AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing delay status report (DSR) mechanisms in telecommunication systems lack sufficient granularity and accuracy in reporting buffer status, leading to suboptimal scheduling decisions due to coarse data and potential errors in deriving remaining time information, and require packet-level prioritization within logical channels, which is undesirable.

Method used

Implementing a system where apparatuses exchange configuration information to determine multiple reporting thresholds for remaining time, enabling more precise status reports with entries indicating buffer size values corresponding to specific remaining time ranges, thereby enhancing the granularity of DSR reports.

Benefits of technology

This approach provides the network with more comprehensive buffer status information, allowing for improved scheduling decisions and reducing errors in estimating remaining time, thus optimizing resource allocation.

[0037] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellite, an aircraft network device, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. In some example embodiments, radio access network (RAN) split architecture comprises a Centralized Unit (CU) and a Distributed Unit (DU) at an IAB donor node. An IAB node comprises a Mobile Terminal (IAB-MT) part that behaves like a UE toward the parent node, and a DU part of an IAB node behaves like a base station toward the next-hop IAB node.

[0038] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a  smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. The terminal device may also correspond to a Mobile Termination (MT) part of an IAB node (e.g., a relay node) . In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0039] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “resource block, ” “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like.

[0040] Among the objectives of the release 19, it has been agreed to specify scheduling enhancements for eXtended reality (XR) , as follows: for the uplink (UL) , specify enhancements using delay / deadline information, for support of UL scheduling to enable high XR capacity while meeting delay requirements / avoiding too late protocol data units (PDUs) . Further, logical channel prioritization (LCP) implementation complexity needs to be taken into account when evaluating solutions.

[0041] As discussed above, it has been agreed to enhance the DSR mechanism such as by increasing the granularity of DSR reports. Some proposals are illustrated as follows.

[0042] One proposed solution is to group the data according to the PDU sets and another proposed solution is to group based on the importance level. However, these solutions have the disadvantage that UE only provides valuable information at the gNB scheduler  in case data belonging to one PDU set or having a certain importance level can be prioritized over data belonging to another PDU set or having another importance level. However, this requires packet-level prioritization within a logical channel (LCH) , which is undesirable.

[0043] A further proposed solution is adding more thresholds and still group based on the thresholds, i.e. as data buckets between the thresholds. However, reporting the entire buffer size may not be optimal since, according to medium access control (MAC) standards, data can only trigger a DSR if not previously reported in a DSR. Hence, reporting the entire buffer size in DSR may prevent the triggering of a DSR when, later, the remaining time of previously reported data becomes smaller than the triggering threshold. The point is that the network will have very coarse information about data with remaining time above the highest reporting threshold, and deriving remaining time information based on previous report may bring to large errors.

[0044] Related to DSR, triggering using the largest value among the reporting threshold as triggering threshold seems to be the simplest and obvious solution, but using a lower one could allow triggering the DSR a bit later and only when really needed. It would also allow reporting data with remaining time above the triggering threshold to avoid too frequent trigger when new data keeps coming below the trigger threshold.

[0045] So far, there is no details on the relation between the triggering and reporting thresholds, as well as on the exact DSR with multiple pairs of remaining time and buffer size.

[0046] Example Environment

[0047] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication environment 100 includes a first apparatus 110 and a second apparatus 120. A serving area provided by the second apparatus 120 is called a cell. Further, the second apparatus 120 can provide one or more cells, for example, a cell 102 is provided by the second apparatus 120, as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0048] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may be comprised in a terminal device / apparatus and the second apparatus 120 may be comprised in a network device / apparatus serving the terminal device / apparatus.

[0049] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 110 operating as a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus 120 operating as a network apparatus. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal apparatus may be implemented at a network apparatus or other apparatus, and operations described in connection with a network apparatus may be implemented at a terminal apparatus or other apparatus.

