Description

IMPROVED MATTRESS DESIGNTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The subject matter disclosed herein is generally directed to an innovative mattress design, methods for making same, and methods for retrofitting existing mattresses to arrive at the disclosure’s design, based on optimum use of the force of gravity, to achieve improved brain and other vital organ perfusion and better reconditioning of a user’ s whole body during the 20-40% of the user’ s life hours spent on a mattress.BACKGROUND

[0002] Mattresses have been used for centuries to provide a comfortable surface for lying down and sleeping. The world's oldest known mattress was discovered was discovered in South Africa. The mattress, which consists of layers of reeds and rushes, was discovered at the bottom of a pile of bedding made from compacted grasses and leafy plants. The bedding had accumulated at the Sibudu Cave site in KwaZulu- Natal over a period of 39,000 years, with the oldest mats dating to 77,000 years ago (https: / / nationalgeographic.com / adventure / article / 111208-oldest-mattress-africa-archaeology-science). On average, every adult person spends 20-40% of their life on a mattress. Mattresses are considered a resting and comfort commodity mostly to relax and fall asleep. However, at certain stages in life people have to spend more time due to health conditions and our design has the capability to accommodate additional requirements to customize it to the individual needs.

[0003] Various attempts to improve upon mattress designs exist. These include efforts such as U.S. Pat. Pub. 2013 / 0245395 - Pillow and Mattress for Reducing Snoring and Sleep Apnea, Bidarian, et al. This provides an improved pillow and mattress set to be used as a means for reducing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea during sleep by allowing a true prone position of the head. The pillow and mattress set further provides a support for lying with the body in a prone position. The pillow and mattress set comprises a pillow to support the head in a prone position and a mattress to support the body in a prone position, wherein the pillow and mattress are freely adjustable in relation to each other. (Abstract.) The current disclosure, meanwhile, provides an improved mattress with a unique design rather than a matched pillow / mattress construct.

[0004] U. S. Pat. No. 8,756,736 - Inclined air mattress having internal air baffles and supports, Minson et al. The ‘736 patent discloses an inflatable, wedge-shaped incline mattress that uses internal air baffles to present an inclined sleep surface of uniforms gradient to help relieve Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). (Abstract.) However, the current disclosure mattress is contra-indicated for GERD.

[0005] U.S. Pat. Pub. No. 2010 / 0122418 - Full-Body Inclined Mattress, Adler et al., provides a fullbody auxiliary mattress for reducing acid reflux in a person lying on a flat surface. The auxiliary mattress includes a head end, a foot end, a flat bottom and an inclined top to elevate the person's body. The auxiliary mattress top gradually inclines from the foot of the auxiliary mattress upward to the head of the auxiliary mattress. (Abstract.) The current disclosure does not quadrant or separate its mattress into discrete sections for various users.

[0006] U. S. Pat. Pub. No. 2006 / 0179580 - Inclined mattress pad, Robertson et al. This publication provides a full-length mattress pad for improved patient support for all parts of the user's body through provision of a support surface supplement for use with existing support surfaces, such as for use on top of a conventional mattress or hospital bed. The pad has a body of resilient material having a relatively flat, planar lower surface for being received on top of the existing support surface and has a length at least generally the same as that of the mattress, or at least long enough to support the full length of a user. An inclined upper surface is defined by the body of resilient material and has a plurality of different longitudinal sections. The plurality of different longitudinal sections collectively define a predetermined angle of inclination for the inclined upper surface which is relatively constant along the entire length of the body of resilient material relative to its planar lower surface. At least one of the plurality of different longitudinal sections has a relatively flat surface inclined at the predetermined angle of inclination, while at least one other of the plurality of different longitudinal sections has a surface formed with respective or different projections therein, so that improved patient support is provided through a combination of the inclined upper surface and the plurality of different longitudinal sections. Preferably, the predetermined angle of inclination is no more than about 10°. Characteristics of the plurality of longitudinal sections are selected based upon one or more of the type of resilient material used, the thickness of such material, the change in thickness of such material due to the predetermined angle of inclination, the material density, and the indention load deflection characteristics of such material, with such selection and combination of characteristics determined so as to optimize the inclined pad for support for the user's body which is engineered on the basis of the intended end use of said mattress pad. The longitudinal sections are also formed by one or both of longitudinal and lateral cuts within a selected portion of the inclined upper surface, also preselected to address the relieving of support pressure points to decrease the chance of decubitus ulcers in users of the mattress pad. At least one of the depths, widths, and lengths of such cuts, forming cross-sectional shapes of the different or respective projections, are preselected on the basis of the intended end use of said mattress pad. A plurality of channels may be formed between adjacent of the respective projections, for dissipating heat and moisture from a user who is supported on the inclinedupper surface, to increase the health and comfort of such user. (Abstract.) However, this device is not a mattress but instead a pad designed to require a mattress underneath.

