AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing PRACH detection and TA estimation methods struggle to accurately identify preamble IDs and calculate Timing Advance (TA) when delays exceed the cyclic prefix (CP) duration, leading to low Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR), high miss-detection probability, and unreliable uplink synchronization, particularly in Frequency Range 2 (FR2) systems with larger subcarrier spacing.

Method used

A method involving extended RACH reception windows and sliding window techniques is employed to enhance PRACH coverage, allowing for accurate preamble ID detection and TA estimation by segmenting and processing received data within sliding windows, thereby reducing interference and improving SINR.

Benefits of technology

The method extends PRACH coverage by ensuring complete sequence detection and reliable TA estimation, even in scenarios where delays exceed the CP duration, reducing miss-detection rates and enhancing uplink synchronization.

Abstract

A method for PRACH detection and TA estimation by extending a duration of a RACH reception window and using a plurality of sliding windows within which the gNB selects receiving data from each sliding window separately such that the saved data is segmented within each sliding window where each signal is transformed by a FFT to obtain a frequency domain value, each frequency domain value is correlated with a ZC sequence to form correlated data and the correlated data is transformed via an IFFT to a time domain signal, where a number of time domain signals are combined to obtain a PDP of the combination and if the max PDP value is larger than a threshold, a preamble ID is determined based on mapping between the preamble ID and ZC sequences such that a max PDP value between all sliding windows is selected and a TA is determined based on a max power point associated with the max PDP value. And a simplified method for PRACH detection and TA estimation for PRACH format C2 only by extending the RACH reception window to an integer multiple of PRACH CP duration and do FFT / correlation / IFFT before setting the sliding windows.

Description

RACH DETECTION AND TA ESTIMATION ALGORITHM FOR PRACH COVERAGE ENHANCEMENTBACKGROUND

[0001] 1. Field of the Invention

[0002] The present disclosure is related to O-RAN compliant telecommunications systems. More particularly, the present disclosure is related to RACH detection enhancement for next-generation Node B (gNB) systems.

[0003] 2. Description of Related Art

[0004] Cell coverage is important to commercial wireless communication systems because equipment requirements can be reduced with enhancement of cell coverage. Physical Random-Access Channel (PRACH) coverage is one of the key aspects of cell coverage as it conveys preambles, which are essential for the User Equipment (UE) random access process, including on-demand system information request and uplink time synchronization.

[0005] The PRACH preamble sequence is generated with a Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence, which is a named root sequence, and a cyclic shift indicator defined by Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . The next-generation Node B (gNB) provides the preamble configuration that a UE could use. During the random-access process, the UE selects one preamble randomly or based on gNB indication and transmits it to the gNB. The gNB detects the PRACH and identifies the Timing Advance (TA)  / preamble ID for the following random-access process.

[0006] The UE has acquired synchronization signal block (SSB) and random-access channel (RACH) configuration before random access process, from which it could get the time offset Toffset between the SSB and the PRACH sequence. As illustrated in FIG. 1, since UE has not acquired uplink synchronization with gNB, the UE sends the PRACH preamble based on the SSB receiving time tSSB_RX and the pre-defined time offset. Considering the SSB arriving time will be later than the sending time and PRACH transmission will cost some time, the PRACH preamble arrives late, and part of it may be out of gNB PRACH reception window.

[0007] Accordingly, it is a challenge for gNB to detect PRACH messages and acquire uplink  time synchronization for supporting a larger coverage requirement.

[0008] As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, 3GPP introduces a Cyclic Prefix (CP) to guarantee sufficient length for whole sequence (s) detection to the gNB receiver. If the delay is less than the CP duration, the received sequence (s) is a cyclic shift result of the original sequence (s) . However, if the delay is larger than the CP duration, the gNB may not get a whole sequence (s) (or a whole sequence with cyclic shift) . Insufficient RACH detection will result in low Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) , high Miss-detection probability, and unreliable TA calculation. As such, CP duration is a limitation of PRACH coverage.

[0009] Another issue is that there are increasing data demand calls for higher communication bandwidth. As the Frequency Range 1 (FR1) spectrum (from 410MHz to 7125MHz) is already congested, 5G operators prefer the Frequency Range 2 (FR2) spectrum (from 24.25 GHz to 71GHz) to take advantage of the large unused spectrum. Compared with FR1, which supports 15kHz / 30kHz / 60kHz subcarrier spacing (SCS) PRACH, FR2 PRACH SCS is several times larger than FR1. Due to the fact that CP length for short PRACH format would shorten along with the SCS increasing, the PRACH has become the bottleneck of cell coverage of the FR2 system.

