Description

AUTONOMOUS CONTROL SYSTEM (ACS) FOR PREVENTERS, AND DEVICES THEREOF

[0001] Cross Reference To Related Applications

[0002] The present disclosure claims priority to a patent application in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China No. 32024097092.3, titled “AUTONOMOUS CONTROL SYSTEM (ACS) FOR PREVENTERS, AND DEVICES THEREOF” filed September 23, 2024, the full disclosures of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entities for all purposes.

[0003] Field of the Disclosure

[0004] The present disclosure relates to the field of the oil and gas industry, and in particular to devices for controlling wellheads in blowout preventers.

[0005] Background of the Disclosure

[0006] Blowout preventers in the oil and gas industry, or commonly known within the art as preventers, are typically operated in conditions having an aggressive environment. The working environment of such preventers is typically oil (fluid) , gas, gas condensate, formation water, drilling fluid and their mixtures.

[0007] In the winter season, preventers are operated in low temperature conditions, often down to as low as minus 45℃. The ability to seal a wellhead in the event of accidents with a pipe which is disposed within in the preventer and extending downwardly into the well bore, is an important factor determining the safety of personnel working at the wellhead and also minimizing harm to the natural environment in the event of a blowout.

[0008] During the well overhaul or well servicing, cases may occur when a fluid or oil-containing liquid (OCL) or gases are discharged.

[0009] Such a discharge or blowout does not necessarily always occur in the presence of operating or maintenance personnel capable of sealing the well using control stations, and are known to frequently occur when operating or maintenance personnel are on a break and the wellhead is unattended.

[0010] Also, as is known, fluid combustion may also occur during such discharge, which eliminates the possibility of well sealing and increases the likelihood of an emergency at the wellhead.

[0011] Object of the Disclosure

[0012] It is an object of the present disclosure to provide an autonomous control system (ACS) for blowout preventers, which overcomes or at least partially ameliorates some of the deficiencies as associated with those of the prior art.Brief Description of the Drawings

[0013] In order that a more precise understanding of the above-recited disclosure can be obtained, a more particular description of the disclosure briefly described above will be rendered by reference to specific embodiments thereof that are illustrated in the appended drawings.

[0014] The drawings presented herein may not be drawn to scale and any reference to dimensions in the drawings or the following description is specific to the embodiments disclosed.

[0015] Any variations of these dimensions that will allow the subject disclosure to function for its intended purpose are within the scope of the subject disclosure. Thus, understanding that these drawings depict only typical embodiments of the disclosure and are not therefore to be considered as limiting in scope, the disclosure will be described and explained with additional specificity and detail through the use of the accompanying drawings in which:

[0045] DETAILS OF EMBODIMENTS

[0046] In accordance with the first aspect or variant of the disclosure, the following describes a preferred embodiment of the autonomous control system (ACS) .

[0047] Referring to Figure 1 and Figure 2 there is shown a schematic layout diagram of an implementation of an autonomous control system (ACS) in accordance with the present disclosure, and a design variant of the autonomous control system (ACS) respectfully.

[0048] In such an embodiment, the present disclosure is implemented so as to provide for the closing a preventer using an autonomous control system (ACS) according to the present disclosure, which is included in the standard hydraulic control circuit of the preventer.

[0049] As is shown, (1) is remote manual control of the preventer, (2) is the hydraulic control panel at the driller's station, (3) is the preventer, (4) is the circulation system, (5) is the remote hydraulic control panel, (6) is the autonomous control system (ACS) , (7) are the standard hydraulic control lines for the hydraulic cylinders of the hydraulic control system, (8) is the sensor line, (9) is a mechanical or temperature-sensitive temperature sensor, (10) is a pyrotechnic charge, (11) are the autonomous control system (ACS) lines for controlling the hydraulic cylinders, (12) are the hydraulic cylinders, and (13) is the preventer channel.

[0050] In the event of fire at the wellhead, all elements of the on-off valves, including the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) and the surface of the temperature-sensitive sensor (9) become heated.

