Description

AERODYNAMIC WHEEL RIM FOR ENHANCING AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF VEHICLETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a rim for a vehicle wheel, in particular for an automotive, and to a vehicle comprising such a rim. More precisely, the present disclosure relates to an aerodynamic wheel rim for enhancing an aerodynamic performance of a vehicle.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wheels and rims of a vehicle typically constitute about 20%of the overall drag of the vehicle, especially of a motor vehicle such as an automotive. Furthermore, rims play an important role in generation of aerodynamic lift and / or downforce.

[0003] At the same time, the shape of the rims is an important design element. Therefore, rim designers require some design freedom and do not want to be limited in view of functional aspects.

[0004] There is a need for further improvements, and it is an object of the present disclosure to provide a rim for vehicle wheels which improves an aerodynamic performance of the vehicle. It is a further object to provide a solution that allows adequate design-freedom. It is a further object to provide a solution that has a simple configuration.SUMMARY

[0005] The above-mentioned objects are solved by a rim for a vehicle wheel according to claim 1.

[0006] Further embodiments of the solution are disclosed in the dependent claims and the specification.

[0007] According to an aspect, the rim comprises a plurality of fixed, non-deformable spokes, which can also be described as stationary spokes. The rim further comprises a plurality of flexibly deformable spokes. In a simple embodiment, the rim can comprise one fixed, non-deformable spoke and one flexibly deformable spoke.

[0008] The fixed non-deformable spokes and the flexibly deformable spokes are arranged alternately on the rim. That means that, viewed in a circumferential direction, a fixed non-deformable spoke follows a flexibly deformable spoke which is followed by a fixed non-deformable spoke. Gaps are formed between adjacent spokes in at least a state in which the rim is not moving, rotating or spinning, such as a rest state or rest position.

[0009] The flexibly deformable spokes are configured to flexibly deform in shape upon a physical force acting on the rim thereby at least partially reducing the gaps. In other words, the flexibly deformable spokes can flexibly deform thus at least partially closing the gaps between adjacent flexibly deformable and fixed non-deformable spokes.

[0010] Herein, flexibly deformable can mean that the respective spoke is reversibly deformable, i.e. can return to its original shape when no physical force or a physical force below a certain threshold acts on the rim.

[0011] By means of the solution open areas between adjacent spokes of a rim can be at least partially closed at high speed. This beneficially reduces drag and stabilizes the vehicle.

[0012] At the same time, at lower speeds the open areas between adjacent spokes increase a fan effect. This fan effect of air axially blown out of the rim helps to reduce lift and increases downforce. Also, the increased air flow is advantageous for cooling the brakes, especially during and immediately after braking.

[0013] An advantage of this embodiment is that no additional elements or components are needed to open and close the gaps. There is no need to arrange flaps or sensors or hinges to the rim. By omitting respective additional components unwanted vibrations caused by such components can be avoided, which at the same time avoids need for dampening such vibrations. Also, motors or other actuating devices for moving the flexibly deformable can be omitted. Thus, also un-sprung mass and overall weight of the rim can be advantageous compared to known prior art rims.

[0014] Another beneficial aspect can be that the rim configuration is simple (non-complex) in its configuration. No sensors are attached to elect sensor data which have to be processed into signals to drive the driving device for opening or closing the gaps.

[0015] In the sense of this disclosure “alternately” means that after a flexibly deformable spoke a fixed non-deformable spoke is arranged so that a flexibly deformable spoke is arranged between two fixed non-deformable spokes. Therefore, every second spoke can be a flexibly deformable spoke. In other words, half of the spokes can be flexibly deformable spokes.

[0016] In an alternative embodiment a number of spokes which is less than half of the spokes are flexibly deformable spokes.

[0017] The flexibly deformable spokes can preferably be considered as spokes which comprise a material which allows a movement under specific circumstances. In other words, the spokes comprise or consist of a to a certain extent flexible or elastic material.

[0018] In this context a flexible material can be considered as a material that allows a movement under the impact of physical forces, namely typical physical forces which occur during driving the vehicle above a predetermined speed.

