Abstract
This invention relates to the method of extraction and isolation of catechins from community-processed gambier using Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) technique. The method includes the steps of preparing a sample of ground dry gambier; extracting the sample with ethyl acetate solvent at a raw material to solvent ratio of 1:3 to 1:8 (w / v) in an Ultrasonic Bath at a temperature of 40-60°C for 30-90 minutes, repeated 1-3 times; filtering to obtain the filtrate; evaporating the filtrate with a rotary evaporator; adding hot water and filtering again; settling the filtrate at a cold temperature for 12-48 hours; filtering the precipitate; and drying and refining the precipitate to obtain a dry extract of gambier catechins. This method produces catechin extract with high yield and purity, shorter processing time, and more efficient solvent and energy consumption compared to conventional extraction methods, making it suitable for application on a small and medium scale business owned by gambir farmers to increase the added value of smallholder gambir products.
