Description

[0001] BONE ADHESIVE MIXING CARTRIDGE

[0002] Field of the invention

[0003] The present invention relates to a bone adhesive mixing cartridge for mixing a bone adhesive powder with a liquid, a bone adhesive mixing kit and a method for preparing a bone adhesive .

[0004] Background of the invention

[0005] The use of a bone adhesive to glue implants in place may be considered as a favorable advancement in the field of implantology . Together with the ability to robustly bond to minerali zed bone tissue and / or to metal , a suitable bone adhesive can act as an initial implant stabili zation glue with reduced detrimental ef fect on the bone while placing of the implant .

[0006] Typically, a bone adhesive comprises at least one dry component which is mixed with a liquid prior to application . Since after mixing of the dry component with the liquid, the bone adhesive hardens within a rather short time scale in the order of minutes , it is preferred to keep the dry component separate from the liquid until mixing can be performed shortly before application of the bone adhesive .

[0007] A package comprising a device for storing, mixing, and administering an adhesive composition is for example described in WO 2021 / 041943 Al . The device comprises a chamber within a

[0008] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 / main body, a barrier, a plunger, a noz zle , and an adhesive composition, wherein the package limits ingress of a contaminating element . The device may comprise a first chamber and a second chamber separated by the barrier, wherein components of the composition may be provided as dry components , such as powder or granules , within the first chamber and the second chamber may comprise an aqueous medium, such as water . Speci fically, pressure is applied to the plunger of the device to breach the barrier, allowing the components of the adhesive composition to come into contact with each other . The device is then placed into an agitator to agitate the content of the device , thereby preparing the adhesive composition . The chamber in which the components of the composition are mixed can be swept by a plunger that empties the chamber by expressing the chamber contents out through an ori fice of the main body to an application site , such as bone , or into a noz zle through which the resulting implantable composition flows to an application site , such as bone .

[0009] Summary of the invention

[0010] When using a bone adhesive to glue an implant at an application site , it is desired to provide the one or more dry components separate from the liquid component before mixing . After bringing the one or more dry components into contact with the liquid component , it is further desired to provide an ef ficient mixing of the components , preferably shortly before application of the bone adhesive . For implants in the oral cavity, i . e . dental implants , respectively, mixing the bone

[0011] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 adhesive can be particularly challenging due to the small amounts of bone adhesive involved therewith .

[0012] It is therefore an obj ect of the invention to provide a bone adhesive mixing cartridge for mixing a bone adhesive powder and a liquid, a bone adhesive mixing kit and a method for preparing a bone adhesive , which at least partially improve the prior art and avoid at least part of the disadvantages of the prior art .

[0013] According to the present invention, this obj ect is achieved by the features of the independent claims . In addition, further advantageous embodiments follow from the dependent claims and the description as well as the figures .

[0014] According to an aspect of the invention, this obj ect is particularly achieved by a bone adhesive mixing cartridge for mixing a bone adhesive powder with a liquid to obtain a bone adhesive , comprising a housing, at least one actuating member supported at the housing and comprising a bearing surface , wherein the at least one actuating member is configured to generate via the bearing surface a compressing and a relaxing motion with respect to an inner space of the housing, wherein the housing comprises an opening for receiving a deformable reservoir with the bone adhesive powder into the inner space of the housing, the bone adhesive mixing cartridge further comprising a gripping device arranged in the housing and configured to grip the deformable reservoir received through the opening .

[0015] The bearing surface of the at least one actuating member may be designed such that the at least one actuating member may act locally or substantially globally on the volume of the

[0016] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 deformable reservoir . The at least one actuating member may act at one or more local positions on the deformable reservoir . The at least one actuating member may act at one or more moving local positions on the deformable reservoir, especially in a peristaltic fashion . The housing may provide a support for the at least one actuating member allowing the at least one actuating member to move with respect to the housing and to thereby exert via the bearing surface an actuating force onto the deformable reservoir . Repeatedly changing the volume of the deformable reservoir can therefore be achieved by the at least one actuating member acting with the bearing surface on the deformable reservoir such that the volume of the deformable reservoir can repeatedly be compressed and relaxed .

[0017] The deformable reservoir may comprise a bone adhesive powder . The liquid, typically water, can be supplied to the deformable reservoir at the required point in time when the bone adhesive is needed, and otherwise be kept separate from the bone adhesive mixing cartridge . The liquid may be supplied from a separate liquid reservoir, such as a syringe , which may be coupled to the de formable reservoir for trans ferring the liquid to the deformable reservoir . After mixing the bone adhesive , the bone adhesive may be extracted from the deformable reservoir for application .

[0018] The reservoir for the bone adhesive powder and the liquid being deformable provides the advantage that a change in volume , especially a volume decrease , upon contact of the bone adhesive powder and the liquid and / or while mixing can be accommodated by the deformable reservoir . The deformability of the reservoir can furthermore be used to repeatedly change the volume of the deformable reservoir by alternatingly compressing and relaxing

[0019] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 the deformable reservoir, respectively, in order to achieve a mixing of the bone adhesive powder with the liquid . In particular, the deformable reservoir may be kneaded for achieving an ef ficient mixing .

