some examples, perform a decoding pass generally reciprocal to the encoding pass described with respect to video encoder 200.

[0060] The entropy decoding unit 301 may retrieve an encoded bitstream. The encoded bitstream may include entropy coded video data (e.g., encoded blocks of video data) . The entropy decoding unit 301 may decode the entropy coded video data, and from the entropy decoded video data, the motion compensation unit 302 may determine motion information including motion vectors, motion vector precision, reference picture list indexes, and other motion information. The motion compensation unit 302 may, for example, determine such information by performing the AMVP and merge mode. AMVP is used, including derivation of several most probable candidates based on data from adjacent PBs and the reference picture. Motion information typically includes the horizontal and vertical motion vector displacement values, one or two reference picture indices, and, in the case of prediction regions in B slices, an identification of which reference picture list is associated with each index. As used herein, in some aspects, a “merge mode” may refer to deriving the motion information from spatially or temporally neighboring blocks.

[0061] The motion compensation unit 302 may produce motion compensated blocks, possibly performing interpolation based on interpolation filters. Identifiers for interpolation filters to be used with sub-pixel precision may be included in the syntax elements.

[0062] The motion compensation unit 302 may use the interpolation filters as used by the video encoder 200 during encoding of the video block to calculate interpolated values for sub-integer pixels of a reference block. The motion compensation unit 302 may determine the interpolation filters used by the video encoder 200 according to the received syntax information and use the interpolation filters to produce predictive blocks.

[0063] The motion compensation unit 302 may use at least part of the syntax information to determine sizes of blocks used to encode frame (s) and / or slice (s) of the encoded video sequence, partition information that describes how each macroblock of a picture of the encoded video sequence is partitioned, modes indicating how each partition is encoded, one or more reference frames (and reference frame lists) for each inter-encoded block, and other information to decode the encoded video sequence. As used herein, in some aspects, a “slice” may refer to a data structure that can be decoded independently from other slices of the same picture, in terms of entropy coding, signal prediction, and residual signal reconstruction. A slice can either be an entire picture or a region of a picture.

[0064] The intra prediction unit 303 may use intra prediction modes for example received in the bitstream to form a prediction block from spatially adjacent blocks. The inverse quantization unit 304 inverse quantizes, i.e., de-quantizes, the quantized video block coefficients provided in the bitstream and decoded by entropy decoding unit 301. The inverse transform unit 305 applies an inverse transform.

[0065] The reconstruction unit 306 may obtain the decoded blocks, e.g., by summing the residual blocks with the corresponding prediction blocks generated by the motion compensation unit 302 or intra-prediction unit 303. If desired, a deblocking filter may also be applied to filter the decoded blocks in order to remove blockiness artifacts. The decoded video blocks are then stored in the buffer 307, which provides reference blocks for subsequent motion compensation / intra prediction and also produces decoded video for presentation on a display device.

[0066] Some example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detailed hereinafter. It should be understood that section headings are used in the present document to facilitate ease of understanding and do not limit the embodiments disclosed in a section to only that section. Furthermore, while certain embodiments are described with reference to Versatile Video Coding or other specific video codecs, the disclosed techniques are applicable to other video coding technologies also. Furthermore, while some embodiments describe video coding steps in detail, it will be understood that corresponding steps decoding that undo the coding will be implemented by a decoder. Furthermore, the term video processing encompasses video coding or compression, video decoding or decompression and video transcoding in which video pixels are represented from one compressed format into another compressed format or at a different compressed bitrate. 1. Brief Summary

[0067] The present disclosure is related to video encoding technologies. Specifically, it is related to the region of interest (ROI) optimizations in video encoding. It may be applied to existing video encoders, such as x264, x265, HEVC test Model (HM) , Fraunhofer Versatile Video Encoder (VVenC) , VVC reference software VTM and others. It may also be applicable to future video coding encoders or video codecs. 2. Introduction 2.1 High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard

[0068] Fig. 4 illustrates an overview of HEVC technique. Fig. 4 depicts the block diagram of a hybrid video encoder, including block partitions that split the video picture into CTUs. For each CTU, it is divided into several blocks, called coding units, using quad-tree and binary tree structures. For each coding unit, block-based intra or inter prediction is performed, and the resulting residues are transformed and quantized. Finally, Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) entropy coding is employed for bitstream generation. 2.2 Motion estimation in HEVC / H. 265

