Abstract
Description
[0001] Title of the invention
[0002] Ventilation system for a personal protection system
[0003] Description
[0004] Technical field
[0005] The invention relates to shelter systems with multiple rooms for disaster situations. The shelters are designed to allow several people to remain there for an extended period of time. In particular, the invention relates to a ventilation system for such a shelter system.
[0006] State of the art
[0007] Disaster shelters should be equipped so that residents can live there for extended periods (e.g., several days or even weeks) in an emergency. It is possible that residents will not see daylight during this time.
[0008] A shelter for people is described in US patent 2009 / 217930 A1 (Holley et al.). It has several separable rooms and can serve as a disaster shelter. The rooms are air-conditioned with a ventilation system. A lighting control system allows for pre-programmed lighting scenarios (light temperature, color). Furthermore, the humidity is regulated by a programmed control system over a 24-hour period.
[0009] Another personnel shelter is known from US 2023 / 052761 (Hubbard). It is located underground and has several rooms. A ventilation system supplies the rooms with air. Furthermore, an automated lighting control system is provided to automatically switch the lights on and off as needed.
[0010] The JP 3-240.194 U (Building System Co.) shows a protective structure that is placed inside residential buildings. It has, for example, two separable rooms if needed and can

[0012] October 28, 2025: Patent and trademark attorneys will be able to live safely in the building in the event of an earthquake. A ventilation system is designed to promote sleep through all five senses.
[0013] US Patent 2016 / 106056 A1 (Piccioni) describes a shelter for animals or humans that provides protection against natural disasters and acts of war. It is anchored to the ground but can also be located underground. It includes a ventilation system and lighting control. The lighting control is intended to regulate the day-night rhythm to control the occupants' biological clocks.
[0014] Sleep research has shown that scents can influence falling asleep. US 2022 / 313945 A1 (Lazarovich) describes a Pavlovian sleep conditioning cell with scent conditioning. The ventilation system has an integrated scent dispenser. A sensor measures the person's physiological parameters and triggers the scent dispenser when the person is in a hypnagogic state, i.e., the state just before falling asleep. After conditioning, the user can use the scent diffuser to
[0015] Disadvantages of the current state of the art:
[0016] Spending several days or even weeks in a bunker without daylight is inherently stressful for the occupants. It is also known that the circadian rhythm shifts over time when there is no daylight and no structured routine. Circadian lighting control can stabilize the occupants' day / night rhythm. However, the occupants of a shelter still experience internal stress that disrupts a healthy sleep rhythm.
[0017] Description of the invention
[0018] The object of the invention is to create a personal protection system belonging to the aforementioned technical field, which is also habitable for a longer period of time.
[0019] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0020] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys The solution to the problem is defined by the features of claim 1. According to the invention, the personal protection system has at least two separable, separately ventilated rooms. The ventilation system comprises the following components: a) A fan with an air inlet and an air outlet; b) At least one supply air distribution system connected to the air outlet of the fan to supply air to the ventilated rooms; c) At least two fragrance containers with different fragrances; d) At least one controllable dispenser to dispense the at least two fragrances from the fragrance containers into the supply air distribution system; e) At least one time-programmable control unit to control the dispensing of the at least two fragrances on a 24-hour cycle.
[0021] The fan is normally powered by a motor. However, it can also be designed so that it can be operated manually in an emergency.
[0022] The supply air distribution system is connected directly or indirectly (e.g., via a gas filter) to the fan's air outlet. It comprises at least one, but usually two or more, pipes or air ducts to transport the air from the fan to the at least two rooms requiring ventilation. The supply air distribution system includes all air ducts and any 1:n branches leading from the fan's air outlet to the rooms.
[0023] The ventilation system has at least two fragrance containers with different fragrances. The fragrance containers are connected to at least one controllable dispenser. This dispenser introduces the at least two fragrances from the fragrance containers into the supply air distribution system.
[0024] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0025] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys The time-programmable control unit regulates the release of at least two fragrances in a 24-hour cycle. This means that the fragrance release schedule repeats every day. This does not preclude the possibility that the exact same fragrance program is not run every day. Within the scope of the invention, it is also possible, for example, for weekdays to have a different program than weekends or holidays.
[0026] Advantages
[0027] The ventilation system according to the invention reduces the subliminal physical stress on the residents in the personal protective equipment facility. Suitable fragrances can be used, for example, to prepare the resident for sleep time. Similarly, during the day, a specific activity can be signaled via the sense of smell, such as a period of concentrated work or a break. This can be achieved using odor conditioning as described in scientific studies (see, e.g., US 2022 / 313945 A1, Lazarovich).