[0020] The bone adhesive mixing cartridge may particularly be advantageous for implants in the oral cavity where typically only small amounts of bone adhesives are used . In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge according to the present disclosure is therefore a dental bone adhesive mixing cartridge for mixing at least two components of a dental bone adhesive . In particular, the at least one actuating member and the deformable reservoir may provide ef ficient mixing of a bone adhesive where the volume of the liquid is smaller than the volume of the bone adhesive powder .

[0021] A deformable reservoir containing a bone adhesive powder may be introduced into the housing through the opening . Due to the deformability of the deformable reservoir, a mixing motion imposed to the deformable reservoir may result in displacing the deformable reservoir without ef fectively achieving a kneading of the deformable reservoir and mixing of the components in the deformable reservoir . Likewise , extraction of the mixed bone adhesive from the deformable reservoir may be hampered due to the deformability of the deformable reservoir . By gripping the introduced deformable reservoir, the deformable reservoir can therefore be kept in position while mixing and / or while extracting the bone adhesive from the deformable reservoir, allowing the mixing and / or extraction motion imposed to the deformable reservoir to be applied to the bone adhesive .

[0022] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 The deformable reservoir may comprise a port configured for releasable connection with a liquid reservoir . When introduced into the housing, an end portion of the deformable reservoir which is arranged opposite to the port may be gripped by the gripping device .

[0023] The gripping device may particularly be advantageous for embodiments where the bone adhesive mixing cartridge is reusable . After mixing the bone adhesive and extracting the bone adhesive from the deformable reservoir for application, the deformable reservoir used may be replaced by a new deformable reservoir containing a bone adhesive powder . The new deformable reservoir may again be introduced into the housing through the opening and be gripped by the gripping device .

[0024] In the context of the present disclosure , the term "bone adhesive" shall be understood to comprise not only an adhesive such as a bone glue , but also or alternatively a bone cement . In particular, the bone adhesive may be a composition which is configured to create a bond between bone and bone and / or bone and implant .

[0025] The term "bone adhesive" can also be understood to refer to a bioadhesive or a bioadhesive composition . The bone adhesive according to the present disclosure may be a dental bone cement like structure which is a biocompatible and biodegradable composition that is suitable to j oin two surfaces together where at least one of them is a tissue such as , for example , a living tissue , a bone tissue , an oral soft tissue , or a dental tissue . The bone adhesive according to the present disclosure has the particularity to be osteof riendly and

[0026] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 osteoconductive , providing dental primary stabil ity ( and / or secondary stability) of the dental implant while in contact with at least one tissue and maintaining said stability over time while the bone regenerates and grows around the dental implant . The bone adhesive or bioadhesive will slowly at least partially disappear in favour of the newly grown bone .

[0027] The one or more dry components of the bone adhesive may be in the form of a powder . In particular, the bone adhes ive may be a dual part composition comprising an aqueous solution as first component and a sel f-setting adhesive powder as second component , wherein said sel f-setting adhesive powder comprises , for example , at least a multivalent metal salt and phosphoserine . The multivalent metal salt may comprise , for example , calcium phosphate , for example tetra calcium phosphate ( TTCP ) or tri calcium phosphate ( TCP ) , preferably a- TCP . The sel f-setting adhesive powder may, for example , comprise 50- 80% by weight of TCP or TTCP, phosphoserine and preferably further components like , for example , calcium silicate . In one preferred example , the sel f-setting adhesive powder comprises 65 to 80 % by weight of a-TCP, 20-30% by weight of phosphoserine and 1 to 5 % by weight of calcium silicate . The bone adhesive may be formed by mixing the first component and the second component and allowing the obtained composition suf ficient time to set . Initial setting may typically be achieved within 15 seconds and 90 seconds , and final setting may typically be achieved within 1 to 15 minutes .

[0028] In some embodiments , the one or more dry components of the bone adhesive may be in the form of a powder, wherein the powder comprises loose particles or compressed particles . In some embodiments , the one or more dry components of the bone

[0029] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 adhesive may be in the form of a compressed powder. The powder may be compressed under pressure to obtain a certain density and particle size. For example, the powder can be compressed at a density of about 1.20 g / cm3to about 1.80 g / cm3, preferably at a density of about 1.30 g / cm3to about 1.70 g / cm3, more preferably at a density of about 1.45 g / cm3to about 1.60 g / cm3. For example, the powder can be compressed to obtain a mean particle size of about 0.5 pm to about 30 pm, preferably from about 1 pm to about 20 pm, more preferably from about 3 pm to about 15 pm. The powder can be compressed using, for example, a pressure of about 5 MPa to about 170 MPa, said pressure being dependent from the size and shape of the final object. Said compressed powder may be in the shape of a tablet, a ring, a stack of rings, a sphere, a disc, a cylinder, a tube, a rectangle, a cubic block, a pill, or a cone. Preferably, the dry components of the bone adhesive are compressed into a tablet form. More preferably, the dry components of the bone adhesive are in the form of a loose powder.