[0069] There is a very high correlation between adjacent video frames. In order to reduce redundancy and improve coding efficiency, motion estimation is used in video coding to align pixels between frames, so that only the residual between frames needs to be encoded. The "Motion Estimation" module in Fig. 4 is motion search. For the coding block in the current frame, find the most similar block in the reference frame by calculating the sum of absolute difference (SAD) or sum of absolute transformed difference (SATD) between the current block and the reference block. The most similar block is the reference block, and the difference in spatial position relative to the current block is referred as the motion vector (MV) . The MV can be represented in different precision, such as full pixel, half-pixel, quarter-pixel, and 1 / 16-pixel. Through MV, the reference block can be spatially aligned to the current block, thereby obtaining a smaller residual. This MV information can also be used for object tracking among continuous frames. 2.3 ROI coding

[0070] ROI refers to the region within a video frame that attracts people’s attentions. The determination of ROI is usually based on the characteristics of the video content. For example, when watching videos, people may pay more attention to human faces; in traffic monitoring, people focus on road areas and cars. Fig. 5 shows one example of ROI. ROI can be obtained through computer vision method such as saliency detection or machine learning based method. In general, machine learning based methods are more accurate, but the computational complexity will be much higher. In video coding, we may pay more attention to the quality of ROI, thereby obtaining better visual quality and bit rate savings.

[0071] For example, the quantization parameters (QP) of ROI and non-ROI may be different in video coding due to different importance. The QP of ROI is smaller than the QP of non-ROI. So that, the bitrate saved from non-ROI can be used to enhance the quality of ROI while keeping the similar bitrate. In addition, different encoding strategies can be used for ROI and non-ROI. The ROI can use coding modes that have better quality, while the non-ROI can use a faster mode or a mode with a lower bit rate. The pixel processing methods are also different for ROI and non-ROI. The processing of ROI can emphasize subjective quality, while processing of Non-ROI can address reducing the bit rate. 3. Problems

[0072] The ROI in video coding has following problems: 1) For the accuracy of ROI, the detection of ROI usually requires powerful computation resource and has high  complexity. If ROI detection is performed on every frame of videos, it will consume a lot of computation. One solution is to only detect some frames at certain intervals, and the ROI of non-detection frames are obtained by coping ROI information from the closest detected frame. The problem is that the ROI position may be inaccurate for those non-detection frames. 2) In video coding, different blocks in the frame can use different QPs, so smaller QPs can be used for important  areas to obtain better quality. In video coding with ROI, the QP of each block is QPOrg+RoiQpOffset or QPOrg+NonRoiQpOffset. QPOrg is the QP obtained by the rate control algorithm, RoiQpOffset is the QP offset allocated for ROI, and NonRoiQpOffset is the QP offset allocated for Non-ROI. The current practice is that ROI and Non-ROI allocate their own RoiQpOffset and NonRoiQpOffset, but RoiQpOffset and NonRoiQpOffset are same in inner of ROI and Non-Roi, which limits bitrate savings and subjective quality enhancement. 3) For ROI and Non-ROI, the current common practice is to adjust QP, but the subjective quality improvement  is not outstanding enough. 4. Detailed Solutions

[0073] To solve the above problems and some other problems not mentioned, methods as summarized below are disclosed. These solutions should be considered as examples to explain the general concepts and should not be interpreted in a narrow way. Furthermore, these solutions can be applied individually or combined in any manner.Tracking of ROI and revising of ROI