[0050] In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 110 is a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus 120 is a network apparatus, a link from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second apparatus 120 is a transmitting (TX) apparatus (or a transmitter) and the first apparatus 110 is a receiving (RX) apparatus (or a receiver) . In UL, the first apparatus 110 is a TX apparatus (or a transmitter) and the second apparatus 120 is a RX apparatus (or a receiver) .

[0051] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell 102, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment 100. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the second apparatus 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the first apparatus 110 may be another device than a terminal device.

[0052] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , 5.5G, the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex  (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0053] Work Principle and Example Signaling for Communication

[0054] The present disclosure relates to a solution for DSR reporting thresholds configuration and reporting. With the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the configuring and reporting of status report may be more feasible. Moreover, the network device may obtain more comprehensive information about the buffer status at the UE and thus may make a more proper schedule.

[0055] Details will be discussed with reference to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signaling flow 200 of communication in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 200 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120, where the first apparatus 110 may function as a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus 120 may function as a network apparatus.

[0056] It is to be understood that the operations at the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 should be coordinated. In other words, the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 should have a common understand about configurations, parameters and so on. Such a common understand may be implemented by any suitable interactions between the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 or both the second apparatus 120 and the first apparatus 110 applying the same rule, policy, and / or the like.

[0057] In the following, although some operations are described from a perspective of the first apparatus 110, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the second apparatus 120. Similarly, although some operations are described from a perspective of the second apparatus 120, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the first apparatus 110. Merely for brevity, some of the same or similar contents are omitted here.

[0058] As illustrated in FIG. 2, in operation, the second apparatus 120 transmits (220-1) configuration information to the first apparatus 110, and the first apparatus 110 receives (220-2) the configuration information accordingly, where the configuration information is used for determining a plurality of reporting thresholds of remaining time.

[0059] In some example embodiments, the configuration information may be configured for a logical channel group (LCG) or a user equipment. That is, the reporting thresholds may be configured per UE or per LCG.

[0060] Based on the configuration information, the first apparatus 110 transmit (260-1) a status report to the second apparatus 120, and the second apparatus 120 receives (260-2) the status report accordingly. As one example implementation, upon DSR triggering based on such as a legacy behavior (i.e., the smallest remaining value of the running packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) discardTimers among all the service data units (SDUs) buffered for the LCG that has not been transmitted in any MAC PDU and has not been reported as data volume in a DSR MAC CE becomes below remainingTimeThreshold of the LCG) , or by any other new DSR triggering that may be introduced in future releases of the 3GPP specifications (e.g., DSR triggering prior to a measurement gap (MG) or SSB measurement timing configuration (SMTC) with scheduling restrictions) , the first apparatus 110 may trigger the status report.

[0061] According to the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the status report comprises a plurality of entries, where each entry comprises a first field indicating a buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range of a plurality of remaining time ranges which are determined based on the plurality of reporting thresholds. In some example embodiments, the status report may be comprised in a MAC CE. The remaining time range also may be called as remaining time interval sometimes.

[0062] In the following, more details about the configuration information will be discussed. In some example embodiments, the configuration information may indicate: first information on a triggering threshold of remaining time for the status report (remainingTimeThreshold) , and second information on the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0063] In some example embodiments, the second information may indicate a plurality of offsets, each offset corresponding to a difference between a reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds and the triggering threshold.

[0064] Alternatively, in some example embodiments, the second information may indicate a plurality of remaining time values of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0065] Merely for a better understanding, more example embodiments about the  configuration information will be discussed as below.

[0066] In some example embodiments, the threshold (s) for reporting multiple pairs of remaining time and corresponding buffer size (also referred to as “reporting threshold (s) ” ) and the threshold for DSR trigger are separately configured.

[0067] In one example embodiment, the reporting thresholds may be configured relative to the remaining time threshold used for DSR triggering (also referred to as “triggering threshold” ) . In such example embodiments, the reporting thresholds may be represented as an offset (s) above or below the DSR triggering threshold.

