Description

Searcher Resource AllocationBackground

[0001] A user equipment (UE) may be equipped with multiple searchers configured to perform measurements for radio resource management (RRM) . Under conventional circumstances, the UE may be equipped with two searchers to perform measurements on multiple carriers. However, it has been identified that there are scenarios where it may be beneficial for the UE to have more than two searchers. Accordingly, there is a need for enhancements to support the implementation of more than two searchers at the UE.Summary

[0002] Some example embodiments are related to an apparatus having processing circuitry configured to process, based on signaling received from a base station, a component carrier (CC) configuration comprising multiple CCs corresponding to one or more cells of a network, determine whether a number of searchers to be used by a user equipment (UE) is more than two based on one or more predetermined conditions and, when the number of searchers to be used is more than two searchers, perform measurements corresponding to the one or more cells using more than two searchers.Brief Description of the Drawings

[0006] Fig. 4 shows a method for performing radio resource management (RRM) according to various example embodiments.Detailed Description

[0007] The example embodiments may be further understood with reference to the following description and the related appended drawings, wherein like elements are provided with the same reference numerals. The example embodiments introduce enhancements for searcher resource allocation. As will be described in detail below, the example embodiments introduce enhancement to support the implementation of three or more searchers at a user equipment (UE) .

[0008] The example embodiments are described with regard to a UE.However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0009] The example embodiments are also described with regard to a network that includes fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) radio access technology (RAT) . In some embodiments, the network may also include Long-Term Evolution (LTE) RAT and / or legacy RATs (e.g., third generation (3G) RAT, etc. ) . However, any reference to a particular RAT is not intended to limit the  example embodiments in any way and may include further evolutions of cellular networks, e.g., 5G-Advanced, 6G, etc. The example embodiments may be utilized with any network that may establish a connection to a UE and exchange information and data with the UE.

[0010] The example embodiments are further described with carrier aggregation (CA) and dual connectivity (DC) mechanisms where multiple carriers may serve the UE. In CA and DC, The UE may be configured with a primary cell group (PCG) and a secondary cell group (SCG) . The PCG may include a primary cell (PCell) and one or more secondary cells (SCells) for communication between the UE and the network. The PCell serves a primary component carrier (PCC) and the SCells serve one or more secondary component carriers (SCCs) . In addition, the SCG may include a primary secondary cell (PSCell) and one or more SCells for communication between the UE and the network. The PSCell serves a primary secondary component carrier (PSCC) and the SCells serve one or more SCCs.

[0011] The UE may be equipped with multiple searchers. A "searcher" generally refers to a mechanism used for measuring one or more carriers. Each searcher may use a certain amount of the UE′s finite resources (e.g., radio frequency (RF) processing resources, baseband processing resources, etc. ) . Because the UE has a limited number of searchers, the UE cannot simultaneously perform measurements on measurement objects (MOs) of all configured CCs during every monitoring occasion. These MOs may include synchronization signal block (SSBs) , channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS) , etc. However, any reference to a searcher is not intended to limit the example  embodiments in any way, different entities may refer to similar concept by a different name.

[0012] The example embodiments are also described with regard to a carrier specific scaling factor (CSSF) . A CSSF may indicate how searchers are to be split among carriers. For example, in a scenario where the UE is configured with two searchers, the CSSF may be mapped to a configuration where a first searcher is to measure MOs of the PCC while a second searcher is divided among MOs of the PSCC and any configured SCCs.

[0013] According to some aspects, the example embodiments introduce enhancements to support the implementation of three or more searchers at the UE. Each of these example enhancements may be used independently from one another, in conjunction with currently implemented searcher mechanisms, in conjunction with future implementations of searcher mechanisms or independently from other search mechanisms.

[0014] Fig. 1 shows an example network arrangement 100 according to various example embodiments. The example network arrangement 100 includes a UE 110. The UE 110 may be any type of electronic component that is configured to communicate via a network, e.g., mobile phones, tablet computers, desktop computers, smartphones, phablets, embedded devices, wearables, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, etc. In an actual network arrangement, any number of UEs may be used by any number of users. Thus, the example of a single UE 110 is merely provided for illustrative purposes.

