Description

OPERATIONAL CONDITION DETECTION MEANS FOR AN AEROSOL-GENERATING DEVICE AND ASSOCIATED METHOD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a driving assembly for an aerosol-generating device. In particular, the present disclosure relates to a driving assembly for an aerosol-generating device configured to inductively heat an aerosol-forming substrate. The present disclosure also relates to an aerosol-generating system. The present disclosure further relates to a method of detecting a condition associated with a heating operation of an aerosol-generating device or with the aerosol generating device.

[0002] Aerosol-generating systems that employ inductive heating to heat an aerosol-forming substrate in order to generate an aerosol for user inhalation are generally known in the prior art. These systems typically comprise an aerosol-generating device including an inductive heating assembly, and an aerosol-generating article including an aerosol-forming substrate that, when heated, is capable of releasing volatile compounds that cool to form an inhalable aerosol. The aerosol-generating article is configured to be coupled to the aerosol-generating device. The inductive heating assembly comprises at least one inductor coil, which is configured to generate an alternating magnetic field. A susceptor, either forming part of the aerosol-generating article or the device, is arranged in close proximity to the aerosol-forming substrate and within the alternating magnetic field. When the susceptor is penetrated by the alternating magnetic field, the susceptor is heated by at least one of Joule heating from induced eddy currents in the susceptor and hysteresis losses. The heated susceptor heats the aerosol-forming substrate causing volatile compounds to be released from the aerosol-forming substrate, which cool to form an inhalable aerosol.

[0003] During use, there are several operating conditions under which that properties of the inhalable aerosol, such as volume, composition or flavour, may become unsatisfactory. For example, if an amount of aerosol-generating substrate in the aerosol-generating article becomes depleted, the heating temperature is too high, the device is not configured to heat the specific aerosol-generating article inserted into the device, or an object other than an aerosol-generating article is inserted into the device.

[0004] It would therefore be desirable to determine whether one of these operating conditions has occurred and to do so without a substantial increase in the number or complexity of electrical components compared to some known prior art systems.

[0005] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a driving assembly for an aerosol-generating device, comprising: a driving circuit comprising a DC / AC inverter and a resonant circuit comprising an inductor connected to the DC / AC inverter for generation of an alternating magnetic field to cause a susceptor to heat an aerosol-forming substrate when the susceptor is penetrated by the magnetic field; and a controller configured to, during a heating operation cause generation of an aerosol for inhalation: monitor a first electrical parameter value associated with the resonant circuit and a second electrical parameter value associated with power provided to the DC / AC inverter; and determine whether a condition associated with operation of the aerosol-generating device has occurred, based on the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value.

[0006] By using both a first electrical parameter value measured at the inductor and a second electrical parameter value measured at the power supply to determine whether a condition associated with the operation of the device has occurred, the power control of the aerosol-generating device is improved.

[0007] The first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value may be power values.

[0008] The first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value may be voltage values. The first electrical parameter value may be a resonant voltage value. The second electrical parameter value may be a value of voltage drawn from the DC power supply.

[0009] Measuring voltage values provides the advantage of allowing for more stable and precise control and can be implemented simply at low cost.

[0010] Monitoring a first electrical parameter value associated with the resonant circuit and a second electrical parameter value associated with power provided to the DC / AC inverter may comprise: measuring the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value in response to a start of the heating operation, and storing the measured first electrical parameter value and the measured second electrical parameter value as a first reference value and a second reference value, respectively.

[0011] Monitoring a first electrical parameter value associated with the resonant circuit and a second electrical parameter value associated with power provided to the DC / AC inverter may further comprise measuring the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value at predetermined time intervals.

[0012] This provides the advantage of consistently monitoring the electrical parameter values so that trends over time may be more accurately observed.

[0013] The controller may be further configured to control whether power is provided to the driving circuit based on determining that the condition associated with operation of the aerosol-generating device has occurred.

[0014] The condition may include at least one of: an amount of aerosol-forming substrate is below a threshold amount, the aerosol forming substrate is not compatible with the aerosol-generating device, an object inserted into a cavity of the aerosol-generating device is not compatible with the aerosol-generating device, operating parameters of the susceptor exceed predetermined operational values.

[0015] Determining whether a condition associated with operation of the aerosol-generating device has occurred may be based on a ratio of the first electrical parameter value to the second electrical parameter value.

[0016] Normalising the first electrical parameter value using the second electrical parameter value reduces signal noise and therefore allows for a more accurate determination of whether a condition has occurred.

[0017] The controller may further compare the ratio to a threshold value and determine that the condition has occurred when the ratio is less than or equal to the threshold value. The threshold value may be based on the ratio of the first reference value to the second reference value.

[0018] This provides a simple mechanism to determine that a condition has occurred, thereby enabling efficient power control and without requiring large amounts of memory.

