AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing delay status reporting mechanisms in wireless communication networks face issues such as unclear message formats for logical channel groups with varying remaining time thresholds, inability to signal time values larger than a predetermined threshold, double counting of physical data convergence protocol service data units, and failure to account for packet importance, leading to reporting inconsistencies.

Method used

The solution involves using differential or relative time values to report remaining times exceeding 63ms, adjusting DSR MAC CE formats based on the number of configured time thresholds, and excluding double-counted packets to avoid inconsistencies, while accounting for packet importance levels.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables accurate and efficient delay status reporting, supporting larger time value signaling and minimizing double counting, thereby enhancing scheduling accuracy and reducing packet discarding in wireless communication systems.

Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to triggering, generating, and transmitting delay status information associated for one or more logical channels (LCHs). In accordance with the techniques described herein, a user equipment (UE) may detect a condition that triggers a delay status report (DSR) for a logical channel group (LCG). For example, the UE may determine that a remaining time of at least one uplink data packet associated with the LCG is below a remaining time threshold configured for the LCG. The UE may encode delay status information for the LCG into a DSR medium access control (MAC) control element (CE). The delay status information can include buffer size information and remaining time information. The format and / or content of the DSR MAC CE can vary based on the number of remaining time thresholds configured for the LCG.

[0026] In some wireless communication systems, a user equipment (UE) may be configured to transmit a delay status report (DSR) medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) to a base station when a logical channel (LCH) or logical channel group (LCG) has pending uplink data that is about to expire or be discarded from a buffer of the UE. Upon receiving the DSR MAC CE, the base station can provide an uplink grant or allocate uplink resources for the UE to transmit the pending uplink data. The DSR MAC CE may be triggered when the remaining time left on a discard timer for one or more uplink packets associated with a given LCH or LCG reaches a specified threshold. The DSR MAC CE may include delay status information for each LCH / LCG involved, such as (i) the shortest remaining time left among the uplink packets associated with the LCH / LCG and (ii) the volume or buffer size of these uplink packets.

[0027] Some LCGs may be configured with one remaining time threshold, while other LCGs may be configured with multiple remaining time thresholds. For LCGs with more than one remaining time threshold, the UE may be configured to provide delay status information (such as the buffer size and the shortest remaining time) for each remaining time threshold. As such, the format of the DSR MAC CE may vary based on how many remaining time thresholds are configured for the triggered LCG (s) . A first DSR MAC CE format can be used to convey delay status information for LCGs with a single remaining time threshold, and a second DSR MAC CE format can be used to convey delay status information for LCGs with multiple remaining time thresholds.

[0028] In some cases, however, it may be unclear which message format to use when some LCGs are configured with one remaining time threshold and other LCGs are configured with more than one remaining time threshold. Also, the second DSR MAC CE format may not account for factors like packet importance or protocol data unit (PDU) set associations, which can lead to double counting and reporting inconsistencies. Furthermore, the second DSR MAC CE format may be unable to signal time values larger than a predetermined threshold number, which can be problematic for LCGs with multiple remaining time thresholds configured. For example, in 3GPP TS 38.321 Release 18, the remaining time field of a DSR MAC CE is encoded with 6 bits, which means the remaining time field can indicate up to 64 (e.g., 26) possible values. Assuming each possible value corresponds to one millisecond (ms) , the remaining time field of a Release 18 DSR MAC CE can signal remaining time values between 0ms and 63ms. However, the 6-bit encoding  cannot support remaining time values larger than 63ms, which can be problematic for LCGs with multiple remaining time thresholds configured.

[0029] In accordance with the techniques described herein, a UE can indicate a relative time value larger than the predetermined threshold number (e.g., 63ms as in 3GPP Release 18) by reporting the remaining time value as a delta or differential between the remaining time value and one of the remaining time thresholds. If, for example, an uplink packet would otherwise be included in two different buffer size calculations (due to the remaining time of the uplink packet and a PDU set to which the uplink packet belongs) , the uplink packet can be excluded from one of the buffer size calculations to avoid double counting. If some LCGs are configured with one remaining time threshold and others are configured with multiple remaining time thresholds, the UE can use a variant of the first DSR MAC CE format or the second DSR MAC CE format to convey the mixed delay status information. In some implementations, the base station (to which the DSR MAC CE is directed) may interpret one or more packet importance fields of the DSR MAC CE differently when the UE is unable to identify / report the importance level of the associated uplink packets.

[0030] FIG. 1 illustrates a wireless network 100, according to some implementations. The wireless network 100 includes a UE 102 and a base station 104 connected via one or more channels 106A, 106B across an air interface 108. The UE 102 and base station 104 communicate using a system that supports controls for managing the access of the UE 102 to a network via the base station 104.

[0031] In some implementations, the wireless network 100 may be a Non-Standalone (NSA) network that incorporates Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) communication standards as defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) technical specifications. For example, the wireless network 100 may be a E-UTRA (Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access) -NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) network, or an NR-EUTRA Dual Connectivity (NE-DC) network. In some other implementations, the wireless network 100 may be a Standalone (SA) network that incorporates only 5G NR. Furthermore, other types of communication standards are possible, including future 3GPP systems (e.g., Sixth Generation (6G) ) , Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 technology (e.g., IEEE 802.11a; IEEE 802.11b; IEEE 802.11g; IEEE 802.11-2007; IEEE 802.11n; IEEE 802.11-2012; IEEE 802.11ac; or other present or future developed IEEE 802.11 technologies) , IEEE 802.16 protocols (e.g., WMAN, WiMAX, etc. ) , or the like. While aspects may be described herein using  terminology commonly associated with 5G NR, aspects of the present disclosure can be applied to other systems, such as 3G, 4G, and / or systems subsequent to 5G (e.g., 6G) .

