Abstract

In a method for determining nitrogen oxides and ammonia in the exhaust gas of a vehicle, the vehicle having a nitrogen oxide sensor, measured values of the nitrogen oxide sensor are received. It is determined whether the measured values have an increasing curve. If the measured values have an increasing curve, a lambda value is taken as the basis for determining whether the measured values of the nitrogen oxide sensor are representative of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas or whether the measured values of the nitrogen oxide sensor are representative of ammonia in the exhaust gas. Furthermore, until a specified termination condition is met, additional measured values of the nitrogen oxide sensor are assigned to nitrogen oxides or ammonia according to the previous determination as to whether the measured values of the nitrogen oxide sensor are representative of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas or whether the measured values of the nitrogen oxide sensor are representative of ammonia in the exhaust gas, and an information signal is transmitted which comprises information as to whether the additional measured values of the nitrogen oxide sensor continue to be assigned to nitrogen oxides or ammonia.