[0068] In one example embodiment, the reporting thresholds may be configured to the first apparatus 110 by signaling a list of N values. In one example implementation, the reporting thresholds may be determined by summing triggering threshold (remainingTimeThreshold) with the values in the list. For example, if the configured list comprises values: -5 ms, 0 ms and 10 ms, it means the reporting thresholds are set to:

[0069] ● reportingThreshold#1 = remainingTimeThreshold –5 ms,

[0070] ● reportingThreshold#2 = remainingTimeThreshold + 0 ms, and

[0071] ● reportingThreshold#3 = remainingTimeThreshold + 10 ms.

[0072] In another example embodiment, the reporting thresholds may be independently configured separately from the DSR triggering threshold. For example, the first apparatus 110 may receive a configuration including:

[0073] ● DSR Triggering threshold of remaining time (remainingTimeThreshold) , and

[0074] ● a list of DSR reporting thresholds of remaining time.

[0075] In the following, example embodiments about the remaining time range will be discussed.

[0076] In some example embodiments, one of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and a smallest reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds, and each of the other remaining time ranges of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between a preceding adjacent reporting threshold and one of the other reporting thresholds rather than the smallest reporting threshold. In this event, in some example embodiments, the buffer size #n (n= [1…N] , where N is the number of reporting thresholds) may indicate the data volume with  associated remaining time falling into the range of [threshold #n-1 and threshold #n] , where threshold #0 = 0.

[0077] As one example embodiment, upon triggering the DSR, the first apparatus 110 may compute buffer size values to be reported in DSR for each LCG as below:

[0078] ● buffer size#1 is the amount of data whose associated remaining time is within the remaining time range (0, reportingThreshold#1] ;

[0079] ● buffer size#2 is the amount of data whose associated remaining time is within the remaining time range (reportingThreshold#1, reportingThreshold#2] ;

[0080] ● buffer size#3 is the amount of data whose associated remaining time is within the remaining time range (reportingThreshold#1, reportingThreshold#3] .

[0081] Alternatively, in some example embodiments, each of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and one of the plurality of reporting thresholds. In this event, in some example embodiments, the buffer size #n may indicate the data volume with remaining time below threshold #n, i.e., (0, threshold #n] , based on which the second apparatus 120 may derive the buffer size falling into the remaining time range.

[0082] As one example embodiment, upon triggering the DSR, the first apparatus 110 may compute buffer size values to be reported in DSR for each LCG as below:

[0083] ● buffer size#1 is the amount of data whose associated remaining time is within the remaining time range (0, reportingThreshold#1] ;

[0084] ● buffer size#2 is the amount of data whose associated remaining time is within the remaining time range (0, reportingThreshold#2] ;

[0085] ● buffer size#3 is the amount of data whose associated remaining time is within the remaining time range (0, reportingThreshold#3] .

[0086] In the following, example embodiments about the definition of the remaining time and how to determine the buffer size value will be discussed.

[0087] In some example embodiments, the remaining time may be determined based on at least one timer used for determining data unit discarding.

[0088] In some example embodiments, the buffer size value corresponding to a  remaining time range may be determined (240) by considering a data unit corresponding to a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) service data unit (SDU) , wherein the reminting time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of the PDCP SDU is within the corresponding remaining time range.

[0089] Alternatively, or in addition, in some example embodiments, the buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range may be determined (240) by considering a data unit corresponding to a PDCP SDU of a protocol data unit (PDU) set, wherein the remaining time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of at least one PDCP SDU of the PDU set is within the corresponding remaining time range.

[0090] In some example embodiments, the data unit comprise at least one of the following: a PDCP data PDU, a PDCP SDU, a radio link control (RLC) SDU, an RLC SDU segment, or an RLC data PDU.

[0091] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, the PDU set consideration may be considered. Specifically, similar to the delay critical data definition, when pdu-SetDiscard is configured, the smallest remaining time of the whole PDU set is considered as the remaining time for the PDUs within the set.