[0074] In order to make the ROI of non-detection frames more accurate, motion-based tracking method can be used to relocate the ROI of detection frames to non-detection frames, and revise (reduce and increase) the ROI of non-detection frames adaptively. The following introduces the method of only one ROI in a video frame first, and then introduces the method of multiple ROIs (multi-ROIs) . The examples of one ROI and multi-ROIs are shown in Figs. 6A and 6B, respectively. 1. One-ROI a. Relocate the ROI by MV, which includes six steps: i. Obtain MVs of ROI from the previous frame to the current frame, statistics MVs and  obtain the histograms of the horizontal and vertical components of MVs, recorded as MV_X_all and MV_Y_all, respectively. During MVs statistics, MVs larger than the pre-set threshold will not be included in the statistics. ii. Use the function findMaxIndex () to find the index in MV_X_all that best represents  this histogram, and determine whether the number of MVs corresponding to the index is greater than the preset threshold. If it is greater than the threshold, move the ROI horizontally with the motion indicated by the index. The vertical movement of ROI is derived in the same way through MV_Y_all. iii. The findMaxIndex () function is used to find the index with the largest proportion of  three adjacent indexes in the histogram, and then find the index with the largest pro-portion among these three indices. In the example shown in Fig. 7, findMaxIndex () will select 5, which is more representative of the histogram. iv. For the ROI that is relocated out of the frame boundary, truncate it so that it can only  move inside the frame boundary. v. Calculate the intra-frame cost intraCost and inter-frame cost interCost of the ROI.  If interCost is significantly greater than intraCost, it indicates that the ROI may dis-appear in the current frame. Then modify ROI to Non-ROI based on the intraCost and interCost of each position of ROI. vi. Statistics the pixels and other information of ROI, indicated as InfoRoi, and statistics  the pixels and other information that are adjacent to ROI but belong to Non-ROI, in-dicated as InfoNonRoiNeig. If InfoRoi and InfoNonRoiNeig are similar, change this part from Non-ROI to ROI. 2. Multi-ROIs a. Move each ROI independently according to the method of one-ROI described above. b. Move all ROIs together and then refine, which includes the following four steps: i. Treat multiple ROIs as a whole and use one-ROI method described above to locate all  ROIs for non-detection frames. ii. Statistics of the histograms of the horizontal and vertical components of MVs of one  ROI, recorded as MV_X_one and MV_Y_one respectively. iii. Find the index that best represents MV_X_one through the function findMaxIndex () ,  recorded as MV_X_best. If the number of MV corresponding to MV_X_best in MV_X_one is greater than the preset threshold, MV_X_best is considered valid. Then determine whether the MV on the left side of the ROI is significantly different from MV_X_best. If so, move the ROI to the right until the MV on the left side of the ROI is no longer far from MV_X_best. If the ROI does not move to the right, determine whether the MV on the right side of the ROI is significantly different from MV_X_best. If so, move the ROI to the left until the MV on the right side of the ROI is no longer significantly different from MV_X_best. Use MV_Y_one to move ROI up and down in a similar way. iv. Perform steps (ii) and (iii) for all ROIs one by one.Tune QP based on distance and correlation 3. Adaptively adjust the NonRoiQpOffset and RoiQpOffsets within Non-ROI and ROI, respectively,  to achieve better subjective quality and bit rate savings. a. Adaptively adjust QP according to distance and correlation. This method consists of five steps: i. Assign RoiQpOffset and NonRoiQpOffset to ROI and Non-ROI, where  NonRoiQpOffset > RoiQpOffset ii. Calculate the distance from the Non-ROI pixel P to the nearest ROI pixel Q, recorded  as Distance (P, Q) = |Xp-Xq| + |Yp-Yq|, where X and Y are the horizontal and vertical coordinates. As shown in Fig. 8, the distance of A is the difference between the abscissa, the distance of B is the difference between the ordinates, and the distance of C is the sum of the differences of abscissa and ordinates. More specifically, the distance of A is x1, the distance of B is x2, and the distance of C is x2+y2. iii. For 0<Distance < threshold , QpOffsetNew = (RoiQpOffset +  NonRoiQpOffset )  / 2; For Distance≥ threshold, NewNonRoiQpOffset=NonRoiQpOffset+ a * (Distance-threshold) . iv. Obtain the strength of subsequent frames referring to the current frame through pre- analysis, and indicate it as propagateCost. If propagateCost is smaller than a pre-defined threshold, increase RoiQpOffset v. For vertical video, if a block is in the upper or lower part of the frame and is Non-ROI,  increase its NonRoiQpOffset. For example, if a block is in the upper 10%or lower 20%of the frame and is Non-ROI, then NonRoiQpOffset + 3.Adaptively sharpen ROI and blur Non-Roi 4. Adaptively sharpen ROI and blur Non-ROI. a. For the ROI, perform adaptive edge sharpening. The sharpening strength is evaluated with QP.  The larger the QP, the smaller the sharpening strength. For example, strengthnew=max (strengthmin, strengthold–a×QP) , where strengthmin is the minimal strength. b. For the ROI, perform adaptive edge sharpening. The sharpening strength is evaluated with  propagateCost, which is the strength of subsequent frames referring to the current frame. For example, strength_new = strength_old + a×propagateCost. c. For the ROI, divide it into blocks of NxN, and adaptively adjust the sharpening strength of each  block. Calculate the gradient of each pixel in the block. One calculation method is abs (P (x, y) -P (x-1, y) ) + abs (P (x, y) -P (x, y-1 ) ) , where P (x, y) is the pixel value at position (x, y) . The proportion of pixels whose gradient is greater than the threshold LowTr and greater than the threshold HighTr are recorded as RatioLow and RatioHigh, re-spectively. If ratioLow>threshold Thr1 or ratioHigh > threshold Thr2 or ratioHigh < threshold Thr3, no sharpening is performed; otherwise sharpening is per-formed accordingly. If sharpening, the sharpening strength is inversely proportional to ratioLow. For example, strength_new= strength_old * (1- ratioLow) . d. For the ROI, perform adaptive edge sharpening by MV. Calculate the MV between the ROI  with the reference frame. If the MV is less than the threshold Thr, no sharpening is per-formed. e. For the ROI, perform adaptive edge sharpening by pixel difference. Calculate the difference  between the current pixel and surrounding pixels. If the difference is less than threshold Thr, no sharpening is performed. f. Perform asymmetric clipping on the sharpened pixel values, setting smaller upper bound and  larger lower bound. Given x is the original pixel value, y is the sharpened pixel value, and y’ is the clipped pixel value after sharpening, then y’ can be clipped as y’ = clip3 (x -LB, x + UB, y) , where LB and UB are lower bound and upper bound, respectively. UB may be smaller than LB. The function clip3 (x-LB, x+UB, y) is defined as follows. For example, UB is 5 and LB is 50, respectively. If the sharpened pixel value is greater  than the original pixel value plus 5, then the sharpened pixel is set to the original pixel value plus 5. If the sharpened pixel value is less than the original pixel value minus 50, the sharpened pixel value is set to the original pixel value minus 50. g. For the ROI, perform adaptive edge sharpening according to the ratio of the ROI area. Given  ROISizeRatio as the ratio of ROI area over the whole frame area, when ROISizeRatio is rel-atively large, reduce the sharpening strength. For example, if ROISizeRatio is greater than 0.5, strength_new= strength_old * (0.5 / ROISizeRatio) . h. For the ROI, perform adaptive edge sharpening according to the semantic information of the  ROI. If the ROI is an object identified by a predefined set, such as human face, the sharpening intensity is high; if the ROI is other irregular textures and not identified by a predefined set, the sharpening intensity is low or sharpening is skipped. i. For the ROI, perform adaptive edge sharpening according to quality of the input video. If the  input video has high noise intensity and contains compression distortion, reduce the sharpening intensity to avoid the noise or artifacts from being enhanced. j. For the Non-ROI, perform adaptive blurring, blurring strength can be evaluated with the func- tion f (QP, Grad, Distance) , QP, Grad, Distance are the QP of the current block, gradient of the current block and distance from the ROI of the current block, respectively. For example, f (QP, Grad, Distance) =a× QP+b× Grad+ c× Distance.General Aspects 5. The above bullets could be applied to any scenarios, not limited to one scenario. 6. The above bullets could be applied to rate control module.