[0015] The UE 110 may be configured to communicate with one or more networks. In the example of the network arrangement 100,  the network with which the UE 110 may wirelessly communicate is a 5G NR radio access network (RAN) 120 and a long-term evolution (LTE) 122 RAN. However, the UE 110 may also communicate with other types of networks (e.g., 5G cloud RAN, a next generation RAN (NG-RAN) , a legacy cellular network, a wireless local area network (WLAN) , etc. ) and the UE 110 may also communicate with networks over a wired connection. With regard to the example embodiments, the UE 110 may establish a connection with the 5G NR RAN 120 and  / or the LTE RAN 122. Therefore, the UE 110 may have, at least, a 5G NR chipset to communicate with the NR RAN 120 and an LTE chipset to communicate with the LTE RAN 122.

[0016] The 5G NR RAN 120 and the LTE RAN 122 may be a portion of a public land mobile network (PLMN) that may be deployed by a network carrier (e.g., Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. ) . Each RAN may include, for example, access nodes or base stations (Node Bs, eNodeBs, HeNBs, eNBS, gNBs, gNodeBs, macrocells, microcells, small cells, femtocells, etc. ) that are configured to send and receive traffic from UEs that are equipped with the appropriate cellular chip set.

[0017] The UE 110 may connect to the 5G NR-RAN 120 via the gNB 120A and / or the gNB 120B. The gNBs 120A and 120B may be configured with the necessary hardware (e.g., antenna array) , software and / or firmware to perform massive multiple in multiple out (MIMO) functionality. Massive MIMO may refer to a base station that is configured to generate a plurality of beams for a plurality of UE. During operation, the UE 110 may be within range of a plurality of gNB. Thus, either simultaneously or alternatively, the UE 110 may connect to the 5G NR-RAN 120 via the gNBs 120A and 120B. In the present example, it may be considered that the gNB 120A is part of a PCG and the gNB 120B  is part of SCG. Thus, in DC operation, the UE 110 may be simultaneously connected to gNB 120 A (PCG) and gNB 120B (SCG) . In this example, it may be considered that the gNB 120A is the PCell and the gNB 120B is the PSCell. Reference to two gNBs 120A, 120B is merely for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may apply to any appropriate number of gNBs. Further, the UE 110 may communicate with the eNB 122A of the LTE-RAN 122. In some examples, the eNB 122A may be part of the PCG or SCG and used for downlink and / or uplink synchronization with respect to the 5G NR-RAN 120 connection.

[0018] Any association procedure may be performed for the UE 110 to connect to the 5G NR-RAN 120. For example, as discussed above, the 5G NR-RAN 120 may be associated with a particular cellular provider where the UE 110 and / or the user thereof has a contract and credential information (e.g., stored on a SIM card) . Upon detecting the presence of the 5G NR-RAN 120, the UE 110 may transmit the corresponding credential information to associate with the 5G NR-RAN 120. More specifically, the UE 110 may associate with a specific node (e.g., the gNB 120A) . However, as mentioned above, reference to the 5G NR-RAN 120 is merely for illustrative purposes and any appropriate type of node may be used with any appropriate type of RAN.

[0019] The network arrangement 100 may also include a cellular core network 130, the Internet 140, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) 150, and a network services backbone 160. The cellular core network 130 may be considered to be the interconnected set of components that manages the operation and traffic of the cellular network. The cellular core network 130  also manages the traffic that flows between the cellular network and the Internet 140.

[0020] The IMS 150 may be generally described as an architecture for delivering multimedia services to the UE 110 using the IP protocol. The IMS 150 may communicate with the cellular core network 130 and the Internet 140 to provide the multimedia services to the UE 110. The network services backbone 160 is in communication either directly or indirectly with the Internet 140 and the cellular core network 130. The network services backbone 160 may be generally described as a set of components (e.g., servers, network storage arrangements, etc. ) that implement a suite of services that may be used to extend the functionalities of the UE 110 in communication with the various networks.

[0021] Fig. 2 shows an example UE 110 according to various example embodiments. The UE 110 will be described with regard to the example network arrangement 100 of Fig. 1. The UE 110 may include a processor 205, a memory arrangement 210, a display device 215, an input / output (I / O) device 220, a transceiver 225 and other components 230. The other components 230 may include, for example, Tx chains, antenna panels, an audio input device, an audio output device, a power supply, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the UE 110 to other electronic devices, etc.

[0022] The processor 205 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines of the UE 110. For example, the engines may include a searcher resource allocation engine 235. The searcher resource allocation engine 235 may perform various operations  such as, but not limited to, generating searcher capability information, deriving a CSSF and determining when to use three or more searchers. These and other operations are described in greater detail below.