[0051] The temperature-sensitive sensor may contain a pyrotechnic composition with a reduced initiation temperature, for example about 180 ℃, which allows, when it is heated, to transmit an impulse to the pyrotechnic charge (10) via the sensor line (8) . The pyrotechnic charge (10) is a gas-generating mixture that includes components capable of generating an increased amount of gases during combustion, for example, dicyandiamide (DCDA) and / or triaminaguanidine nitrate.

[0052] When ignited, the pyrotechnic charge creates increased or excessive pressure, for example 16 MPa, transmitted via the autonomous control system (ACS) lines for hydraulic cylinders control (11) to the hydraulic lines for controlling cylinders (7) .

[0053] The autonomous control system (ACS) hydraulic cylinder control lines (11) and the standard hydraulic cylinder control lines (7) can be pre-filled with a hydraulic fluid. In the case when the hydraulic cylinder control lines (11) are filled with hydraulic fluid, the hydraulic fluid volume in the autonomous control system (ACS) hydraulic cylinder control lines (11) and in the standard hydraulic cylinder control lines (7) is sufficient to supply the hydraulic cylinders (12) and to move the hydraulic cylinders (12) into the “closed” position.

[0054] When the hydraulic cylinders (12) are switched to the “closed” position, it is possible to block the annular space between the pipe and the casing string and / or to deform the pipe for its sealing and / or to cut the pipe in the preventer channel (13) with sealing or cutting rams (not shown in the layout diagram) and / or to close the preventer channel (13) with blind rams (not shown in the diagram) .

[0055] This way the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) is capable of autonomously, without human involvement, providing the complete sealing of the well in the event of an emergency in the form of a fire and preventing fluid from escaping the well.

[0056] In accordance with the second aspect or variant of the autonomous control system (ACS) , information is provided below on the preferred device embodiment variant.

[0057] Referring to Figure 1 and Figure 3 there is shown a schematic layout diagram of an implementation of an autonomous control system (ACS) in accordance with the present disclosure, and a design variant of the autonomous control system (ACS) respectfully.

[0058] In such an embodiment, the present disclosure is implemented so as to provide for the closing a preventer using an autonomous control system (ACS) according to the present disclosure, which is included in the standard hydraulic control circuit of the preventer.

[0059] As is shown (1) is the remote manual control of the preventer, (2) is the hydraulic control panel at the driller's station, (3) is the preventer, (4) is the circulation system, (5) is the remote hydraulic control panel, (6) is the autonomous control system (ACS) , (7) are the standard hydraulic control lines for the hydraulic cylinders of the hydraulic control system, (8) is the sensor line, (10) is the pyrotechnic charge, (11) is the autonomous control system (ACS) lines for controlling the hydraulic cylinders, (12) is hydraulic cylinders, (13) is the preventer channel, (14) is the mechanical pressure sensor or flow sensor.

[0060] In the event of an emergency fluid discharge at the wellhead when the set pressure and / or flow rate thresholds are exceeded, the mechanical pressure and / or flow sensor (14) is triggered, and this leads to initiation of the pyrotechnic charge (10) .

[0061] The mechanical sensor, in accordance with the present embodiment, may include a membrane, a trigger mechanism and a primer, which are not shown in the present figures.

[0062] In the variant using the primer, when the set pressure or flow parameters of the preventer are exceeded, the sensor mechanism effects the trigger mechanism, which in turn initiates the primer.

[0063] The impulse from the primer is transmitted through the sensor line (8) to the pyrotechnic charge (10) .

[0064] The pyrotechnic charge (10) is preferably a gas-generating mixture, which includes components capable of generating an increased amounts of gases upon combustion, for example, Dicyandiamide (DCDA) and / or Triaminoguanidine nitrate.

[0065] When ignited, the pyrotechnic charge creates excess pressure, for example 16 MPa, transmitted through the autonomous control system (ACS) lines for controlling the hydraulic cylinders (11) to the standard hydraulic lines for cylinders control (7) .

