Description

METHODS OF CONTROLLING CLOUD POINT OF ALKALINE CATALYZED NONIONIC SURFACTANTSFIELD

[0001] Embodiments relate to methods and compositions for controlling the cloud point of nonionic surfactants through the addition of neutralization agents.BACKGROUND

[0002] Surfactants are widely used in a variety of industries, including detergents, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, to modify interfacial forces between liquid-liquid phases and / or liquid-solid phases. Performance of surfactants in various cleaning applications is related to a number of physical properties, including the solubility of the surfactant at working temperatures. Nonionic surfactants typically exhibit temperature-dependent solubility, where “cloud point” is used to describe the temperature when a nonionic surfactant forms larger micelles; above cloud point, phase separates may happen in the surfactant solution. Generally, the cleaning performance of surfactants are most effective around the respective cloud point. In cleaning compositions, high surfactant cloud points are often preferred as higher temperatures are typically associated with cleaning processes (e.g., metal cleaning, dish washing) .

[0003] The cloud point for a given surfactant can be affected by chemical structure, and solution-dependent factors such as pH, ionic strength, solubility, and intermolecular interactions. Previous methods to modify the cloud point have involved structural changes to the surfactant, such as incorporating repeats of ethylene oxides (EO) or propylene oxide (PO) to modify the hydrophilic / lipophilic balance, or the use of hydrotropes like sodium cumene sulfonate (SCS) and sodium xylene sulfonate (SXS) to improve solubility. Other approaches may include using multiple surfactants having varied cloud points. While these approaches can increase solubility and surfactant performance, improvements are often accompanied by increased foaming, increased cost, reduced cleaning performance and biodegradability.SUMMARY

[0004] In an aspect, embodiments disclosed herein are directed to methods of adjusting the cloud point of an alkoxylated nonionic surfactant containing residual alkaline catalyst, the method containing: neutralizing the alkoxylated nonionic surfactant by creating a mixture with an organic acid having 5 to 20 carbon atoms and selected from one or more of an aromatic acid, organic sulfuric  acid, organic phosphoric acid, or branched fatty acid; wherein the organic acid is added at a concentration sufficient to place the mixture at a pH in the range of 5.0 to 8.0.

[0005] In an aspect, embodiments disclosed herein are directed to surfactant compositions containing: an alkoxylated nonionic surfactant with a general structural formula R- (PO) x- (EO) y- (PO) z-OH, wherein R is a C8 to C22 alkyl group, and x and y are, independently, from 1 to 20, and z is 0 to 20; and an organic acid having 5 to 20 carbon atoms and selected from one or more of an aromatic acid, organic sulfuric acid, organic phosphoric acid, or branched fatty acid; wherein the surfactant composition comprises 1500 ppm to 3000 ppm of residual KOH; wherein the surfactant composition has a pH in the range of 5.0 to 8.0.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0006] Embodiments relate to methods and compositions for controlling the cloud point of alkoxylated nonionic surfactants by neutralization by addition of one or more organic acids having 5 to 20 carbon atoms and selected from aromatic acid, organic sulfuric acid, organic phosphoric acid, or branched fatty acid. Methods may include neutralization of an alkoxylate product mixture with an organic acid that is added at a concentration sufficient to place the product mixture pH in the range of 5.0 to 8.0. In some cases, surfactant compositions treated with an organic acid may exhibit an increase in cloud point according to ASTM D2024-09 of at least 3 ℃, or at least 5 ℃, such as in a range of 3 ℃ to 40 ℃.

[0007] Alkoxylation describes the polyaddition of alkylene oxides such as propylene oxide and / or ethylene oxide onto a starter compound containing one or more active hydrogens, such as an alcohol, polyols, esters, and the like. Alkoxylation catalysts may vary in composition, but may include alkaline catalysts, such as potassium or sodium hydroxide. Following reaction, alkoxylated products may form a crude surfactant composition containing an alkoxylated nonionic surfactants and residual alkaline materials (e.g., alkoxylation catalyst) that can impact surfactant performance, including modifying properties of the crude surfactant composition such as pH, ionic strength, and the like.