[0032] In the wireless network 100, the UE 102 and any other UE in the system may be, for example, any of laptop computers, smartphones, tablet computers, machine-type devices such as smart meters or specialized devices for healthcare, intelligent transportation systems, or any other wireless device. In the wireless network 100, the base station 104 provides the UE 102 network connectivity to a broader network (not shown) . This UE 102 connectivity is provided via the air interface 108 in a base station service area provided by the base station 104. In some implementations, such a broader network may be a wide area network operated by a cellular network provider, or may be the Internet. Each base station service area associated with the base station 104 is supported by one or more antennas integrated with the base station 104. The service areas can be divided into a number of sectors associated with one or more particular antennas. Such sectors may be physically associated with one or more fixed antennas or may be assigned to a physical area with one or more tunable antennas or antenna settings adjustable in a beamforming process used to direct a signal to a particular sector.

[0033] The UE 102 includes control circuitry 110 coupled with transmit circuitry 112 and receive circuitry 114. The transmit circuitry 112 and receive circuitry 114 may each be coupled with one or more antennas. The control circuitry 110 may include various combinations of application-specific circuitry and baseband circuitry. The transmit circuitry 112 and receive circuitry 114 may be adapted to transmit and receive data, respectively, and may include radio frequency (RF) circuitry and / or front-end module (FEM) circuitry.

[0034] In various implementations, aspects of the transmit circuitry 112, receive circuitry 114, and control circuitry 110 may be integrated in various ways to implement the operations described herein. The control circuitry 110 may be adapted or configured to perform various operations, such as those described elsewhere in this disclosure related to a UE. For instance, the control circuitry 110 can encode a DSR MAC CE with delay status information pertaining to one or more remaining time thresholds configured for an LCG.

[0035] The transmit circuitry 112 can perform various operations described herein. For example, the transmit circuitry 112 can transmit a DSR MAC CE containing delay status information for one or more uplink data packets associated with an LCG. Additionally, the transmit circuitry 112  may transmit using a plurality of multiplexed uplink physical channels. The plurality of uplink physical channels may be multiplexed, e.g., according to time division multiplexing (TDM) or frequency division multiplexing (FDM) along with carrier aggregation. The transmit circuitry 112 may be configured to receive block data from the control circuitry 110 for transmission across the air interface 108.

[0036] The receive circuitry 114 can perform various operations described herein. For instance, the receive circuitry 114 can receive control signaling that configures one or more remaining time thresholds to use for triggering and / or reporting delay status information for a particular LCG. Additionally, the receive circuitry 114 may receive a plurality of multiplexed downlink physical channels from the air interface 108 and relay the physical channels to the control circuitry 110. The plurality of downlink physical channels may be multiplexed, e.g., according to TDM or FDM along with carrier aggregation. The transmit circuitry 112 and the receive circuitry 114 may transmit and receive, respectively, both control data and content data (e.g., messages, images, video, etc. ) structured within data blocks that are carried by the physical channels.

[0037] FIG. 1 also illustrates the base station 104. In some implementations, the base station 104 may be a 5G radio access network (RAN) , a next generation RAN, a E-UTRAN, a non-terrestrial cell, or a legacy RAN, such as a UTRAN. As used herein, the term “5G RAN” or the like may refer to the base station 104 that operates in an NR or 5G wireless network 100, and the term “E-UTRAN” or the like may refer to a base station 104 that operates in an LTE or 4G wireless network 100. The UE 102 utilizes connections (or channels) 106A, 106B, each of which includes a physical communications interface or layer.

[0038] The base station 104 circuitry may include control circuitry 116 coupled with transmit circuitry 118 and receive circuitry 120. The transmit circuitry 118 and receive circuitry 120 may each be coupled with one or more antennas that may be used to enable communications via the air interface 108. The transmit circuitry 118 and receive circuitry 120 may be adapted to transmit and receive data, respectively, to any UE connected to the base station 104. The receive circuitry 120 may receive a plurality of uplink physical channels from one or more UEs, including the UE 102.

[0039] In FIG. 1, the one or more channels 106A, 106B are illustrated as an air interface to enable communicative coupling, and can be consistent with cellular communications protocols, such as a UMTS protocol, a 3GPP LTE protocol, an Advanced long term evolution (LTE-A) protocol, a  LTE-based access to unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) , a 5G protocol, a NR protocol, an NR-based access to unlicensed spectrum (NR-U) protocol, and / or any other communications protocol (s) . In implementations, the UE 102 may directly exchange communication data via a ProSe interface. The ProSe interface may alternatively be referred to as a sidelink (SL) interface and may include one or more logical channels, including but not limited to a Physical Sidelink Control Channel (PSCCH) , a Physical Sidelink Discovery Channel (PSDCH) , and a Physical Sidelink Broadcast Channel (PSBCH) .