[0075] More details of the embodiments of the present disclosure will be described below which are related to ROI-based video coding. The embodiments of the present disclosure should be considered as examples to explain the general concepts and should not be interpreted in a narrow way. Furthermore, these embodiments can be applied individually or combined in any manner.

[0076] As used herein, the term “block” may represent a coding tree block (CTB) , a coding tree unit (CTU) , a coding block (CB) , a coding unit (CU) , a prediction unit (PU) , a transform unit (TU) , a prediction block (PB) , a transform block (TB) , a subblock, a tile, a slice, a subpicture, a video processing unit comprising multiple samples / pixels, and / or the like. A block may be rectangular or non-rectangular. Moreover, the term “frame” may be a picture of the video.

[0077] Fig. 9 illustrates a flowchart of a method 900 for video processing in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 900 may be implemented during a conversion between a current frame of a video and a bitstream of the video. As shown in Fig. 9, the method 900 starts at 902 where a candidate region of interest (ROI) within the current frame is determined based on a first ROI within a first frame of the video. The first frame precedes the current frame in a predetermined order, such as a presentation order, a coding order, or the like.

[0078] In some embodiments, the candidate ROI may be determined based on a position and a size of the first ROI within the first frame. For example, a region with the same size and at the same position within the current frame may be determined to be the candidate ROI. It should be understood that the above example is described merely for purpose of description. The scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this respect.

[0079] At 904, a set of motion vectors (MVs) of a set of blocks within the candidate ROI with respect to the first frame is determined. In one example embodiment, the set of blocks may be all blocks within the candidate ROI. In another example, the set of blocks may be a part of blocks within the candidate ROI.