[0008] Methods disclosed herein may be used for controlling the cloud point of alkoxylated products that include neutralization of residual alkaline catalyst in a crude surfactant composition with an organic acid. Neutralization refers to the addition of a sufficient concentration of organic acid to a crude surfactant composition to shift the pH into a range of 5.0 to 8.0, or 6.0 to 8.0. The amount and type of residual alkaline catalyst (e.g., residual KOH) in the crude surfactant composition may vary,  and in some cases may be present, for example in an amount up to 3000 ppm, such as in a range of 1500 ppm to 3000 ppm, or 2000 ppm to 2500 ppm.

[0009] In some cases, one or more organic acids may be added to a crude surfactant composition at a molar ratio (alkaline: acid) in the range of 1: 4 to 1: 4, or in a range of 1: 4 to 1: 1. The ratio may vary depending on organic acid type and concentration, and may be added in some cases in an amount sufficient to modify the pH of the crude surfactant mixture in a range of 5.0 to 8.0, or 6.0 to 8.0. In some cases, organic acids may be added in an amount that increases the cloud point temperature of the surfactant composition by 3 ℃ to 40 ℃, 5 ℃ to about 40 ℃, or 5 to 35 ℃, as compared to an alkoxylated product neutralized by acetic acid or inorganic acid, particularly acetic acid.

[0010] Methods disclosed herein may be used to treat crude products obtained from the alkoxylation of hydroxy starter compounds such as alcohols or polyols, alkoxylated esters, and the like. In some cases, alkoxylated nonionic surfactants may have the general structural formula:

[0011] R- (PO) x- (EO) y- (PO) z-OH

[0012] wherein R is a C8 to C22 alkyl group, and x and y are, independently, from 1 to 20, and z is 0 to 20.

[0013] Methods may include modifying the cloud point of a alkoxylated nonionic surfactant by application of a neutralization agent such as an organic acid having 5 to 20 carbon atoms and selected from one or more of an aromatic acid, organic sulfuric acid, organic phosphoric acid, or branched fatty acids. In some cases, organic acids having 5 to 20 carbon atoms may be selected from the following general structures:

[0014] (1) Aromatic carboxylic acids of the formula: C6H4 (R) (COOH) , where R is a saturated or unsaturated carbon chain having a carbon number ranging from 0 to 13;

[0015] (2) Alkylbenzenesulfonic acids of the formula: C6H4 (R) (SO3H) , where R is a saturated or unsaturated carbon chain having a carbon number ranging from 0 to 14;

[0016] (3) Alkyl ether phosphoric acid of the formula: R1 (AO) nP (=O) (OR2) 2, where R1 is alkyl, alkenyl, or alkylaryl; n is 1 to 10; and R2 is hydrogen or absent, AO is ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide or a mixture thereof; or

[0017] (4) Branched fatty acids of the formula: CnH2n+1- (2m) (R) m COOH, where R is an alkyl branch group, m is the number of branches, where each alkyl branch R may independently have differing carbon number, n is an integer from 3 to 10, and the branched fatty acid has a total carbon number of 5 to 20 and may be saturated or contain one or more double bonds.

[0018] Suitable neutralization agents may include organic acids including aromatic acids such as salicylic acid, 4-vinylbenzoic acid, and the like, organic sulfonic acids such as dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid (DBSA) , organic phosphoric acids such as alkyl ether phosphoric acids, and branched carbon chain fatty acids such as 3, 5, 5-tri-methyl hexanoic acid (TMHA) .

[0019] Methods disclosed herein may be used to generate surfactant compositions having an increased cloud point for use in a variety of cleaning applications. Methods enable the production of surfactant compositions having high cloud points, without the reliance on chemical structure modifications of surfactants and with the reduction or elimination of need for additional hydrotropes. Surfactant compositions disclosed herein may also exhibit increased cloud point that is stable in the high alkaline conditions often encountered in cleaning applications such degreasing, and treatment of hydrophobic soils and particles.

