Abstract

A method of reducing reference signal overhead and relevant devices are provided. The method by a terminal device includes measuring a downlink reference signal transmitted out through N transmit antennas of a network device to obtain measurement results, wherein the N transmit antennas transmitting the downlink reference signal are mapped from M antenna ports of a resource of the downlink reference signal by a first neural network, where M < N; and applying a second neural network on the measurement results to obtain channel information of a channel of the N transmit antennas or a channel information feedback report of the channel of the N transmit antennas. This facilitates low-overhead reference signal transmission.

Description

METHOD OF REDUCING REFERENCE SIGNAL OVERHEAD AND RELEVANT DEVICES

[0001] BACKGROUND OF DISCLOSURE

[0002] 1. Field of the Disclosure

[0003] The present application relates to the field of communication systems, and more particularly, to a method of reducing reference signal overhead and relevant devices.2. Description of the Related Art

[0004] In cellular wireless communication systems developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , user equipment (UE) is connected by a wireless link to a radio access network (RAN) . The RAN includes a set of base stations (BSs) which provide wireless links to UEs located in cells covered by the base station and an interface to a core network (CN) which provides overall network control. The RAN and CN each conduct respective functions in relation to the overall network. The so-called 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, namely, an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunication System Territorial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) has been developed for a mobile access network where one or more macro-cells are supported by a base station known as an eNodeB or eNB (evolved NodeB) . Evolved from LTE, the so-called 5G or new radio (NR) systems where one or more cells are supported by a base station known as a gNB. Envisioned to succeed the current 5G networks, the 6G cellular system is the forthcoming generation of wireless communication technology.

[0005] The 5G (fifth-generation) wireless systems support the transmission of CSI-RS for the system to measure the channel state information of downlink. The CSI-RS can be used by the UE to measure the channel state information, which can include the precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , ranking and / or channel quality indicator (CQI) information. The CSI-RS can also be used for beam management, fine time-frequency tracking, mobility measurement and rate matching.

[0006] One of the main usage cases of CSI-RS is for the UE to measure the downlink channel and obtain the channel state information. For that, the system can configure one more multiple CSI-RS resource set for the UE through RRC signaling. Each CSI-RS resource set can contain one or more CSI-RS resources. Each CSI-RS resource can be configured with up to 32 antenna ports, which can be mapped to one or more OFDM symbols, where each antenna port can correspond to one gNB transmit antenna. By measuring each antenna port, the UE can measure the channel between the UE and each gNB antenna.

[0007] To support flexible antenna configuration and deployment scenarios, NR supports various number of antenna ports: 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, and 32.

[0008] In a later release of NR specification, to support the deployment scenarios with very large number of gNB antennas, the number of antenna ports of CSI-RS is extended to 128. To support that, 4 CSI-RS resource with 32 antenna ports are aggregated to formulate an equivalent 128 port CSI-RS resource.

[0009] There are three different transmission modes of CSI-RS: periodic, semi-persistent and aperiodic.

[0010] In periodic transmission, the gNB provides the configuration of CSI-RS resources and then each CSI-RS resource would be transmitted periodically according to the periodicity and slot location provided by the RRC configuration. In semi-persistent transmission, the gNB first provides the configuration of CSI-RS resources, including periodicity and slot location in RRC. When the transmission of CSI-RS resource is needed, the gNB can send a MAC CE activation command to activate the transmission of CSI-RS resource and then the CSI-RS resource would be transmitted periodically according to periodicity and slot location until the gNB sends a MAC CE deactivation command. In aperiodic transmission, the gNB first provides the configuration of CSI-RS resource in RRC and then uses a DCI to trigger the transmission of one instance of CSI-RS resource.

[0011] In the band of centimeter wave, one base station could be equipped with hundreds of, or even thousands of transmit antennas. To train the channel of such system and obtain the CSI of the channel, the number of ports in the CSI-RS for CSI acquisition is generally the same as the number of transmit antennas, according to the existing technical solutions. Thus, the overhead of CSI-RS transmission in centimeter wave system would be so significant that the overall performance of the system would be impaired.SUMMARY

[0037] The processor 11 or 21 may include application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , other chipset, logic circuit and / or data processing device. The memory 12 or 22 may include read-only memory (ROM) , random access memory (RAM) , flash memory, memory card, storage medium and / or other storage device. The transceiver 13 or 23 may include baseband circuitry to process radio frequency signals. When the embodiments are implemented in software, the techniques described herein can be implemented with modules (e.g., procedures, functions, and so on) that perform the functions described herein. The modules can be stored in the memory 12 or 22 and executed by the processor 11 or 21. The memory 12 or 22 can be implemented within the processor 11 or 21 or external to the processor 11 or 21 in which case those can be communicatively coupled to the processor 11 or 21 via various means as is known in the art.