[0007] U.S. Pat. No. 5,671,492 - Contoured Asymmetrical Mattress, Simon et al. discloses a mattress with an elevated chest support region and an arm well to reduce sleep disturbance in a person in the prone, sublime or side position. Said mattress is further provided with a firm zone at the foot of the mattress to assist persons transitioning onto and off of the mattress. An adjustable cover for said mattress is provided as is an improved method for packaging said mattress and cover. (Abstract.) However, the current disclosure does not employ a section / module concept as described in the reference.

[0008] U.S. Pat. No. 11,071,666 - Systems, Methods, and Devices for Treatment of Sleep Disorders. Emmons et al., provides for a sleep apparatus, such as a mattress, with a head support surface sized to support a person's head, and a torso support surface sized to support a person's torso. The head support surface is generally laterally sloped moving from a first side toward a second side of the mattress, and the torso support surface is generally laterally sloped moving from the first side toward the second side. In some embodiments, the lateral slope of the head support surface is at least about 15°, the lateral slope of the head support surface is greater than the lateral slope of the torso support surface, and / or the sleep apparatus slopes in the longitudinal direction as well. (Abstract.) However, this disclosure is unrelated to the current disclosure and its improvements.

[0009] Korean reference 20130004325U - Inclined Bed Mattress, discloses an improved mattress for the user to feel more comfortable when a person is in bed. The human body is an upright type, with its feet on the ground and its head toward the sky. The blood circulation in the body flows down from the heart. The present invention takes into account the structure of the human body when the upper part [a, b] of the mattress to which the head touches when the person is lying in bed is about 50 to 90 mm higher than the upper part [c, d] to which the human foot touches, The upper surface of the mattress [e] is inclined 2 to 3 degrees toward the lower upper [c, d]. Helps provide greater comfort and comfort than traditional horizontal flat mattresses. However, this construct has the feet lower than the head and is limited to being a comfort improvement.

[0010] Further, active circulation of blood and body fluids is a sine qua non of life is the most important and dynamic activity which is essential for a healthy life. The first 20-30 years of a person’s life, active circulation is maintained in various postures by musculo-skeletal, vascular, nervous and hormonal systems at the optimum level catering to the need of various tissues. However, with increasing age or health conditions, the efficiency of this system is gradually compromised (due to changes in hormonal levels, vascular elasticity, deposition of plaques, reduction in vascular elasticity, muscular tone, decreased physical activity, etc.) leading to inadequate circulation and supply of the required nutrients, trace elements, oxygen and nitrous oxide. This process keeps increasing with age. These pathophysiological changes are responsible for several problems linked with premature aging or associated with lifestyle, familial or genetic tendencies.

[0011] There is a universal consensus that adequate physical exercise is mandatory for fitness and wellness. The most important function of physical exercise is to improve circulation, which provides optimum nutrients, trace elements, growth factors and oxygen, etc., required for keeping the body in a healthy state.

[0012] What is needed in art is an improved mattress. Accordingly, it is an object of the present disclosure to provide an improved mattress that takes into consideration posture and gradients when lying down to provide improved sleep as well as improved health. The disclosed mattress design herein provides an innovative approach so that increased circulation to the vital organs is maintained while the person is lying in the bed or sleeping.

It is also to be understood that the terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting.

[0025] Unless specifically stated, terms and phrases used in this document, and variations thereof, unless otherwise expressly stated, should be construed as open ended as opposed to limiting. Likewise, a group of items linked with the conjunction “and” should not be read as requiring that each and every one of those items be present in the grouping, but rather should be read as “and / or” unless expressly stated otherwise. Similarly, a group of items linked with the conjunction “or” should not be read as requiring mutual exclusivity among that group, but rather should also be read as “and / or” unless expressly stated otherwise.

[0026] Furthermore, although items, elements or components of the disclosure may be described or claimed in the singular, the plural is contemplated to be within the scope thereof unless limitation to the singular is explicitly stated. The presence of broadening words and phrases such as “one or more,” “at least,” “but not limited to” or other like phrases in some instances shall not be read to mean that the narrower case is intended or required in instances where such broadening phrases may be absent.

[0027] Unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this disclosure belongs. Although anymethods and materials similar or equivalent to those described herein can also be used in the practice or testing of the present disclosure, the preferred methods and materials are now described.