[0010] The problem is how to detect PRACH sequence (s) and estimate TA while the coverage-related delay is larger than the 3GPP-defined CP duration.

[0011] FIG. 3 shows the general process of PRACH detection and TA estimation.

[0012] 1) the gNB Monitoring of PRACH message during a RACH reception window within each PRACH occasion is illustrated. This general reception duration is decided by the PRACH format only. The reception duration is always equal to the duration of all N repeated sequence (s) , and the starting time is always TCP later than the starting time of the RACH occasion, where TCP is the duration of the RACH preamble CP, and N is the 3GPP defined repetition number of each PRACH preamble formats.

[0013] 2) the gNB processing receiving data is as follows:

[0014] A) Segment the receiving data into N signals. The duration of each signal is identical with one sequence, which is donated by Tseq.

[0015] B) Fast Fourier transform signals to the frequency domain, which is represented by:

[0016] C) Correlate each signal  with root ZC sequence Xμ as follows:

[0017] D) Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) correlation results to the time domain, which is represented by cμ (ω, r) .

[0018] E) Get the Power Delay Profile (PDP) of time domain signals Pu (ω) as follows: Pu (ω) =|cμ (ω, r) |2

[0019] F) If the max PDP value Pmax is larger than a threshold, check the first point m which is: P (m) >threshold

[0020] Where Pmax is the max of all Pu (ω) . In the general TA estimation algorithm, m should not be larger than the length of one signal.

[0021] G) Ncs is the cyclic shift index for preamble generation. If Ncs is zero, only one preamble is created by each root sequence. Check the preamble ID based on the mapping of the ZC root sequence and preamble ID and calculate TA as follows:

[0022] where Lsignal is the length of one signal, which related to FFT / IFFT process.

[0023] H) If Ncs is nonzero, more than one preamble is created by one root sequence. Calculate TA and preamble ID by the offset from the first point and the first peak of |cμ (κ, r) | as follows:

[0024] Where the preamble index refers to the index of the preamble generated by each root sequence, Lseq donate the preamble sequence length, e.g., 839 for long format PRACH.

[0025] As can be seen, when the delay is larger than the CP duration, the receiving sequence is a mixture of interference and an incomplete part of the preamble sequence. The algorithm  accuracy of preamble ID detection and TA estimation will decline because the Pu (ω) is less than that calculated by the impact preamble sequence. Moreover, this algorithm could not support TA estimation when the delay is larger than the duration of the preamble sequence (m should not be larger than signal length) .

[0026] It was contemplated to select formats with more repeating sequences for PRACH coverage enhancement. It will be noted that the gNB adopts repetition combination to acquire combining gain into one PDP to reduce miss-detection rate. However, some signals contain inference only while the delay is larger than CP duration, are combined with PRACH sequence (s) . This is problematic because it reduces PRACH SINR. Moreover, when the delay is larger than the preamble sequence, the gNB with this method still can’t find proper TA.

[0027] Accordingly, there is a need for method that overcomes, alleviates, and / or mitigates one or more of the aforementioned and other deleterious effects of prior art RACH detection for gNB systems.SUMMARY

[0028] Accordingly, it is desired to provide a method to identify the preamble ID and TA in large RACH delay scenarios and extend the PRACH coverage.

[0029] It is further desired to provide a method facilitating reliable PRACH reception and TA measurement for PRACH coverage enhancement.

[0030] It is still further desired to provide a method that provides a PRACH detection and TA estimation algorithm suitable for all PRACH formats.

[0031] Finally, it is desired to provide a method that provides a simplified PRACH detection and TA estimation algorithm suitable for format C2 only.

[0032] In one configuration, a first method is provided that includes a PRACH detection and TA estimation algorithm suitable for all PRACH formats. Some of the aspects of the algorithm are as follows:

[0033] A) Compared with the PRACH format determined RACH reception window only, this invention supports coverage requirement and PRACH format codetermined RACH reception window duration. The computation formula is given in the detailed description.

[0034] B) Introduce the concept of sliding windows into the RACH detection process. Let gNB segment the time domain sequence within each sliding window into several signals and combine them to acquire combination gain.

[0035] The definition of each sliding window is given in the detailed description. The whole reception window could be covered by several partially overlapping sliding windows. At least one window contains the unabridged PRACH sequences (or sequences with cyclic shift)

[0036] C) Comparing the peak PDP of each sliding window to identify the proper TA and preamble ID.

[0037] This method can achieve the following objectives:

[0038] 1. Compared with the limited reception window defined by RACH occasion, extending the RACH reception window duration based on coverage requirement allows gNB to get sufficient RACH preamble.