[0092] Specifically, in some example embodiments, when determining the buffer size value for a remaining time range, if pdu-SetDiscard is not configured, data units whose associated remaining time is within the remaining time range may include:

[0093] ● PDCP SDUs for which no PDCP Data PDUs have been constructed and whose remaining time till discardTimer expiry is within the remaining time range.

[0094] ● PDCP Data PDUs that contain PDCP SDUs whose remaining time till discardTimer expiry is within the remaining time range and have not been submitted to lower layers.

[0095] ● RLC SDUs and SDU segments corresponding to a PDCP PDU whose remaining time till discardTimer expiry is within the remaining time range.

[0096] ● RLC data PDUs pending for initial transmission and containing an RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment corresponding to a PDCP PDU whose remaining time till discardTimer expiry is within the remaining time range.

[0097] Alternatively, in some example embodiments, when determining the buffer size value for a remaining time range, if pdu-SetDiscard is configured data units whose  associated remaining time is within the remaining time range may include:

[0098] ● PDCP SDUs of a PDU set where at least one PDCP SDU has remaining time within remaining time range.

[0099] ● PDCP Data PDUs that contain PDCP SDUs of a PDU set where at least one PDCP SDU has remaining time within the remaining time range.

[0100] ● RLC SDUs and SDU segments corresponding to a PDCP PDU of a PDU set where at least on PDCP SDU has remaining time within the remaining time range.

[0101] ● RLC data PDUs pending for initial transmission and containing an RLC SDU or RLC SDU segment corresponding to a PDCP PDU of a PDU set where at least on PDCP SDU has remaining time within the remaining time range.

[0102] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may determine a buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range associated with a smallest reporting threshold or a largest reporting threshold by considering at least one of the following: at least one control protocol data unit (PDU) , or at least one data unit to be retransmitted.

[0103] In some example embodiments, the following data units may be reported in the buffer size associated with the lowest remaining time range, i.e., remaining time range (0, reportingThreshold#1] : the PDCP Control PDUs; for acknowledged mode (AM) data radio bearers (DRBs) , the PDCP SDUs and PDCP Data PDUs to be retransmitted; and for RLC AM, the RLC data PDUs that are pending for retransmission.

[0104] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, the information on multiple pairs of remaining time and buffer size may be reported in DSR MAC CE. In the following, the possible formats of the DSR MAC CE will be discussed.

[0105] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE may comprise a fixed number of entries. In some example embodiments, the number of entries comprised the status report may be the same as the number of reporting thresholds comprised in the plurality of reporting thresholds, that is, the fixed number of buffer sizes and / or remaining times may be based on the configuration information, i.e., depending on the number of thresholds configured. In this event, if a buffer size value of a remaining time range between a reporting threshold and a preceding adjacent reporting threshold is zero, the first apparatus 110 may set a first field to zero or a preceding buffer size value, wherein the first field indicates a buffer size value and / or a remaining time associated with a remaining time  range.

[0106] Specifically, in a case of the MAC CE with fixed number of entries, for BS, buffer size index zero (i.e., buffer size value = 0) needs to be indicated if no data falling into the threshold range. For such entry, in some example embodiments, remaining time information may be omitted as there is no data thus no remaining time. Alternatively, in some other embodiments, remaining time equal to one of the reporting thresholds corresponding to the remaining time range may be indicated. For example, the data amount corresponds to the (reportingThreshold#1, reportingThreshold#2] , and thus the buffer size value #2 = 0 is reported. Further, for this entry, in some example embodiments, the remaining time information may be omitted. Alternatively, in some other embodiments, remaining time equal to reportingThreshold#1 or reportingThreshold#2 may be indicated.

[0107] Alternatively, for BS, if no data is falling into one threshold range (#n) , the same buffer size index may be reported for different entries (i.e., threshold range #n and #n-1) . As one example, if the data amount within (threshold #2, threshold #3] = 0, then buffer size values for (threshold #1, threshold #2] and (threshold #2, threshold #3] are the same.

