Description

MIXTURES OF POLYETHYLENE GLYCOLS AND POLYBLOCK ALKOXYLATESFIELD

[0001] Embodiments relate to surfactant compositions that include mixtures of polyblock alkoxylates and polyethylene glycols to generate solid formulations for use in a variety of industrial and institutional cleaning applications.BACKGROUND

[0002] Cleaning products typically include one or more surfactants to enhance the cleaning performance of the cleaning product. Solid-block commercial detergents have in-use cost savings as well as reduced transportation costs. Additionally, there are reduced packaging requirements particularly for plastic packaging which is a known source of pollution due to waste mismanagement. Detergent surfactants offer a variety of beneficial cleaning characteristics when used in cleaning products, such as dispersibility in water, degreasing, wetting, and other performance functions. Nonionic surfactants are of particular interest for cleaning formulations due to their lower foaming compared to anionic surfactants and their efficient greasy soil removal. However, typical nonionic surfactants are liquids at room temperature and are not suitable for direct incorporation into solid cleaning formulations. Solid surfactants offer a potential alternative, but current solid nonionic surfactants suffer from poor dissolution and cleaning performance.SUMMARY

[0003] In an aspect, embodiments disclosed herein are directed to surfactant compositions that include one or more polyblock alkoxylates having the general formula:

[0004] wherein R1 is a branched or linear C8 to C18 alkyl, R2 is methyl or ethyl, R3 is hydrogen or an aromatic alkyl group, x is 0 to 6, y is 1 to 20, and z is 1 to 30; and one or more polyethylene glycols having a weight average molecular weight ranging from 3 kDa to 15 kDa; wherein the weight ratio of the one or more polyblock alkoxylates to the one or more polyethylene glycols is between 19: 1 and 99: 1; and wherein the surfactant composition has a melting point above 25 ℃.

[0005] In another aspect, embodiments are directed to methods of combining one or more polyblock alkoxylates with one or more polyethylene glycols to form a mixture, wherein the one or more polyblock alkoxylates are of the general formula:

[0006] wherein R1 is a branched or linear C8 to C18 alkyl, R2 is methyl or ethyl, R3 is hydrogen or an aromatic alkyl group, x is 0 to 6, y is 1 to 20, and z is 1 to 30; and the one or more polyethylene glycols having a weight average molecular weight ranging from 3 kDa to 15 kDa; wherein the weight ratio of the one or more polyblock alkoxylates to the one or more polyethylene glycols is between 19: 1 and 99: 1; and heating the mixture to a temperature sufficient to achieve solidification; and forming the mixture into a solid product.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0007] Embodiments relate to surfactant compositions that include mixtures of polyblock alkoxylates and polyethylene glycols to generate solid formulations for use in a variety of industrial and institutional cleaning applications. Surfactant composition may achieve solidification at low loading levels of polyethylene glycol (e.g., < 5 wt%) while maintaining high dissolution rates and optimal hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) values for cleaning applications.

[0008] As used herein, a “solid formulation” is a formulation that is solid at 25℃ and 1 atm (760 mmHg) .

[0009] Surfactant compositions disclosed herein include one or more polyblock alkoxylates blended with one or more polyethylene glycols at particular ratios that generate a solid. Polyblock alkoxylates in the disclosed compositions include primary alcohol-initiated alkylene oxide copolymers having the general form:

[0010] where R1 is a branched or linear C8 to C18 alkyl, R2 is methyl or ethyl, R3 is hydrogen or an aromatic alkyl group, x is 0 to 6, y is 1 to 20, and z is 1 to 30. In some cases, x is 0, y 1 to 14, and z is 8 to 30. In still other cases, x is 1 to 6, y is 1 to 20, and z is 1 to 30.

[0011] Polyblock alkoxylates may have a hydrophilic-lipophilic (HLB) ranging from 11 to 15.

[0012] Surfactant compositions may include one or polyethylene glycols to increase the solid properties of the surfactant composition. Polyethylene glycols disclosed herein may have the general formula:

[0013] where n ranges from 75 to 275.