[0039] 2. Compared with combining all signals, combining the signals within each sliding window could support proper TA estimation, which allows UE to acquire UL synchronization based on the TA given by RAR.

[0040] 3. Comparing with combining all signals, combining the signals within each sliding window could reduce interference of at least one combination, which increases PRACH SINR and reduces the miss-detection probability.

[0041] In another configuration, a second method is provided that uses a simplified PRACH detection and TA estimation algorithm suitable for format C2 only. Some of the aspects of the algorithm are as follows:

[0042] A) Let gNB segment the receiving message of to extend the RACH reception window to several signals.

[0043] B) Perform FFT / correlation / IFFT with each signal before selecting signals for sliding windows.

[0044] Compared with the first method, the simplified second method can be used to reduce complexity.

[0072] Method 1: RACH detection and TA estimation algorithm for all RACH formats

[0073] FIG. 4 shows a PRACH detection and TA estimation process flow 100 according to one configuration of the present invention. The method includes RACH detection 102, Select data with sliding windows 104, Segment data within each Sliding window 106, FFT 108, Root  Sequence correlation 110, IFFT 112, Combine and PDP calculation 114, PDP peak comparison with threshold 116, Maximum PDP comparation within all sliding windows 118, TA estimation 120 and Timing advance 122. These will be discussed in greater detail below.

[0074] Also depicted is the extended RACH reception window 140, which is illustrated with CP 142, sequence repeat 0 144, sequence repeat 1 146, sequence repeat 2 148, sequence repeat 3 150. As can be seen, method 100 extends the RACH reception window 140 duration based on coverage requirements allowing the gNB to get sufficient RACH preamble.

[0075] It will be understood that nonzero Ncs will affect the max TA. Accordingly, Ncs is set as zero to simplify the description of the method. The details of this process and the main difference with known methods are as follows:

[0076] 1) Other than the RACH reception window given before, this configuration extends the duration of the RACH reception window to monitor RACH from both the cell edge and the cell center UE. Thus, the minimum duration should relate to the delay (coverage) requirement. as follows: Tdelay=2*R / c TRxWindow> Tdelay+N*Tseq-TCP

[0077] where R is the cell coverage requirement, and c is the speed of the electromagnetic wave. N is the sequence repetition number of the PRACH preamble, TCP is the duration of the RACH preamble CP, and Tseq responses to the duration of one sequence of the RACH preamble.

[0078] The starting time of the extended RACH reception window 140 is TCP 141 later than the starting time of the RACH occasion 160. FIG. 5 shows the time relation for the RACH reception window 140, where t0 donates the starting time of the RACH occasion 160.

[0079] The extended RACH reception window 140 could be shorter or longer than the RACH occasion 160. The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbols in the extended RACH reception window 140 could not be used for other traffic.

[0080] 2) This configuration introduces the concept of a sliding window into the detection method.

[0081] The newly defined sliding windows 162, 164, 166, 168 duration is N*Tseq. The start time of the first window 162 is always TCP later than the starting time of the RACH occasion  160. The starting time offset between adjacent windows is TCP. gNB selects the receiving data within each sliding window 162, 164, 166, 168.

[0082] FIG. 6 illustrates the timing relation between each sliding window 162, 164, 166, 168 and the extended RACH reception window 140. The sliding windows 162, 164, 166, 168 overlap with each other partially. The sliding window number K 169 could be calculated as follows:

[0083] where the index k ranges from 1 to K.

[0084] Referring also to FIG. 4, the gNB saves the data 104 within each sliding window 162, 164, 166, 168 separately and processes the data as follows:

[0085] a) Segment the data 106 within each sliding window into N signals. The duration of each signal is the same as one sequence, which is donated by Tseq. Thus, N is same as sequence repetition number.

[0086] b) Fast Fourier transform 108 each signal to get frequency domain value where k donates the index of the sliding window, n refer to the index of the signal within the sliding window, it ranges from 1 to N.

[0087] c) Correlate each combination with root ZC sequence Xμ 110.

[0088] d) Transmit correlated output is transformed to the time domain by Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) 112. The time domain signal is represented by cμ, k, n (ω, r)

[0089] e) Combine N time domain signals within each sliding window and get the Power Delay Profile (PDP) Pu, k (ω) 114 of the combination of the sliding window n as follows.

[0090] f) If the max PDP value Pu, k, max is larger than a threshold 116, find the preamble ID based on the mapping between the preamble ID and ZC root sequences. Where the Pu, k, max is the max of all PDP point Pu, k (ω) .