[0108] In some example embodiments, remaining time information may indicate the smallest remaining time of the data with remaining time falling into the range. In some another example embodiments, for example in a case of the MAC CE with fixed number of entries, only one remaining time is reported in the DSR which is for the smallest remaining time. Remaining time information is not present for the other range (s) as the second apparatus 120 knows the corresponding remaining time range from the position of the buffer size.

[0109] In some example embodiments, a bit-length of the first field may be smaller than eight. As one example, less bits (e.g., 6 bits) could be used to report the buffer size, as the amount of data in each remaining time range is likely to be less than the amount of data reported for the entire LCG in a BSR.

[0110] For a better understanding, example MAC CEs are discussed with reference to FIG. 3A and FIG. 3C, which illustrate example MAC CE structures 300A to 300C in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0111] In the example MAC CE structures 300A, the DSR consists of N buffer size  values per LCG (i.e., a fixed number of entries) . The ith buffer size value corresponds to the ith remaining time range, where the 1st remaining time range is (0, reportingThreshold#1] , and the ith remaining time range (i= [2…N] ) is (reportingThreshold#i-1, reportingThreshold#i] . Specifically, Buffer Size 1 corresponds to the first remaining time range of the first LCG for which DSR information is reported; Buffer Size n1 corresponds to the last remaining time range of the first LCG for which DSR information is reported (where n1 is number of configured reporting thresholds for the first LCG) ; Buffer Size n1+1 corresponds to the first remaining time range of the second LCG for which DSR information is reported; and so on. In the example of FIG. 3A, if there is no data to report within the corresponding remaining time range (i.e., buffer size value = 0) , the buffer size value still needs to be signaled.

[0112] As discussed above, in some cases, less bits may be used for reporting the buffer size value. Reference is now made to FIG. 3B. In the example of FIG. 3B, 6 bits rather than 8 bits may be used for reporting the buffer size value.

[0113] Further refer to FIG. 3C. In the example of FIG. 3C, multiple buffer size and remaining time pairs are reported. As illustrated in FIG. 3C, the DSR consists of N buffer size and remaining time pairs per LCG. The ith buffer size and remaining time pair corresponds to the ith remaining time range, where the 1st remaining time range is (0, reportingThreshold#1] , and the ith remaining time range (i= [2. . N] ) is (reportingThreshold#i-1, reportingThreshold#i] .

[0114] In FIG. 3C, the UE also reports the exact value of the remaining time for the corresponding remaining time range, i.e., the shortest remaining time value of running PDCP discardTimer (or pdu-SetDiscard) among all PDCP SDUs that are buffered for the LCG, but have not been transmitted in any MAC PDU, at the time of the first symbol of the first physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmission that includes the DSR MAC CE, and whose associated remaining time (based on the principles described above) is within the corresponding remaining time range.

[0115] In FIG. 3C, Buffer Size 1 and Remaining Time 1 correspond to the first remaining time range of the first LCG for which DSR information is reported; Buffer Size N1 and Remaining Time N1 correspond to the last remaining time range of the first LCG for which DSR information is reported (N1= number of configured reporting thresholds for the first LCG) ; Buffer Size N1+1 and Remaining Time N1+1 correspond to the first  remaining time range of the second LCG for which DSR information is reported; and so on.

[0116] Since the (minimum) remaining time corresponding to a given remaining time range may only be within that interval, a fewer number of bits could be used to convey remaining time information. In some example embodiments, the remaining time could be signaling using e.g., 4 bits instead of 6, and thus 2 additional bits could be reserved for future use. For example, in current DSR report, the granularity for reporting the remaining time is 1 ms, meaning that with 6 bits the UE can signal a remaining time between 1 and 64 ms. Assuming 4 reporting thresholds are configured (16, 32, 48 and 64 ms) , the actual remaining time in each remaining time range may be signaled using only 4 bits and achieving the same granularity as legacy signaling.