[0020] While formulation components and properties have been disclosed individually, it is envisioned that component elements may be included, excluded, or combined in any manner or subcombination utilizing any of the above concentration ranges and nested subranges therein. Further, that the recited formulation properties may be similarly achieved through various combinations of the recited components within the recited ranges.

[0021] Examples

[0022] The following examples are provided to illustrate the embodiments of the invention, but are not intended to limit the scope thereof. Table 1 provides the materials used in the following examples.

[0023] Example 1: Neutralization of alkoxylated nonionic surfactants

[0024] In this example, comparative and inventive surfactant formulations were surveyed with varied types of alkoxylated nonionic surfactants and organic acids. In a generalized procedure, a sample containing an aliquot of 50 mL crude surfactant containing 2000-2500 ppm KOH was added to a 100 mL beaker. The respective organic acid was then added to each solution, which were then heated to 50℃ and stirred for 2 hours. Stirring was then halted and allowed to cool to room temperature before further testing. Table 2 lists the equivalent amounts (mol. ratio) of organic acid added to neutralize the respective surfactant for the sample formulation. Sample formulations are shown in Table 3.

[0025] The cloud point for sample formulations was measured according to ASTM D2024-09 Standard Test Method for Cloud Point of Nonionic Surfactants. For each sample, an aliquot of 100 mL 1%aqueous surfactant solution was prepared by weighing 1 g sample into a 150 mL beaker and adding 99 g of distilled water. The mixture was then stirred until clear and homogeneous, and placed into a water bath. The sample mixture was heated until cloudy. The sample was removed from the and allowed to cool, and the temperature was recorded when the solution became clear. For the samples with cloud points lower than the room temperature, the samples were placed in the refrigerator until the sample became clear and homogeneous. Then thermometer was used to agitate the solution gently and record the temperature when the solution became cloudy. Results for sample formulation are shown in Table 4.

[0026] In the examples, CE A to CE G represent commercialized TERGITOLTM CA-90 with addition of 2000 ppm acetic acid. As shown in Table 4, the addition of organic acids to neutralized CA-90 does not modify cloud point to the extent of the inventive examples.

[0027] CE A1 to CE A4 contain commercial blocked polyalkylene glycol surfactants TERGITOL CA-90, CA-60, ECOSURF LFE-635 and LFE-1410 surfactants. The surfactants are blocked polyalkylene glycols derived from a co-polymer of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) using KOH catalyst and neutralized by acetic acid (CE A1 and CE A2) or phosphoric acid (A3 and A4) .

[0028] For IE A1 to IE A4, the residual KOH catalyst in surfactants was neutralized with DBSA. As shown in Table 4, the cloud point of IE A1 to IE A4 were significantly higher than CE A1 to CE A4; . 24 ℃, 34 ℃, 14 ℃, and 5 ℃, respectively. Further, IE A1 showed a higher cloud point increase over CE B1 (contains 2000 ppm hydrotrope SDBS) ; 24 ℃ improvement compared to 12 ℃.

[0029] IE B1 to IE El are samples of crude CA-90 neutralized with salicylic acid, 4-vinylbenzoic acid, octyl phenol ether phosphoric acid and 3, 5, 5-trimethyl hexanoic acid, respectively. By  comparing the cloud point of CE Al, significant cloud point improvement could be observed over acetic acid.

[0030] The data of IE Fl to IE H1 shows that the blends of acetic acid and organic acid with 5-20 carbon atoms ranging from 10 / 90 to 90 / 10 (w / w) also improve the cloud point of the surfactant by 3, 10 and 20℃, respectively. The results also show that the increased ratio of longer carbon chain organic acid, increase the cloud point improvement.

[0031] While the foregoing is directed to exemplary embodiments, other and further embodiments may be devised without departing from the basic scope thereof, and the scope thereof is determined by the claims that follow.