[0028] All publications and patents cited in this specification are cited to disclose and describe the methods and / or materials in connection with which the publications are cited. All such publications and patents are herein incorporated by reference as if each individual publication or patent were specifically and individually indicated to be incorporated by reference. Such incorporation by reference is expressly limited to the methods and / or materials described in the cited publications and patents and does not extend to any lexicographical definitions from the cited publications and patents. Any lexicographical definition in the publications and patents cited that is not also expressly repeated in the instant application should not be treated as such and should not be read as defining any terms appearing in the accompanying claims. The citation of any publication is for its disclosure prior to the filing date and should not be construed as an admission that the present disclosure is not entitled to antedate such publication by virtue of prior disclosure. Further, the dates of publication provided could be different from the actual publication dates that may need to be independently confirmed.

[0029] As will be apparent to those of skill in the art upon reading this disclosure, each of the individual embodiments described and illustrated herein has discrete components and features which may be readily separated from or combined with the features of any of the other several embodiments without departing from the scope or spirit of the present disclosure. Any recited method can be carried out in the order of events recited or in any other order that is logically possible.

[0030] Where a range is expressed, a further embodiment includes from the one particular value and / or to the other particular value. The recitation of numerical ranges by endpoints includes all numbers and fractions subsumed within the respective ranges, as well as the recited endpoints. Where a range of values is provided, it is understood that each intervening value, to the tenth of the unit of the lower limit unless the context clearly dictates otherwise, between the upper and lower limit of that range and any other stated or intervening value in that stated range, is encompassed within the disclosure. The upper and lower limits of these smaller ranges may independently be included in the smaller ranges and are also encompassed within the disclosure, subject to any specifically excluded limit in the stated range. Where the stated range includes one or both of the limits, ranges excluding either or both of those included limits are also included in the disclosure. For example, where the stated range includes one or both of the limits, ranges excluding either or both of those included limits are also included in the disclosure, e.g., the phrase “x to y” includes the range from ‘x’ to ‘y’ as well as the range greater than ‘x’ and less than ‘y’. The range can also be expressed as an upper limit, e.g., ‘about x, y, z, or less’ and should be interpreted to include the specificranges of ‘about x’, ‘about y’, and ‘about z’ as well as the ranges of ‘less than x’, less than y’, and ‘less than z’. Likewise, the phrase ‘about x, y, z, or greater’ should be interpreted to include the specific ranges of ‘about x’, ‘about y’, and ‘about z’ as well as the ranges of ‘greater than x’, greater than y’, and ‘greater than z’. In addition, the phrase “about ‘x’ to ‘y’”, where ‘x’ and ‘y’ are numerical values, includes “about ‘x’ to about ‘y’”.

[0031] It should be noted that ratios, concentrations, amounts, and other numerical data can be expressed herein in a range format. It will be further understood that the endpoints of each of the ranges are significant both in relation to the other endpoint, and independently of the other endpoint. It is also understood that there are a number of values disclosed herein, and that each value is also herein disclosed as “about” that particular value in addition to the value itself. For example, if the value “10” is disclosed, then “about 10” is also disclosed. Ranges can be expressed herein as from “about” one particular value, and / or to “about” another particular value. Similarly, when values are expressed as approximations, by use of the antecedent “about,” it will be understood that the particular value forms a further aspect. For example, if the value “about 10” is disclosed, then “10” is also disclosed.

[0032] It is to be understood that such a range format is used for convenience and brevity, and thus, should be interpreted in a flexible manner to include not only the numerical values explicitly recited as the limits of the range, but also to include all the individual numerical values or sub-ranges encompassed within that range as if each numerical value and sub-range is explicitly recited. To illustrate, a numerical range of “about 0.1% to 5%” should be interpreted to include not only the explicitly recited values of about 0.1% to about 5%, but also include individual values (e.g., about 1%, about 2%, about 3%, and about 4%) and the sub-ranges (e.g., about 0.5% to about 1.1%; about 5% to about 2.4%; about 0.5% to about 3.2%, and about 0.5% to about 4.4%, and other possible sub-ranges) within the indicated range.

[0033] As used herein, the singular forms “a”, “an”, and “the” include both singular and plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.