[0030] The term "about", as used herein, is intended to provide flexibility to a numerical range endpoint, providing that a given value may be "a little above" or "a little below" the endpoint accounting for variations one might see in the measurements taken among different instruments, samples, and sample preparations. The term usually means within 10%, preferably within 5%, and more preferably within 1 % of a given value or range.

[0031] Preferably, a smaller amount, especially volume, of liquid may be used for the bone adhesive than the amount, especially volume, of the dry component of the bone adhesive. In some embodiments, the volume ratio of the liquid used for the bone

[0032] A23976W0 / 19.09.2025 adhesive to the dry component of the bone adhesive used may be between 1 : 3 and 1 : 6 .

[0033] In some embodiments , the gripping device is arranged at a side of the housing opposite to the opening .

[0034] Thus , the deformable reservoir may be introduced at the opening and an end portion of the de formable reservoir arranged opposite to the opening when introduced to the hous ing may be gripped by the gripping device .

[0035] In some embodiments , the gripping device comprises a first gripper and a second gripper, wherein the first gripper is movable between an open position where a portion of the deformable reservoir is receivable between the first gripper and the second gripper and a closed position where the portion of the deformable reservoir is clamped therebetween .

[0036] The gripping device may therefore be configured to take a defined open position and a defined closed position . In the open position, a deformable reservoir may be received into the housing or be replaced by another deformable reservoir . In the closed position, the deformable reservoir can be kept in position in order to facilitate mixing and / or extraction of the bone adhesive from the deformable reservoir . The first gripper may manually be movable or movable by a drive .

[0037] In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge comprises a first hinge on which the first gripper is pivotably mounted .

[0038] Thus , the gripping device may be reali zed by a s imple hinged pincer-like or pliers-like structure . The first gripper may

[0039] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 comprise an elongated body where an end portion of the elongated body may be mounted on the first hinge .

[0040] In some embodiments , the second gripper is spatially fixed with respect to the housing .

[0041] The second gripper may therefore fixedly be mounted to the housing . The second gripper may al so be integrally formed with the housing or be formed by a portion of the housing, respectively .

[0042] In some embodiments , the second gripper is movable between an open position where a portion of the deformable reservoir is receivable between the first gripper and the second gripper and a closed position where the portion of the deformable reservoir is clamped therebetween .

[0043] Thus , both the first gripper and second gripper may be movable between an open position and a closed position . In particular, the first gripper and the second gripper may be movable in a synchronous or symmetrical fashion, respectively .

[0044] In some embodiments , the second gripper is pivotably mounted on the first hinge .

[0045] In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge comprises a second hinge on which the second gripper is pivotably mounted .

[0046] The first and the second gripper may thus be pivotably mounted on the same hinge or each on separate hinges .

[0047] In some embodiments , a first drivable gripper gearwheel is arranged at the first hinge and a second drivable gripper

[0048] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 gearwheel is arranged at the second hinge , wherein the housing comprises a rotatable rim with an inner toothed profile which engages with the first and second gripper gearwheels , wherein the first gripper and the second gripper are each pivotably mounted with a rim end at the rotatable rim .

[0049] The first gripper may be movable simultaneously with the first gripper gearwheel around the first hinge and the second gripper may be movable simultaneously with the second gripper gearwheel around the second hinge . By driving the first gripper gearwheel and / or the second gripper gearwheel , the rotatable rim may be rotated by way of engagement of the gripper gearwheels with the inner toothed profile of the rotatable rim . By rotating the rotatable rim and due to the mounting of the first and second grippers at the rotatable rim with their rim ends , the first and second gripper may move towards each other, thereby closing a gripping passage formed between the first and second grippers . A portion of a deformable reservoir arranged in the gripping passage may then be gripped . By rotating the rotatable rim in the opposite direction, the gripping passage may be opened in order to release the portion of the deformable reservoir arranged in the gripping passage . Besides gripping a portion of the deformable reservoir arranged between the first and second gripper, it may also be possible to knead a portion of the deformable reservoir arranged between the first and second gripper by repeatedly closing and opening the gripping passage between the first and second gripper . When gripping a portion of the deformable reservoir, the gripping passage may be closed more tightly than when a portion of the deformable reservoir is kneaded . Thus , the first and second gripper may function as grippers clamping a portion of the

[0050] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 deformable reservoir and as actuating members kneading a portion of the deformable reservoir .

[0051] In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge comprises a plurality of rotatable rims each with a first and second gripper pivotably mounted on a first hinge and a second hinge , respectively, and each having a first drivable gripper gearwheel and a second drivable gripper gearwheel arranged at the first hinge and the second hinge , respectively, wherein the first gripper gearwheels and the second gripper gearwheels each engage with the inner profile of the respective rotatable rim, wherein the first and second grippers are each pivotably mounted with a rim end at the respective rotatable rim .