[0028] The inventive system has the further advantage of being able to accommodate the different behavioral patterns of different resident groups. For example, in an emergency, it may be important that certain residents are always active (performing tasks, monitoring the system, caring for others, etc.). This means that not everyone goes to sleep or wakes up at the same time. By being able to release at least two different fragrances, for example, into different rooms and / or at different times, this diversity and group-specific adaptation is made possible.
[0029] The inventive scent control system can even be used to stabilize the circadian rhythm, particularly the sleep-wake cycle. It can be combined with circadian light control. Overall, this improves the quality of life in a personal shelter.
[0030] Special design type No. 2:
[0031] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0032] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the fragrances are drug-free. This means that no narcotic substances are used to induce sleep. This ensures that the residents' health is not impaired by side effects of active ingredients.
[0033] If a hospital is operated within the personal protection facility, it may well make sense to use narcotic substances for the patients in one room. The invention therefore does not preclude the use of fragrances containing medicinal substances (sleeping pills).
[0034] According to a first preferred variant of special embodiment No. 2, at least one of the fragrance substances is a relaxation fragrance substance.
[0035] The relaxing fragrance can be obtained, for example, through sleep conditioning, as described in US 2022 / 313945 A1 (Lazarovich).
[0036] According to a second preferred variant of special embodiment No. 2, at least one of the fragrance substances is an activating fragrance substance.
[0037] Special design type No. 3:
[0038] In a specific configuration, the ventilation system of the personal protection system has at least two fragrance containers connected to at least one controllable dispenser. The controllable dispenser then introduces either one fragrance or the other into the supply air distribution system according to its programming. This configuration allows two fragrances to be dispensed using only one dispenser.
[0039] The simplest version is suitable for personal protection systems where all rooms are treated with only one fragrance at a specific time. This means that the different fragrances are distributed throughout the rooms at different times via a single dispenser.
[0040] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0041] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys It is entirely possible to provide multiple dispensers, each with at least two fragrance containers. This allows even larger personal protection systems to be ventilated in a variety of ways, in accordance with the invention.
[0042] Special design type No. 4:
[0043] In another configuration, the ventilation system of the personal protective equipment (PPE) has a supply air distribution system with at least two distribution ducts and at least two dispensers, with one of the controllable dispensers connected to each of the at least two distribution ducts. This has the advantage that, for example, two different rooms of the PPE can be supplied with fragrances completely independently of each other. The same different fragrances can be provided in both dispensers. However, it is also possible for the dispensers to distribute completely different fragrances.
[0044] It is also possible that the supply air distribution system has additional distribution ducts to which no dispenser is connected. This allows, for example, a hygiene room (washroom, toilet) to be kept free of fragrances. This means that no dispenser is connected to the distribution duct leading to the hygiene room.
[0045] Special design type No. 5:
[0046] A particular design is characterized by the fact that the supply air distribution system forms at least one 1:n branch, where one branch of the 1:n branch is connected to the air outlet of the fan, and where n branch arms (where n is an integer greater than 1) supply air to the different rooms. The I m branch is therefore, in its simplest case, a 1:2 branch (e.g., a Y-branch with one branch and two arms).
[0047] The number n can correspond to the number of ventilated rooms in the personal protection system. In this case, the 1:n branch is advantageously located in the same room as the fan (e.g., in a machine room). It is also advantageous if, in such a supply air distribution system, the dispensers are located on the arms of the 1:n branch.
[0048] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0049] October 28, 2025 patent and trademark attorneys are connected, so that the dispensers can also be serviced centrally (e.g. in the machine room).
[0050] According to a first preferred variant, at least one dispenser can be connected to the stem of the 1:n branch.
[0051] According to a second preferred variant, at least one dispenser can be connected to each arm of the 1:n branch. Each arm of the 1:n branch supplies a portion of the rooms.
[0052] The first and second preferred options can also be combined.
[0053] The 1:n branching allows for both high flexibility in distributing different fragrances to different rooms and the central arrangement of all dispensers. The 1:n branching is, for example, located in the machine room together with the fan.
[0054] Special design type No. 6:
[0055] According to a specific design, the control unit has at least two separately programmable memories to dispense the two fragrances at two different time intervals. These memories can be implemented as two separate memory areas or memory locations within a single large physical storage unit. Alternatively, the two memories can be located in two separate devices. For example, each dispenser could be equipped with a number of memory locations and programmed separately.