[0091] g) As the sliding windows with unabridged preamble sequences (or a cyclic shift of  unabridged preamble sequences) must have the largest Pu, k, max, comparing the max PDP value Pu,k, max between all sliding windows 118 and select the maximum of them, the index of this sliding window is represented by k.

[0092] h) Check the max power point m, which associate with the max PDP value of Pu, k (ω) . Estimate the TA 120 of the sliding window as follows.

[0093] where Lsignal is the length of time domain signal cμ, k, n (κ, r) .

[0094] By extending the RACH reception window, gNB could acquire the whole RACH sequence (s) even though the delay is larger than TCP. By introducing the sliding windows with TCP sliding step, one and only one sliding window contains unabridged preamble sequence (s) without any additional interference. Thus, this reception algorithm could reduce the miss-detection rate of the UE located at where delay larger than TCP.

[0095] Moreover, by comparing the max PDP of all sliding windows, this algorithm support gNB to find out the offset between the starting of RACH reception window and the unabridged preamble sequences (or cyclic shift of preamble sequences) . Thus, this TA estimation algorithm could support the gNB to obtain a proper TA 122 for UE uplink synchronization, which reduce the RACH failure rate of the UE located at where the delay is larger than TCP.

[0096] Method 2: Simplified RACH detection algorithm for PRACH format C2 only

[0097] Table 1 shows the preamble formats defined by 3GPP 38.211. The CP duration of PRACH format C2 is the same with one preamble sequence. Thus, the RACH detection and TA estimation algorithm could be simplified by configuring RACH format C2. Preamble formats for LRA∈ {139, 571, 1151} and ΔfRA=15·2μ kHz where μ∈ {0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6} .

[0098] Table 1

[0099] FIG. 7 shows the PRACH detection and TA estimation process flow that is similar to the process described in connection with FIG. 4. The simplified RACH detection 102 and TA estimation algorithm is given as follows:

[0100] 1) Extend the duration of RACH reception window to monitor the RACH from both the cell edge and the cell centre UE. Thus, the starting time of RACH reception window is TCP 141 is later than the starting time of the RACH occasion 160, and the duration should be longer than Tdelay+N*Tseq-TCP.

[0101] To reduce the complexity of the sliding window segment process, set the duration of RACH reception window as an integer multiple of Tseq. The computational formula is as follows:

[0102] The starting time of the RACH reception window is TCP later than the starting time of the RACH occasion 160. FIG. 8 shows the time relation for PRACH reception window, where t0 donates the starting time of the RACH occasion 160. For format C2, N is 4.

[0103] 2) Segment the receiving data to I signals 106, where the duration of each signal is Tseq.

[0104] 3) Fast Fourier transform 108 each signal to get frequency domain value where i  refer to the index of signal.

[0105] 4) Correlate each combination with root ZC sequence Xμ 110.

[0106] 5) Transmit correlated output to the time domain by Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) 112. The time domain signal is represented by cμ, i (ω, r)

[0107] 6) Set K sliding windows, whose duration is N*Tseq 113. The starting time of the first window is the starting time of the first signal, and the sliding step is the duration of one signal. Where K is K=I-N+1

[0108] 7) Combine the N time domain signals within each sliding window and get the Power Delay Profile (PDP) Pu, k (ω) 114 of a combination of the sliding window as follows:

[0109] where k is the index of the sliding window and it range from 1 to K.

[0110] 8) If the max PDP value Pu, k, max is larger than a threshold 116, find the preamble ID based on the mapping between preamble IDs and ZC root sequences.

[0111] 9) As the sliding windows with unabridged preamble sequences (or a cyclic shift of unabridged preamble sequences) must have the largest Pu, k, max, comparing the max PDP value of all sliding windows 118 and finding the maximum of them, the index of this sliding window is represented by k.

[0112] 10) Check the max power point m of Pk (n) . Estimate the TA 120of the sliding window as follows:

[0113] where Lsignal is the length of one signal.

[0114] For the algorithm which could be used for all kinds of PRACH format, the data is selected by sliding window first, and FFT / Correlation / IFFT operation performs with the signal within each sliding window. The FFT / Correlation / IFFT operation time is given as follows:

[0115] However, the simplified algorithm supports gNB to segment the receiving data immediately. The FFT / Correlation / IFFT operation time is As N is 4 for format C2, the simplified could reduce the complexity when format C2 is configured.

[0116] While the present disclosure has been described with reference to one or more exemplary embodiments, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. In addition, many modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the disclosure without departing from the scope thereof. Therefore, it is intended that the present disclosure not be limited to the particular embodiment (s) disclosed as the best mode contemplated, but that the disclosure will include all embodiments falling within the scope of the appended claims.