[0052] The rotatable rims may be stacked on top of each other . An end portion of the deformable reservoir may be clamped between the first and second grippers of a first rotatable rim, whereas other portions of the deformable reservoir may be kneaded between first and second grippers of further rotatable rims successively arranged on top of the first rotatable rim .

[0053] In some embodiments , the first and second gripper and the first hinge are integrally formed as a gripping body made of a flexible material , wherein the gripping body is at least partially arranged within a gripping housing which is axially movable relative to the gripping body .

[0054] The gripping body may be made of a plastic . In some embodiments , the gripping body is made of silicone . By moving the gripping housing towards the f irst and second gripper, the first and second gripper may move towards each other such that a gripping passage formed therebetween may be closed and an

[0055] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 end portion of a deformable reservoir arranged in the gripping passage may be gripped .

[0056] In some embodiments , the first and second grippers each comprise a profiled, preferably toothed, gripping surface .

[0057] By using a profiled gripping surface , the reliability of gripping the deformable reservoir can be improved . Further, the required force to press on a portion of the deformable reservoir for gripping may be reduced due to the increased gripping ef ficiency provided by the profiled gripping surface .

[0058] In some embodiments , the first gripper and / or the second gripper exhibit a bar or a plate shape .

[0059] In some embodiments , the gripping device comprises a first gripper roller which is rotatable in a direction to pull a portion of the deformable reservoir away from the opening .

[0060] A gripper roller provides the advantage that a continuous gripping motion can be imposed to the deformable reservoir . Once a portion of the deformable reservoir is gripped, the gripping of the deformable reservoir can be reinforced by further rotating the gripper roller to continue the gripping motion .

[0061] In some embodiments , the first gripper roller is arranged adj acent to a counter-surface which is spatially fixed with respect to the housing, wherein a gripping passage for the portion of the deformable reservoir is formed between the first gripper roller and the counter-surface .

[0062] When introducing a deformable reservoir into the bone adhesive mixing device , it may be delicate to reliably grip a portion

[0063] A23976WO / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 of the deformable reservoir due to its deformability . A well- defined gripping passage provided by the first gripper roller and a counter-surface can therefore improve the gripping reliability since it may be suf ficient that an end portion of the deformable reservoir reaches the gripping passage in order to be gripped by the gripping device .

[0064] In some embodiments , the gripping device comprises a second gripper roller which is rotatable in a direction to pull the portion of the deformable reservoir away from the opening .

[0065] By providing a second gripper roller, the gripping ef ficiency may further be improved .

[0066] In some embodiments , the second gripper roller is arranged adj acent to the first gripper roller such that a gripping passage for the portion of the deformable reservoir is formed between the first gripper roller and the second gripper roller .

[0067] Similar to as described above , the first and second gripper roller may provide a well-defined gripping passage , thereby improving the gripping reliability when a portion of the deformable reservoir enters the gripping device .

[0068] In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge comprises a gripper drive operatively connected with the gripping device and configured to drive the gripping device to execute a gripping motion for gripping the deformable reservoir .

[0069] Thus , a bone adhesive mixing cartridge with a driven gripping device can be provided, which improves automation of the mixing process of the bone adhesive . The gripper drive may be an

[0070] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 electric motor . The gripper drive may be powered by a battery or comprise a connector for electric power supply .

[0071] In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge comprises a trigger device operatively connected with the gripper drive , wherein the trigger device is configured to detect the presence of the deformable reservoir next to or within the gripping device and to activate thereupon the gripper drive .

[0072] Due to the trigger device , the gripping device may not be required to run constantly . Instead, the gripper device can be activated i f required, i . e . when a deformable reservoir which is to be gripped is present . The trigger device advantageously allows to further increase the automation of the mixing process since the gripping device can automatically be activated when introducing a deformable reservoir to the bone adhesive mixing cartridge .

[0073] In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge comprises an activating device operatively connected with the gripper drive and configured to receive a user input , wherein the activating device is configured to activate the gripper drive upon receiving the user input .

[0074] The user input may be a mechanical input from the user . For example , the activating device may comprise an input button which a user may push in order to activate the gripper drive . In a further example , the activating device may receive an electrical input from a control device connectable or connected to the activating device , upon which the activating device may activate the gripper drive .

[0075] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 The gripper drive may be configured to move the first and / or second gripper for embodiments with a first and / or second gripper .

[0076] For embodiments with a first gripper roller, the gripper drive may be configured to rotate the first gripper roller .

[0077] For embodiments with a first and a second gripper roller, the gripper drive may be configured to simultaneously rotate the first gripper roller and the second gripper roller .

[0078] In some embodiments , the gripper drive is configured to receive a stall command and to stall the gripping device thereupon .

[0079] The gripping device may in particular be stalled in a position of the first and / or second gripper roller where the deformable reservoir is gripped . In the stalled position of the gripping device , the kneading of the deformable reservoir may take place .