[0019] The flexibly deformable spokes can be configured to increasingly deform in accordance with an increasing physical force acting on the rim. The size of the gaps can thus be dependent on the extent of the physical force acting on the vehicle and especially acting on the vehicle wheel. For example, the size of the gaps can increase with increasing speed of the vehicle to reduce drag and can decrease with decreasing vehicle speed to achieve maximum drag at lower speeds, especially at cornering and at the same time allowing air flow for brake cooling. The flexibly deformable spokes can be configured to move from an open position, in which the gaps are fully open, to a closed position, in which the gaps are fully closed, and vice versa depending on physical forces acting on the rim. Preferably, the flexibly deformable spokes are configured to move from the open position to the closed position and vice versa only by physical forces acting on the rim, without any active actuation. In the open position, the flexibly deformable spokes can be arranged to provide an air flow through the gaps.

[0020] In the closed position, the flexibly deformable spokes can be arranged to prevent airflow through the gaps.

[0021] The rim according to the disclosure allows the adapting of its aerodynamics, especially of the downforce. The aerodynamic lift can be reduced by means of the movability of the flexibly deformable spokes between the open position and the closed position as well as by influencing the air flow. Therefore, the aerodynamic performance of the whole vehicle can be improved. Reduction of the air flow increases the high-speed performance of the vehicle, while increasing the air flow at lower speeds increases the downforce and brake cooling.

[0022] The physical force can be a centrifugal force acting on the rim. Centrifugal force acting on the rim is caused by rotation of the wheel when the vehicle moves. It increases and decreases in accordance with the vehicle speed. The centrifugal force acting on the rim is dependent on the speed with which the rim is turning. Thus, the flexibly deformable spokes will move to close and open the gaps depending on how fast the rim is turning and how fast the vehicle is driving.

[0023] The flexibly deformable spokes can be in a rest position (non-deformed state) until a predetermined value of centrifugal force is acting on the rim. Values of centrifugal force higher than the predetermined value will force the flexibly deformable spokes to deform to reduce or close the gaps.

[0024] This embodiment provides improved aerodynamic benefits at different speeds, in which different aerodynamic requirements are desirable without the need of electronics like sensors and / or driving elements, e.g., motors.

[0025] For example, at low speeds, in which a lower centrifugal force is acting on the rim, the flexibly deformable spokes can leave the gaps at least partially open to provide an air flow through the gaps. The air flow reduces the aerodynamic lift and increases the downforce of the vehicle. The lift of the vehicle while driving occurs typically because air collects in the wheel arch, which acts like an air cushion. This air cushion disturbs the aerodynamic benefits of the vehicle, especially the downforce because it acts against the downforce.

[0026] Therefore, the increase of downforce is advantageous e.g. during corner driving to enhance the grip of the vehicle. Therefore, the cornering performance is increased. Non-limiting examples for low speeds can be speed values below 100 km / h, preferably below 90 km / h, more preferably below 80 km / h.

[0027] In addition, the air in the wheel arch is warmed up by while braking due to the heat of the brakes. If the air cannot escape to the outside, the brakes cannot cool down because the hot air in the wheel arch does not allow any fresh cool air to come in.

[0028] By increasing the gaps, hot air can flow to the outside and fresh cool air can flow into the wheel arch to help cooling down the brakes.

[0029] At high speed, in which –compared to the value of centrifugal force at low speeds, a high value of centrifugal force is acting on the rim –the flexibly deformable spokes can be in the closed position and at least reduce or completely prevent air flow through the opening. This reduced or prevented air flow reduces drag which is important at high speeds to achieve a highest possible speed and reduces energy consumption. The reduced or prevented air flow occurs because the air which is flowing from the front to the back of the vehicle cannot flow into the wheel arc due to the closed flexibly deformable spokes. The air flows past the rim to the rear and cannot get into the wheel arch,

[0030] Compared to the examples listed above regarding low speeds, non-limiting examples for high speeds can be speed values above 90 km / h, preferably above 100 km / h, more preferably above 120 km / h.

[0031] The flexibly deformable spokes can be configured to completely close the gaps upon a predetermined physical force.

[0032] The flexibly deformable spokes can be configured to completely close the gaps upon a vehicle speed of at least 90 km / h, preferably at least 100 km / h, more preferably at least 120 km / h.

[0033] The flexibly deformable spokes can be configured to twist upon a physical force acting on the rim. Preferably, the flexibly deformable spokes can twist about a radial axis.

[0034] Also in this embodiment, the specific spoke design can be chosen freely. The only requirement is that the internal material and mass distribution of each spoke and especially of each flexibly deformable spoke allows desired twisting.