[0034] As used herein, "about," "approximately," “substantially,” and the like, when used in connection with a measurable variable such as a parameter, an amount, a temporal duration, and the like, are meant to encompass variations of and from the specified value including those within experimental error (which can be determined by e.g., given data set, art accepted standard, and / or with e.g., a given confidence interval (e.g., 90%, 95%, or more confidence interval from the mean), such as variations of + / - 10% or less, + / -5% or less, + / -1% or less, and + / -0.1% or less of and from the specified value, insofar such variations are appropriate to perform in the disclosure. As used herein, the terms “about,” “approximate,” “at or about,” and “substantially” can mean that the amount or value in question can be the exact value ora value that provides equivalent results or effects as recited in the claims or taught herein. That is, it is understood that amounts, sizes, formulations, parameters, and other quantities and characteristics are not and need not be exact, but may be approximate and / or larger or smaller, as desired, reflecting tolerances, conversion factors, rounding off, measurement error and the like, and other factors known to those of skill in the art such that equivalent results or effects are obtained. In some circumstances, the value that provides equivalent results or effects cannot be reasonably determined. In general, an amount, size, formulation, parameter or other quantity or characteristic is “about,” “approximate,” or “at or about” whether or not expressly stated to be such. It is understood that where “about,” “approximate,” or “at or about” is used before a quantitative value, the parameter also includes the specific quantitative value itself, unless specifically stated otherwise.

[0035] The term “optional” or “optionally” means that the subsequent described event, circumstance or substituent may or may not occur, and that the description includes instances where the event or circumstance occurs and instances where it does not.

[0036] As used interchangeably herein, the terms “sufficient” and “effective,” can refer to an amount (e.g., mass, volume, dosage, concentration, and / or time period) needed to achieve one or more desired and / or stated result(s). For example, a therapeutically effective amount refers to an amount needed to achieve one or more therapeutic effects.

[0037] As used herein, “tangible medium of expression” refers to a medium that is physically tangible or accessible and is not a mere abstract thought or an unrecorded spoken word. “Tangible medium of expression” includes, but is not limited to, words on a cellulosic or plastic material, or data stored in a suitable computer readable memory form. The data can be stored on a unit device, such as a flash memory or CD-ROM or on a server that can be accessed by a user via, e.g., a web interface.

[0038] Various embodiments are described hereinafter. It should be noted that the specific embodiments are not intended as an exhaustive description or as a limitation to the broader aspects discussed herein. One aspect described in conjunction with a particular embodiment is not necessarily limited to that embodiment and can be practiced with any other embodiment(s). Reference throughout this specification to “one embodiment”, “an embodiment,” “an example embodiment,” means that a particular feature, structure or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. Thus, appearances of the phrases “in one embodiment,” “in an embodiment,” or “an example embodiment” in various places throughout this specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment but may. Furthermore, the particular features, structures or characteristics may be combined in any suitable manner, as would be apparent to a person skilled inthe art from this disclosure, in one or more embodiments. Furthermore, while some embodiments described herein include some, but not other features included in other embodiments, combinations of features of different embodiments are meant to be within the scope of the disclosure. For example, in the appended claims, any of the claimed embodiments can be used in any combination.

[0039] All patents, patent applications, published applications, and publications, databases, websites and other published materials cited herein are hereby incorporated by reference to the same extent as though each individual publication, published patent document, or patent application was specifically and individually indicated as being incorporated by reference.KITS

They are often found in traditional innerspring mattresses;• Euro Top: a mattress with an extra layer of padding sewn directly onto the mattress's surface, giving it a plush and uniform appearance;• Pillow Top: mattresses having an extra layer of padding stitched to the top, giving it a softer and more cushioned feel; and• Zoned Support: mattresses having different zones with varying levels of firmness to provide targeted support for different parts of the body, such as the lumbar region.

[0051] Further, the thickness of mattresses of the current disclosure can be used with mattresses of various thickness or height.

[0052] Benefits of the mattresses of the current design may include:

[0053] (A) improved perfusion of brain, head, neck, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, pancreas, GIT, kidneys chest and torso.

[0054] (B) improved perfusion of Eyes, internal and middle ears, pituitary gland, hypothalamus;

[0055] (C) improved perfusion of skin and muscles of Face, head and neck thereby delaying the signs of aging;

[0056] (D) providing better reclining of spine and lower limbs.

[0058] (F) improved drainage of respiratory secretions which accumulate near the bases of Lungs; and

[0059] (G) improved return of blood, lymph and extracellular fluid accumulated in the lower limbs due to dependent posture.

[0060] The current mattress design employs physics with mathematical calculations to provide an improved mattress.

[0061] FIG. 1 shows one embodiment of a mattress 100 of the current disclosure with angles calculated against the height of the header (right side) in FIG. 1. The mattress may be defined with first surface point A 102, second surface point B 104, third surface point C 106, and fourth surface point D 108.