[0080] In some embodiments , the gripper drive is configured to receive a release command and to open the gripping device thereupon .

[0081] The gripper drive may therefore cause the gripping device to open, such that the deformable reservoir can be released from the gripping device and be replaced . The gripper drive may for example temporarily cause the first and / or second gripper roller to freewheel when a release command is received .

[0082] The stall command and / or release command may be input by a user of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge , for example by suitable input buttons or by a user interface of a control device .

[0083] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing cartridge comprises an operating element arranged at an outer face of the housing and operatively connected with the gripping device , wherein the gripping device is actuatable by the operating element to execute a gripping motion for gripping the deformable reservoir .

[0084] The operating element may be used as an interface to couple the gripping device to an external drive such that the gripping device can be driven . Alternatively, the operating element may be used to manually actuate the gripping device . A user of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge may manually move the operating element and thereby actuate the gripping device between an open position and a closed position . In embodiments with a gripper drive , the operating element may be used to manually actuate the gripping device in case of failure of the gripper drive .

[0085] In some embodiments , the operating element comprises a crank lever .

[0086] A user of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge may use the crank lever to manually actuate the gripping device between an open position and a closed position .

[0087] In some embodiments , the opening of the housing comprises a receiving interface configured for releasable connection with a port interface of the deformable reservoir .

[0088] A deformable reservoir with a port interface can therefore be connected to the housing by the receiving interface after introducing the deformable reservoir into the housing . The deformable reservoir may comprise a port with a port interface

[0089] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 connectable to the receiving interface of the housing . The deformable reservoir may receive the liquid through the port . After mixing, the bone adhesive may be extracted from the deformable reservoir through the port .

[0090] In some embodiments , the receiving interface comprises a thread or a snap fit or a bayonet lock .

[0091] According to a further aspect , the present invention is also directed to a bone adhesive mixing kit comprising the bone adhesive mixing cartridge according to the present disclosure and a deformable reservoir with a port configured for releasable connection with a liquid reservoir and comprising a port interface for releasable connection with a receiving interface of the housing, wherein the deformable reservoir comprises a bone adhesive powder .

[0092] In some embodiments , the port o f the deformable reservoir comprises a first thread for connection with the liquid reservoir and the port interface comprises a second thread for connection with the receiving interface of the housing .

[0093] In some embodiments , the port interface comprises a snap fit or a bayonet lock for connection with the receiving interface of the housing .

[0094] The deformable reservoir may be made of an elastic material , preferably rubber .

[0095] In some embodiments , the bone adhesive mixing kit comprises a liquid reservoir with an outlet and comprising a liquid, wherein the outlet of the liquid reservoir is connectable or connected to the port of the deformable reservoir .

[0096] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 As already described, the volume of the liquid may be smaller than the volume of the bone adhesive powder . The volume ratio of the liquid to the bone adhesive powder is preferably between 1 : 3 and 1 : 6 .

[0097] In some embodiments , the liquid reservoir is a syringe comprising a syringe housing, a plunger axially movable in the syringe housing and a syringe outlet .

[0098] According to a further aspect , the present invention is also directed to a method for preparing a bone adhesive by mixing a bone adhesive powder with a liquid to obtain a bone adhesive , comprising the steps of : providing a bone adhesive mixing kit according to the present disclosure ; introducing the deformable reservoir into the housing of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge ; connecting the port interface of the deformable reservoir with the receiving interface of the housing; gripping the deformable reservoir by the gripping device ; trans ferring the liquid from the liquid reservoir to the deformable reservoir ; mixing the liquid with the bone adhesive powder in the deformable reservoir of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge by the at least one actuating member .

[0099] In some embodiments , the method further comprises the step of connecting the outlet of the liquid reservoir with the port of the deformable reservoir .

[0111] A23976WO / 19.09.2025 the second housing part 11.2 and a port interface 1211 of the deformable reservoir 12. The second housing part 11.2 comprises a liquid reservoir interface 11.22 for releasable connection with the liquid reservoir 100. The housing 11 can be closed by a latch 11.11 of the first housing part 11.1 engaging with a catch of the second housing part 11.2. In some embodiments, the latch 11.11 may be engageable with the port 121.

[0112] The bone adhesive mixing device 10 comprises a gripping device 14 with a first gripper 14.1 mounted on the first housing part 11.1 and a second gripper 14.2 mounted on the second housing part 11.2. The first gripper 14.1 is furthermore pivotably mounted on the hinge 111.

