[0041] The term “terminal device” refers to a device of a communication system of a cellular network, such as a 5th generation communication system (5GS) that may be capable of wireless (e.g., radio) communication with a NR-RAN of the 5GS) . By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a wireless communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . Examples of a terminal device include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (for example, remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (for example, a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0042] Currently, for UE not in multiple-Rx simultaneous reception mode, suitable scenarios and conditions are to be studied and, if feasible, methods are to be introduced to reduce frequency range 2-1 (FR2-1) layer 3 (L3) measurement delay by optimizing CSSF (Cell Specific Search Factor) outside gap in carrier aggregation (CA)  / dual connectivity (DC) scenarios, and baseline assumption on number of searchers is 2.

[0043] It is not clear how to reduce the measurement delay by benefiting from multi-Rx reception and in general. The focus should be on reducing the CSSF value. In NR CA and multi-radio (MR) -DC scenarios, the CSSF values are calculated to adjust measurement delay requirements when a UE monitors multiple components carrier (CCs) . As per current specification each CC can be measured in one synchronization signal block (SSB) measurement timing configuration (SMTC) period and if multiple CCs are to be measured the measurement delay will be multiplied by the CSSF factor as in the Table. 9.1.5.1.2-1 from TS 38.133. This is because the UE requirements are currently assuming that the UE need a  separate measurement on each CC at each measurement occasion and it is not possible for the UE get gain from parallel measurements. Therefore, the searcher is assumed to measure one CC at a time, leading to increased measurement time. It is also unclear that how measurement delay can be reduced when multiple carriers are considered.

[0044] In view of the above, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for at least one measurement on multiple cells. In the example embodiments of the present disclosure, a terminal device may perform at least one measurement on multiple cells by receiving multiple signals from the multiple cells within a time window to obtain multiple samples for the multiple cells. The terminal device may further process, within the time window, a first sample from a first cell among the multiple cells, and process, outside the time window, at least one other sample from at least one other cell among the multiple cells. In this way, a measurement delay with carrier aggregation is reduced, and the UE is sharing the same searcher for multiple component carriers.

[0045] FIG. 1A illustrates an example of a network environment 100a in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The environment 100a may be a part of a communication network and comprise a plurality of terminal devices and network devices, such as a terminal device 110, a network device 120. As an example, the terminal device 110 may be implemented as a User Equipment (UE) or an Access Terminal (AT) , and the network device 120 may be implemented as a gNB, or a base station (BS) . The network device 120 may transmit various data to the terminal device 110 via network environment 100.

[0046] To transmit data and / or control information, the terminal device 110 may perform communications with the network device 120. A link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) .

[0047] Although the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 are described in the communication environment 100 of FIG. 1A, embodiments of the present disclosure may equally apply to any other suitable communication devices in communication with one another. That is, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to the exemplary scenarios of FIG. 1A. In this regard, it is noted that although the terminal device is schematically depicted as a mobile phone and the network device 120 is schematically depicted as a satellite in FIG. 1, it is understood that these depictions are exemplary in nature  without suggesting any limitation. In other embodiments, the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may be any other communication devices, for example, any other wireless communication devices.

[0048] In a carrier aggregation (CA) scenario, several cells may be aggregated to provide service to a terminal device (like the terminal device 110 as illustrated in FIG. 1A) . For example, in this case, for the terminal device 110, the cell 121 may play the role of primary cell (PCell) in the CA scenario, and one or more secondary cells (SCells) 123, 125 and 127 may be added as secondary (auxiliary) serving cells in the CA scenario for the terminal device 110.

[0049] In this disclosure, the cell 121 may be referred to CC1, the cell 123 may be referred to CC2, the cell 125 may be referred to CC3, and the cell 127 may be referred to CC4. The cells 121, 123, 125, and 127 may include a primary cell or a secondary cell of the terminal device 110, or may all be secondary cells, or may be a band combination of a primary cell.

[0050] Such SCell (s) 123, 125 and 127 may be provided by the network device 120 which provides the PCell 121, and may be provided by another network device. The SCells 123, 125 and 127 may be provided by the network device 120 or another network device (which is not shown in FIG. 1A) . It is understood that the number of SCell (s) may be more than three. The number of cells is only exemplary, and the terminal device may measure more or fewer cells.

[0051] It is to be understood that the particular number of various communication devices and the particular number of various communication links as shown in FIG. 1A is for illustration purpose only without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 100a may include any suitable number of communication devices and any suitable number of communication links for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. In addition, it should be appreciated that there may be various wireless as well as wireline communications (if needed) among all of the communication devices.