[0014] Polyethylene glycols disclosed herein may have a weight average molecular weight ranging from 3 kDa to 15 kDa, 3.5 kDa to 13 kDa, or 3.5 kDa to 12 kDa. In some cases, a blend of different average molecular weight polyethylene glycols, at the same or different weight percent, may be utilized in the surfactant blend.

[0015] Surfactant compositions may include a polyethylene glycol at a percent by weight (wt%) of up to 10 wt%, or up to 7.5 wt%, such as in a range of 0.1 wt%to 7.5 wt%, or 1.0 wt%to 7.5 wt%.

[0016] In some cases, surfactant compositions may be formulated with one or more polyblock alkoxylates and one or more polyethylene glycols. The weight ratio of the total polyblock alkoxylates to the total polyethylene glycols may range between 20: 1 to 99: 1, 19: 1 and 99: 1, or 25: 1 to 99: 1.

[0017] Surfactant compositions disclosed herein may have a melting point above room temperature, making it suitable for storage and use in various cleaning applications. In some cases, surfactant compositions may have a melting point above 25 ℃, such as in a range of 45 ℃ to 65 ℃, 49 ℃ to 60 ℃, or 50 ℃ to 60 ℃.

[0018] Surfactant compositions disclosed herein can be utilized in various forms, including gels, cast solids, spray-dried powders, and pressed solids. They can also be combined with other cleaning agents such as caustics, solvents, chelants, rheology modifiers, and ionic surfactants to enhance their cleaning performance.

[0019] In practice, the compositions are prepared by mixing the polyblock alkoxylates and polyethylene glycols in the specified weight ratio. The mixture is then heated to a temperature sufficient to achieve solidification, (e.g., above 60℃, above 75℃, such as in a range of 60℃ to 150℃) , with stirring to substantial uniformity. The resulting solid product can be formed into various shapes and forms, such as gels, cast solids, spray-dried powders, or pressed solids, depending on the intended application.

[0020] After formation of the surfactant composition, the composition may be further combined with other cleaning agents such as caustics, solvents, chelants, rheology modifiers, fillers, and ionic surfactants and processed into small pieces through spray drying, prilling, extrusion with a pelletizer and / or by other methods. The resulting surfactant blend may be in the form of a powder, flakes, granules, pellets or other form factors.

[0021] The surfactant composition may be included in a formulated cleaning composition. For example, the formulated cleaning composition may include the surfactant composition which is combined, blended or otherwise mixed with other solid and / or liquid additives (e.g., fragrances, dyes, coloring, flow aids, detergents) to create the formulated cleaning composition.

[0022] In use of the formulated cleaning composition, or the surfactant composition on its own, water or other polar solvents may be applied (e.g., by immersion and / or by surface contact) resulting in dissolution of the cleaning product or the surfactant composition which yields the water-soluble polyethylene glycol and alkoxylated alcohol (s) . The alkoxylated alcohols may subsequently act as a detergent and / or wetting agent.

[0023] Surfactant compositions disclosed herein may have improved solidification and higher dissolution rates than untreated nonionic surfactants, and optimal HLB values for cleaning. Surfactant and detergent compositions may be used in industrial and institutional cleaning applications, such as auto-dishwash detergents, laundry detergents, and other cleaning formulations where solid forms are preferred for their cost-effectiveness, reduced transportation costs, and environmental benefits.

[0024] While formulation components and properties have been disclosed individually, it is envisioned that component elements may be included, excluded, or combined in any manner or subcombination utilizing any of the above concentration ranges and nested subranges therein. Further, that the recited formulation properties may be similarly achieved through various combinations of the recited components within the recited ranges.

[0025] EXAMPLES

[0026] The following examples are provided to illustrate the embodiments of the invention, but are not intended to limit the scope thereof. Table 1 provides the materials used in the following examples.