[0023] The above referenced engine 235 being an application (e.g., a program) executed by the processor 205 is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The functionality associated with the engine 235 may also be represented as a separate incorporated component of the UE 110 or may be a modular component coupled to the UE 110, e.g., an integrated circuit with or without firmware. For example, the integrated circuit may include input circuitry to receive signals and processing circuitry to process the signals and other information. The engine may also be embodied as one application or separate applications. In addition, in some UEs, the functionality described for the processor 205 is split among two or more processors such as a baseband processor and an applications processor. The example embodiments may be implemented in any of these or other configurations of a UE.

[0024] The memory arrangement 210 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the UE 110. The display device 215 may be a hardware component configured to show data to a user while the I / O device 220 may be a hardware component that enables the user to enter inputs. The display device 215 and the I / O device 220 may be separate components or integrated together such as a touchscreen.

[0025] The transceiver 225 may be a hardware component configured to establish a connection with the 5G NR RAN 120, the LTE RAN 122, a legacy RAN (not pictured) , a WLAN (not pictured) , etc. Accordingly, the transceiver 225 may operate on a variety of different frequencies or channels (e.g., set of consecutive frequencies) . The transceiver 225 includes circuitry configured to transmit and / or receive signals (e.g., control signals, data signals) . Such signals may be encoded with information implementing any one of the methods described herein. The processor 205 may be operably coupled to the transceiver 225 and configured to receive from and / or transmit signals to the transceiver 225. The processor 205 may be configured to encode, decode and / or process signals (e.g., signaling from a base station of a network) for implementing any one of the methods described herein.

[0026] Fig. 3 shows an example base station 300 according to various example embodiments. The base station 300 may represent the gNB 120A, gNB 120B, eNB 122A or any other type of access node through which the UE 110 may establish a connection and manage network operations.

[0027] The base station 300 may include a processor 305, a memory arrangement 310, an input / output (I / O) device 315, a transceiver 320, and other components 325. The other components 325 may include, for example, an audio input device, an audio output device, a battery, a data acquisition device, ports to electrically connect the base station 300 to other electronic devices and / or power sources, transceiver chains, antenna elements, antenna panels, etc.

[0028] The processor 305 may be configured to execute a plurality of engines for the base station 300. The engines may perform various operations related to the example embodiments introduced herein. The above noted engines being an application (e.g., a program) executed by the processor 305 is only an example. The functionality associated with the engines may also be represented as a separate incorporated component of the base station 300 or may be a modular component coupled to the base station 300, e.g., an integrated circuit with or without firmware. For example, the integrated circuit may include input circuitry to receive signals and processing circuitry to process the signals and other information. In addition, in some base stations, the functionality described for the processor 305 is split among a plurality of processors (e.g., a baseband processor, an applications processor, etc. ) . The example embodiments may be implemented in any of these or other configurations of a base station.

[0029] The memory arrangement 310 may be a hardware component configured to store data related to operations performed by the base station 300. The I / O device 315 may be a hardware component or ports that enable a user to interact with the base station 300.

[0030] The transceiver 320 may be a hardware component configured to exchange data with the UE 110 and any other UEs in the network arrangement 100. The transceiver 320 may operate on a variety of different frequencies or channels (e.g., set of consecutive frequencies) . Therefore, the transceiver 320 may include one or more components to enable the data exchange with the various networks and UEs. The transceiver 320 includes  circuitry configured to transmit and / or receive signals (e.g., control signals, data signals) . Such signals may be encoded with information implementing any one of the methods described herein. The processor 305 may be operably coupled to the transceiver 320 and configured to receive from and / or transmit signals to the transceiver 320. The processor 305 may be configured to encode, decode and / or process signals (e.g., signaling from a UE) for implementing any one of the methods described herein.

[0031] Fig. 4 shows a method 400 for performing radio resource management (RRM) according to various example embodiments. The method 400 is described from the perspective of the UE 110 and includes enhancements to support the implementation of three or more searchers.

[0032] In 405, the UE 110 transmits capability information to a base station of a network (e.g., gNB 120A, gNB 120B, eNB 122A, etc. ) The capability information may indicate that the UE 110 supports using more than two searchers. In some examples, the UE 110 may explicitly indicate how many searchers the UE 110 supports (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. ) . This capability may be provided using more than one bit where each value of the more than one bit is associated with a number of searchers. To provide some non-limiting examples, 00 may indicate that only one searcher is supported, 01 may indicate that two searchers are supported and 11 may indicate that three searchers are supported. However, this is just one example, and the UE 110 may explicitly indicate how many searchers the UE 110 supports in any appropriate manner. In other examples, the UE 110 may only indicate whether or not the UE 110 supports three searchers. This capability may be provided using one bit where a first  value (e.g., 0) indicates that three searchers are not support and a second value (e.g., 1) indicates that three searchers are supported. However, this is just one example, and the UE 110 may indicate whether or not the UE 110 supports three searchers in any appropriate manner.