[0019] Monitoring a first electrical parameter value associated with the resonant circuit and a second electrical parameter value associated with power provided to the DC / AC inverter may comprise measuring the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value in response to a start of the heating operation. The threshold value may be based on the ratio of the first electrical parameter value to the second electrical parameter value measured in response to the start of heating operation.

[0020] The controller may further measure a rate of change of the ratio over a predetermined duration of time and determine the condition has occurred when a rate of change of the ratio is greater than a predefined threshold value.

[0021] This provides the advantage of being able to observe conditions which rapidly change heating conditions in the device, thereby improving power control and safety.

[0022] The controller may determine the condition has occurred based on comparing a ratio of the first reference value to the second reference value to a ratio of a subsequently-measured first electrical parameter value to a subsequently-measured second electrical parameter value.

[0023] The controller may compare the ratio over a predetermined period of time to a predetermined profile.

[0024] This provides the advantage of being able to detect abnormal operating conditions efficiently, thereby improving power control and safety.

[0025] In response to determining that the condition associated operation of the aerosol-generating device has occurred, the controller may stop the heating operation. Stopping the heating operation may comprise shutting down or limiting a supply of power to the driving circuit.

[0026] The DC / AC inverter may operate at a fixed frequency corresponding to a resonant frequency of the resonant circuit.

[0027] Operating the DC / AC inverter at a fixed frequency simplifies the heating circuitry and reduces device costs, such as manufacturing costs.

[0028] The controller may be further configured to control an amount of power provided to the driving circuit based on the second value of the electrical parameter.

[0029] The controller may be configured to control the DC / AC inverter to adjust the duty cycle based on the second value of the electrical parameter.

[0030] The aerosol-generating device may further comprise a memory.

[0031] The memory may be configured to store at least one table associating the second value of the electrical parameter to a duty cycle of a switching frequency of the DC / AC inverter for a given amount of power.

[0032] This provides the advantage of simple and efficient power control in the circuit.

[0033] The controller may be further configured to select the at least one table based on a power mode of the aerosol-generating device.

[0034] The power mode may be selected by a user.

[0035] The power mode may be selected automatically by the controller based on a detection of the aerosol-forming substrate.

[0036] The controller may be coupled to an activation switch circuit, wherein when the activation switch circuit is activated, the controller controls power to the driving circuit to begin the heating operation.

[0037] The activation switch circuit may include a button or a puff sensor.

[0038] The DC / AC inverter may comprise a resonant switching power amplifier comprising at least one transistor switch.

[0039] The resonant switching power amplifier may be a Class-D power amplifier. The use of a Class D amplifier provides a plurality of technical advantages in a small battery-operated device such as the aerosol-generating device, including low heat generation, compact size and high efficiency, leading to conservation of battery power.

[0040] According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for controlling an aerosol-generating device to heat an aerosol-forming substrate, the device comprising a DC / AC inverter and a resonant circuit comprising an inductor connected to the DC / AC inverter for generation of an alternating magnetic field, to cause a susceptor to heat an aerosol-forming substrate when the susceptor is penetrated by the magnetic field. The method comprises, during a heating operation cause generation of an aerosol for inhalation: monitoring a first electrical parameter value associated with the resonant circuit and a second electrical parameter associated with power provided to the DC / AC inverter; and determining whether a condition associated with operation of the device has occurred, based on the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value.

[0041] The first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value may be power values.

[0042] The first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value may be voltage values. The first electrical parameter value may be a resonant voltage value. The second electrical parameter value may be a value of voltage.

[0043] Monitoring a first electrical parameter value associated with the resonant circuit and a second electrical parameter value associated with power provided to the DC / AC inverter may comprise: measuring the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value in response to a start of the heating operation, and storing the measured first electrical parameter value and the measured second electrical parameter value as a first reference value and a second reference value , respectively.

[0044] Monitoring a first electrical parameter value at the inductor and a second electrical parameter value at the power supply further may comprise measuring the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value at predetermined time intervals.

[0045] The controller may be further configured to control whether power is provided to the DC / AC inverter based on the determining that the condition associated with operation of the device has occurred.

[0046] The condition may include at least one of: an amount of aerosol-forming substrate is below a threshold amount, the aerosol forming substrate is not compatible with the aerosol-generating device, an object inserted into a cavity of the aerosol-generating device is not compatible with the aerosol-generating device, operating parameters of the susceptor exceed predetermined operational values.

[0047] Determining whether a condition associated with operation of the device has occurred may be based on a ratio of the first electrical parameter value to the second electrical parameter value.

[0048] The method may further comprise comparing the ratio to a threshold value and determining the system condition when the ratio is less than or equal to the threshold value. The threshold value may be calculated based on a ratio of the first reference value to the second reference value.

[0049] The method may further comprise, determining a rate of change of the ratio over a predetermined duration of time and determining the condition when a rate of change of the ratio is greater than a predefined threshold value.