[0038] In some embodiments, the processor 11 of the terminal device 10 is utilized to measure a downlink reference signal transmitted out through N transmit antennas of a network device to obtain measurement results, wherein the N transmit antennas transmitting the downlink reference signal are mapped from M antenna ports of a resource of the downlink reference signal by a first neural network, where M < N, and apply a second neural network on the measurement results to obtain channel information of a channel of the N transmit antennas or a channel information feedback report of the channel of the N transmit antennas. This facilitates measuring the channel of very large number of antennas with reference signal with much smaller number of ports, thereby providing low-overhead reference signal transmission.

[0039] In some embodiments, the processor 21 of the network device 20 is utilized to map M antenna ports of a resource of a downlink reference signal onto N transmit antennas of the network device by a first neural network, where M < N, and transmit out the downlink reference signal through the N transmit antennas for a terminal device to measure the downlink reference signal such that measurement results of the downlink reference signal are applied to a second neural network to obtain channel information of a channel of the N transmit antennas or a channel information feedback report of the channel of the N transmit antennas. This facilitates measuring the channel of very large number of antennas with reference signal with much smaller number of ports, thereby providing low-overhead reference signal transmission.

[0040] FIG. 2 illustrates a method of reducing reference signal overhead 100 by a terminal device according to an embodiment of the present application. In some embodiments, the method 100 includes the following.

[0041] In Block 102, the terminal device (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) measures a downlink reference signal (e.g., CSI-RS) transmitted out through N transmit antennas of a network device (e.g., a base station, or a gNB) to obtain measurement results, wherein the N transmit antennas transmitting the downlink reference signal are mapped from M antenna ports of a resource of the downlink reference signal by a first neural network (e.g., Tx neural network) , where M < N. More specifically, the terminal device may be provided with a configuration of the downlink reference signal with the M antenna ports such that the downlink reference signal transmitted out through the N transmit antennas can be measured based on the configuration of the downlink reference signal with the M antenna ports. For example, the configuration of the downlink reference signal with the M antenna ports may include at least one of time domain location, frequency domain allocation, transmit power of the downlink reference signal and allocation of the M antenna ports in the downlink reference signal. The terminal device may also be provided with the number of transmit antennas (i.e., the number N) of which full channel information the terminal device is to obtain.

[0042] In Block 104, the terminal device applies a second neural network (e.g., Rx neural network) on the measurement results to obtain channel information (e.g., channel state information (CSI) ) of a channel of the N transmit antennas or a channel information feedback report (e.g., CSI feedback report) of the channel of the N transmit antennas. For example, the UE may measure a CSI-RS with 32 antenna ports (where M=32) to obtain the CSI of a channel of 128 antenna ports (where N=128) . More specifically, in one example, the output of the second neural network may include the channel information of the channel of the N transmit antennas, and the channel information feedback report may be calculated by the terminal device based on the obtained channel information of the channel of the N transmit antennas. In another example, the output of the second neural network may include the channel information feedback report of the channel of the N transmit antennas. The channel information feedback report can contain at least one of or all of precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , ranking (RI) and channel quality indicator (CQI) information.

[0043] The present application provides a solution to measure the channel of very large number of antennas with reference signal with much smaller number of ports. In other words, the overhead of reference signal needed to obtain the wireless channel of system (for example, the system of centimeter wave band) with very large scale antenna array is reduced.

[0044] In some embodiments, the terminal device may construct the second neural network based on the parameters provided by the network device. The method may further include being provided with a configuration of the second neural network for the terminal device to determine the second neural network, wherein the configuration of the second neural network includes one or more parameters provided by the network device, and the second neural network is constructed based on the one or more parameters provided by the network device.

[0045] In some embodiments, the second neural network may be constructed based on an indicated configuration for the second neural network. The method may further include being provided with a list of multiple configurations of the second neural network; being provided with a configuration index indicating one configuration of the second neural network from the provided list of multiple configurations of the second neural network; and determining the second neural network according to the provided configuration index.

[0049] FIG. 3 illustrates a method of reducing reference signal overhead 200 by a network device according to an embodiment of the present application. In some embodiments, the method 200 includes the following. In Block 202, the network device (e.g., base station or gNB) maps M antenna ports of a resource of a downlink reference signal (e.g., CSI-RS) onto N transmit antennas of the network device by a first neural network (e.g., Tx neural network) , where M < N. In Block 204, the network device, transmits out the downlink reference signal through the N transmit antennas for a terminal device (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) to measure the downlink reference signal such that measurement results of the downlink reference signal are applied to a second neural network (e.g., Rx neural network) to obtain channel information (e.g., channel state information (CSI) ) of a channel of the N transmit antennas or a channel information feedback report (e.g., CSI feedback report) of the channel of the N transmit antennas. This facilitates measuring the channel of very large number of antennas with reference signal with much smaller number of ports, thereby providing low-overhead reference signal transmission. Other details of the method 200 may be referred to the method 100 described above and are not repeated herein.

