[0002] The present invention generally relates to automated diagnostics for dermatology, in particular at the point-of-care.

Claims1. A system for collecting and storing a skin sample (1) of a test subject, the system comprising: a collection device (3) comprising an engaging segment (31), said engaging segment (31) configured to collect the skin sample (1) from the test subject; and a cartridge (5) configured to receive the skin sample (1) after collection; wherein the engaging segment (31) is configured to collect the skin sample (1) by scraping the skin sample (1) from the test subject; wherein the cartridge (5) comprises a cartridge container (50) configured to contain the skin sample (1).

2. The system according to the preceding claim, wherein the engaging segment (31) comprises grooves (312) and wherein the collection device (3) is configured such that the skin sample (1) is collected in the grooves (312).

The system according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the engaging segment (31) comprises a sharp edge (314) configured to dislodge the skin sample (1) from the test subject; wherein the engaging segment (31) further comprises a concave section (318) defining a collection space (316), wherein the concave section (318) ends at the sharp edge (314) and is configured to collect the skin sample (1) in the collection space (316).

The system according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the cartridge (5) comprises a cartridge inlet (54) configured to allow the skin sample (1) enter the cartridge (5); wherein the cartridge (5) comprises a cartridge lid (52) and wherein the cartridge lid (52) is configured to assume an open position, in which the cartridge lid (52) is configured to allow access to the cartridge inlet (54) and a closed position, in which the cartridge lid (52) is configured to block access to the cartridge inlet (54).

The system according to the preceding claim, wherein the cartridge lid (52) comprises the cartridge container (50); wherein the cartridge lid (52) comprises a lid cover (53) and wherein the lid cover (53) is configured to assume an open position, in which the lid cover (53) is configured to allow access to the cartridge container (50) and a closed position, in which the lid cover (53) is configured to block access to the cartridge container (50);wherein the cartridge (5) is configured to receive the skin sample (1) from the collection device (3) by: optionally, transitioning the lid cover (53) from the closed position to the open position; dislodging the skin sample (1) from the collection device (3) into the cartridge container (50); transitioning the lid cover (53) from the open position to the closed position.

6. The system according to claim 4, wherein the cartridge lid (52) comprises an adhesive element (51) and wherein the cartridge lid (52) is configured to receive the skin sample adhered to the adhesive element (51) from the collection device (3).

The system according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the system further comprises a transfer kit (7) and wherein the transfer kit (7) is configured to receive the skin sample (1) from the collection device (3) and to provide the skin sample (1) to the cartridge (5); and wherein the transfer kit (7) comprises a transfer container (70) configured to contain the skin sample (1).

The system according to the preceding claim, wherein the transfer kit (7) is configured to receive the skin sample (1) from the collection device (3) into the transfer container (70); wherein the transfer container (70) contains a receiving medium (10) and wherein the transfer kit (7) is configured to receive the skin sample (1) within the receiving medium (10) to form a sample mixture (12), said sample mixture (12) comprising the skin sample (1) and the receiving medium (10); wherein the transfer kit (7) is configured to receive a received portion of the collection device (3) in the transfer container (70) such that relative motion between the collection device (3) and the transfer container (70) is allowed while the received portion is received in the transfer container (70); wherein relative motion between the transfer container (70) and the collection device (3), while the received portion is received in the transfer container (70), causes the skin sample (1) to be dislodged from the collection device (3); wherein the cartridge (5) and the transfer kit (7) are configured such that the skin sample (1) is transferable from the transfer kit (7) to the cartridge (5) by providing, e.g., by dripping, at least a portion of the sample mixture (12) from transfer kit (7) into the cartridge container (50).

The system according to any of the 2 preceding claims, wherein the transfer kit (7) comprises a gathering tool (76) configured to collect the skin sample (1) contained in the transfer container (70); wherein the transfer kit (7) is configured such that the gathering tool (76) is receivable, at least in part, in the transfer container (70) such that relative motion between the gathering tool (76) and the transfer container (70) is allowed while the gathering tool (76) is received, at least in part, in the transfer container (70); wherein the transfer kit (7) is configured such that relative motion between the gathering tool (76) and the transfer container (70), while the gathering tool (76) is received, at least in part, in the transfer container (70), allows the gathering tool (76) to collect the skin sample (1) contained in the transfer container (70); wherein the cartridge (5) is configured to receive the skin sample (1) from the gathering tool (76).

10. The system according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the cartridge container (50) comprises a sample compartment (504) configured to accommodate a metered volume of a sample mixture (12); wherein the cartridge container (50) comprises an overflow compartment (506) configured to accommodate excess sample mixture (12); wherein the overflow compartment (506) is configured to accommodate an overflow volume of the sample mixture (12) that overflows from the sample compartment (504).

