Description

[0001] A LIGHT STRIP AND A LIGHT STRIP SYSTEM

[0002] The invention relates in general to light strips and light strip systems. A light strip and a light strip system can be used to guide, instruct and warn people.

[0003] Background

[0004] Various systems are known for guiding people in emergency situations e.g. during a fire, to emergency exits of various buildings or ships. These systems include various emergency exit lighting systems and emergency exits marked with reflective paint or tape, for example.

[0005] There are known guidance lights in which light sources are affixed consecutively in the shape of a strip. The light sources on the strip are arranged to light up in an emergency and to illuminate the way out. Many applications, such as hotels or passenger ships, have designated escape routes in emergencies that people should follow during an evacuation. In emergencies, people often do not behave as planned or do not follow pre-determined exit routes. There can be many reasons for this. People may not be aware of emergency exit routes and the related signage. In addition, in emergencies, people prefer to use routes that are familiar to them. On the other hand, in the event of a fire, a pre-determined escape route may be impossible to use due to the location of the fire, so that known solutions may steer people in the wrong direction or even toward the fire.

[0006] LED light sources or LED light source strips are used, for example, to guide people in different areas such as airports or hospitals. They are usually mounted in the floor and the light sources can be controlled to flash, flow or function in any other desired mode to provide the desired guidance effect. LED light strips use, for example, monochrome or multicolor LED light sources. Such a light strip can be produced by a continuous manufacturing process, such as extrusion or a similar process. The components used in the light strip are connected to a thin elastic circuit board using surface mount technology. One prior-art light sign is disclosed in publication FI108106B. This publication discloses a light strip consisting of at least one electrically conductive elongate conductive member to which a plurality of longitudinally successive components are attached for providing lighting functionality or the like. The conductive member and the components are surrounded by a casing part.

[0007] With the guiding systems of the prior art, it can be difficult for the persons to know, despite of e.g. dynamic guiding how far away are the exits and is the person moving to the correct exit and not for example towards a place where there is a fire. For this reason, it would be important to provide guidance systems which are more reliable at guiding people especially in dangerous situations where visibility is very limited (e.g. because of smoke) so that people find the correct exits which are safe to use.

[0008] Summary of the invention

[0009] The purpose of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art and to provide a completely new type of light strip and light strip system. With the solution of the invention, the light strip is able to effectively and reliably guide people to correct exits also in poor and dangerous conditions with low visibility.

[0010] The invention relates to a light strip, which comprises light-emitting light sources, such as LED-light sources, means for conducting current to the light sources and a casing part, wherein the light sources and / or means for conducting current to the light sources are at least in part surrounded with the casing part, and wherein the light strip comprises at least one sign and / or display which is configured to display information related to distance and / or direction to a guiding target destination e.g. to a next emergency exit.

[0011] In one embodiment of the invention the at least one sign and / or display is arranged to the light strip so that it is at least in part surrounded by the casing part. In one embodiment of the invention the at least one sign and / or display is arranged at least in part externally to the light strip, e.g. so that the sign and / or display at least in part surrounds the casing part and / or so that the sign and / or display is arranged on top of the casing part.

[0012] In one embodiment of the invention the light strip comprises at least two signs and / or displays and the signs and / or displays are arranged to the light strip at certain distances from each other, e.g. with 50-meter distance between the sign and / or displays.

[0013] In one embodiment of the invention the display comprises an electronic ink or an electrochromic reflective display arrangement.

[0014] In one embodiment of the invention the display is a lit display.

[0015] In one embodiment of the invention the sign is a static sign presenting distance and / or direction.

[0016] In one embodiment of the invention the display is configured to display distance, e.g. as a number, from the location of the display to a destination, such as an emergency exit, dynamically and so that the distance and / or direction is configured to be displayed to current guiding target destination.

[0017] In one embodiment of the invention the display is configured to display a guiding symbol, such as an arrow, guiding towards a current guiding target.

