Description

TIMING-RELATED SCHEMES IN NTNFIELD

[0001] This disclosure relates generally to wireless communications and, more particularly, to methods and apparatus for timing-related issues in supporting Non-Terrestrial Network in 5G and 6G.BACKGROUND

[0002] In Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) , due to the large distance between satellites in space orbit and User Equipment (UE) on the ground, the propagation delay is significant. To counter this delay and minimize interference with other UEs, the UE must pre-compensate for the uplink (UL) timing error before UL transmission. The UE calculates the distance between the satellite and the UE based on the GNSS position of the UE and the current position and moving direction of the satellite provided by satellite assistance information in the system information. With knowledge of the distance and its variation, the UE can predict the UE-specific UL Timing Advance. However, when the satellite assistance information becomes out-of-date and the GNSS position varies with the moving UE, the prediction can become less accurate over time. The UE needs to update the satellite assistance information and GNSS position periodically. However, since the update may interrupt data transmission, it should not be too frequent.

[0003] In addition to the UE pre-compensation, based on the UL arrival time, the network can also adjust the UE’s UL timing advance through signaling. The Timing Advance Command in the Random Access Response is an 11-bit field that indicates the index value TA (0, 1, 2…1282) used to control the amount of timing adjustment. The Timing Advance MAC Control Element has a 6-bit field that indicates the index value TA (0, 1, 2…63) used to control the amount of timing adjustment.

[0004] For dynamic UL scheduling, the UL scheduling offset between the PDCCH and PUSCH should be extended due to the long propagation delay in NTN, known as Koffset. The network will broadcast a cell-specific Koffset for all the UEs monitoring this cell. Based on the UE Timing Advance report, the network can assign a UE-specific Koffset for a particular UE to replace the cell-specific Koffset. The UE-specific Koffset is normally shorter than the cell-specific Koffset, thus reducing the transmission delay.

[0005] The UL Timing Advance applied by an NTN UE in RRC_IDLE / INACTIVE and RRC_CONNECTED is given by: TTA= (NTA+NTA, UE-specific+NTA, common+NTA, offset) ×Tc

[0006] Where:

[0007] NTA, UE-specific is UE self-estimated TA to pre-compensate for the service link delay.

[0008] NTA, common is network-controlled common TA.

[0009] NTA, offset is the TA offset to adjust the TA.

[0010] The current timing-related schemes can be improved in some way, and some new timing-related schemes can be applied in 5G or 6G NTN.SUMMARY

[0011] The following presents a simplified summary of one or more aspects in order to provide a basic understanding of such aspects. This summary is not an extensive overview of all contemplated aspects, and is intended to neither identify key or critical elements of all aspects nor delineate the scope of any or all aspects. Its sole purpose is to present some concepts of one or more aspects in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.

[0015] In an aspect of the disclosure, the Kbeamoffset is beam specific UL scheduling Koffset indicating the maximum Round-Trip Time between the UE in a certain beam index and the USRP (Uplink Synchronization Reference Point) . The validity duration of Kbeamoffset for different beam indices can be configured in System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. A location reporting event can occur when the UE moves to another beam index. After the UE reports location-related information, it can receive updated Kbeamoffset. The updated Kbeamoffset can be activated at the slot / subframe n+X, where X is predefined value.

[0016] In an aspect of the disclosure, the beam specific RTT indicates the maximum RTT between UE in certain beam index and the network. The Beam specific RTT for different beam indices can be calculated with Beam specific or Beam specific RTT = Kbeamoffset + Kmac.

[0023] Figure. 1 is a diagram illustrating Beam-specific Koffset: Kbeamoffset.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0024] The detailed description set forth below in connection with the appended drawings is intended as a description of various configurations and is not intended to represent the only configurations in which the concepts described herein may be practiced. The detailed description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of various concepts. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these concepts may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, well known structures and components are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring such concepts.

[0025] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to various apparatus and methods. These apparatus and methods will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, components, circuits, processes, algorithms, etc. (collectively referred to as “elements” ) . These elements may be implemented using electronic hardware, computer software, or any combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0026] To address mobile broadband needs in unserved / underserved areas as well as public safety needs, maritime, airplane connectivity and railway communication, 5G satellite access is introduced, known as Non-Terrestrial Networks.