[0040] As described herein, the UE 102 can transmit delay status information (e.g., buffer size information and remaining time information) to the base station 104 by means of a DSR MAC CE. The UE 102 may construct the DSR MAC CE using a first DSR MAC CE format (shown in FIG. 8) compatible with LCGs that have one remaining time threshold configured or a second DSR MAC CE format (shown in FIG. 9) compatible with LCGs that have multiple remaining time thresholds configured. However, the UE 102 may be unable to signal remaining time values larger than 63ms using the second DSR MAC CE format, which can be problematic considering that some LCGs may be configured with multiple remaining time thresholds.

[0041] Existing delay status reporting mechanisms can also lead to “double counting” some physical data convergence protocol (PDCP) service data units (SDUs) during DSR buffer size calculations for different remaining time thresholds, e.g. due to a PDU set Discarding configuration of the UE 102. Additionally, it may be unclear which DSR MAC CE format to use when some LCGs are configured with one remaining time threshold and other LCGs are configured with multiple remaining time thresholds. Also, existing delay status reporting mechanisms may not account for scenarios where the second DSR MAC CE format includes an importance field but the UE 102 is unable to identify the importance level of packets to be reported in the DSR.

[0042] In accordance with aspects of the present disclosure, the UE 102 can indicate a relative time value larger than 63ms by reporting the remaining time value as a delta or differential between the relative time value and one of the remaining time thresholds, as shown and described with reference to FIG. 5. If, for example, an uplink packet would otherwise be included in two different buffer size calculations (due to the remaining time of the uplink packet and a PDU set associated with the uplink packet) , the uplink packet can be excluded from one of the buffer size calculations  to avoid double counting, as shown and described with reference to FIG. 6. If some LCGs are configured with one remaining time threshold and others are configured with multiple remaining time thresholds, the UE 102 can use a variant of the first DSR MAC CE format or the second DSR MAC CE format to convey the mixed delay status information, as shown and described with reference to FIG. 7. In some implementations, the base station 104 may interpret one or more packet importance fields of the DSR MAC CE differently when the UE 102 is unable to identify / report the importance level of the associated uplink packets, as shown and described with reference to FIG. 11.

[0043] FIG. 2 illustrates an example resource diagram 200, according to some implementations. The resource diagram 200 includes a PDU set 202a, a PDU set 202b, and a PDU set 202c (including a PDU 204a) . In the example resource diagram 200 of FIG. 2, a recipient of the PDU set 202c (such as the base station 104) may discard all of the PDUs 204 in the PDU set 202c if at least one of the PDUs 204 (such as the PDU 204a) is not successfully received / decoded (e.g., discarded) .

[0044] Some extended reality (XR) services can operate on the basis of a PDU set 202, which includes multiple packets (e.g., IP packets) or PDUs 204 carrying the payload of one unit of information generated at the application level (e.g., frames or video slices for XR services) . The quality of service (QoS) parameters for a PDU set 202 (per QoS flow) include PDU set delay budget (PSDB) , PDU set error rate (PSER) , and PDU set integrated handling information (PSIHI) , which indicates whether all PDUs 204 of the PDU set 202 are needed for the usage of the PDU set 202 by the application layer.

[0045] Each PDU set 202 may be associated with the following information: a PDU set sequence number; an indication of an end PDU 204 of the PDU set 202; a PDU sequence number within a PDU set 202; a PDU set size in bytes; and a PDU set importance (PSI) , which identifies the relative importance of a PDU set 202 compared to other PDU sets 202 within the same QoS Flow.

[0046] In some examples, a discard timer may be configured per PDU 204 (rather than per PDU set 202) . In such cases, the discard timers for different PDUs 204 in the same PDU set 202 may start or expire at different times because the arrival time of PDUs 204 in a PDU set 202 may be different. Based on the QoS parameter of PSIHI, the base station 104 may configure the UE 102  (per PDCP entity) to directly discard all PDUs 204 in a PDU set 202 (such as the PDU set 202c) when one of the PDUs 204 (such as the PDU 204a) in the PDU set 202 is lost or discarded.

[0047] PSIHI indicates whether all PDUs 204 of the PDU set 202 are needed for the usage of the PDU set 202 by the application layer. If PSIHI is set to TRUE, the UE 102 can be configured to refrain from transmitting other PDUs 204 of a PDU set 202 if one of the PDUs 204 has already been discarded. In such cases, the whole PDU set 202 can be discarded to save power and reduce signaling overhead.

[0048] This UE behavior is enabled by the radio resource control (RRC) parameter pdu-SetDiscard in the information element (IE) of pdcp-Config. If pdu-SetDiscard is set to true, the UE performs PDU set-based discarding for this PDCP entity. The pdu-SetDiscard field may be configured for a particular DRB.

[0049] FIG. 3 illustrates an example communication timeline 300, according to some implementations. In the example communication timeline 300 of FIG. 3, the UE 102 may detect (306) a trigger event for an LCG and transmit (308) a DSR including delay status information for one or more uplink data packets (also referred to as PDUs) associated with the LCG.

[0050] Delay status reporting can assist delay-aware scheduling for XR and minimize packet discarding. A DSR MAC CE is triggered (306) when the remaining time 312 until expiry (310) of the discard timer for a packet associated with an LCH satisfies a remaining time threshold. The discard timer starts (304) when the packet arrives in a buffer of the UE 102. The DSR indicates the shortest remaining time until discard timer expiry (the reference point is the start of the UL-SCH for the DSR MAC CE) and the data volume (e.g., buffer size) for packets with remaining time satisfying the remaining time threshold. An example DSR MAC CE structure is shown in FIG. 8. This MAC CE format allows the UE 102 to report the delay-critical data volume per LCG. The calculation of delay critical data volume can be based on Clause 5.15 of 3GPP TS 38.323 V18.1.0) . The DSR MAC CE format also includes a buffer size table (BT) indicator field.