[0033] In one approach, the capability information may be reported on a per-UE basis. That is, the example capability information introduced herein may be applicable to the UE itself and not any particular configuration. For example, the UE 110 may report an explicit number of searchers supported by the UE 110. In another example, the UE 110 may report whether or not the UE 110 supports three searchers.

[0034] In another approach, the capability information may be reported on a per band combination basis. For instance, in accordance with CA or DC, the UE 110 may report or advertise supported band combinations. For example, the UE 110 may report an explicit number of searchers supported for a particular band combination. In another example, the UE 110 may report whether or not the UE 110 supports three searchers for a particular band combination.

[0035] In another approach, the capability information may be provided on a per CC combination basis. That is, the example capability information introduced herein may be applicable to a specific CC combination. For example, the UE 110 may report an explicit number of searchers supported for a particular CC combination. In another example, the UE 110 may report whether or not the UE 110 supports three searchers for a particular CC combination.

[0036] In another example, the capability information may be provided on a per frequency range (FR) combination basis (e.g., frequency range 1 (FR1) , frequency range 2 (FR2) , etc. ) . That is, the example capability information introduced herein may be applicable to a specific FR combination (e.g., FR1 and FR1, FR1 and FR2, FR2 and FR2, etc. ) . For example, the UE 110 may report an explicit number of searchers supported for a particular FR combination. In another example, the UE 110 may report whether or not the UE 110 supports three searchers for a particular FR combination.

[0037] In some examples, the capability information may be associated with a maximum number of serving cells and / or CCs. For instance, the UE 110 may report that more than two searchers are supported for up to a maximum number of serving cells and / or CCs (X) . After this capability is reported by the UE 110, if the UE 110 is configured with a number of serving cells or CCs that exceed the maximum value (X) , the UE 110 may disable the use of more than two searchers. In this scenario, the UE 110 may use the legacy approach to determine how one or two searchers are to be used for RRM.

[0038] In 410, the UE 110 receives a CC configuration from the network. The CC configuration may include a PCC served by a PCell and a PSCC served by a PSCell. The PCC and the PSCC may be in in FR1 and / or FR2, although typically the PCC will be in FR1. The CC configuration may additionally include SCCs from cells of the PCG and / or the SCG.

[0039] According to some aspects, the example embodiments introduce a trigger condition for whether the UE 110 is to activate more than two searchers. That is, in some examples,  even if the UE 110 supports more than two searchers, the UE 110 may not use more than two searchers if the trigger condition is not satisfied. Specific examples of trigger conditions are described in detail below after the method 400.

[0040] In 415, the UE 110 determines whether a trigger condition to activate more than two searchers is satisfied. If the trigger condition is satisfied, the method 400 continues to 420.

[0041] In 420, the UE 110 determines an MO configuration for the CCs configured in 410. For instance, the UE 110 may receive MO configuration information for the CCs from the network. However, the UE 110 may not be able to measure all MOs corresponding to the configured CCs simultaneously. As such, the UE 110 may derive a CSSF which dictates the CC′s MO the UE 110 will measure at a given time. In other words, the CSSF is a scaling factor applied to the measurement period of the corresponding MO. The CSSF may be mapped to a particular searcher configuration. Thus, the UE 110 may know how to use the more than two activated searchers based on the CSSF.

[0042] In 425, the UE 110 performs measurements on the CCs using more than two searchers based on the MO configuration. The searcher number correlates to the measurement period. That is, if the number of searchers is (Y) the UE 110 may measure Y CCs simultaneously. To provide a non-limiting example, if the UE 110 has FR1 PCC, FR2 PSCC and 5 FR2 SCC to measure, the UE 110 may use one measurement period (T) for the PCC, one measurement period (T) for the PSCC and each FR2 SCC measurement period may be represented by number of SCCs*T where one searcher is shared amongst the SCCs (5*T in this example) .

[0043] To provide another non-limiting example, if three searchers are used, the PCC may have one dedicated searcher in NR CA, NR DC and evolved universal terrestrial radio access (E-UTRA) -NR DC (NE-DC) . The E-UTRA refers to LTE technology and NE-DC refers to a feature that includes both LTE and 5G NR connectivity. Continuing with this non-limiting example, the PSCC may have one dedicated searcher in NR-DC, EN-DC and evolved non-standalone DC (NE-DC) .