11. A method for collecting and storing a skin sample (1) of a test subject, the method comprising: collecting the skin sample with an engaging segment (31) of a collection device (3) (1) from the test subject; and receiving the skin sample in a cartridge (5) after collection; wherein collecting the skin sample comprises scraping the skin sample (1) from the test subject with the engaging segment (31); wherein the method comprises containing the skin sample (1) in a cartridge container (50) of the cartridge (5).

12. The method according to the preceding claim, wherein the engaging segment (31) comprises grooves (312) and wherein the method comprises collecting the skin sample (1) in the grooves (312).

The method according to any of the 2 preceding claims,wherein the engaging segment (31) comprises a sharp edge (314) configured to dislodge the skin sample (1) from the test subject; and wherein the engaging segment (31) further comprises a concave section (318) defining a collection space (316), wherein the concave section (318) ends at the sharp edge (314) and is configured to collect the skin sample (1) in the collection space (316).

The method according to any of the 2 preceding claims, wherein the method comprises allowing the skin sample (1) enter the cartridge (5) through a cartridge inlet (54) of the cartridge (5); wherein the cartridge (5) comprises a cartridge lid (52) and wherein the cartridge lid (52) assumes an open position, in which the cartridge lid (52) allows access to the cartridge inlet (54) and a closed position, in which the cartridge lid (52) blocks access to the cartridge inlet (54).

The method according to the preceding claim, wherein the cartridge lid (52) comprises the cartridge container (50); wherein the cartridge lid (52) comprises a lid cover (53) and wherein the lid cover (53) assumes an open position, in which the lid cover (53) allows access to the cartridge container (50) and a closed position, in which the lid cover (53) blocks access to the cartridge container (50); wherein the method comprises receiving the skin sample (1) in the cartridge (5) from the collection device (3) by: optionally, transitioning the lid cover (53) from the closed position to the open position; dislodging the skin sample (1) from the collection device (3) into the cartridge container (50); transitioning the lid cover (53) from the open position to the closed position.

16. The method according to claim 14, wherein the cartridge lid (52) comprises an adhesive element (51) and wherein the method comprises the cartridge lid (52) receiving the skin sample adhered to the adhesive element (51) from the collection device (3).

The method according to any of the 3 preceding claims, wherein the method comprises receiving the skin sample (1) into a transfer kit (7) from the collection device (3) and providing the skin sample (1) from the transfer kit (7) to the cartridge (5); andwherein the method comprises containing the skin sample (1) in a transfer container (70) of the transfer kit (7).

18. The method according to the preceding claim, wherein receiving the skin sample (1) into the transfer kit (7) comprises receiving the skin sample (1) from the collection device (3) into the transfer container (70); wherein the transfer container (70) contains a receiving medium (10) and wherein the method comprises receiving the skin sample (1) within the receiving medium (10) contained in the transfer container (70) to form a sample mixture (12), said sample mixture (12) comprising the skin sample (1) and the receiving medium (10); wherein the method comprises receiving a received portion of the collection device (3) in the transfer container (70) such that relative motion between the collection device (3) and the transfer container (70) is allowed while the received portion is received in the transfer container (70); wherein the method comprises effecting a relative motion between the transfer container (70) and the collection device (3), while the received portion is received in the transfer container (70), to dislodge the skin sample (1) from the collection device (3); wherein the method comprises transferring the skin sample (1) from the transfer kit (7) to the cartridge (5) and wherein said transferring comprises providing, e.g., dripping, at least a portion of the sample mixture (12) from transfer kit (7) into the cartridge container (50).

19. The method according to any of the 2 preceding claims, wherein the method comprises collecting, with a gathering tool (76) of the transfer kit (7), the skin sample (1) contained in the transfer container (70); wherein the gathering tool (76) is received, at least in part, in the transfer container (70) such that relative motion between the gathering tool (76) and the transfer container (70) is allowed while the gathering tool (76) is received, at least in part, in the transfer container (70); wherein the method comprises effecting relative motion between the gathering tool (76) and the transfer container (70), while the gathering tool (76) is received, at least in part, in the transfer container (70), to collect, with the gathering tool (76), the skin sample (1) contained in the transfer container (70); wherein the method comprises receiving the skin sample (1) in the cartridge (5) from the gathering tool (76).

20. The method according to any of the 6 preceding claims,wherein the method comprises accommodating a metered volume of a sample mixture (12) in a sample compartment (504) of the cartridge container (50); wherein the method comprises accommodating excess sample mixture (12) in an overflow compartment (506) of the cartridge container (50); wherein the method comprises overflowing of an overflow volume of the sample mixture (12) from the sample compartment (504) and being accommodated thereafter in the overflow compartment (506).

21. Use of the system according to any of the claims 1 to 10, for collecting, storing and / or analyzing a skin sample (1) of a test subject.