[0051] FIG. 4 illustrates an example buffer 400 associated with an LCH or LCG, according to some implementations. The buffer 400 includes a first buffer portion 402, a second buffer portion 404, a third buffer portion 406, and a fourth buffer portion 408. Each portion of the buffer 400  may correspond to a time range defined by one or more remaining time intervals configured for the LCH or LCG.

[0052] In some implementations, a DSR can be modified to include additional information, such as multiple sets of remaining time values, buffer size values, and packet importance values. The DSR can include more information about delay-critical data and / or information about non-delay critical data. Some DSR formats support multiple pairs of remaining time and buffer size values per LCG.

[0053] If multiple remaining time thresholds are configured for an LCH / LCG (T0, T1, …Tn) , the UE 102 calculates and reports the buffer size of PDCP SDU (s) with remaining time (s) within each remaining time range defined by two remaining time values / thresholds. For example, the buffer portion 408 corresponds to a time range between 0 and T0, the buffer portion 406 corresponds to a time range between T0 and T1, the buffer portion 404 corresponds to a time range between T1 and T2, and the buffer portion 402 covers the time range following T2.

[0054] The UE can also report the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs in each reported buffer size portion. If three remaining time thresholds (T0, T1, and T2) are configured for an LCH / LCG (where T2 > T1 > T0 > 0) , the UE may construct the DSR MAC CE as follows. For the buffer portion 402, a DSR is not required, as all PDCP SDUs in the buffer portion 402 have remaining time (s) larger than T2 (e.g., the largest remaining time threshold) . The DSR information reported for the buffer portion 404 may include the buffer size and the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs with remaining time (s) in a range R2 between T1 and T2. The DSR information reported for the buffer portion 406 may include the buffer size and the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs with remaining time (s) in a range R1 between T0 and T1. The DSR information reported for the buffer portion 408 may include the buffer size and the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs with remaining time (s) in a range R0 below T0.

[0055] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 500, according to some implementations. Operations of the method 500 can be performed by a wireless device, such as the UE 102 shown and described with reference to FIG. 1. The method 500 illustrates an example of how the UE 102 can use differential values to encode remaining time values larger than 63 ms.

[0056] As described above with reference to FIG. 4, an LCH / LCG can be configured with n+1 remaining time thresholds (T0, T1, T2, …Tn) . In a DSR for a particular LCG, the UE 102 may report the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs with remaining times in a range below T0 (denoted as R0) , the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs with remaining times in a range between T0 and T1 (denoted as R1) , the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs with remaining times in a range between T1 and T2 (denoted as R2) , and the shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs with remaining times between Tn-1 and Tn (denoted as Rn) .

[0057] For R0, the UE 102 can encode the shortest remaining time as an absolute remaining time value. For R1, the UE 102 can encode the shortest remaining time as the difference between R1 and T0 (where R1 > T0) or the difference between R1 and T1 (where R1 < T1) . Likewise, for R2, the UE 102 can encode the shortest remaining time as the difference between R2 and T1 (where R2 > T1) or the difference between R2 and T2 (where R2 < T2) .

[0058] Once the base station 104 receives the DSR, the base station 104 can determine the shortest remaining time values by adding or subtracting the reported value from a configured threshold. Using differential values may support reporting of larger remaining time values without having to use a larger number of bits for the remaining time value field in the DSR MAC CE. In some implementations, this field could be less than 6 bits.

[0059] In some embodiments, the UE 102 may encode all remaining times with respect to a common threshold (e.g. R1-T0, R2-T0) . In some embodiments, the UE 102 can encode one or more of the remaining times by taking the difference between a remaining time and the middle point of two remaining time thresholds (e.g., (T0+T1)  / 2) . One bit can be used to indicate whether the difference is positive or negative.

[0060] In the example method 500 of FIG. 5, the UE 102 constructs (502) a DSR MAC CE with remaining time information corresponding to multiple remaining time thresholds per LCG. The UE 102 measures (504) a shortest remaining time among PDCP SDUs in an LCG with remaining times in a range defined by two remaining time thresholds / values. The UE 102 determines (506) whether the lower edge of the range defined by the smallest remaining time threshold is configured for the LCG or if the lower edge is equal to zero. In other words, the UE 102 determines if the shortest remaining time to be measured is for PDCP SDUs within the remaining time range defined by 0 and T0, as described with reference to Figure 4.

[0061] If the lower edge is not zero, the UE 102 encodes (508) a differential value of the measured shortest remaining time with respect to the lower edge of the range in the DSR MAC CE. Alternatively, if the lower edge is zero, the UE 102 encodes (510) an absolute value of the measured shortest remaining time in the DSR MAC CE.

[0062] FIG. 6 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 600, according to some implementations. Operations of the method 600 can be performed by a wireless device, such as the UE 102 shown and described with reference to FIG. 1. The method 600 illustrates how the UE 102 can avoid double counting packets in DSR buffer size calculations for a second remaining time threshold by excluding packets that were previously considered / included in buffer size calculation for a first remaining time threshold.

