[0003] The present application relates to a packaging unit comprising an absorbent hygienic article.

[0004] Disposable hygienic articles, such as sanitary napkins and panty liners, can be individually packaged in a wrapper of thin plastic film material. Individual packages enable hygienic carrying of the disposable hygienic articles for example in a bag or pocket. The packaging may be used both as a means for protecting an unused article against contamination and as a means for disposal of a used article. It is desirable that used disposable hygienic articles can be disposed of discretely and hygienically, especially when the user may lack the possibility to discard the used article immediately after the used article has been replaced. The packaging may be usually folded in a two-fold and sealed along the edges to protect the article before use, that is, to keep it hygienic before use. The packaging may also function to protect an adhesive layer which may be necessary to affix the article to a garment. The adhesive layer may be applied on the garment side of the disposable hygienic article.

Even though there are prior art solutions for individual packages for disposable hygienic articles, there is still a need for a packaging that can be used both for packaging a new hygienic article and for hygienic keeping and discarding of the used hygienic article, and that can protect an adhesive layer of the hygiene article while addressing the waste management challenges.

[0007] The individual packages for disposable hygienic articles have conventionally been of materials comprising plastics. There is however a need for plastic-free and sustainable solutions that are still discrete and keep the article hygienic before use, and at reasonable cost. of the invention

[0008] It is an object of the present invention to provide a solution to the abovementioned need. This object, as well as other objects being apparent to a skilled person studying the present description, may be achieved by a packaging unit comprising an absorbent hygienic article, and a sheet of wrapping material comprising natural fibers. The sheet has an inner side and an outer side, two opposing first longitudinal edges and two opposing first transversal edges. The sheet of wrapping material is foldable towards the inner side along two folding lines perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the sheet. The two folding lines define a middle portion of the sheet, a first flap on one end of the middle portion and a second flap on the other end of the middle portion.

[0095] Figure 1 shows a top view of an exemplary packaging unit 1 , according to examples herein. Panel a) of Figure 1 shows the packaging unit 1 in an unfolded configuration. The packaging unit 1 comprises an absorbent hygienic article 2. The packaging unit 1 further comprises a sheet of wrapping material 3 comprising natural fibers. The sheet has an inner side 4 and an outer side 5, two opposing first longitudinal edges 6, 7 and two opposing first transversal edges 8, 9, the sheet of wrapping material 3 being foldable towards the inner side 4 along two folding lines 10 perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the sheet, the two folding lines 10 defining a middle portion 11 of the sheet, a first flap 12 on one end of the middle portion 11 and a second flap 13 on the other end of the middle portion 11. In the folded configuration, shown in panel b) of Figure 1 , the sheet of wrapping material is folded towards the inner side 4 along the two folding lines 10, and the folded sheet of wrapping material has two opposing second longitudinal edges 14, 15 between two opposing second transversal edges 16, 17. The packaging unit 1 also comprises a first layer of sealing material to seal the packaging unit. As depicted in panel a) of Figure 1 , the first layer is applied according to a pattern on one or more first surfaces 18 covering at least a part of the inner side 4 of the sheet of wrapping material 3 along the two opposing first longitudinal edges 6, 7. The one or more first surfaces 18 are arranged so that in the folded configuration, the one or more first surfaces 18 cover a full extent of at least the two opposing second longitudinal edges 14, 15. The packaging unit 1 also comprises a second layer of releasing material to releasably attach the absorbent hygienic article to the sheet of wrapping material. The second layer is arranged onto a second surface 21 of the inner side 4 of the sheet of wrapping material 3. The second surface 21 is smaller than the inner side 4 of the sheet of wrapping material 3, and is arranged in a central portion of the inner side 4 of the sheet of wrapping material 3. A first portion free of the first layer is arranged in a first transversal middle section 31 of the sheet of wrapping material 3 from one first longitudinal edge 6 to the first longitudinal edge on the opposing side 7. A second portion free of the first layer is arranged in a first longitudinal middle section 32 of the sheet of wrapping material 3 from one first transversal edge 8 to the first transversal edge 9 on the opposing side. The sheet of wrapping material 3 comprises the first portion free of the first layer and the second portion free of the first layer. The sheet of wrapping material 3 comprising the first portion free of the first layer and the second portion free of the first layer comprises four third surfaces 30 arranged to be adjacent to the full extent of the two third transversal edges 24, 25, on both sides of the second surface 21 and adjacent to a middle section of the two third longitudinal edges 22, 23 on both sides of the second surface 21 . Claims