[0056] Special design type No. 7:
[0057] In another embodiment of the invention, the control unit has a memory for storing a defined sleep time.
[0058] The programming of scents to signal bedtime or wake-up time can then be done relative to the saved bedtime. You only need to set the bedtime to program the scent control.
[0059] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0060] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys This design is well suited for a central control system that manages all dispensers.
[0061] Special design type No. 8:
[0062] In a special design, at least one distribution channel is free of dispensers, so that fragrances never enter this distribution channel and the rooms connected to it.
[0063] Special design type No. 9:
[0064] According to another design, separate exhaust ducts lead from each room to an exhaust outlet. This ensures that fragrances from one room cannot indirectly enter another.
[0065] If several rooms have the same function for the occupants of the personal protection system and are therefore supplied in the same way (i.e. with a common time program and identical fragrances), then it may also be useful for two or more rooms to be connected via an exhaust duct.
[0066] Special design type No. 10:
[0067] In a special design, a gas filter is installed upstream of the fan. The air supplied from outside the personal protective equipment is cleaned in the air filter, for example, of harmful aerosols or toxic gases.
[0068] Special design type No. 11:
[0069] Furthermore, according to one design, an explosion protection valve can be installed upstream of the fan. An explosion protection valve keeps externally impacting pressure waves away from the rooms containing the personal protection system. The explosion protection valve also protects the ventilation system (fan, dispenser, etc.) from damage caused by pressure surges.
[0070] Special design type No. 12:
[0071] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0072] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys According to a specific design, the personal shelter is a windowless, in particular an underground, concrete bunker. This makes the personal shelter especially suitable for wartime events or major disasters.
[0073] Special design type No. 13:
[0074] According to a particular design, the personal protection system has an entrance area with a room serving as a dirt-lock.
[0075] Special design type No. 14:
[0076] According to a specific design, the personal protection system has a separate room, the machine room, which houses essentially all the components of the ventilation system. These include the fan and the dispensers. The central control unit for the ventilation system can also be located in the machine room, if such a control unit is provided. If 1:n branches are provided, these are also located in the machine room.
[0077] Special design type No. 15:
[0078] According to a specific design, the personal protection system has at least four rooms. These rooms include, in particular, a sleeping room, a workroom, a kitchen, and a hygiene room. If required, several rooms of a specific type (sleeping room, workroom, etc.) can also be provided.
[0079] Ventilation system:
[0080] The invention also relates to a ventilation system that can be used in a personal protection system with at least two separable, separately ventilated rooms. The ventilation system comprises the following components: a) A fan (9) with an air inlet and an air outlet; b) At least one supply air distribution system connected to the air outlet of the fan to supply air to the ventilated rooms;
[0081] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0082] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys c) At least two fragrance containers for different fragrances; d) At least one controllable dispenser to introduce the at least two fragrances from the fragrance containers into the supply air distribution system; e) At least one time-programmable control unit (14) to control the release of the at least two fragrances in a 24-hour rhythm.
[0083] The fragrance containers, for example, are replaceable and can be disposable or reusable. Accordingly, they may be consumables that are not supplied directly with the ventilation system and therefore are not included with the system.
[0084] Procedure:
[0085] The invention also relates to a method for operating a personal protection system with a ventilation system, wherein the personal protection system has at least two separable, separately ventilated rooms. The method comprises the following steps:
[0086] • Daily release of a fragrance from at least one of the dispensers at a defined start time at the beginning of a defined sleep period;
[0087] • Daily stopping of the release at a set stop time after the start time.
[0088] Special design type No. 16:
[0089] According to a particular embodiment of the process, the period limited by the start and stop times does not exceed one-third of a predetermined sleep time. The predetermined sleep time is, for example, in the range of 6 to 8 hours. Thus, the period for fragrance release (from start time to stop time) is, for example, a maximum of 2:00 h to 2:40 h. Particularly preferably, the period is no more than 1 hour.
[0090] The procedure is preferably carried out using a drug-free fragrance.
[0091] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0092] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys Further advantageous embodiments and combinations of features of the invention emerge from the following detailed description and the entirety of the patent claims.

[0103] Basically, identical parts in the figures are marked with the same reference symbols.
[0104] Ways to implement the invention
[0105] Fig. 1 schematically shows a simple personal protection facility 1. This is a concrete bunker located underground 4. The personal protection facility 1 has, for example, three rooms 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3. Room 2.3 is an anteroom with a door 3.3 to the outside. This door is, for example, a concrete door that closes airtight. The three rooms 2.1, ..., 2.3 can be separated from each other by the doors 3.1 and 3.2.