[0113] The first gripper 14.1 and the second gripper 14.2 each comprise a toothed gripping surface 14.111 and 14.211, respectively. By closing the housing 11, the toothed surfaces 14.111 and 14.211 move towards each other and grip an end portion of the deformable reservoir 12 such that the deformable reservoir 12 can be kept in position. After mixing the bone adhesive, the deformable reservoir 12 may be removed from the housing 11 and be replaced with another deformable reservoir containing a bone adhesive powder for another mixing cycle. The bone adhesive mixing device 10 comprises an actuating member 13 in the form of a tensioned arcuate plate supported at the housing 11 and comprising a bearing surface 131 configured for exerting a bias force onto the deformable reservoir 12. The tensioned arcuate plate 13 is configured to generate via the bearing surface 131 a compressing and a relaxing motion with respect to the inner space of the housing 11.

[0114] A23976W0 / 19.09.2025 The deformable reservoir 12 contains a bone adhesive powder . The syringe 100 contains a liquid, such as water, and air before the mixing process starts . By advancing the plunger of the syringe 100 , liquid is trans ferred into the deformable reservoir 12 . After the liquid has been trans ferred into the deformable reservoir 12 , the air i s pushed into the deformable reservoir 12 in order to inflate the deformable reservoir 12 from the shown first volume to a larger second volume against the bias force of the arcuate plate 13 . By releasing the plunger of the syringe 100 , the arcuate plate 13 deforms the deformable reservoir 12 from the second volume back to the first volume exerting a compressive force onto the deformable reservoir 12 . By repeatedly advancing and releasing the plunger of the syringe 100 , the deformable reservoir 12 can be kneaded by expanding and relaxing of the volume of the deformable reservoir 12 .

[0115] Figure 2a shows the interior of an embodiment of a bone adhesive mixing cartridge 20 with a gripping device 24 . The housing 21 of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge 20 is shown with dashed lines . A deformable reservoir 22 is arranged in the housing 21 . The deformable reservoir 22 comprises a port 221 connected with a receiving interface of the housing 21 . The port 221 comprises a thread and is configured for connection with a liquid reservoir, such as a syringe . The bone adhesive mixing cartridge 10 further comprises a drive interface 211 arranged at the housing 21 and configured for connection with a dental handpiece .

[0116] Three actuating members in the form of rollers 23 are arranged within the housing 21 , each on a rotatable shaft supported at the housing 21 . For illustration purposes , only one rotatable

[0117] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 shaft 254 which is rotatable around a rotation axis 232 is shown . The other two rotatable shafts which are not shown are correspondingly designed . The rollers 23 comprise an elliptical cross-section the area of which varies along the longitudinal axes of the rollers 23 for at least two of the rollers 23 . The rollers 23 are each eccentrically mounted on the rotatable shaft ( as recogni zable for the exemplarily shown rotatable shaft 254 ) , in order to execute an eccentric rotary motion . The bone adhesive mixing cartridge 20 comprises a gearing 25 operatively connected to the rollers 23 and to the drive interface 211 . The gearing 25 comprises the rotatable shafts 254 of the rollers 23 , roller gearwheels 253 mounted on the rotatable shafts 254 , a rotatable drive shaft 252 and a drive gearwheel 251 mounted on the drive shaft 252 and engaging with one of the roller gearwheel s 253 . The roller gearwheel 253 shown in Figure 2a engages with the drive gearwheel 251 , whereas the other roller gearwheels not shown in Figure 2a may directly engage with the roller gearwheel 253 shown or indirectly through additional gearwheels not shown in Figure 2a . By driving the drive shaft 252 to execute a rotary motion, the rollers 23 may therefore be driven to execute a combined rotary motion, each around its rotation axis .

[0118] The deformable reservoir 22 is arranged between the rollers 23 . A liquid may be introduced into the deformable reservoir 22 through the port 221 and the bone adhesive may be extracted therethrough after mixing . The deformable reservoir 22 may be made of an elastic material , such as rubber . By inducing a rotary motion of the rollers 23 , the rollers 23 generate via the bearing surfaces 231 a compressing and a relaxing motion with respect to an inner space of the housing 21 between the

[0119] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 bearing surfaces 231 . The rollers 23 thereby act on the deformable reservoir 22 such that the deformable reservoir 22 is repeatedly compressed and relaxed via the bearing surfaces 231 , ef fecting a kneading of the deformable reservoir 22 and mixing of the bone adhesive powder and the liquid contained in the deformable reservoir 22 .

[0120] The two rollers 23 shown at the front part in Figure 2a show a mirrored profile with respect to each other : the area of the elliptical cross-section of one of the rollers 23 increases from a top end to a bottom end of the roller whereas for the other roller, the area of the elliptical cross-section decreases from a top end to a bottom end . The mirrored profile improves the kneading of the deformable reservoir 22 . The third roller 23 shown at the rear part of Figure 2a may have an area of the elliptical cross-section which is constant along the longitudinal axis of the roller 23 or may also have a varying area .