[0052] FIG. 1B illustrates an example 100b of how measurements are performed across multiple carriers related to some embodiments of the present disclosure. In this embodiment, one searcher may be shared for measuring configured component carriers (CCs) , and the UE is measuring four different component carriers. The UE may be only required to measure 1 carrier at a measurement occasion time (for example, SMTC) when performing measurements.

[0053] As a result, the measurement delay is scaled (multiplied) by the number of component carriers the UE is configured with (the same general principle applies also for inter-frequency measurements for example) . It may be captured in the UE requirements with the variable CSSF (Carrier Specific Scaling Factor) . The UE may be monitoring four CCs, and the result is that for the UE to collect two samples for averaging the measurements, a total of eight SMTC periods are required.

[0054] The minimum amount of samples per CC for FR2 measurements of handheld UEs may be 24 for PSS / SSS detection for example (similar number of samples to collect enough samples for a full measurement period) . In this example embodiment, the UE may be configured with four CCs, and a SMTC periodicity may be 40 ms, so a total of 3.84 seconds may be needed for performing a round of measurement on each CC.

[0055] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart of method according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. It would be appreciated that although the process flow 200 has been described referring to FIG. 1A, this process flow 200 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0056] In the process flow 200, a network device 120 may transmit (205) at least one measurement configuration 202 for performing at least one measurement on multiple cells to a terminal device 110. A measurement period or a measurement occasion period for a measurement among the at least one measurement may be determined based on (i) a number of cells the terminal device is to measure in parallel or (ii) processing time for the at least one other sample.

[0057] Upon receiving (210) the measurement configuration 202 from the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may perform (215) at least one measurement on multiple cells. In some embodiments, in order to perform (215) the at least one measurement on the multiple cells, the terminal device 110 may receive multiple signals from the multiple cells within a time window to obtain multiple samples for the multiple cells.

[0058] In performing (215) the at least one measurement on the multiple cells, the terminal device 110 may then process a first sample from a first cell among the multiple cells within the time window. When performing (215) the at least one measurement on the multiple cells, the terminal device 110 may afterwards process at least one other sample from at least one other cell among the multiple cells outside the time window. In some other  embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform the at least one measurement by storing, within the time window, the at least one other sample in a memory of the terminal device 110.

[0059] In some further embodiments, the at least one other sample may be processed serially using a searcher of the terminal device 110, or the at least one other sample may be processed in parallel using multiple searchers of the terminal device 110. The searcher may be an entity or component that perform layer 3 measurement on a CC.

[0060] In some other embodiments, the terminal device may transmit capability information to the network device 120. The capability information may indicate that the terminal device 110 is capable of (i) obtaining and storing the at least one other sample when processing the first sample from the first cell and (ii) processing the at least one other sample after processing the first sample.

[0061] In some example embodiments, the capability information may further indicate a number of the at least one other cell for which the terminal device 110 may be capable of obtaining and storing the at least one other sample when processing the first sample from the first cell.

[0062] In some example embodiments, required processing time for the at least one other sample may be determined based on a maximum number of cells for which the terminal device is capable of obtaining samples within the time window, and time required for processing a sample from a cell. In some further example embodiments, the required processing time may be less than a threshold. The threshold may be determined based on a difference between a measurement occasion period and the time window.

[0063] In some example embodiments, a measurement period of the at least one measurement on the multiple cells may be determined based on a maximum number of cells for which the terminal device is capable of obtaining samples within the time window.

[0064] In some example embodiments, time for the terminal device 110 to identify a cell may be determined based on (i) a maximum number of cells for which the terminal device is capable of obtaining samples within the time window and (ii) time for parallel processing with at least one searcher of the terminal device.

[0065] In some example embodiments, for intra-frequency measurements, a CSSF for the terminal device 110 may be determined based on a maximum number of cells for which the terminal device is capable of obtaining samples within the time window. In some other  example embodiments, for inter-frequency measurements, a CSSF for the terminal device 110 may be determined based on a number of different bands to be measured.

[0066] In some example embodiments, the time window is within a synchronization signal block (SSB) measurement timing configuration (SMTC) window. In some example embodiments, the multiple cells may include at least one cell in carrier aggregation (CA) for the terminal device. The multiple cells may include at least one cell which is part of band combination with a serving cell of the terminal device, such as any carrier configured for measurement. The multiple cells may include at least one cell in an activated state. The multiple cells may include at least one cell in a dormant state, or the multiple cells may include at least one cell in a deactivated state.

