[0002] The present invention relates to compositions of active ingredients in the field of agriculture, to methods of using the compositions in the field of agriculture, methods of controlling, limiting or preventing an infestation of plants by phytopathogenic microorganisms in treating plant propagation material, and to a seed treatment use.
[0003] Whilst many fungicidal compounds and compositions, belonging to various different chemical classes, have been / are being developed for use as fungicides in crops of useful plants, crop tolerance and activity against particular phytopathogenic fungi do not always satisfy the needs of agricultural practice in many respects, especially as plant propagation material treatment. Therefore, there is a continuing need to find new compounds and compositions having superior biological properties for use in controlling or preventing infestation of plants by phytopathogenic fungi.
[0004] Therefore, the aim of the present invention is to propose new mixtures, and especially new plant propagation material treatments, guaranteeing a good efficacy against phytopathogenic fungi belonging to Oomycetes (Oomycota phytopathogens) and / or Ascomycotes (Ascomycota phytopathogens), and especially achieving a synergistic effect to treat phytopathogenic fungi belonging to Oomycetes and / or Ascomycotes.
[0005] The present invention provides a composition comprising an active ingredient A and an active ingredient B, wherein the active ingredient A comprises a phosphorus-based compound, and the active ingredient B comprises a compound selected from Trichoderma sp.. The composition can further comprise one or more customary formulation adjuvant(s).
[0006] A composition according to the present invention typically is a pesticidal composition.
[0007] A composition, microorganism, metabolite or compound having “pesticidal activity” or “pesticide” as used herein means a composition, microorganism, metabolite or compound that controls, modifies, or prevents the growth of pests. The term “pesticidally effective amount” or “effective amount of pesticide” where used means the quantity of such a composition, microbial strain, compound, or metabolite that is capable of producing an effect on the growth of pests. Controlling or modifying effects include all deviation from natural development, such as killing, retardation and the like, and prevention includes barrier or other defensive formation in or on a plant to prevent pest infection. The term “pesticidal activity” or “pesticides” includes insecticidal or fungicidal activity or “insecticides” or “fungicides”.
[0008] A composition according to the present invention typically is a fungicidal composition. The term “fungicide” or “fungicidal” as used herein means a composition, metabolite or microorganism or compound that controls, modifies, or prevents the growth of fungi. The term “fungicidally effective amount” or “effective amount of fungicide” means the quantity of such a compound, metabolite, microorganism or composition that is capable of producing an effect on the growth of fungi. Controlling or modifying effects include all deviation from natural development, such as killing, retardation and the like, and prevention includes barrier or other defensive formation in or on a plant to prevent fungal infection, eg. the composition according to the present invention may act as a plant growth regulator. The composition according to the present invention comprises a fungicidally effective amount of the active ingredient A and / or the active ingredient B.
[0009] The composition according to the present invention typically is an agricultural- acceptable composition.
[0010] Throughout this document, the expression “composition” stands for the various mixtures or combinations of active ingredients A and B, for example in a single “ready-mix” form, in a combined spray mixture composed from separate formulations of the single active ingredient components, such as a “tank-mix”, and in a combined use of the single active ingredients when applied in a sequential manner, i.e. one after the other with a reasonably short period, such as a few hours or days. The order of applying the active ingredients A and B is not essential for working the present invention.
[0011] The present invention also relates to a method of controlling, limiting or preventing an infestation of a plant by Oomycetes and / or Ascomycotes, which comprises applying to propagation material of said plant, the composition according to the present invention.
[0012] Controlling, limiting or preventing (and its inflections), within the context of the present invention, mean reducing any undesired effect, such as pathogenic, and especially phytopathogenic such as fungi that belong to Oomycetes and / or Ascomycotes, infestation or attack of, and pathogenic damage on plant propagation material to such a level that an improvement is demonstrated. The present invention has advantageous properties for protecting plants against pathogenic, such as phytopathogenic, especially Oomycota phytopathogens and / or Ascomycota phytopathogens, attack or infestation, which result in a disease and damage to the plant; particularly in instance of plants, the present invention can control, limit or prevent pathogenic damage on a seed, parts of plant and / or plant grown from the treated seed.
[0013] The present invention has particularly advantageous levels of biological activity, more preferably as plant propagation material treatment, against Oomycetes and / or Ascomycotes.

[0065] Even distribution of the composition of the invention and adherence thereof to the propagation material is desired during the treatment process, this is particularly preferable when the propagation material is a seed. The treatment could vary from a thin film of the formulation containing the composition of the invention on a plant propagation material, such as a seed, where the original size and / or shape are recognizable to a thick film (such as a coating or pelleting with many layers of different materials (such as carriers, for example, clays; different formulations, such as of active ingredients; polymers; and colourants)) where the original shape and / or size of the seed is no longer recognisable.