[0106] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0107] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys A ventilation system 5 according to the invention is installed in anteroom 2.3. It is connected to the outside of the personnel protection room 1 via the air intake duct 6. It is also connected to rooms 2.1 and 2.2 via distribution ducts 8.1 and 8.2. The air drawn in via the air intake duct is thus supplied to rooms 2.1 and 2.2.
[0108] Exhaust air ducts 16.1 and 16.2 carry the used air from rooms 2.1 and 2.2 to the outside. The ventilation system according to the invention is also indicated.
[0109] In Fig. 1, the special embodiments No. 12 and No. 13 are implemented.
[0110] Fig. 2 schematically shows the structure of a preferred ventilation system 5. The arrows in the channels indicate the direction of airflow.
[0111] According to special design no. 11, an explosion protection valve 7 is initially provided in the air intake duct 6. The air intake duct 6 then leads to the gas filter 11. After the gas filter 11, the air intake duct 6 leads to the air inlet 9.1 of the fan 9. The use of a gas filter is
[0112] The air outlet 9.2 of the fan 9 is connected to the supply air distribution system. In this example, the supply air distribution system comprises a supply air duct 8.3 and a 1:2 branch 8.8, with the supply air duct 8.3 carrying the air to the 1:2 branch. From the outlets of the 1:2 branch 8.8, the distribution ducts 8.1 and 8.2 carry the supply air to rooms 2.1 and 2.2. In this example, the distribution ducts 8.1 and 8.2 are also part of the supply air distribution system.
[0113] Each distribution channel 8.1, 8.2 has a dispenser 13.1, 13.2 connected. Each dispenser
[0114] 13.1, 13.2 is designed to dispense a fragrance from the associated fragrance container.
[0115] 12.1, 12.2 are sprayed into the distribution channel 8.1, 8.2. The two dispensers 13.1, 13.2 are controlled by a control unit 14. The control unit 14 gives a start signal to initiate the dispensing of the fragrance by dispenser 13.1 or 13.2. After a
[0116] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0117] On October 28, 2025, at the programmed time, the control unit 14 gives a stop signal to stop the dispensing of the fragrance by the dispenser 13.1 or 13.2.
[0118] Control unit 14, for example, has two memory locations, 15.1 and 15.2, in which the start and stop times for the assigned dispensers 13.1 and 13.2 are stored. In this example, control unit 14 also has a memory location, 15.3, for the sleep time (start and end of the sleep period).
[0119] Fig. 2 illustrates the special embodiments No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7, No. 10 and No. 11. In addition, Fig. 2 shows the second preferred variant of special embodiment No. 5.
[0120] Fig. 3 illustrates the control system and the method for operating the ventilation system. Dispensers 13.1 and 13.2 are both controlled on a 24-hour cycle. Fig. 3 shows that dispenser 13.1 releases the fragrance from fragrance container 12.1 into distribution channel 8.1 during the period T1 to T2 (e.g., T = 9 p.m. and T2 = 10 p.m.). T1 denotes the start time and T2 the stop time. The start time T1 and stop time T2 are stored, for example, in memory 15.1 of the control unit 14.
[0121] Independently of dispenser 13.1, dispenser 13.2 has a programmed period T3 to T4 during which it dispenses fragrance from fragrance container 12.2 into distribution channel 8.2. The start time T3 (e.g., T3 = 6:00 AM) and stop time T4 (e.g., T4 = 7:00 AM) are stored, for example, in memory 15.2 of control unit 14. The horizontal axis of the diagram covers a 24-hour cycle from 0:00 AM to 12:00 AM. This cycle is completed every day (i.e., the control unit operates on a 24-hour cycle).
[0122] Fig. 3 thus illustrates in particular the special embodiment No. 6.
[0123] Fig. 4 schematically shows the setup of a ventilation device that includes a dispenser 13.3 containing two fragrance containers 12.3 and 12.4. The dispenser 13.3 is connected to the distribution duct 8.4. The dispenser 13.3 is designed to selectively introduce the respective fragrance into the supply air from either one fragrance container 12.3 or the other fragrance container 12.4.