[0067] In this way, a method for reduction of measurement delay (e.g. for L3 measurement) under carrier aggregation is proposed. In this method, a UE or the terminal device 110 that may support CA on N CC’s, will receive and sample measurement signals from up to N component carriers simultaneously. While configured with carrier aggregation (at least) , the UE may receive measurement signals from each configured CC and stores the samples for post processing. This may be applied for CC’s with SCell in activated, dormant or deactivated states. Hence, the method is independent from the SCell state.

[0068] Once sampled and stored, during the time until next SMTC occurrence, the UE may be post processing any not yet processed measurement samples from the sampled carriers. It is noted that although the method is explained and based on Component Carriers and CC, this method implemented in this disclosure may also be applied for carriers which are not configured as a CC but is part of UE band combination with the serving cell (s) , such as any carrier configured for measurement.

[0069] FIG. 3 illustrates a process 300 for performing measurement of four target frequencies / carriers according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that, in this disclosure, CA is used as one example explaining how the method could be implemented. The context of this disclosure may be NR. In general, the method may be applied also in other technologies such as upcoming 6G. Additionally, the method may be applied also in some scenarios where certain carriers are not configured as a CC but for example part of band combination with the serving cell, such as any carrier configured for measurement.

[0070] As an example, it is assumed that the UE may use a single searcher for collecting  measurement samples for all the configured (secondary) component carriers (CCs) or target frequencies. Since the UE has CA capability, it may receive signals from all (secondary) CCs (CC1 to CC4) . In some embodiments, the UE may receive the SSB from all CCs but it may not be able to process them using the searcher simultaneously.

[0071] The UE requirements may assume that the UE may need a separate measurement on each CC at each measurement occasion and it is not possible for the UE to get gain from parallel measurements.

[0072] In this example embodiment, the UE may process CC1 302 in real time, while the UE may store the sampled measurement signals related to CC2, CC3 and CC4. After the SMTC window on CC1 ends and samples from CC1 are processed, the UE may process the measurement signals related to CC2 (using the searcher) . After the processing of CC2 is concluded, the UE may proceed with processes CC3, then CC4. Therefore, the component carriers may be sampled and stored and the searcher may be scheduled sequentially for each of the stored CCs, and hence synchronizing to each cell individually.

[0073] This serial processing procedure adds a total delay of 3 times the post processing time, T1, when 4 parallel CCs are considered. If the post processing time is for example 2 ms for each additional CC and 24 SMTC occasions with 40 ms periodicity is considered, the method implemented by this disclosure may results in 966 ms (24*40ms (SMTC periodicity) + 2ms*3) , which is nearly 4 times more efficient than the 3840 ms described in FIG. 1B. As the delay reduction is seen above to be significant it may have impact on the network configuration of the UE.

[0074] In some example embodiments, the network device may extend the SMTC period and thereby reduce the amount of UE measurement occasions. This may reduce the amount of scheduling restrictions and hence increase the UE maximum throughput, while still keeping the required measurement performance on UE side.

[0075] In some other example embodiments, the delay reduction may be embedded or reflected in the requirements for measurement period. Hence, without modifying the SMTC period, the UE may be required to perform the measurements faster and hence reduce the measurement period.

[0076] In some embodiments, the UE may communicate to the network device about its capability to measure multiple CCs in parallel, sample and store measurements from other CCs and how many CCs the UE is capable to measure in parallel or sample and store. The  UE may inform the network device how many measurements may be processed serially after the CC1 is processed.

[0077] With some embodiments of the present disclosure, the required post processing time for other CCs may be [ (Nfmax-1) *Tproc. ] , and it may for example fulfil the following constraint: (Nfmax-1) ) *Tproc<Threshold

[0078] where the threshold may be for example set to (SMTCperiodicity-SMTC window) , Nfmax is the maximum number of target frequencies to be measured in a band, Tproc is the additional time required for post processing of one CC using the searcher.

[0079] During this period of time, the searcher may perform measurement on the concurrent CCs on a band.

[0080] In some embodiments, since the device may have one searcher available for the measurement, the component carriers are sampled and stored and the searcher is scheduled sequentially for each of the stored CCs, and hence synchronizing to each cell individually.

[0081] In some example embodiments, it is a design choice of the UE vendor to know how much sampling memory and how many searchers the device will have available. Therefore, the capability for parallel measurements depends upon for how many carriers the device may store samples and the speed of the parallel measurements depends on the number of searchers that may be used. In some embodiments, it does not make sense to have more searchers than memory to store samples.