[0035] The fixed non-deformable spokes and / or the flexibly deformable spokes can be attached to a central wheel rim base and to an outer ring free of any mechanical hinges and / or dampers and / or springs.

[0036] The fixed non-deformable spokes and / or the flexibly deformable spokes can be blades. Blades can improve the air flow through the openings and especially the brake cooling effect which is caused by the air flow. By means of a blade configuration, the air in the wheel arch can be additionally sucked to the outside.

[0037] The flexibly deformable spokes can each have a non-centered mass distribution inside their structure.

[0038] A predetermined specific mass distribution of the flexibly deformable spokes, especially a non-centered mass distribution, can allow and even support the desired movability of the flexibly deformable spokes in accordance with physical forces acting on the rim. The centrifugal force can act on each flexibly deformable spoke and cause a twist / bending in accordance with the chosen mass distribution. This twist / bending leads to the effect that the open or closed position is reached.

[0039] The flexibly deformable spokes can be configured to deform and at least partially close the gaps by rotating, at least in a portion thereof.

[0040] The flexibly deformable spokes can each be attached at first end towards a center of the rim and can be free, in other words not attached, at an opposite second end. Such an arrangement can be advantageous for achieving the desired flexible deformability.

[0041] At least some of the fixed non-deformable spokes and / or at least some of the flexibly deformable spokes can differ with respect to their size and / or their shape. The fixed non-deformable spokes can differ among each other or can be similar to each other. The flexibly deformable spokes can differ among each other or can be similar to each other. The flexibly deformable spokes can differ from the fixed non-deformable spokes. Differences in size and / or shape can allow different spoke and rim designs and can help to achieve a uniform outer surface of the rim in the closed state of the gaps.

[0042] The flexibly deformable spokes can each have a bigger size, especially a larger circular arc portion, than the fixed non-deformable spokes. This embodiment for example allows to cover bigger gaps to adapt the achievable aerodynamic effects.

[0043] At least the flexibly deformable spokes can support air flow through the gaps in a state in which the gaps are at least partially open, in particular can promote an axial air flow through the gaps. Axial air flow can reduce aerodynamic lift which is negatively affected by air accumulation in the wheel arch.

[0044] The flexibly deformable spokes can comprise a material which allows a movement of the flexibly deformable spokes to close and open the gaps.

[0045] The flexibly deformable spokes can comprise a material which is such flexibly deformable that the above-mentioned movement is possible under the influence of a physical force, especially the centrifugal force. On the other side, the material preferably is sufficiently stiff and strong so as to withstand typical forces acting on the rim e.g. while driving.

[0046] A further aspect of the present invention is a vehicle, especially a motor vehicle comprising a rim as described herein. The embodiments and advantages of the rim also apply analogously to the vehicle and vice versa. Embodiments, features and technical effects described with regard to the plurality of spokes can apply to all or only individual spokes and vice versa.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0047] For a better understanding of embodiments of the invention, reference will now be made, purely by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals designate corresponding elements or sections throughout.

[0048] In the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a section of a rim, especially of the spokes of a  rim, according to the invention; Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the spokes of the rim according to the invention,  wherein the flexibly deformable spokes are arranged in an open position; and Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the spokes of the rim according to the invention,  wherein the flexibly deformable spokes are arranged in a closed position.DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

[0049] Various examples of embodiments of the present invention will be explained in more detail by virtue of the following embodiments illustrated in the figures and / or described below.

[0050] Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a section of a rim 100 according to an embodiment. The rim 100 can be –but is not limited to –a rim 100 for a (not shown) vehicle wheel, especially for a motor vehicle such as a car.

[0051] The rim 100 comprises a plurality of fixed non-deformable spokes 102. In Fig. 1, only three fixed spokes 102 are shown.

[0052] Furthermore, the rim 100 comprises a plurality of flexibly deformable spokes 104. In Fig. 1, also only three flexibly deformable spokes 104 are shown.

[0053] The spokes 102, 104 extend radially from a center 106 to an outer side 108 of the rim 100.

[0054] As can be seen in Fig. 1, the fixed spokes 102 and the flexibly deformable spokes 104 are arranged alternately on the rim 100. Between two fixed spokes 102, openings or gaps 110 are formed. The flexibly deformable spokes 104 are arranged to cover the gaps 110.

[0055] In this regard, the flexibly deformable spokes 102 are deformable so that they can move from an open position to a closed position and vice versa.