[0050] The method may further comprise determining the condition based on comparing a ratio of the first reference value to the second reference value to a ratio of a subsequently-measured first electrical parameter value to a subsequently-measured second electrical parameter value.

[0051] The method may further comprise comparing the ratio over a predetermined period of time to a predetermined profile.

[0052] The method may further comprise in response to determining that the condition has occurred, stopping the heating operation. Stopping the heating operation may comprise shutting down or limiting a supply of power to the DC / AC inverter.

[0053] The method may further comprise controlling the DC / AC inverter to operate at a fixed frequency corresponding to a resonant frequency of the inductor.

[0054] The method may further comprise controlling an amount of power provided to the DC / AC inverter based on the second value of the electrical parameter.

[0055] The method may further comprise controlling the DC / AC inverter to adjust the duty cycle based on the second value of the electrical parameter.

[0056] The duty cycle may be adjusted based on a power mode of the aerosol-generating device.

[0057] The method may further comprise receiving a selection of the power mode from a user.

[0059] The aerosol-generating device may further comprise a memory, wherein the memory is configured to store at least one table associating the second value of the electrical parameter to a duty cycle of a switching frequency of the DC / AC inverter for a given amount of power.

[0060] The method may further comprise selecting the at least one table based on a power mode of the aerosol-generating device.

[0061] The method may further comprise controlling power to the heating circuit to begin the heating operation in response to detecting activation of an activation switch circuit. The activation switch circuit may include a button or a puff sensor.

[0069] measuring an electrical parameter of the inductor over a range of switching frequencies of the switching circuit;

[0070] determining, based on the measured electrical parameter, a switching frequency corresponding to a resonant state of the inductor,

[0071] wherein, the determined switching frequency is used as the operating switching frequency at which the switching circuit operates during inductive heating an aerosol-forming substrate.

[0073] The electrical parameter may be a voltage. Measuring voltage values provides the advantage of allowing for more stable and precise control and can be implemented simply at low cost.

[0082] The power mode may be selected by a user.

[0083] The power mode may be selected automatically by the controller based on a detection of the aerosol-forming substrate.

[0084] According to a sixth aspect, there is provided a calibration apparatus for calibrating a driving assembly of an aerosol-generating device as described above. The calibration apparatus comprises: a reference susceptor inductively couplable to the inductor of the resonant circuit. The calibration apparatus may further comprise a calibration controller operatively coupleable to the controller of the driving assembly.

[0189] Figure 10 is a flow diagram illustrating a method for detection whether a condition associated with the heating operation or with the device has occurred.

[0190] Figure 11 shows a graph illustrating the relationship between normalised voltage drawn from the power supply and temperature of the susceptor.

[0191] Figure 1 shows a schematic illustration of an aerosol-generating system according to an example of the present disclosure. The aerosol-generating system comprises an aerosol-generating article 10 and an aerosol-generating device 60. The aerosol-generating article 10 may be a cartridge. The aerosol-generating article 10 may be received by the aerosol generating device 60. Figure 2 shows a schematic illustration of the aerosol-generating system of Figure 1 in which the aerosol-generating article 10 is received by the aerosol-generating device 60. The aerosol-generating system is portable and has a size comparable to a conventional cigar or cigarette.

[0192] The aerosol-generating article 10 has a mouth end and a connection end. The connection end is disposed opposite the mouth end. An outer housing 36 defines a mouth end air outlet 38 at the mouth end of the aerosol-generating article 10. The aerosol-generating article 10 may further comprise a mouthpiece at the mouth end. The connection end is configured for connection of the aerosol-generating article 10 to the aerosol-generating device 60, as described in more detail below.

[0193] The outer housing 36 is formed from a mouldable plastics material, such as polypropylene. The external width of the outer housing 36 is greater at the mouth end of the aerosol-generating article 10 than at the connection end. This forms a shoulder 37 between the mouth end and the connection end. This enables the connection end of the aerosol-generating article 10 to be received in a cavity 64 of the aerosol-generating device 60, with the shoulder 37 locating the aerosol-generating article 10 in the correct position in the aerosol-generating device 60. This also enables the mouth end of the aerosol-generating article 10 to remain outside of the aerosol-generating device 60, with the mouth end conforming to the external shape of the aerosol-generating device 60.

[0194] The aerosol-generating article 10 further comprises a liquid reservoir 44. The liquid reservoir 44 is for storing a liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42. The liquid reservoir 44 extends from the mouth end of the outer housing 36 to the connection end of the outer housing 36, and comprises an annular space defined by the outer housing 36. The annular space has an internal passage 48 that extends between the mouth end air outlet 38, and the open end of an internal passage 26 of a susceptor holder 14.