[0117] Alternatively, MAC CE with a variable number of entries (buffer size and / or remaining time) depending on data availability for the entry may be used. In some example embodiments, it may be possible to skip reporting of one or more buffer size and remaining time pairs if, e.g., the corresponding buffer size value is equal to zero. In this case, the remaining time range may be determined based on the signaled remaining time value (e.g., if 0 < Remaining Time m ≤ reportingThreshold#1, then the corresponding buffer size value (Buffer Size m) corresponds to the remaining time range (0, reportingThreshold#1] , and so on.

[0118] In some example embodiments, an explicit indication may be introduced. Specifically, the first apparatus 110 may only report the entries with data available for transmission, with an extension ( ‘E’ ) bit indicating whether there is one or more entries following for the LCG.

[0119] In some example embodiments, each entry further comprises a field indicating a smallest remaining time of data with remaining time within a respective remaining time range corresponding to the entry. If a buffer size value is zero, the first apparatus 110 may omit the corresponding entry. . In some example embodiments, each entry further comprises a filed indicating whether the entry is the last entry for a logical channel group (LCG) .

[0120] As one example implementation, the DSR may include an explicit indication whether a buffer size and remaining time pair is the last one signaled for the corresponding LCG. This could be done e.g. by using the R bit in the current DSR MAC CE format as  extension (E) bit (e.g., E=1 means there is additional buffer size and remaining time pair signaled for this LCG, E=0 means this is the last buffer size and remaining time pair signaled for this LCG) . Alternatively, the Buffer Size information could be signaled using less bits (e.g., 7 bits) and the first bit of the octet carrying buffer size information could be used as E bit.

[0121] In some example embodiments, an implicit indication may be introduced. Specifically, the entry for highest threshold is always reported, the other entries can be omitted if no data. Based on the reported value of the remaining time falling into the highest remaining time range, the network implicitly knows it is the last entry for the LCG.

[0122] In some example embodiments, if a buffer size value is zero and an entry associated with the buffer size value is not the last entry for a logical channel group (LCG) , the first apparatus 110 may omit the entry in the status report. Alternatively, if an entry is the last entry for a logical channel group (LCG) , the first apparatus 110 may comprise the entry in the status report regardless of whether the corresponding buffer size value is zero.

[0123] As one example implementation, the first apparatus always reports at least the buffer size and remaining time pair corresponding to the last remaining time range for a LCG, even if it is equal to zero. In this case, if there is no data to report for the last remaining time range, the UE may report Buffer Size = 0 and Remaining Time =reportingThreshold#N.

[0124] In some example embodiments, the buffer size calculated and reported for a given remaining time range may also include low-importance data (such as, data buffered with no associated running discardTimer) that, in the UE transmission buffer, is in front of any data with associated running discardTimer and which is reported for the corresponding remaining time range.

[0125] In some example embodiments, the DSR may not report the buffer size value corresponding to data with remaining time larger than the highest configured reporting threshold. This is because, based on legacy DSR triggering mechanism, a PDCP SDU whose discard timer becomes smaller than remainingTimeThreshold can only trigger a DSR if it was not previously reported in a DSR. Hence, reporting data with any value of the PDCP discard timer in a DSR may prevent the triggering of a DSR when, later, the remaining time of such data becomes smaller than the triggering threshold.

[0126] Example Method

[0127] FIG. 4 shows a flowchart of an example method 400 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0128] At block 410, the first apparatus receives, from a second apparatus, configuration information for determining a plurality of reporting thresholds of remaining time.

[0129] At block 420, the first apparatus transmits, to the second apparatus, a status report comprising a plurality of entries, each entry comprising a first field indicating a buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range of a plurality of remaining time ranges which are determined based on the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0130] In some example embodiments, the configuration information indicates: first information on a triggering threshold of remaining time for the status report, and second information on the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0131] In some example embodiments, the second information indicates one of the following: a plurality of offsets, each offset corresponding to a difference between a reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds and the triggering threshold, or a plurality of remaining time values of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0132] In some example embodiments, one of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and a smallest reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds, and each of the other remaining time ranges of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between a preceding adjacent reporting threshold and one of the other reporting thresholds rather than the smallest reporting threshold.