[0018] In one embodiment of the invention the light strip comprises a magnifying structure arranged in connection with the sign and / or display and configured to magnify the area of the sign and / or display. In one embodiment of the invention the magnifying structure, e.g. lens structure, can be tilted. In one embodiment of the invention the light strip comprises means to reflect at least part of the light of the light sources to the sign and / or display, such as a reflector.

[0019] In one embodiment of the invention the light sources of light strip are arranged to be switched on continuously, i.e. statically, and / or to provide guidance by flashing the light sources.

[0020] In one embodiment of the invention the light strip or a light strip system comprises at least one control unit configured to control the light sources and / or the at least one display of the light strip.

[0021] In one embodiment of the invention the light strip and / or the control unit is connected to a guidance system, evacuation system and / or emergency lighting system.

[0022] In one embodiment of the invention the light sources are connected to a circuit board, the circuit board being essentially elastic and / or comprising the means for conducting current to the light sources.

[0023] In one embodiment of the invention the light sources are arranged consecutively and / or adjacently.

[0024] In one embodiment of the invention the sign and / or display, the light strip, and / or the circuit board are essentially elastic.

[0025] The invention relates to also to a light strip system which comprises at least one light strip according to any embodiment of the invention and at least one control device for controlling the at least one light strip.

[0026] An advantage of the solution of the invention is that with the light strip of the invention the guided persons are able to easily see how long way there is still to the exit and that they are moving to the right direction. This can help to avoid panic among the guided persons also in challenging situations, e.g. in low visibility situations for example when there is lot of smoke. The solution of the invention makes the guiding more reliable and effective. In dangerous circumstances this can even save lives of people.

[0034] Detailed description of the invention

[0035] The solution of the invention may typically use light sources arranged consecutively and / or side-by-side, which are controlled in such a way that the light sources form a light strip that can be arranged in spaces that people use when exiting e.g. a hazardous situation. These can include, for example, corridors in hotels or other buildings or ships. Different modes can be provided for the light strip or at least part of it. The light sources are typically controlled by a control system and / or control unit, whereby the control system and / or control unit controls the operation of the light strip or multiple light strips connected to the control system and / or the control unit. The system can be activated automatically, manually and / or deactivated. The light strips can be used to guide and direct passengers and / or show exit routes, for example in the presence of a danger.

[0036] One of the modes of the light sources in the light strip can be a dynamic mode in which the light sources are switched on and off so as to create the impression of movement. Thus, a person who sees the impression of the movement produced by the light sources in the light strip is guided in the direction of the "movement" on the light strip. Typically, the impression of movement is obtained by controlling the light sources in groups, where movement is indicated by switching on the next light source and switching off the preceding one. A number of light sources are arranged / connected on a strip, in particular a conductive strip, where they are controlled as described above. In this way, an impression of movement is created by the light sources, i.e. by "running" the light, and the said impression of movement is created at least along a part of the light strip, typically along the entire length of the light strip. The "moving" light in the light strip in the first, dynamic, mode is typically formed, for example, by groups of 3 light sources, where the light of one light source is switched on and the other two are switched off. The movement occurs when the next light source is turned on and the preceding light source is turned off. The light strips can be connected in series, allowing the impression of movement to continue from one light strip to the next. The speed of the movement produced by the light sources can be adjusted as desired and its direction can also be changed.

[0037] Light sources can also have a second mode, the static mode, in which the light sources on the strip or part of the strip show a steady light. Typically, static added light is achieved by all light sources in at least one light strip, or at least part of a light strip, being switched to show light at the same time. The light strip can be controlled to switch between dynamic and static modes. The light strip may also have other modes of operation. In one embodiment, the color of the light produced by the light source can be changed. Depending on the characteristics of the light source, it is also possible, for example, to change the color of the light displayed by the light source when the light strip is switched to static mode. The light sources can be e.g. semiconductor light sources, such as LED light sources. In one embodiment of the invention, the light sources in the light strip are substantially equidistant from each other along the entire length of the light strip.

