[0001] The present invention relates to salt-bush extract compositions suitable for application to the skin, uses thereof and methods of their preparation. Background of the invention
[0002] Recently, along with changes in lifestyle and interest in well-being, there is an increase in demand for anti-aging cosmetic products that can be used to reverse or slow down the development of the visible signs of aging of the skin.
[0003] The skin plays a vital role in protecting against the external environment. This is called the “barrier function” of the skin. The skin barrier protects against many different types of irritating stimuli (eg, chemicals, air pollutants, dryness, UV radiation, etc) and prevents excessive moisture loss. Transepidermal moisture loss (TEWL) increases with age. Increased TEWL can result in the appearance of fine lines that are dehydration lines as opposed to traditional wrinkles due to loss of collagen and elastin in the tissue. One method to protect or repair the skins barrier function is to ensure that skin is hydrated by using a cosmetic composition. Better hydrated skin has improved function, improved feel or comfort level, and improved appearance.
[0004] Cosmetics for improving hydration are known. However, there are limits on the level of hydration achievable by current technologies and products that provide one or more of increased hydration, hydration that penetrates deeper into the skin, or hydration that is longer lasting are in demand.
[0005] There is a need for cosmetic topical formulations that improve hydration levels in skin. In particular, formulations that improve hydration levels in mature skin (eg 40, 45, 50, or 55 years old and over).
[0006] Additionally, consumers are increasingly conscious of the source and nature of the ingredients in their cosmetic products and there is a need to provide cosmetic compositions comprising natural ingredients.

[0008] The present invention relates to a composition for improving skin conditioning, the composition comprising salt-bush extract as an active ingredient. The composition may improve skin condition and appearance of skin through enhancing skin hydration.
[0009] In one aspect of the disclosure there is provided a composition including (i) from about 0.5 to about 10% w / w salt bush extract, at least 5% glycerin, (ii) at least one aqueous solvent, and (iii) at least one emulsifying agent or at least one gelling agent. The emulsion can be either an oil in water or a water in oil emulsion.

Claims
CLAIMS 1. A composition including from (i) from about 0.5 to about 10% w / w salt bush extract, at least 5% glycerin, (ii) at least one aqueous solvent, and (iii) at least one emulsifying agent or at least one gelling agent.
2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition further comprises at least one additional emollient and / or at least one additional humectant.
3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the at least one additional emollient is included in an amount from about 10 wt% to about 15 wt% of the total weight of the composition, preferably about 14 wt%.
4. The composition of claim 2 or 3 wherein the at least one additional humectant included in an amount from about 5 wt% to about 10 wt% of the total weight of the composition, preferably about 8 wt%.
5. The composition of any one of claims 2 to 4 wherein the emollient is selected from the group consisting of: Isononyl Isononanoate; Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil; Triolein and combinations thereof.
6. The composition of any one of claims 2 to 5 wherein the humectant is selected from the group consisting of: Squalane, Pentyl Glycol, Propanediol, Betaine, Sodium Hyalyronate, Hexylene Glycol and combinations thereof.
7. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the emulsifying agent or gelling agent is included in an amount from about 1 wt% to about 5 wt%, preferably about 4 wt%.
8. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 7 further comprising at least one antioxidant and / or at least one viscosity modifier and / or at least one skin conditioning agent.

13. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the emulsifier is selected from polyglyceryl-4 Oleate, polyglyceryl-6 Oleate, polyhydroxystearic acid and combinations thereof.
14. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition further includes a peptide, preferably selected from the group consisting of Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8 and or combinations thereof.
15. The composition of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the composition further includes an environmental protectant, preferably Ectoin.
16. The composition of any one of claims 8 to 15, wherein the antioxidant is ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate.
17. The composition of any one of the preceding claims wherein the salt bush extract is present in a concentration of from about 1% w / w about 10% w / w.
18. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 16 wherein the salt bush extract is present in a concentration of from about 0.5% w / w to 5% w / w.
19. The composition of any one of claims 1 to 18 wherein the salt bush extract is present in a concentration of from about 1% w / w to 5% w / w.

32. The composition of any of the claims 1 to 31, wherein the extract is of the whole salt bush, the whole salt bush excluding roots, or salt bush leaves.
33. The composition of any of the claims 1 to 32, wherein the salt bush is roughly chopped, shredded or otherwise broken into smaller pieces before extraction.
34. The composition of any of the claims 1 to 33, wherein the extract is extracted in water, glycerin or a combination thereof.
35. A method of hydrating the skin comprising applying to the skin a composition comprising the composition of any one of claims 1 to 34.
36. The method of claim 35 wherein the skin shows an increase in hydration of about 10%, or about 15%, or about 20% or about 25% or about 30% 3 hours after application.
37. The method of claim 35 wherein the composition comprises at least 1% salt bush extract and the skin shows an increase in hydration of about 20% 3 hours after application.

The method of claim 35 wherein the composition comprises at least 5% salt bush extract and the skin shows an increase in hydration of about 25% or about 30% 3 hours after application. 100603894839.