[0133] In some example embodiments, each of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and one of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0134] In some example embodiments, the remaining time is determined based on at least one timer used for determining data unit discarding.

[0135] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus may determine the buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range by considering at least one of the following: a data unit corresponding to a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) service data unit  (SDU) , wherein the reminting time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of the PDCP SDU is within the corresponding remaining time range, or a data unit corresponding to a PDCP SDU of a protocol data unit (PDU) set, wherein the remaining time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of PDCP SDU of the PDU set is within the corresponding remaining time range.

[0136] In some example embodiments, the data unit may comprise at least one of the following: a PDCP data PDU, a PDCP SDU, a radio link control (RLC) SDU, an RLC SDU segment, or an RLC data PDU.

[0137] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that a buffer size value of a remaining time range between a reporting threshold and a preceding adjacent reporting threshold is zero, the first apparatus may set a first field to zero or a preceding buffer size value, wherein the first field indicates a buffer size value of a remaining time range associated with the reporting threshold.

[0138] In some example embodiments, each entry further comprises a second field indicating a smallest remaining time of data with remaining time within a respective remaining time range corresponding to the entry.

[0139] In some example embodiments, the status report comprises a field indicating a smallest remaining time of data reported in the status report.

[0140] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that a buffer size value is zero, the first apparatus may omit an entry corresponding to the buffer size value in the status report.

[0141] In some example embodiments, each entry further comprises a third filed indicating whether the entry is the last entry for a logical channel group (LCG) .

[0142] In some embodiments, in accordance with a determination that a buffer size value is zero and an entry associated with the buffer size value is not the last entry for a logical channel group (LCG) , the first apparatus may omit the entry in the status report; and in accordance with a determination that an entry is the last entry for an LCG, the first apparatus may comprise the entry in the status report.

[0143] In some example embodiments, a buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range associated with a smallest reporting threshold or a largest reporting threshold may be determined by considering at least one of the following: at least one control  protocol data unit (PDU) , or at least one data unit to be retransmitted.

[0144] In some example embodiments, a bit-length of the first field is smaller than eight.

[0145] In some example embodiments, the configuration information is configured for a logical channel group (LCG) or a user equipment.

[0146] In some example embodiments, the status report is comprised in a medium access control control element (MAC CE) .

[0147] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus is a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus is a network apparatus.

[0148] FIG. 5 shows a flowchart of an example method 500 implemented at a second apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 500 will be described from the perspective of the second apparatus 120 in FIG. 1.

[0149] At block 510, the second apparatus transmits, to a first apparatus, configuration information for determining a plurality of reporting thresholds of remaining time.

[0150] At block 520, the second apparatus receives, from the first apparatus, a status report comprising a plurality of entries, each entry comprising a first field indicating a buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range of a plurality of remaining time ranges which are determined based on the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0151] In some example embodiments, the configuration information indicates: first information on a triggering threshold of remaining time for the status report, and second information on the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0152] In some example embodiments, the second information indicates one of the following: a plurality of offsets, each offset corresponding to a difference between a reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds and the triggering threshold, or a plurality of remaining time values of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0153] In some example embodiments, one of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and a smallest reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds, and each of the other remaining time ranges of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between a preceding adjacent reporting threshold and one of the other reporting thresholds rather than the smallest reporting  threshold.

[0154] In some example embodiments, each of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and one of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0155] In some example embodiments, the remaining time is determined based on at least one timer used for determining data unit discarding.