[0038] The light strip used in the solution of the invention may be essentially a flat light strip used, for example, to guide the passage of people or vehicles in various spaces, such as ships, tunnels, parking garages, hotels, airports or hospitals. It can be, for example, about 20 mm wide and 4-5 mm thick. It may have an essentially thin circuit board in the middle, which may be elastic. The circuit board may consist, for example, of a strip of elastic plastic material, with copper wiring on top and / or underneath, produced for example by etching or pressing. Light sources can be connected to the top surface of the circuit board at certain intervals, and possibly other components, such as resistors, to control and protect the light sources. The light sources can be controlled, e.g. as explained above, so as to produce the desired guidance function through flashing, running and / or static illumination. The light sources and / or the means of conducting current to the light sources, e.g. the printed circuit board and the components connected to the circuit board, can be surrounded (e.g. be entirely enclosed) by the casing part in the cross-sectional view. The casing part can be transparent and / or plastic material. In the solution of the invention, the circuit board and the components connected to it can be enclosed in such a way as to provide preferably a fully waterproof light strip, typically with a protection class such as IP68. In one embodiment of the invention the light sources are arranged in connection with the illuminated stripe such that at least a part of the light emitted by the light sources is directed to the casing part. In one embodiment of the invention the light sources of the light strip can be connected in series with each other, and a resistor, regulator or other current limiting component can be connected in series with them.

[0039] The light strip can comprise or be connected to at least one power supply, such as a voltage source. The means of conducting current in the light strip can be connected to the power supply, e.g. one end of the light strip.

[0040] In one embodiment of the invention, the light strip can comprise at least one connector and the connector(s) can be arranged to one end of the light strip or to both ends of the light strip. The connector can be used to connect the light source strip to a control unit and / or power source.

[0041] In the solution of the invention the light strip can comprises light-emitting light sources, such as LED-light sources, means for conducting current to the light sources and a casing part, wherein the light sources and / or means for conducting current to the light sources are at least in part surrounded with the casing part. The light strip further comprises at least one sign and / or display which is configured to display information related to distance and / or direction to a guiding target destination e.g. to a next emergency exit. The sign and / or display can be arranged to the light strip so that it is at least in part surrounded by the casing part and / or so that the sign and / or display is at least in part externally to the light strip, e.g. so that the sign and / or display at least in part surrounds the casing part and / or so that the sign and / or display is arranged on top of the casing part. In one embodiment of the invention the sign and / or display is arranged completely inside the casing part. In one embodiment of the invention the sign and / or display is arranged completely outside the casing part.

[0042] The light strip can comprise multiple signs and / or displays and the signs and / or displays are arranged to the light strip at certain distances from each other. In one embodiment there can be e.g. 20 - 100 m between the signs and / or displays or e.g. 50-meter distance between the signs and / or displays. The display can comprise an electronic ink or an electrochromic reflective display arrangement and / or the display can be a lit display. In one embodiment of the invention the display can comprise internal illumination, e.g. in the background or the display can utilize light of the light sources of the light strip for illuminating the display. In one embodiment of the invention the light strip comprises means to reflect at least part of the light of the light sources to the display, such as a reflector.

[0043] The display can display distance, e.g. as a number, from the location of the display to a desired target destination, such as an emergency exit. The display can be a dynamic display so that the content can be changed, e.g. so that the distance and / or direction is configured to be displayed to current guiding target destination. The display can display the direction to the target exit for example as a guiding symbol, such as an arrow.

[0044] In one embodiment of the invention the information to be displayed in the at least one display can be sent and / or transmitted directly to the display, e.g. with a configuration tool.

[0045] In one embodiment of the invention the sign of the light strip can be a static sign presenting distance (e.g. in numbers) and / or direction (e.g. as an arrow) to a desired target destination, such as an emergency exit.

[0046] In one embodiment of the invention the light strip comprises a magnifying structure arranged in connection with the sign and / or display and configured to magnify the area of the sign and / or display. In this way the sign and / or display is easier to arrange in connection with the light strip but at the same time the readability of the sign and / or display can be kept good. In one embodiment of the invention the magnifying structure, e.g. lens structure, can be tilted so that the sign and / or display can be seen better from the side of the light strip. In the following some examples are presented relating figures. In these examples not all light sources of the light source string are shown but only a part of the light strip and light sources of the light strip are presented. The light strip can continue to both directions with the same structure as presented in the figures.