[0195] The liquid reservoir 44 further comprises two channels 45. The two channels 45 are defined between an inner surface of the outer housing 36 and an outer surface of the susceptor holder 14.The two channels 45 extend from the annular space defined by the outer housing 36 at the mouth end of the aerosol-generating article 10 to the connection end of the aerosol-generating article 10. The two channels 45 extend on opposite sides of the internal passage 26 of the susceptor holder 14. The susceptor holder 14 comprises a base 30 that partially closes one end of the internal passage 26. The base 30 comprises air inlets 32 that enable air to be drawn into the internal passage 26 through the partially closed end.

[0196] An air passage is formed through the aerosol-generating article 10 by the internal passage 26 of the susceptor holder 14, and the internal passage 48 of the liquid reservoir 44. The air passage extends from the air inlets 32 in the base 30 of the susceptor holder 14, through the internal passage 26 of the susceptor holder 14, and through the internal passage 48 of the liquid reservoir 44 to the mouth end air outlet 38. The air passage enables air to be drawn through the aerosol-generating article 10 from the connection end to the mouth end.

[0197] The aerosol-generating article 10 comprises a susceptor assembly 12 mounted in a susceptor holder 14. The susceptor assembly 12 and the susceptor holder 14 are located towards the connection end of the aerosol-generating article 10. The susceptor assembly 12 is planar, and thin, having a thickness dimension that is substantially smaller than a length dimension and a width dimension. The susceptor assembly 12 is shaped in the form of a rectangle.

[0198] The susceptor assembly 12 comprises a susceptor 16 that is arranged within the aerosol-generating article 10 such that, when the aerosol-generating article 10 is inserted into the cavity 64 of the aerosol-generating device 60, the susceptor 16 is located adjacent to the inductor 90 so that the susceptor 16 is penetrated by the alternating magnetic field generated by the inductor 90 during heating operation of the aerosol-generating device 60. The susceptor 16 may be a flat, rectangular sheet-like mesh made of an inductively heatable ferromagnetic stainless steel. Because the material of the susceptor 16 is both electrically conductive and magnetic, the alternating magnetic field of the inductor 90 induces both heat-generating eddy currents and hysteresis losses in the susceptor material. The heated susceptor 16 heats the aerosol-forming substrate 42 to a sufficient temperature to form an aerosol. The aerosol is drawn downstream through the aerosol-generating article 10 and inhaled by the user.

[0199] The susceptor assembly 12 also comprises a wicking element 20 for transporting the liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 from the liquid reservoir 44 to the susceptor 16. The wicking element 20 is a rectangular, porous body of cotton filaments. The width of the susceptor 16 is smaller than the width of the wicking element 20 so that the wicking element 20 comprises outer, exposed portions that protrude through openings in the side wall of the susceptor holder 14 into the two channels 45. The wicking element 20 is configured to supply liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 from the outer, exposed portions to the susceptor 16.

[0200] The wicking element 20 contacts the susceptor holder 14, such that the susceptor holder 14 supports the susceptor assembly 12 in position in the aerosol-generating article 10.

[0201] The susceptor assembly 12 is partially arranged inside the internal passage 26 of the tubular susceptor holder 14, and extends in a plane parallel to a central longitudinal axis of the susceptor holder 14. The susceptor 16 is arranged entirely within the internal passage 26 of the susceptor holder 14.

[0202] The aerosol-generating device 60 comprises a generally cylindrical housing 62 having a connection end and a distal end opposite the connection end. A cavity 64 for receiving the connection end of the aerosol-generating article 10 is located at the connection end of the device 60. An air inlet 65 is provided through the outer housing 62 at the base of the cavity 64 to enable ambient air to be drawn into the cavity 64 at the base.

[0203] The aerosol-generating device 60 comprises a driving assembly and a power supply 72 arranged within the device outer housing 62. The driving assembly includes a driving circuit and a controller 70. The power supply 72 is a DC power supply and may comprise a rechargeable battery such as a nickel cadmium battery, that is rechargeable via an electrical connector (not shown) at the distal end of the device 60. The power supply 72 may be assembled as a component of the device 60 or may be removable from the device 60. The controller 70 may further comprise a memory (not shown) for storing instructions for operating the device as well as operational parameters.

[0204] The driving circuit comprises a switching circuit and an inductor 90. The inductor 90 is positioned around the susceptor assembly 12 when the aerosol-generating article 10 is received in the cavity 64, as shown in Figure 2. The inductor 90 has a size and a shape matching the size and shape of heating regions of the susceptor elements. The inductor 90 may be made with a copper wire having a round circular section, and may be arranged on a coil former element (not shown) . The inductor 90 is a helical coil, and has a circular cross section when viewed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aerosol-generating device 60.

[0205] The controller 70 is connected to the power supply 72 and to the driving circuit, such that the controller 70 controls the supply of electricity to the inductive heating circuit such that the controller 70 is configured to supply an alternating current to the inductor. The inductor 90 is configured such that when the alternating current is supplied to the inductor, the inductor coil generates an alternating magnetic field in the region of the susceptor assembly 12 when the aerosol-generating article 10 is received in the cavity 64.