[0063] As described above with reference to FIG. 4, an LCH / LCG can be configured with n+1 Remaining Time thresholds (T0, T1, T2, …Tn) . In a DSR for a particular LCG, the UE 102 may report the buffer size of PDCP SDUs with remaining times below T0 (denoted as BS0) , the buffer size of PDCP SDUs with remaining times between T0 and T1 (denoted as BS1) , the buffer size of PDCP SDUs with remaining times between T1 and T2 (denoted as BS2) , the buffer size of PDCP SDUs with remaining times between Tn-1 and Tn (denoted as BSn) , and so on.

[0064] If a PDCP SDU has been included in a buffer size corresponding to a first remaining time threshold (e.g., due to a PDU set discarding configuration of the UE 102) , the PDCP SDU should not be included in a buffer size corresponding to a second remaining time threshold, even if the remaining time of the PDCP SDU satisfies the second remaining time threshold. For example, if a first PDCP SDU has a remaining time that satisfies the second remaining time threshold, but the first PDCP SDU also belongs to the same PDU Set as a second PDCP SDU whose remaining time satisfies the first remaining time threshold, the UE 102 may already include the first PDCP SDU into the buffer size for the report corresponding to the first remaining time threshold, since the first PDCP SDU and the second PDCP SDU are considered to have the same delay-criticality. Thus, the UE 102 should not also include the first PDCP SDU in the buffer size corresponding to the second remaining time threshold, even though the remaining time of the first PDCP SDU satisfies the second remaining time threshold.

[0065] When the UE 102 is calculating the buffer size for a first remaining time threshold, the UE may exclude PDCP SDUs that have been included (or will be included) in the buffer size  calculation corresponding to a second remaining time threshold, even if the remaining time (s) of these PDCP SDUs are within a range defined by the second remaining time threshold.

[0066] In accordance with the techniques described herein, the UE 102 calculates a first buffer size (corresponding to a first remaining time threshold) based on the identification of delay critical PDCP SDUs. The PDCP SDUs that belong to a PDU set with at least one packet satisfying the first remaining time threshold can be considered delay critical PDCP SDUs too.

[0067] When calculating a second buffer size (corresponding to a second remaining time threshold) , the UE 102 can exclude the PDCP SDUs that were already included / considered during the calculation of the first buffer size, even if their remaining times satisfy the second remaining time threshold.

[0068] In the example method 600 of FIG. 6, the UE 102 identifies (602) a PDCP SDU with a remaining time satisfying a remaining time threshold to calculate a buffer size for a DSR. The UE 102 determines (604) whether the PDCP SDU has been included in the buffer size calculation for a different remaining time threshold. If the PDCP SDU has not been included in another buffer size calculation, the UE 102 includes (606) the identified PDCP SDU in the buffer size calculation for the current remaining time threshold. Otherwise, the UE 102 refrains (608) from including the identified PDCP SDU in the buffer size calculation for the current remaining time threshold.

[0069] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 700, according to some implementations. Operations of the method 700 can be performed by a wireless device, such as the UE 102 shown and described with reference to FIG. 1. The method 700 illustrates an example of how the UE 102 can select a DSR MAC CE format based on the number of remaining time thresholds configured for the triggered LCG (s) .

[0070] When at least two LCGs are configured for the UE 102, a scenario can arise where some LCGs are configured with one remaining time threshold and other LCGs are configured with multiple remaining time thresholds. In such cases, the UE 102 can select an appropriate DSR MAC CE format according to the following rules.

[0071] If all the LCHs that triggered the DSR are in LCGs configured with one remaining time threshold, the MAC entity of the UE 102 selects a first DSR MAC CE format (shown in FIG. 8) . If at least one LCH that triggers DSR is in an LCG configured with multiple remaining time  thresholds, the MAC entity of the UE 102 selects a second DSR MAC CE format (shown in FIG. 9) .

[0072] In some embodiments, when the MAC entity of the UE 102 uses the first DSR MAC CE format (triggered by LCGs configured with one remaining time threshold) , the MAC entity can exclude remaining time information and buffer size information for LCGs configured with multiple remaining time thresholds. Additionally, or alternatively, when the MAC entity uses the second DSR MAC CE format (triggered by LCGs configured with multiple remaining time thresholds) , the MAC entity can exclude remaining time information and buffer size information for the LCGs configured with one remaining time threshold.

[0073] In other embodiments, when the MAC entity uses the first DSR MAC CE format, the MAC entity can include remaining time information and buffer size information for LCGs configured with multiple remaining time thresholds, for example by selectively taking only one of the their configured remaining time threshold into account, such as the lowest or the highest remaining time threshold. In some embodiments, the network may configure / indicate which remaining time threshold the MAC entity should use (among the multiple configured remaining time thresholds) to accommodate the first DSR MAC CE. In other words, the MAC entity may consider the LCG as configured with one remaining time threshold for purposes of delay status reporting.

[0074] Similarly, when the MAC entity selects the second DSR MAC CE format, the MAC entity can include remaining time information and buffer size information for the LCGs configured with one remaining time threshold by setting the buffer size and / or remaining time fields for other remaining time thresholds to zero in the DSR MAC CE.

[0075] If an LCH / LCG configured with multiple remaining time thresholds triggers a DSR, the pending DSR can be cancelled if and only if the DSR is transmitted using the second DSR MAC CE format. If the DSR is generated / transmitted using the first DSR MAC CE format, the MAC entity of the UE 102 may refrain from canceling the pending DSR.