[0047] In the following examples, and e.g. relating to example embodiments in the figures, the light strips comprise displays but in the solution of the invention it is possible to use signs instead of displays or in addition to displays in the following examples. The signs can be similar in size as the displays.

[0048] Figures 1A - B illustrate an exemplary embodiment of a light strip 100 from a top view. In the example of Figure 1 A and 1 B the strip 100 comprises light sources 103 which are arranged inside the casing part 101 , which essentially surrounds the light sources and means for conducting current to the light sources. The light strip 100 comprises at least one display 102 which is configured to display information related to distance and / or direction to a guiding target destination e.g. to a next emergency exit. In the example of Figure 1A the display displays that there is 240m to the exit to which people are guided. In Figure 1 B the display displays distance to another exit which is preferred in the circumstances of Figure 1 B. In this case the displayed distance to the exit is 60m.

[0049] Figures 2A - D show a top view of an example according to an embodiment of the invention in diagrammatic form. In this example embodiment the strip 200 comprises light sources 203 which are arranged inside the casing part 201 , which essentially surrounds the light sources and means for conducting current to the light sources. The light strip 200 comprises at least one display 202 which is configured to display information related to distance and / or direction to a guiding target destination e.g. to a next emergency exit. In the example of Figure 2A the display displays that there is 240m to the exit where people are guided. In the Figure 2B the display 202 displays direction to the target exit. In one example embodiment the display 202 of Figure 2A can be same display as in Figure 2B, and e.g. in this case the display can alternate, e.g. periodically, between displaying the distance information and the direction information. In one example embodiment the display 202 of Figure 2A can be a different display as in Figure 2B, and e.g. next display of the light strip to the display of Figure 2A. In this case e.g. every other display of the light strip can be displaying distance, and every other display can be displaying direction to the desired exit. These functions and / or embodiments of this paragraph can also be utilized with other embodiments of the invention.

[0050] Figures 2C and 2B can present similar parts of light strip as Figure 2A and 2B (e.g. 2C corresponding 2A and 2D corresponding 2B). In this case the light strip 200 of Figure 2C and 2B can direct the persons to another exit which is in 60 m distance and in direction as indicated in Figure 2D.

[0051] Figures 3A-3C show a top and cross section view (at the A-A-line) of an example according to an embodiment of the invention in diagrammatic form. In this example embodiment the strip 300 comprises light sources 303 which are arranged inside the casing part 301 , which essentially surrounds the light sources and means for conducting current to the light sources. The light strip 300 comprises at least one display 302 which is configured to display information related to distance and / or direction to a guiding target destination e.g. to a next emergency exit. In this example the solution comprises a magnifying means, e.g. a lens structure, configured to magnify the view to the display and / or the content presented on the display. The magnifying means can be arranged to a fastening means 304 which is configured to fasten the magnifying means and / or the display to the light strip, e.g. so that the magnifying means and / or fastening means is at least partly surrounding the light strip, for example so that the magnifying means is on the top of the display 302. The magnifying means, e.g. a lens structure, can comprise or consist of plastic material. The magnifying means, e.g. a lens structure, can be tilted, e.g. towards the (longer) side of the light strip. In this example, the distance to the target exit is 240m as displayed on the display. In the Figure 3C the display 302 displays direction to the target exit.