[0080] At 906, a target ROI within the current frame is determined based on the candidate ROI and the set of MVs. In some embodiments, a target displacement for the candidate ROI may be determined based on the set of MVs, the candidate ROI may be relocated based on the target displacement, and the target ROI may be determined based on the relocated candidate ROI. This will be described in detail below.

[0081] At 908, the conversion is performed based on the target ROI. In some embodiments, the conversion may include encoding the current frame into the bitstream. Alternatively or additionally, the conversion may include decoding the current frame from the bitstream. It should be understood that the above illustrations and / or examples are described merely for purpose of description. The scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this respect.

[0082] In view of the above, an ROI within the current frame is determined based on an ROI within a previous frame and MVs with respect to the previous frame. Compared with the conventional solution, the proposed method can advantageously determine a ROI withing a frame without performing computation intensive ROI detection and improve an accuracy of the determined ROI. Thereby, the coding quality can be improved.

[0083] In some embodiments, the target displacement for the candidate ROI may comprise a horizontal displacement component. In this case, a histogram of horizontal MV components of the set of MVs may be determined. In one example embodiment, if a MV is larger than a threshold, a horizontal MV component of the MV may be not included in the histogram. Fig. 7 illustrates an example histogram of horizontal MV components, where the horizontal axis displays groups that the horizontal MV components are sorted into, and the vertical axis displays the number of elements in a group. In the example shown in Fig. 7, there are 10 groups with index ranging from -1 to 8. In this case, the group index also indicates the direction and the magnitude of horizontal MV components in the corresponding group. For example, each horizontal MV component in the group with index -1 has a magnitude of 1 and directs to right, while each horizontal MV component in the group with index 5 has a magnitude of 5 and directs to left. It should be understood that the possible implementation of the histogram described here are merely illustrative and therefore should not be construed as limiting the present disclosure in any way.

[0084] Moreover, a target horizontal MV component may be determined based on the histogram, as the horizontal displacement component. For example, a candidate horizontal MV component may be determined from the horizontal MV components based on the number of each group of horizontal MV components in the histogram. By way of example rather than limitation, in order to determine the candidate horizontal MV component, the following may be performed for each group of horizontal MV components in the histogram: determining, as a representative metric value for the group of horizontal MV components, a total number of horizontal MV components among the group of horizontal MV components and at least one group of horizontal MV components adjacent to the group of horizontal MV components in the histogram. In addition, a horizontal MV component corresponding to a group of horizontal MV components with the largest representative metric value is determined as the candidate horizontal MV component.

[0085] For example, the at least one adjacent group may comprise a left adjacent group and a right adjacent group. In this case, wither reference to Fig. 7, the total number of horizontal MV components among the groups with indexes 4, 5, 6 is larger than the total number of horizontal MV components among the groups with indexes -1, 0, 1, and thus the group with index 5 has the largest representative metric value and thus a horizontal MV component corresponding to the group with index 5 can best represent the histogram. As such, the horizontal MV component corresponding to the group with index 5 may be determined as the candidate horizontal MV component.

[0086] If the number of MVs corresponding to the candidate horizontal MV components is larger than a threshold, the candidate horizontal MV component may be determined as the target horizontal MV component. Additionally, if the number of MVs corresponding to the candidate horizontal MV components is smaller than or equal to the threshold, the target horizontal MV component may be determined to be a predetermined value, such as 0 or the like.

[0087] In some embodiments, the target displacement may further comprise a vertical displacement component, and the vertical displacement component may be determined in a same manner as the horizontal displacement component. Thus, the determination of the vertical displacement component is not descried in detail here.

[0088] After obtaining the horizontal displacement component and the vertical displacement component, the candidate ROI may be moved (i.e., relocated) according to the horizontal and the vertical displacement components. In some embodiments, if a part of the relocated candidate ROI is outside of a boundary of the current frame, the relocated candidate ROI may be updated by removing the part from the relocated candidate ROI. Thereby, it is ensured that the finally obtained ROI will not extend outside the boundaries of the current frame.