[0027] The described invention operates in the context of 3GPP NTN. Various aspects of the present disclosure relate to timing-related schemes in Non-Terrestrial Network. The concepts and methods can also apply to NR (new radio access technology, or 5G technology) , 6G or other radio access technology.

[0028] Alternative #1: NTA, offset is a fixed offset used to calculate the Timing Advance:

[0029] NTA, offset can be a predefined value for different Frame structure types (TDD / FDD) , different systems (TN / NTN) , different cells, different UEs, different frequency bands, different frequency band combinations, different frequency ranges (e.g., FR1, FR2) etc. For example, the predefined value of  NTA, offset can be -80Ts or -80Tc for NTN.

[0030] NTA, offset can be a configured value for different Frame structure types (TDD / FDD) , different systems (TN / NTN) , different cells, different UEs, different frequency bands, different frequency band combinations, different frequency ranges (e.g., FR1, FR2) etc. It can be signaled by system information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. NTA, offset can be indicated to the UE with fixed 2, 3, or 4 bits. For example, the configuration and the corresponding value can be as follows:

[0031] Alternative #2: NTA equals 0 for PRACH transmission when timing alignment timer is expired, stopped, or not started. NTA can be updated based on TA Command field in Msg2 / MsgB, where TA Command field in Msg2 / MsgB has fixed bits (13bits or 14bits) . NTA= (TA-m) ·Ts , where the TA is the Timing Advance value in the TA Command field, and the m can be a predefined value or a configurable value. For example, NTA= (TA-4095) ·Ts or NTA= (TA-8191) ·Ts

[0032] NTA can be reset to 0 or reset to a value N for the first UL transmission after UE re-acquires GNSS, satellite ephemeris, or common TA related parameters, where N can be a fixed TA offset signaled from the network. Additionally, the timing alignment timer is started or restarted with timing alignments timer, a value M, after NTA is reset to 0 or reset to value N for the first UL transmission after UE re-acquired GNSS, satellite ephemeris, or common TA related parameters. The fixed TA offset can be signaled via system information or dedicated RRC signaling. The fixed TA offset can be provided in continuous value or enumeration. M can be configured via system information or dedicated RRC signaling and can be provided as a continuous value or enumeration. M can also be the value equal to latest acquired value of the timing alignment timer.

[0033] NTA is not reset to 0 for PRACH in the duration T390 where UL transmission can be allowed when GNSS validity duration expires. NTA can be updated based on RAR TA Command field in Msg2 / MsgB, where TA Command field in Msg2 / MsgB has fixed bits (11bits, 12 bits, 13bits, or 14bits) . If NTA_old <=threshold_1, NTA_new=NTA_old+ (TA-768) ·Ts, where the TA Command field indicates a relative value of NTA not absolute value; else NTA= (TA) ·Ts, where the TA Command field indicates an absolute value of NTA . The TA is the Timing Advance value in the TA Command field, and 768 is an example; it can be another pre-defined or configured value. Threshold_1 can be configured via system information, dedicated RRC signaling, or it can be 0.

[0034] Alternative #3: The Kbeamoffset is beam specific UL scheduling Koffset indicating the maximum Round-Trip Time between the UE in a certain beam index and the USRP (Uplink Synchronization Reference Point) . An absolute value of Kbeamoffset for different beam indices can be indicated in System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. A differential value of Kbeamoffset for different beam indices can be indicated in System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE, where the Kbeamoffset = Kcelloffset -differential value. The timing relationships between DL physical resources to UL physical resources are enhanced by Kbeamoffset.

[0035] The validity duration of Kbeamoffset for different beam indices can be configured in System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. After the validity duration of Kbeamoffset expired, the UE should re-acquire Kbeamoffset before uplink transmission. Alternatively, the network can assign the Kbeamoffset to UE after the validity duration.

[0036] The UE will trigger location-related information reporting once a location reporting event is met. A location reporting event can occur when the UE moves to another beam index, where the beam coverage can be notified to the UE through System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. Location reporting event can also occur when the distance of the UE to the beam reference point is smaller  (or not larger) than a threshold. The threshold can be predefined or configured by the network through System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. The beam reference point can be the beam center or some point within one beam, configured by network through System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE.