[0206] The driving assembly further includes a flux concentrator element 91. The flux concentrator element 91 has a greater radius than the inductor coil 90, and so partially surrounds the inductor coil 90. The flux concentrator element 91 is configured to reduce the stray power losses from the generated magnetic field.

[0207] Figure 2 shows the aerosol-generating system of Figure 1, wherein the aerosol-generating article 10 is received within the aerosol-generating device 60. In operation, when a user puffs on the mouth end air outlet 38 of the aerosol-generating article 10, ambient air is drawn into the base of the cavity 64 through system air inlet 65, and into the aerosol-generating article 10 through the air inlets 32 in the base 30 of the aerosol-generating article 10. The ambient air flows through the aerosol-generating article 10 from the base 30 to the mouth end air outlet 38, through the air passage, and over the susceptor assembly 12 and in particular over and across the susceptor 16.

[0208] The controller 70 controls the supply of electricity from the power supply 72 to the inductor 90 when the system is activated. The controller 70 may be operatively coupled to an airflow sensor 63. The airflow sensor 63 is in fluid communication with the passage of ambient air which is drawn through the system by the user. The controller 70 supplies electricity to the inductor 90 when user puffs on the aerosol-generating article 10 are detected by the airflow sensor 63. Additionally or alternatively, the controller 70 may be operatively connected to an activation switch that includes an actuator such as a button that receives a user input in order to activate the system.

[0209] When the system is activated, an alternating current is established in the inductor 90, which generates an alternating magnetic field in the cavity 64 that penetrates the susceptor assembly 12, causing the susceptor to heat. Liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 in the two channels 45 is drawn into the susceptor assembly 12 through the wicking element to the susceptor. The liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 at the susceptor is heated, and volatile compounds from the heated liquid aerosol-forming substrate are released into the air passage of the aerosol-generating article 10, which cool to form an aerosol. The aerosol is entrained in the air being drawn through the air passage of the aerosol-generating article 10, and is drawn out of the aerosol-generating article 10 at the mouth end air outlet 38 for inhalation by the user.

[0210] It is to be understood that while Figures 1A and 1 B illustrate the aerosol-generating device 60 and aerosol-generating article 10 as separate components, they may alternatively be integrated into a single device such that the aerosol-generating article 10 is a component of the aerosol-generating device. Here, the aerosol-generating device may be configured so that the aerosol-forming substrate 42 can be refilled once it is depleted.

[0211] Figure 3 shows a block diagram of electronic components of the aerosol-generating system. The aerosol-generating device 60 comprises the DC power supply 72 (for example, a battery) , the controller (for example, a microcontroller) 70, a switching circuit such as a DC / AC inverter 202, a matching network 203 for adaptation to the load, the inductor 90, and an AC / DC converter 204. The aerosol-generating article 10 comprises the susceptor 16. The DC / AC inverter 202, the matching network 203, the inductor 90 and the AC / DC converter 204 are all part of the driving circuit. The DC / AC inverter 202 may be a resonant switching power amplifier comprising at least one transistor switch, for example a Class D power amplifier.

[0212] Electrical parameters associated with the driving circuit are provided by feedback channels to the controller 70. Specifically, at least one electrical parameter 201 associated with power provided to the DC / AC inverter 202 is fed back to the controller and at least one electrical parameter 205 associated with the resonant circuit is fed back to the controller. The electrical parameter 205 associated with the resonant circuit will be an AC electrical parameter and is therefore fed back to the controller via the AC / DC converter 204. In an example, , the DC supply voltage VBAT and the voltage at the inductor 90 VCOIL may be provided by the feedback channels to the controller 70. The voltage VCOIL may be measured at the inductor 90 as an AC voltage, which is converted to a DC voltage by the AC / DC converter 204 for feedback to the controller 70.

[0213] A voltage boost circuit (not shown) may be provided between the power supply 72 and the DC / AC inverter 202 to boost the battery voltage in order to reduce power losses. For example, the battery voltage may be boosted from 3 to 4 Volts to 10 to 12 Volts.

[0214] It will be appreciated that the matching network 203 may be provided for optimum adaptation to the load, but the matching network 203 is not essential. The matching network 203 may improve power transfer efficiency between the DC / AC converter 202 and the inductor 90.

[0215] Figures 4 and 5 show components of the driving circuit. As can be seen from Figure 4, the DC / AC inverter 202 comprises a Class-D power amplifier 310 having a half-bridge topology comprising two transistor switches, arranged in a high-side and low-side configuration, where the transistor switched alternately convert DC current from the DC power supply 72 into high-frequency AC current. The transistor switches each comprise a Field Effect Transistor (FET) 320, for example a Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) . The DC / AC inverter 202 further comprises a transistor switch supply circuit 330 for supplying a switching signal (gate-source voltage) to the FETs 320.