[0089] In some embodiments, in order to determine the target ROI, an intra-frame rate-distortion (RD) cost of a block within the relocated candidate ROI and an inter-frame RD cost of the block with respect to the first frame may be determined. If the intra-frame RD cost is greater than the inter-frame RD cost and a ratio of the intra-frame RD cost to the inter-frame RD cost meets a predetermined condition, the relocated candidate ROI may be updated by removing the block from the relocated candidate ROI. By way of example rather than limitation, the predetermined condition is that the ratio of the intra-frame RD cost to the inter-frame RD cost is larger than a predetermined value, such as 1.5, 2 or the like. Thereby, the relocated candidate ROI can be refined, so as to improve the accuracy of the finally obtained target ROI.

[0090] In some embodiments, in order to determine the target ROI, a content metric value of a first block within the relocated candidate ROI and a content metric value of a second block adjacent to the first block and outside of the relocated candidate ROI may be determined based on pixel values, color, texture, and / or the like. If a difference between the content metric value of the first block and the content metric value of the second block is smaller than a threshold, the relocated candidate ROI may be updated by adding the second block into the relocated candidate ROI. Thereby, the relocated candidate ROI can be refined, so as to improve the accuracy of the finally obtained target ROI.

[0091] In some embodiments, the first frame may comprise at least one further ROI other than the first ROI, and a corresponding target ROI within the current frame may be determined for each of the at least one further ROI in a same manner as the first ROI. Thereby, a plurality of ROIs within the first frame may be inherited by the current frame.

[0092] In some embodiments, the first ROI may be determined by treating a plurality of ROIs in the first frame as a whole. In this case, the target ROI may comprise a plurality of subregions, and each of the plurality of subregions corresponds to one of the plurality of ROIs in the first frame. The target ROI may be updated by refining the target ROI based on the plurality of subregions.

[0093] Taking a first subregion among the plurality of subregions as an example, a histogram of horizontal MV components of a set of blocks within the first subregion with respect to the first frame may be determined. A reference horizontal MV component may be determined based on a horizontal MV component with the largest representative metric value in the histogram of horizontal MV components. The representative metric value may be determined in a similar manner as described above wither reference to Fig. 7. In addition, the first subregion may be relocated in a horizontal direction based on the reference horizontal MV component.

[0094] For example, if the reference horizontal MV component is different from a first horizontal MV component at a left side of the first subregion and a ratio of the first horizontal MV component to the reference horizontal MV component meets a first condition, the first subregion may be moved to right until a ratio of a horizontal MV component at a left side of the moved first subregion to the reference horizontal MV component does not meet the first condition. By way of example, the first condition may be the ratio being larger than a predetermined value, such as 1.5, 2 or the like.

[0095] If the reference horizontal MV component is the same as the first horizontal MV component or the ratio of the first horizontal MV component to the reference horizontal MV component does not meet the first condition, it is further determined whether the reference horizontal MV component is different from a second horizontal MV component at a right side of the first subregion and whether a ratio of the second horizontal MV component to the reference horizontal MV component meets a second condition. By way of example, the second condition may be the ratio being larger than a predetermined value, such as 1.5, 2 or the like.

[0096] If the reference horizontal MV component is different from the second horizontal MV component and the ratio of the second horizontal MV component to the reference horizontal MV component meets the second condition, the first subregion may be moved to left until a ratio of a horizontal MV component at a right side of the moved first subregion to the reference horizontal MV component does not meet the second condition. Thereby, the horizontal position of the first subregion can be refined, and thus the accuracy of the finally obtained ROI can be improved.

[0097] In some additional embodiments, a histogram of vertical MV components of the set of blocks within the first subregion with respect to the first frame may be determined. A reference vertical MV component may be determined based on a vertical MV component with the largest representative metric value in the histogram of vertical MV components. The representative metric value may be determined in a similar manner as described above wither reference to Fig. 7. In addition, the first subregion may be relocated in a vertical direction based on the reference vertical MV component.

[0098] For example, if the reference vertical MV component is different from a first vertical MV component at a top side of the first subregion and a ratio of the first vertical MV component to the reference vertical MV component meets a third condition, the first subregion may be moved to bottom until a ratio of a vertical MV component at a top side of the moved first subregion to the reference vertical MV component does not meet the third condition. By way of example, the third condition may be the ratio being larger than a predetermined value, such as 1.5, 2 or the like.

[0099] If the reference vertical MV component is the same as the first vertical MV component or the ratio of the first vertical MV component to the reference vertical MV component does not meet the third condition, it is further determined whether the reference vertical MV component is different from a second vertical MV component at a bottom side of the first subregion and whether a ratio of the second vertical MV component to the reference vertical MV component meets a fourth condition. By way of example, the fourth condition may be the ratio being larger than a predetermined value, such as 1.5, 2 or the like.