[0076] In some implementations, the network may configure the UE 102 to use the second DSR MAC CE format or the first DSR MAC CE format, regardless of which LCG (s) trigger the DSR. The network can also dynamically instruct the UE 102 to switch between the second DSR MAC  CE format (shown in FIG. 9) and the first DSR MAC CE (shown in FIG. 8) regardless of which LCG(s) trigger the DSR.

[0077] In some examples, the UE 102 can report DSRs corresponding to different remaining time thresholds of an LCG using separate DSR MAC CEs. For example, a first DSR corresponding to a first threshold can be reported using the first DSR MAC CE format, while DSR (s) corresponding to other thresholds can be reported using the second DSR MAC CE format.

[0078] In the example method 700 of FIG. 7, the UE 102 determines (702) that at least one LCH / LCG has triggered a DSR. The UE 102 determines (704) whether any pending DSRs were triggered by an LCH / LCG configured with multiple remaining time thresholds. If not, the UE 102 generates (706) a DSR MAC CE based on the second DSR MAC CE format. Otherwise, the UE 102 generates (708) a DSR MAC CE based on the first DSR MAC CE format.

[0079] FIG. 8 illustrates an example DSR MAC CE format 800, according to some implementations. The DSR MAC CE format 800 includes an LCGi field 802 that indicates the presence of delay information (e.g., the remaining time and buffer size fields) for the LCG i. A value of 1 indicates that the delay information for LCG i is being reported. A value of 0 indicates that delay information for the LCG i is not being reported.

[0080] The DSR MAC CE format 800 also includes a remaining time field 804, which indicates the shortest remaining time value of PDCP discardTimer among all PDCP SDUs buffered for an LCG, at the time of the first symbol of the first PUSCH transmission that includes this DSR MAC CE.The length of this field is 6 bits. The value r in this field indicates a remaining time within the range of (r, r + 1] msec.

[0081] The DSR MAC CE format 800 also includes a BT field that is present only if the corresponding LCG is configured with additionalBSR-TableAllowed; otherwise, this field is reserved. If present, the BT field indicates which buffer sizes are used to set the value of the Buffer Size field.

[0082] The DSR MAC CE format 800 also includes a buffer size field 806, which indicates the total amount of delay-critical UL data for an LCG according to data volume calculation procedures specified for the associated RLC and PDCP entities, respectively, after the MAC PDU has been built. If the corresponding LCG is configured with additionalBSR-TableAllowed and the amount  of delay-critical UL data for an LCG is within the buffer sizes specified, the MAC entity uses a first set of configured buffer sizes to set the value of this field; otherwise, the MAC entity uses a second set of configured buffer sizes. This field is indicated as a number of bytes. The length of this field is 8 bits.

[0083] The remaining time field 804, the BT field, and the buffer size field 806 for an LCG are reported in two consecutive octets. These three fields for different LCGs are included in a DSR MAC CE in ascending order based on the LCGi. The remaining time field 804 of the DSR MAC CE format 800 is encoded with 6 bits, which means that any remaining time between 0ms and 63ms can be reported. However, the DSR MAC CE format 800 may not support remaining time values larger than 63ms. When multiple remaining time thresholds are configured for an LCG, it is more likely that a remaining time value larger than 63ms will be reported in the DSR MAC CE (e.g., if the highest remaining time threshold is larger than 63ms) .

[0084] For the purpose of MAC delay status reporting, the transmitting PDCP entity considers the following as delay-critical PDCP data volume: the delay-critical PDCP SDUs for which no PDCP Data PDUs have been constructed; the PDCP Data PDUs that include the delay-critical PDCP SDUs and have not been submitted to lower layers; the PDCP Control PDUs; and for acknowledge mode (AM) DRBs, the PDCP SDUs to be retransmitted.

[0085] If a PDCP SDU becomes a delay-critical PDCP SDU and the corresponding PDCP Data PDU has already been submitted to lower layers, the delay-critical indication for the PDCP Data PDU is provided to lower layers. If pdu-SetDiscard is not configured, a PDCP SDU for which the remaining time until discardTimer expiry is less than the remainingTimeThreshold. If pdu-SetDiscard is configured, a PDCP SDU belonging to a PDU set of which at least one PDCP SDU has the remaining time until discardTimer expiry less than the remainingTimeThreshold.

[0086] With the above constraints, some PDCP SDUs are considered delay-critical (and hence included in the buffer size to be reported in DSR) even if their remaining time is still larger than a threshold, e.g. if they belong to a PDU set that has at least one delay-critical packet.

[0087] FIG. 9 illustrates an example DSR MAC CE format 900, according to some implementations. The DSR MAC CE format 900 (also referred to as a second DSR MAC CE format) includes a bitmap 902, a DSR 904a, a DSR 904b, and a DSR 904c. The DSRs 904a, 904b,  and 904c may correspond to different LCGs. The DSR MAC CE format 900 allows the UE 102 to report delay status information for LCGs with multiple remaining time thresholds configured.

[0088] The bitmap 902 indicates which LCGs are concerned in this DSR MAC CE. The DSRs 904 correspond to the one or more LCGs identified in the bitmap 902. Each DSR 904 includes a respective number of bytes, depending on how many remaining time thresholds are configured (or activated) for the corresponding LCG. In the example DSR MAC CE format 900 of FIG. 9, the DSR 904a includes N bytes, the DSR 904b includes K bytes, and the DSR 904c includes M bytes. The values of N, K, and M can be same or different.