[0216] The resonant circuit is LC load network 340 that comprises a shunt capacitor C1 and a series connection of a capacitor C2 and inductor L2 which corresponds to inductor 90. In addition, the DC power supply 72 comprising a choke L1 is shown for supplying a DC power to the inductive heating circuit.

[0217] As shown in Figure 5, the ohmic resistance R represents the total ohmic load, which is the sum of the ohmic resistance Rcoil of the inductor L2 and the ohmic resistance RLOAD of the susceptor. The total ohmic load is the apparent ohmic resistance R of the inductor L2. The ohmic resistance RCOIL of the inductor L2 does not vary greatly during operation of the aerosol-generating system. Thus, a change in the total ohmic load (or apparent ohmic resistance) can be attributed to the change in ohmic resistance RLOAD of the susceptor. The DC / AC inverter 310 may operate during heating operation at any suitable switching frequency. Suitable switching frequencies (and therefore frequencies for the alternating current) may be between 100 kilohertz (kHz) and 30 megahertz (MHz) . Where the inductor is a helical inductor coil, or a tubular inductor coil, the switching frequency may be between 500 kilohertz (kHz) and 30 megahertz (MHz) . Where the inductor is a flat inductor coil, the switching frequency may be between 100 kilohertz (kHz) , and 1 megahertz (MHz) . Driving an alternating current through the inductor 90 causes the inductor 90 to generate an alternating magnetic field. The alternating magnetic field may have any suitable frequency for heating a heating portion of a susceptor element located in the alternating magnetic field. Suitable frequencies for the alternating magnetic field may be between 100 kilohertz (kHz) and 30 megahertz (MHz) . The switching frequency of the DC / AC inverter 202 during heating operation corresponds to the resonant frequency of the resonant circuit and is determined during calibration of the aerosol-generating device 60 at manufacture.

[0218] Figure 6 is a flow diagram illustrating a method 400 for calibrating the inductive heating circuit during manufacture of the aerosol-generating device 60. The method 400 is performed using a reference susceptor of a calibration apparatus, in cases where the actual susceptor used for heating the aerosol-forming substrate during operation by a user is part of an aerosol-generating article 10. In cases where the actual susceptor used for heating the aerosol-forming substrate during operation by a user is part of an aerosol-generating device 60, it is to be understood that the actual susceptor instead of a reference susceptor is used for calibration.

[0219] At step 410, a reference susceptor is inductively coupled to the inductor 90. Specifically, a controller operates the driving circuit to generate an alternating magnetic field to cause the reference susceptor to heat when the reference susceptor is penetrated by the alternating magnetic field. The controller which may be the controller 70 of the aerosol-generating device 60 which is operatively coupled to a voltage sensor and additionally or alternatively a current sensor of the inductive heating circuit. Alternatively, instead of using the internal controller 70, the calibration apparatus may comprise a calibration controller itself. The calibration controller may be operatively coupled to a voltage sensor and / or current sensor of the calibration apparatus and operatively couplable to the transistor switch driver circuit of the heating arrangement in a feedback-loop configuration. Preferably, the reference susceptor is of the same type and placed at the same position in the receiving cavity 64 as the susceptor 16 within the aerosol-generating article 10 that is to be used with the device later on to heat the aerosol-forming substrate.

[0220] At step 420, an electrical parameter associated with the resonant circuit is measured over a range of switching frequencies of the DC / AC inverter 202. The electrical parameter associated with the resonant circuit may be a voltage of the inductor 90, VCOIL. However, the electrical parameter associated with the resonant circuit may additionally or alternatively be a current value.

[0221] At step 430, an operating switching frequency of the switching circuit 201 for which in operation the electrical parameter is in a predetermined range is determined. The predetermined range corresponds to a resonant state of the resonant circuit. The controller controls the switching frequency of the switching circuit 201 until the determined electrical parameter is in the predetermined range. The switching frequency may be tuned from low to high. The electrical parameter may be determined continuously while tuning the switching frequency. It is also possible that the switching frequency is tuned step-wise, in particular through a plurality of frequency values, wherein for each tuning step, in particular for each frequency value, the respective electrical parameter is determined. The step of tuning the switching frequency to a new frequency value and the step of determining the respective electrical parameter may alternate.

[0222] At step 440, the determined switching frequency is stored in the memory of the controller 70 of the aerosol-generating device as the operating switching frequency at which the switching circuit operates during inductive heating of the aerosol-forming substrate. In other words, the operating switching frequency of the device is not changed during heating operation of heating the aerosol-forming substrate for generation of an aerosol to be inhaled by a user and remains fixed during the lifetime of the device.

[0223] Calibrating the aerosol-generating device at manufacture and operating the device at the switching frequency determined during manufacture allows the device to heat efficiently, while also allowing for cost savings regarding the components required to operate the aerosol-generating device.