[0052] Figures 4A-4C show a top and cross section view (at the A-A-line) of an example according to an embodiment of the invention in diagrammatic form. The embodiment of the Figure 4A and 4B is otherwise similar to the embodiment of the Figure 3A and 3B comprising light sources 403 arranged to the casing part 401 but in this example embodiment the display 402 is illuminated by the light sources 405 next to the display 402. In one embodiment of the invention this can be done so that the means for guiding light 406 are arranged in connection with the display and at least one or two light source(s) next to the display, e.g. with fastening means, which means for guiding light are configured to guide and / or reflect light from a light source 405 to the display 402. This way the display can be illuminated with the light sources 405 of the light strip 400 next to the display and the display can be easily seen also in dark and low visibility conditions. The display 402 can be similar as explained in the previous examples and the light strip can comprise multiple displays which can indicate direction and / or distance to the exit, e.g. as described with other embodiments. A magnifying means and / or fastening means can be arranged to the light strip of this embodiment but the magnifying means and / or the fastening means are optional. In this case, for example light from the light sources next to the display can travel through the casing part towards the display and thus illuminate the display. In the Figure 4C the display 402 displays direction to the target exit.

[0053] Figures 5A-5C show a top and cross section views of an example according to an embodiment of the invention in diagrammatic form. Figure 5B presents a cross section at the A-A-line of Figure 5A and Figure 5C presents a cross section at the B-B-line of Figure 5A. The embodiment of the Figure 5A and 5B is otherwise similar to the embodiment of the Figure 4A and 4B comprising light sources 503 arranged to the casing part 501 but in this example embodiment the means for guiding light 506 comprises an opening 507 through which at least part of the light of the light sources 505 next to the display 502 can come out directly to the top fop the light strip 500. In one embodiment at least part of the light of the light sources 505 next to the display 502 is directed or reflected at the same time to the display 502 which is then illuminated. A magnifying means and / or fastening means can be arranged to the light strip of this embodiment but the magnifying means and / or the fastening means are optional. In this case, for example light from the light sources next to the display can travel through the casing part towards the display and thus illuminate the display.

[0054] In a light strip according to an embodiment of the invention, the light source, the light emitting component of the light source, the light strip and / or the casing part of the light strip, the sign and / or the display may be at least partially protected by a transparent protective material comprising e.g. aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The protective material stays clear and transparent despite exposure to light and / or heat. In this way, the visibility of light produced by the light sources remains as intended and there is no unwanted dimming.

[0055] In one embodiment of the invention at least a part of the casing part comprises heat transferring substance, which transfers heat away from the light sources and / or other components and / or a light-storing substance, which emits light for at least a certain time after the light sources are not in operation. In one embodiment of the invention the light storing substance comprises particles of light storing material. The particles of light storing material can be located evenly in the casing part and / or located at certain part of the casing part.

[0056] A light source system utilizing a light strip or light strips may comprise a control device, a control unit and / or a control system connected to the at least one light strip. The control device, control unit and / or the control system can control the light sources of the light strip as described in different embodiments, e.g. with dynamic and static operation and / or with one or more systems. The control device, a control unit and / or a control system for controlling the light sources of the light strip can be configured to turn on and off the light sources of the light strip, e.g., one at a time, in a predetermined manner and / or to control the displays to display distance and / or direction to the nearest and / or desired exit. In an embodiment of the invention, the control information is transmitted to the light strip and / or display(s) of the light strip wirelessly or in a wired manner. In one embodiment of the invention there are separate conductors in the light strip for data connection for receiving control information to the displays. In one embodiment of the invention the control information for the displays is sent via the same means for conducting current with which the light sources receive power.

[0057] In one embodiment of the invention the light strip and / or the control unit is connected to a guidance system, evacuation system and / or emergency lighting system. In one embodiment of the invention information relating to a guiding target destination is received from the guidance system, evacuation system and / or emergency lighting system, for example based on the situation in the area where the system is used. In one embodiment of the invention the light strip is configured to display information related to distance and / or direction to a guiding target destination based on the received information relating to the guiding target, e.g. location of the guiding target, direction to the guiding target, and / or distance to the guiding target.

[0058] As explained earlier, in one embodiment of the invention the light sources of the light strip can be arranged to be on continuously, i.e. statically, and / or to flash, e.g. for provide guidance. In one embodiment of the invention the light sources can be arranged to be continuously lit in an emergency or when providing guidance, or the light sources are arranged to indicate the direction of exit in an emergency, or when providing guidance, by flashing the light sources of the light source string.