[0089] Different DSR MAC CE formats can be used for different scenarios. The DSR MAC CE format 800 depicted in FIG. 8 includes a single pair of remaining time and buffer size values per LCG, and DSRs for multiple LCGs can be reported in one MAC CE. The DSR MAC CE format 900 depicted in FIG. 9 includes multiple pairs of remaining time and buffer size values per LCG. The number of LCGs that can be reported in one MAC CE can vary. In addition, the LCGs / LCHs may be configured with different numbers of remaining time thresholds. For example, some LCGs may be configured with one remaining time threshold, and other LCGs may be configured with multiple remaining time thresholds.

[0090] In some implementations, however, it may be unclear if the UE 102 can report DSR triggered by LCHs / LCGs configured with one remaining time threshold using the DSR MAC CE format 900. Likewise, it may be unclear if the UE 102 can report DSR triggered by LCHs / LCGs configured with multiple remaining time thresholds using the DSR MAC CE format 800. The UE behaviors and rules disclosed herein can help support co-existence between these DSR MAC CE formats for LCGs / LCHs configured with different numbers of remaining time thresholds.

[0091] FIG. 10 illustrates an example DSR MAC CE format 1000, according to some implementations. The DSR MAC CE format 1000 may implement one or more aspects of the DSR MAC CE format 900, as shown and described with reference to FIG. 9. The DSR MAC CE format 1000 includes a DSR 1004a and a DSR 1004b. The DSR 1004a includes an information field 1006a, and the DSR 1004b includes an information field 1006b. The DSR MAC CE structure depicted in FIG. 10 may support DSRs of variable sizes.

[0092] In the DSR 1004 for each LCG, there may be an information field 1006 to indicate how the DSR 1004 was formulated / constructed. For example, this field may indicate (i) how many of the remaining time thresholds configured for this LCG were applied for buffer size calculations in this DSR and / or (ii) which of the configured remaining time thresholds for this LCG were applied for buffer size calculation in this DSR. That is, all remaining time thresholds configured for a LCG do not need to be considered / reported in the DSR; the UE may have some flexibility to determine / select a subset of configured remaining time thresholds that are to be considered / reported in the DSR under some conditions. This information field 1006 may have a bitmap structure (such as a bitmap of 3 bits) , where each bit represents a remaining time threshold. A value of 0 means the report for the corresponding threshold is not included in the DSR, while a value of 1 means the report for the corresponding threshold is include in the DSR. For example, a value of 101 means the DSR 1004 includes delay status information for the first remaining time threshold and the third remaining time threshold, but not the second remaining time threshold. The information field 1006 (that indicates which remaining time threshold is applied) is not limited to the DSR MAC CE format 1000 described in FIG. 10; such information could be conveyed using any prospective DSR format.

[0093] This is useful for cases where the UE 102 has limited resources available to send the DSR, such that only some information corresponding to a subset of thresholds configured for a LCG can be reported. For example, the information field 1006 can be helpful when a DSR is triggered by availability of padding bits in an uplink resource, but the available padding bits are insufficient to accommodate the complete DSR. Also, if an LCG does not have data with remaining time (s) in a range defined by one or more remaining time threshold (s) (e.g., the buffer size of data with remaining time in the range between T0 and T1 is 0) , the UE 102 can omit DSR information for the corresponding threshold (s) for this LCG. This allows the UE 102 to skip reporting of delay information for some thresholds when appropriate, which reduces signaling overhead.

[0094] FIG. 11 illustrates an example DSR MAC CE format 1100, according to some implementations. The DSR MAC CE format 1100 may implement one or more aspects of the DSR MAC CE format 900 and / or the DSR MAC CE format 1000, as shown and described with reference to FIGs. 9 and 10. The DSR MAC CE format 1100 includes a DSR 1104a for a first  LCG and a DSR 1104b for a second LCG. The DSR 1104a includes an importance field 1106a, while the DSR 1104b includes an importance field 1106b and an importance field 1106c.

[0095] When using the DSR MAC CE format 1100, the DSR 1104 for a particular LCG includes at least one field to indicate packet importance. Some DSRs (such as the DSR 1104a) include one importance field 1106 to indicate the importance level of the reported data volume (e.g. if the reported data volume includes any data from a PDU set that is considered high or low importance) . Other DSRs (such as the DSR 1104b) include multiple importance fields 1106 that indicate the importance level of the reported data volumes portions corresponding to multiple remaining time thresholds (e.g. if a reported data volume portion corresponding to a specific remaining time threshold includes any data from a PDU set that is considered high or low importance.

[0096] In many cases, however, the UE 102 cannot identify the importance of data for one or more QoS flows. For example, the UE 102 may not have the capability to identify PDU set and / or PDU set importance. Additionally, or alternatively, the application being executed by the UE 102 may not provide any importance information (e.g., in the RTP header) . In such cases, if PDU set importance is provided in a DSR MAC CE, it may be unclear how the UE 102 should set the bits when the UE 102 is unable to identify the packet importance for the corresponding traffic flow.

[0097] In some examples, the UE 102 may be configured to notify the base station 104 of whether the UE 102 is able to identify PSI for a QoS flow using the following parameter in UE assistance Information (UAI) : psiIdentification indicates whether the UE 102 is able to identify PSI (s) for the QoS flow. This field is set to true if pduSetIdentification is also set to true (or was set to true previously for the same QoS flow) . If set to true, the UE 102 is able to identify PSI (s) for the associated QoS flow, otherwise, the UE 102 is not able to do so. Before receiving this indication, the network assumes the value is set to false.