[0044] In another non-limiting example, if three or more searchers are to be used and the UE 110 has FR2 SCCs to measure, the FR2 SCC may only use up to M searchers where M is less than or equal to 2. The other SCCs may share the remaining searcher resources.

[0045] Returning to 415, if the trigger condition is not satisfied, the method 400 continues to 430. In 430, the UE 110 determines an MO configuration for the CCs configured in 410. In 435, the UE 110 performs measurements on the CCs using two searchers or one searcher based on the MO configuration. The method 400 is only an example and the operations described for the method 400 may be performed in any appropriate order.

[0046] In some example embodiments, the UE 110 may use more than two searchers when the UE 110 supports a per-FR measurement gap (MG) capability.

[0047] In some example embodiments, the UE 110 may use more than two searchers when there is no MG configured for measurement on target serving CCs and the UE 110 is operating on FR1 CCs and FR2 CCs in CA or DC (with or without LTE connectivity (e.g., EN-DC, etc. ) ) . In some examples, when this  condition is applied then a single searcher may be deployed for FR2 CCs and other searched (e.g., two or more) may be used for FR1 serving CCs.

[0048] In some example embodiments, the UE 110 may use more than two searchers when there is no MG configured for measurement on target serving CCs and the UE 110 is operating on FR1 CCs in CA or DC (with or without LTE connectivity) . In some examples, when this condition is applied, more than two searchers may be applied to FR1 serving CCs measurements.

[0049] In some example embodiments, the UE 110 may use more than two searchers when the UE 110 is configured with an FR1 and FR2 combination and per-FR2 or per-UE MG. In some examples, one searcher may be allocated to FR2 serving CC measurement with MG and FR1 CCs measurement may use the other searchers (e.g., two searchers) .

[0050] In some example embodiments, the UE 110 may not use more than two searchers when the UE 110 is only configured with FR2 carriers. Alternatively, if more than two searchers are activated, FR2 serving CC measurements may not use more than two searchers.

[0051] In some example embodiments, the UE 110 may always use two searchers when more than two searchers are activated when the UE 110 supports per-FR MG but the serving CCs or cells is greater than independentGapConfig-maxCC-r17 IE or if the UE 110 supports per-FR MG but the UE 110 disabled per-FR MG.

[0052] As mentioned above, according to some aspects, when the UE 110 supports more than two searchers, the UE 110 may use more than two searchers when one or more of the following  trigger conditions are met. Otherwise, the UE 110 may use two or fewer searchers. However, the example embodiments are not limited to these conditions and the UE 110 may use more than two searchers based on any appropriate trigger condition.

[0053] In one example, the trigger condition may indicate that the UE 110 is in a high mobility status. This trigger condition may include the UE′s measurement result variance of a serving cell is above a threshold for a certain time duration. The measurement variance may be based on reference signal received power (RSRP) , reference signal received quality (RSRQ) , signal-to-interference noise ratio (SINR) , a combination thereof or any other appropriate type of measurement. The threshold may be hard encoded in 3GPP Standards, configured by the network or based on any other appropriate factor.

[0054] In another example, the trigger condition may indicate that the UE 110 is subject to an event that may cause the UE 11o to experience a connectivity issue. To provide some non-limiting examples, event may be radio link failure (RLF) , out of order (OOO) event, radio resource control (RRC) reestablishment, a handover, SCell addition, SCell activation, PSCell addition and PSCell activation. The UE 110 may use more than two searchers to speed up the procedures associated with these events. The type of event that may serve as a trigger condition may be hard encoded in 3GPP Standards, configured by the network or based on any other appropriate factor.

[0055] In another example, the trigger condition may be that the network has indicated to the UE 110 that more than two searchers are to be used. The network may want to configure the UE 110 to use more than two searchers to speed up the  measurements and procedures to be performed by the UE 110. The network may provide this indication to the UE 110 via RRC, a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) , physical layer (PHY) signaling or in any other appropriate manner. However, there may be a scenario where the network provides this indication but the UE 110 does not apply more than two searchers because there is some other condition or factor that prohibits the UE 110 from using more than two searchers.

[0056] In another example, the trigger condition may be based on serving cell quality falling below a threshold. To provide some non-limiting examples, the serving cell quality may be based on RSRP, RSRQ or SINR measurements. The threshold may be hard encoded in 3GPP Standards, configured by the network or based on any other appropriate factor.