[0082] For example, a device having memory to store samples from up to 4 carriers and having one searcher, may need to store the samples for the processing time of each carrier through the searcher.

[0083] In some embodiments, it is assumed that same searcher processing time for a second searcher, and the time data needs to be stored is divided by 2 if both searchers may be used in parallel, each processing 2 carriers in sequence.

[0084] There may be some specification impacts based on some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, some embodiments of this disclosure may require implementation in RAN4 requirements, where the measurement delay would be extended in accordance to the processing time. In the table below, bold and italic texts show how the measurement period for intra-frequency measurement without gaps in FR2 may be updated according to  this disclosure, with new bold and italic texts:

[0085] Additionally, the time to identify a new cell may be updated as: Tidentify_intra_without_index = (TPSS / SSS_sync_intra + TSSB_measurement_period_intra) + (Nfmax –1) * Tpsearch ms

[0086] where Tpsearch is the time to process the searcher for the parallel measurement samples.

[0087] Additionally, the CSSF may also be updated. In one example, the UE is assumed to be able to measure in parallel all CCs on the same band, the CSSF is incremented by 1 for each band, and not for each independent MOs according to the following:

[0088] Also, for the inter-frequency measurements, the CSSF may be scaled by the number of different bands, and on each band, it may be Nfmax CCs. The table in section 9.2 in TS 38.133 can be mirrored to the inter-frequency measurement duration in section 9.3 of TS 38.133.

[0089] FIG. 4 illustrates a flowchart of a method 400 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. UE 410 may be an example of terminal device 110, and PCell 420, SCell 430, SCell 440 may be examples of several cells in Figure 1A. At 402, the UE 410 may transmit an indication about its capabilities for parallel measurements based on memory, and parallel searchers that may be used for parallel measurements, etc.

[0090] At 404, a connection may be re-configured with a measurement configuration for frequency 1. The PCell 420 of the network device may adapt the measurement period according to the number of frequencies the device may measure in parallel. At 406, a connection may be re-configured with a measurement configuration for frequency 2, and measurement period is adapted.

[0092] At 416, the searcher function of the UE 410 may be serialized, depending on number of searchers available for the measurements. At 418, the period until next measurement may be what is adaptable based on UE capability. It is assumed that a period has passed since last measurement the UE 410 may fulfil the reported capability with regard to number of parallel measurements done. At 422, another SMTC window may start.

[0093] At 424, the frequency 1 and frequency 2 may be measured by the UE 410 in parallel from SCell 430. At 426, the frequency 1 and frequency 2 may be measured by the UE 410 in parallel from SCell 440.

[0094] At 428, the searcher function may be serialized, depending on number of searchers available for the measurements. At 432, the period until next measurement may be what is adaptable based on UE capability. It is assumed that a period has passed since last measurement the UE 410 may fulfil the reported capability with regard to number of parallel measurements done.

[0095] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of a method 500 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1A.

[0107] At block 602 the network device 120 may transmit at least one measurement configuration for performing at least one measurement on multiple cells to a terminal device 110. A measurement period or a measurement occasion period for a measurement among the at least one measurement may be determined based on (i) a number of cells the terminal device is to measure in parallel or (ii) processing time for the at least one other sample.

[0108] In some example embodiments, the network device 120 may receive capability information indicating that the terminal device is capable of obtaining and storing at least one other sample from at least one other cell when processing a first sample from a first cell from the terminal device 110.

[0109] In some example embodiments, the capability information may further indicate a number of the at least one other cell for which the terminal device is capable of (i) obtaining and storing the at least one other sample when processing the first sample from the first cell and (ii) processing the at least one other sample after processing the first sample.

[0110] In some example embodiments, required processing time for the at least one other sample may be determined based on a maximum number of cells for which the terminal device is capable of obtaining samples within the time window and time required for processing a sample from a cell. The required processing time may be less than a threshold.

[0111] In some example embodiments, the threshold may be determined based on a difference between a measurement occasion period and a time window for measuring a cell. In some example embodiments, a measurement period of the at least one measurement on the multiple cells may be determined based on a maximum number of cells for which the terminal device is capable of obtaining samples within the time window.

[0112] In some example embodiments, time for the terminal device to identify a cell may be determined based on (i) a maximum number of cells for which the terminal device is capable of obtaining samples within the time window and (ii) time for parallel processing with at least one searcher of the terminal device.