[0100] If the reference vertical MV component is different from the second vertical MV component and the ratio of the second vertical MV component to the reference vertical MV component meets the fourth condition, the first subregion may be moved to top until a ratio of a vertical MV component at a bottom side of the moved first subregion to the reference vertical MV component does not meet the fourth condition. Thereby, the vertical position of the first subregion can be refined, and thus the accuracy of the finally obtained ROI can be improved.

[0101] In some embodiments, the plurality of subregions may further comprise at least one further subregion other than the first subregion, and each of the at least one further subregion may be relocated in a same manner as the first subregion.

[0102] In some embodiments, the current frame may comprise a first pixel outside of the target ROI. In order to perform the conversion, a distance metric value of the first pixel to a nearest pixel within the target ROI may be determined. In one example embodiment, the distance metric value may be determined as a sum of a horizontal distance and a vertical distance between the first pixel and the nearest pixel. Taking the pixel C shown in Fig. 8 as an example, the distance metric value of the pixel C may be determined as a sum x2 and y2. In another example embodiment, the distance metric value may be determined according to a Euclidean distance. It should be understood that the possible implementations of the distance metric described here are merely illustrative and therefore should not be construed as limiting the present disclosure in any way.

[0103] Moreover, a first predetermined quantization parameter (QP) offset for the first pixel may be adjusted based on the distance metric value. For example, if the distance metric value is smaller than a distance threshold, the adjusted first predetermined QP offset may be determined based on an average of the first predetermined QP offset and a second predetermined quantization parameter (QP) offset for the target ROI. If the distance metric value is larger than or equal to the distance threshold, the adjusted first predetermined QP offset may be determined based on a weighted sum of the first predetermined QP offset and a difference between the distance metric value and the distance threshold. In one example embodiment, the first predetermined QP offset may correspond to the above-mentioned parameter NonRoiQpOffset, and the second predetermined QP offset may correspond to the above-mentioned parameter RoiQpOffset.

[0104] In some embodiments, at 908, a propagate cost for the current frame may be determined based on a correlation strength between the current frame and at least one frame referring to the current frame as a reference frame. For example, the correlation strength may be determined based on rate-distortion (RD) cost, a CUtree scheme or the like. If the propagate cost is smaller than a threshold, a second predetermined QP offset for the target ROI may be increased.

[0105] In some embodiments, at 908, if all of the following conditions are met, a first predetermined QP offset for a third block within the current frame is increased: the video is a vertical video, a center of the third block is located within a predetermined upper part of the current frame or a predetermined lower part of the current frame, and the third block is outside of the target ROI. For example, the predetermined upper part may be the upper 10%part, the upper 15%part, or the like. Additionally, the predetermined lower part may be the lower 10%part, the lower15%part, or the like.

[0106] In one example embodiment, if a height of the video is larger than a width of the video and a ratio of height to the width is larger than a predetermined value (such as 1.2, 1.5 or the like) , the video may be determined to be a vertical video. It should be understood that the above examples are described merely for purpose of description. The scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this respect.

[0107] Thereby, the QP can be determined for pixels within an ROI and pixels outside of the ROI in a more refined manner, and thus the coding efficiency can be improved.

[0108] In some embodiments, at 908, respective sharpening strengths for pixels within the target ROI may be determined based on a predetermined sharpening strength for the target POI, and edge sharpening may be performed on the target ROI based on the respective sharpening strengths.

[0109] In one example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, the predetermined sharpening strength may be adjusted based on a QP of the target ROI. For example, the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength may be negatively correlated with the QP. By way of example rather than limitation, the predetermined sharpening strength may be adjusted as follows: strengthnew=max (strengthmin, strengthold–a×QP) , where strengthnew represents the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength, strengthmin represents  the allowed minimal sharpening strength, strengthold represents the original sharpening strength, and a represents a positive number. It should be understood that the above example is described merely for purpose of description. The scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this respect.

[0110] In a further example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, a propagate cost for the current frame may be determined based on a correlation strength between the current frame and at least one frame referring to the current frame as a reference frame, and the predetermined sharpening strength may be adjusted based on the propagate cost. By way of example rather than limitation, the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength may be determined as a weighed sum of the predetermined sharpening strength and the propagate cost.