[0027] The following examples illustrate the preparation and properties of the disclosed surfactant compositions. The overall results demonstrate the effectiveness of the inventive examples (IE) compared to the comparative examples (CE) in terms of pour point, melting point, and dissolution time.

[0028] Example 1: Development of the Formulation Data

[0029] The inventive examples (IE) and comparative examples (CE) were prepared by mixing the specified nonionic surfactant and PEG in the indicated weight ratios in Tables 2 to 4. The mixtures were heated to 75℃ for 60 minutes with stirring at 800 rpm to uniformity. The resulting samples were then evaluated for their pour point, melting point, and dissolution time.

[0030] Example 2: Pour Point Data

[0031] The pour point of each composition was measured using a MPP 5Gs pour point instrument with a preheating temperature of 60℃. The upper temperature limit on this instrument is 60℃. The pour point data for the single components (Table 5) , inventive examples (Tables 6 and 7) , and comparative examples (Table 8) are summarized in the tables.

[0032] Example 3: Melting Point Data

[0033] The melting point of each composition was measured on a Mettler-Toledo FP 90, with a ramp rate of 3 ℃ / min. The melting point data for the single components, inventive examples, and comparative examples are summarized in Table 9.

[0034] Example 4: Dissolution Testing

[0035] The dissolution time of each composition was measured by melting the surfactant above its melting temperature, weighing 10g, and allowing it to cool to room temperature in an aluminum pan. 90g of deionized water at room temperature was weighed and stirred at 800 rpm. The surfactant was added to the water, and the time for the surfactant to dissolve was documented. The dissolution time data for the single components, inventive examples (IE) , and comparative examples (CE) are summarized in Table 10.

[0036] Result Summary

[0037] As demonstrated, the inventive samples achieve a surprising elevation in pour point and melting point when combined with polyethylene glycol (PEG) . This elevation is influenced by the location and amount of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) in the surfactant structure, as well as the structure of the initiator alcohol hydrophobe. The inventive compositions include either a PO-EO structure or an EO-PO-EO structure, with the final EO block being between 8 and 25 units.

[0038] The inventive examples demonstrate that the relevant PEG molecular weights include 3350, 8000, and 12000, with the optimal ratios of nonionic surfactant to PEG being between 19: 1 (95: 5) and 99: 1. The inventive compositions show a significant improvement in pour point and melting point compared to the comparative examples.

[0039] The dissolution time data further highlights the advantages of the inventive compositions, providing faster dissolution times compared to the comparative examples. While not limited by a particular theory, this rapid dissolution is attributed to the internal PO block in the surfactant structure, which enhances the dissolution properties of the compositions.

[0040] The unexpected results highlight several critical structural features that may contribute to achieving the desired properties in the surfactant blends. The data suggests that a PO-EO structure, rather than an EO-PO structure, is advantageous, as indicated by the comparison of IE2 and CE9. Similarly, an EO-PO-EO structure appears to be more effective than a PO-EO-PO structure, as demonstrated by the comparisons between IE5-7 and CE10. Additionally, the final EO block may need to be within the range of 8 to 25 units, as shown by the comparisons of IE2 with CE6-8 and IE6 with CE11. The results also indicate that polyblock alkoxylates outperform monoblock EO or PO, as seen in the comparisons of IE2+IE5 with CE2-4 and IE1 with CE5. Furthermore, the presence of a benzyl cap, as shown in IE4, and the preference for the hydrophobe to be primary rather than secondary, as evidenced by CE12, may achieve the desired solidification and dissolution properties. These findings suggest the importance of specific structural configurations in developing effective solid surfactant formulations.

[0041] Overall, the data analysis confirms that the inventive solid detergent compositions offer significant improvements in terms of solidification, dissolution rates, and optimal HLB values for cleaning. These benefits make the compositions highly effective and versatile for use in industrial and institutional cleaning applications.

[0042] While the foregoing is directed to exemplary embodiments, other and further embodiments may be devised without departing from the basic scope thereof, and the scope thereof is determined by the claims that follow.