CLAIMS1 . A packaging unit comprising: an absorbent hygienic article, a sheet of wrapping material comprising natural fibers, the sheet having an inner side and an outer side, two opposing first longitudinal edges and two opposing first transversal edges, the sheet of wrapping material being foldable towards the inner side along two folding lines perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the sheet, the two folding lines defining a middle portion of the sheet, a first flap on one end of the middle portion and a second flap on the other end of the middle portion, wherein in a folded configuration, the sheet of wrapping material is folded towards the inner side along the two folding lines, and the folded sheet of wrapping material has two opposing second longitudinal edges between two opposing second transversal edges, a first layer of sealing material to seal the packaging unit, the first layer being applied according to a pattern on one or more first surfaces covering at least a part of the inner side of the sheet of wrapping material along the two opposing first longitudinal edges, wherein the pattern is repetitive and uniformly distributed over the one or more first surfaces, the pattern comprising elements of sealing material and uncoated parts, and wherein the one or more first surfaces are arranged so that in the folded configuration, the one or more first surfaces cover a full extent of at least the two opposing second longitudinal edges.

2. The packaging unit according to claim 1 , wherein the elements and uncoated parts are present in the repetitive pattern in a respective first surface, of the one or more first surfaces, on each of the middle portion and at least one of the first flap and the second flap.

3. The packaging unit according to any of claims 1-2, wherein the repetitive pattern is comprised of a plurality of repeated units of sealing material, with uncoated parts between two adjacent repeated units.

4. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 1-3, wherein, in an unfolded configuration, at least a first section along the two opposing first longitudinal edges of the wrap is free of the one or more first surfaces in one or more of: the first flap, the second flap and the middle portion.

5. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein the one or more first surfaces are arranged on the first flap and the middle portion of the sheet, and wherein in the folded configuration, a first set of the one or more first surfaces on the first flap overlaps a second set of the one or more first surfaces on the middle portion.

6. The packaging unit according to claim 5, wherein the pattern is arranged such that in the folded configuration, the first set of the one or more first surfaces on the first flap overlaps the second set of the one or more first surfaces on the middle portion to form a full seal.

7. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 6-7, wherein the pattern is arranged such that in the folded configuration, the elements of sealing material on the first set of the one or more first surfaces on the first flap overlap the uncoated parts of the second set of the one or more first surfaces on the middle portion to form a full seal.

8. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 6-7, wherein the full seal is air-tight.

9. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 1-8, wherein at least one of the one or more first surfaces is arranged such that, in the folded configuration, said at least one of the one or more first surfaces is arranged adjacent to a first folding line of the two folding lines, on the first flap or the middle portion.

10. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 1-9, wherein at least another one of the one or more first surfaces is arranged such that, in the folded configuration, said at least another one of the one or more first surfaces is arranged adjacent a second folding line of the two folding lines, on the first flap or the middle portion.1711. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 1-10, wherein in the folded configuration, the one or more first surfaces of the second flap and the middle portion cover the entire longitudinal edge of the middle portion.

12. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 1-11 , wherein the sealing material is a heat-sealable material.

13. The packaging unit according to claim 12, wherein the seal is achieved by means of a heat weld.

14. The packaging unit of any one of claims 1-13, wherein the elements are one of: discrete and non-discrete.

15. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 1-14, wherein the elements of sealing material cover at least 25% of any of the one or more first surfaces, preferably at least 50 % of any of the one or more first surfaces.

16. The packaging unit of any one of claims 1-15, wherein one or more of: a. the elements comprise one or more edges, and wherein the one or more edges are non-circular, and b. the elements have an elongated shape.

17. The packaging unit of any one of claims 1-16, further comprising: a second layer of releasing material to releasably attach the absorbent hygienic article to the sheet of wrapping material, the second layer being arranged onto a second surface of the inner side of the sheet of wrapping material, wherein the second surface is smaller than the inner side of the sheet of wrapping material, and is arranged in a central portion of the inner side of the sheet of wrapping material.

18. The packaging unit according to claim 17, wherein the releasing material comprises silicone.

19. The packaging unit according to any one of claims 17-18, wherein the absorbent hygienic article has a top side and a bottom side, wherein the bottomside has an adhesive coating to releasably attach the absorbent hygienic article to a garment of a user, and wherein the adhesive coating is arranged to be releasably attached to the releasing material to releasably attach the absorbent hygienic article to the sheet of wrapping material.