[0121] The bone adhesive mixing cartridge 20 comprises a gripping device 24 arranged at a bottom region of the housing 21 and configured to grip an end portion 222 of the deformable reservoir 22 . The gripping device 24 comprises a first gripper 24 . 1 and a second gripper 24 . 2 which are pivotably mounted on a j oint hinge 241 . The first gripper 24 . 1 and 24 . 2 each comprise an elongated body of a bar or plate shape . The gripping device 24 is therefore reali zed by a hinged pincerlike or pliers-like structure configured to receive the end portion 222 of the deformable reservoir 22 between the first and second grippers 24 . 1 , 24 . 2 in an open position and to clamp the end portion 222 of the deformable reservoir 22 in a closed position of the first and second grippers 24 . 1 , 24 . 2 where the

[0122] A23976W0 / 1 9 . 09 . 2025 first and second grippers 24.1, 24.2 are pivoted towards each other. The first and second grippers 24.1, 24.2 may comprise a profiled, especially toothed surface (not shown in Figure 2a) .

[0123] Figure 2b shows an external view of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge 20 and the drive interface 211 arranged at the housing 21. The deformable reservoir 22 is received in the housing 21 through the opening 212 such that only the port 221 is visible. The port 221 is releasably connected to a receiving interface of the housing 21 by a port interface of the port 221 (not visible in Figure 2b) . The port interface may comprise a second thread, a snap fit or a bayonet lock for connection with the receiving interface of the housing 21.

[0124] Figure 3 shows an embodiment of a bone adhesive mixing cartridge 30 with a gripping device 34. For illustration purposes, the housing and the actuating members are not shown in Figure 3. The gripping device 34 as shown in Figure 3 may for example be used for the embodiment of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge 20 as shown in Figure 2a-b, replacing the embodiment of the gripping device 24 shown therein.

[0125] The gripping device 34 comprises a first gripper roller 34.1 and a second gripper roller 34.2 which are driven by a gripper drive (not shown in Figure 3) . A gripping passage 342 is defined between the first gripper roller 34.1 and the second gripper roller 34.2 such that an end portion 322 of a deformable reservoir 32 introduced into the housing of the bone adhesive mixing cartridge can be introduced into the gripping passage 342 and be gripped therein by the first and second gripper rollers 34.1, 34.2. The first gripper roller

[0126] A23976WO / 19.09.2025 34.1 and second gripper roller 34.2 are rotatable in the directions indicated by the arc-shaped arrows to pull the end portion 322 downwards, i.e. away from the port 321 which may be connected to the opening of the housing. By rotating the first gripper roller 34.1 and the second gripper roller 34.2 in the direction of the arc-shaped arrows, the end portion 322 of the deformable reservoir 32 may therefore be gripped. By continuing the rotative gripping motion, the gripping of the deformable reservoir 32 can be reinforced. The first and second gripper rollers 34.1, 34.2 each comprise a toothed surface.

[0127] The bone adhesive mixing cartridge 30 further comprises a trigger device 36 operatively connected with the gripper drive. The trigger device 36 is embodied as a light barrier comprising an emitter 361 and a receiver 362. Upon introduction of the deformable reservoir 32 into the housing, the trigger device 36 detects the presence of the deformable reservoir 32 next to the gripping device 34 as soon as the end portion 322 crosses the light barrier and activates the gripper drive such that the first and second gripper rollers 34.1, 34.2 start the gripping motion.

[0128] The gripping device 34 can be stalled by the gripper drive upon receiving a stall command in order to keep the first and second gripper rollers 34.1, 34.2 in a position where the end portion 322 of the deformable reservoir 32 is gripped and the deformable reservoir 32 can be kneaded. After mixing of the bone adhesive and conveying the mixed bone adhesive out of the deformable reservoir 32 into the syringe 300, the gripping device 34 can be opened by the gripper drive upon receiving a release command causing the first and second gripper rollers 34.1, 34.2 to freewheel.

[0129] A23976W0 / 19.09.2025 Figure 4 shows an embodiment of a bone adhesive mixing cartridge 40 with a gripping device 44. The housing 41 comprises four housing parts 41.1, 41.2, 41.3, 41.4 which are stacked on top of each other. The housing 41 comprises a bottom cover 411 which is shown axially offset from the housing part 41.4 for illustrative purposes. The housing parts 41.1-41.4 are designed in an essentially similar fashion. Therefore, only the housing part 41.1 is explained in more details. In particular, the housing parts 41.2-41.4 may comprise corresponding components as the ones described in connection with the housing part 41.1. The housing 41 may comprise further housing components such as an opening etc. which are not shown in Figure 4.

[0130] The housing part 41.1 comprises a gripping device 44 with a first gripper 44.1 and a second gripper 44.2 defining a gripping passage 442 therebetween. The first gripper 44.1 comprises a first gripper bar 44.11 which is connected at one end to a first gripper gearwheel 44.12. Likewise, the second gripper 44.2 comprises a second gripper bar 44.21 which is connected at one end to a second gripper gearwheel 44.22. The first gripper gearwheel 44.12 is rotatably mounted on a first gripper wheel axle 44.13 whereas the second gripper gearwheel 44.22 is rotatably mounted on a second gripper wheel axle 44.23. In some embodiments, the first gripper bar 44.11 may be connected at one end to the first gripper wheel axle 44.13 instead of to the first gripper gearwheel 44.12. Likewise, the second gripper bar 44.21 may be connected at one end to the second gripper wheel axle 44.23 instead of to the second gripper gearwheel 44.22.