[0224] During heating operation of the aerosol-generating device 60 for heating an aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol for inhalation by a user, the controller 70 controls the DC / AC inverter 202 to operate at the switching frequency determined during the calibration process at manufacture and stored in the memory of the controller 70. During heating operation, the controller 70 monitors an electrical parameter associated with power provided to the driving circuit. The electrical parameter may be the voltage drawn from the DC power supply 72. The electrical parameter may additionally or alternatively comprise current drawn from the DC power supply 72.

[0225] Based on the monitored electrical parameter of the DC power supply 72, the controller 70 is configured to control an amount of power provided to the driving circuit to heat the susceptor 16 by adjusting a duty cycle of the DC / AC inverter 202. The controller 70 may use a table comprising values of the electrical parameter and the corresponding duty cycles of the DC / AC inverter 202 that is stored in the memory of the controller 70 in order to maintain the output power. The controller 70 may select the table from a plurality of tables stored in the memory. Each table corresponds to a respective output power. The aerosol-generating device 60 may be configured such that the user selects a power mode for heating operation of the aerosol-generating device from a plurality of power modes, where each power mode corresponds to a respective output power. Alternatively, the aerosol-generating device 60 may be configured such that the controller 70 selects a power mode for heating operation of the aerosol-generating device from a plurality of power modes based the aerosol-forming substrate or aerosol-generating article, where each power mode corresponds to a respective output power.

[0226] During operation of the aerosol-generating device 60 for heating an aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol for inhalation by a user, the controller 70 is additionally configured to detect whether a condition associated with operation of the device 60 has occurred. The condition may be associated with the heating operation or the aerosol-generating device itself The condition may be a fault condition.

[0227] The condition may be that the susceptor 16 is supplied with, or is not supplied with, liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42. This is illustrated by Figures 7, 8 and 9, which show an illustration of scenarios in which the supply of liquid aerosol forming substrate 42 from the liquid reservoir 44 to susceptor may be insufficient to produce a satisfactory aerosol.

[0228] Figure 7 shows a schematic illustration of a cross-section of the aerosol-generating article 10 of Figure 1 in which the liquid reservoir 44 is empty. In this scenario, there is no liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 in contact with the wicking element 20. Therefore, no liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 is supplied to the susceptor 16.

[0229] Figure 8 shows a schematic illustration of a cross-section of the aerosol-generating article 10 of Figure 1 in which the liquid reservoir 44 is nearly empty. In this scenario only part of the wicking element 20 are in contact with the remaining liquid aerosol forming substrate 42. This may lead to an insufficient supply of liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 to the susceptor 16.

[0230] Figure 9 shows a schematic illustration of a cross-section of the aerosol-generating article 10 of Figure 1 in which there is no liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 in contact with the wicking element 20 due to how the aerosol-generating article 10 is orientated. This may happen when the liquid reservoir 44 has been partially depleted and a user holds the aerosol generating system in certain orientations, for example upside down. In this scenario, there is no liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 supplied to the susceptor 16. However, the interruption of the supply of liquid aerosol forming substrate 42 to the susceptor 16 may only be temporary. This is because after a short period of time a user may reorientate the aerosol-generating system such that liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 is in contact with the wicking element 20.

[0231] It will be appreciated that there are other scenarios in which the supply of liquid aerosol forming substrate 42 to the susceptor 16 may be temporarily interrupted or be otherwise insufficient. For example, when a user puffs too hard on the mouth end air outlet 38, the liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 may be aerosolized at a rate greater than a rate at which the liquid aerosol-forming substrate 42 is supplied to the susceptor 16.

[0232] When the supply of liquid aerosol forming substrate 42 from the liquid reservoir 44 to susceptor 16 is insufficient to produce a satisfactory aerosol, the apparent resistance R of the LC circuit will decrease, where the decrease of resistance corresponds to an increase in resonant voltage VCOIL or an increase in current. Therefore, insufficient aerosol-forming substrate can be detected as a change of electrical parameter associated with the resonant circuit.

[0233] Each of the material, size, weight and shape of the susceptor 16 will affect the apparent resistance of the resonant LC circuit. Therefore if the initial ratio of the electrical parameters measured at the beginning of heating is out of limits or the heating profile (rate of change of the electrical parameters during heating) does not match predetermined or expected values, the controller may detect other conditions. For example, the aerosol-forming substrate 42 or the aerosol-generating article is not compatible with the aerosol-generating device 60; an object inserted into the cavity 48 of the aerosol-generating device 60 that is not compatible with the aerosol-generating device, such as a foreign object that is not an aerosol-generating article; and operating parameters of the susceptor 16 exceed predetermined operational parameter values, where the operational parameters may include susceptor temperature. The ratio of the electrical parameters may also be used to detect a type of aerosol-forming substrate, such as whether the substrate is a liquid or solid, the type of liquid and the type of solid. Each of these conditions will affect the load of the heating circuit and be observed via the electrical parameter associated with the resonant circuit, such as the resonant voltage VCOIL.