[0062] Height AB 110 may comprise a constant length (Head end ) which may range from 10- 30 cm (which are common or standard sizes in practice, but it may be more or less) in one instance, such as 20 cm. Length BC 112 may comprise any constant length of 6.5 ft. (All the lengths from 4 to 10 feet or equivalent measurements included). Height DC 114 (That is the thickness of the mattress at the foot end) may be variable in each case changing from a value within the range of 10 cm - 120 cm changing with an increase of about 2.5 cm ( or 1” or any equivalent measurement unit). This can also be explained as change of thickness from head end towards the foot end by AAB (110 in FIG. 1 representing head end) + 1” (or any increase from 1” to 40” or equivalent measuring unit). The objective is to keep the head of the person lying on this bed at a lower level than the foot so that the body fluids including blood, plasma, lymph, intercellular fluid move preferentially assisted by the force of gravity towards abdomen, chest, neck and head.

[0063] Straight line 116 is drawn from the first surface point A 102 toward line DC 114 cutting DC at point E 118. Now the length of line CE 120 will be 20 cm and the length of line DE 122 will be the remaining length of the variation which is increasing 2.5 cm each time.

[0064] Triangle 124 formed AADE. The length of AE may be 198.12 cm (6.5 ft.), which may be the same as length BC 112. The length of line DE 122 may vary each time while the length of line AD 126 may be calculated each time with the variation in the length of line DE 122. 1. Triangle AED wedge may be placed underneath the existing mattress as a retrofitting attachment that is to be included in the patent. This includes methods for retrofitting an existing mattress to arrive at the innovative mattress design of the current disclosure to provide a mattress design based on optimum use of theforce of gravity to achieve improved brain and other vital organ perfusion and better reconditioning of a user’s whole body during the 20-40% of the user’s life hours spent on a mattress as described and shown herein.

[0065] For purposes of example only and not intended to be limiting,

[0066] AD2= (198.12)2+ (0)2

[0067] AD = 198.12 cm.

[0068] If DC = 20 cm then DE = 0 cm and AD will be 198.12 cm.

[0069] DC = 22.5 cm the DE = 2.5 cm then the AD is 198.14 cm.

[0070] DC = 25 cm the DE = 5 cm then the AD is 198.18 cm.

[0071] DC = 27.5 cm the DE = 7.5 cm then the AD is 198.26 cm.

[0072] DC = 30 cm the DE = 10 cm then the AD is 198.37 cm.

[0073] DC = 32.5 cm the DE = 12.5 cm then the AD is 198.51 cm.

[0074] DC = 35 cm the DE = 15 cm then the AD is 198.69 cm.

[0075] DC = 37.5 cm the DE = 17.5 cm then the AD is 198.89 cm.

[0076] DC = 40 cm the DE = 20 cm then the AD is 199.13 cm.

[0077] Angle X 128 formed between AD and DE (or DC):

[0078] x = 90° (angle between the line AD and DE)

[0079] AD = 198.12 the angle x = 90°

[0080] AD = 198.14 the angle x = 89.277°

[0081] AD = 198.18 the angle x = 88.554°

[0082] AD = 198.26 the angle x = 88.832°

[0083] AD = 198.37 the angle x = 87.110°

[0084] AD = 198.51 the angle x = 86.390°

[0085] AD = 198.69 the angle x = 85.670°

[0086] AD = 198.89 the angle x = 84.952°

[0087] AD = 199.13 the angle x = 84.236°

[0088] For the purposes of simplification, we have mentioned the thickness of the head portion 130 of a mattress of the current disclosure as possibly measuring from 10-30 cm at line AB 110 with thisheight increasing distally toward foot end 132 of bed 100 (Figure 1) and line DC 114. However, this same design can be adapted to mattress of all the thicknesses being produced for various uses. For example, the head end ranges from 10 to 30 cm and the corresponding foot end ranging from Head end thickness (e.g., 20 cm) + A2.5 cm to 90 cm foot end [or 8” at head and 8+2 to 36” respectively],

[0089] By adopting the innovative design of the current disclosure a variety of health problems can be prevented, averted and / or their impact decreased significantly. This can allow the general public to use a mattress of the current disclosure which are for general public use as a Safeguard (Prevention) against the above referred health hazards as well as for special medical conditions, health and wellness purposes mentioned above. Further, Triangle AED (see FIG. 1) wedge may be placed underneath the existing mattress as a retrofitting attachment that is to be included in the patent.

[0090] The inventor has conducted several studies to substantiate the claims including measurement of blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, Holter monitoring, perfusion, impact on snoring, Oxygen saturation, sleep studies, blood levels of various hormones, glucose, under various physical postures, anxiety etc., urine formation etc. Samples of the impact of variation in posture during sleep is attached as FIGS. 2-4, Table 1, see FIG. 5 and Table 2, see FIG. 6.****