[0131] A23976W0 / 19.09.2025 The gripper wheel axles 44.13, 44.23 are rotatably mounted in the housing 41 and drivable by a motor (not shown in Figure 4) . By rotation of the first gripper gearwheel 44.12 on the first gripper wheel axle 44.13, the first gripper bar 44.11 is pivoted around the longitudinal axis defined by the first gripper wheel axle 44.13. Accordingly, the second gripper bar 44.21 is pivoted around the longitudinal axis defined by the second gripper wheel axle 44.23 when the second gripper gearwheel 44.22 is rotated on the second gripper wheel axle 44.23. The first housing part 41.1 comprises a rotatable rim 443 with an inner toothed profile which engages with the first and second gripper gearwheels 44.12, 44.22. Further gripper wheel axles 44.33, 44.43 which may for example serve as gripper wheel axles for gripper gearwheels of the second housing part 41.2, are shown in Figure 4. The bone adhesive mixing cartridge 40 may comprise further gripper wheel axles for the third and fourth housing parts 41.3, 41.4 which are not shown in Figure 4 in order to reduce the complexity of the illustration.

[0132] Figure 5 shows the bone adhesive mixing cartridge 40 of Figure 4 in a top view. It can be recognized that the first gripper bar 44.11 is connected at one end to the first gripper gearwheel 44.12 and at a rim end 44.112 to the rim 443. The second gripper bar 44.21 in turn is connected at one end to the second gripper gearwheel 44.22 and at rim end 44.212 to the rim 443. By rotating the first and second gripper gearwheels 44.12, 44.22, the rim 443 rotates due to the engagement of the teeth of the first and second gripper gearwheels 44.12, 44.22 with the inner toothed profile of the rim 443, as symbolized by the two arcuate arrows at the rim 443. Due to connection of the first and second gripper bars

[0133] A23976W0 / 19.09.2025 44.11, 44.21 with the first and second gripper gearwheels

[0134] 44.12, 44.22 at one hand and with the rim 443 on the other hand, the first and second gripper bars 44.11, 44.21 execute a pivoting motion when the rim 443 is rotated by the first and second gripper gearwheels 44.12, 44.22. The first and second gripper bars 44.11, 44.21 are thereby moved from a first position (first and second gripper bars 44.11, 44.21 shown by solid lines) to a second position (first and second gripper bars 44.11, 44.21 shown by dashed lines) decreasing the size of the gripping passage 442 or closing the gripping passage 442, respectively. The gripping passage 442 in the configuration of the first and second gripper bars 44.11, 44.21 being in the first position is pointed to by a solid arrow, whereas the gripping passage 442 in the configuration of the first and second gripper bars 44.11, 44.21 being in the second position is pointed to by a dashed arrow. By decreasing the size of the gripping passage 442, a portion of a deformable reservoir can be gripped between the first and second gripper bars 44.11, 44.21. Furthermore, a portion of the deformable reservoir can be kneaded by repeatedly closing and opening the gripping passage 442.

[0135] The bone adhesive mixing cartridge 40 may for example be operated as follows. Referring to Figure 4 and 5, a deformable reservoir may be introduced into the gripping passage 442. An end portion of the deformable reservoir may be gripped by a first gripper and second gripper of the fourth housing part 41.4 which are embodied in accordance with the gripping device 44 as described in connection with the first housing part 41.1. Other portions of the deformable reservoir may then be kneaded by first and second gripper bars of the first, second and third

[0136] A23976WO / 19.09.2025 housing parts 41.1-41.3 which are embodied in accordance with the gripping device 44 as described in connection with the first housing part 41.1. The first and second gripper bars of the first, second and third housing parts 41.1-41.3 may alternatingly and / or repeatedly be pivoted in order to repeatedly close and open the gripping passage 442, thereby kneading the deformable reservoir and mixing the bone adhesive powder with the liquid contained in the deformable reservoir.

[0137] Figure 6 shows an embodiment of a gripping device 54. The gripping device 54 comprises a first gripper 54.1 and a second gripper 54.2 which are pivotably connected at a first hinge 541. The first and second gripper 54.1, 54.2 as well as the first hinge 541 are integrally formed as a gripping body 543 made of a flexible material, such as silicone. The gripping body 543 is partially arranged within a gripping housing 544 which is axially movable relative to the gripping body 543, as symbolized by the vertical double arrow. By moving the gripping housing 544 upwards in Figure 6, the first and second gripper 54.1, 54.2 move towards each other such that the gripping passage 542 formed therebetween is closed and an end portion of a deformable reservoir arranged in the gripping passage 542 is gripped. The first and second gripper 54.1, 54.2 each comprise a profiled gripping surface 54.111, 54.211 to improve gripping of the deformable reservoir.