[0066] More particularly, said thin film can be a film-forming polymer well-known in the art. The composition can include at least one polymer selected from water-soluble and water- dispersible film-forming polymers. Suitable polymers have an average molecular weight of at least about 1,000 up to about 100,000; more specifically at least about 5,000, up to about 100,000. The aqueous compositions generally contain from about 0.5% to about 10% by weight of the composition of polymer (b). In a specific embodiment, the compositions contain from about 1.0% up to about 5% by weight of a film-forming polymer. Suitable polymers are selected from alkyleneoxide random and block copolymers such as ethylene oxi de-propylene oxide block copolymers (EO / PO block copolymers) including both EO-PO-EO and PO-EO- PO block copolymers; ethylene oxi de-butylene oxide random and block copolymers; C2-6 alkyl adducts of ethylene oxi de-propylene oxide random and block copolymers; C2-6 alkyl adducts of ethylene oxi de-butylene oxide random and block copolymers; polyoxyethylenepolyoxypropylene monoalkylethers such as methyl ether, ethyl ether, propyl ether, butyl ether or mixture thereof; vinylacetate / vinylpyrrolidone copolymers; alkylated vinylpyrrolidone copolymers; polyvinylpyrrolidone; polyalkyleneglycol including the polypropylene glycols and polyethylene glycols; and any mixture thereof. [0067] Accordingly, the active ingredient(s) of the invention, and more preferably the composition(s) comprising the active ingredient(s), can preferably adhere to the propagation material, such as a seed.
[0068] Although it is believed that the present method can be applied to a seed in any physiological state, it is preferred that the seed be in a sufficiently durable state that it incurs no damage during the treatment process. Typically, the seed would be a seed that had been harvested from the field; removed from the plant; and separated from any cob, stalk, outer husk, and surrounding pulp or other non-seed plant material. The seed would preferably also be biologically stable to the extent that the treatment would cause no biological damage to the seed. It is believed that the treatment can be applied to the seed at any time between harvest of the seed and sowing of the seed or during the sowing process (seed directed applications).
[0069] The composition according to the present invention can be applied to seeds using conventional treating techniques and machines, such as fluidized bed techniques, the roller mill method, rotostatic seed treaters, and drum coaters. Other methods, such as spouted beds may also be useful. The seeds may be pre-sized before coating. After coating, the seeds are typically dried and then transferred to a sizing machine for sizing. Such procedures are known in the art and are set out in more detail below.
[0070] The composition used in the method according to the present invention can be called a dressing composition, which relates to a liquid composition useful for covering and / or wetting a plant propagation material, and more preferably a seed, at least in part or in totality.
[0071] The composition according to the present invention is particularly suited for dressing applications on plant propagation material, especially on seeds. The techniques of seed treatment application are well known to those skilled in the art, and they may be used readily in the context of the present invention. The compositions of the invention is applied to the seed as slurry or a soak. There also may be mentioned, e.g., film coating or encapsulation. The coating processes are well known in the art, and employ, for seeds, the techniques of film coating or encapsulation, or for the other multiplication products, the techniques of immersion.
[0072] One method of applying the composition according to the invention consists in spraying or wetting the plant propagation material with the aqueous liquid preparation, or mixing the plant material with such liquid preparation. Also, before the application, the composition of the invention may be diluted with water by simple mixing at ambient temperature in order to prepare an on-farm seed treatment formulation.
[0073] Typically, a tank-mix formulation for seed treatment application comprises 0.25 % to 80 % by weight, especially 1 to 75 % by weight, of active ingredient(s), and 99.75 % to 20 % by weight, especially 99 % to 25 % by weight, of a solid or liquid auxiliary (including, for example, a solvent such as water), where the auxiliaries can be a surfactant in an amount of 0 to 40 % by weight, especially 0.5 to 30 % by weight, based on the total weight of the tank-mix formulation.
[0074] Typically, a pre-mix formulation for seed treatment application comprises 0.5 to 99.9 % by weight, especially 1 to 95 % by weight, of acti ve ingredient(s), and 99.5 to 0.1 % by weight, especially 99 to 5 % by weight, of a solid or liquid adjuvant (including, for example, a solvent such as water), where the auxiliaries can be a surfactant in an amount of 0 to 50 % by weight, especi ally 0.5 to 40 % by weight, based on the total weight of the pre-mix formulation.
