Vehicle wheel construction process

An improved process for permanently attaching an overlay to a wheel disc, wherein the overlay is aligned and spaced apart from the wheel disc. A mold is created by a combination of the overlay, wheel disc and localized nests that engage at predetermined times during foam filling to close the mold. The mold is adequately sealed so that there is no foam leakage as the foam expands to fill the mold and, therefore, no final trimming of excess foam is required. The improved process is capable of accommodating a wheel having turbine openings therein.

Light-weight vehicle wheels with carbon fiber inserts

Application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer structures to metal vehicle wheels is effective in reducing the mass of the wheel while retaining suitable stiffness in the wheel structure. For maximum effect the reinforced polymer structure and the metal wheel must operate cooperatively. Because of the wide range of operating temperatures experienced by wheels and the large difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between metals and carbon fiber reinforced composites attachment of the polymer structure to the wheel by adhesive alone is problematical. However a wheel with an effective and durable reinforcement may be fabricated by confining, through mechanical interference, the reinforced polymer in a cavity in or on the spoke and by preheating the wheel before curing the polymer.

Vent system for an axle and hub assembly

A vent system for a wheel hub comprising a first filtered vent at the wheel end cavity and a second vent formed by a one-way, pressure relief valve venting the axle tube to atmosphere. The vent system defines a vent path from the wheel end cavity through a first, preferably filtered, vent into the axle tube then through a second check valve connecting the axle tube to atmosphere. A porous material is positioned to cover the vent passage at the wheel end cavity for allowing a flow of gases to enter and exit the vent passage while preventing liquids and other contaminants from traveling therethrough. The porous material is held in place over the vent by a snap ring or other suitable retention system disposed within the vented plug member. The second axle tube vent is disposed along the axle tube to vent the tube itself to atmosphere with pressure relief

Method of adhering decorative wheel cover to automobile wheel

A method of applying a decorative wheel cover to a wheel rim is provided. An uncured precursor composition having a quantity of spacer particles therein is applied to the rear face of the wheel cover or an outboard surface of the wheel rim, and the wheel cover and rim are then press-fit together, sandwiching the precursor composition therebetween. The precursor composition is preferably a moisture-cured silicone composition. The wheel cover is press-fit to the wheel rim until further compression is prevented due to the presence of the spacer particles. The resulting precursor composition layer has a uniform thickness and is cured to provide an adhesive layer having the corresponding uniform thickness. A kit for practicing the method, as well as a wheel are also provided.