[0124] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0125] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys In Fig. 4, the supply air distribution system has a supply air duct 8.7, which is connected to the air outlet 9.2 of the fan 9. The supply air duct 8.7 carries the air to a 1:3 branch 8.9, which is also part of the supply air distribution system. Three distribution ducts 8.4, 8.5, 8.6 are connected to this 1:3 branch 8.9. These also belong to the supply air distribution system and carry the air to three different rooms (not shown). The three rooms are either separate from each other or can be separated.
[0126] According to special embodiment No. 8, in the present embodiment two distribution channels 8.5 and 8.7 (i.e., at least one distribution channel) are not connected to a dispenser. Therefore, they are not supplied with fragrances.
[0127] According to a particular embodiment of the invention, distribution channel 8.4 leads to a bedroom, the bedroom being the only room scented with fragrances according to a programmed 24-hour schedule. The time programs are stored in the two memory locations 15.1 and 15.2 of the control unit 14.
[0128] According to a preferred embodiment, the control unit 14 forms a unit together with the dispenser 13.3. In other words, the dispenser 13.3 can have an integrated control unit that allows the dispenser to be controlled on a 24-hour cycle.
[0129] Fig. 5 shows an embodiment in which two separate dispensers 13.1, 13.2 are connected to a distribution channel 8.1. The distribution channel 8.2 is free of fragrance and therefore does not require a dispenser. The two dispensers 13.1, 13.2 are controlled by the control unit 14. The fragrance containers 12.1, 12.2 contain different fragrances. One fragrance promotes falling asleep at bedtime. The other fragrance can promote waking up of the residents.
[0130] Fig. 6 shows a ventilation system in which the fragrances are introduced into the supply air duct before the 1:2 branch. In this embodiment, two dispensers 13.1, 13.2 are provided. They are connected to the supply air duct 8.3. Consequently, all distribution ducts 8.1, 8.2 of the supply air distribution system will distribute the same fragrance at a specific time.
[0131] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0132] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys Fig. 6 thus illustrates the first preferred variant of the special embodiment
[0133] No. 5.
[0134] Fig. 7 shows a personal protection system with seven separable, separately ventilated rooms. In front of the entrance door 19 (which is preferably a disaster-resistant concrete door) is a protected (especially covered) forecourt 18. A staircase is indicated in Fig. 7, leading from the surrounding ground level to the personal protection system located below ground level. The entrance door 19 leads to an anteroom (room 2.4). This is separated from a subsequent workroom (room 2.5) by a security door 20. From room 2.5, a door leads to an anteroom of a dormitory (room 2.9). From room 2.5, another door leads to a first multi-purpose room (room 2.7). From this first room 2.7, doors lead on one side to a second multi-purpose room (room 2.8) and on the other side to the anteroom of the dormitory (room 2.9). Finally, there is a kitchen (room 2.6), a machine room (room 2.10) and an (unventilated) tank room (room 2.11).
[0135] The geometric arrangement and connection of the rooms depend on the purpose of the personal protection system and the available space for the personal protection system. For the invention, it is only relevant that at least two separable and separately ventilated rooms 2.4, ..., 2.10 are present.
[0136] The engine room contains the fan, the air intake system upstream of the fan (preferably with gas filter), the 1:n branch (here a 1:4 branch) and an initial section of the pipes of the supply air distribution system.
[0137] According to a special design, the 1 :n branch is housed in the ventilation unit 5.1.
[0138] The four arms of the 1:4 branch are connected to the supply air distribution pipes 21.1 to 21.4. A first supply air distribution pipe 21.1 supplies fresh air to room 2.9. Another supply air distribution pipe 21.2 supplies fresh air to room 2.8. A third and a fourth supply air distribution pipe 21.3 and 21.4 supply fresh air to rooms 2.5 and 2.6, respectively.
[0139] 28925-WO1 - WR / krf Keller Schneider
[0140] October 28, 2025 Patent and Trademark Attorneys Furthermore, Figure 7 shows four separate exhaust air ducts: one exhaust air duct 16.3 for room 2.8, one exhaust air duct 16.4 for room 2.7, one exhaust air duct 16.5 for room 2.4, and one exhaust air duct 16.6 for room 2.5. According to special embodiment No. 9, a separate exhaust air duct is thus provided for each separately ventilated room, which carries the exhaust air to an exhaust air outlet 17 of the personal protection system.
[0141] An explosion protection valve can also be provided in the exhaust air outlet 17, just like in the supply air inlet. This protects both the supply and exhaust air against pressure wave shocks from the outside.
[0142] In summary, the invention offers a way to stabilize the circadian rhythm in personal protection systems without daylight exposure.