[0075] Whereas commercial products will preferably be formulated as concentrates (e.g., premix composition (formulation)), the end user will normally employ dilute formulations (e.g., tank mix composition).
[0076] Preferred formulations can have the following compositions (weight %):
[0077] Emulsifiable concentrates: active ingredient: 1 to 95 %, preferably 60 to 90 % surface-active agent: 1 to 30 %, preferably 5 to 20 % liquid carrier: 1 to 80 %, preferably 1 to 35 %
[0078] Dusts: active ingredient: 0.1 to 10 %, preferably 0.1 to 5 % solid carrier: 99.9 to 90 %, preferably 99.9 to 99 %
[0079] Suspension concentrates: active ingredient: 5 to 75 %, preferably 10 to 50 % water: 94 to 24 %, preferably 88 to 30 % surface-active agent: 1 to 40 %, preferably 2 to 30 %
[0080] Wettable powders: active ingredient: 0.5 to 90 %, preferably 1 to 80 % surface-active agent: 0.5 to 20 %, preferably 1 to 15 % solid carrier: 5 to 95 %, preferably 15 to 90 %
[0081] Granules: active ingredient: 0.1 to 30 %, preferably 0.1 to 15 1 solid carrier: 99.5 to 70 %, preferably 97 to 85

[0083] Soluble concentrate: active ingredient: 1 to 95 %, preferably 10 to 80 % liquid carrier: 5 to 99 %, preferably 20 to 90 %
[0084] The following Examples further illustrate, but do not limit, the invention.

[0087] Emulsions of any required dilution, which can be used in plant protection, can be obtained from this concentrate by dilution with water.
[0088] Ready-for-use dusts are obtained by mixing the combination with the carrier and grinding the mixture in a suitable mill. Such powders can also be used for dry dressings for seed.

[0096] Slow Release Capsule Suspension
[0097] 28 parts of the combination are mixed with 2 parts of an aromatic solvent and 7 parts of toluene diisocyanate / polymethylene-polyphenylisocyanate-mixture (8: 1). This mixture is emulsified in a mixture of 1.2 parts of polyvinylalcohol, 0.05 parts of a defoamer and 51.6 parts of water until the desired particle size is achieved. To this emulsion a mixture of 2.8 parts 1,6-diaminohexane in 5.3 parts of water is added. The mixture is agitated until the polymerization reaction is completed. The obtained capsule suspension is stabilized by adding 0.25 parts of a thickener and 3 parts of a dispersing agent. The capsule suspension formulation contains 28% of the active ingredients. The medium capsule diameter is 8-15 microns. The resulting formulation is applied to seeds as an aqueous suspension in an apparatus suitable for that purpose.
[0098] Another object of the present invention is a plant propagation material, such as for example a seed, treated with the composition as defined in the present invention.
[0099] In the present invention, each active ingredient can be applied to the plant propagation material from different compositions respectively, or the active ingredients can be gathered in the same composition, such as for example a ready-mix composition or a tank-mix composition.
[0100] Another object of the present invention is a use of said composition:
[0101] - against Oomycetes (Oomycota phytopathogens), and preferably against Pythium diseases, and / or - against Ascomy cotes (Ascomycota phytopatogens), and preferably against Fusarium diseases, Septaria diseases, and Pyricularia diseases.
[0102] In the present invention, the above uses and methods can exclude treatment of the human or animal body by surgery or therapy and diagnostic methods practised on the human or animal body.
[0103] Examples
[0104] The following non-limiting examples demonstrate the improved behaviour associated with a method according to the present invention.
[0105] A synergistic effect exists whenever the action of an active ingredient combination is greater than the sum of the actions of the individual components. The action to be expected E for a given active ingredient combination obeys the so-called COLBY formula and can be calculated as follows (COLBY, S.R. "Calculating synergistic and antagonistic responses of herbicide combination", Weeds, Vol. 15, pages 20-22; 1967): ppm = milligrams of active ingredient (= a.i.) per liter of spray mixture
[0106] X = % action by active ingredient A using p ppm of active ingredient
[0107] Y = % action by active ingredient B using q ppm of active ingredient.
[0108] According to COLBY, the expected (additive) action of active ingredients A+B using p+q ppm of active ingredient is
[0109] 100
[0110] If the action actually observed (O) is greater than the expected action (E), then the action of the combination is super-additive, i.e. there is a synergistic effect. In mathematical terms, synergism corresponds to a positive value for the difference of (O-E). In the case of purely complementary addition of activities (expected activity), said difference (O-E) is zero. A negative value of said difference (O-E) signals a loss of activity compared to the expected activity.