[0056] The moving from the open to the closed position and vice versa occurs depends on physical forces acting on the rim 100. Here, the physical force is the centrifugal force acting on the rim 100 while turning.

[0057] In Fig. 1 the open position of the flexibly deformable spokes 104 is shown. That means that the flexibly deformable spokes 104 are only partially covering the gaps 110. Therefore, an airflow is allowed and provided through the gaps 110.

[0058] This airflow advantageously affects the aerodynamics of the rim 100 during driving of the vehicle. Especially the downforce and more preferably the aerodynamic lift is positively affected.

[0059] At lower speeds, for example at speeds lower than 100 km / h, the airflow transfers air from the (not shown) wheel arch to the outside and therefore reduces an air cushion inside the wheel arch to improve the aerodynamic parameters, especially for cornering.

[0060] Moreover, the airflow through the openings 110 has a beneficial effect on the brake cooling of the vehicle, because while the heated air can flow to the outside, fresh and especially cool air can flow to the brakes.

[0061] The movement of the flexibly deformable spokes 104 is preferably realized by a twist of the flexibly deformable spokes 104 partially around an axis of rotation A. The axis of rotation A extends radially from the center 106 to the outer side 108 of the rim 100 as shown in Fig. 1.

[0062] To allow the flexibly deformable spokes 104 to twist partially around the axis of rotation A, the flexibly deformable spokes 104 preferably comprise a material which on the one hand is such flexible to allow a twist and on the other hand is strong and stiff enough to withstand the physical forces which typically occur on rims 100. The latter is to ensure that the rim 100 will not damage while driving.

[0063] One end 112, preferably the end of the flexibly deformable spokes 104 which is arranged at the center 106 of the rim 100, is rigidly attached at the center 106 of the rim 100.

[0064] The other end 114 is preferably not fixed to a part of the rim 100 to allow and improve the twist around the axis of rotation A.

[0065] As can be seen further regarding Fig. 1, the flexibly deformable spokes 104 are configured as fan blades to support the airflow through the gaps 110. That means the flexibly deformable spokes 104 are arranged in an angle that the flexibly deformable spokes 104 act like a fan and push or pull (depending on the arrangement of the flexibly deformable spokes 104) the air through the gaps 110.

[0066] Alternatively or additionally, the flexibly deformable spokes 104 can comprise a bended structure to achieve the fan blade effect as described below. For example, the flexibly deformable spokes 104 can be shaped like aircraft wings or turbine blades.

[0067] Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the fixed spokes 102 and the flexibly deformable spokes 104 of the rim 100. It is noted that not all parts of the rim 100 are shown as the main focus is on the spokes 102, 104.

[0068] However, it will be understood that the parts not shown, such as the rim base and others, are also part of the rim 100 according to the invention.

[0069] The flexibly deformable spokes 104 according to the embodiment of Fig. 2 are arranged in the open position to provide an airflow though the gaps.

[0070] Fig. 2 visualizes the fan-like arrangement of the flexibly deformable spokes 104 to support the airflow through the gaps 110.

[0071] Furthermore, the embodiment described in Fig. 2 corresponds to the rim 100 described in Fig. 1 in terms of design and function, so that reference is made in this respect to the rim described in Fig. 1.

[0072] Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the fixed spokes 102 and the flexibly deformable spokes 104 of the rim 100, wherein the flexibly deformable spokes 104 are arranged in the closed position.

[0073] As can be taken from the embodiment of Fig. 3, the gaps 110 are totally covered by the flexibly deformable spokes 104 and therefore closed.

[0074] Due to the closed gaps 110, the airflow through the gaps is prevented.

[0075] The movement from the open position to the closed position occurs due to the twist around the axis of rotation A. The twist is realized by a non-centered mass distribution of the flexibly deformable spokes 104.

[0076] If the speed of the vehicle and therefore the centrifugal force acting on the rim 100 increases, the flexibly deformable spokes 104 will turn around the axis of rotation A and close the gaps 110.

[0077] Vice versa, if the speed of the vehicle decreases and the centrifugal force acting on the rim 100 decreases as well, the flexibly deformable spokes 104 will twist in the other direction and open the gaps 110 (see Figs. 1 and 2) to allow the airflow.

[0078] Furthermore, the embodiment described in Fig. 3 corresponds to the rim 100 described in Figs. 1 and 2 in terms of design and function, so that reference is made in this respect to the rim described in Figs. 1 and 2. List of reference signs