[0037] After the UE reports location-related information, it can update Kbeamoffset. The UE can receive updated Kbeamoffset with System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. The updated Kbeamoffset can be activated at the slot / subframe n+X, where X is predefined value, X can be 3, 4 or 5 and n is the end of slot / subframe of the transmission block where updated Kbeamoffset is transmitted. For the period between the point after UE reports location related information and the point before updated Kbeamoffset is activated, cell specific Koffset or previous Kbeamoffset is utilized.

[0038] The UE can directly update the Kbeamoffset based on configuration. For example, the Kbeamoffset for different beam indices can be pre-configured in System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, or MAC CE. The updated Kbeamoffset can be activated at the slot / subframe n+X, where X is a predefined value, X can be UE-gNB RTT+3 / 1 or UE-eNB RTT+3 / 1, and n is the end of slot / subframe of the transmission block where location-related information is reported. For the period between the point after the UE reports location-related information and the point before updated Kbeamoffset is activated, the cell specific Koffset or previous Kbeamoffset is utilized.

[0039] Alternative #4: The beam specific RTT indicates the maximum RTT between UE in certain beam index and the network. The Beam specific RTT for different beam indices can be calculated with Beam specific or Beam specific RTT = Kbeamoffset + Kmac. Tbeam_TA= (NTA, beam-specific+NTA, common+NTA, offset) ×Tc. The NTA, beam-specific is the the UE self-estimated TA based on the satellite ephemeris and beam coverage information provided by the network.

[0040] The UE can update beam specific RTT once it updates Kbeamoffset.

[0041] Alternative #5: UE can maintain two different DL timings by periodically or aperiodically tracking.

[0042] One DL timing, DL timing #1, is for satellite #1 and is used for SSB and system information-related timing. The UE periodically or aperiodically tracks SSB or other system information or cell specific DL synchronization-related reference signals to maintain DL timing #1.

[0043] The other DL timing, DL timing #2, is for satellite #2 and is sued for connected data and / or signaling. UE periodically or aperiodically tracks UE / beam specific DL synchronization related reference signals to maintain DL timing #2.

[0044] Alternative #6: UE can maintain different DL timing based on post-compensation.

[0045] For the initial cell search, UE obtains DL timing based on the detection of the PSS. And after acquiring satellite ephemeris, the UE periodically or aperiodically tracks DL timing by post-compensation the timing drift caused by the movement of the satellite and the UE.

[0046] When UE is required to receive DL signal from other satellite, UE maintains DL timing by  post-compensation for the timing drift caused by different satellite position. Then, the UE periodically or aperiodically tracks DL timing via post-compensation the timing drift caused by the movement of satellite and UE.

[0047] Alternative #7: After the UE updates satellite ephemeris in RRC connected mode, the UE specific TA may vary significantly, making the previous NTA unsuitable. To correct the NTA, after updating the satellite ephemeris in RRC connected mode, UE stops Timing Alignment Timer, resets NTAto 0 or a pre-configured value, initiates contention-based random access. If TTA < UE specific Koffset, the UE clears the UE specific Koffset. The UE behavior can vary between GSO and NGSO.

[0048] Alternative #8: For IoT NTN Preconfigured UL Resource, a new cell specific NTA can be used. This NTA can be signaled by System Information, RRC dedicated signaling, MAC CE or Downlink Control Information (DCI) . This value can be an absolute value or a differential value. UE uses this NTA to adjust the UL timing advance when performing UL transmission using Preconfigured UL Resource.

[0049] Alternative #9: NTA used in UE can be a negative value. In IoT NTN, if GNSS location information, satellite ephemeris and common TA are not updated in time, the UE specific TA can be incorrectly calculated. The error in UE specific TA can be expressed as too early in time. In such cases, the NTA should be a negative value. For example, the range of NTA is -20512<NTA<20512.

[0050] Alternative #10: The NR NTN Timing Advance reporting. In FR2 except for ATG, the Timing Advance field in Timing Advance Report MAC CE indicates the least integer number of slots, using subcarrier spacing of 120 kHz, greater than or equal to the Timing Advance value. In FR3 except for ATG, the Timing Advance field in Timing Advance Report MAC CE indicates the least integer number of slots, using subcarrier spacing of 60 kHz, greater than or equal to the Timing Advance value.