[0066] The autonomous control system (ACS) lines for hydraulic cylinder control (11) and the standard hydraulic lines for cylinders control (7) are pre-filled with hydraulic fluid. The hydraulic fluid in the autonomous control system (ACS) lines for controlling the hydraulic cylinders (11) and the standard hydraulic lines for controlling the cylinders (7) is in sufficient quantity to supply the hydraulic cylinders (12) and move the hydraulic cylinders (12) to the closed position.

[0067] When the hydraulic cylinders (12) are moved to the “closed” position, it is possible to close the annular space between the pipe and the casing string and / or deform the pipe to seal it and / or cut the pipe in the preventer channel (13) with sealing or cutting rams, which are not shown in the present figures, and / or close the preventer channel (13) with blind rams, which not shown in the present figures. Thus, the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) , is capable of sealing the well autonomously, without human involvement or intervention, in the event of an emergency such as excess pressure and / or flow in the preventer channel, and thus preventing fluid from escaping the well under emergency.

[0068] In accordance with the third aspect or variant of the device embodiment, information is provided below on the preferred device embodiment variant determined by the features of the independent claim, which is not intended to limit the scope of the requested protection.

[0069] Referring to Figure 1 and Figure 2 there is shown a schematic layout diagram of an implementation of an autonomous control system (ACS) in accordance with the present disclosure, and a design variant of the autonomous control system (ACS) respectfully.

[0070] In such an embodiment, the present disclosure is implemented so as to provide for the closing a preventer using an autonomous control system (ACS) according to the present disclosure, which is included in the standard hydraulic control circuit of the preventer.

[0071] As is shown, (1) is the remote manual control of the preventer, (2) is the hydraulic control panel at the driller's station, (3) is the preventer, (4) is the circulation system, (5) is the remote hydraulic control panel, (6) is an autonomous control system (ACS) , (7) are the standard hydraulic control lines for the hydraulic cylinders of the hydraulic control system, (8) is the sensor line, (9) is a mechanical or temperature-sensitive temperature sensor, (15) is a tank with expelling gas under excess pressure, (11) is the autonomous control system (ACS) lines for controlling the hydraulic cylinders, (12) are the hydraulic cylinders, and (13) is the preventer channel.

[0072] In the event of fire at the wellhead, all on-off valve elements get heated, including the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) and the surface of the heat-sensitive sensor (9) . The heat-sensitive sensor may contain a pyrotechnic composition with a reduced initiation temperature, for example about 180 ℃, which allows, when it is heated, to transmit an impulse via the sensor line (8) to the on-off valves of the tank under pressure (15) .

[0073] The autonomous control system (ACS) control lines for the hydraulic cylinders (11) and the standard hydraulic cylinder control lines (7) can be pre-filled with hydraulic fluid. In the case when the control lines for the hydraulic cylinders (11) are filled with hydraulic fluid, the hydraulic fluid in the autonomous control system (ACS) hydraulic cylinders control lines (11) and the standard hydraulic cylinder control lines (7) is sufficient to supply the hydraulic cylinders (12) and move the hydraulic cylinders (12) to the “closed” position.

[0074] When the hydraulic cylinders (12) are moved to the “closed” position, it is possible to close the annular space between the pipe and the casing string and / or to deform the pipe for its sealing and / or cut the pipe in the preventer channel (13) with sealing or cutting rams (not shown in the diagram) and / or close the preventer channel (13) with blind rams (not shown in the diagram) .

[0075] Thus, the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) is capable of completely sealing the well, autonomously, without human involvement, in the event of an emergency like a fire and thus preventing fluid from escaping the well under emergency conditions.

[0076] In accordance with the fourth aspect or variant of the device embodiment, information is provided below on the preferred device embodiment variant determined by the features of the independent claim, which is not intended to limit the scope of the requested protection.

[0077] Referring to Figure 1 and Figure 3 there is shown a schematic layout diagram of an implementation of an autonomous control system (ACS) in accordance with the present disclosure, and a design variant of the autonomous control system (ACS) respectfully.