[0111] In a further example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, the target ROI may be partitioned into a plurality of blocks. The following operations are performed for each of the plurality of blocks: determining a gradient of each pixel within the block, determining a first proportion of pixels within the block whose gradients are larger than a first gradient threshold, determining a second proportion of pixels within the block whose gradients are larger than a second gradient threshold, the second gradient threshold being larger than the first gradient threshold, and adjusting, for pixels of the block, the predetermined sharpening strength based on the first proportion and the second proportion. By way of example, the first proportion may correspond to the above-mentioned parameter RatioLow, and the second proportion may correspond to the above-mentioned parameter RatioHigh.

[0112] For example, if the first proportion is larger than a first threshold or the second proportion is larger than a second threshold or the second proportion is smaller than a third threshold, the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength may indicate that the edge sharpening is not performed on the block. If none of the following condition is met, the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength may be negatively correlated with the first proportion: the first proportion is larger than the first threshold, the second proportion is larger than the second threshold, and the second proportion is smaller than the third threshold.

[0113] In a further example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, the predetermined sharpening strength is adjusted for a block within the target ROI based on an MV of the block with respect to the first frame. By way of example rather than limitation, if the MV of the block is smaller than a threshold, the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength may indicate that the edge sharpening is not performed on the block.

[0114] In a further example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, the predetermined sharpening strength may be adjusted for a pixel within the target ROI based on a difference between the pixel and at least one pixel surrounding the pixel. By way of example rather than limitation, if the difference between the pixel and the at least one pixel is smaller than a threshold, the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength may indicate that the edge sharpening is not performed on the pixel.

[0115] In a further example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, the predetermined sharpening strength may be adjusted based on a ratio of the target ROI to the current frame. For example, if the ratio of the target ROI to the current frame is larger than a threshold, the predetermined sharpening strength may be decreased for the target ROI. By way of example, the ratio of the target ROI to the current frame may correspond to the above-mentioned parameter ROISizeRatio.

[0116] In a further example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, the predetermined sharpening strength may be adjusted based on semantic information of the target ROI. For example, if content of the target ROI belongs to a predetermined category (such as human face, warning signs or the like) , the predetermined sharpening strength may be increased for the target ROI. If content of the target ROI does not belong to the predetermined category and is irregular texture, the predetermined sharpening strength may be decreased for the target ROI, or the adjusted predetermined sharpening strength may indicate that the edge sharpening is not performed on the target ROI.

[0117] In a further example embodiment, in order to determine the respective sharpening strengths, the predetermined sharpening strength may be adjusted based on a quality of the video. For example, if a noise intensity of the video is larger than a threshold and the video contains compression distortion, the predetermined sharpening strength may be increased for the target ROI.

[0118] In some embodiments, an asymmetric clipping operation may be performed on pixel values sharpened through the edge sharpening. Detail of the asymmetric clipping operation is described above and thus is not described here again.

[0119] In some embodiments, at 908, a blurring strength for a block within the current frame and outside of the target ROI may be determined based on at least one of the following: a QP of the block, a gradient of the block, and a distance of the block to the target ROI. By way of example rather than limitation, the blurring strength may be determined based on the a weighted sum of the QP of the block, the gradient of the block, and the distance of the block to the target ROI. Furthermore, a blurring operation may be performed on the block based on the blurring strength. Thereby, the subjective quality of the video can be improved.

[0120] In should be understood that the proposed method may be applicable for different video coding standards (such as H. 264, H. 265, H. 266, and / or the like) , different application scenarios (such as live streaming, web real time communication, and / or the like) , and different rate control schemes. The scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this respect.

[0121] In view of the above, the solutions in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure can advantageously improve coding efficiency and coding quality.

[0122] According to further embodiments of the present disclosure, a non-transitory computer-readable recording medium is provided.

[0185] In the example embodiments of performing video encoding, the input device 1050 may receive video data as an input 1070 to be encoded. The video data may be processed, for example, by the video coding module 1025, to generate an encoded bitstream. The encoded bitstream may be provided via the output device 1060 as an output 1080.

[0186] In the example embodiments of performing video decoding, the input device 1050 may receive an encoded bitstream as the input 1070. The encoded bitstream may be processed, for example, by the video coding module 1025, to generate decoded video data. The decoded video data may be provided via the output device 1060 as the output 1080.

[0187] While this disclosure has been particularly shown and described with references to example embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the present application as defined by the appended claims. Such variations are intended to be covered by the scope of this present application. As such, the foregoing description of embodiments of the present application is not intended to be limiting.