[0050] Further details about the invention are provided below.

[0051] A UE can be requested to measure a CSI-RS with M antenna ports to obtain the CSI of a channel of N antenna ports, where M < N. The UE can be first provided with the configuration of one CSI-RS resource with M antenna ports. The UE can also be provided with the configuration of a detection neural network, which the UE can be requested to apply on the measurement of the CSI-RS resource with M antenna ports to obtain the channel information of N ports. The output of the detection neural network could be the channel information of N ports and then the UE calculate the feedback CSI report, such as PMI, RI and CQI based on the obtained channel information of N ports. Another example of the output of the detection neural network could be the CSI feedback report such as PMI, RI and CQI.

[0052] An example of the CSI-RS transmission and measurement according to the techniques presented in the present application is illustrated in FIG. 4.

[0053] As shown in FIG. 4, the CSI-RS with M ports passes through a Tx neural network at the side of base station. The Tx neural network would map the M ports of CSI-RS resource onto N transmit antennas. After that, the CSI-RS is transmitted out through those N transmit antennas. At the UE side, the UE first receives the CSI-RS and then measures the CSI-RS. Then the UE inputs the measurement results of the CSI-RS to the Rx neural network and the output of the Rx neural network could be the full channel measurement of all N Tx transmit antennas. The output of the Rx neural network could be the CSI report such as PMI, CQI and / or RI of the channel of all N Tx transmit antennas.

[0054] In one method, the UE can be provided with the following configurations:

[0055] ● The configuration of CSI-RS with M ports. The configuration could include the time domain location of the CSI-RS transmission and frequency domain allocation of the CSI-RS. The configuration could further include the transmit power of the CSI-RS transmission and the allocation of the M ports in the CSI-RS.

[0056] ● The number of antennas of which the full channel information the UE is requested to obtain.

[0057] ● The configuration of the Rx neural network, which can notify the UE how to construct one Rx neural network used to obtain the channel information of full N transmit antennas or the CSI report of PMI / CQI / RI of the channel information of full N transmit antennas. For the configuration of the Rx neural network, the system can provide one of the following alternatives:

[0058] ○ In one example, the system can provide one or more parameters for the Rx neural network and then the UE can construct the Rx neural network based on the parameters provided by the system.

[0059] ○ In one example, the UE can be first provided with a list of multiple configurations of Rx neural network. The list of multiple configurations of Rx neural network can be pre-specified or pre-configured. The list of multiple configurations of Rx neural network can be provided by the system for example in RRC configuration. Then the system can provide one configuration index to the UE and the provided configuration index indicates one configuration of the Rx neural network from the provided list of multiple configurations of Rx neural network. Then the UE shall determine the Rx neural network according to the provided configuration index.

[0060] ○ In one example, the UE can be requested to construct the Rx neural network based on UE implementation and some measurement results at the UE side.

[0061] When the UE receives the configuration information, the UE can be requested to construct the Rx neural network based on the configuration information received from the system. The UE can receive the CSI-RS according to the configuration of CSI-RS and then measure the CSI-RS. Then the UE inputs the measurement results of the CSI-RS into the Rx neural network and the output of the Rx neural network could be the channel information of the full N transmit antennas. The output of the Rx neural network could be the CSI report of PMI / RI / CQI of the channel of the full N transmit antennas.

[0062] In one method, the UE can construct the Rx neural network through UE’s implementation. The UE can construct the Rx neural network according to the configuration of N and M which are provided by the system. The system can further provide the configuration information of channel characteristic of the channel between the system and UE, which can assist the UE to construct the Rx neural network at the UE side.

[0063] In one method, the UE can be provided with the configuration of a first CSI-RS with N ports and configuration of a second CSI-RS with M ports. Then the UE can receive and measure the first CSI-RS with N ports and the second CSI-RS with M ports. The UE can measure the first CSI-RS and the second CSI-RS. Then the UE can use the measurement results of the first CSI-RS and the second CSI-RS to construct the Rx neural network.

[0064] In one method, the system can construct the Tx neural network based on downlink measurement results. The system can transmit a first reference signal with N ports and requests the UE to measure the first reference signal and report the measurement result to the system. In another example, the system can construct the Tx neural network based on measurement results on some uplink reference signal. To support that, the system can request the UE to transmit a first uplink reference signal. The system can first provide the configuration of the first uplink reference signal, which can include one or more of the followings: the time domain location and the frequency domain resource allocation of the first uplink reference signal, the Tx power of the first uplink reference signal and the signal sequence of the first uplink reference signal. Upon receiving the configuration of the first uplink reference signal, the UE can be requested to transmit the first uplink reference signal according to the configuration provided by the system. The system can first receive and measure the first uplink reference signal and then construct the Tx neural network based on the measurement results of the first uplink reference signal.