[0098] In accordance with the techniques described herein, when the DSR (e.g. for a data volume portion) for an LCG does not correspond to (or does not include) a QoS flow which the UE can identify the data importance, the UE 102 may operate according to one or more of the following rules. In some implementations, the UE 102 considers the DSR MAC CE importance fields 1106 as Reserved Bits. In other implementations, the UE 102 may always indicate a default importance level in the DSR MAC CE importance fields 1106 (e.g. always indicate “High Importance” or always indicate “Low Importance” ) . In other implementations, the UE 102 may be configured to  set all bits in the DSR MAC CE importance fields 1106 to a specified value (0 or 1) . In other implementations, the UE 102 may autonomously determine how the DSR MAC CE importance fields 1106 are handled.

[0099] In a similar manner, the base station 104 may be configured to process the importance fields 1106 according to one or more of the following rules. In some implementations, the base station 104 always considers the importance fields 1106 of the received DSR MAC CE as reserved bits until the UE 102 has notified the base station 104 that the UE 102 is able to identify PDU set importance for the corresponding QoS flow (e.g., via psiIdentification in the UE Assistance Information or UAI message) . In other implementations, the base station 104 may be configured to disregard the importance fields 1106 of the received DSR MAC CE until the UE 102 has notified the base station 104 that the UE 102 is able to identify PDU set importance for the corresponding QoS flow (e.g., via psiIdentification in the UAI) .

[0100] In some examples, when the network configures the UE 102 to use the second DSR MAC CE format, the network may signal whether to apply importance fields 1106 in the DSR for one or more LCGs. For example, if the network knows the UE 102 is unable to identify importance for a particular QoS flow, the network may configure the UE 102 to always consider the DSR MAC CE importance fields 1106 for the LCG corresponding to this QoS flow as reserved bits.

[0101] FIG. 12 illustrates an example signaling diagram 1200, according to some implementations. The signaling diagram 1200 may implement or be implemented by one or more aspects of the wireless network 100. For example, the signaling diagram 1200 includes a UE 1202, which may be an example of the UE 102 depicted in FIG. 1. Likewise, the signaling diagram 1200 includes a base station 1204, which may be an example of the base station 104 depicted in FIG. 1. In the following description of the signaling diagram 1200, operations between the UE 1202 and the base station 1204 can be added, omitted, or performed in a different order (with respect to the exemplary order shown in FIG. 12) .

[0102] The signaling diagram 1200 illustrates a method for dynamically activating, deactivating, and / or reconfiguring one or more remaining time thresholds for an LCG. The base station 1204 may pre-configure (1206) multiple remaining time thresholds for an LCG / LCH (e.g., via RRC signaling) . The base station 104 may dynamically activate and / or deactivate (1208) one or more  of the multiple remaining time thresholds via a MAC CE or downlink control information (DCI) . The activated / deactivated thresholds may pertain to DSR triggering, DSR reporting, or both.

[0103] In some implementations, the UE 1202 selectively triggers DSR (1210) based on threshold (s) that are active. For example, a DSR can be triggered by a LCH when any PDCP SDU associated with the LCH has a remaining time that is below the lowest activated remaining time threshold. Once triggered, the UE 1202 can encode (1212) delay status information for the LCH into a DSR MAC CE.

[0104] In some implementations, the UE 1202 selectively reports DSR (1214) based on threshold (s) that are active. For example, delay status information for active remaining time thresholds may be reported in the DSR MAC CE, while delay status information for inactive / deactivated remaining time thresholds can be omitted from the DSR MAC CE.

[0105] If all LCGs / LCHs have one active remaining time threshold, the UE 1202 can use a first MAC CE format (e.g., the DSR MAC CE format 800 shown and described with reference to FIG. 8) to report DSR for these LCGs. In contrast, the UE 1202 can use second DSR MAC CE format (such as the DSR MAC CE format 900 shown and described with reference to FIG. 9) if at least one LCG has more than one activated remaining time threshold.

[0106] The techniques described herein support DSR triggering based on multiple remaining time thresholds. If one remaining time threshold is configured or activated per LCG, this threshold is used for both DSR triggering and buffer size reporting in the DSR MAC CE. In other cases, multiple remaining time thresholds may be configured or activated per LCG, for the purpose of buffer size reporting in the DSR MAC CE. However, it may be unclear how these thresholds affect DSR triggering.

[0107] In accordance with aspects of the present disclosure, the base station 104 may explicitly configure (1206) or indicate which of the multiple remaining time thresholds to use for DSR triggering. In some implementations, the lowest remaining time threshold among the multiple remaining time thresholds configured or activated for an LCG can be used for DSR triggering. In other implementations, the highest remaining time threshold among the multiple remaining time thresholds configured or activated for the LCG can be used for DSR triggering. In other implementations, the remaining time threshold used for DSR triggering can be independent (e.g.,  separate) from the multiple remaining time thresholds configured activated for the LCG. For example, the UE 1202 may be configured with 5 thresholds in total: one threshold for DSR triggering, and four thresholds for buffer size calculations.

[0108] In any of the foregoing options, the remaining time threshold for DSR triggering can be dynamically switched (1208) among the multiple remaining time thresholds configured for the LCG. This switching can be instructed by the base station 1204 (e.g., via a MAC CE or DCI) , or determined by the UE 1202.