[0156] In some example embodiments, the buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range is determined by considering at least one of the following: a data unit corresponding to a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) service data unit (SDU) , wherein the reminting time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of the PDCP SDU is within the corresponding remaining time range, or a data unit corresponding to a PDCP SDU of a protocol data unit (PDU) set, wherein the remaining time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of PDCP SDU of the PDU set is within the corresponding remaining time range.

[0157] In some example embodiments, the data unit may comprise at least one of the following: a PDCP data PDU, a PDCP SDU, a radio link control (RLC) SDU, an RLC SDU segment, or an RLC data PDU.

[0158] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that a first field which indicates a buffer size value of a remaining time range associated with a reporting threshold is set to zero or a preceding buffer size value, the second apparatus may determine that a buffer size value of a remaining time range between the reporting threshold and a preceding adjacent reporting threshold is zero.

[0159] In some example embodiments, each entry further comprises a second field indicating a smallest remaining time of data with remaining time within a respective remaining time range corresponding to the entry.

[0160] In some example embodiments, each entry further comprises a third filed indicating whether the entry is the last entry for a logical channel group (LCG) .

[0161] In some example embodiments, in accordance with a determination that an entry is associated with a largest reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds, the second apparatus may determine the entry is the last entry for a logical channel group (LCG) .

[0162] In some example embodiments, a buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range associated with a smallest reporting threshold or a largest reporting threshold may be determined by considering at least one of the following: at least one control protocol data unit (PDU) , or at least one data unit to be retransmitted.

[0163] In some example embodiments, the status report comprises a field indicating a smallest remaining time of data reported in the status report.

[0164] In some example embodiments, a bit-length of the first field is smaller than eight.

[0165] In some example embodiments, the configuration information is configured for a logical channel group (LCG) or a user equipment.

[0166] In some example embodiments, the status report is comprised in a medium access control control element (MAC CE) .

[0167] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus is a terminal apparatus and the second apparatus is a network apparatus.

[0168] Example Apparatus, Device and Medium

[0169] In some example embodiments, a first apparatus capable of performing any of the method 400 (for example, the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1) may comprise means for performing the respective operations of the method 400. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module. The first apparatus may be implemented as or included in the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0170] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus comprises means for receiving, from a second apparatus, configuration information for determining a plurality of reporting thresholds of remaining time; and means for transmitting, to the second apparatus, a status report comprising a plurality of entries, each entry comprising a first field indicating a buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range of a plurality of remaining time ranges which are determined based on the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0171] In some example embodiments, the configuration information indicates: first information on a triggering threshold of remaining time for the status report, and second information on the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0172] In some example embodiments, the second information indicates one of the following: a plurality of offsets, each offset corresponding to a difference between a reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds and the triggering threshold, or a plurality of remaining time values of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0173] In some example embodiments, one of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and a smallest reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds, and each of the other remaining time ranges of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between a preceding adjacent reporting threshold and one of the other reporting thresholds rather than the smallest reporting threshold.

[0174] In some example embodiments, each of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and one of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0175] In some example embodiments, the remaining time is determined based on at least one timer used for determining data unit discarding.

[0176] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus further comprises means for determining the buffer size value corresponding to a remaining time range by considering at least one of the following: a data unit corresponding to a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) service data unit (SDU) , wherein the reminting time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of the PDCP SDU is within the corresponding remaining time range, or a data unit corresponding to a PDCP SDU of a protocol data unit (PDU) set, wherein the remaining time till expiry of the timer used for data unit discarding of PDCP SDU of the PDU set is within the corresponding remaining time range.

[0193] In some example embodiments, one of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and a smallest reporting threshold of the plurality of reporting thresholds, and each of the other remaining time ranges of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between a preceding adjacent reporting threshold and one of the other reporting thresholds rather than the smallest reporting threshold.

[0194] In some example embodiments, each of the plurality of remaining time ranges is a remaining time range between zero and one of the plurality of reporting thresholds.

[0195] In some example embodiments, the remaining time is determined based on at least one timer used for determining data unit discarding.