[0078] In such an embodiment, the present disclosure is implemented so as to provide for the closing a preventer using an autonomous control system (ACS) according to the present disclosure, which is included in the standard hydraulic control circuit of the preventer.

[0079] As is shown, (1) is the preventer remote manual control, (2) is the hydraulic control panel at the driller's station, (3) is the preventer, (4) is the circulation system, (5) is the remote hydraulic control panel, (6) is the autonomous control system (ACS) , (7) are the standard hydraulic control lines for the hydraulic cylinders of the hydraulic control system, (8) is the sensor line, (15) is a tank with gas under excess pressure, (11) is the autonomous control system (ACS) lines for controlling the hydraulic cylinders, (12) are the hydraulic cylinders, (13) is the preventer channel, and (14) is a mechanical pressure sensor or a flow sensor.

[0080] In the event of an emergency fluid discharge at the wellhead, surpassing the set pressure and / or flow rate thresholds, a mechanical pressure sensor and / or flow sensor (14) is triggered, which leads to initiation of, for example, on-off valves of a gas tank under excess pressure (15) .

[0081] The mechanical sensor, in accordance with the variants, may contain a membrane, a trigger mechanism and a primer, not shown in the present figures.

[0082] In the primer variant, when the set pressure or flow parameters are exceeded, the sensor mechanism effects the trigger, which in turn initiates the primer. The primer impulse is transmitted through the sensor line (8) to the on-off valve of the tank with excess pressure gas (15) .

[0083] The autonomous control system (ACS) lines for controlling the hydraulic cylinders (11) and the standard hydraulic lines for cylinders control (7) are pre-filled with hydraulic fluid.

[0084] The hydraulic fluid in the lines of the automatic control system for hydraulic cylinders (11) and the standard hydraulic control lines for cylinders (7) is sufficient to supply the hydraulic cylinders (12) and move the hydraulic cylinders (12) to the position “closed” .

[0085] When moving the hydraulic cylinders (12) to the position “closed” , it is possible to block the annular space between the pipe and the casing and / or deform the pipe for its sealing and / or cut the pipe in the preventer channel (13) with sealing or cutting rams, not shown in the diagram, and / or close the preventer channel (13) with blind rams, not shown in the diagram.

[0086] Thus, the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) , is capable of sealing the well, autonomously, without human involvement or intervention, in the event of an emergency in the form of excess pressure and / or flow in the preventer channel and preventing fluid from escaping the well under emergency conditions.

[0087] A specific design feature is that the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) is fitted into the existing hydraulic control circuit of the preventer, which includes the hydraulic control panel at the driller's station (2) , the remote hydraulic control panel (5) .

[0088] The operating principle of the autonomous control system (ACS) (6) is based on the generation of excess pressure using a pyrotechnic mixture of the charge (10) , capable of releasing a sufficient amount of gases during combustion and creating excess pressure in the hydraulic lines (7) , for example about 16 MPa, or using the energy of compressed gas located in a tank under excess pressure (15) , for example about 20 MPa.

[0089] The combustion rate of the pyrotechnic mixture (10) is sufficient to create a minimum working pressure and seal the well using the preventer (3) by means of hydraulic cylinders (10) . This rate can be, for example, 5-10 seconds.

[0090] The gas contained in the tank under excess pressure (15) , to create a minimum working pressure and to seal the well using the preventer (3) by means of hydraulic cylinders (10) is released and rate of the gas release can be, for example, 5-10 seconds.Industrial Applicability

[0091] The present disclosure is directed to an autonomous control system (ACS) for use in conjunction with a hydraulic control circuit of a blowout preventer which includes hydraulic cylinders for occluding flow through the preventer; wherein said autonomous control system (ACS) includes a pyrotechnic charge for creating excess pressure upon combustion to drive the hydraulic cylinders of the preventer, and wherein said pyrotechnic charge is initiated by a temperature-sensitive sensor in the event of a fire at the wellhead.

[0092] Besides, it may be understood that the autonomous control system (ACS) can be reproduced, and can be used in a variety of industrial applications, such as in the field of the oil and gas industry.