[0234] Figure 10 is a flow diagram illustrating a method for determining whether a condition associated with the heating operation or with the aerosol-generating device has occurred.

[0235] At step 810, the controller 70 controls the driving circuit to inductively heat a susceptor, thereby heating an aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol.

[0236] At step 820 the controller 70 monitors a first electrical parameter value associated with the resonant circuit and a second electrical parameter value associated with a power provided to the DC / AC 202 inverter by the DC power supply 72. For example, a voltage sensor or current sensor at the inductor 90 or at the capacitor monitors the resonant voltage or current and sends a voltage or current signal to the AC / DC converter 204. The AC / DC converter 204 then outputs a DC voltage or current value to the controller 70. In addition, a voltage sensor or a current sensor at the input-side of the DC / AC inverter 202 outputs the voltage or current drawn by the driving circuit from the power supply 72 to the controller 70. The electrical parameter values are first measured at the start of heating and then at regular predetermined time intervals until heating stops. The predetermined time intervals may be between 15 ms and 25 ms, preferably 20 ms. The first and second electrical parameter values measured at the start of heating are stored as a first reference value and a second reference value, respectively.

[0237] It is noted that the state of charge of the power supply 72 (the battery) affects the measured voltage drawn from the power supply. At least one table comprising values of state of charge and voltage is stored in the memory and used by the controller in the measurement of the second electrical parameter value. The memory may include one table for a battery under charging and a second table for a battery not under charging, where the mapping of values is different for the first and second table. By having first and second tables, the accuracy of any actions described herein that rely on measured voltage is improved, such as detection of a condition associated with operation of the device and controlling the power provided to the driving circuit.

[0238] At step 830, the controller 70 determines whether one or more conditions described above has occurred. The determination is based on the first electrical parameter value and the second electrical parameter value. Preferably, the controller determines a ratio of the first electrical parameter value to the second electrical parameter value and uses the ratio to perform the determination.

[0239] The one or more conditions may be determined by comparing the ratio to a threshold value. The threshold value may be determined during operation based on the ratio of the first and second electrical parameter values measured at the start of heating. Alternatively, the threshold value may be a predetermined threshold value stored in the memory of the controller 70. For example, during heating of the aerosol-forming substrate 42, as the temperature of the susceptor 16 increases, the effective resistance increases meaning that the measured ratio VCOIL / VBAT decreases. This is illustrated by Figure 11, a graph of the relationship between the ratio of voltage measured at the inductor to the voltage measured at the power supply (VCOIL / VBAT) and the temperature of the susceptor. As can be seen in Figure 9, there are three lines, each corresponding to a different aerosol-generating article or power mode of an aerosol-generating device. As described above, the controller 70 measures the first and second electrical parameters at the start of heating and determines the ratio as discussed above (points A1, B1 and C1 on the graph) . Points A2, B2 and C2 on the graph correspond to predefined susceptor temperatures. The predefined threshold value may therefore be a ratio corresponding to a predefined temperature at which the aerosol-generating device should stop heating operation. This prevents overheating of the aerosol-forming substrate.

[0240] The one or more conditions may be determined based on a rate of change of the ratio over a predetermined amount of time. For example, if the liquid aerosol-forming substrate 43 is not enough, the susceptor temperature can increase quickly and the trend of Figure 11 would no longer be seen. The controller 70 may therefore determine that a condition has occurred by determining a rate of change of the ratio over a predetermined duration of time, comparing a ratio of the first reference value to the second reference value to a ratio of a subsequently-measured first electrical parameter value to a subsequently-measured second electrical parameter value, and comparing the ratio over a predetermined period of time to a predetermined profile. Similarly, if the aerosol-generating substrate or aerosol-generating article is not compatible with the device, or if an object that is not an aerosol-generating article is inserted into the device, the rate of change of the ratio over a predetermined amount of time will not correspond to the expected profile.

[0241] It is to be understood that the controller may be configured to detect more than one condition, where the parameters for determining the conditions may be stored in the memory of the controller for one or more types of aerosol-generating article 10.

[0242] At step 840, the controller performs an action in response to the determination at step 830. Specifically, if the system condition is not met by the ratio the method returns to step 820 and the controller continues to monitor the electrical parameters. If the system condition is met, the controller controls the device to stop the heating operation.

[0243] Although the operation of the aerosol-generating device 60 has been described herein with respect to heating a liquid aerosol-forming substrate, it is contemplated that the operations may also be applied to the inductive heating of an aerosol-generating article comprising a solid aerosol-forming substrate and a susceptor. In such an application, the principles and methods described would similarly apply.
